Chapter 171

Hearing this, Jiang Chao became very nervous. “Isn’t that a mentally ill person? He said he had a bug in his head, but he was just putting on a show?”

“Yes. When I first heard he went to the neurosurgery department to ask the doctors to remove the bug from his brain, I also thought it was typical delusional schizophrenia, but in fact, I ignored one of the most critical details.”

“What?”

“Why would he agree to exchange hostages?” Lin Chen asked rhetorically.

Mrs. Jiang seemed to agree with what he said and nodded accordingly.

Lin Chen looked at the other party. “Mrs. Jiang, how did you persuade him to exchange hostages?”

Mrs. Jiang replied, “I said I was the director here and I would be more valuable as a hostage.”

“Is there something wrong with that, honey?”

“This is a conclusion based on statistics. The vast majority of the crimes committed by the mentally ill have no prior plans and little preparation. They usually happen suddenly and are crazy in nature, such as randomly killing people on the street. Of course, there are also a number of mentally ill people who can commit premeditated and planned crimes effectively, but the number is extremely low and generally only happens to paranoid or delusional mental patients. However, often the target of the delusional mental patient is their ‘enemies’.” Lin Chen propped his head to one side, held the paper cup between his fingers, and turned it gently for half a circle. “He showed ‘craziness’ when he raised his knife and slashed wildly, but whether he hid the watermelon knife and entered the hospital to commit murder, or allowed the exchange of hostages, or even asked to take the bug out, they all showed meticulous ‘premeditation’. There’s a certain contradiction between ‘madness’ and ‘premeditation’. He even revealed that the police were the ones he believes implanted the bug, so the target of his revenge should be us, right? Why is he looking for a doctor? What’s more, he went to a doctor specializing in neurosurgery and didn’t ask for treatment. He simply held the doctor at knifepoint, which meant his preparation wasn’t thorough.” Lin Chen showed a cold smile on his lips. “To summarize, I think the assailant who took Director Li hostage was pretending to be mentally ill to commit a crime in order to escape legal sanctions.”

After Jiang Chao listened to him, he didn’t speak for a long time. In the end, Mrs. Jiang patted the back of her husband’s hand. Vice Captain Jiang shivered. “Fortunately, you were there, Consultant Lin!” After he finished speaking, he hurriedly looked to his side. “Honey, have you offended anyone recently?”

Mrs. Jiang was calm. “We’re doctors, so there’s always someone that will be offended.

Jiang Chao opened his mouth as if he didn’t understand, so Mrs. Jiang pinched her husband’s earlobes and said softly, “We see many patients begging us to save them, but we’re not miracle workers. We’ll always offend some patients and their families.”

“But do you know the deceased, honey? Is it a family member of a patient you once treated?”

Mrs. Jiang shook her head. “Even if it is, I can’t remember.”

“Then you have to be careful. Do you want to take a few days off?”

“Are you going to protect me at home if I ask for leave?”

“I will, honey. Trust me!”

Lin Chen listened to their meaningless but happy conversation. The sunlight from the window fell on the couple, who had almost experienced life and death. He finally took a sip of the warm water in the cup he was holding.

“Jiang Chao.” He spoke suddenly.

Jiang Chao was taken aback. “Consultant Lin, yes?”

“Protect Mrs. Jiang well.”

“I know Consultant Lin. You also think that those who want to target my wife won’t give up, right?”

“It’s better to investigate the identity of the deceased first. This will allow us to clarify his motives.” Suddenly, Lin Chen felt a stabbing pain in his head, as if someone had picked up a hammer and smashed it into his temple. After a while, he reluctantly said to Jiang Chao, “Sorry, my condition isn’t very good. I’m afraid I can’t follow this case.”

Jiang Chao said nervously, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’ll send someone to stitch up the wound.”

“No need.”

Lin Chen stood up, supported himself on the wall, and walked out of the office.

Mrs. Jiang grabbed him and said, “You’re injured badly. I’ll sew up your wound immediately. Where are you going?”

Lin Chen turned his head and replied calmly, “I want to go home.”

……

Xing Conglian was sitting in an open-top Jeep when he suddenly looked forward. They were driving on the vast loess at the moment, heading southwest to the rainforest.

There were sporadic huge advertisements standing on the loess. At the top of the huge advertisements was the gray-blue sky. In the distance, there were light gray clouds on the top of the Xazi Mountains, as if a torrential rain was brewing, ready to sweep over the world.

The humid and hot monsoon at the edge of the rainforest hit his face, but the wind couldn’t blow away the irritability in his heart. He felt something bad was happening, but he couldn’t explain why. As if by telepathy, Wang Chao also looked over at him. They looked at each other and instantly understood each other’s concerns.

Wang Chao spoke in a serious tone. “Boss, don’t you feel it too?”

Xing Conglian pressed his hand on his phone, almost impulsively making a call, but he also knew very well that this wasn’t the best choice.

“Wang Chao…” he said lightly. “There’s surveillance at home, so bring up the real-time monitoring.”

Wang Chao was holding his laptop with a sad face and didn’t respond to this request for a while. Soon, the teenager understood what he meant and abruptly slapped his thigh. “Boss, although it’s a bit perverted, that’s a really good idea!”

While speaking, Wang Chao quickly brought up the surveillance video at their residence, Unit 6 on Yanjia Lane. If Lin Chen was present, he would be surprised at the kind of surveillance that had no blind spots.

The rags in the kitchen, the fruit tray in the living room, the fish swimming in the courtyard, and the bedding in the room; everything in the house was intact, but no matter how time kept changing, the scene in the surveillance was completely fixed.

Xing Conglian glanced at Wang Chao. Wang Chao was desperately changing feeds at different angles as his frown became tighter.

At this moment, Kang An also leaned over and asked, “Boss, what are you looking at?”

Xing Conglian got annoyed hearing Kang An. “Get away,” he said to his former subordinate.

However, Kang An seemed to have filtered his words and moved even closer, even blocking his sight. “Hey Captain, is this your house? The flowers on the balcony are almost dying in the sun. How long has no one lived there?”

Wang Chao froze the picture on the coffee table in the living room and then zoomed in. The water glass on the coffee table was still the one that Lin Chen drank before they set off to Yongchuan that night. The table was dusty, and the flowers and plants were withered. It was obvious that Lin Chen had never returned home.

“Damn that Jiang Chao! Did that bastard leave my A’Chen Gege in Yongchuan to investigate the case?!” Wang Chao turned to Xing Conglian and asked.

Although he knew that this was of course the only possibility and that, with Lin Chen’s personality, it was difficult for him to give up clues and continue to track them down, when he thought of Lin Chen’s mental state when he left, Xing Conglian became angry.

Are you kidding me? What Lin Chen needed most was rest and complete psychological treatment. If he continued tracking down Song Shengsheng’s case, Lin Chen would collapse, even if he had an iron will.

“Verify your guess,” he said to Wang Chao.

“Yongchuan Second Bureau, right?” Wang Chao immediately began invading the surveillance system of Yongchuan Second Bureau. They were abroad, so there was no psychological burden, so Wang Chao was even quicker than before. When he pressed enter, the image lit up.

Wang Chao quickly dragged and dropped the timeline, and as expected, Lin Chen’s figure appeared in the big office of Yongchuan Second Bureau. The light outside the window turned from dark to bright and then dark again. Xing Conglian counted the time. Lin Chen hadn’t slept for over 48 hours.

Xing Conglian stared at Lin Chen, seeing him sitting quietly in front of a computer checking information. He would raise his glass of tea from time to time and then put it down. Xing Conglian wished he could put some sleeping pills in the glass so Lin Chen could quickly go to sleep.

“Boss, who are you looking at?” Kang An’s voice sounded again.

Xing Conglian had the urge to kick this guy out of the Jeep. “Get your head away from my sights,” he said aggravatingly.

Kang An hurriedly moved his head away. The moment the annoying head was cleared, Xing Conglian saw Lin Chen get up.

Lin Chen seemed to be checking something. He stood up with a determined expression, holding a water cup, and walked to another office.

Wang Chao immediately switched the monitoring angle. He watched as Lin Chen walked into the Network Surveillance Department and talked to the police inside. The police officer suddenly became energetic and started tapping on the keyboard. After a while, Lin Chen seemed to have thought of something as he shook his head suddenly, causing the porcelain cup to smash into the ground. The video only had images and no sound. Although they didn’t know what happened, he could guess from Lin Chen’s painful expression that their new discovery must be related to Song Shengsheng’s case.

Lin Chen squatted down, trying to pick up the broken porcelain pieces on the ground, but suddenly he gripped one of them tightly in his palm. He watched as the blood dripped from Lin Chen’s hand, watched as Jiang Chao nervously brought the medical kit, and watched as Lin Chen unconsciously poured disinfectant on his hand.

Lin Chen’s face showed a calmer expression after the pain became numb. Xing Conglian calmed down and said to Wang Chao, “Can you find the file records of that computer? What exactly did they find?”

“Give me a minute!” Wang Chao snapped his fingers and quickly opened one of the documents. The results were horrifying. He finally knew the reason for Lin Chen’s gaffe. The murder motives of Xiang Ye and Meijing turned out to be related to MSC Doctors Without Borders and AIH Insurance.

Xing Conglian raised his head. They were sitting in a Jeep at this moment, and they happened to pass by a huge roadside billboard for AIH Insurance.

When he looked back, Lin Chen was no longer in the video.

“Boss, do you want to keep watching?” Wang Chao tentatively asked.

“Continue,” Xing Conglian said.

“But what are we looking at?”

Xing Conglian recalled the last scene. “Did Jiang Chao take him out?”

“Yes.”

“Switch the monitoring to Yongchuan Second People’s Hospital.”

“Eh?”

“Jiang Chao’s wife is a doctor there. He most likely took Lin Chen there to suture his wound.”

Although Wang Chao was doubtful, he still pulled up surveillance of the hospital. The number of people in the emergency hall was large, which made it difficult to distinguish Lin Chen’s figure in the vast sea of people.

“Boss, do you know what department Lieutenant Jiang’s wife belongs to? Will he directly take A’Chen Gege there for treatment?” Wang Chao asked.

“Neurosurgery,” Xing Conglian replied.

Wang Chao nodded, and the screen switched to a shocking scene.

The corridors of the neurosurgery ward were a mess, and there were security guards surrounding the door of an office. The doctors and patients looked panicked, and Lin Chen…

Lin Chen stood in the corner of the corridor. He took a gun handed over by Jiang Chao and loaded it without hesitation. He walked out of the picture and walked into the office, surrounded by security guards.

“Fuck me, why did that idiot Jiang Chao give A’Chen Gege a gun? Can’t he do this himself!” Wang Chao was so enraged that he couldn’t help but raise his voice. “I’ll try to adjust the camera on the opposite floor to see if I can see this office clearly…”

“Negotiation,” Xing Conglian replied.

Before his voice fell, the screen switched. Sure enough, someone in the office was holding a female doctor hostage with a blade in his hand, and Lin Chen was holding a gun as he slowly walked step by step towards the hostage.

Because of the distance, Xing Conglian couldn’t see Lin Chen’s face clearly, but he only felt that his heart was about to stop beating. In the blink of an eye, Lin Chen decisively drew his gun and shot. Blood splattered everywhere. Wang Chao couldn’t help but yell and cover his eyes.

Xing Conglian couldn’t look away. He kept his eyes open and watched as Lin Chen lowered his hand, as if nothing had happened. He turned around and walked out of the office.

The picture cut back to the corridor again. Lin Chen’s expression was numb, like an old man who was dying. There were many people around him. Whether it was the police who came to deal with the incident or the doctors, nurses, and patients in the hospital, it created a noisy scene. At the moment, Xing Conglian clearly felt that Lin Chen couldn’t perceive what was happening around him. His consciousness had been completely separated from his body, as if he were dead.

He just watched Lin Chen pass through the horrified crowd and be taken into an office.

Because of the reflection of the glass in the other office, they couldn’t see what was going on inside.

Time passed minute by minute. Wang Chao wanted to fast forward, but Xing Conglian stopped him.

There was silence all around, as if he were experiencing a long silent movie. The picture was then fast-forwarded. A group of medical staff rushed from the end of the corridor to the office. When the office door opened, Lin Chen was being carried out on a stretcher.

Chapter 91: Aging

The interior of the mine was dry, and there weren’t many weeds growing. The entrance to the mine was relatively spacious. Sunlight would trickle down from above, illuminating the wooden beams embedded in the cave. The gray wooden beams were covered with a layer of brilliant gold, and the lights and shadows mixed perfectly, lined with fine golden dust at the entrance and exit.

Ignoring the fountain of evil qi coming from the depths of the mine, the scenery at the entrance of the cave had a bit of sacredness.

Xiang Jiang, having the feelings of a thousand-year-old monster, didn’t seem to think so. He made a gesture and signaled the group to enter the cave quickly and get to work.

In the mine, there were still aging wires and lighting that hung on the walls of the cave. The wires had long since dried up and were peeling, and their red and blue colors had turned into muddy brown and gray. However, apart from the cave, neither the clean cave wall nor the flat gravel layer under their feet showed the traces of the years.

As long as the old lights on both sides were replaced, Yin Ren believed that someone would be coming down here to work tomorrow.

Qi Xin was wearing a simple, dark gray office suit. She stood at the entrance of the mine, out of place with the surrounding scenery. The woman spoke little, except when necessary. The cold wind blowing out of the cave stirred her hair. Yin Ren couldn’t detect the slightest breath of a cultivator from her. Whether she was partial to a science post or a metaphysical post, it was impossible to judge based on how much she believed.

They had arrived at their destination. Qi Xin watched as everyone in Unit 9 took out a mess of spirit weapons and started busying themselves without asking a word.

She just stood silently, like a robot who had come to show them the way.

Compared with this office worker, Huang Jin seemed even more worried. “Since we know that there are high-risk evil things that will rise, why do we need to collect data? Aren’t the B-level groups available?”

“So we should just let B-level groups handle things when it’s a little dangerous? What do you want to do? Check on trivial things every day in the city? I remember your information. You weren’t such a pain in the ass when you started working.”

As Xiang Jiang spoke, he bent down and inserted two pieces of wood into a hole.

Using a piece of wood as the center, he started nailing the wood chips one by one. The small nubs of the wooden nails were thick and dull in color. They exuded a strong fishy smell, and fine runes could vaguely be seen on them.

Huang Jin looked at the circle of top-notch wooden nails on the ground and didn’t know how to respond—brother, you just inserted a large-scale anti-evil spirit suppression barrier at the entrance of the cave, yet you don’t want us to ask more questions?

The spirit-suppression nail was an excellent spirit weapon for dealing with large evil spirits. The raw materials used came from coffins that were more than hundreds of years old. Occasionally, a few Nightwalkers would stumble upon a nail, which would fetch a price of over six figures for them.

Shian sure did have deep pockets, as just one array required dozens of pieces.

As for the piece of wood in the center of the formation, Huang Jin didn’t recognize it. He could only see that it was an ancient prop, which meant it was probably quite expensive.

The balance of his bank card flashed through his mind, causing Huang Jin’s heart to ache. He decided to think in a different direction, such as concentrating and looking at Xiang Jiang himself.

Unfortunately, Xiang Jiang’s thoughts were hard to read—”hard” in the literal sense.

This person’s mind was like a sea urchin. It had sharp thorns erected in all directions. Xiang Jiang’s mental state didn’t seem very good. The text all over his body seemed to be twisted and deformed as if it were liquidated, making it difficult for Huang Jin to read.

Soon, Xiang Jiang finished nailing all the spirit-suppression nails. There was now a hole with a piece of wood in the center and six circles made of wooden nails around it. They were close to each other, looking a bit like teeth that were ready to choose someone to eat.

The spirit-suppression nails formed an array. The cold pressure overwhelmed the evil qi at the entrance of the cave, which made people feel quite safe. Of course, it would have been better if the six of them weren’t at the entrance of the cave in the first place.

At this point, Huang Jin gave up on the idea of questioning work. He accepted his fate and continued to ask, “What evil things are there? Is there any information?”

“Let’s review the preliminaries.” Seeing that Xiang Jiang was about to stare daggers at him, he quickly amended.

After setting up the spirit-suppression array, Xiang Jiang leaned against the rock wall to rest. The sunlight shot in slanting from the cave, and he happened to be standing in the shadows. The tip of his shoe just stepped on the dividing line between light and shadow.

Perhaps Huang Jin’s search for compensation worked. Xiang Jiang retracted his gaze and looked down at the ground, which was full of gravel and sand. His messy bangs hung down, a little dirty, just enough to cover his eyes.

“I briefly investigated, and at present I can only determine the quantity and danger,” Xiang Jiang said. “Sunken Society is secretly raising evil beings here. This isn’t some kind of zoo. The situation in the mines is complicated. Do you think Shian can just visit by buying a ticket?”

“The type of evil creatures, their abilities, their specific location… None of those have been determined. You need to go step by step and collect clues bit by bit to gradually determine their habits and characteristics.”

Yin Ren didn’t stop his movements while arranging his spirit weapon.

Xiang Jiang was absolutely lying. Even if the specific type of evil things wasn’t determined, Shian at least would know their general abilities and location. Otherwise, if they couldn’t find any evil things and instead found a mass of evil spirits with no combat abilities, it would surely be an embarrassing situation for Shian.

Now that someone had arranged their journey, he just needed to lie down. The task was fully automatically guided. Who wouldn’t like a task where they didn’t need to use their brain at all?

Zhong Chengshuo’s attention was completely captured. He looked at Xiang Jiang without blinking, listened very solemnly, and froze into a humanoid sculpture on the spot.

“It’s actually similar to methods used to investigate new species.”

Seeing that Xiang Jiang hadn’t continued after a long period of time, Lu Xiaohe picked up the conversation.

“You should be studying a new kind of evil spirit—find more clues and judge its habits. The more data we have, the more we will know about it. In this way, even if you encounter it, you’ll be prepared.”

“Then I think it’s better not to meet,” Huang Jin muttered.

Ge Tingting nodded halfway but felt something was wrong and firmly blocked her neck.

Normally, Lu Xiaohe would probably say something like, “Oh, just scoff it off. I’m sure you’ll be fine” to lighten the mood, but this time, she just laughed dryly and continued.

“Don’t be impatient with the data collection. Everyone should be cautious! It’s not easy for a drone to enter the mines. I’ll try my best to provide you with intelligence support. Even when you encounter uncertain clues, you can report them to me at any time.”

“There’s no need to put too much pressure on yourself. Today is just mapping out the layout of the base. Let’s consolidate the road near the exit first. With Ms. Qi here, we don’t need to go deeper for the time being.”

Zhong Chengshuo instantly showed an expression on his face as if he had been splashed by cold rain. Then he reacted slowly, and under the premise of “worrying about his lover”, he breathed a sigh of relief.

Like a person who had never danced in his life and wanted to move his limbs in harmony with the music, as a result, Zhong Chengshuo’s “thinking limbs” almost stumbled and fell to the ground.

Yin Ren almost wickedly laughed out loud, but he managed to hold back.

His lover looked more vivid and clumsier than ever.

In the end, Yin Ren couldn’t hold back the itching in his hands. He pressed his hand on the back of Zhong Chengshuo’s head and rubbed it soothingly.

It was warm, and the black hair was smooth and soft. Zhong Chengshuo’s hair was slightly long and the ends of his hair were softly attached to the back of his neck. They seemed to have devoured the sun and were glowing as dark as a crow’s feather.

Yin Ren subconsciously thought how they would look if they were white, and his original comfortable mood disappeared.

He didn’t know why he thought of this out of nowhere. Was it because there were too many old people here?

Yin Ren rubbed his temples and adjusted his breathing for a while. Well, these things can be pushed off until later. First, it was imperative to get through this level.

……

Around two in the afternoon, the base was set up.

The waterproof blanket and sleeping bags were properly arranged, and a lightweight alloy kettle was placed next to the water condensation spirit weapon. Xiang Jiang had set up a stove on the spot and boiled some water. He poured out six bowls of instant seaweed egg drop soup. The pancakes were greasy after it cooled down. The crispy shell became soggy, and its flakiness was now soft. It wasn’t as amazing as when it was freshly fried, but with the hot soup, it gave it a special taste.

“Why does Gengsheng Town hate outsiders so much?”

Zhong Chengshuo glanced at the pancake in Yin Ren’s hand as he asked Qi Xin.

Qi Xin looked up at him. Her eyes were blank like a piece of paper with no emotional color. “I don’t want to talk about things other than work.”

Yin Ren: “…..”

These two were really like a white knife going in and coming out red*. Their questions and answers were too direct.

*(白刀子进,红刀子出) Idiom referring to killing people to see blood, to fight desperately. || Basically, Yin Ren is saying they have such similar personalities that they are clashing.

“I have an element of curiosity, but this is related to our investigation.” Zhong Chengshuo was unphased. “Raising special creatures also depends on the environment. The more special the creatures are, the more demanding the environment—understanding the characteristics of the environment will allow us to know more about the characteristics of the creature itself.”

No matter how emotionally dull Zhong Chengshuo was, even he could see the abnormality of Gengsheng Town.

The hatred of the locals towards outsiders had reached the point of distortion. To say that this was purely spontaneous behavior, no ghost would believe it.

And his ghost also provided information. There were a hundred times more evil things in this place than in the outside world, so there must be a reason why Sunken Society would choose to keep high-risk evil beings here.

Not far away, Yin Ren went along and struck while the iron was hot. “Qi Jie, something is wrong with this mountain town. That’s why we’re here. There are some things that only local people know, so please tell us more about it.”

Qi Xin sat on the mat in an orderly manner. She took a sip of the soup and thought for a while.

“All right,” she said.

Now, it wasn’t just the few people that were present; even Lu Xiaohe held her breath.

“When I was young, Gengsheng Town didn’t have such an atmosphere.” Qi Xin put down her soup and wiped her mouth with a napkin. “I heard from my mother in those early years, Gengsheng people were actually very hospitable.”

“This was a mountain village at first. Later, the mines were discovered. The village chief at the time had a good head and took the opportunity to develop the town. The next mayor was even more powerful, turning it into a well-known, rich town in one fell swoop. In those decades, everyone’s life seemed to be going up.”

All these things were actually mentioned in the work materials.

More than 20 years ago, this place was affected by a certain natural disaster, and nearly a hundred people died. There was also a problem with the mineral-rich mountains, so the production of rare minerals declined.

Gengsheng Town only had a single industry. With the collapse of the mineral-related industry, most people lost their jobs. The investors shook their heads, collaborators turned around, and the labor force that came here gradually left, leaving only a gorgeous mess. Not to mention outsiders, even the local children showed signs of fleeing.

I saw him set up the magnificent pavilion, seeing him entertain them there.*” The mountain village grew into a mountain town, and the mountain town became a prosperous and famous town.

*This is an excerpt from The Peach Blossom Fan by Kong Shangren. The full quote is [I saw him… seeing him entertain them there and watched the pavilion collapse]. This is an allusion to the vicissitudes of the ever-changing world. With the passage of time, prosperity and wealth, and the emotion and feeling of fame and fortune, are just fleeting.

Then it rapidly “aged”.

The people weren’t ready for it, whether it was waving goodbye to the glory and wealth of the past or sending loved ones away who never wanted to return.

Then, people started to come—only it wasn’t for investment or tourism, but to talk about “the merger of neighboring mountain towns” and “the transformation and reconstruction of the town”.

The town was aging, and they had come to bury it.

“If we don’t mention her background, Ren Jiying is a typical ‘outsider’. In fact, she’s very capable. If she wasn’t stuck here, she could climb much higher.”

Qi Xin commented lightly.

“Ren Jiying originally planned to dismantle the loop line and re-plan to vacate the area—such as creating a more reasonable layout and building a few roads leading to the proverbial towns.”

“But the townspeople didn’t allow her and threatened that she would be courting death if she touched it. The number of elderly people over 70 years old here is several times that of other places. They all would lay on the ground collectively, and there’s nothing the police can do about it when they come.”

Ge Tingting was a little dumbfounded. “I can understand people in Gengsheng Town don’t like outsiders, but the current level of malice…”

“I don’t know any more. I also left halfway for more than ten years before coming back. If you want to know more, you can only ask the local elderly.”

The corner of Qi Xin’s mouth twitched.

Yin Ren knew what she wanted to laugh at—the old people in town couldn’t wait to rush over and try to scam them from a distance of 800 meters, so it was impossible they would tell them what happened back then.

However, he was indeed very interested in the “natural disaster” that caused the town to change more than 20 years ago.

Moreover, there was a sense of familiarity in the town that kept lingering, like a piece of dirt stuck to his phone screen and was always attracting his attention from time to time.

“I’m going to the bathroom.” After Qi Xin finished talking about the town’s history, she stood up and wanted to go deeper into the mine.”

Xiang Jiang: “Go outside.”

“I saw it just now. There’s a single room dug inside. It’s too bright and open outside.” Qi Xin didn’t stop walking.

“Ge Tingting, Yin Ren, Zhong Chengshuo, you three go with her. Huang Jin and I will stay here.” Xiang Jiang didn’t continue to argue with her. “Go quick and come back. Don’t wander around.”

The single room wasn’t far away—no more than a distance of ten steps. It was estimated that the space that was accidentally discovered had been transformed into a restroom or storage room. After they placed lighting in the cave, it was quite conspicuous.

Under the light, the low doorway became deeper. Qi Xin was quite courageous.

Qi Xin was going to the bathroom, followed by a group of people, showing the grandeur of an emperor visiting his harem. In the thick shadows, her shoes still stepped on the ground rhythmically, without any disorder.

She and Ge Tingting entered the private room, while Yin Ren and Zhong Chengshuo stood guard outside the doorway, turning into a toilet door guard.

The harsh reality was telling Yin Ren that the Ghost King couldn’t be the “god” of scammers, but instead the god of doors. He had just taken up his post with honor for three seconds…

The large area of light at the entrance of the cave shrank into a point in an instant.

The originally straight road suddenly turned into sheep intestines, and the walls were wriggling, as if they had just been swallowed by something.

Yin Ren’s face sank.

Qi Xin was still nearby. No matter how outrageous Shian’s execution mission was, it wouldn’t involve innocent people.

…This was definitely not Shian who was attacking them.

Chapter 90: Malice

The mines to the south of Gensheng Town were the first to be closed. They had been abandoned for more than 20 years.

The terrain near the mines was dangerous, and the town government had designated the area as a no-entry zone. Even if Shian had great influence, they still had to follow the process—Qi Xin didn’t immediately take them to the vicinity of the mine but led the five of them towards the center of town.

She was wearing a pair of old-fashioned flat shoes; the soles of which crackled on the stones, and each step was like a second hand ticking.

“Make sure to eat until you’re full and buy something to take with you before you go. There’s nothing around the mines—not even drinking water,” Qi Xin explained.

On the way, everyone in Shian fully felt the “hospitality” of the locals.

It was Tuesday during working hours. The street they were on looked like a walking area of a nursing home. It was full of the elderly, with very few signs of children.

The old people walked slowly with cloudiness in their eyes as they followed the crowd.

The townspeople ignored Qi Xin, who was walking in front of them, and their eyes were fixated on the five people of Shian. If the gaze had an entity, their journey was comparable to the straw bales used in borrowing arrows with straw boats*.

*Idiom referring to being resourceful and relying on other people’s human or financial resources to achieve one’s own goal. It comes from the Battle of Chibi in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. || This sentence is not referring to the meaning of the idiom but to the metaphor in a literal sense. Basically, they are the straw bales used to gather the 100,000 arrows based on how the townspeople are looking at them. You can read the full story behind the idiom in my Kinky Thoughts to understand better. Another way of putting it is, [their gaze was so sharp it was like staring daggers at them that could poke them full of holes.]

Fortunately, Ge Tingting and Huang Jin were protected by Shian’s charms, and their special abilities were suppressed so as not to be disturbed too much.

Even a handsome man like Yin Ren couldn’t resist the unusual hostility of the townspeople. Rather, he and Zhong Chengshuo received much more malice than the other three.

The situation wasn’t normal.

…But so what?

Yin Ren didn’t worry about his reputation in Gengsheng Town. He was busy looking around the streets.

The architecture here retained many of the styles of the last century and felt like it came from the old movies.

The buildings were all low-rise styles, the surface paint was cracked and mottled, and the original bright colors were stained with dirt. The shop signs still used old-fashioned fonts, accompanied by rustic pictures of landscapes, and a few had added unknown celebrities.

Decades ago, these were still at the forefront of the trend. Now, those portraits were all mottled and faded, covered in dust, with more or less deformed evil things stuck to their edges.

In the midst of this half-dead mass of buildings, the subway loop circled around.

It divided the town into two equal circles, inside and outside, equally passing through the lifeblood of this mountain town. The fog hadn’t dissipated yet, and the shadow of the train shuttled through it, like a giant snake, bringing with it the approaching and fading rumbling sound of its operation.

It was simply the most dynamic thing in Gengsheng Town. The train broke through the mist, creating a solemn and spectacular scene with a touch of vintage style.

Yin Ren admired it attentively as he passed by an old man with a dry face.

The old man was hunched over, walking on the side of the road, and was half a step away from Yin Ren. He was slowly approaching them, but his eyes only stared at the ground.

However, at the moment when he was closest to Yin Ren, the old man suddenly let out a cry and fell straight forward on his face… Well, halfway.

Lord Ghost King backed up several steps with concern, almost creating the border between two opposing powers. “Elder, are you alright?”

His technique supported the old man’s legs, putting him in a classic 45-degree leaning posture. Bewilderment was coming through every wrinkle of the old man’s face.

“I’m fine.” The old man’s expression was uncertain as his body slowly fell to the ground vertically.

Yin Ren breathed a sigh of relief and turned his head to his companions. “This town is too strange. Everyone, be careful.”

The other four Shian employees: “……”

It was clear they were just walking on a regular street in broad daylight, but the road was as if they were wandering the underworld with a lane welcome.

Children fell down in front of them, crying loudly; several vicious dogs broke from their chains and ran towards everyone as their saliva slobbered everywhere… Ge Tingting had just taken two steps when a flower pot fell from the sky, whistling right next to her back as it crashed into the ground. She was in complete shock as she was almost scratched by the fragments of the flowerpot.

The situation was incredibly bizarre, but Xiang Jiang, their team leader, didn’t seem bothered, and even Qi Xin didn’t have any semblance of shock, as if this was all commonplace.

……

“Just eat here.”

After walking for about 30 minutes, the sound of footsteps as accurate as a second hand stopped and Qi Xin finally spoke.

Her voice was hoarse and wasn’t very pleasant, but to everyone in Shian, her voice was like heavenly music to their ears—ghosts were scaring them at night while people were scaring them in the daytime. This hellhole of a place really made people not want to stay for a single second longer.

Their destination was a bakery.

The shop itself wasn’t large, and the signboard was so smoky that the characters couldn’t be seen clearly. It seemed like it hadn’t been cleaned for at least a decade, but at least the shop was clean. There were no stains on the tables or chairs. The sound of boiling oil was heard from the back kitchen, and there were pancakes neatly packed on display. Their skin was slightly golden, with an appealing oily fragrance.

Next to the stainless-steel plate containing the pancakes were two deformed, hungry ghosts lying on their stomachs. They swung their skeleton-like bodies, passing their hands through the pancakes again and again. The hungry ghosts’ protruding bellies rubbed against the white porcelain tiles, making a creaking sound.

It seemed that the pancakes here were really good, Yin Ren commented impartially in his heart.

Qin Xin: “Ten beef pancakes, served with clear soup, eaten now. Twenty pork pancakes to go, which we’ll choose ourselves.”

The shopkeepers were a father and daughter. Compared to the expressionless old father, the daughter still had a better look for them.

Before the daughter could speak, the old man spat on the ground in front of everyone. “You’re only going to pick and choose things that are cheap. I’m not selling!”

“We’re picking it ourselves,” Qi Xin repeated indifferently.

“Not selling! I don’t know where these wild animals came from, yet I have to serve them?”

“Stop it dad…” The daughter tugged at the corner of her mouth. “It’s fine. Just pick.”

Qi Xin glanced at the old man. “They’re guests of Mayor Ren.”

Hearing this, a sneer came from the corner of the shop. “Guest? Is Ren Jiying the only one we have to give face to? If it weren’t for the consideration of her parents, she would’ve been killed a long time ago.”

“Bringing dubious people in from outside. I don’t know what she’s thinking…”

“Every day they’re up to something. Even that surnamed Ren wants to move the loop…”

The sneer was like a stone splashing into the water, causing countless ripples.

The old people in the shop began to chatter in low voices. The dialect was soft, whispering like drizzle, but they were full of hostility, making the drizzle feel like steel needles.

“I heard from my daughter that these people are going to the mines.”

“Mines? Are they going there to feed themselves to ghosts?”

“Did Ren Jiying finally come to her senses?”

The townspeople didn’t shy away from their talks despite Unit 9’s presence, thinking they wouldn’t understand what they were saying. Everyone’s views were surprisingly consistent, and there was no trace of debate at all.

The ease on Yin Ren’s face gradually disappeared.

In the buzzing whispers, an inexplicable sense of familiarity grabbed him. The colors in front of him were blurred, and the sound in his ears suddenly disappeared. In a trance, he seemed to smell the scent of corpses and black smoke from thousands of years ago.

The sense of familiarity didn’t come from immediate malice but from something deeper, more essential.

It floated in the air, attached itself to evil things everywhere, and flowed in the eyes and words of the townspeople… If he had to put it into words, it was like the breath of “this mountain town”.

Suddenly, a bamboo basket containing pancakes was put on the table.

The beef pancakes exuded a rich aroma. Yin Ren shook his head, and his attention fell back to the ground from the sky. He seemed to have noticed another serious problem…

“There’s only nine pancakes,” beside Yin Ren, Zhong Chengshuo stated matter-of-factly.

“My dad dropped one when he was packing them,” the daughter explained. “Our beef pancakes are all sold out, so he’s cooking more now.”

Qi Xin seemed to want to say something, but in the end, she lowered her eyes and remained silent.

Soon, the old man holding a freshly fried pancake with steel tongs walked over. He threw the pancake into the basket without any care, almost splashing hot oil onto Zhong Chengshuo’s face.

Since the freshly fried pancake was placed in front of Zhong Chengshuo, he naturally went for it. However, as his chopsticks reached halfway, they were suddenly pressed down by Yin Ren’s chopsticks.

“Give me this,” Yin Ren said with a smile.

Without any explanation, he took away the steaming, fresh pancake.

In the eyes of Lord Ghost King, this pancake was far less attractive than its appearance. The pancake was covered with the smell of malice, which almost overpowered its aroma.

Yin Ren took a bite of the cake. In the corner of his eyes, the old shopkeeper grinned, not concealing the anticipation on his face.

Crack.

The beef pancake was fragrant and crispy, but after a few bites, Yin Ren chewed on something hard and foreign. The foreign object was thin and smooth and exuded a metallic taste.

It was a sewing needle, and there was more than just one.

…As expected, the town’s xenophobia had reached the point of “mental abnormality”.

Yin Ren sighed. He chewed up the few needles and swallowed them with the pancake.

He ate quickly, keeping his eyes on the old shopkeeper as he chewed.

The smile on the latter’s face gradually disappeared. He stared at Yin Ren as if he had seen a ghost, then ran back to the kitchen after a long while to break apart the uncooked pancakes one by one.

Zhong Chengshuo reacted instantly. He immediately turned to Yin Ren and showed a jerky worriedness between his brows. Yin Ren quietly stretched out a strand of hair and wrapped it around Zhong Chengshuo’s ankle soothingly.

Until they left, the old shopkeeper was still breaking apart his pancakes to check.

……

At three in the afternoon, they came to the foot of the mines with bags full of oily pancakes.

More than 20 years later, the mountain was still bare, mottled like a burned scalp. Compared with the “human eating mine” they had imagined before, the small entrance seemed ordinary.

The target mine was embedded in the rocks, and most of the fixed wooden strips at the entrance were decayed. The entrance of the mine was covered with a rough wooden door that wasn’t locked, and there was only a circle of faded red cloth that was pulled around on the outside.

There was an extremely intense evil qi that overflowed the mouth of the cave, as ominous as the breath of wild beasts. Those red cloth strips remained still and looked more like a ritualistic prop than a cordon line.

Xiang Jiang stopped outside the red cloth circle. His cloudy eyes looked at the gap in the wooden board, and his gaze penetrated into the depths of the mine.

“Ms. Qi, wait here. We’ll clean up a little inside and then come out.”

He played with a spirit weapon made of wood chips in his hand and spoke to the tips of his shoes.

“There is a high risk that evil things will rise when it sinks. While I hold it steady, you try to collect as much data as possible, and Shian will study it later.”

Yin Ren and Zhong Chengshuo looked at each other.

Their execution mission had finally started.

Kinky Thoughts:

The story about borrowing arrows from straw boats comes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Zhou Yu was jealous of Zhuge Liang. During a discussion of military affairs, he asked Zhuge Liang to make 100,000 arrows in order to fight against Cao Cao’s army that was approaching. Zhuge Liang replied that rather than 10 days, he could make it in 3 days and promise he could come up with them within the time limit or he will face punishment. Hearing this, Zhou Yu was very happy, knowing Zhuge Liang wouldn’t be able to do such a feat.

Unconvinced, Lu Su asked Zhou Yu if Zhuge Liang was serious, to which Zhou Yu said that it was Zhuge Liang himself who said it of his own volition. He then asked Lu Su to investigate Zhuge Liang to see what he was planning and to report back.

When Lu Su met with Zhuge Liang, Zhuge Liang asked him for his help. Lu Su was confused as to what he could do in order to help Zhuge Liang produce 100,000 arrows. Zhuge Liang asked Lu Su to lend him 20 boats, and each boat needed more than 30 soldiers. Cover the boats with green cloth curtains, and arrange straw bales on both sides of the boats. Then he would have his own means to handle the rest, but Lu Su must not let Zhou Yu know about his plan.

Lu Su agreed. He didn’t know what purpose Zhuge Liang had for borrowing these boats, but when he came back to report to Zhou Yu, he didn’t mention it and only said that Zhuge Liang wasn’t using bamboo, feathers, or glue. Zhou Yu became puzzled and said he’ll wait until the third day and see what Zhuge Liang can do.

Lu Su then privately dispatched 20 boats filled with 30 soldiers each, according to Zhuge Liang’s instructions. On the first two days, there were no movements, but on the third, Zhuge Liang invited Lu Su with him to go procure the arrows together. Here was where he witnessed Zhuge Liang’s means.

Zhuge Liang connected the 20 boats together by rope and set off to the north banks. At this time, the sky was foggy and vision of the river was clouded. As the boats approached Cao Cao’s army, Zhuge Liang ordered them to spread out and have the soldiers beat war drums and shout at the same time. Lu Su was surprised by this as it would attract Cao Cao’s soldiers, to which Zhuge Liang replied that Cao Cao wouldn’t send his troops into the thick fog.

As predicted, when Cao Cao learned of the movements in the river, he was overly cautious, afraid that his troops would be ambushed in the thick fog. Rather than having his troops move in, he ordered his crossbowmen to shoot into the river. He sent people to Hanzhai to transfer 6,000 crossbowmen to the riverside to support the navy. More than 10,000 crossbowmen started shooting into the river, and the arrows seemed like rain. As they hit the boats set up by Zhuge Liang, the arrows got lodged in the straw bales.

When the fog cleared, Zhuge Liang ordered for them to return and have the soldiers shout back, “Thank you Minister Cao for the arrows” in unison. Cao Cao knew he had been tricked by Zhuge Liang’s boats, which were too fast and had already sailed away.

When the boats docked, Zhou Yu sent 500 soldiers to dislodge all the arrows. Each boat had more than 500 arrows lodged in it, and with 20, the 100,000 arrows were easily made. When Lu Su met with Zhou Yu and told him how Zhuge Liang managed to procure these arrows, Zhou Yu was taken aback and sighed, “Zhuge Liang is so clever. I really can’t compare to him!”

So when the author was using the metaphor, she’s referring to the straw bales used to gather the arrows of Cao Cao, not actually referring to the meaning metaphor, but rather referencing the metaphor itself.

Chapter 170

Hearing this, Jiang Chao pulled him aside. “Bug, Consultant Lin?” Jiang Chao paused, then asked nervously, “This isn’t Xiang Ye’s and Meijing’s group messing around again, is it?”

Lin Chen shook his head. “It doesn’t look like that. Listening to the expressions in their words, it seems to be a typical type I schizophrenia* symptoms. The symptoms are primarily hallucinations and delusions. If he’s not a patient at Yongchuan’s Second People Hospital, then check the recent medical records of Yongchuan Guangwen Hospital.” After he said this, Lin Chen found that there was no response around him. He turned his head only to realize that Wang Chao wasn’t by his side at this time and that no one would give him an immediate answer. He wanted an answer, but conventional investigation methods still required a lot of time, and he was afraid Jiang Chao’s wife wouldn’t have that much time.

*Schizophrenia is categorized by various types. Type I schizophrenia is characterized by delusions, hallucinations, and formal thought disorder, with a presumed underlying dopaminergic dysfunction.

“Is he mentally ill?” When Jiang Chao heard this, he became even more nervous. “Then wouldn’t my wife be in more danger? Do you want to enter the negotiation right away? But talking to a mentally ill person may not be all that useful!” As Jiang Chao was speaking, he thought of something, took out his Bluetooth headset from his pocket, and handed it over. “The special police should arrive within 10 minutes. Wear this headset so we can communicate.”

Looking at the oval Bluetooth headset handed over by Jiang Chao, Lin Chen refused. “The hostage-taker suspects that he has a bug in his head, so he’ll be afraid of something that looks similar.” After he said this, Lin Chen took out his phone and called Jiang Chao’s number. Jiang Chao pressed the answer button subconsciously. “We’ll use our phones. You can hear the conversation between me and the hostage-taker.”

“But Consultant Lin, how should we coordinate our actions?”

“Two plans. First, wait for the special forces to get the micro-headsets. Second, I’ll go in first.” Lin Chen glanced out the window. The building opposite the hospital was covered with a navy-blue glass curtain wall. “At that time, the sniper positions of the special forces should be placed on the upper floor of that building. The telephone communication may have poor sound quality, but you should be able to see me from there.”

“But you don’t have binoculars. You won’t be able to see us!”

“I don’t need to see you.” While speaking, Lin Chen walked towards the office entrance and made a secret gesture to Jiang Chao in the corridor. “When you see this gesture, kill the suspect immediately. Do not hesitate.”

Jiang Chao was taken back. “Please handle with caution. It’s my wife inside. The last time our bureau dealt with a hostage-taking crisis, a police officer shot and killed the hostage taker but was questioned for his action by the media. In the end, the officer was reprimanded.”

Lin Chen knew Jiang Chao was reminding him for his own good, so he replied seriously, “If you choose to appoint me as an expert in negotiation, then please trust my judgment in this matter on whether to kill the hostage taker or not.”

Jiang Chao nodded and stopped talking.

“Please give me a gun,” Lin Chen said. “Just in case.”

Jiang Chao was stunned again.

Suddenly, the hostage-taker roared in the office. “What are you holding in your hand? Put it down! Put it down!”

“Hurry up!” Lin Chen urged.

Jiang Chao immediately took out his gun and handed it over.

Lin Chen patted Jiang Chao on the shoulder and loaded the pistol. “Please rest assured. I am a professional, and I will rescue your wife.”

Jiang Chao was still as nervous as before, but when he heard this, his eyes suddenly flushed, and he nodded vigorously.

Lin Chen turned and walked to the neurosurgery office, surrounded by a circle of security guards at the front of the entrance.

After he approached, he discovered that it was the walkie-talkie in the hand of the security captain that stimulated the hostage-taker. The walkie-talkie would make noises from time to time, which frightened him.

He patted the security captain on the shoulder, showed his ID, and said, “I am Lin Chen, a psychology consultant for the police. I will be in charge of this negotiation. Take your people and withdraw immediately.”

His voice wasn’t loud enough for the encircled security guards to hear clearly. At this moment, the hostage-taker by the window also realized he was there.

“Who are you? Go away! Go away! All of you, go away!” the hostage-taker shouted.

The security guards withdrew one after another. Lin Chen took a step forward and finally saw the appearance of the kidnapper clearly.

What was different from his imagination was that it looked like a social elite around 40 years old. He was still wearing his business suit and an ash-colored plaid tie. His hair was combed back and held with gel, revealing his forehead. Although his clothes were messy, his entire body looked shiny and smooth. The only thing that didn’t match his entire outfit was the long-handled watermelon knife in his hand. The blade was stuck to the neck of a white-robed female doctor. That should be Mrs. Jiang.

Lin Chen nodded at the other party. Although the tables and chairs in the office were overturned and looked chaotic, Mrs. Jiang didn’t seem panicked. She had her hands in her pockets and looked extremely calm.

“Negotiator?” she asked.

“I’m Lin Chen,” he replied.

Lin Chen saw Mrs. Jiang’s eyes light up. She wanted to say something else, but at this moment, the hostage-taker became manic again when he heard them speaking. He used the watermelon knife and pressed it against Mrs. Jiang’s neck and angrily said, “Who let you talk?! Who?!”

Lin Chen looked at the watermelon knife, then scanned the office again, but he didn’t find anything like a briefcase. The hospital security guards were neither blind nor stupid. It was impossible to miss a mentally ill person wielding a watermelon knife without stopping him. This showed that the “elite” in front of him used some special method to bring in the knife.

Lin Chen frowned. The other party showed obvious criminal intent, organizational behavior, and even certain concealment, which was somewhat inconsistent with the symptoms of patients with schizophrenia.

Only then did he realize that the current situation in the office could have some problems compared with his previous speculation.

He looked at the clock. Two minutes had passed.

“Sorry, I was just confirming the safety of the hostage,” he said to the hostage-taker. “I am the police negotiator in charge of this negotiation. My name is Lin Chen. You can tell me anything you want. I will try my best to meet your requirements.”

“Negotiator? You’re not here to negotiate with me. I don’t want to talk to you. It’s you police who put it in my head. I know you’re here to kill me!” The hostage-taker stuck the blade together to Mrs. Jiang’s neck. “Back, back, back to the door.”

Lin Chen was unmoved. His tone changed as he said sternly, following the words of the hostage-taker, “Since you’re clear that we police installed a bug, then you should know that only we can take it out. If I leave now, you won’t be able to take that thing out for the rest of your life.”

“You’re threatening me. Believe it or not, I’ll kill someone and then commit suicide. I’ll commit suicide!”

“I advise you to cooperate with the police.” While Lin Chen was talking, he took two more steps forward. The hostage-taker backed away again and was forced to take a position close to the window. “We all know what you’re thinking. You can’t escape.”

“Don’t come closer!” The hostage-taker exerted force on his hand, causing Mrs. Jiang to groan in pain. Traces of blood finally appeared on her neck.

Although her life was threatened, Mrs. Jiang was still calm and composed. Lin Chen could clearly see that at the moment when a trace of blood appeared on her neck, Mrs. Jiang narrowed her eyes and shook her head slightly at him.

Of course, the chief doctor of the neurosurgery department also had the ability to judge and identify schizophrenia. Lin Chen thought that Mrs. Jiang had already noticed something.

He looked at the time again. It would take five or six minutes for the special forces to arrive at the fastest. He was afraid it would be too late.

Upon seeing this, he pretended to be successfully intimidated. He backed away again and said to the hostage-taker, “Since I can’t come closer, can I back up?”

The hostage-taker breathed a sigh of relief, then quietly looked out the window.

Lin Chen said, “You’re really the smartest subject I have ever seen. When did you find out that we installed a bug in your head?”

“Half a month ago. I heard your secret call. You said that you want to control me and steal our company’s secrets!” While speaking, the hostage-taker began to beat his head violently with his hands.

“But…” Lin Chen smiled slightly. “We installed a bug in your head, not a microphone. How can you hear us?”

Hearing this, the hostage-taker was obviously stunned. His eyes rolled slightly, then he suddenly raised his voice and said nervously, “Radio waves. I can receive your radio waves!”

“Your ability is really beyond my imagination,” Lin Chen mocked.

At this moment, he saw the window on the opposite side finally open. Jiang Chao had poked his head out. Even though he couldn’t see Jiang Chao’s expression, he was pretty sure that if he were wearing a Bluetooth headset at this moment, Jiang Chao would probably be desperately telling him not to irritate the hostage-taker.

Lin Chen withdrew his gaze, spread his hands, and comforted him. “But, if we want to take away the bug, we have to operate on you, and the neurosurgeon you’re holding hostage is the best neurosurgeon in this hospital. How about you let Director Li go and we take you for surgery?”

“No, no, no!” The hostage-taker moved another step back and finally sat on the window. “Don’t lie to me. You can take it out as you put it in. If I let this woman operate on me, how will I know you’ll really take it out or you might just kill me on the operating table!”

“That makes sense.” Lin Chen nodded. He put his hand in his pocket and took a few steps forward. “Okay, then I’ll help you take the thing out now, okay?”

Before the hostage-taker could speak again, Lin Chen quickly took out the gun from his pocket.

The moment the hostage-taker saw the gun, there was an obvious moment of shock.

“We usually inject it with a hand-held gun. If you shoot yourself in the head, the bug will be destroyed, and you’ll no longer be under our control.”

He held the handle of the gun, pointed the muzzle towards the hostage-taker’s position, and looked at him.

There was a moment of hesitation in the eyes of the elite.

Lin Chen was getting closer to the hostage-taker. He made a gesture to hand over the gun, and the hostage-taker also stretched out his hand suspiciously.

However, at the moment the other party’s hand was about to touch the gun, he clearly saw an extremely fierce look in the eyes of the hostage-taker, and the silver blade swung in an instant. Lin Chen grabbed the other party violently and pulled the trigger decisively, shooting the elite in the temple.

……

Within about three minutes after he shot, he felt that the person who died was him. His thinking and consciousness seemed to be detached from his body and dissolved into the surrounding environment.

Lin Chen didn’t know whether he was standing, sitting, or kneeling, or whether the color of his sight was blood red or dark black. It took a long time for screaming, vomiting, and whispering to return, but those sounds were very indistinct to him. The gunfire caused severe tinnitus. His eardrums were ringing, and he was in a state of confusion.

But when he could feel pain, it meant that he was alive.

Lin Chen shook his hands gently, and then realized that his resilience was stronger than he thought. He began to be able to see the bloody wound in his palm that was shaken by the recoil of the gun. It had opened up and was bloody and disgusting.

He looked around. Surrounded by snow-white walls that had posters of things like human anatomy diagrams and operation instructions pasted on them, he realized that he seemed to be sitting in some kind of office.

The sound of running water from a water dispenser bucket sounded. Lin Chen looked around and found a lady pouring water. After he looked carefully, he found that it was the hostage that he had rescued just now.

“Consultant Lin, drink some water first.”

Mrs. Jiang put one hand in her pocket and walked towards him, holding a paper cup.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

The beautiful and strong lady nodded. “Thank you for saving me, but I feel that your problem seems to be more serious than mine.”

Lin Chen took the water cup. The smell of blood coming from him made it impossible for him to swallow anything. “Sorry.”

So he held the water but didn’t drink it. The temperature from his palm made him recover gradually, and he found himself covered with a thin blanket at some point.

At this moment, the door to the office was pushed open. Before he could see the figure clearly, Jiang Chao’s voice came ringing in his ears. “Consultant Lin, that was too dangerous just now. Thank God for your quick action!”

Although he usually felt that Jiang Chao occasionally talked too much, such a familiar voice now sounded extremely warm.

“Mm,” he said lightly.

“I thought you would have a good negotiation with him, but I didn’t expect you to provoke him again and again. This is a bit different from your style.”

“Because I made a mistake in my judgment at the beginning. I’m afraid the hostage-taker target has always been your wife. He just wanted to use schizophrenia to escape legal punishment after murdering your wife.”

Chapter 169

All issues pointed directly to AIH, but it still took a lot of time to investigate the true motivations of Xiang Ye and Meijing, which was something they couldn’t rush.

Besides, until now, all they could do was inform AIH to pay attention to financial risk and dissuade Song Shengsheng fans from attending large-scale gatherings. In addition, Lin Chen couldn’t think of what else they could do in this short time.

After the inquiry work was over, Jiang Chao forcibly drove him to the Second People’s Hospital next to Yongchuan’s Second Bureau. According to Vice Captain Jiang, his beautiful wife worked in the neurosurgery department. Naturally, a wound suture like his wouldn’t need the deputy chief physician of neurosurgery to address it, so Lin Chen went to the urgent care department by himself.

The one who stitched up his wound was a young doctor. As soon as Jiang Chao sent him to the treatment room, he slipped away under the pretext of buying water.

Lin Chen suspected he was just taking this opportunity to greet the leader of his family, but a good relationship between husband and wife was still enviable.

He sighed softly and suddenly heard the doctor ask, “How did you get hurt?”

Lin Chen was distracted and was just about to speak when the doctor poured hydrogen peroxide to wash his wound. This was probably the standard procedure for the hospital, but the disinfectant was so painful that he couldn’t even scream.

“Cut myself on porcelain pieces,” he reluctantly replied.

“Ah, it’s pretty bad,” the doctor said as she began to use a soft brush to clean up the debris that might still be stuck in his wound.

It still hurt. Compared to this doctor’s skills to Xing Conglian’s, Xing Conglian’s could be considered gentle.

Thinking of this, he subconsciously looked at the two scars on his arm. The knife wounds had healed, and new flesh had grown out. Some of the red scab hadn’t yet fallen off, and it was mixed with the white of his skin, looking a bit off putting.

Most likely, it was because he was looking at the knife wound on his arm that the doctor also looked over. The doctor then raised her voice as she asked, “What do you do?”

Lin Chen thought for a while and answered truthfully. “I do consulting work for the police.”

The doctor breathed a sigh of relief and said, “No wonder. I thought you looked too gentle, and this didn’t seem like it was due to a fight.” She paused, picked up the needle and thread with tweezers, and prepared to sew his wound. “Police work is very dangerous.”

Lin Chen nodded and said nothing more.

At this moment, there was a sudden noise outside the room. The door wasn’t closed, so the sound floated in from the corridor. A team of security guards were running through the halls, causing all the surrounding patients to stare.

Lin Chen frowned. At the same time, his phone suddenly rang.

The ominous premonition in his heart became stronger. The doctor was busy stitching up his wound, so he glanced at the other party and picked up the phone with his other hand.

Jiang Chao’s anxious voice came from the other end. “Consultant Lin, Consultant Lin!” There was an easily detectable tremor in his voice.

“I’m here. What’s wrong?”

“My wife is being held hostage with a knife on the fifth floor in the neurosurgery department. Can you be a negotiator?”

The clinic room was too quiet, so Jiang Chao’s words were easily heard by the doctor. “What… How could this happen?!” the doctor said anxiously.

“I’ll be there soon.” After Lin Chen finished speaking, he hung up the phone. “Cut the thread,” he said to the young doctor.

……

10,000 kilometers away in the Republic of Angodo, which was adjacent to the Dana Rainforest, Xing Conglian was looking at the Xazi Mountains to the southwest. Thick, dark clouds covered the mountain tops, and the entire Dana Valley seemed to be shrouded in a humid shadow of death.

Of course, the so-called shadow of death was just his inner thoughts. After all, since he was sitting in a small bar hundreds of kilometers outside the rainforest and witnessing mercenaries with live ammunition wandering around outside, it would bring him an inexplicable sense of displeasure. He had been away from such a life of gunfire and explosions for too long, and now he had just returned to his old job, so it was inevitable that he would need time to adapt.

The lights in the bar were dim. Unlike the luxurious bars in developed countries, Dana’s bars only needed to provide three things: alcohol, sex, and, of course, drugs. These three things were also the most common payment methods here, besides gold. Piles of beer were stacked behind the bar, and the wooden shelves were filled with spirits in simple packaging. A kerosene lamp was the only light source in this bar. The decorations in the bar were all ivory, and the precious ivory was crudely carved. Seeing the precious ivory being roughly carved and hung on the wall so casually, Xing Conglian only felt pain.

Across from him sat the owner of the bar named Garstini. Garstini meant python in Dana, which wasn’t a good word. Usually, bars were always equipped with beautiful and flirtatious proprietresses and tough thugs, but the rules in Dana were different. The owner of the bar was a mighty and majestic Gaomeng man with a shaved head and mustache, which didn’t match his body shape, while his bodyguard was a thin girl who wasn’t any taller than 1.6 meters. Xing Conglian’s gaze swept over the muscle lines of the female bodyguard as well as the guns fixed with black belts to her arms, waist, and thighs. It was clear that a woman who could survive in Dana must be extraordinary.

Behind him, Kang An put down his backpack, took out three gold bars from it carelessly, and patted them on the table.

Gold touched people’s hearts, and it didn’t need any verbal guidance. The bright color emitted by the gold alone made the idle mercenaries outside the window look over subconsciously. The soldiers showed a malicious, bloodthirsty gaze, but when they saw the Gaomeng man sitting across from them, they quickly narrowed their gaze, changed from a jackal to a wilting mole, and left bitterly.

The bar owner also retracted his gaze from out the window. The interesting actions of the mercenaries obviously satisfied his vanity. He glanced at the gold on the table again; his eyes revealing clear satisfaction, but he said, “Boss Xing, usually this amount is enough, but now, it’s not.”

Xing Conglian had fought many times with the most cunning people from the Gaomeng tribe in Dana for a long time, so he didn’t say a word but looked back at Kang An. In the short time he stood up, Mr. Kang had already stuffed the gold bars back into his backpack.

The next moment, the boss’ female bodyguard drew her gun and pointed the muzzle at Xing Conglian’s chest. Xing Conglian lowered his head slightly and glanced at the slender woman in front of him, avoided the muzzle indifferently, and continued to walk out.

“Stop!” he heard the female bodyguard shout in the Gaomeng language.

Before her voice fell, Kang An had already grabbed the bodyguard’s gun with lightning speed and pulled the trigger.

The bullet passed through the woman’s ear and shot out the window. The floor-to-ceiling window of the bar cracked in response, and the glass shattered. The bar owner hugged his head in despair, but his bare head was still pierced by some of the glass fragments.

Xing Conglian couldn’t help but glare at Kang An and scold, “Why are you so violent?”

“Boss, I… This is not… I… got angry when I saw her pointing the gun at you!” Mr. Kang shouted righteously.

Xing Conglian didn’t say anything else to Kang An. He pointed to the stool at the other table and motioned for Kang An to bring him another one.

He sat down opposite the bar owner again. Although the situation had reversed, the bald Gaomeng man still raised his head. “Boss Xing, I’m afraid it’s not good for you to be so violent at my place, right?”

“I can do as I want. There’s nothing wrong with it.” Xing Conglian glanced at the wound on the top of the other man’s head as he spoke casually.

“Even if you kill me, I can still guarantee that neither you nor your subordinates will be able to get out of this area safely.”

“I’m here to buy things, not kill people. Are you Gaomeng people so delusional?”

Hearing what he said, the owner seemed to have misunderstood. He slammed the table heavily and said arrogantly, “You don’t have the attitude of buying things. Double the price or there will be no discussion!”

Doing business in this kind of three-way zone was so troublesome.

Businessmen had no integrity, and they would never negotiate if they could grasp it clearly.

Xing Conglian leaned back in his chair and glanced at the young man who had been hiding in the corner.

Wang Chao swallowed and emerged from the shadows timidly. “Boss, can you not speak with such harsh words?”

Xing Conglian knocked on the armrest impatiently, causing Wang Chao to bow his head to the bar owner and look like a meat mountain. He spoke in fluent Gaomengnese. “Hello, Mr. Moda Nar. I am the chief secretary, attendant, and sidekick of Boss Xing. I’m ordered by my boss to inform you that your eldest son, who’s studying finance in Italy, and your younger son, who’s in his sophomore year of high school, are under our control. We know that you have lost your fertility due to an infectious disease, so the two of them are your only offspring. If my great boss and his two subordinates can’t reach your tribal settlement smoothly, you can say goodbye to your family.” As he said this, he took out his phone and brought up two candid photos. Two equally majestic and might Gaomeng teenagers appeared on the phone screen.

The face of the bar owner turned blue at a speed visible to the naked eye.

Xing Conglian let out a low cough. Wang Chao hurriedly put away his phone, bowed, and said, “I sincerely wish your family all the best.”

The laws of the jungle were as such. Unreasonable people could live longer than reasonable ones.

After Wang Chao retreated, the bar owner, who was the second son of a distant cousin of the leader of the Gaomeng tribe, quickly changed tune. His eyes were full of anger, but his mouth was as sweet as honey. “Handsome Boss Xing, the son of Qi Naer of the Gaomeng tribe, is willing to help.” While speaking, he clapped his hands and said to his bodyguard, “Kanachal, go get my most expensive wine. I want to have a drink with our most distinguished guest.”

The moment the bar owner bowed his head and softened his attitude, his bodyguard instantly turned into a tender little woman.

Hearing that she was going to get the wine, the woman with muscles as hard as iron gave him a meaningful look, then swayed her figure and walked towards the bar.

The owner of the bar spoke again. “Honorable Boss Xing, it’s not that I don’t want to lead the way for you, it’s just that today’s rainforest isn’t like yesterday’s. The god of the rainforest has sent down a punishment from heaven. Anyone who trespasses will not be spared.”

Hearing this, before Xing Conglian could speak, Wang Chao said “so stupid” behind him.

Fortunately, Wang Chao spoke Chinese. Otherwise, if the Gaomeng man heard this, they would most likely have another fight.

Xing Conglian narrowed his eyes slightly, leaned back in his chair, and asked, “Can you tell me specifically what this ‘divine punishment’ is?”

The bar owner trembled. He leaned over quietly and said gloomily, “It’s death.”

“There has to be a way to die or some form of death?”

“No one knows. No one knows… The world falls into madness, and dead bodies pile up like mountains. Ashes will be everywhere, and even the Xazi Mountains will turn snow-white.” The bar owner clutched his chest devoutly, closed his eyes, and recited, “This is a prophecy—a prophecy of the end of the rainforest.”

When the Gaomeng people talked about things like death, they revered it as mysterious and mystical. Xing Conglian curled his lips, but Kang An and Wang Chao were visibly nervous.

“Boss!” Kang An grabbed the shoulders of his shirt tightly.

Xing Conglian thought for a moment and frowned. “What does madness mean? Does it mean that many people in the forest have gone crazy and disappeared? And what does it mean that corpses are burned to ashes? Did the Gaomeng people give up on burial?”

The bar owner closed his eyes tightly and kept his mouth shut, refusing to say another word.

When Xing Conglian wanted to press the issue, a sweet female voice came from his side.

“Distinguished sir, your drink.”

The bodyguard put down the wine tray, and there were two glasses of pure black spirits in the goblet. Before he could react, the woman took one of the glasses and turned around to sit on his lap.

The other party hooked his neck, pressed on his shoulders with her plumb breasts, and gently rubbed her ass between his legs.

The owner of the bar laughed loudly. “Mr. Xing, my Kanachal rarely likes someone. You might as well stay a little longer. I’ll let her accompany you. I guarantee that her skills in bed are some of the best in Dana.”

Xing Conglian looked at the woman snuggled in his arms. He looked into her amber eyes and said lightly, “Get off.”

His words were straightforward. The woman in his arms leaned back, spilling half of the spirits in the goblet and splashing it on his snow-white shirt. Xing Conglian looked at the stain on his chest and said coldly, “Don’t make me say it again.”

The woman who had been softened into a puddle of spring water instantly turned back into a tough female bodyguard. She slammed the goblet down so hard that Xing Conglian suspected she would pull a gun from somewhere on her body and shoot him in the head.

But he didn’t care about it. He bypassed the spilled glass of wine, picked up the glass belonging to the bar owner, and took a big sip.

The strong wine was extremely spicy. Mixed with the long, wet breeze from the window, Xing Conglian let the wine pass through his mouth. Such a strong taste made him think of Lin Chen when he kissed him hard. He could clearly feel Lin Chen’s hot body under his shirt, as if it were about to burn.

He looked at the liquid in the cup as deep as night. The dark color was like Lin Chen’s beautiful eyes.

He suddenly wanted to recklessly take Lin Chen to his side, in spite of everything. He didn’t know how Lin Chen was doing; whether he would encounter new dangers in dealing with the follow-up issues, and he didn’t even know if that idiot Huang Ze would harass Lin Chen again while he was away. Simply put, the reason he wanted Lin Chen to be here was only because he needed him to, not because Lin Chen needed his protection or for some other reason. This kind of thing that was beyond his reach and seemed to be out of his control hadn’t happened to him for many years.

In the distance, sporadic crossfire sounded, and further away, was the sound of mortars.

Xing Conglian sighed. He certainly couldn’t bring Lin Chen.

In a field of glass ballast, amidst the sound of gunfire, he took another sip of wine. He subconsciously looked to the southwest, but his vision was obscured by the Xazi Mountains.

‘I hope you are well in my absence,’ he thought as he gently set down the goblet of pure black liquid.

……

While Xing Conglian was wishing him well, Lin Chen’s situation wasn’t good.

This wasn’t because he was forced to cut the suture short and rush up to the fifth floor after he just got stitches, nor was it because of the hostage situation he had to deal with that involved Jiang Chao’s wife, but because the hostage-taking situation itself was far worse than he imagined.

Although Vice Captain Jiang Chao was already as anxious as an ant on a hot pot, urging him to enter the neurosurgery doctor’s office to start the negotiations, Lin Chen stubbornly stood outside, listening in detail to the interns who had just escaped from the office.

There was no Xing Conglian and no Wang Chao, so he didn’t have the invisible wireless headset or surveillance that could be retrieved at any moment. He could only use the most primitive method of inquiry to get a better grasp of the situation.

In front of him, a male intern looked so nervous as if he was about to be overwhelmed.

“Let me sort out my thoughts. Just now, a man with a knife entered the office and just started slashing for no reason. Then he took a hostage at the entrance. Director Li took the initiative to replace herself with the other hostage. The other party followed her suggestion, so now the current hostage is Director Li, right?”

The intern covered his face in shame, and his eyes flushed. “I’m sorry. I’m useless… I… I’m not a man at all. I actually let Director Li take my place… my…”

Lin Chen patted the man on the back and said with relief, “It’s Director Li’s will as your teacher to replace you. We all hope to rescue her smoothly, but only if you can answer my question calmly. First, has the hostage-taker made any demands? What I mean is, has he made it clear what he wants?”

“He… He said someone put a bug in his head and asked us to dig that thing out!” the intern said seriously.

Lin Chen frowned slightly and asked, “So is the hostage-taker a patient you have treated before?”

Several interns looked at each other and couldn’t answer this question for a while.

“I don’t seem to have seen him.”

“Me neither, but I’ve only been here for half a year.”

“Where are the nurses?”

Lin Chen turned his head and asked.

The nurses who were huddled together also shook their heads one after another. “We haven’t seen him before. He’s not a patient in our department!”

Chapter 89: Insomnia

After Zhong Chengshuo finished washing up, he left only the bedside lamp on. He was sitting on the edge of the bed, blocking the yellowish light, leaving the remaining shadows tinged with a deep blue.

Yin Ren slumped on the bed, holding a pillow. His black hair was gently tucked back by his lover. His unusual facial features were covered by Zhong Chengshuo’s shadow, with only a pair of eyes that emitted a dull red light.

Zhong Chengshuo moved his body and pressed both his hands on the sides of Yin Ren’s pillow, deepening the depression of the pillow.

He moved his body and lowered it, staring intently at Yin Ren’s lips.

As a result, Zhong Chengshuo’s head was just halfway down when his face was intercepted by a hand. Yin Ren’s palm was pressing against his nose with a force that was neither light nor heavy.

Zhong Chengshuo pushed his head downward, but the hand remained motionless.

“…?” Between Yin Ren’s fingers, Zhong Chengshuo was blinking in confusion.

Honestly speaking, Yin Ren couldn’t say what his psychology was. When Zhong Chengshuo was approaching, his heart was beating wildly. In order not to panic, he decisively stopped his heartbeat.

But seeing Zhong Chengshuo’s report-like expression, his expectation was instantly discounted by 20%.

Zhong Chengshuo’s shyness was obvious, and Yin Ren couldn’t understand it better. This person’s shyness at the moment was similar to rubbing his fingertips, and he always felt that something was wrong.

What was wrong?

Yin Ren pondered for a while. Zhong Chengshuo had leaned forward and pressed his lips against Yin Ren’s palms. His soft bangs shook slightly with his breathing.

The emotions in those black eyes turned into pure curiosity, with a little bit of inquisitive obsession. That bit of ambiguity was already on the verge of dying, but now had completely died.

Yin Ren regained his heartbeat bitterly. He closed his five fingers and pinched Zhong Chengshuo’s face.

“I was wondering why this looked familiar. There was a scene like this in one of the romance movies we watched!” Yin Ren pinched Zhong Chengshuo’s face, watching the man’s handsome facial features be rubbed out of shape. “You even learn how to start kissing people?”

Zhong Chengshuo: “Nn.”

Yin Ren squeezed his lover twice, then released him. Zhong Chengshuo shook his head and said, “Because the atmosphere is very suitable.”

Zhong Chengshuo’s arms were still resting on Yin Ren’s pillow. Yin Ren was still looking at the other’s face. His lover’s brows were full of seriousness, and he firmly believed in the rationality behind his actions.

Yin Ren didn’t know whether this was cute or hopeless. Although their experience in love was appalling, Yin Ren suddenly regained confidence in his emotional intelligence.

“The atmosphere is suitable.” Yin Ren grabbed Zhong Chengshuo’s arm. “What exactly do you think is suitable about this atmosphere?”

Zhong Chengshuo fell into contemplation. He seemed to be troubled by this question.

A strand of black hair wrapped around Zhong Chengshuo’s arm. It crawled across his clavicle, rubbed against his Adam’s apple, and then bit the man’s pale lips twice. Zhong Chengshuo’s lips were slightly parted, so the tips of the black hair brushed across his lips and teeth, staining it with an ambiguous luster.

“I wanted to kiss you because that’s what I wanted to do.”

Yin Ren raised his hand and touched Zhong Chengshuo’s cheek again. This time, he used both hands.

“You can do what you want to do. You don’t have to consider the rules of ‘ordinary people’. Like I said, I’m not an ‘ordinary person’.”

The doubts in Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes gradually faded and turned into some kind of affection that Yin Ren couldn’t understand. He was silent for a long time, letting Yin Ren continue to hold his face.

“What I want to do… Anything is okay?”

“Of course,” Yin Ren said confidently.

The bedrooms here were semi-enclosed. Although Zhong Chengshuo wasn’t a normal human, he had always been a measured person and wouldn’t act excessively inappropriate… Such a big and fierce guy; would he still be afraid of just hugging and kissing?

Yin Ren’s expectation secretly rose again.

However, in the next second, Zhong Chengshuo shrank back. He sat upright by the bed, put his hands together in a half-bowl shape, and leaned diagonally in front of Yin Ren.

Yin Ren: “?” Was it because he wasn’t familiar enough with modern times that he didn’t understand this mystical ritual?

He could only understand the meaning of this was “give me some money”, but it was embarrassing to admit that he didn’t understand.

Lord Ghost King maintained the inscrutability of the strong and tried his best to keep smiling. The ends of his hair had slipped under the pillow, and he was scratching the sheets anxiously.

Zhong Chengshuo didn’t notice these small movements. “Then I want some of your wings.”

“The kind that’s connected to your body.” As if he wasn’t sure he was clear enough, he added this solemnly.

Yin Ren: “……”

Wait, this wasn’t what he thought.

Yin Ren: “The bedroom here is semi-enclosed, and next door is a room full of people…” This behavior was simply inappropriate—!

“But you controlled your power very well last time. It’s okay,” Zhong Chengshuo said. “The evil qi index of this town is very high, and the Evil Force corruption is serious. Shian won’t be on guard all the time. And it’s dark here. Your wings are black, so it won’t be conspicuous.”

Yin Ren looked at Zhong Chengshuo in shock.

He actually dared to think about it comprehensively?

“You… What do you want them for?” Yin Ren tried his best to keep his smile steady—well, it was him who said “you can do anything”, so he had to maintain the confidence of the strong, or rather, the last trace of his dignity.

Zhong Chengshuo said, “Hold and sleep.”

When he said this, he flushed from his neck to his face, as if he were saying something extremely explicit.

Yin Ren lay on the bed like a corpse and looked at the cracked ceiling. At this moment, the cracks in his confidence were more obvious than those in the ceiling—facts had proven once again that he really didn’t understand what was going on in Zhong Chengshuo’s head.

But Lord Ghost King still did what he promised. The ends of the long hair gathered and melted, gradually condensing into a ball of translucent black wings. They jumped gently into Zhong Chengshuo’s hands, softly, just enough for him to hold them.

Zhong Chengshuo held them to his chest, as if he were holding a bouquet full of black flowers.

“Thank you,” Zhong Chengshuo murmured with obvious satisfaction in his voice. “I especially like this part of you.”

“You’re welcome.” Yin Ren laid flat with his hands dangling on the edge of the blanket, still staring blankly at the ceiling.

Hearing, “I especially like this part of you”, he suddenly didn’t want to know in what form of his did Zhong Chengshuo liked.

With the cluster of wings in his hand, Zhong Chengshuo stopped reading his book. He hurriedly went back to his side of the bed, took off his glasses, covered himself with the thin blanket, and pressed it firmly to his chest, as if he were afraid Yin Ren would regret it.

After lying down, Zhong Chengshuo closed his eyes and took a deep breath, burying his face in the warm wings.

It felt wonderful to the touch, like embracing a warm water bag with many silk noodles, but it was even softer and more elastic than a warm water bag. The wings were stained with Yin Ren’s smell. Zhong Chengshuo sniffed the warm and pleasant aroma, breathing quickly and evenly.

This was hard for Yin Ren.

He continued to imitate being a coffin board on the bed, carefully chewing on his regrets—those wings weren’t particularly at his command. Typically, he couldn’t control the touch of those wings.

Now they were like tender flesh that had just grown out of a wound; they were so unbelievably sensitive that they itched when they were breathed on. This was great. Not only was Zhong Chengshuo hugging them tightly, he also directly attached his warm breath at a distance of zero.

Those beautiful hands reached into the wings. Their ten fingers were deeply inserted between the gaps, and they moved unconsciously. The slightly rough fingertips caressed his newborn wings and were accompanied by Zhong Chengshuo’s moist breath, giving a touch that was indescribable.

It was like an extremely long, deep kiss.

Yin Ren’s breathing couldn’t help but become short. After realizing this, he immediately turned off his breathing.

This was not lifting a stone only to smash one’s own foot*. It was clearly summoning a meteorite to one’s own position. Mr. Evil Spirit, who was over a thousand years old, experienced insomnia for the first time tonight.

*Metaphor referring to wanting to harm others but ending up harming yourself (aka shooting yourself in the foot).

He simply turned around and looked at Zhong Chengshuo.

Yin Ren slept by the window. In order to make it easier to hold his wings, Zhong Chengshuo was facing Yin Ren’s bed. The curtains were tightly drawn, but this was no issue for an Evil Spirit who had night vision.

“What the hell are you thinking?”

The wings fluttered softly, adjusting their posture in Zhong Chengshuo’s arms. One of the wings was next to Zhong Chengshuo’s lips, soft and a little cold.

The trajectory for Zhong Chengshuo’s life should be extremely standard. It was impossible for such a person to become “King Yama” for no reason, let alone driving a serial murderer insane just out of sheer curiosity. He had to have a clear goal.

Studying him as an evil being may also be within that goal… But since they became closer, Zhong Chengshuo hadn’t mentioned it any longer.

Hair, blood, a small part of his body—if Zhong Chengshuo was willing to explain it to him, Yin Ren didn’t mind giving it out. He was also curious about his situation that he wished someone would figure it out with him.

However, Zhong Chengshuo had ruled him out, but he still showed interest in studying other evil creatures.

Yin Ren couldn’t figure it out. He didn’t know whether he was the strawberry left on the cake for the end, or the “research sample” that was ruled out by the other party because of his affair. Before he could see this person clearly, he couldn’t do things unreservedly.

“What on earth do you want to do?”

The wings swayed, leaning closer to Zhong Chengshuo’s arm.

If one day they could become “accomplices” in the true sense, what would that be like?

Yin Ren’s head was spinning for hours before he finally managed to close his eyes. He left a few waking strands of hair to watch Xiang Jiang’s movements, as the rest of his body fell into deep sleep.

He had a dream that he hadn’t had in a long time.

Yin Ren rarely dreamed. Even in more than a thousand years of deep sleep, he had never dreamed of anything. And in this place, this night, he dreamed of the past.

That was a very, very long time ago. He dreamed of dilapidated villages and wailing villagers. He dreamed of fragments of evil things he had eaten, spilling their dark ghost blood everywhere.

And the severe pain that accompanied his life like a shadow. After sleeping for so long, he thought he had forgotten it.

At the end of the dream, he left the deserted village and stepped onto the rolling mountains.

Yin Ren didn’t like this dream.

But two huge arms stretched out from behind him and held him. Thanks to them, the nightmare was a little bit better. It was just a particularly big dandelion that came with those arms, making him itchy as it rubbed against him.

……

Yin Ren opened his eyes again. The sky was already bright.

Xiang Jiang didn’t visit all night. Zhong Chengshuo still retained the posture when he fell asleep, but his face was buried deeper into his wings. The hairball of his nightcap was caught at the edge of the wing mass, and a small wing was rubbing against it.

Yin Ren took a deep breath and moved his mind. A group of wings swarmed up, rubbing Zhong Chengshuo’s face indiscriminately.

Zhong Chengshuo hugged the group of wings tightly and stuck his head out in a daze. “Morning?”

“Yeah, it’s morning,” Yin Ren replied sadly—he only slept for about two hours last night. Despite the fact that an Evil Spirit wouldn’t be haggard due to insomnia, he still felt he had suffered a heavy loss.

After all, today was still a workday.

Zhong Chengshuo glanced listlessly at Yin Ren. He lowered his head and kissed the edge of the wing closest to him. Yin Ren was surprised by this kiss, and his whole body shook.

This time, he felt Zhong Chengshuo give a light nibble with the tip of his tongue.

“I’m going to see if breakfast is ready.” Yin Ren gasped.

“Okay.” Zhong Chengshuo hugged the mass of wings tightly.

“Then I’ll… Zhong Chengshuo, you should let go first.” Lord Ghost King tried to snatch back his limbs. “I’m not trying to run away. There’s a chance next time.”

“There’s a next time?”

“…There is.” Yin Ren twitched the corners of his mouth as he gave a leathery smile.

He was a little suspicious that he had been calculated against, but he had no proof.

Forget it. Besides, he had already set aside his hair to accompany this guy before, so he could get used to this intimacy sooner. Now the influence had become two-way, so it barely counted as adapting, well, together.

This morning, Yin Ren got two pieces of news. One good, one bad…

The bad news was that the stock of braised vegetables was gone. They could only eat poached egg noodles with soy sauce—ingredients that were all made by Mayor Ren, who seemed pretty busy as she had already left for her office.

The good news was that she left behind a town guide. As long as this guide was around, Shian wouldn’t make the scene too intense.

“My name is Qi Xin, a clerk from the municipal government.” The woman nodded at them. “Are you going to the mine in the south of the town? I’ll accompany you.”

Unlike Mayor Ren, Qi Xin seemed less approachable. She was as thin as a hemp stick, and her hair was tied up in a tight bun. Her brows were slender, and the corner of her eyes had a reddish tint, making her look like she had just attended a funeral.

Her gaze swept across everyone present and finally lingered on Yin Ren.

“The mines in the south of the city are a bit dangerous. Mayor Ren doesn’t believe in evil things, but I need to tell you.”

She continued dryly.

“Over the years, dozens of people have disappeared there.”

The author has something to say:

Xiao Yin: Damn it, my (normal human) kiss!

Xiao Zhong: Buzzing wings are very natural.

It’s a long way to go, for the both of you (……

Kinky Thoughts:

Yin Ren is going to regret giving Zhong Chengshuo permission to do whatever he wants to do… more so than now.

Evil As Humans Ch88

Chapter 88: Kiss?

Gengsheng Town at night was comparable to a horror movie set in a warehouse, with three steps leading to a small evil and five steps to a great evil.

There was a customary “soft curfew” for the town. The shops would close early, so few would have their signs still up. Under the moonlight, there were more handprints and scratches on the signboards. There were rickety shadows squatting on the side of the street, while trees and bushes would rustle in the windless night.

After leaving the group of rookies in Unit 9, Xiang Jiang didn’t bother to hide his hostility any longer.

Spells were inlaid at the soles of his feet as he ran fast. Along the way, no evil creatures would rush up to attack him. His exaggerated earrings swayed wildly in the airflow and would clack against his jaw every few steps.

Although it was August, it was cooler in the mountains. Xiang Jiang was wearing a patchwork long sleeve fat sweatshirt with a bunch of colorful cloths hanging from him, but there was not a single trace of sweat on his face.

In a sense, his image was unusually consistent with the style of the evil things on the street.

Xiang Jiang bypassed the corner of the street and kicked mercilessly through a sewer lid that was lifted. Something that resembled a human head was poking out of it, and half of its head was taken off by the kick.

Its broken skull spewed thick black blood causing the surrounding evil creatures to swarm, gleefully eating this evil creature’s head. The latter was still “alive” with a piece of its skull missing, cursing from its various mouths.

Xiang Jiang didn’t bother to turn his head.

He soon arrived at the only hotel in town. Fu Xingchuan was sitting on a stool at the entrance, holding a braised duck leg that had two gnaw marks on it.

The lights in the front hall of the hotel were dim, and the night was dark, which made the duck leg even darker, giving it quite an off-putting look.

Xiang Jiang twitched his nose subconsciously, but he couldn’t smell anything.

There was no pie falling from the sky in the metaphysical world. The more powerful the so-called talent, the greater the price paid. Unlike Fu Xingchuan’s steady “academic schooling”, Xiang Jiang became a ghost master entirely based off of unconventional methods. After his ability became stronger, his five senses drastically faded.

“Sit.” Fu Xingchuan wiped his hand and dragged out another stool from the side of the flower bed.

Xiang Jiang didn’t answer but took a step back. “Minister Li isn’t here?”

“In his room. He’s busy reviewing his students’ theses. Just report directly to me. He doesn’t care about your performance.” Fu Xingchuan didn’t mind Xiang Jiang’s attitude. He retracted the stool casually and began gnawing on the duck leg again with a leisurely and contented expression.

Xiang Jiang hummed, still standing in the same spot, about a few steps away from Fu Xingchuan. “Everything is normal at the moment, but I need to know about the fog. This isn’t in the plan.”

“Giant ghost hitting the wall. We just did a closed test. It can’t stop the signal or the top science posts, so it’s fine.”

Fu Xingchuan had finished eating his duck leg clean. He casually pinched it, causing the duck bone to instantly support itself as it jumped to the trash can.

Xiang Jiang silently watched the duck leg bone bounce up and down.

“Take it as it comes. There are three possibilities for why the formation appeared—either we are purely unlucky, or some people here are also interested in Unit 9… Or, both.”

Xiang Jiang: “Why isn’t it aimed at Shian?”

“There’s no point in shutting down Unit 9. At least Lao Li and I can’t think of a reason.” Fu Xingchuan laughed. “If they find that Lao Li and I are here, Sunken Society will be eager to drive us away. It’s not like they’re ignorant about the situation.”

“…Also.”

Xiang Jiang turned his gaze to his feet again. He was wearing a pair of shoes, one black, one white, but his white shoe was stained with traces of trampling on evil things, which made it quite conspicuous.

The thick stains slowly flowed down the ground and were quickly absorbed by the cracks.

As the person in charge of this area, Xiang Jiang was fully aware of the particularities of “Gengsheng Town”.

Everyone here was corrupted with varying degrees of Evil Force, though the overall degree of corruption was very light. Despite that, Shian couldn’t determine the source of the corruption. According to the science posts, unless the earth regularly poured corrupted rain, it was impossible to achieve such an effect.

There were no ordinary people under the influence of an Evil Force. The people in Gengsheng Town were more or less all crazy, but they hadn’t developed to the level of “giving birth to an ability”.

Compared with the living, the performance of the evil things here was more eye-catching—they were like mushrooms after the rain; growing wildly here with some new varieties appearing from time to time.

Sunken Society worked hard in this close area for many years to build such an evil mountain town, whose aim wasn’t to test Shian’s firepower.

Xiang Jiang changed the subject. “Are we still proceeding according to plan regarding Unit 9?”

“Proceed.” Fu Xingchuan pulled out a wet towel. “If the sky falls, I will hold it back. Besides, the fog is also an opportunity. It’s better if the scene is bigger. We might be able to find the source of the phenomenon in Gengsheng Town.”

“Understood,” Xiang Jiang said succinctly. “Where are the supplies?”

Fu Xingchuan grinned, stretched his muscles, and dragged out two large plastic bags from the hotel hall.

“Here, lunch boxes. I also brought a lot of braised meat and mixed vegetables. Young people have big appetites. Remember to give some to Mayor Ren. It’s not easy for her.”

Xiang Jiang’s cloudy eyes moved, showing some blatant disgust. “The processed food here…”

“No ingredients. I have been using illusions. They thought I was one of ‘their own’ who came back to visit a relative from some other place. The amount they gave me is quite sufficient. Let me tell you, this pack of pickled vegetables is spicy, while this pack isn’t as spicy…”

After solemnly introducing the supplies for Unit 9, Fu Xingchuan took out a brand-new duck leg.

“Xiao Xiang, do well.” Minister Fu bit into the flesh as he mumbled indistinctly. “It’s up to you to get those two in Unit 9 to play more.”

……

An hour later, Xiang Jiang returned to the homestay as scheduled, bringing hot lunch boxes and mixed vegetables.

The five people from Shian set up a simple “braised food buffet” on the table. Even if the windows were full of evil things, the fire in the room became much more intense.

The braised vegetables were the unique flavors of a mountain town. The duck and tofu were delicious, and the mushrooms and potatoes were spicy and crispy. Yin Ren ate very comfortably, barely able to keep his mouth free.

Xiang Jiang frowned when he heard Zhong Chengshuo’s report about the “fight”.

“That group of people is a gang. I see them every time I come. They have used this method to screw up a lot of external projects.”

He mechanically ate his lunch box as he explained in a few words.

According to Mr. Xiang, the “old man was in charge”. This place was tough and extremely xenophobic. For safety reasons, Mayor Ren only dared let important guests stay at this homestay. The important guests were mainly government-related personnel.

“Their eyes were probably not as good as Zhong Chengshuo’s, so it’s easy to get tangled up with them. Before, at least eight people were forced to get involved in their disputes. This group of people slandered them for abuse and violence, and those who reported it lost their jobs and left.”

In the end, he didn’t need to finish. Even the old antique Yin Ren understood—anyone with a little ability consciously would avoid this troublesome place in the future, so naturally it was difficult to get things done.

“Why are they doing this? Is there any benefit?” Ge Tingting asked in confusion while she chewed on the braised vegetables. The AI’s speech didn’t delay her from eating.

“How should I know?”

Xiang Jiang put down his chopsticks. His appetite wasn’t even as good as Ge Tingting’s.

Huang Jin’s focus wasn’t on the living. He gave up on the compass that was spinning like a fan and said with a stifled voice, “Not to mention the fog, there are too many evil things outside. Is this really okay?”

“Surely it’s fine. Otherwise, how can Xiang Ge be in charge here for so long?” Yin Ren saw Xiang Jiang’s expression of “too lazy to speak”, so he happily answered.

After half an hour, the group of five became two, and the living room was replaced by a bedroom.

“There must be a problem. After all, Xiang Jiang has been in charge for so long and hasn’t solved it.”

Facing Zhong Chengshuo, Yin Ren’s tone became solemn—that was if he hadn’t been lying flat on the bed.

“Nn.” Zhong Chengshuo spit out the foam of his toothpaste and hummed in agreement.

Tonight, they would be sleeping together in a dignified manner…

The three semi-partitioned bedrooms were quite close. After a brief discussion, Yin Ren and Zhong Chengshuo took one room; Ge Tingting and a large pile of spirit weapons took another room; and Huang Jin, with an aggrieved look as if he had lost all hope, accompanied Xiang Jiang.

It was a pity that Huang Jin’s suffocation couldn’t affect Yin Ren’s good mood.

After washing up, Zhong Chengshuo hesitated for a while before he changed into his pajamas in front of Yin Ren.

Lord Ghost King was upright and turned to his side, without looking at Zhong Chengshuo from the back of his head.

But he was confidently happy because of this little thing.

Zhong Chengshuo’s thinking was so erratic that even Yin Ren’s 300 years of experience couldn’t grasp it. Recently, this person showed a little closeness from time to time that would also give him the feeling of being tickled by the tip of a small animal’s tail.

The single beds in the room were separated by half an arm’s length, which was no different from being connected. After a soft rustling sound, Zhong Chengshuo sat lightly on the bed, exuding the refreshing smell of herbal toothpaste. Yin Ren couldn’t wait to turn around and meet those familiar eyes.

Zhong Chengshuo was still wearing his glasses and sat in a reclined position with a book on his pillow. It seemed he didn’t plan to rest immediately.

“You were right just now. The situation here is complicated. We’d better not do anything during this execution mission.” Zhong Chengshuo sat by the bed and was carefully wiping his glasses.

Considering that Xiang Jiang’s room wasn’t too far away, his voice was as soft as a whisper.

Oddly enough, when this person wasn’t wearing glasses, he looked more mature than when he was. Yin Ren liked the way Zhong Chengshuo wiped his glasses. That person would lower his head, causing his long bangs to droop slightly and pieces of his black pupils would appear between the black hair.

There was a strange sense of purity.

Zhong Chengshuo’s hands were very beautiful—the slender fingers were slightly curled, the nails were neatly manicured, there were not many fine lines on the skin, and there weren’t many raised blue veins. Zhong Chengshuo’s bone shape was quite good; the lines on his hands were thin but not weak, which made people want to unconsciously touch them.

The more Lord Ghost King looked at it, the more satisfied he became. Distracted, what Zhong Chengshuo was saying went in one ear and out the other.

“I said, we’d better not do anything.” Zhong Chengshuo could see Yin Ren’s absentmindedness and repeated it with patience.

Yin Ren: “…Mr. Zhong, you really think highly of me. Do I look like such a dedicated person?”

He didn’t plan to do anything at all.

Even if this was an execution mission, Shian would not go as far as to give them a test involving human life. When he first stepped into this place, Yin Ren began to calculate how to lie through this execution mission.

No one would punish a waste. Besides, if the sky fell, the big honchos would support them, so all he needed to do was just decisively lie down.

Thinking of this, Yin Ren laid down even more magnanimously.

Zhong Chengshuo was leaning against the head of the bed, looking helplessly at Yin Ren—even though King Yama was well-informed, he had never seen such an unmotivated evil being.

Yin Ren looked at him with a pair of ochre-red eyes, full of concentration and smile.

There were no calculations, no haze; the evil thing just looked at him straightforwardly.

Zhong Chengshuo didn’t look away. He found that even if he looked away, as long as Yin Ren was still looking his way, the words on the pages of his book would jump around, making it difficult for him to concentrate on reading.

What should I do in this situation?

After thinking for a while, Zhong Chengshuo jerkily bent down and moved his hands around to adjust his posture for half a minute.

After confirming everything was correct, he brushed away Yin Ren’s long hair and slowly lowered his face…

Criminal Psychology Ch168

Chapter 168

The similar malice smelled familiar to Lin Chen.

Once upon a time, someone planned a similar incident in order to play with human nature, arouse the malice of bystanders, and at the same time prove to all the well-meaning people in the world that the ordinary people around you would always be more vicious than you think, and the world was truly bad.

In fact, Lin Chen also thought about the significance of similar games in human nature, but the questions about morality and good and evil in human nature were themselves the ultimate questions for humanity. Countless philosophers, scientists, and psychologists have debated this extensively since ancient times, and with so many people discussing it in their daily lives, it should be meaningful.

However, with Xing Conglian not around, Lin Chen didn’t bother to think too deeply in this direction. He wasn’t engaged in philosophical research. He was just a lovelorn person who was left behind by his crush. Even if he did understand these ultimate questions about mankind, it wouldn’t make Xing Conglian come back a day earlier.

Lin Chen’s mood suddenly faded. He stood up and threw the bloody, broken porcelain in the trash.

Jiang Chao kept yelling in his ears, saying, “This wound is so deep”, “Consultant Lin, you mustn’t”, “Consultant Lin, you have to bandage it”, and so on.

Lin Chen looked back at him and said lightly, “I know. Is there any gauze here? I’ll stop the bleeding first.”

“How can you stop the bleeding? We have to go to the hospital right away.”

Looking at Jiang Chao’s appearance, Lin Chen thought of Xing Conglian. Xing Conglian really knew him.

At the embassy that day, after he finished his interrogation with Li Jingtian, Xing Conglian took him directly to the infirmary for bandage, because he knew he didn’t like hospitals.

But Xing Conglian never pointed this out and embarrassed him; instead, he dealt with it thoughtfully and meticulously.

Lin Chen spread out his hand. He saw the bloody wound on his palm that was cut by the porcelain and felt he was really done for.

He looked back at the police officer, who was tapping on the keyboard quickly after hanging up the phone, and said to Jiang Chao, “I think the result will come out soon, so it’s fine to go later.”

Jiang Chao wasn’t Xing Conglian, so he couldn’t explain to him why he was being so tough. Seeing that he was persistent, Jiang Chao could only nod his head and then immediately run out to get him the medicine box.

Lin Chen sat down next to the computer again and said to the police officer, “AIH Insurance has opened up the inquiry authority for you. Why is this so simple?”

“I said there might be insurance fraud, so the person in charge got nervous. Speaking of which, Consultant Lin, why do you think these criminals wanted to murder fans for insurance? Could it be that all the fans have listed the same beneficiary? Then isn’t it easy for us to find out who that beneficiary is?”

Lin Chen thought for a moment, then replied, “Assuming there’s a common beneficiary—let’s call him Mr. A—how can we prove that Mr. A planned the fire at the Christine Cultural Center? You can’t just say he was going to kill people and defraud the insurance because he’s the beneficiary, right?’

“Then let’s dig deep into the relationship between Meijing, Xiang Ye, and the beneficiary, Mr. A. There will be clues.”

Lin Chen shook his head and said, “First, I’m afraid it’ll be difficult for you to find empirical evidence. Second, I think when you find the relationship, it’s very likely you’ll dig up a huge criminal network. At that time, you must pay attention to your personal safety.”

“Don’t scare me.” The police officer was a little terrified.

“I’m being serious.” Lin Chen patted the police officer’s shoulder. “But don’t be afraid. There are many people around you, including me.”

The police officer let out a laugh that was as absentminded as Jiang Chao. “It’s okay. I’m not afraid of death.”

Lin Chen lowered his head and smiled, patted the other’s head, but didn’t speak again.

The computer issued a notification that the calculation was over, and the policeman hurriedly turned his head. Lin Chen followed suit. Colorful contents appeared on the comparison form. Although he couldn’t sort it out, he still understood something based on the increasingly frightened expression of the police officer.

Seeing that the police officer finally pushed the keyboard away and turned his head to look over in a daze, Lin Chen asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Consultant Lin, the direction you mentioned seems to be correct. It’s very likely that the fire set by Xiang Ye and Meijing was really for insurance,” he said as he held down the form and dragged it to the middle position. “There are three groups of insurance beneficiaries in the same situation. The first group should be a pair of sisters, and the beneficiary should be their own mother. The second group should be a couple whose beneficiary should be their own daughter. The last group is the most suspicious. There are 21 fans who filled out the personal accident insurance for a Doctors Without Borders* organization.”

*A charity that provides humanitarian medical care. It’s a non-governmental organization of French origin known for its projects in conflict zones and in countries affected by endemic diseases.

“Doctors Without Borders?” Lin Chen was surprised. “Can a beneficiary be an organization?”

The police officer took a deep breath, then said, “It depends on the type of insurance, but since the beneficiary is listed here, it means that AIH Insurance approved of the purchase.”

Lin Chen nodded. “What you said makes sense, and I’m about to ask a dumb question.” He paused. “I just find it strange why these fans uniformly filled in the beneficiary for Doctors Without Borders…”

As Lin Chen spoke, he set his sights on the full name of the organization: [MSC Doctors Without Borders].

Lin Chen said to the police officer, “Can you calculate the total insurance amount first and then please check the relationship between Song Shengsheng and this organization and whether he has ever called on fans to donate to Doctors Without Borders?”

“Okay, I’ll check right away!” The police officer started to work.

Listening to the clacking of the keyboard, Lin Chen fell into contemplation again.

Could it really be that Meijing intends to murder more than 3,000 people just for the insurance claim of 21? The payoff was hardly proportional to the cost.

“Consultant Lin, I figured it out. Each person had a payout of 1 million, for a total of 21 million.

“US dollars?”

“Ah… The unit is our country’s currency.”

Lin Chen frowned. The amount was beyond his expectations. He was just about to say something when Jiang Chao finally came back with the first aid kit.

Lin Chen took the medicine box and, at the same time, informed Jiang Chao of the results of their investigation just now.

Vice-Captain Jiang patted his knees and said excitedly, “I know this organization. This is the oldest Doctors Without Borders organization in the world. My wife joined this organization before and also participated in a year-long medical aid operation in Africa. How could an organization like Doctors Without Borders scam people? I think it’s unlikely, right?”

Lin Chen nodded again. Jiang Chao’s words actually made sense. There was no reason for a Doctors Without Borders organization to do this. He opened the first aid kit Jiang Chao handed him and casually rummaged through it, looking for something.

Seeing that he wasn’t saying anything, Jiang Chao began to ramble again. “But this beneficiary unit is too strange. I think there does seem to be a problem with it. I’ll investigate it later. Consultant Lin, what do you think is going on?”

Lin Chen didn’t answer. He opened the bottle of hydrogen peroxide and poured some on his hand nonchalantly. Jiang Chao was dumbfounded. “Consultant Lin, you’re being too rough.”

Lin Chen grimaced in pain, then looked at the technical officer and asked, “Have you found the relationship between Song Shengsheng and MSC?”

The other party nodded and clicked on the news report. “You guessed it right. Mr. Song Shengsheng did donate a lot of money to this MSC organization ten years ago. Although he didn’t directly call on fans to donate to Doctors Without Borders, since he took the initiative to do so, it still made a huge appeal. The so-called insurance beneficiaries may be decided through internal discussion within small fan groups. We won’t know the specific situation until we find these victims and ask them about it.”

“In other words, it may be just coincidence that the beneficiary of the personal accident insurance of the 21 fans is Doctors Without Borders?” The severe pain made Lin Chen sober. He picked up the gauze to wipe the blood from his hand.

“Maybe?” The police officer said, “But 21 people, isn’t this much?”

21 was indeed a clever number. It wasn’t so prominent among the more than 3,000 victims, but it would definitely become a clue for the police. Lin Chen finally realized that what Meijing and Xiang Ye were planning might be far beyond their imagination.

He thought again about the problem that Meijing kept constantly tricking him on the rooftop. Meijing himself wanted to use the revenge theory to cover up the insurance problem of AIH. What if this 21 was also a trap?

Lin Chen wiped away most of the blood clots and then changed the piece of gauze and pressed it on the wound. “First answer me this. Is there a high proportion of Song Shengsheng’s fans who buy AIH Insurance?”

“Among 3,021 people, a total of 1,922 have purchased insurance from AIH. Although I haven’t done a specific difference analysis, this ratio is relatively high.”

“Nearly two-thirds?”

“Correct.”

“So, if we put aside the beneficiaries, it should be AIH Insurance that will suffer the most economic loss if their action was successful.”

“Shit, Xiang Ye and Meijing aren’t trying to bring down AIH, are they?” Jiang Chao said.

Lin Chen frowned. Although Jiang Chao was just asking a rhetorical question casually, Lin Chen felt this might be the answer. “First calculate the total amount of insurance that AIH Insurance needs to pay.”

When the police officer heard this, he stared at him with wide eyes. “That’s probably an astronomical figure. Even if it were 2,000 people at 1 million each, it would total up to 2 billion.”

“Is it enough to bring down AIH?”

Jiang Chao took a deep breath. “Consultant Lin, your speculation is too scary, but AIH is a multinational insurance giant. Compensating such an amount shouldn’t be enough to bankrupt them, right?”

“The total amount is 4.5 billion,” the police officer said.

Jiang Chao almost bit his tongue. “So high?”

“I remember that a certain country once experienced a terrorist attack. The amount of fire insurance claims after the attack directly led to its bankruptcy. The total amount of claims that the company had to pay is about 3.5 billion.”

“But I still don’t think this number can really hurt AIH’s foundation,” Jiang Chao insisted.

“Whether the injury is foundational or not needs to be judged by carefully studying AIH’s financial report. If the company is in a period of internal losses, there may be some problems.” Lin Chen pressed the gauze on his palm tighter. “But I really don’t know anything about financial matters. This is just simple speculation.”

“No, no, your speculation does give us a general direction!” Jiang Chao said with emotion. “Hurry up. I’ll send you to the hospital right away. Don’t get caught up in the sequelae. I can’t have Lao Xing cut me to death!”

Lin Chen barely heard Jiang Chao’s words. He fell into contemplation again, but this time he wasn’t thinking about Xing Conglian, but another thing. Since it took up to ten years to plan behind the scenes for this incident, their purpose couldn’t be just simple revenge or targeting a certain Doctors Without Borders organization. It may not even be that they wanted to bring down a certain multinational insurance company. The three purposes may be mixed together, so what if there was a fundamental purpose that they weren’t aware of?

When thinking of this, Lin Chen felt chills all over again. At the same time, he also felt they were lucky. If the people behind the scenes had made any mistakes in the past ten years, it must be that they chose the wrong person to implement their plan.

Fortunately, Song Shengsheng persisted.

Lin Chen couldn’t help thinking like this. This was really an extremely fortunate outcome, but it was also awfully sad.

He seemed to see that blond young man standing in front of him again, patting his chest proudly, and looking at him with a big smile.Looking at Song Shengsheng’s figure, Lin Chen thought, ‘It’s amazing that you persisted for so many years. Just leave the rest to me.’

Chapter 136

The tentacles were long. Dong Zhi specially picked out the fat and tender meat and cut it. After filling a small bag, he stood up contentedly.

“The weather is cold now, and this is raw. It can at least keep for a day. This means we don’t have to eat dry food all the time.”

Empathizing with the same kind, Lui Si, who also transformed to a living form, looked at the scattered tentacle “corpse” that had been cut into pieces on the ground and couldn’t help but twitch at the corner of his mouth while softly whispering, “What if this thing is poisonous?”

Dong Zhi said, “It’s okay. The tentacles of ordinary octopuses aren’t poisonous. If the tentacles were poisonous, we would have been poisoned a long time ago. I brought salt and cumin, so there’s no need to waste it.”

Liu Si originally had some psychological barriers, but when he heard about cumin grilled octopus tentacles, he couldn’t help but silently swallow his saliva.

Liu Qingbo: “…I can understand salt, but why did you think to bring cumin?”

Dong Zhi smiled and said, “When we were staying in Los Angeles, I went to the back kitchen. The chef found me favorable and gave me a small bottle of cumin powder. At that time, I thought that foreigners liked BBQ and might bring it for grilled meat, but who knew that they didn’t bring any and we ended up with grilled octopus.”

Liu Qingbo held his forehead. “Who taught you this habit of bringing everything with you? Does Boss Long know about this?”

Long Shen, who was far away in the eastern ocean, couldn’t answer this question. Dong Zhi happily packed up the pieces of tentacles and continued forward.

They weren’t sure if it was because of the loss of a tentacle, but along the way, they didn’t encounter any obstacles. They also didn’t run into people from the other teams. Until the evening, when the sun set, everyone had been walking in the maze for an entire day.

Compared to fighting zombies in the forest, naturally it was easier here, but everyone, including Dong Zhi, always felt that danger was lurking under the calm, and the upcoming night was the best protection for it. Often many accidents happen late at night, not during the day.

Dong Zhi looked up at the sky and said, “Let’s wait until it’s completely dark before stopping to rest. We can still walk for a while.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw a few drops of dark liquid on the ground at the corner in front of him.

It was blood.

Dong Zhi subconsciously wanted to step forward but was grabbed by Liu Qingbo. Dong Zhi gave him a comforting look and pulled his hand away as he slowly approached.

A person was leaning against the wall. His body was half-turned, and his eyes were closed.

When the other party heard the sound of footsteps, he immediately opened his eyes again and made an attacking posture. When he took a closer look and found that it was Dong Zhi and the others, he breathed a sigh of relief.

“It’s you guys!”

Dong Zhi was also surprised that the other party was actually Tom, who William said disappeared in the maze halfway.

“Why are you here?”

Tom said weakly, “Don’t mention it. Do you guys have any food? I’ve finished all my dry rations.”

Dong Zhi: “Did you bring a BBQ stove?”

Tom: “Yes. I still have it in my backpack.”

Dong Zhi smiled and said, “Then I invite you to have some BBQ octopus with us.”

Liu Qingbo: ……

The American was so hungry to the point of dizziness that he couldn’t even remember to ask where the octopus tentacle came from. Dong Zhi took out the mini grill from his backpack, skewered the octopus pieces, and grilled them. He also sprinkled salt and cumin on them, and in an instant, a fragrant smell wafted over, making even Liu Qingbo’s mouth water, let alone Tom’s.

The other party didn’t wait for the octopus slices to be fully cooked. He grabbed them and stuffed them into his mouth, greedily gobbling them down. His expression was so moved that he almost cried.

“God bless. Fortunately, I met you. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be monsters who killed me, but starvation!”

He finished off most of the big bag of octopus slices and looked at the nearly empty bag apologetically. “Sorry, I ate your meal.”

Li Han’er and the others didn’t speak but only stared sharply at him, making Tom break out in a cold sweat.

“What’s wrong? Did I eat too much?”

Li Han’er: “Are you feeling unwell?”

Tom touched his stomach. “No, it’s good. My stomach is full, and it’s very delicious!”

The corners of Liu Qingbo’s mouth twitched. “Since it’s delicious, you can have the rest.”

Tom was moved. “You’re so kind!”

After saying this, he reacted belatedly. “But where did you get these octopus slices? Could it be…”

His face turned a little pale as Dong Zhi comforted him. “It’s not what you think. We fished it from the sea.”

In a sense, octopus monsters should indeed live in the sea.

Tom was comforted and didn’t dare delve into it anymore, so he hurriedly divulged what had happened to him in the past two days.

Tom was walking in front of Lilith, but when he turned the corner, a tentacle suddenly stretched out. Before he could make a sound, it blocked his mouth and swept him away. He was caught off guard and couldn’t react in time, failing to take out his gun. In the end, he almost fell into the octopus’ mouth and became food. Fortunately, a group of Nordic people passed by and rescued him in time.

At the beginning, the Americans, Africans, and Northern Europeans were the ones who landed on Full Moon Island. However, after Tom disappeared, the Americans chose to withdraw halfway. They first went to Rose Island, which was infested with harpies, and then brought the British and Southern Europeans back.

In other words, if there was no accident, there should be many teams in this maze now.

Although Tom didn’t find his companions, he was happy to meet humans instead of tentacles, so he joined the Nordics. There was also a Russian member there. It was said that the other party was Anton. He was separated from his companions on Rose Island. Since he couldn’t find his companions and didn’t want to retire early to affect the honor of the team, he came to Full Moon Island alone. He also encountered the tentacles in the maze and was rescued by the Nordics.

Walking with a group of people was, of course, much safer than walking alone, but Tom didn’t expect that this was the beginning of his nightmare.

All of them rested on the spot that night. Tom’s sleep quality was never good, but because he was too tired during the day, he soon fell asleep and fell unconscious until he was woken up by a sharp pain in his chest.

“It was this little guy who saved my life.”

Tom took out a little squirrel from his arms. The other party was holding a pine nut and gnawing endlessly on it without making any sound. It wagged its big, fluffy tail and seemed to be in a good mood.

“This is my little pet. It’s very sensitive to smells. It bit me in the middle of the night and woke me up in pain. Guess what I saw?!”

Zhang Song was inpatient. “Don’t leave us hanging. Hurry up and tell us!”

Tom said that he saw a scene he would never forget.

In the darkness, a person squatted in front of another person, took out a bloody heart from his body, and chewed it with gusto.

After all, Tom was a practitioner, and no matter how frightened he was, he wouldn’t scream like an ordinary person. He thought he was dreaming and stared intently for a while, only to find that everyone else, except himself, had fallen asleep in various positions on the ground, covered in a mixture of the smell of blood and sweetness that was so strong it made people sick. However, they had not been awakened by the smell.

Tom quietly pulled a gun from his pocket, but the slight movement still alarmed the other person. The person stopped eating and turned his head to look, at which point Tom pulled the trigger.

“The exorcism bullet was useless on him!” Tom’s breathing was short. “He rushed towards me. I fired a few random shots, turned around, and ran away. He kept chasing me, but he couldn’t catch up. I ran for a long time before I was out of danger!”

Dong Zhi glanced at Liu Qingbo and immediately realized that, most likely, that person was possessed by the demonic qi.

“Did you see him clearly? Who is he?”

Tom shook his head. “I only know it must be a man, but in fact, I couldn’t see him very well. It was too dark, and I was too anxious at the time to carefully look.”

Dong Zhi patted him on the shoulder. “Then you can go with us.”

Tom nodded and looked at them carefully. “You guys—none of you are possessed, right?”

Dong Zhi asked for a bell from Li Han’er and threw it to Tom. “Tie it around you. If a monster approaches you, it will ring.”

Tom whistled. “How magical. Is this your eastern exorcism spell? What is it called?”

Dong Zhi lied. “It’s called an Octopus Bell.”

Li Han’er: ……

Tom murmured, “What a strange name.”

Night had arrived. Everyone gathered around a fire to rest. There were high walls to block the wind, so it wasn’t too cold. This was probably the only advantage over staying in the forest, since the wind kept blowing at them from all sides.

The news brought by Tom was very useful. At least now they knew the demonic qi was also in this maze, and they would be more vigilant.

It was Zhang Song and Yang Shouyi who kept vigil at night. Perhaps it was because the team was heavily guarded that the first half of the night was calm and safe. After the second half of the night, Zhang Song yawned and was about to wake up Yang Shouyi when something changed.

He saw countless huge black shadows falling from the sky, sliding down the wall from above, silently touching the people resting against the base of the wall.

At almost the same time he yelled, the bells on everyone’s bodies also rang.

Tom yelled, “The Octopus Bell is ringing! The Octopus Bell is ringing!”

“Shut up!”

Liu Qingbo and Li Han’er spoke at the same time as two sword lights struck the tentacles on the wall.

Although those tentacles were huge, they were extremely flexible. Despite not having eyes, they accurately sensed threats. At the moment when the sword lights were about to hit them, the tentacles shrank quickly, causing the sword lights to hit the wall and leave two deep indentations behind.

A few tentacles waved in the air and immediately fought with everyone.

The tentacles had great strength and strong destructive power. Most of the time, they were heavily pulled down. Even if people dodged, the tentacles would hit the maze wall, causing broken bricks and stones to fall. Even if it wasn’t fatal, it was still painful.

Li Han’er was busy dealing with the tentacle in front of her when suddenly another one appeared behind her, wrapping around her waist and lifting her up in the air. Liu Si’s eyes were sharp, and he acted quickly. He whipped his whip at the tentacle, causing it to shrink back in pain. Li Han’er fell from mid-air and flipped over, landing steadily.

Tom also drew out a big knife on his back to fight the tentacles. Despite his tall stature, his speed wasn’t bad. However, the tentacles were impervious to the knife. Only by infusing a blade with true qi could he cause damage. Otherwise, even bullets were useless. For a while, the sword lights and whip shadows danced around the thick and tough tentacles, leaving scars on them, which seemed to only anger them and make them launch an even fiercer attack.

A tentacle was thrown against the wall. The yellow stone brick wall quickly cracked, and the gap immediately widened. In the loud noise, the wall collapsed like a building and pressed down on everyone.

The tentacles seemed to be aware of the damage the brick wall could cause them, so they started to slam against the wall.

Visibility was originally in the dark. Even though Zhang Song and the others were agile, they could only protect their heads and were unable to avoid injuries to their hands, feet, and backs. Their faces were also scratched by the flying stones. However, the tentacles continued their rampage and even increased in number, dancing above everyone’s heads while being covered by the mist. The strong smell of the sea spread around them and was almost suffocating.

Liu Si whipped his whip and fended off the tentacles that came towards his head, but immediately another one attacked from behind. He reacted quickly, turned around, and launched an attack. However, the immense strength of the tentacle almost dragged his whip away. Liu Si poured his qi into it, causing the whip’s aura to become fierce and icy, like the wind on top of a cold mountain. The cold made the tentacle helpless and unable to find a gap to invade, so it switched targets, looking for another victim.

Zhang Song held a talisman in one hand and a sword in the other. After igniting the talisman with flame, he shot it out with his sword qi. One after another, the talismans fell onto the tentacles. The tentacles seemed to fear the fire and immediately shrank back. Zhang Song was like a person who discovered a new world, slowly, step by step, moving forward. Mount Longhu was rich and powerful, and Zhang Song was the legitimate heir of the Neishan School. No one knew how many talismans he brought this time. Although the fire talismans he used now weren’t as valuable as the Shangqing pill, they were still valuable goods for ordinary Taoists without any source. If they saw Zhang Song treating the fire talismans as toys, they would definitely curse him for wasting money.

Tom cut a gap in the tentacle with his knife and was so tired that he was gasping for breath. When he turned his head to look at Zhang Song, his eyes straightened.

“Oh my god, are you a magician or a wizard who knows who to play with fire?”

Zhang Song rolled his eyes. “You’re ignorant. This is called talisman magic!”

Tom imitated his tone, “Talisman flowers*?”

*Clarity: Because Tom isn’t a native Chinese speaker, he misheard Zhang Song say talisman magic [fu hua] (符花) and pronounced it back as talisman flowers [fu fa] (符法).

Because he was distracted, a tentacle slapped down and almost hit Tom’s shoulder. At a critical moment, Zhang Song pulled him back and used his sword to fend off the tentacle, causing his hand to become numb from the impact.

Compared to Zhang Song’s dazzling skills, Yang Shouyi seemed much more stable, but his attack wasn’t weakened in the slightest and was more than enough to fight three tentacles alone.

Although everyone was unhindered by the attack of the tentacles, this was only temporary. The owner of the tentacles was a giant monster with great strength. Even if they were practitioners, it was still difficult to deal with it, and with the passage of time, the loss of physical strength would only increase, which would eventually doom them.

Dong Zhi put on thick gloves, leaped onto a brick wall, and climbed up through the gaps between the bricks on the wall. He was fast and looked like he had practiced climbing trees on the rooftop of the Special Administration Bureau building all day—the wall was five or six meters high. When Dong Zhi climbed to the top, he turned on his flashlight and tried to find the body of the octopus monster.

To capture the thief, first capture the king. If they wanted to stop the tentacles, they had to completely get rid of the octopus monster.

The light of the flashlight was limited. The huge body of the octopus writhed and waved in the darkness, covering a large area of the city wall. As far as the eye could see, the source of the tentacles couldn’t be seen.

Without saying a word, Dong Zhi jumped directly onto one of the tentacles and grabbed it tightly with both hands. The tentacle felt something and shook hard in the air, trying to get rid of him, but Dong Zhi grabbed the suction cup of the tentacle and started climbing up on it. The tentacle failed to shake him off.

Liu Qingbo was stunned, but that didn’t stop him and instead he imitated Dong Zhi and grabbed the tentacle closest to him and climbed up.

There was mucus on the tentacles, which made things slippery. If it weren’t for the dense suckers, it would be impossible for anyone to grab it, especially when the octopus monster kept waving its tentacles around, making an even greater obstacle for their action. Liu Qingbo’s hands were sticky and slippery. As he smelled the fishy smell like seafood itself, he almost gagged.

“Fuck your uncle, Dong Zhi, I only wore this outfit*!” Not only did Liu Qingbo have to hold onto the octopus tentacle, but he also had to hold his breath from time to time due to the smell, which was more uncomfortable than being slashed with a knife.

*It’s an expression expressing frustration or dissatisfaction with one’s current situation, implying that they weren’t adequately prepared and didn’t expect to encounter a difficult situation. || In this context, Liu Qingbo is basically just venting his frustration.

Dong Zhi ignored him, or more precisely, Dong Zhi was unable to divert his attention to Liu Qingbo. He struggled to move to the end of the tentacle and aided by the light of the flashlight, saw a huge black shadow moving on the city wall from more than ten meters away. Its body was so huge that it was like a small mountain, which was truly a rare sight.

In order to find the stone tablets, in the underground river behind Liang Xuan’s tomb, they had fought against a three-headed giant python, but compared with the behemoth in front of them, the three-headed giant python seemed petite.

Dong Zhi found himself encountering a difficult problem.

There was only a small portion of the suction cups on the end of the octopus tentacle. He had climbed to the end of the suction cup, and beyond that was a smooth tentacle with no friction. He couldn’t stabilize his body on it, let alone get close to the octopus monster.

Dong Zhi laid on the tentacle, being tossed around like he was on a rollercoaster. He was racking his brains, but then he saw Zhang Song “playing” with the tentacles with talisman fire below. His eyes lit up, and he suddenly had an idea. He took out a Sunlight talisman from his pocket, chanted a spell, ignited the talisman, and threw it towards the tentacle.

The octopus monster was highly sensitive to fire. As soon as the symbol touched the tentacle, it immediately retracted. Dong Zhi was ready for this and held on to the tentacle tightly. He felt like he was riding a rocket as the tentacle retracted, bringing him closer to the octopus monster.

He had made the right bet!

Excitement, anticipation, and nervousness surged through him. He gripped his Changshou Sword. Having lost his flashlight somewhere along the way, he had to rely on instinct to judge how far he was from the octopus monster.

There seemed to be something blocking his way ahead, but Dong Zhi wasn’t sure. At that moment, a vigorous roar came from behind.

“Dong Zhi, your grandmother is a bear*!”

*(奶奶个熊) Offensive expression generally use to insult someone’s intelligence or character. It’s a euphemism for the more explicit and profane insult (grandmother’s legs), which is considered even more offensive.

Dong Zhi felt that Liu Qingbo might have become angry because he wasn’t as smart as him. He had recently directed his anger towards his uncle, but now he was directing it towards his grandmother. Dong Zhi wanted to tell him that both his uncle and grandmother had passed away long ago and that he had to look for someone else*.

*Clarity: Basically, Liu Qingbo first cursed using his uncle, and now he’s cursing using his grandmother. This is a joke on those curses in the literal sense that Dong Zhi’s uncle and grandmother are already dead, so it was better to find another curse saying from a relative that was still alive.

Liu Qingbo didn’t have talisman fire, so he couldn’t use fire to force the tentacle back like Dong Zhi. He could only cling to the tentacle as it thrashed about. While cursing Dong Zhi’s mother, he struggled to take out a flashlight and turned it on.

Because he was too far away, the light could only vaguely illuminate a silhouette, but it was enough!

Dong Zhi saw a pair of dark and round eyes slowly turning, which then flashed away under the light of the flashlight, allowing him to instantly determine the direction of the octopus monster.

With a flick of his wrist, the Changshou Sword turned into sword light and flew towards the target. The sword was cold, like dazzling starlight in the eternal night, and it was able to break through all the dark prisons and finally reach the other side of light.

The moment the sword light came into contact with the octopus monster, he seemed to hear an extremely shrill scream. It wasn’t a substantive sound, but it was like a heavy hammer pounding a hole in his mind. The shock caused Dong Zhi’s body to shake violently, almost causing him to fall from the air. The tentacles also trembled violently, swinging in the air with an even crazier arc, as if reflecting huge pain from the body’s owner.

At the same time, not only Dong Zhi but an earth-shattering cry sounded in everyone’s mind.

Liu Qingbo’s hand trembled, and he almost dropped his sword.

He subconsciously thought it was Dong Zhi crying, but then he realized that it sounded wrong. Such an impactful soundwave couldn’t be emitted by a human.

Holy shit, the noise is terrible!

He watched in disbelief as the tentacles he was holding suddenly shrank sharply, quickly shrinking to a size that was thinner than his sword. He could no longer hold on to it and fell directly from the air.

Dong Zhi was similar but a little better than Liu Qingbo. He managed to land on top of the wall. With a buffer, he didn’t fall too badly. The Changshou Sword also fell from mid-air and Dong Zhi reached out to catch it.

The huge tentacles disappeared in an instant, leaving everyone stunned. They didn’t know what happened. Only Dong Zhi, who was the closest, was able to guess the truth. He hurriedly took out his phone from his pocket and took a few random shots.

From his high vantage point, Dong Zhi was indeed able to find something useful quickly: a black lump under the base of the wall on the other side.

The thing moved slowly on the ground. Because one eye was blinded by Dong Zhi, black blood was flowing out and formed a small puddle underneath its body.

Dong Zhi was stunned as he looked at the octopus, slightly larger than his palm, unable to imagine that this was the octopus monster that had almost swept away everyone just now.

The crying continued in his mind. Whether it was the behemoth or the delicate little octopus in front of him, the crying voice was equally harsh and unpleasant. Zhang Song couldn’t bear it and shouted, “Stop crying!”

The little octopus really stopped crying, but its voice still trembled. Everyone’s temples seemed to ache along with its voice.

“They lied to me. They said only my tentacles would be cut, but they didn’t say my eyes would be stabbed too!” the octopus cried.

Dong Zhi discovered that the soundwaves transmitted by the little octopus could actually be turned into a tangible language and passed through his mind. Although it was English, it indicated that this octopus monster could communicate.

“Who are they?” he asked.

“The people who brought me to this island,” the little octopus replied.

“The organizing committee? Did they send you here to test us?” Dong Zhi asked.

Octopus: “Yes, they said there would be a competition here. They asked me to come to this island and act as an obstacle. I will be rewarded after the competition.”

Dong Zhi: “What’s the reward?”

The octopus cried out, “If you cut off one of my tentacles, they’ll compensate me with a ton of fish, but they didn’t say that they would compensate me if you poked out my eyes!”

Everyone: ……

The author has something to say:

Let’s wrap up this part first and then move to the other side of the story, Boss Long’s plot. Otherwise, there will be suspense left, so we need to let Boss Long fly for a little longer~

A small theater that has nothing to do with the text:

Dong Zhi: Master, I brought some local specialties back for you.

Long Shen: A specialty from the United States?

Winter Solstice: No, seafood.

Long Shen: ???

Kan Chaosheng rushes over: I want it!

Dong Zhi: …You’re both born from the same root. Why are you in such a rush to kill each other?

Kinky Thoughts:

“The same kind” refers to all non-humans. Whether it’s Kan Chaosheng, Liu Si, or the octopus monster, they basically cultivated enough to gain sentience, knowledge, and form similar to that of humans.

It’s kind of a joke as once they gain this cultivation form, it would be considered cannibalistic to eat “the same kind”, which is why Liu Si empathized at first when Dong Zhi was harvesting the tentacle.

Thinking it from another perspective, if one day cows, chickens, ect, possessed human knowledge, can communicate with you, will you still be able to eat them?

Chapter 167

As long as hard work was put in, anyone could make progress quickly.

Lin Chen read dozens of pages of materials again, took advantage of the tea break, and went to the network department. The two police officers inside were working overnight shifts as well. They took turns lying down on the table to rest, as if they couldn’t bear it anymore.

Seeing him push the door and enter, the one who was still awake looked at him blankly as he waved to him.

After all, this wasn’t the police station where he worked, so Lin Chen didn’t know the name of the other party. He could only nod his head and drag a chair over and sit down.

“You’ve worked hard,” he said to the police officer, who was still awake.

“Not as hard as you. How many hours have you not had a good rest? Just look at your face.”

Lin Chen lowered his head and took a sip of tea. Jiang Chao’s subordinates made him speechless, just like him.

But to be honest, since Xing Conglian and Wang Chao left, he really hadn’t had a good night’s sleep. Every time he wanted to close his eyes and rest for a while, countless pictures would flash in front of his eyes, one after another. For a while, it was a picture of Xu Ran being hit, and for a while, it was the scene of Song Shengsheng’s death. In short, those images that left the deepest impression in memory were also the easiest to emerge from the subconscious when the consciousness was relaxed. The one he thought about the most was Xing Conglian.

Lin Chen pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to wake himself up from this bad state.

Only the sound of the computer case was left in the office. The police officer smiled awkwardly a few times, not knowing what to say.

“There hasn’t been any progress so far, right?” Lin Chen held his teacup as he asked.

The other party nodded. “After cross-comparison, all the fans of Mr. Song Shengsheng seem to have nothing in common. Whether it’s age, life experience, locations, and the like, the only thing they have in common is gender.”

“Well, if they want to select victims, they will always use some statistical method to make it less easy for us to find the problem.” Lin Chen thought for a while and suddenly looked up at the police officer in front of him. “There’s another possibility. The personal files stored on the internet are still relatively simple. There should be something that isn’t on the file that’s very important, but we haven’t found it until now.”

“Like what?”

That’s a good question.’ Lin Chen fell into contemplation.

There were too many things that weren’t counted in the archives, such as what they bought on Taobao or if they had bought a book today… But the reason why Meijing and Xiang Ye chose Song Shengsheng’s fans was most likely because Song Shengsheng had influence over his fans, and most of the singer’s influence on the fans would be reflected through works and advertising endorsements.

Lin Chen remembered that Wang Chao had once made him a collection of Song Shengsheng’s MVs and advertising works. He patted the police officer next to him on the shoulder and asked the other party to open up his email and bring up the documents Wang Chao had sent.

Then he discovered that because too much time had passed, the files sent by Wang Chao had expired and couldn’t be downloaded.

Lin Chen subconsciously took out his phone, then realized he couldn’t call the teenager now. There would no longer be that sweet voice on the other end of the line.

He looked at the contact number in a daze for a while, until the voice of the police officer next to him called him back.

“I’m sorry. The information has expired, so I have to trouble you to collect it again.”

“Don’t say that. You’ve been helping us.” The other party scratched his head embarrassedly and suddenly said, “Why don’t you just transfer over here?”

Lin Chen was taken aback. He didn’t know where Jiang Chao’s men could come up with such whimsical ideas.

“I’d better not. My original unit is quite good.”

Before he finished speaking, Jiang Chao’s applause suddenly came from the door.

Lin Chen turned his head and saw Vice Captain Jiang clapping his hand twice. He patted his subordinate’s shoulder heavily and said to him, “Seriously, Consultant Lin, you should think about it. Hongjing is a small city. I know you and Lao Xing aren’t the types who pursue higher glory and officialdom, but as you can see, Yongchuan is a big city with a dense population. Criminals especially like to commit crimes here. Besides, don’t worry. You and Lao Xing have solved so many cases together. If Lao Xing is transferred, his rank will probably be just as high as mine.”

Lin Chen sighed inaudibly. He couldn’t tell Jiang Chao that the reason Xing Conglian chose Hongjing was because he wanted to live a less exciting retirement life. But speaking of it, Xing Conglian’s position in his retirement career may have undergone some deviations since he appeared.

“Let’s talk about it when he comes back.” Lin Chen could only evade like so.

“Hey…”

Jiang Chao sighed heavily as he pulled over a chair and sat down beside him. “What are you doing?” He asked the police officer, who was looking at information.

“Consultant Lin gave me a direction. I’m looking for some information.” As he spoke, he looked over again. “Consultant Lin, it will take me some time to find the materials. Would you like to take a break first?”

Lin Chen shook his head and took another sip of tea. “No, I’ll wait for you here.” He paused and then said, “I thought for a while. What Xiang Ye and Meijing planned should be a relatively slow-acting thing. Otherwise, they wouldn’t spend more than ten years waiting. This, of course, is most likely related to Song Shengsheng’s imprisonment. I’m afraid there are reasons for the time I just mentioned.”

“You’re very reasonable, but it really takes some time to check the materials from ten years ago.”

Lin Chen nodded. He rested his head on one hand and thought about the MVs and commercials he had seen. The pictures in his mind were switched frame by frame, and he felt the answer should be obvious, but in the last two days, almost all his thoughts were occupied by Xing Conglian, and any remaining thoughts were distributed to Wang Chao, so there wasn’t much energy to think about the problem.

What Jiang Chao said earlier wasn’t wrong. The real motivation of Xiang Ye and Meijing was an urgent matter, while he had more time to clearly think about the rest.

Thinking of this, the pictures in his mind suddenly stopped.

Song Shengsheng’s appearance in an advertisement appeared before his eyes. At that time, Song Shengsheng was still young. He was wearing a cap and huge sunglasses, and his collar was pulled extremely high, as if he were hiding someone. Subsequently, the ad screen gradually cleared. Lin Chen remembered that it should be in a hospital space. He carefully avoided the doctors and patients passing by, making people think he seemed to be up to no good. After a very thrilling period of time passed, he suddenly opened the door of the ward, then took something from his pocket and sprayed it into the air.

“Bang, bang, bang!”

He shouted.

As the ribbons fell from the sky, everyone in the ward was stunned. At this moment, the first person to react was a little girl lying on the hospital bed. The little girl covered her face and cried, looking very excited.

Song Shengsheng hurried over to hold the little girl in his arms and comforted her, like a prince charming in a fairy tale. He said to her in a gentle tone, “Sorry, my princess. I’m late.”

The subtitles then appeared, which showed: [AIH Insurance. Protecting you for a lifetime.]

A chill ran down his spine, and the porcelain cup in Lin Chen’s hand crashed to the floor.

The police officer lying on the table suddenly straightened up and shouted, “What happened!”

“Consultant Lin, what’s the matter?” The other police officer looked at him worriedly.

“Insurance… Have you checked the insurance of Song Shengsheng’s fans?”

“Yes, most people are on social security, so there are no problems there.”

“I’m not talking about social security. It’s commercial insurance.”

“It’s not in the file, so you have to go to the major insurance companies to compare the lists.”

“You don’t need to go to the major insurance companies. Just go to AIH.”

The police officer nodded. Although he had many doubts on his face, he immediately called the Yongchuan branch of AIH and communicated with the operator on the other end of the line.

Jiang Chao sat aside and listened inexplicably. His face was gloomy as he asked in a low tone, “Consultant Lin, what does this mean? Could it be that Meijing and the others wanted to burn thousands of Song Shengsheng’s fans to defraud the insurance company? Isn’t this something we can find out as soon as we check the beneficiary of the insurance?”

When Jiang Chao was talking, Lin Chen was squatting down to pick up the broken porcelain. Hearing Jiang Chao’s question, he couldn’t help but clench the porcelain in his hand uncontrollably.

No matter which part of AIH Insurance Xiang Ye and Meijing tampered with, using Song Shengsheng’s appeal to induce fans to buy insurance and then kill those fans, the sinister intentions were beyond normal logic. This was more like a ruthless mockery: Look, in the end, it’s not your favorite person who makes you buy things you shouldn’t buy but kills you.

Even though he couldn’t confirm whether it was an insurance issue or not, if Meijing managed to kill Song Shengsheng’s fans in the end, he couldn’t imagine what the public and media would say after learning about it.

And it was only now that he realized what Meijing said. The innocent victims in this fire would become brain dead fans. Many would say that if they didn’t chase stars, they wouldn’t die, so they deserved it.

How many people could clearly realize that there was no necessary causal connection between fans buying goods endorsed by idols and their deaths? It wasn’t Song Shengsheng who killed them; it wasn’t the insurance products that killed them; it was the malice of the forces behind the scenes that killed them.

But how many people who adhere to the true concept of right and wrong would clearly recognize this?

Lin Chen lowered his head and released his hand. His palms were flushed. Jiang Chao gasped violently in front of him but didn’t dare say a word.

Some people would say, “So that’s what happened. Who made them rush to buy things endorsed by idols.”

Some people would say, “I told you before that you shouldn’t buy things endorsed by stars. It’s all a waste of money, but this time it wasn’t just a waste of money but also a waste of life.”

Some people would say, “Maybe Song Shengsheng conspired with his agent to kill fans for money.”

Seeing such a similar statement would make anyone who was kind from the bottom of their hearts despair for human nature—and this was probably what Xiang Ye and Meijing wanted.

He suddenly thought of the question Wang Chao had asked. “Have you ever seen an extremely evil world?”
