Chapter 223: Pool of Blood

“Follow the direction agreed upon before!” Ruan Xian yelled in the whirring wind.

Another armed machine that caught up was shot down. Although Ruan Xian could do more with half the effort by relying on his perception, in the end, his strength was limited. The Mainbrain’s pursuers were getting harder to deal with—considering that their target was small, the number of their pursuers that caught up didn’t increase as time went by. However, in terms of ability, the strength of their chasers had risen extremely fast. Most likely, the Mainbrain had recruited them from nearby.

This wasn’t counting the R-α and M-α that were coming.

Tang Yibu couldn’t give him a hand. Ruan Xian had only one blood gun to deal with them, so if they were caught and became entangled, this would put them at an absolute disadvantage. Knowing this well, Tang Yibu was running for his life.

As agreed in advance, they ran in the direction of the forest petri dish.

Bearing the bumps of Tang Yibu’s galloping while still trying to deal with the enemy, Ruan Xian’s arm was so sore to the point of paralysis. The originally lightweight blood gun seemed a thousand times heavier. In order to ensure that Tang Yibu was in the best condition, he had to use his body to help him block a few shots.

While thinking in a trance, Ruan Xian suddenly laughed. He had a funny illusion—the inspiring appearance of the Mainbrain inexplicably reminded him of the past. Two cockroaches used in their test ran away, and a colleague, who was a neat freak, was walking on edge for the entire day.

The man’s eyes were red, and his blood vessels looked as if they would pop at any second. He almost burned down the entire floor.

If it weren’t for the fact that their goals were too small and Tang Yibu had the ability to reverse control the machines, Ruan Xian wouldn’t be surprised even if the Mainbrain moved an army of tens of thousands to them.

Fortunately, the light was just ahead.

The northside of the forest petri dish was adjacent to the Sea of Ruins, while the southside had a large forest. They were rushing towards that forest.

Tang Yibu plunged into the forest. Many machines that weren’t suitable for the woodland retreated, leaving only a few of the more dexterous ones still tracking. Just as they expected, the Mainbrain didn’t increase its troops—the two advanced products of the Prototype were about to arrive.

As soon as the two of them arrived in the depths of the forest, Tang Yibu put down Ruan Xian, whose clothes were soaked in crimson, and turned back to attack the remaining pursuers. At the moment, he also had a helper—a huge scavenger puppet was wandering nearby, and its program was hacked by Tang Yibu. He began to use its size advantage to clean up the battlefield.

π struggled out of the backpack. It rolled to Ruan Xian’s side and rattled anxiously, then used its round body to arch towards Ruan Xian’s hand.

“I’m fine. Just resting.” While the scavenging puppet wreaked destruction, Ruan Xian caught his breath. “There will be a tough battle in a while. You have to stay close to me.”

“Gwah!” the iron bead barked angrily.

“That’s not an enemy you can match.” Ruan Xian smiled. “Do as you’re told.”

After eliminating the most dangerous armed machines, Tang Yibu staggered to Ruan Xian’s side, pulled out a gross energy bar from his backpack, and stuffed it into his mouth. The escape just now consumed a lot of energy. Tang Yibu’s long back hair was glued to his neck and collarbone, covered in sweat. The original neat combat clothing was now in tatters and most of his skin was exposed. He was trying to adjust his breathing and his body was radiating an abnormally high temperature after excessive exercise.

“How far?” Tang Yibu asked Ruan Xian while swallowing the unpleasant food.

“Two minutes.” Ruan Xian knew what he was asking about.

Tang Yibu thought for a moment. He seemed to have made an important decision. He wiped his mouth and took out a can of candied cherries from his backpack. “I took more from the kitchen, so you can eat something too. If our energy isn’t replenished and we can’t keep up, we’ll definitely lose.”

After that, he hurriedly unwrapped a few energy bars.

Ruan Xian didn’t say much. He took the small jar, poured the overly sweet and greasy mixture into his mouth, and then chewed it. This kind of thing was indeed easier to eat, and the taste wasn’t bad. Ruan Xian stared at Tang Yibu, who was still gnawing on an energy bar, and threw over a paper bag.

“The snacks you ordered today. Here. The cookies and chocolates aren’t too dry. I can’t swallow them, so it’s yours.”

Tang Yibu looked at the empty jar of candied cherries, then at the food handed over by Ruan Xian, and froze for half a second. Ruan Xian couldn’t help but stretch out his hand and touch Tang Yibu’s sweaty hair.

“We will win, and then we will find a place where we can replenish.” He kissed the corner of Tang Yibu’s lips, suddenly with an inexplicable sense of satisfaction.

“…Even if we lose, we will lose together.”

Tang Yibu didn’t give a reply. He ate all the food that could replenish his energy in silence, then gave Ruan Xian some portable props for self-defense.

As the most dangerous enemy, the two advanced products arrived quietly.

A huge, twisted monster that was the size of a small car stopped at the top of a tree with a beautiful woman riding on it.

The monster had no fur. Its skin was an unsightly cyan-gray and its body was like a deformed tiger. Like Z-α, it was equipped with a tailor-made auxiliary exoskeleton. Its facial features were completely alienated, and the only thing resembling human was its eyes. The woman was exactly the same person that Ruan Xian had seen in the Mainbrain’s city—a younger version of his mother was looking down expressionlessly at them from the top.

Based on their looks, the opposing side was an advanced product of the A-type and S-type Prototypes, while their own side was the actual Prototypes. However, counting external auxiliaries—just the body modification and exoskeleton additions alone could improve the D-type products to the point where they could injure Tang Yibu.

It was like two heavily armed shooters with guns and bullets facing off against two unlucky fellows who were bare naked. The Prototype performance couldn’t make up for all the gaps. Strictly speaking, their odds of winning weren’t high.

From an optimistic standpoint, if they could defeat the two in front of them, the Mainbrain would be unable to create any more in the near future.

Ruan Xian took a deep breath and looked into the dark eyes of his “mother”.

He gently squeezed Tang Yibu’s hand. “Don’t be afraid.”

Taking the lead, the monster-looking M-α rushed towards the huge scavenger puppet. It stretched out its sharp metal claws and climbed all the way along the body of the scavenger puppet. The claws tore at the metal skin, cleanly cutting it like a hot knife cutting butter. The scavenger puppet let out a hoarse wail as the connecting pipe on its body spewed out white and yellow liquid.

M-α leaped to the scavenger puppet’s throat with such speed that Ruan Xian could barely catch it. The puppet suddenly came to its senses and used all its limbs to flee the scene. Tang Yibu had relinquished his control over it.

M-α didn’t hesitate at all because of this act. It took advantage of the height of the scavenger puppet and bounced straight in the direction of Tang Yibu. Tang Yibu didn’t force himself to stand. He arched his back and dodged the blow like a leopard. Ruan Xian pretended to be harmless and hid in the bushes with bated breath. He firmly grabbed the blood gun in his hand and concentrated on finding M-α’s flaws.

With the S-type advanced products present, their opponent could quickly recover, so the method they used to defeat Z-α couldn’t be used a second time.

They had to come up with a better way.

The replica of his mother was firmly grabbing on M-α’s body, sitting very still. Ruan Xian’s bullet couldn’t break through M-α’s exoskeleton, and the opponent continued to attack without any pain or fear, without putting this “researcher” in its eyes at all. Ruan Xian could see that if it weren’t for the fact that Tang Yibu’s cybernetic brain couldn’t be damaged, M-α’s attacks would be much fiercer.

So far, Tang Yibu had focused on defense while occasionally would take the offensive. Although he could cope with the speed, it was only a matter of time before he would lose.

The enemy wasn’t paralyzed by his attacks. Through the gap of M-α’s attacks, R-α also acted—the beautiful woman extended her arms and the breath from her mouth and nose became dark red. As soon as Tang Yibu’s left hand came into contact with the poisonous mist, ulcers and abscesses started to spread, like an explosion, along his fingertips, climbing all the way up his arm.

Due to the injury, Tang Yibu’s movements slowed. He gritted his teeth and took out the concentrated blood that Ruan Xian made for him and quickly injected it into his body. Only then was it able to suppress the spreading infection in his arm.

As R-α spat out poisonous mist, a transparent pipe on its body stretched out and connected to a notch behind M-α. Black and red blood were slowly injected into the monster’s body, creating a deadly poisonous mist armor. Tang Yibu’s face was covered with sweat as he was heavily panting, but he still didn’t give up.

Seeing that the enemy had no intention of giving up, the monster opened its deformed mouth, which was about a meter wide, and took a bite of Tang Yibu’s slow-moving left arm. Blood splattered everywhere as it swallowed the broken arm.

“Flesh. Body tissue sampling is complete.” The woman on its back whispered as she tilted her head like a puppet made of wood. “It’s being crushed and encapsulated. The remaining 95% is ready for M-α to absorb and digest.”

The voice was exactly the same as the mother in Ruan Xian’s memory.

“NUL-00, the Mainbrain sincerely recommends that you surrender,” she continued. “Unnecessary pain doesn’t do any good. If you surrender now, we just need to take another sample of Ruan Lijie and we’ll allow you to keep your body intact for the time being.”

The second half was obviously a lie, and they all knew it.

Tang Yibu continued to avoid the attack as he took a few more concentrated blood vials. His left arm was slowly growing back, but the speed was too slow. Hearing these words, he subconsciously turned his head and glanced in Ruan Xian’s direction.

Ruan Xian closed his eyes.

They had considered a powerful chaser, but they never thought the Mainbrain would be so cautious towards the so-called researcher. He and Tang Yibu didn’t agree on a detailed combat strategy in advance, which was the downside of going off the rails—they had to face these extraordinary bad situations.

After a deep breath, Ruan Xian responded to Tang Yibu’s gaze. He smiled at the android.

Those golden eyes gleamed in the night, as beautiful as ever. Tang Yibu was determining his status, and Ruan Xian knew it. The android was probably also desperately calculating possible tactics.

But he could give him a little hint.

It was a good thing to hold information in his hands, and now he had another chance to change things… As long as Tang Yibu could help him do it.

“Is there any more ‘medicine’?” Ruan Xian’s voice was quite calm. “Separate them. Half a minute is enough.”

After that, he rushed out of the bushes.

His movements were so sudden and unexpected that the enemy paused momentarily. Tang Yibu didn’t ask any questions. He chopped off the nearest tree trunk with his backhand and took the opportunity to throw it directly at R-α.

“Run,” Ruan Xian ordered, and threw the iron bead to Tang Yibu. “Yibu, run.”

In an instant, Tang Yibu’s eyes changed from puzzled to sparkling. His plan was crazy, but the android understood.

Ruan Xian enjoyed this strange sense of resonance for a while. He picked up the attack props that Tang Yibu gave him and activated them all, no matter what they were—they really wouldn’t hurt M-α, but they could still provide some annoyance and distraction.

Tang Yibu quickly ran away and soon disappeared, while “Ruan Lijie” stayed in front of M-α, trying his best to slow it down with various distractions—at first glance, this looked like an undoubtedly desperate situation.

R-α, who was flung away by the tree trunk, was quickly returning to its position, while M-α was roaring at Ruan Xian.

He was running out of time.

Ruan Xian took out all the remaining mechanical nerve disruptors from his pockets. This time, he didn’t mix them into his own blood but injected them all into his body through his pants.

M-α was huge in size, and unlike when facing Z-α, he couldn’t temporarily make enough blood agents. Without Ji Xiaoman and the others around and Tang Yibu had brought limited items, he didn’t have the time or tools to make more.

…But it didn’t matter.

In the buzz of mechanical traps, Ruan Xian raised his blood gun and directly hit the four eyes of the two enemies on the opposite side. While M-α opened its mouth and roared, Ruan Xian rushed towards the monster’s open mouth.

The moment before his vision turned black, Ruan Xian saw R-α was hurriedly injecting blood towards the monster underneath it.

The Mainbrain knew how Z-α had died. It was killed by him, a “mechanical life expert specializing in viruses”. Without knowing that the S-type Prototype still existed, the slightly manipulated blood was destined to be interpreted as some kind of virus. Since it was a virus, R-α blood treatment was reasonable.

Ruan Xian curved the corners of his mouth.

What followed was pain, enough to break one’s nerves. Few people could live to experience the feeling of having their body being chewed to pieces, but Ruan Xian still forced himself to stay conscious—even if he only relatively had his head intact.

This time, it was his turn to count down.

Three.

In severe pain, the smelly space he was crumpled in was spasming.

Two.

R-α, who had noticed the abnormality, continued to feed blood, but its actions only intensified the process.

One.

The dark and narrow space was vibrating. M-α let out a painful wail. Ruan Xian felt the wind again—this time, the monster’s body didn’t dissolve but simply exploded into a pool of blood.

Without his lungs, Ruan Xian stopped breathing, but he could feel the vertebrae growing and his internal organs rapidly maturing. His body was using this puddle of flesh and blood as a nutrient to quickly restore his human appearance.

The identity of the S-type Prototype couldn’t be concealed any longer.

His regrown lungs began to work again, and Ruan Xian coughed up a mouthful of blood. His newly grown body was extremely weak, and he was naked, covered in black and red plasma, and he couldn’t even stand up.

R-α was stunned for a full three seconds because of this unexpected situation.

This was its fatal mistake—in the next moment, its whole body was pierced by a section of a tree trunk and nailed to the ground. They finally had a short recovery time.

“Look.”

Ruan Xian wiped the blood from his face and grabbed Tang Yibu’s outstretched hand.

“I told you we would win.”

Chapter 222: Before the Storm

Time returned to lunch break.

Ruan Xian spent the whole morning collecting information floating in the big room. There wasn’t much conversation between the researchers, and the information given by the light screen was intermittent. He struggled to extract usable information from the messy mixture, but the Mainbrain’s confidentiality was really good—even with the power of the S-type Prototype, Ruan Xian didn’t get too much out of it.

High-intensity and long-term perception would no longer make him lose his strength, but dizziness was inevitable. Before meeting with Hu Shuli, Ruan Xian rested against the wall for a while so that he could concentrate again.

“How do you feel?” Hu Shuli was still his usual self.

“I feel… that’s it, it’s okay.” Ruan Xian didn’t rush to throw out the bait, and replied stiffly. “I have finished reading the basic information. Do you want to transfer work, let me research freely, or set a new topic?”

“Where’s the mechanical assistant?” Hu Shuli returned to the topic with a smile.

“About that… It’s just that sometimes he’s not quite like my Yibu,” Ruan Xian replied in a low voice.

“You can train him. It’s very simple. Moreover, it’s a technology that has matured since 2100. The Mainbrain is very good at sensing subtle emotional changes. As long as you spend a month with him, you’ll find that he’s not much different from NUL-00.”

“What do you mean? Whether it’s a fake or not, I won’t misidentify it. You promised you’d keep Yibu alive, and I will not budge on this.”

“Xiao Ruan, what do you think people are trying to do?” Hu Shuli waved his hand, signaling for his mechanical assistant to pour Ruan Xian some tea. “You should have seen a lot of things along the way. Can you still accurately define what a “person” is now? You have a lover, he’s still what he is, and he’ll still give you the feeling you used to have. What’s wrong with this? What the body and brain are, isn’t important… Why torture yourself like that?”

When he said this, Hu Shuli’s eyes were a little gray.

“Of course, you can try it yourself. The phrase ‘ignorance is bliss’ has its own truth, so I won’t try hard to persuade you.”

It seemed that the Mainbrain had no intention of obediently fulfilling its promise. Seeing that “Ruan Lijie” took a step back, it tightened the thread on Hu Shuli’s body and pressed harder.

“Since you said you wouldn’t try hard to persuade me, let’s skip this topic.” Ruan Xian immediately stood firm. “My opinion will not change.”

“Then have you ever thought about working for the Order Supervisors? People want to change, so perhaps such a step is needed.”

“I said, change the subject.”

“Alright, I just don’t want you to fall into my old footsteps.” Hu Shuli smiled. “Sorry. Regarding work, you just said that you have finished reading the basic information?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have any feelings?” Hu Shuli chatted slowly while operating the light screen in front of him.

Ruan Xian hesitated for a while before pulling up a light screen in front of him. “See for yourself.”

Hu Shuli narrowed his eyes and didn’t connect the data to his processor. He let it float in the air, then stood up and walked to Ruan Xian to look.

It seemed the Mainbrain hadn’t let go of its guard against him.

It didn’t matter. Even if the small trap in the file wasn’t successful, the other party’s actions could give Ruan Xian what he wanted. Ruan Xian moved over to make room for Hu Shuli. He quickly glanced at Hu Shuli’s desk and quickly burned all the content on the light screen into his brain.

“A brief analysis of the viral destructive ability of S-type advanced products.”

Hu Shuli’s ability was obviously good. He quickly browsed through the report given by Ruan Xian and saved the content by copying the image.

“I took a look at it. It’s a very interesting idea. However, R-α’s ability may be out of date, and changes must be made… Let me take a closer look. Before dinner today, I will give you the result.”

“What about this afternoon?”

“I’ll give you second-level permission and will authorize a part of the specific body data of R-α. Remember not to look around. The Mainbrain will record every interface you visit.” Hu Shuli’s tone was very polite. “If you behave well, the days that follow will only be easier.”

…It would be weird not to look around.

Tang Yibu wasn’t there in the afternoon so Ruan Xian obediently stayed in the big office all afternoon, making sure that there was nothing else that could be squeezed in this area. The newly authorized data were all information he had already known, such as “Ruan Yuchan’s son”, which was little help to them.

A well-behaved day was indeed easy. He didn’t have to worry about shelter, food, and life, or whether enemies would suddenly appear. There was plenty of time to rest and various entertainment outlets at his disposal—these were all excellent humans the Mainbrain had selected, so they didn’t need to undergo much adjustment like people in the city.

When he returned to the room, it was also well taken care of, as if he had an invisible housekeeper. His “lover” was looking at him with a smile and came over and gave him a welcome hug.

Ruan Xian did have the feeling of being carefully taken care of. At that moment, he understood Hu Shuli’s fall very well. If he didn’t have a strong enough belief—or paranoia—it would be difficult to break free from this sweet trap.

Fortunately, he was precisely someone who was paranoid to a fault.

Ruan Xian smiled at the assistant robot who looked like Tang Yibu, then sat back by the bed and activated all the light screens. He turned off the lights, and a fluorescent blue light flickered in the darkness.

“Let’s play a game,” He said this to the shell after glancing at the time. “Close your eyes and count to one hundred. We’ll play hide and seek… just like we played before.”

Ruan Xian then made a simple move. He let the flashing blue light screens float into every corner of the spacious room. It created a figure similar to a strangely shaped deep-sea fish. Those light screens quickly flickered with all kinds of information, swimming slowly in the dark. He then hid himself in the closet and quietly clasped one of them in his hands.

For 100 seconds, he must disrupt the Mainbrain’s attention as much as possible.

Using the acquired second-level authority as well as the information obtained from Hu Shuli, Ruan Xian began to try to carefully obtain project information about R-α.

“…85, 84, 83…”

The encryption used by the Mainbrain was very complicated. He had to crack Hu Shuli’s account to break in as him, as well as handle these unlucky obstacles at the same time…

“…73, 72, 71…”

Ruan Xian’s breathing became a bit chaotic, so he simply just held his breath, grasping every second in the crowded darkness.

He tried his best to gently pry open the thick shell in an attempt to touch the pearl within. The thrill that he could be discovered at any moment made his entire body tense like a stone, and the information that kept scrolling on the screen occupied all his thoughts.

“…49, 48, 47…”

Almost there.

Will the Mainbrain find out? Will Tang Yibu return in time?

“…16, 15, 14…”

The layers of blockade finally revealed gaps. Ruan Xian quickly scanned the contents of the project. It was more than he thought, and he was running out of time. Ruan Xian could feel the sweat burrowing out of his pores, itching like ants crawling all over.

“5, 4, 3—”

Tension tightened his insides like wringing rags. Ruan Xian couldn’t hold his breath anymore and swallowed the air silently.

“2.”

He was able to look at it two more times.

However, he didn’t wait for the “1” to be said. The screen in front of him suddenly became blank. In the next second, Ruan Xian smelled a familiar smell—a mixture of smells from decaying wounds, fresh potions, and a replica of his mother. Beside her, there was a stronger smell, like a human but with the fishy scent of a beast.

He heard the woman’s shallow breathing and the monster’s ragged, low panting. They were approaching. The most recent threat had appeared—the closet door was suddenly slammed open and Tang Yibu grabbed Ruan Xian, who was inside, and put him directly under his arms.

Ruan Xian: “……”

“Just like last time, I can only temporarily interrupt the Mainbrain’s surveillance,” Tang Yibu said. “Did you get exposed?”

“Yes, but the situation isn’t right.” Ruan Xian didn’t have time to care about this strange method of transportation. “R-α is rushing here with some kind of creature—I’m guessing it’s M-α.”

“How much information did you get?”

“Enough.”

“Then let’s go.”

Tang Yibu sandwiched Ruan Xian between his arms and broke directly through the glass window of Ruan Xian’s residence. They were in the middle to upper floors of a certain building, so the android directly leapt into the void when he jumped out. During their descent, Tang Yibu shot out several grappling hooks, single-handedly latching on to a surveillance flying machine in order to slow down their crazy and dangerous descent.

Even so, when they landed, Tang Yibu still groaned—at any rate, he maintained a stable landing posture, allowing Ruan Xian to escape the tragic fate of slamming into the ground.

Ruan Xian didn’t talk nonsense. He immediately bit his tongue and gave Tang Yibu a bloody kiss, then pulled the other party to run along the established route.

“Now I’m pretty sure it’s R-α and M-α,” Ruan Xian said as he ran. “They have the same smell of preservation fluids and will be here in about 20 minutes… Hm, provided you didn’t miscalculate.”

“Just looking at the information, MUL-01’s reaction was too great.” Tang Yibu’s voice sounded aggrieved. “It doesn’t know how to behave like a human at all! Even against me, it’s not necessary to send both—”

Neither of them spoke after that. In front of them were layers of high walls. This time, Tang Yibu carried Ruan Xian on his back. With two free hands, Tang Yibu was able to quickly climb over the walls one by one.

The nearby patrol machines chased after him like hornets. Ruan Xian rummaged through Tang Yibu’s bag for a few seconds, but before he had time to reach for the blood guns, two rattles came out. The iron bead had the guns in its mouth and poked its head out among the mess of supplies.

“Good boy.” Ruan Xian gently pressed π back into the bag and grabbed the attack blood gun and started shooting at the army of machines chasing them. “Stay quiet. Don’t make a sound… Yibu, those two things are getting closer.”

The siren sounds were getting louder. Fragments of mechanical explosions cut the two of them. Stone and metal debris showered on their bodies like rain. Not to mention the two approaching large disasters, right now, the army they were dealing with almost overwhelmed the two of them—Tang Yibu didn’t have the slightest room to attack. He was putting all his energy into fleeing, like a frightened loach jumping around trying to dodge a rain of gunfire.

“I’m already running as fast as I can!” Tang Yibu wiped away the ash from his face. His voice was coarse like sand. “Mr. Ruan, hang in there!”

“Your brother is quite shady.” A beam of light grazed his cheek as Ruan Xian raised his voice. “The plan needs to be temporarily adjusted again, Yibu.”

“Yes, obviously.”

… …

In the darkness, Hu Shuli sighed at the flashing screen in front of him. It broadcast to him in real time an image of two young people fleeing, and he dutifully uploaded it to Zhuo Muran.

“In the end, he’s still too young,” he lamented.

“They are likely to hit R-α and M-α head-on. The Mainbrain requires the images to be accurate and recorded down to every detail. Call out 80% of your flight recorders.”

“Ah, understood.”

“You don’t seem to be enthusiastic, Mr. Hu.”

“I wasn’t really interested in your idea in the first place. I’m just a little tired. That young man has some talent. What a shame.”

Hu Shuli glanced at the report at hand—it was the only report left by Ruan Lijie. He had just finished writing his suggestions and understanding, and he wanted to discuss it with the young man tonight.

After all, he seemed to have a unique understanding of the S-type Prototype, and by recruiting him to their side, who was to say they couldn’t reproduce the Prototype that Ruan Xian had made. As a result, the young man would have a good life, but instead he chose to rush to his death for so-called love.

It was truly stupid and familiar, just like his original self.

“…I’ll broadcast and record it well. Don’t worry.” Seeing that Zhuo Muran was still waiting for his answer, Hu Shuli shrugged his shoulders.

“Regarding Ruan Lijie’s identity, you have to continue to investigate it. Even if there are a lot of impurities mixed in, even if you have to restore the genetic fragments bit by bit, you have to figure out where he came from. He’s definitely more than just a tool for NUL-00. You must be personally responsible for this matter, Mr. Hu.”

“Give me the specific mission statement later. You know the routine,” Hu Shuli responded with little enthusiasm. “…But does this even make sense? The two war weapons are almost here, and they will be wiped out.”

“The Mainbrain wants to know. I don’t ask why.”

“Got it.” Hu Shuli lowered his gaze. “I’ll do it as soon as possible.”

Chapter 221: Contrary Words

Ji Xiaoman woke up early, but she deliberately slowed down her breathing and heartbeat to bring her physiological indicators closer to a coma.

When she was still manufacturing cybernetic brains in the Underground City, in order to verify the effects of various drugs and hormones on the cybernetic brains and make them react more like humans, she often used herself as the test subject to obtain the physiological data that humans should have. Over time, she developed a resistance to the drugs that act on the brain.

This resistance made her wake up an hour early.

Because her prosthetic limbs were embedded in a clever way, they only had their function disabled and weren’t removed from her. Ji Xiaoman cautiously moved—her limbs were locked to a chair by some complex locking mechanism.

There was no one around, but most likely she was under surveillance. Ji Xiaoman continued to pretend to be in a daze, quietly moving slowly while testing the locking mechanism.

Unlike Yu Le, who was a leader, this young girl had lived in the Underground City for many years and had worked hard to steal information related to the cybernetic brain. Ji Xiaoman was very good at giving up control.

The fixation on her wrist wasn’t complicated. Although it had been improved a lot, she recognized this kind of lock.

Her two joints of both hands had two copies of corrosive liquid hidden in them, which could be triggered only by a physical organ. She just needed to trigger them at the right time and mix the two seemingly harmless lubricants. Escaping from the chair wasn’t the problem. The hard part was what happens after exposure—even if she gained her freedom, she may not be able to escape.

If she was locked in a high-profile cell, the guards could arrive within five seconds. The corrosive mixture could be used only once. If she was stopped by another lock, she would have no chance of winning.

Ji Xiaoman carefully analyzed the locks on her wrist while adjusting her breathing.

“Xiaoman.” She didn’t know how much time had passed when she heard a familiar voice.

It took a lot of effort to lift her head—her mother was sitting squarely in front of her with a familiar smile on her face.

Fake.

Ji Xiaoman could tell from a glance—in the battle against Qian Yigeng, her mother’s limbs had irreversible wear and tear due to her changing form. Although the mother in front of her was realistic, there were slight differences in the length and structure of her arms and legs.

As a mechanic, she was all too familiar with such imperceptible errors.

Of course, the Order Supervisors could’ve also directly stripped her mother’s cybernetic brain… But she was currently recognized as a “supporter of Ruan Xian” on the surface, which meant she believed in the inseparability of brain and body. If they did this, she might not recognize the identity of her “mother” anymore.

After thinking about Professor Ruan’s current state for a while, Ji Xiaoman couldn’t help but sigh in her heart.

…She didn’t know what the rest of the resistance would think when they knew the truth.

Now it seemed that either the Order Supervisors didn’t find her mother, or her mother was in their hands and was hidden. Ji Xiaoman stared at the mother in front of her—an overly perfect figure; probably some form of projection.

“Xiaoman, tell mom what happened recently,” she said. “Don’t be surprised. Whether it’s the cybernetic brain or body, as a reward, the Mainbrain can perfectly repair them… What you see now is just an image that is integrated again after copying the data of the cybernetic brain.”

‘Sure enough,’ Ji Xiaoman thought. Most likely, they were concerned about her identity as a mechanic, so they decided to choose a relatively honest route.

“…I have nothing to say,” she answered after much thought.

“You only left the Underground City after I had my accident. You also admired Ruan Xian before, but mom knows that you only admired his technical skills, not his ideals.” The phantom persuaded her patiently. “Come back, Xiaoman. I’ll take good care of you. We can live as before.”

Ji Xiaoman had no doubts about the technology of the Mainbrain. She was very sure that, according to her understanding of it, it would give her an ideal and gentle mother. That mother would have all the memories of when they got along and would no longer cause her the slightest unhappiness. Her “mother” would retain the main data that would be cleaned up and reordered and make subtle and cumbersome adjustments. However, such a mother wouldn’t know her real name and she might not be her mother’s “original appearance”.

After all, even Ji Xiaoman herself wasn’t sure what she really wanted, and she didn’t know whether she had the right to transform her mother and to what extent.

“Mom is thinking about you.” The woman in front of her continued softly.

“Where’s Yu Le?” Ji Xiaoman didn’t respond positively.

“Yu Le is next door. He’s not injured,” The image of her mother said in a softer tone. “Do you need some time to think about it for a while?”

“…Yes.”

The woman thoughtfully handed a glass of water and held it to Ji Xiaoman’s lips, and the little girl drank it obediently.

“I heard about your agreement with NUL-00. He’s just using your technology, just like Professor Ruan is using you to divert the Mainbrain’s attention.” Seeing that Ji Xiaoman’s mood had stabilized a little, the image of her mother struck while the iron was hot. “Xiaoman, are you really happy in that team? Does anyone care about you? Believe me, there is no difference between NUL-00 and MUL-01. As for Ruan Lijie, who was with NUL-01, I think you have already discovered that his personality isn’t normal.”

“The Glass Conservatory, the test results of the prevention shelter,” Ji Xiaoman whispered.

“Yes. Neither of them will care about you. You seemed to care a little about Yu Le, and he is by your side.”

“…Nn, I know.”

“Tell mom everything you know. Even if Ruan Xian concealed key information, just the marginal information is still useful.”

Her “mother” smiled softly and sweetly.

“Then we can live in the Mainbrain’s city, and your limbs can be properly treated. If you confess clearly enough, the pressure on Yu Le would also be less… You can all stay out of this war.”

Ji Xiaoman looked at her mother’s image quietly.

“I know,” Ji Xiaoman answered. “I, um, I’m willing to cooperate.”

The woman nodded in relief, and the shackles on Ji Xiaoman’s limbs were suddenly untied. However, the door in the room was still tightly closed.

“I only have one question.” Ji Xiaoman remained in the chair without taking any drastic action.

“Hmm?”

“Before the Great Rebellion of the 22nd Century, what projects did Ruan Xian work on? I have something to confirm.”

The woman blinked. It wasn’t the question she was expecting, but she still gave Ji Xiaoman the detailed information—except for the encrypted project details, there wasn’t much sensitive information in it.

Ji Xiaoman looked it over carefully and frowned.

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing. It just made me stick to my decision even more.” She smiled reluctantly at the woman across from her.

Ji Xiaoman didn’t understand much about human feelings, situations, and negotiations. She had never been good at reading people. She was just in her early twenties, and all her enthusiasm was spent on studying the relevant knowledge of cybernetic brains and machines and escaping possible harm.

So she now had a fairly simple standard.

Ruan Lijie was the real Ruan Xian. Although he was crazy, he was very disciplined in his work. Before the Great Rebellion, he was mainly responsible for the medical research of nanobots and even the AI project that was commissioned by the Institute.

The information given by the Mainbrain allowed Ji Xiaoman to confirm this—Ruan Xian’s work was normal. At most, he was a researcher with outstanding achievements, and he hadn’t done any strange and egotistical projects.

He had never hurt others inexplicably before.

Then his madness, abnormality, and coldness had nothing to do with her. After a long hibernation, Ruan Xian and Tang Yibu’s behavior had saved her, and that was enough. So far, Ruan Xian was “credible”.

As for the Mainbrain and Professor Ruan, no matter how much they promised her, Ji Xiaoman wasn’t going to buy it in one fell swoop.

They had never set foot in her world, so they were “temporarily untrustworthy”.

“I really don’t have any great ambitions,” After a long silence, she whispered. “I’m not an important figure in the rebels and I don’t have much… of an obsession with Ruan Xian. Mom, I’ll tell you everything, but I have a condition.”

“Hm?”

“Let me meet Yu Le and confirm he’s alright.” Ji Xiaoman stared at the door. “Not hologram images. That’s too easy to fake. I want to meet him in person. The Order Supervisors can lock us up together… Anyways, we don’t have weapons, so we can’t do anything.”

The woman didn’t answer. Ji Xiaoman raised her eyes. “This is the only condition for me to confess.”

More than an hour had passed. Ji Xiaoman walked into the room under Yu Le’s alert gaze—the latter had his muscles tense, waiting for “something bad” to happen. In a sense, something bad did happen.

Ji Xiaoman was wearing a standard jacket of the Order Supervisors.

Yu Le took a deep breath. “Little Profiteer, you…”

“Yu Le, you know very well that I always prefer to let others decide for me.” Ji Xiaoman spoke slowly so all her words could clearly be heard. “What’s more, things have come to this point. We have no other choice.”

Yu Le’s face twisted strangely, but he didn’t say a word. His expression tensed, but he remained silent.

“Anyways, I have never liked collective action much,” she added. “Especially that rattling Grove creature. I’ve had enough of it. I decided to tell them everything.”

“Idiot. You?” Yu Le yelled. “Do you really think they believe what you have to say? Compared to those inexplicable people, at least you should believe in me more.”

“Like I said, this is the only way.” Ji Xiaoman pursed her lips while avoiding Yu Le’s gaze. “At least I think it’s reasonable. The Mainbrain doesn’t need to spend a lot of energy on dealing with us two little people. It’s giving us good conditions, so it’s okay to compromise.”

“Just like when you were happily working with Qian Yigeng in the Underground City? Rushing to improve the cybernetic brain, wishing to be the dog legs for others?” Yu Le continued to roar.

It was complete irony, but it sounded violent rather than contrary, that the Mainbrain shouldn’t have noticed.

…It seemed that he understood Ji Xiaoman’s intentions. She quietly breathed a sigh of relief. In terms of playing tricks, Yu Le wouldn’t let her down.

After calming down, she continued the conversation. “It’s useless for you to insist like this. I’m pretty sure we can’t escape. It’s stupid to keep insisting at this point—”

Yu Le didn’t answer this time but looked at her with a complicated expression. Ji Xiaoman held her breath and made her voice sharp.

“As of now, I’ll just straight up say it… Among everyone in the group, I hate you the most!”

Then her chest heaved for a while, and she turned to look at the projection.

“I want to stay here,” she said. “Mom, I’ll try to convince him.”

“Good.”

At the same time, the progress of the two on the other side wasn’t going too smoothly.

“Your brother is quite shady,” Ruan Xian said loudly, over the sound of trembling sirens. “The plan needs to be temporarily adjusted again, Yibu.”

“Yes, obviously.” Tang Yibu’s face turned pale. “During today’s lunch break, are you sure you didn’t say anything to Hu Shuli that you shouldn’t have said?”

“Are you sure you did every step correctly when we slipped out?”

“I’m sure! Unless your shoes are half a size bigger…”

“Alright, alright. We’ll be fine.” Ruan Xian sighed with a smile as he hugged Tang Yibu’s neck tightly. “At least there’s no delay in time and I have taken everything that should be taken. Just make sure we don’t get caught.”

“Mm.” Tang Yibu jumped to the top of another wall with Ruan Xian on his back. His voice was somewhat broken. “But when you first came out, you said that R-α and M-α are nearby.”

“This is the feeling of being adaptable.” Ruan Xian sighed. “It’s quite exciting and I’m also adapting—relax, at least for now, we’re far from hitting a dead end.”

As Ruan Xian spoke, he brushed Tang Yibu’s face with one hand.

“And you’re enjoying this feeling, aren’t you, Yibu?”

Ruan Xian retracted his hand and spread his perception to the max. His next words vibrated from his vocal cords, hitting his ear drums before rumbling in his skull—

“You’re laughing.”

The author has something to say:

Criminal Psychology Ch16

Chapter 16

Xing Conglian thought, ‘Three years.’

For three years, Feng Peilin watched Lin Chen.

Whether rain or shine, Feng Peilin always sat quietly in front of this window, looking at the young man who was even quieter than him and worked in the dorms opposite here.

He probably watched Lin Chen reading and writing or Lin Chen talking with children.

Xing Conglian couldn’t help but shiver at the thought of this.

He returned to the police station with the book and the letter, with a handful of sand in hand.

The raw pleasantries were over, and the atmosphere was cold and collected.

Lin Chen slept lightly in a chair, covered by a police uniform.

The police uniform had silver stars sparkling on it. Inspector Huang was sitting next to him in just a white shirt. His legs were crossed as he flipped through the documents in his hand while holding a glass of warm water in his other hand.

Xing Conglian was stunned. There were so many chairs in the room, yet Huang Ze chose to sit next to Lin Chen.

Inspector Huang sat so naturally that it was as if he deserved to sit there.

Xing Conglian became unhappy.

Fu Hao had just walked around from behind Xing Conglian. When he saw the situation in the office, he hurriedly pulled the person that was frozen at the door into the room.

Lin Chen had just opened his eyes.

Seeing them return, he stood up and smoothly hung the clothes that covered him on the armrest and didn’t look at Huang Ze.

“I have a fever and need some antipyretics.”

Lin Chen’s tone was weak, but his request was blunt. His desire to leave the police station was all too obvious and unconcealed.

Huang Ze chuckled and put down the notebook.

Just when Xing Conglian thought Huang Ze was going to say something like, “Personal matters are forbidden during official business hours”, he instead heard, “Remember to buy aspirin. He’s allergic to most antibiotics.”

This made Xing Conglian even more angry.

……

Perhaps it was because the typhoon was about to make a landfall and the city was shrouded in the eye of the storm, but the rain had stopped.

Lin Chen’s footsteps were weak, but he still insisted on walking. Xing Conglian couldn’t convince him, so he had to walk by his side, while Fu Hao walked at the end feeling guilty.

The sound of their footsteps fell on the bluestone slab that was still wet from rain, kicking and stamping, sticky and greasy.

Although the questions in Xing Conglian’s heart were rolling up into a snowball, such as what was the relationship between Huang Ze and Lin Chen, and why did Huang Ze’s attitude towards him made a 180-degree turn, Xing Conglian didn’t ask about this kind of idle gossip. He took out the evidence bag from his arms and handed it to Lin Chen. “Feng Peilin left you a book and a letter with a handful of sand. What’s the relationship between you and him?”

Lin Chen was a little taken aback.

But for some reason, the astonishment wasn’t because Feng Peilin left him something, but because Xing Conglian didn’t ask him any questions related to Huang Ze.

In this world, there were too many people who loved to inquire about the privacy of others, and few could hold back their curiosity that was bubbling inside their hearts.

Lin Chen raised his head and looked at Xing Conglian and said sincerely, “Thank you.”

Xing Conglian shook his head and continued, “Looking out from the window of his desk, I can see your room.”

When Lin Chen heard this, he stood still for a moment.

“He’s watching me?”

“Should be.”

Because of the high fever, the fragments in his mind floated like a montage. The white sand in the sandbox, the eerie market, snow-white sheets, bright red bloodstains; these images were switching frame by frame, making a confusing jumble.

A long time had passed that it was enough to return all the pictures back to the very beginning and long enough that the raindrops on the eaves had all fallen off.

Lin Chen stuffed the evidence bag back into Xing Conglian’s hands and took a few steps.

Xing Conglian looked at Lin Chen’s back and narrowed his eyes slightly. Lin Chen’s appearance showed he was obviously thinking about something but didn’t want to say it.

Helpless, he could only speak to Lin Chen’s back. Although he didn’t want to, he had to pretend to be aggressive. “Yu Yanqing wrote to you, while Feng Peilin watched you every day. I can’t ask about your past, but you must be clear about everything that’s related to this case.”

His words were so straightforward that Lin Chen’s footsteps naturally paused. “What does Captain Xing need me to make clear?”

Lin Chen turned around and faced him.

“Do you know Feng Peilin?”

“No?”

“Then why did he leave this letter for you? What exactly does the white sand in the letter mean?”

“Simple. It’s because I have a sandbox in my room, and he wanted me to know that all the analysis I had done was nothing more than what he wanted me to see. He’s provoking me.”

“Why does he want to provoke you?”

“I don’t know?”

“You don’t know?” Xing Conglian was speechless. “For more than three years, he has been peeping on you every day, planning murders and provoking you, yet you don’t know why?”

Xing Conglian’s words were mocking. He was ready for Lin Chen to respond unceremoniously, yet Lin Chen turned around slightly and a smile appeared on his face.

It wasn’t one of mockery or a sneer, like if he was angry, but a very simple smile, as if the question Xing Conglian just asked was extremely interesting.

“Captain Xing, you may not know this, but in this world, whether they are psychopaths or high-IQ criminals, there are very, many, that want to provoke me. If I care about the motives behind every time this happens, then I should just stop living.”

This was a reasonable statement, and it left Xing Conglian dumbfounded.

“Why?” Was all he could say.

“Because I was once really, really famous.”

This was a proud statement, but coming from Lin Chen’s mouth, there was no boastful implication. Instead, it was more like an honest declaration, so much so that Xing Conglian found it cute.

If he was an ordinary person, he would probably have laughed out loud when he heard such a statement, but Xing Conglian was extraordinary, so he nodded and said solemnly, “I would guess so, seeing as I’ve never met anyone as smart as you.”

Xing Conglian’s eyes were beautiful. When he lowered it to stare at Lin Chen, it felt as if those lake-green eyes were as deep as the sea.

After all, this was a man with foreign blood, which gave him a special complementary racial advantage.

Lin Chen’s face unexpectedly blushed.

It was quite embarrassing. After all, for the first half, his tone was sharp, as if he was about to get into an argument with Xing Conglian, but then it was shortly followed by him blushing due to being praised. He was obviously too unfocused.

However, since it was he who brought up the topic, he could only blame himself. Lin Chen coughed lightly and asked, “Time is short. I think Feng Peilin is probably going to commit suicide.”

“Yu Yanqing committed suicide, and now Feng Peilin is doing the same?”

“Yu Yanqing is just a chess piece controlled by Feng Peilin. He’s probably just used her to perfect his ideas.”

“What idea?”

“People can overcome fear of death through training related to it. This was our previous inference.” Lin Chen paused, then said, “And the reason why I think Yu Yanqing isn’t the murderer is because she didn’t have sufficient motivation to commit the crime.”

“But Feng Peilin does?”

“Yes. Men have an oedipal complex*. If I’m not mistaken, Feng Peilin should have grown up in a single-parent home, single-handedly raised by his mother, Feng Xuejuan. As you know, children’s distortions are often inseparable from their family. If I didn’t guess wrong, Feng Xuejuan was probably extremely controlling and probably made her son act according to her will…”

*Concept in psychoanalytic theory introduced by Sigmund Freud. It is a purportedly universal phase in the life of a young boy in which he hates his father and wishes to have sex with his mother. These wishes may be unconscious.

“Speaking of which, one of the teachers at the school told me that Feng Peilin would call his mother every time at the prescribed time. This was probably at Feng Xuejuan’s behest?”

Lin Chen nodded. “Such control will lead to two results.”

“What results?”

“First, extreme rebellion. Second, extreme obedience. He regards his mother as a God and respects her words as if he respects God’s will.”

Xing Conglian couldn’t help shuddering.

Without waiting for Xing Conglian to indicate that this was too heavy, Lin Chen went on to ask, “If you were Feng Peilin and the tragic state of your Goddess fell and splattered to the ground into a pool of blood and was seen by others, what would you think?”

Although he wanted to vomit, Xing Conglian had to admit that if he was Feng Peilin and his mother, whom he revered as a God, died tragically in front of others, it would indeed give rise to the urge to kill.

“Even if Feng Peilin wanted to kill all the unrelated people who witnessed his mother’s death, why did he use Yu Yanqing and why design such meticulous steps to overcome death?”

“Of course it’s because he’s afraid of death.” Lin Chen gave Xing Conglian a look as if to say, “What an idiotic question”.

“Feng Peilin is having fun playing with the dead, yet he’s still afraid of death?”

“To be precise, Feng Peilin’s mother, Feng Xuejuan, is afraid of death,” After speaking so much, Lin Chen’s voice became hoarse, and the volume gradually got lighter. “Do you remember the ward Yu Yanqing was assigned to clean? It was the oncology department. Feng Xuejuan has stomach cancer, which is one of the most excruciatingly painful diseases, so much so that she committed suicide because she couldn’t stand it, but even more so because she couldn’t stand the thought of having to slowly die while experiencing it…”

“So he’s actually using Yu Yanqing to study how to make people feel less pain when facing death?” Xing Conglian responded quickly.

“It seems as if his research was successful,” Fu Hao couldn’t help but interject. “Yu Yanqing did commit suicide, willingly.”

“So what about Feng Peilin?” Xing Conglian asked.

“All his research is so he can face death calmly.” Lin Chen cast his gaze into the distance. “We previously thought that Yu Yanqing’s death training had four steps. Getting close to a corpse, observing a murder, killing someone with your own hands, and committing suicide, but if we change this to Feng Peilin, there’s a fifth step.”

“Get close to a corpse, observe a murder, kill with your own hands, help and watch Yu Yanqing commit suicide, then commit suicide?” Xing Conglian blurted out.

After speaking out, he felt there was a problem with this. “Who did Feng Peilin kill?”

“Check to see if there are any homicides missed by the police,” Lin Chen said indifferently.

If Lin Chen wanted you to believe in something, you would.

Of course, Xing Conglian trusted Lin Chen, so he quickly took out his cellphone and called Wang Chao. He asked him to investigate all homicides in recent days that had been missed and to check all surveillance videos where Feng Peilin might have appeared.

Then, he called the traffic division of the police department and asked them to set up city-wide blockades and hunt down Feng Peilin.

After a few phone calls, Xing Conglian fell behind them but was surprised to find Lin Chen was by his side and instead it was Fu Hao who had absent-mindedly walked in front of him.

Seeing that he had finally hung up the phone, Lin Chen asked, “How is it?”

“It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. With the recent festival drawing in tourists, our forces are already limited. We need more time.”

“Actually, you don’t need to be so troublesome.” As if he had made up his mind about something, Lin Chen suddenly raised his head and said, “I can make him appear. You just need to decide the location.”

His voice was weak but terribly serious.

Much later on, Xing Conglian would reminisce about how if he could have discovered Lin Chen’s abnormality at that time, perhaps there wouldn’t be so many stories afterwards.

Unfortunately, Lin Chen didn’t give him such a chance to react.

“If you don’t believe me, let’s do an experiment. I want to eat at Tian Xing Ju at noon. Your treat,” Lin Chen whispered to Xing Conglian as he glanced at Fu Hao’s back. He then quickly walked to a small shop on the side of the road, went to the counter, and bought six planet cups for a yuan.

When Xing Conglian reached for the planet cups that Lin Chen handed over, he froze. He didn’t understand what Lin Chen wanted to do.

But then he saw Lin Chen take two quick steps to catch up to Fu Hao. He stuffed the remaining five planet cups into Fu Hao’s hands.

“Huh, shixiong?” Fu Hao looked at the small snacks in his hand in surprise.

“You’ve performed well recently, so this is a reward for you.”

Lin Chen blinked innocently. Seeing such a vivid expression on Lin Chen’s face, Fu Hao suddenly came to a realization.

“Don’t be like this, shixiong. You’re going to make me cry. I miss the old man too,” Fu Hao said as he tore open a planet cup. “How many did you buy for a yuan?”

“Six,” Lin Chen said, with a rare smile on his face. It was subtle, but under the sun, it made him look gorgeous.

Xing Conglian looked at them in a daze from behind. He couldn’t help but hook Fu Hao’s neck, leaned over, and asked, “Who is this old man? What’s with this stunt?”

“The old man is our mentor. He likes shixiong the most. Every time we write a good thesis, he would buy us planet cups as a reward, but the owner of the snack shop at our school bullies him because he’s old. Every time the old man would buy them, he would give him only five. The old man always thought he was taking advantage of the shopkeeper, but in fact, it was actually six for a yuan.” Fu Hao spoke with a smile on his face.

Lin Chen was still smiling, and the atmosphere had turned calm and relaxed. “Where do you want to go eat later?” he asked, seemingly inadvertently.

“Tian Xing Ju,” Fu Hao replied quickly.

His answer was easy, but when Xing Conglian heard this, he felt like he had been struck by lightning. He looked at Lin Chen in disbelief, poked Professor Fu’s head, and opened his mouth.

Lin Chen seemed to read his mind. He turned around and pointed to the bus stop they had just passed by. On the billboard of the station was a photo of a Chinese Restaurant. On the plaque of the restaurant were three ostentatious large characters: “Tian Xing Ju”.

“Our mentor is a loyal supporter of Tian Xing Ju. Every time we meet him, he always wants to eat there.”

“So you deliberately reminded Fu Hao of the old man just now?”

“I took the planet cups and dropped the hint to make Fu Hao remember our mentor. In addition, Fu Hao had just glanced at the advertisement for Tian Xing Ju. Subconsciously, this made him think of our mentor. When I asked him where he wanted to eat, with the advertisement for Tian Xing Ju still in place, it was the easiest thing for his mind to extract, so that was his first reaction.” Lin Chen was afraid that Xing Conglian wouldn’t understand, so he explained it to him seriously.

“You want to use this method to set a trap for Feng Peilin?” Xing Conglian express with doubt. “Would he really fall for it?”

“Trust me.”

Kinky Thoughts:

Oedipus Complex is named after Oedipus. Freud expanded this concept further by saying boys experience castration anxiety while girls experience penis envy. This theory is not supported by empirical evidence, so take it with a grain of salt as to how it applies to this novel.

Chapter 108

When Dong Zhi woke up the next day, as usual, he habitually lay in bed for a while, confirmed his position, then slowly woke up. He leaned to the side casually but touched a warm body. He couldn’t help being startled and quickly turned his head.

The spacious bed was enough for two people. He used to sleep on one side while letting the other side be empty with pillows, but now instead of pillows, there was a person lying there. The other person had a perfect appearance, but his eyes were closed, as if he were seducing others to wake him up with a kiss.

After Dong Zhi stared for a while, he looked away and turned his gaze to the ceiling, but the corners of his mouth couldn’t help but curl up quietly, the arc becoming bigger and wider.

“What are you smiling about?”

Dong Zhi didn’t know when the person next to him had woken up. Long Shen’s voice didn’t seem sleepy. Perhaps he had woken up a while ago and was just closing his eyes to refresh his mind.

“Master, can you pinch me?”

Dong Zhi was in a daze upon seeing Long Shen. He felt that this request would be too strange, so he coughed lightly. “I dreamed of the heavenly demon on the plane before, so I’m afraid everything now is an illusion woven by him…”

Naturally, Long Shen didn’t pinch him but instead responded by giving Dong Zhi a kiss. When the other party was almost out of breath, Long Shen finally eased up.

The hot and humid breath slowly rose, when suddenly Dong Zhi remembered a serious problem.

“Is the curse contagious?”

“What?” Long Shen didn’t understand.

Dong Zhi said embarrassedly, “Transmitting through kissing.”

He thought of this because he had heard that the poison the Gu witches used was actually a kind of bacteria that entered the body through direct contact between humans. If curses were homologous to gu, then they should follow the same principle.

“No.”

Long Shen didn’t know where his apprentice had gone with his rich imagination. Even if it was contagious, they had kissed so many times last night that it was too late now.

Dong Zhi blushed and took the initiative to put his arms around Long Shen’s neck. “Then kiss again?”

Long Shen saw Dong Zhi’s shyness and anxiety, so he lowered his head and gave Dong Zhi another peck on the lips.

“Getting up?”

Dong Zhi shook his head. He was staring at the blue sea and bright sky outside, in a room with a comfortable temperature, in the company of the person he loved most, and he wanted this moment to last forever.

Long Shen rarely had leisure, so he didn’t rush Dong Zhi. The two cuddled like this, quietly leaning on the bedside while enjoying the hard-won tender moments.

“Master.”

“Hmm.”

“When the Changshou Sword was stained with my blood, it took me to a fantasy realm and showed me a vision of all you have experienced. Is the Changshou Sword your clone?”

“No.” Long Shen frowned slightly. He didn’t expect such a situation from the Changshou Sword.

Dong Zhi looked at Long Shen. “Does it have a spirit inside it?”

Long Shen was silent for a moment. “Did you see the process of how I was forged in the vision?”

Dong Zhi didn’t know whether this would offend the privacy of the artifact spirit and felt a little uneasy. “I saw it, but I didn’t mean to. The time and place that the Changshou Sword showed me seemed to be random.”

“I know.” Long Shen didn’t accuse him. “Then do you remember how I was formed?”

Naturally, Dong Zhi remembered.

“From the qi of the air of the mountains, the spirit of the green wood, the ice of the sky, the dew without roots, the chalcedony of the earth, the brilliance of the stars, the essence of the sun and moon, and the blood of Ou Yezi?”

Long Shen nodded. “These eight things are fused together and eventually refined into my sword. After thousands of years, they helped me transform and take shape so that I could decompose my own essence more easily than ordinary people. When you left Beijing, I injected a ray of my soul into the Changshou Sword, which is why when you dreamt of the heavenly demon on the plane, I could sense it.”

Dong Zhi also remembered. At that time, they did take a special passage, and he took the Changshou Sword with him. When he dreamed, he held it and didn’t let go.

He was slightly shaken.

He never thought that Long Shen had liked him so early. His master took such trouble because he was afraid that he was a fledgling, didn’t have the experience, and would lose his life. That was why Long Shen sent a wisp of his soul into the sword so he could perceive Dong Zhi’s situation at any time.

In this way, the spring breeze and rain gave life*, silently nourishing him. If he hadn’t asked about it today, he would’ve never known.

*(春风化雨) Metaphor referring to good edification and education. || It’s basically saying Long Shen is a very good master because he was looking out for his disciple all this time.

But did he deserve to be treated this well by Long Shen?

“Master, can you take your soul back?”

Long Shen shook his head but didn’t explain much. He only said, “No, it doesn’t have much effect on me.”

Dong Zhi took Long Shen’s hands and clasped them.

“I think the most correct thing I have done in my life was on Changbai Mountain. Even when you said it was impossible for me to join the Special Administration Bureau, I didn’t give up.”

Long Shen smiled faintly but didn’t say it. It was precisely because Dong Zhi was unwilling to give up no matter what, and he passed the written test and interview with excellent grades, and he didn’t give up on any ordinary people during the zombie simulation, that his idea of taking on an apprentice came into being.

Perhaps since then he had put Dong Zhi in his eyes but forgotten that his eyes were connected to his heart, so his feelings could only slowly penetrate it from his eyes.

After lying around for a while this morning, Dong Zhi’s stomach finally protested, and Long Shen no longer indulged him. He called room service so Dong Zhi could continue to stay in bed.

The weather outside was lovely. The sun was shining brightly, and the surface of the sea glistened differently from the brilliance of last night. As far as the eye could see, there was a clear line between the blue and light blue, just like him and Long Shen. Originally, they were from two different worlds, but in the end, they became a common part of the sea.

Dong Zhi still felt a bit of regret. He originally wanted to take Long Shen parasailing and snorkeling, but now his body couldn’t handle any strenuous activities. If he had another angina attack while parasailing and died in midair, it would cause a lot of trouble for the owner of the company, so Dong Zhi dispelled this idea. Fortunately, Long Shen didn’t feel bored. Given his temperament, he had no problem staying in the room for the entire day.

After eating, Dong Zhi stretched his waist, sat on the sofa in front of the window, and took out the drawing board he had brought and started painting.

Long Shen took out a book and read next to him. The atmosphere was quiet for a while.

Since opening up last night, Dong Zhi wanted to kiss and hug Long Shen the moment he saw him, but he didn’t want Long Shen to think he was being too clingy, so after a few glances, he looked away and focused on painting.

“Master, do you have anything you wish to have drawn?” he asked.

Long Shen thought for a while. “Help me draw a picture of you.”

Dong Zhi was stunned.

“You only drew me last time.”

Dong Zhi smiled and said, “Okay.”

His pen moved quickly on the tablet, scribbling and changing. An outline soon appeared on the screen. The lines were slowly corrected from the draft, and then color was added. The sun slipped from overhead to the other side of the sea as an afternoon was spent in the aroma of coffee and tea.

Long Shen raised his eyes and saw that the drawing had been almost completed, just short of its finishing touches.

The picture Dong Zhi drew wasn’t complicated. It was still in a dark environment. Long Shen, Dong Zhi, Liu Qingbo, and Huo Jie were walking forward in pairs. Long Shen recognized that this was when they were in the cave underwater, but he could see that his own image was finer and more attentive in the painting. Dong Zhi even remembered the details of his clothes at the time. When he compared that to the image of Dong Zhi, he found that Dong Zhi’s was much rougher.

Long Shen said, “You can draw yourself finer.”

Dong Zhi smiled. “I think it’s good.”

“When you finish coloring, send it to my email.”

Dong Zhi agreed and continued to color his drawing. Suddenly, Long Shen’s phone rang. He answered in the room without avoiding Dong Zhi.

After a while, he hung up the phone and said to Dong Zhi, “It’s a call from the Northwest Branch. Boss Che is out of seclusion and will be free in two days. We’ll go to Xi’an the day after tomorrow.”

Dong Zhi had heard about all the branches in the Special Administration Bureau, but only in the literal sense.

It was said that the director of the Northwest Branch was Che Bai. After they came out of the underground in Yinchuan last time, the aftermath was handed over to the Northwest Branch. Long Shen and Song Zhicun were relieved and immediately took a flight back. There was no need for them to stay in the local area to continue supervision, which showed that they had great trust in Director Che.

Seeing as how Long Shen hadn’t found a way to resolve the curse on Dong Zhi and thought about asking the head of a branch for help instead of going back to Beijing to find Zong Ling, Zhang Xiankun, or the other big consultants, this wasn’t due to personal feelings but because Long Shen thought Director Che was more capable.

After staying in the Special Administration Bureau for so long, Dong Zhi gradually understood a rule. He would not be able to rise if he wasn’t capable enough. Some were purely for personal reasons, such as Long Shen. With his qualifications and abilities, he could have sat in a much higher position. Some people aspired for promotions as officials to make fortunes, while others liked to take action. Long Shen was obviously the latter, as he preferred to do things himself rather than watch others do it. Seeing the world achieve peace by his own hands would make him happier than getting any high-ranking position.

It seemed that this Director Che Bai was such a person.

“Master, is Boss Che very powerful?”

Long Shen said, “He doesn’t have a teacher lineage, but he is also a spirit that cultivated its form.”

Although he had expected this, Dong Zhi couldn’t help but be surprised. He now knew that most artifact spirits’ names hinted at what their true form was. For example, Long Shen was transformed from the Long Yuan sword. Tang Jing was a homonym for a mirror of the Tang Dynasty*. Ming Xian, if carefully thought about, was indeed related to the zither. So what would be the original form of Director Che Bai?

*Clarity: Tang Jing uses the Jing from clean (净) which is a homonym for mirror (镜).

He couldn’t help but come up with some guesses and then said, “Is Boss Che transformed from a carriage* of some form?”

*Che Bai (车白) means white car/vehicle, which is why Dong Zhi guessed this.

Even for a serious person like Long Shen, he couldn’t help but find this amusing.

“Why didn’t you guess if he’s a white deer or a white fox?”

Well, that would also make sense. Dong Zhi wrinkled his brows. “Then why is his surname Che? Was it randomly chosen?”

Long Shen: “Most names are accidental. Some people associate their origin with their names just to express a kind of gratitude or commemoration.”

Dong Zhi nodded. He knew that in Long Shen’s heart, he must feel deeply for Ou Yezi.

“Master, do you know where Ou Yezi has a shrine or tombstone that we can pay homage to? I want to worship him and visit his shrine every year in the future.”

Long Shen smiled and held Dong Zhi’s hand.

He had never experienced this kind of feeling; the feeling of someone knowing his own heart so easily. Although it felt unfamiliar, his heart was beating with a slight joy that he couldn’t ignore.

So this was love.

“No need. Everything becomes empty when you die. You only need the intentions in your heart. The form isn’t important.”

The topic returned to Che Bai. Long Shen said, “The name of Boss Che is indeed related to his origin, but it’s removed from his surname. If you take the left radical of Xuanyuan, you get Che, and taking the right from cypress you get Bai*.”

*Clarity: [Xuanyuan] (轩辕) Both characters use the radical [Che] (车) for their left radical. Cypress [柏] uses the radical [Bai] (白) as its right radical.

The speed at which Dong Zhi blinked his eyes sped up. Even if he saw the three-headed giant python or the Wuzhiqi at this moment, they wouldn’t shock him, because he had just learned that the director of the Northwest Branch turned out to be the Xuanyuan Cypress* planted by the Yellow Emperor himself.

*Refers to the cypress in the Xuanyuan Temple of Huangling. Supposedly, it was planted by Emperor Xuanyuan (Yellow Emperor) himself.

In other words, Dong Zhi was about to meet the ancestor of his own nation, the living Xuanyuan Cypress?

He had long known that the Special Administration Bureau had crouching tigers and hidden dragons, but when he heard Che Bai’s original form with his own ears, it took several seconds to digest it.

“I have seen testimonials that the Xuanyuan Cypress was actually planted in the Han Dynasty?”

Long Shen shook his head. “During the Spring and Autumn, Ou Yezi and I traveled all over the world. At that time, we already had a meeting with Boss Che.”

Dong Zhi was fascinated. Thinking about the era when heroes gathered and hundreds of families were fighting, he hated that he wasn’t born thousands of years earlier, even if Long Shen was still a sword at that time.

Long Shen said, “The reason why curse techniques are regarded as witchcraft is precisely because they’re related to the person who casts them. Even Boss Che may not be able to completely resolve it. I just hope you won’t be disappointed when the time comes.”

Dong Zhi smiled. “No.”

He never dreamed that his feelings would be accepted by Long Shen. Now that even this wish had been fulfilled, Dong Zhi suddenly discovered that life and death weren’t actually so important to him anymore.

Long Shen seemed to see through his thoughts, and his expression slightly softened. “Also, because of the need to hide his identity at work, Boss Che was once married, but his wife died prematurely due to illness. Although you and I are confirmed, it is best not to behave too much in front of him, so as not to arouse his sadness.”

Dong Zhi found this unexpected. “Artifact spirits could also get sick?”

His thinking was simple. Since Boss Che was an artifact spirit, then the person with him would naturally be one as well.

However, Long Shen said, “His wife was an ordinary person.”

From these few words, Dong Zhi could make up a thrilling and touching story, but what surprised him even more was an artifact spirit getting married. In his opinion, most of them were clear-headed, like his master, with the exception of Tang Jing.

Seeing that he wanted to say something but held himself back, Long Shen asked, “What did you want to say?”

Dong Zhi couldn’t restrain his curiosity. “Aren’t all spirits single-mindedly focused on cultivation?”

Long Shen was surprised by this question. “Since artifact spirits can take form, naturally they have also gained the seven emotions and six desires, which make them no different from ordinary people. They just have a longer lifespan and can’t have children.”

After a pause, Long Shen continued, “You’re not in good health now, so you can’t do too much intense exercise or there’s a risk it could trigger an attack. If you want, we can talk about it after the curse is lifted.”

Although Long Shen had a mild temperament, he was more magnanimous than anyone else. He was never keen on the human behavior of holding back one’s appetite and refusing to eat.

Dong Zhi’s heart collapsed. He wanted to say he didn’t want it, or didn’t need it, but such a reply would seem strange and would look as if he was trying to cover things up. His fair complexion suddenly turned red at a speed visible to the naked eye. He looked at Long Shen, trying to defend himself, but he felt it was a bit ridiculous, so he could only endure.

Apparently, the degree of spiritual communication between them wasn’t enough. Long Shen misunderstood his reaction and suddenly laughed, “In fact, if you want, we don’t have to have physical contact.”

Before Dong Zhi understood what the other party meant by this, he saw Long Shen reach out and point his finger at his brow.

A stream of heat immediately swirled in front of Dong Zhi’s brows.

“Close your eyes,” Long Shen said.

Dong Zhi didn’t know what was going on but still obediently obeyed.

Around his body was darkness, but suddenly there was a flash of light.

Dong Zhi found himself in an empty world that seemed to be between the ethereal universe. A breeze was rippling everywhere, but it was as warm as spring. However, it was hazy, like looking at flowers in the fog. He only felt a laziness emerge from his bones. When he woke up, he couldn’t help but want to stretch, but he couldn’t move. He was standing on a lone flower branch, and each step he took made it shake.

He had become a flower.

A bud on a branch that was waiting to bloom.

This thought rose vaguely in his heart. His soul was separated from his body. He clearly saw that he was drenched by the torrential rain, and he felt wet all over, but the rain wasn’t cold; it felt warm like a hot spring. The flower became more lazy as it was gently caressed by fingers, slowly stretching out into the sun and breeze. It swayed gently as the buds flapped out, petal by petal, in the wind.

The sun shone on him, drying out the raindrops, but he still retained their moisture. It was warm and fragrant, and he felt drunk but without the wine.

His soul was independent of the flower, yet he could clearly feel the texture and everything the flower felt. In a flash, between the heavens and earth, all things loved; as the mountains and rivers embraced, there was only him.

When Dong Zhi opened his eyes, he found himself lying on the bed, but his complexion was flushed and his chest fluctuated violently, as if he had just experienced an indescribable and wonderful journey. He felt extremely tired, like he had run 8 kilometers, and his body was in a delicate state of lethargy.

He gasped, “This is…”

“Divine intercourse,” Long Shen said.

There was no physical contact in this intercourse, but a mingling of the consciousness. It could achieve a more intense spiritual pleasure than the body. Dong Zhi had seen this in novels before. At that time, he thought it was just the novelist’s fabrication, and he didn’t expect one day he would be able to experience this firsthand.

It may not be possible to describe this feeling. If he had to use a word, all Dong Zhi could think of was: ecstasy.

He looked at the ceiling in a daze. He didn’t even have the energy to look at Long Shen. The sweat from his forehead was wiped off by Long Shen, but following it in his heart was a dense feeling of shame. His face flushed red, and he couldn’t wait to bury his entire being under the blankets.

Long Shen looked at Dong Zhi’s fluffy head, which was exposed outside the blanket. “Although the pleasure of divine intercourse is stronger than physical contact, it does consume qi, so it can’t be done often. If you want, we can do it at most once a week.”

“I’m not a stallion that thinks with his dick*!”

*Sperm head (精虫) It’s used to describe impulsive and reckless behavior due to male hormones (sexual impulse).

Dong Zhi could no longer hold back. He emerged from the blanket and issued a strong protest. His face was flushed, unknown whether it was because he was angry or embarrassed, or because he smothered himself inside the blanket for too long.

When he saw Long Shen’s meaningful eyes, he knew that the other party was teasing him. For the first time, Dong Zhi realized that his master also had a sense of humor.

……

The good times always passed in a flash. The situation they were about to face was unknown and treacherous.

Two days later, they checked out of their hotel and flew directly to the historic ancient city in the northwest.

The Northwest Branch was perhaps the most formal office space among all the branches and offices Dong Zhi had seen. It was located in a small building next to a research institute in the city. The same signboard was hung outside the research institute. Only when they entered the small building did they see a small plaque on the wall that read: [Northwest Branch of the Special Administration Bureau of the People’s Republic of China].

Director Che of the branch was different from the gray-haired old man Dong Zhi imagined. The other party looked to be about 40 to 50 years old. His hair was combed back, and he was wearing a Chinese-styled suit paired with gold-rimmed glasses. He looked more like a university professor than a practitioner.

Facing the director of the branch, whose age was comparable to that of this nation’s civilization, Dong Zhi didn’t dare be neglectful and followed Long Shen to respectfully salute him.

Che Bai was amiable and smiled before he said anything. There were fine lines on the corners of his eyes. He had learned the story from Long Shen a while ago, and he didn’t delay much time with small talk. He directly asked how Dong Zhi was feeling.

Dong Zhi replied, “I just vomited blood yesterday, but I haven’t had any attacks today. I feel okay, but I’m easily tired, and my hands and feet often get weak.”

Che Bai took his pulse, pondered for a moment, and frowned slightly.

“This isn’t just a simple curse. I’m afraid that the demon has also placed certain restrictions through this curse, so it’s difficult to solve.”

This was the first time Dong Zhi had heard this, but Long Shen’s expression wasn’t surprised. It was obvious he knew about this already.

“Yes, that’s why I can only ask for Che Lao’s help.”

Che Bai sighed. “If this was ten years ago, I would still have some certainty, but now that my lifespan is approaching, I’m afraid I might not have the strength. I will try first.”

Long Shen showed an astonished expression. “We can think of another way.”

Che Bai smiled and said, “It’s okay. One’s life is determined by God, and there’s nothing humans can do. It has nothing to do with helping you or not. Come, Dong Zhi, sit down. Close your eyes and relax as you usually do with your breathing exercise.”

Dong Zhi closed his eyes and sat crossed-legged on the sofa as he practiced his kung-fu tona as usual. He quickly forgot about Long Shen and Che Bai beside him.

At this time, Che Bai took out a small bottle, opened the cork, and placed it under Dong Zhi’s nose. The mouth of the bottle faintly curled up with light smoke and quickly slipped into Dong Zhi’s nasal cavity.

There was a subtle change in his expression.

“Open your eyes,” he heard Che Bai say.

Dong Zhi slowly opened his eyes, and in front of him was a dense jungle that almost covered the sky. The sun was fierce above his head, but the soil exuded a humid smell. Most likely, it rained not long ago. The plants had such unique characteristics that Dong Zhi thought they were in the tropics as soon as he saw them.

“Go on.”

Che Bai’s voice sounded, but when Dong Zhi looked around, he didn’t see anyone. He calmed down and started to move.

He realized that he wasn’t an entity at this moment, but more like a ghost passing through time and space. As he moved forward, the plants, branches, and leaves continued to rustle under the sun, providing shade for the soil.

The author has something to say:

A unique kind of car*…

*Euphemism for sex.

Kinky Thoughts:

This is probably intentional by the author as the chapter that they have “sex” in also introduces a character named Che… which means car and is a euphemism for sex… If that’s the case, the author’s note would be a triple entendre.

Well that’s a first. I’ve never read about divine intercourse before, but I still prefer reading about physical intercourse. I mean, Long Shen looks like this (in the manhua)… How can you not want to get banged by that Dong Zhi?!

Chapter 15

The rain outside was getting stronger. The wind blew the branches and leaves, battering them up against the window, creating desperately knocking sounds. Zhang Xiaolong stopped at the right moment.

Dozens of eyes in the room converged on Lin Chen again.

Those eyes were filled with doubts and consternation, as if questioning why Lin Chen could easily speculate on the relationship between Yu Yanqing and Feng Peilin, making it look as if he was the actual suspect, which only added more awkwardness to the air.

Lin Chen closed his eyes lightly, unmoved.

Fu Hao became angry. He gritted his teeth and tried to speak up but was held back by Xing Conglian.

“It looks like I have to invite Mr. Feng over for a cup of tea, don’t you think so, political commissar?” Xing Conglian scratched his beard and tried to pull everyone’s attention away from Lin Chen.

The political commissar’s face was flushed, but he still pretended to be calm. After a moment of contemplation, he replied, “Yes, Lao Xing.”

Xing Conglian stood up, creating a grating sound with his chair. He subconsciously looked towards Lin Chen’s direction and wanted to take him with him, but Lin Chen still had his eyes closed.

Huang Ze had put away his notebook. He raised his cold face at a slight angle and said, “Captain Xing, it doesn’t seem good to let unrelated people participate in solving the case.”

“Mr. Lin has played a key role in the investigation of this case. How can he be considered unrelated?”

After listening to Xing Conglian’s response, Huang Ze flipped through his notebook, as if to find some records, then raised his head and asked, “It seems that Professor Fu is the psychology specialist for the police force here, no?”

Xing Conglian was speechless for a moment. He wanted to argue back but saw Lin Chen open his eyes slightly, looked at him, and shook his head.

Fu Hao hurriedly grabbed Xing Conglian and said, “Go, go Lao Xing. We need to arrest someone!”

……

The camphor on the side of the road was blown wildly by the wind as a jeep sped by. Fu Hao was silent. The only sound inside was Xing Conglian stepping on the gas, which made the atmosphere of the car gloomy and anxious.

When they stopped at a red light, Xing Conglian turned his head and said coldly, “Why don’t you explain?”

“Explain what?” Fu Hao said.

“Lin Chen is your shixiong, an expert among experts. Why didn’t you speak up?”

“That’s Huang Ze. If my shixiong doesn’t want to speak up, I can’t force it!” Xing Conglian’s attitude was so rough that it made Fu Hao a little angry, so he shouted his response back.

“What about Huang Ze? Too scared to speak up because he’s there?”

“Huang Ze is shixiong’s—!”

Fu Hao was about to blurt it out, but when he saw the look on Xing Conglian’s face, he suddenly realized that Xing Conglian was fishing for information. “Lao Xing, you old dog!”

Fu Hao bared his teeth in anger.

“Come on, tell me. What happened between Huang Ze and Lin Chen. And what’s going on with that person surnamed Chen…” Xing Conglian clicked his tongue as he locked the car. “If you don’t make it clear now, don’t think about getting out.”

When men gossiped, it was indeed more troublesome than women, because they were extremely persistent and had the means.

Fu Hao looked at the traffic light that had changed to green and felt the tense atmosphere he created just now was gone.

“Lao Xing, why are you so persistent…” Fu Hao said helplessly. His tone returned to calmness. “Even if you live a bit out of touch with the world, you must know that powerful families still exist in the world, and they are very rich. If you have money, that means you have power. It’s difficult for ordinary people to touch these people, but once you come into contact, you must be careful. This isn’t some kind of novel, but a more bizarre reality than fiction.”

“What do you mean?”

“From north to south, the aristocratic families, Zhou, Wu, Chen, and Huang.” Fu Hao’s eyes looked straight ahead as he spoke softly.

The sound of rain outside the car was loud, matching the noise made from the car’s engine. Fu Hao didn’t speak, and neither did Xing Conglian.

After a long time, the unshaven man parked his car on the side of the road and pulled on the handbrake. “Okay, then what?”

His tone was casual, so light, it was as if he didn’t care.

Fu Hao was speechless. He thought his words would give enough caution, but Xing Conglian didn’t even seem to take it to heart.

“Can you be serious here? These four families are involved in many industries and are extremely rich, okay?”

“So they have money, but they’re not spending it on me. What does that have to do with anything?”

“Then, why does it concern you?”

“Zhou, Wu… that Huang guy, how the hell did Lin Chen offend them? This has something to do with me.”

Fu Hao thought, ‘That’s my shixiong’s business and has nothing to do with you.’

“Can’t say.” He responded after thinking for a bit and shaking his head.

“Why?”

The school gate of the city’s Experimental Primary School was close at hand. Strong winds had blown branches all over the ground, creating a bleak scene in front of them.

Looking at such a scene could make anyone’s mood depressed.

“Because it can’t be said. Someone has issued a gag order.”

“How boring.”

Xing Conglian took out a cigarette and put it in his mouth. He prepared to open the door to get out of the car.

As soon as he took one step out, he heard the person behind him ask, “Lao Xing, do you think humans are all created equal and that everyone’s life is worth the same?”

“Isn’t it?”

“Then is a thief’s life compared to a child’s life, or your life compared to Feng Peilin’s life, both worth the same?”

In this world, there were many questions that were difficult to answer and could leave many people speechless.

At the police station, in the room, there were only two people left.

The female police officer who originally wanted to stay and tidy up was driven out of the room by the parachuted inspector before she could even move a chair.

Lin Chen felt someone handing him a glass of water that had just the right temperature—about 40 degrees.

The only person who could maintain an accurate temperature of the water they drank was Huang Ze.

Knowing that it was Huang Ze, he retracted his fingers from the paper cup, causing just the warm water to spill on the ground, splashing everywhere. Some even got on Huang Ze’s trousers.

Following the spilled water, Huang Ze laughed. “You’re sick.”

Lin Chen felt a little dizzy. There was a tinge of burning on his face before a cold hand was pressed to his forehead. That was followed by a smiling voice. “High fever. 39.5 degrees.”

His smile was ambiguous, and his movements were intimate. He was different from the cold-faced inspector just now as his face had softened, leaving only the pair of slender phoenix eyes that still looked sharp and so cold that they could freeze water.

“Huang Ze, it’s tiring for you to be like this.” Lin Chen didn’t push away Huang Ze’s hand. It would look too pretentious, so instead he turned his head slightly and closed his eyes.

Huang Ze squatted down in front of him, put his hands around the armchairs, and almost encircled Lin Chen. He then asked, “How have you been these past three years?”

“If I had a good life, you would’ve picked me up by now and wouldn’t look so relieved, no?”

“I feel sorry for you,” Huang Ze said as he leaned forward again. The distance between them was so close that Lin Chen could feel the other’s cold breath.

Inside the car, in front of the school.

The wind seemed to carry the salty scent of the ocean. Fu Hao slowly took in a deep breath then spoke to Xing Conglian. “Let’s take an example. Suppose there are 20 children who, for some reason, were left to play alone on the railroad tracks. Among them, 4 of them are children of rich families. They are smart and elites of the industry. They advised other children that although it seems abandoned here, there may be trains passing by on the railroad tracks where they were, so they should go to another track that was abandoned as it’s much safer there. However, the remaining 16 children, for some reason, didn’t listen to this advice. So, the 4 smart kids walked alone to the abandoned tracks. As a result, a train came. If at this time you have the opportunity to stand by the switcher of the tracks, you can choose to let the train turn to the abandoned tracks and sacrifice 4 children in order to save more, or, if you don’t, more children will die.” Fu Hao looked at Xing Conglian’s back and smiled with difficulty. “Well, if you encountered such a thing, what would you do?*”

*See Kinky Thoughts.

Xing Conglian’s hair was wet from the rain. The half of his body that was sticking out of the car door was also soaked. He maintained this posture, frozen like a stone sculpture, as if he was lost in thought.

Finally, he took out his lighter and flicked it, but it didn’t light.

“I can’t answer this question.” With a fwip, the flames finally lit. He put the lighter close to his cigarette and held it there for a long time before it finally lit. He took a puff and exhaled, then said, “But I definitely admire someone who could make such a choice.”

While waiting for a response, Huang Ze looked at Lin Chen’s chapped lips. He thought if Lin Chen responded to him, he would get him another glass of water and force him to drink it.

“Not all questions in the world have answers.” Lin Chen stared into his eyes as his tone softened. “Not all answers can be distinguished between right and wrong.”

Huang Ze stood up abruptly. If he wasn’t still at the police station that was being so closely monitored, he would have grabbed Lin Chen by the neck by now.

Xing Conglian was smart. Of course, he knew the story that Fu Hao told wasn’t purely hypothetical. It was very likely that something similar to this had happened.

And because it was real, it was very heavy.

Any questions that tortured human nature were, by definition, heavy.

……

Because of the suspension of classes, there weren’t any students at the schools and few faculty members.

The class bell rang as usual as Xing Conglian extinguished his cigarette and followed school security to Feng Peilin’s office.

The big office was empty. Xing Conglian glanced over and, based on the desks full of textbooks and teaching aids, he recognized which desk belonged to Feng Peilin’s from a glance.

This was due to the fact that, of all the desks, there was only one that was very clean, with nothing on it but a book.

Xing Conglian put on his gloves, walked to the window, and picked up the book.

He opened the cover and saw a sentence written on the title page:

[A man who has not passed through the inferno of his passions has never overcome them. – Jung*]

*Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Jung’s work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies.

The font was beautiful. Each stroke was delicate, as if the person who was writing it was serious, but Xing Conglian could sense the ridicule from this seriousness.

Even without Lin Chen, he could imagine the posture of the writer sitting by the window, with the corner of his mouth slightly raised, while he wrote down this line.

Xing Conglian was expressionless as he turned the pages of the book. At this moment, a letter suddenly fell out.

The envelope was white, clean, and immaculate. It wasn’t sealed. Xing Conglian turned the envelope upside down and gently shook it, causing a handful of delicate white sand to sprinkle out. Other than that, there was nothing.

If the words written on the title page were a mockery, the content inside this envelop was a naked provocation.

The security guard brought a female teacher who wore her hair in a ponytail to Xing Conglian’s side and said, “Captain Xing, this is Teacher Xu, who works in the same office as Teacher Feng.”

“Oh, good.” Xing Conglian handed the book and envelope to Fu Hao and sat down with the female teacher.

“I would like to ask you a few questions about Teacher Feng.”

The female teacher frowned and pursed her lips tightly. She was nervous.

“How does Teacher Feng treat his students?”

“He’s very good to his students. The Chinese teacher is very personable and elegant, so the students like him.”

“What is Mr. Feng’s family situation? Do you know it?”

“Mr. Feng isn’t married, and because of this, he’s quite popular with the female students.”

“In regards to Mr. Feng’s words and actions, has there been anything about him that makes you think it’s a little off?” Xing Conglian asked.

“To say something is off…” The female teacher wrinkled her brows together, as if trying to remember something. “Teacher Feng would every day call his mother at a fixed time. Sometimes when he’s in class, when that time comes, he would run to the corridor and call her.”

The son was about 35–40 years old. The mother was about 65 years old and was extremely strict with her son.

Xing Conglian suddenly remembered Lin Chen’s inference and couldn’t help but look at Fu Hao.

“What else?” he continued to ask.

“And…” The teacher rubbed her nose before continuing, “Teacher Feng sometimes doesn’t pay much attention to people. He likes to sit by the window, alone, and in a daze.”

“Like this?”

Xing Conglian moved the chair to the side, sat down on Feng Peilin’s desk, and looked out the window.

Then, he froze.

Seeing Xing Conglian petrified in front of the window, not saying anything for a long time, Fu Hao couldn’t help but nudge him. “What’s the matter, Lao Xing?”

“Feng Peilin is looking at Lin Chen…”

Xing Conglian pulled Fu Hao to a position that aligned with his own line of sight as he spoke.

Kinky Thoughts:

What Fu Hao was talking about is similar to the trolley problem. It is an ethical dilemma where you’re presented with a problem of whether to sacrifice one person to save a larger number.

There is a runaway trolley barreling down the tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person on the side track. You have two (and only two) options:

  1. Do nothing, in which case the trolley will kill the five people on the main track.
  2. Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the side track where it will kill one person.

Which is the more ethical option? Or, more simply: What is the right thing to do?

My train of thoughts went two ways here… Either Huang Ze is Lin Chen’s old flame, or based on the story Fu Hao told, Lin Chen probably made some kind of decision that inadvertently killed the kids of the four elite families, thus causing Huang Ze to bear a terrible grudge against him… Or both actually.

Also, does Feng Peilin also have a thing for Lin Chen? It would be funny if all these cases revolved around people having the hots for him.

Chapter 14

With a hospital bed number, their goal was much easier to find.

Lin Chen was sitting by the hospital bed. On it lay an old man wearing an oxygen mask. He looked extremely weak and seemed to be running out of time.

Fu Hao squatted behind Lin Chen and whispered, “Shixiong, how did you know what kind of man Yu Yanqing met at the hospital?”

“It’s simple. In addition to relatives and friends, those who can change a person are the ones that they’re in love with. As we know, love can make people do crazy things.”

When Xing Conglian stepped into the room, he happened to hear this.

He quickly stepped towards the bedside and asked, “Where did this man come from?”

“Shixiong seemed to have found a suspicious person. Yu Yanqing might have a boyfriend in the hospital.”

Hearing Fu Hao’s cautious statement, Xing Conglian frowned. “But in Yu Yanqing’s profile, it didn’t show she had a boyfriend in the past.”

Xing Conglian was rarely anxious. After all, there was information missing in the investigation, and this was an important clue that could lead to solving the case. This was truly inept on their part.

“Their relationship seems to be secretive. I had to use a special method to inquire about it,” Lin Chen said calmly, as if to comfort Xing Conglian.

“Then we are now?”

“Waiting for someone.”

As if in response to Lin Chen’s words, an extremely vigilant female voice came from the door of the ward. “Are you family members of the patient? I haven’t seen you before.”

A small nurse was standing there holding a white tray.

Xing Conglian took out his credential and flashed his golden badge, which only made the little nurse’s expression more nervous.

He gently invited the nurse to the bedside.

Lin Chen looked up and asked, “Has something happened to this hospital bed recently?”

The nurse’s face flushed. She hurriedly took a step back and tried to leave, but Xing Conglian blocked the doorway.

“Will this hospital not let you speak about it?” Lin Chen put his hand on top of the old man’s hand and turned around. “We have our way of finding out in the end, but we hope that with your help, we can shorten the investigation time.”

Lin Chen spoke sincerely, and because of that, the nurse found it hard to refuse.

The little nurse stammered for a while, her face turning red, before she could speak coherently. “The previous patient on this bed… jumped to their death on August 10th.”

“What was the patient’s name?”

“Feng Xuejuan.”

Xing Conglian quickly took out his phone and called the technician.

……

The chief of security at the hospital quickly arrived. When he heard that the police were going to seize the video of Feng Xuejuan jumping off the building on August 10th, his face instantly turned grim.

Originally, because of the corpses in the morgue, the outpatient volume of the city’s hospital had shrunk considerably. If a serial killer was involved with the hospital, this could ruin their reputation.

However, Xing Conglian was unrelenting, and, in the end, the security chief had to take them to the surveillance room.

The hospital security personnel were still retrieving the video. A young technician sat in a swivel chair, raised the brim of his cap, and quickly slid over to push people away.

He glanced at the file format, quickly searched for the file, finding the right time, and pulled up the scene that captured Feng Xuejuan jumping off the building.

A thin woman in a hospital gown leapt out the window and could be seen falling down like a kite that broke off from its string.

However, because of the reflection, the window of the ward was so white that it was impossible to see specifically inside the room.

Fu Hao could only lament regretfully.

Xing Conglian clicked his tongue as he walked to the window and looked out.

The hospital had installed perfect surveillance that covered almost all public spaces. He looked around, and his gaze finally fell on a camera mounted on the courtyard wall.

“What number is that camera?”

He stretched out his hand and pointed to the rotating camera on the wall.

The security chief glanced at the direction of Xing Conglian’s finger, moved his fat body, and ran to the filing cabinet to look through some documents.

Wang Chao raised his eyes, looked at the monitor, and quickly searched for the number.

His fingers tapped the keyboard furiously. Then the screen went dark and quickly lit up again with an unexpected scene greeting them.

The black and white pixels squeezed together. On the screen, the dead old man of Chunshui Street was sitting on a bench basking in the sun.

“It’s him!” Fu Hao’s hand clicked on a young man who had his back to the camera.

Wang Chao hurriedly pulled up the surveillance on the other side and slowed the video down. Eventually, the face of the young man standing on the pavement became clear. It was the young man who died in the park!

Ten seconds later, Yu Yanqing also appeared on the screen. She stood under a tree not far away from Feng Xuejuan’s body, which was still lying in a pool of blood, and was still twitching slightly.

Silence filled the surveillance room.

Everyone could only feel chills take over their bodies, as if they had been pushed into a walk-in cooler.

Suddenly, a burst of piano music sounded from indoors. The music was so chaotic that it made everyone tremble, bringing them back to their senses.

Xing Conglian connected the call. On the other end of the line, the director’s voice was curt.

“Someone’s coming. Get back!”

Xing Conglian knew the old director too well.

While the old man was abrasive and chattered a lot, there were few things that really made him anxious. Recently, the only thing that could give this old man a headache was the young man sitting in front of the monitor.

He glanced at Lin Chen, subconsciously seeing Lin Chen look back at him, as if he knew exactly what was said on the phone.

……

Outside the police station, someone was waiting.

The man wasn’t waiting in the warm office but under the wet eaves. The rain wetted his epaulets, causing the three-silver star on them to shine brighter.

Lin Chen was sitting in the car when he saw this person in the distance. He unbuckled his seatbelt, but his hand was stopped by Xing Conglian.

He knew that Xing Conglian was worried about him and was grateful for his concern.

“It’s an acquaintance. Don’t worry,” he reassured. Then he resolutely removed Xing Conglian’s hand.

Lin Chen opened the car door and got out without an umbrella and soon reached the eaves of the police station. He hadn’t seen the man standing opposite him in three years. He seemed to have lost a lot of weight, giving him a sharper temperament, like a sword that was about to be unsheathed; the blade, cold and impersonal.

Lin Chen gave him a rare smile, leaned over and bowed. “Inspector Huang. I haven’t seen you for a long time. How are you?”

“I heard that you’re being restless again, so I came to take a look.”

Those same words, coming from anyone’s mouth, would hold the same meaning, cold.

Lin Chen didn’t intend to just take it. He raised his head and looked at the man in front of him. “Huang Ze, you’re too idle.”

Xing Conglian was approaching with his jingling car keys in hand just in time to hear Lin Chen’s response.

How many people had jumped out to find trouble in just three days since they started investigating this case together? Yet Lin Chen’s response to them was more interesting than ever.

He couldn’t help but grin, resisting the urge to laugh out loud. The man in front of Lin Chen had silver stars shining on his shoulders, indicating he was at least two and a half ranks higher than him.

They belonged to the same system, so of course he knew who Inspector Huang Ze was. Rumors naming him the Star of the Police Force and the Messenger of Justice had been used constantly by reporters. Huang Ze also came from a deep family background. Because of that, there was no need for him to accept bribes, so he was honest and upright. He was also mysterious and unpredictable*. The main point, though, was that he was extremely good-looking, and his speed of promotion was something no one could match.

*(神鬼莫测) Idiom describing someone extremely mysterious that even ghosts and gods couldn’t measure. Comes from Three Kingdoms.

Xing Conglian walked up to Huang Ze and saluted. Before he could speak, he saw the other party return a salute and said, “You’re Captain Xing? I’ve been ordered to come and supervise your handling of this case.”

As it turned out, they were targeted by Inspector Huang. No wonder why the old director was so anxious.

However, Huang Ze’s tone was respectful and his demeanor so modest that no one could find any fault with it; though his words actually meant, “I’m here to keep an eye on you, so you best behave”, coming out of Huang Ze’s mouth, it was flawless.

“We have just found an important clue. Inspector Huang, if it’s not too much trouble, could you please give us some advice?” Xing Conglian asked with a smile.

While Xing Conglian was polite, Huang Ze wasn’t. He didn’t even bother to pay attention to him and instead turned around and took the lead in walking into the police station, leaving Lin Chen and Xing Conglian to follow behind.

The policewoman, Zhang Xiaolong, was nervously placing teacups in the office that was filled with a group of top police officers who were gathered around a desk. She was carrying the teapot in her left hand, hurriedly pouring boiling water into it.

When she heard someone walk in, she turned around so quickly she almost burnt herself.

“Xiaolong, be careful.” Xing Conglian laughed.

Lin Chen didn’t speak. He found a chair in a corner and sat down. Surprisingly, Huang Ze ignored the seat that was obviously vacated for him, and instead sat beside Lin Chen. He took out a palm-sized leather notebook and tapped on his ballpoint pen twice, indicating that he was just here to listen.

Xing Conglian stood at the table and glanced at the two of them, feeling the atmosphere getting weird.

He clicked his tongue as Fu Hao and Wang Chao came in. When he walked into the office, Professor Fu couldn’t help but rub his eyes when he saw the person sitting next to Lin Chen. He stared so fiercely that his eyes almost popped out.

He winked his eyes at Lin Chen desperately, which made Lin Chen close his eyes as if he didn’t notice anything.

Because of the arrival of several people, the originally noisy office suddenly became quiet.

Lin Chen leaned back on the chair and watched as people took their seats one by one. The sound of chairs being pulled out filled the room.

Xing Conglian was the last to pull out his chair and sit down. The political commissar* cleared his throat and said, “There has been a breakthrough in our investigation of the September 10th murder case. Captain Xing will go over it in more detail.” His tone was professional. It was clear this was aimed at the newly arrived inspector.

*They are supervisory officers responsible for political education (ideology) and organizing of the unit to which they are assigned, with the intention of ensuring political control of the military. In China, the political commissar is largely responsible for administrative tasks such as public relations and counseling, and mainly serves as second-in-command.

“According to Mr. Lin’s analysis, we have a suspect traced to Feng Xuejuan’s son being involved in this case…”

Before Xing Conglian could finish, the political commissar interrupted, “Lao Xing, like I said so many times, you’re being too arbitrary. We’re looking for evidence when handling this case!” The police commissar slapped the table lightly and started to criticize. “Just because Feng Peilin’s mother, Feng Xuejuan, committed suicide, do you think Feng Peilin is a murderer? What about Yu Yanqing? From the physical evidence we collected, she is the prime suspect for committing all these crimes. You can’t judge a case because of unrelated people’s speculations.”

As if pushed by someone, Lin Chen reluctantly opened his eyes and found that everyone gathered around the table, besides the secretary who was recording the meeting in her notebook, were all looking at him while holding stacks of documents in their hands.

The air conditioner buzzed, bringing out cool air that lowered the temperature of the office.

Lin Chen raised his eyes slightly. He didn’t get angry because of the police commissar’s biting words. After all, he knew better than anyone else that all inferences based on psychoanalysis couldn’t be used as tangible evidence.

“We need an expert.” The political commissar knocked on the table. “But not everyone can be called an expert.”

This was a heavy statement. Xing Conglian wanted to refute, but Lin Chen was quicker to speak up, “What do you need?”

“Can you prove that Yu Yanqing knew Feng Peilin?” Among the silence, Huang Ze suddenly spoke up.

“You two are lovers, right?”

Lin Chen didn’t look at Huang Ze but instead stared inexplicably at the political commissar as he retorted.

“What did you say?”

“You and that girl—you’re very close, right? Although no one in the office knows, you often would secretly go on dates after work.” Lin Chen pointed to the female secretary who was recording the meeting.

Whispers erupted from the office. The female secretary buried her head while the face of the political commissar darkened, showing an embarrassed look.

“Find a shot of Yu Yanqing and Feng Peilin appearing in it at the same time.” Lin Chen spoke calmly. He turned his head to the young technician who was operating the laptop as his elbow involuntarily propped up on the armrest to support his head.

Wang Chao smiled and hurriedly pulled up a shot. After pressing enter, he turned the laptop around and showed it to the crowd.

On the screen, Yu Yanqing was holding a mop and was bent over as she passed by Feng Peilin. Yu Yanqing secretly glanced at Feng Peilin as he moved out of the way.

“That’s it.”

Lin Chen looked at the secretary gently.

The secretary’s head had buried her head even lower, but her eyes couldn’t help but look at her secret lover. It showed the look of shyness, admiration, with a touch of sweetness, which was the exact look on the girl inside the screen.

“Lao Jiang, you even hid this from me!” Xing Conglian laughed while pounding the table. For the first time, he witnessed the steel-faced political commissar of their unit deflate. It was truly worth the price of admission.

“Alright, alright. Don’t make fun of Xiao Chen.” The political commissar waved his hand quickly. “The case… Focus on the case!”

Outside the office came the sound of heels clicking. Zhang Xiaolong took a stack of documents and ran into the office. Her face was pale as she looked around, a bit frightened.

“What’s wrong, Xiaolong?” Xing Conglian asked.

“You just asked me to check on Feng Peilin. The information shows that Feng Peilin and Yu Yanqing do know each other. Not only are they acquainted, but they are also very familiar.”

“How so?”

Zhang Xiaolong subconsciously looked at Lin Chen as she spoke. She bit her lip and continued, “Feng Peilin used to be Yu Yanqing’s Chinese teacher, and he’s now a teacher working at the city’s Experimental Primary School.”

When he heard this, Lin Chen felt as if he had been struck by lightning and looked at the policewoman, who was still talking in a daze.

“Because of family reasons, Yu Yanqing went to work after junior high. At that time, Feng Peilin was her Chinese teacher. Three years ago, Feng Peilin came to teach at the city’s Experimental Primary School…”

Criminal Psychology Ch13

Chapter 13

From easy to difficult, repeat the practice…

This was the learning method that humans had mastered over nearly 10,000 years of evolution, so learning to overcome was also learning.

“You mean, Yu Yanqing did all this to overcome her fear of death?”

Fu Hao came early with breakfast. Before he had time to put down the warm milk and bread, he heard the important dramatization from Xing Conglian.

“Shixiong, do you have any new clues?”

“Have you heard of systematic desensitization?” Captain Xing sat on the table and asked smugly.

Fu Hao hurriedly put down the plastic bag and ignored him. Instead, he leaned towards Lin Chen and asked, “Systematic desensitization?”

Despite being completely ignored, Xing Conglian didn’t get angry. Instead, he rushed to explain to Fu Hao, “Yes, Yu Yanqing should be using systematic desensitization to ease her fear of death…”

“You, shut up.” Fu Hao glared at Xing Conglian, then asked Lin Chen, “Shixiong, what’s going on?”

“The intent in these cases is closely related to death. They show a gradually magnifying sense of fear. This was the conclusion we had drawn before.” Lin Chen coughed lightly. His tone wasn’t as easy-going as Xing Conglian’s. “But we always lacked a clue that connected everything. It was little fatty that gave us this important hint.”

Fu Hao saw Lin Chen glance at the child sitting on the bench playing with his fingers before saying, “We’re deducing that Yu Yanqing committed these crimes as part of systematic desensitization to allow herself to overcome her fear of death. The entire process should be divided into four steps. First, she approached a corpse, fantasized about death, and then slowly did relaxation training to adapt to the distance from the corpse. That’s why there were traces of someone sleeping under the bed of the hospital morgue and why the corpse was dressed up, as a way to show respect to the dead.”

Lin Chen paused, as if thinking. “Then, it was to watch a brutal murder scene and observe the reactions of others to death. This was followed by killing a person with your own hands, watching him die, and adapting to the process of life fading. This may be the reason why the young man was killed while exercising in the park.”

Fu Hao started feeling a chill as he listened. His lips quivered slightly as he asked softly, “In the end, was it suicide?”

“It was.”

Fu Hao took a deep inhale and felt his teeth chatter and a chill on his cheeks.

“Then, is this case closed?” he asked tremblingly.

Yu Yanqing killed someone, left a suicide note, and committed suicide. Everything was laid out perfectly.

Lin Chen sat on the cold, hard wooden bench and ran his finger along the brim of the cup while tapping it subconsciously, as if he didn’t hear Fu Hao’s question.

“It seems to be the case.” Xing Conglian rubbed his fluffy beard and paused, then said, “But I feel that something is off.”

It was like a terrifying fog. They had gone to great lengths to walk through it, and in the end, touched a high wall—a towering, lofty, wall.

Lin Chen wanted to say the same thing, but he also felt that something was missing.

“I want to take a look at Yu Yanqing’s profile again.” Lin Chen stopped tapping on the cup.

About half an hour later, a young, chattering technician stood at the door holding a laptop. He wore a black cap that had water dripping from its brim, and his eyes were sparkling. When he saw Xing Conglian, his tone was quite plaintive. “Oh Typhoon God, it wasn’t easy to find a ride!”

Xing Conglian bit his cigarette and gestured for the young technician to sit down and get to work.

Wang Chao picked a position close to Lin Chen’s side. While turning on his laptop, he said to Lin Chen, “Mr. Lin, do you play LoL? If you don’t, I can teach you.”

Xing Conglian smacked Wang Chao on the head with his backhand. “Quickly. Yu Yanqing’s information.”

“Let me tell you, this is a bit overkill.” Wang Chao’s fingers tapped rapidly on the keyboard. After a while, a detailed profile was revealed. “These things you’re telling me to do, even a xiao long bao could do.” He adjusted the information, put the mouse in Lin Chen’s hand, and leaned back in the chair.

Yu Yanqing’s life had been organized in great detail. From where she lived when she was a child, to which elementary school she attended, to her most recent medical insurance records, they were all there.

Lin Chen read them quickly. From beginning to end, it took less than five minutes. He released the mouse and frowned.

Xing Conglian leaned in and asked, “Read it all?”

“Yes.”

“What’s wrong?”

“There isn’t anything wrong.”

Yu Yanqing was a very ordinary girl.

She was born in a small town. After nine years of compulsory education, she went to work. She worked as a waitress and a factory worker. Later, she entered the “Good Family” labor company and worked as a gardener, maintaining the city’s No. 3 Primary School’s landscape. In order to make extra money, she worked as a part-time cleaner in the hospital on weekends.

Her resume was simple and clean. It was no different than millions of other country girls her age. The only difference was that, at such a beautiful age, she decided to end her life and the lives of others in the cruelest way.

Given the short period of time, there had to be a powerful event that pushed her away from her flat trajectory.

However, he didn’t see anything in Yu Yanqing’s information.

After thinking about it for a while, Lin Chen finally said, “Are her parents still alive?”

“Yes,” Wang Chao nodded.

“Were there any old people that passed away while she was young?”

“Yes.”

“Strange.”

Yu Yanqing’s experience was plain. Both her parents were still alive. What exactly did she experience before to make her become so obsessed with death?

“Could it be she encountered something in the hospital that triggered this?” Xing Conglian asked in a low voice, sounding unusually mysterious.

……

The hospital was where it all started, and they had now returned to trace the source.

Lin Chen got out of Xing Conglian’s jeep. He looked up at the hospital sign as an ambulance stopped beside him.

The car door opened and a medical staff member carrying a stretcher came out. On the stretcher lay an old man, followed by his son and daughter, who were crying so much their eyes were swollen.

Xing Conglian had pushed open the door only to see Lin Chen still looking back at the middle-aged siblings.

“What?” he asked.

“You know, each of us have experienced this kind of moment. However, when normal people face the departure of their loved ones, they will feel sad and pain, but they won’t have a sense of fear of death. While Yu Yanqing was here, she must’ve witnessed some kind of special death.”

Xing Conglian rubbed his beard and put his hand on the glass door.

A moment later, Lin Chen looked up, and his expression quickly condensed. “The first letter I received was on July 13th. Since then, I’ve received a letter every week. The first time the well-dressed corpse appeared in the hospital was September 7th.” He paused, then continued, “So, between this period, how many patients died in this hospital, including those who died on the floors Yu Yanqing was responsible for cleaning? Also, please check on who Yu Yanqing has been in close contact with.”

Xing Conglian nodded and was about to go to the security department to inquire, but when he took two steps, he heard Lin Chen say from behind him, “The date of death should be Wednesday. The patient probably stayed on the seventh floor in the seventh ward.”

“Why?”

Xing Conglian suddenly felt idiotic for asking. July 13th and September 7th were both on a Wednesday. Yu Yanqing had written him a letter every week, and even the time interval between the appearance of the dressed-up corpse was exactly seven days.

They originally thought this might be just the process of the murderer’s crime, but now it seemed there was a deeper psychological reason.

Looking at Xing Conglian’s back as he walked away, Fu Hao stood beside Lin Chen and asked solemnly, “Shixiong, do you have any guesses as to whether it’s a simple murder case or…”

He wanted Lin Chen to answer him, but Lin Chen remained silent. Instead, he raised his head and gazed at the snow-white walls of the hospital. His eyes followed the glass curtain wall and climbed to a very high floor.

“Let’s go to the seventh floor and take a look,” Lin Chen said.

Fu Hao let out a long sigh. Of course, he knew what kind of rigorous person his shixiong was. If Lin Chen didn’t want to say it, it would remain a secret until he did.

The moment the elevator door opened, the word “Oncology” in scarlet came into view.

At that moment, things started to click for Fu Hao as well.

Lin Chen coughed twice and walked to the end.

The oncology ward was unusually quiet. Occasionally, there were some elderly people walking around slowly while leaning on the railings.

At that moment, a nurse walked past with an old man. Lin Chen remembered that he seemed to have seen this person a few days ago, so he walked up and patted the nurse on the shoulder.

The nurse looked at him strangely. Before he could speak, Lin Chen bluntly asked, “Hello, I would like to ask, do you know someone named Yu Yanqing?”

The other party nodded and said in a disdainful tone, “What’s wrong with her?”

“She’s dead.”

The nurse’s eyes widened in disbelief.

“Suicide,” Lin Chen continued. “I’m not suspecting you. I just want to know if there was anyone close to her that worked in the hospital.”

The nurse’s face changed drastically. “It’s not me! I didn’t kill her!”

Lin Chen thought, ‘Of course it’s not you. You didn’t even know she died. How could you possibly kill her?’

It was only at that moment that he suddenly realized that it wasn’t necessarily what Yu Yanqing experienced that caused her to do those things. Perhaps their initial direction was wrong from the start.

So, if it wasn’t Yu Yanqing, who could make her do these things?

Lin Chen frowned slightly while thinking of possibilities.

“I know it’s not you.” His voice was calm. “I didn’t mean to inquire about the relationship between you and Yu Yanqing. This is your privacy.” He spoke softly while in his mind a model of a sand table appeared, slowly sketching the “possibility”. “I want you to recall whether you have ever seen a pair of mother and son. The son should be between 35-40 and the mother about 65. The mother was quite strict with her son that you thought it was vile for a woman to be so domineering at that age.”

The interpretation of the sand table was itself a kind of arbitrary imagination. Lin Chen connected what he felt when he visited the scene of death many times. It was a strong confrontation between external order and internal chaos. It was confusing, lonely, and he felt helpless. “I think you would have a strong impression of that son. He was so obedient to his mother that you thought it was like a child not yet weaned.” He changed his tone, speaking more slowly. “But he was so gentlemanly and well-behaved that you could even consider him charming.”

The nurse suddenly looked up, as if remembering something.

“Who is it?”

“The son of a patient who used to stay in bed number 3, ward 7. Yanqing used to clean that area.”

“What was wrong with the mother?”

“Stomach cancer, particularly torturous.” The nurse wasn’t evasive in responding.

“Did… she commit suicide?”

The nurse was shocked, but still nodded.

Happy Doomsday Ch220

Author: 年终 / Nian Zhong

Chapter 220: Preliminary Idea

Even if he knew in advance that the S-type advanced products used his mother’s DNA, there was still a difference between knowing it and being exposed to it. Everything at the moment only confirmed Tang Yibu’s inference. Ruan Xian found himself calmer than he had imagined.

Tang Yibu had already gone to pick up their meals. Ruan Xian retracted his gaze without leaving a trace and continued to survey the hall.

When they first encountered them, the high-level D-type products caused them a lot of trouble. He was familiar with the characteristics related to the S-type. If the Mainbrain was armed with R-α and R-β, he would be fine, but Tang Yibu might actually die.

Time was passing by minute by minute.

Ruan Xian looked around. The external architectural structure could be handled by Tang Yibu. In fact, he didn’t really need to do anything, and Tang Yibu would still be able to carry out his destruction by himself. The problem was, how was he going to scrape up as much information as possible before escaping and causing maximum trouble for the enemy’s pursuit.

What about combining the two aspects?

By cleverly controlling the physical destruction and paralyzing the corresponding systems at the same time, they could escape silently. Before the Mainbrain found out that they had disappeared, they would already be gone. In this way, even if the S-type and A-type advanced products attacked together, they wouldn’t be able to find them.

Ruan Xian retracted his gaze and peered around. He acted as if he was studying the light screen in front of him.

Tang Yibu was now outside. The risk of infiltrating too deeply was too high. Perhaps Ruan Xian could find a way to do it… In short, first, Ruan Xian needed more permission. Ruan Xian touched his chin, then put his fingers close to the light screen.

Tang Yibu quickly brought the food back, and after dividing the portion with the staff member in front of them, he ate half of the food and gave Ruan Xian the rest. Ruan Xian didn’t even know if the shell was equipped with taste sensors, but perhaps it was just the thought that counted for Tang Yibu.

Ruan Xian didn’t touch the desserts, leaving them to stay in the box quietly. He couldn’t really become an expert in mechanical life in just a few hours, but he could cheat a bit—at least he was familiar with the information about the S-type Prototype.

“Analyzing the viral destructive ability of the S-type advanced products.” Tang Yibu stood carelessly behind Ruan Xian’s chair while staring at the words on the screen. “Good idea.”

This was the inspiration from their battle against Z-α and Z-β in the Android Show. Tang Yibu instantly understood Ruan Xian’s plan.

If Ruan Xian gave them enough information, he could obtain higher authority and, with it, more information. Then he would find the opportunity to give this system a blow, and with their own abilities, they could escape cleanly.

It seemed that several of the escape routes Tang Yibu planned were useless.

Tang Yibu had never felt this way before. Compared to calculations, this was more like real-time creation, or an impromptu dance—two people adjusting their strategies at any time, dancing together in a dark room, stumbling and avoiding those ill-intentioned obstacles. With too many possibilities, he stopped making complicated calculations and tried to summarize the logical results.

Now, it was more like he was happily exploring more possibilities… and enjoying them.

Perhaps this was why people had always liked gift boxes. Tang Yibu solemnly wiped the crumbs from his hands. He bent down and wrapped his arms around Ruan Xian’s neck from behind and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Very good. Mr. Ruan, continue like this. You really are useful.”

Ruan Xian glanced at him angrily and amusingly. This was definitely not the first time he had heard this statement. Tang Yibu definitely did this on purpose.

“Don’t worry about things outside. I’ll take care of everything for you, just like before.” Tang Yibu continued to use subtext to convey information. “I’ll be there whenever you want me to.”

It seemed that Tang Yibu was ready.

“I still need a little more time to adapt,” Ruan Xian said as he continued to enter information on the light screen with both hands. “Don’t bother me yet… In 3 hours, I want to meet Mr. Hu Shuli. Can you make the appointment for me?”

Tang Yibu stroked Ruan Xian’s cheek with one hand, then smiled and narrowed his eyes. “Of course.”

…It seemed that he was having a good time. Ruan Xian tried to accumulate some tension but failed miserably. Even so, he still didn’t plan to waste the slightest time—as prisoners, the situation of Lao Yu and Ji Xiaoman was difficult to tell.

“Professor Ruan once told me that the first 24 hours of work are crucial. If you feel good during this period of time, it means that you haven’t chosen the wrong path.” Ruan Xian grabbed Tang Yibu’s hand and pretended to sigh. “I know I made a bad choice, but it feels so… How do I put it? Very ‘appropriate’, which is ironic.”

Tang Yibu kissed the top of Ruan Xian’s hair as if to comfort him.

However, they all knew that Professor Ruan never said anything of that nature.

“24 hours is too short to make a judgement. Don’t be too impatient,” Tang Yibu hinted.

“This is not an environment where I can linger and make decisions, Yibu. The Mainbrain isn’t so tolerant.” Ruan Xian smiled bitterly.

There were only 62 hours left, and it was impossible for them to escape silently in broad daylight. If they leave tomorrow night, the rest of their time remaining would be quite tight.

Ruan Xian successfully met with Hu Shuli during his lunch break.

Coincidentally, Hu Shuli had the same idea…

“Ruan Lijie could be Ruan Xian’s spy?” Hu Shuli scratched his head at the light screen. “How can you take such a risk with a technician!”

“Maybe for the surprise element. After all, your project team has information on S-type advanced products, and the projects under development are enough to affect the current war situation,” Zhuo Muran said from the other end of the light screen. “We will analyze the assistant machine here. All information will be passed over. Just in case, you should keep an eye on him.”

“Haa… how troublesome.” Hu Shuli sighed. “Bluntly put, Ruan Xian and I have no hatred, and the project side is also busy. Can’t you send someone to watch him? As a junior, Xiao Ruan is quite cute.”

“You can’t spook the snake,” Zhuo Muran replied coldly. “This afternoon, you will need to transfer R-α and M-α to the vicinity of the stronghold in the name of research. Once there is an abnormality, they are more useful than an army of tens of thousands of people.”

“Isn’t this a bit much to deal with a technician?”

“This technician has already deceived me once with NUL-00. Ruan Lijie isn’t as harmless as he seems. On the other hand, it’s not certain that NUL-00 isn’t lurking nearby—he’s carrying the A-type Prototype. If we don’t take proper precaution, he can destroy this entire stronghold by himself.”

“I see. I’ll talk with him during my lunch break and suss out the situation. I’ll frame it as being concerned for a subordinate.” Hu Shuli shrugged. “If you ask me, if those feelings are just acting, then he must be a very skilled liar… Since he’s so young and has a deep understanding of the pathology of mechanical life, he wouldn’t have much time to hone his acting skills.”

Zhuo Muran didn’t answer.

Lunch wasn’t served uniformly but in an made-to-order format. Tang Yibu didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to take more. He ordered a meal for two according to Ruan Xian’s taste and sat opposite Ruan Xian in the dining hall.

Ruan Xian thought this feeling felt familiar. They seemed to have returned to the underground canteen in the shade refuge.

Fortunately, the surveillance here was looser than in Ruan Xian’s room. Tang Yibu was able to have a brief exchange with Ruan Xian by fooling the surveillance system installed in the mechanical shell.

However, considering the security, they still chose a relatively secret form.

They were like a middle school couple in love. Tang Yibu ate with his left hand while his right held Ruan Xian’s right hand tightly. From an angle that the camera couldn’t see, he wrote lightly on the back of Ruan Xian’s hand.

[What do you think now?] He wrote extremely fast. [I originally considered breaking you out of here directly, but there’s nothing wrong with just escaping either. You don’t need to rush the time so much.]

[I don’t think the Mainbrain will believe me so quickly.] Ruan Xian wrote back. For a second, he missed that earring a little. [But whether it thinks I’m a spy or a true surrender—according to normal logic, I will stay here for a long time and won’t run away. We can use this judgment to buy more time.]

He glanced at Tang Yibu and then assessed carelessly. [I don’t want you to take risks.]

[What about the specific plan?] Tang Yibu showed a strange jerky smile.

[In fact, Professor Ruan’s thinking is similar to the Mainbrain. Whether it’s the assassination machine or the assistance of human brains or the current back-up alternatives plus mechanical support, the essence is to increase the spread of the virus and give the Mainbrain the strongest blow.]

Ruan Xian used chopsticks to pick up a piece of boiled beef.

[On the Mainbrain side, it hopes to use the S-type advanced products as the core and expand the perception range of R-α and R-β so it could catch Professor Ruan as soon as possible. This is also related to the scope of information dissemination. Now that Professor Ruan has the mechanical structure, we can combine the plans of both sides.]

[Professor Ruan’s spare equipment? I thought about it, but it’s too late to make another one.] In public, Tang Yibu maintained a relatively good eating appearance.

[First, focus on theoretical resources.] Ruan Xian went back to the topic. [I want the technology that Hu Shuli said could “expand the perception ability of the S-type advanced products”.]

Tang Yibu bit the tip of his chopsticks and thought for a moment, cleaning a space on his plate.

[This is the center used for offense.] He dug a spoonful of mashed potatoes and covered the side of the plate.

[Assuming that we get the Mainbrain’s technology, as the superior S-type advanced product, you can directly use it. Then this is the channel used to spread the message.] He put a circle of shredded onion around the mash potatoes. [This is your role.]

Ruan Xian: “……”

[This is me. I must be responsible for the attack.] Tang Yibu put a candied cherry on top of the mashed potatoes.

[This is the Mainbrain.] Then he picked up a big bone that had been eaten clean and placed it on the opposite side of the mashed potatoes. [To carry out an independent attack, we still lack key things.]

Finally, the android scooped a spoonful of green beans and scattered them around the mashed potatoes. [Even in Professor Ruan’s ideal plan, auxiliary resources can’t be omitted. Otherwise, we won’t be able to resist the massive defense of the Mainbrain. And my guess is, you don’t want to use human brains.]

[We lack auxiliary resources that can be linked.] Ruan Xian glanced at the soft shredded onions. [I understand, but you misunderstood a little, Yibu.]

Tang Yibu gave a questioning look.

[Professor Ruan’s tactics are the most logically reasonable, but I don’t plan to copy his ideas.] Ruan Xian smiled. He picked up the cherry and put it in his mouth. Then he pressed the mased potatoes with a spoon and pushed it directly onto the big bone.

Tang Yibu’s eyes flashed. [I don’t understand.]

[I haven’t figured out the details yet. It depends on the harvest this afternoon.] Ruan Xian swallowed the cherry and spat out the seed. [We’ll talk about it in detail then.]

A stronghold near the Sea of Ruins.

Yu Le shook his head and woke up from a long coma. He blinked laboriously. It took a while for his gaze to regain its focus. He was sitting in a pure white room. His hands and feet were tightly locked on a chair, and someone in a white coat was sitting opposite of him.

The moment he saw the person’s face clearly, Yu Le stopped breathing.

…It was his long-dead sister.

“How arrogant.” Yu Le moved his lips a few times before he succeeded in making a sound. “Don’t fuck with me like this.”

“Long time no see, Lazy Fish.” The woman opposite smiled lightly.

“Piss off!”

“You’ve been in a coma for a day or two. It’s not good to get too angry. Don’t be nervous. You’ll be fine for the time being. That’s just a necessary preparation. You and the girl were injected with a brain-stimulating drug to ensure that you’d enter the best condition. The initial coma was the most intense reaction, but you’ll become more and more awake.”

It was as if the woman hadn’t heard Yu Le’s scolding.

“In less than three days, your brain will reach its best condition. The Mainbrain will then take it out and crush it directly to get all your information without any leakage… If you’re willing to explain before then, we can save all the trouble and skip the crushing your brain step.”

Yu Le stared at the unfamiliar sister in front of him. His eyes were flushed, and he gritted his teeth.

“Since you have followed Ruan Xian, I don’t think you’ll like having your brain crush and stored as data, so sister is here to help you. After all, the fresher the information, the better.”

The woman’s expression softened.

“Lazy Fish, think about it. This is a good opportunity… The girl you’re with is next door. You can give her her freedom if you just tell everything.”

“You idiots think we’ll believe your nonsense.” Yu Le spat. “You won’t give up until you get information from both of us to compare. I’ve done torture before, so I’m very familiar with this routine.”

The woman stood up with a sad expression on her face.

“Sorry, then I’m afraid something bad will happen next… I’ll come see you again, and by then, I hope you’ll make the right choice.

She sighed and left the room, slowly closing the door.

Chapter 219: Mother’s Data

Zhuo Muran was busier than usual since he got the relevant information about Professor Ruan. He stared at the complete map of the world floating in the center of the room, densely marked with dots and icons of different colors, with countless numbers and text changing in real time. There were also more than thirty analysts in the room, sitting around the map, each of whom was monitoring the calculations and reports on a large number of light screens.

After quickly browsing through the possible combat analysis, Zhuo Muran pinched his brows and breathed a sigh of relief.

When the Mainbrain discovered Professor Ruan’s possible resistance plan, it almost immediately began to deduce all possible situations. Zhuo Muran’s mind was hit with all kinds of assumptions and names of places all day, and now it was time to slow down. After dismissing a couple of inferences that were too flawed, Zhuo Muran grabbed his cup and walked out of the room.

The projection of MUL-01 was standing barefoot in the corridor, still in his familiar appearance.

All the information in the room would be synchronized to the MUL-01 database in real time, so Zhuo Muran skipped the reporting step. It was three in the morning, and he needed a cup of black coffee. The projection of MUL-01 was as fresh and beautiful as ever, without the slightest trace of fatigue.

As the commander-in-chief of the Order Supervisors, Zhuo Muran knew what he was facing.

Behind this figure was a mechanical god comparable in size to St. Peter’s Basilica. The Mainbrain was constantly calculating the data of every petri dish and the details of every city. Countless calculations and judgments were taking place in that mechanical behemoth at all hours of the day and night. The one standing in front of him, at best, was one of the smallest out of hundreds of millions of parallel programs.

It never rest, never made mistakes, and would never cause scandals due to factors like aging and desire. And it would always maintain a friendly state—the Mainbrain could give them notification through text instructions, but it preferred to use projections to communicate with them.

“What’s wrong? Zhuo Muran poured himself a cup of coffee. His tone couldn’t help but soften a bit.

“Ruan Lijie.” The projection’s fair fingers crossed the air, and a real-time monitoring page was displayed in front of the two of them.

The carefully arranged residence was dark. Ruan Lijie and Tang Yibu, whom the Mainbrain had sent, were lying side by side, stiffly moving. Ruan Lijie kept a certain distance from it, while staring at the ceiling blankly. Except for the intermittent blinking and the rise and fall of his chest, the young researcher was not much different from a corpse.

“Normal situation.” Zhuo Muran observed. “It’s normal for him not to get close to it immediately. Researchers are more rational than ordinary people. Just wait a while—if he can make a relatively rational choice, there’s still value in communication.”

“I understand it’s normal.” The Mainbrain smiled at him. “The information provided by this person is also quite interesting. Those plans are Ruan Xian’s style. There’s just one thing I care about—until now, I still can’t determine the true identity of that person, ‘Ruan Lijie’.”

Zhuo Muran was slightly startled.

“We all know that ‘Ruan Lijie’ is a fake identity. The information about this person is in my database, but I have done more analysis. It should be one of the ghost identities that Ruan Xian forged. A social profile cultivated by Ruan Xian himself. In fact, Ruan Lijie doesn’t exist… Not to mention, the resume of ‘Ruan Lijie’ on file is quite ordinary. The most recent recorded job is a café waiter.”

“Of course, ‘Ruan Lijie’ might be a fake identity given to him by Ruan Xian, but after uncovering this layer, I still can’t find any records about this person. Based on his physical age, I’ve checked the information on men who should be between 25 and 45 this year, but I found nothing.”

It was like he was truly a ghost. Zhuo Muran frowned.

“Hm, it seems you found a problem. If he has undergone comprehensive plastic surgery, then there should be relevant records in the medical system or accident system. If he’s the type to have his file sealed for some special reason, he shouldn’t be able to become a mechanical life expert at such a young age—it’s impossible for his family to give him resources for such an education.”

The Mainbrain tucked its long black hair behind its head.

“Except for his unusually vague identity, he is otherwise perfect, but this is enough to keep us suspicious. Remember to take this into account when you project Ruan Xian’s plans. The possibility that ‘Ruan Lijie is a spy’ can’t be ruled out yet, so have Hu Shuli’s team keep a close eye on him once he starts working.”

“Yes,” Zhuo Muran said, then took a sip of coffee. “I’ll also tell Hu Shuli…”

“Don’t let anyone conduct any kind of trial, or he’ll find out our suspicions. There is no room for deviation in this matter. He may lead us to Ruan Xian.”

“I know.” Zhuo Muran nodded.

It was an insignificant suspicion, so Zhuo Muran had subconsciously ignored it. After all, the information given by Ruan Lijie was true and now seemed quite accurate. If someone were to take the lead in this matter, most likely they would cling to the clues given with all their strength.

Interesting. Zhuo Muran took another sip of coffee, swallowed another replenishing potion, and rubbed his heavy eyelids.

If Ruan Xian was really bold enough to throw an unarmed technician here as a smokescreen, then naturally Zhuo Muran would make the other party regret making that decision from the very bottom of their heart.

In fact, he, Tang Yibu, and Ruan Lijie were all sinners, so it was very fitting.

In order to ensure a clear mind, Ruan Xian slept for three hours. It stood to reason this should be his first day working under the Mainbrain, but they only had 63 hours left.

Tang Yibu’s actual body was outside, and it was impossible for the android created by the Mainbrain to accompany him 24 hours a day, so they agreed on a silly code…

“I want to eat boiled eggs.” Ruan Xian’s voice was clear.

“Got it, baby.” The “Tang Yibu” in front of him was just an assistant robot. If he were to ask Tang Yibu this question…

[I would say, “I want to eat it too”.] Was what Tang Yibu said last night. [When I come back… “You look tired. Would you like something to eat? Such as sweet potatoes”, I’ll ask you a similar question like that. You must remember everything we have eaten.]

It was a very Tang Yibu-style codeword. Ruan Xian smiled and agreed with him, then took a high-quality nap.

To make sure that the real Tang Yibu was no longer here, Ruan Xian had to continue acting. He was organizing the information given by Tang Yibu while trying to look at the “Tang Yibu” in front of him with a sad gaze.

Today’s breakfast was a soft-boiled egg cooked to perfection, with fragrant porridge and a careful arrangement of side dishes. The ingredients were probably carefully selected, unlike the boiled eggs from the Underground City, which smelled like dried mushrooms.

“Don’t be nervous,” “Tang Yibu” said. “You’ll be fine.”

No. If he looked at “Tang Yibu” again, Ruan Xian might really collapse. It was painful trying to hold back his laughter. Ruan Xian had only seen Tang Yibu eating like this in the shade refuge. When it was just the two of them, the android would even play games like throwing pieces of bread in the air and trying to catch them with his mouth.

If it was his own Tang Yibu that was here…

Ruan Xian looked at the chopsticks in his hands. The android would peel three or four eggs in a row, then skewer them on a chopstick to eat.

“I’m full.” Ruan Xian tried his best to eat the highest calorie yolk and left the table as soon as possible. He was afraid that he wouldn’t be able to hold back his laughter.

“No appetite?”

“Nn,” Ruan Xian responded quickly. “I want to find something to distract me first, sorry.”

As he guessed, Hu Shuli didn’t want to overwhelm him too much on the first day. He just opened up a database that didn’t have sensitive information so that Ruan Xian could familiarize himself with the basic information of the S-type advanced products. Hu Shuli was quite good. He thoughtfully arranged a secluded location for Ruan Xian that was close to the soothing green glass pillars.

In order not to put too much pressure, Tang Yibu, the assistant robot, stood behind the glass column.

Ruan Xian spent ten minutes stuffing all the information into his mind, and then decided to spend the remaining time in a daze. He scrolled the information slowly while making a trance expression from time to time. His thinking had already run to cloud nine—he communicated with Tang Yibu for a long time last night. In terms of identifying Fan Linsong’s image data, the android was much better than him.

[This building is in the Glass Conservatory.] Tang Yibu seemed quite certain. [In order to investigate the environment, I entered the model of the entire city into my own system.]

[Fan Linsong is locked up in the Glass Conservatory?]

If he thought about it carefully, it was a perfect environment. The security measures of that petri dish were stricter than the other cities of the Mainbrain with the Glass Conservatory being the best among them. It also had the most advanced memory operation equipment. Placing Fan Linsong at the highest level of the city, it was difficult to say whether the Mainbrain was being considerate or ruthless.

[I am 100% sure. Do you remember the device I used to distract Zhuo Muran? At that time, it flew to the most heavily guarded place—the rooftop of a high-rise building. Based on the comparison and calculations of the floor height and the city model, the security there should be set up for Fan Linsong. We used to be very close to him.]

[If it’s the Glass Conservatory, it may be a bit troublesome to make contact.] Unlike Fu Yu and K6 in the Underground City, the ones in the Glass Conservatory didn’t owe them a favor. Now that Luo Fei had become the leader, it would be nice if he didn’t hate Professor Ruan. It was hard to say if he would be willing to lend a hand.

[We do have a contact channel, so let’s put this question aside first. Luo Fei’s side isn’t really good. I can still intimidate or tempt them… but it’s best to make a deal.]

[If I can contact him, I am confident I can convince Fan Linsong. The world has become like this, and he has been isolated by the Mainbrain for so long. I can probably guess his state.] Ruan Xian nodded.

[In other words, we can obtain the hardware weaknesses of the Mainbrain, and you also know the specific location of the Mainbrain’s hardware.] Tang Yibu smiled with satisfaction. [According to Professor Ruan’s mechanical information, I can probably guess a bit about how he plans to attack the Mainbrain.]

[But that requires a large amount of external resource support.] Ruan Xian pointed out mercilessly.

[Yes, I will think of a way.] Tang Yibu smacked his lips. [In other words, there are two things that are certain at the moment—contact Fan Linsong, and finally use Yu Le’s escape to start a series of chaos…]

[Finally, go save Yu Le and Ji Xiaoman.] Ruan Xian chuckled as he corrected Tang Yibu’s statement. [You don’t hate them, do you?]

[…Nn. The meals Yu Le promised to cook for me haven’t been cooked yet, and Miss Ji is also very good to π.] Tang Yibu murmured for a while before speaking solemnly.

[The details have been discussed, so for the time being, first you must examine the situation of this stronghold and determine the escape plan. I’ll try to get more information from inside.]

Now was the time to practice this plan. Ruan Xian ended his walk through memory lane and looked around. Then he stood up, pretended to stretch his body, maximized his perception, and began to peek and eavesdrop in a dignified manner.

“Are you tired, Mr. Ruan?” The Tang Yibu assistant robot said mechanically. “…You ate too little this morning. Do you want some high-calorie food? Butter biscuits and chocolates are good.”

It seemed that Tang Yibu was back.

“No need.” Ruan Xian twitched the corners of his mouth and patted the other’s arm “probingly”. “I just haven’t sat down to work like this in a long time, so I’ve become unaccustomed.”

Tang Yibu narrowed his eyes at him.

“Sweets can make you feel better.” He turned around and asked again.

Most likely, this guy just wanted it for himself. Ruan Xian wiped his face. “Alright, thank you… Yibu.”

“I want some too.” The person sitting not far from Ruan Xian had heard their conversation and chimed in. This action made the light screen previously covered by his body exposed. Ruan Xian took the opportunity to capture the data in his mind.

Then he was stunned.

The light screen was full of genetic information that he was extremely familiar with.

In order to treat his illness, Ruan Xian knew all the DNA-related characteristics of himself and his mother. Although the information on the screen in front of the man was complicated and incomprehensible, and there were a lot of long-winded comments around it, he could still recognize its owner.

That was part of his mother’s genetic data.

…It seemed the person he saw in the Mainbrain’s city was indeed not an illusion.

The author has something to say:

Tang: Mr. Ruan, you look a little weak. Why don’t you have some of the highest-grade beef for lunch, with the best wine and some snacks that you can’t get outside?

Ruan: … (For a while, I can’t be sure if the core has changed, or Tang just wants to eat with the Mainbrain)

Ruan: Okay. (Anyway, promise first)

Tang: Plan succesful.jpg
