Chapter 73

The time was approaching noon.

The strong sunlight was broken into fragmented patterns of light and shadow by layers of leaves in the green corridor, casting a mottled glow on Zhou Qian’s face.

Opening the request message sent by [137] in the “Intended Teammate” column, Zhou Qian didn’t rush to accept.

After returning to the trading screen, he stared at [137’s] message for a long while before finally replying with: [Why did you choose the codename ‘137’?]

After a moment, the reply came. [Just a fleeting memory when I was choosing the codename.]

Zhou Qian asked, [What memory?]

The only response was, [You forgot?]

Zhou Qian narrowed his eyes. He averted his gaze from the system panel and pulled out his cellphone.

He opened a page that was centered on a report about Zhang Yanjun’s death.

Zhang Yanjun was Zhou Qian’s shadow and nightmare.

But the shadow wasn’t really caused by Zhang Yanjun himself. Through Zhang Yanjun, he saw the coldness of his parents. Because of Zhang Yanjun, he became a murderer. These two facts combined to form the nightmare in his heart and also became the root of his mental illness.

Normally, Zhou Qian appeared the most flamboyant in school, and his family seemed the most glamorous.

But from that day, not only did he clearly see the filth in his family, but he also realized that while his classmates could live ordinary, blameless lives, he could not. He was a murderer and could never be a good person in this life.

If he couldn’t be a good person, then he simply wouldn’t be one.

Afterwards, Zhou Qian not only tried to lock away his emotions, but he also deliberately sealed his memories of the incident.

He had never revisited any reports related to Zhang Yanjun’s death until last night.

After chatting with Qi Liuxing the previous night, Zhou Qian didn’t immediately fall asleep.

After closing his eyes for a while, he visualized a blazing fire.

Sarah ran towards the fire, but in Zhou Qian’s eyes, what disappeared into the flames was clearly Bai Zhou’s soul.

It felt as though, no matter how hard he chased, he could never truly touch that soul.

Unable to sleep, Zhou Qian began searching for reports about the past incident.

For the first time, he saw another side to the case of Zhang Yanjun’s death.

The report indicated that Zhang Yanjun died from cerebral hemorrhage.

It was speculated that the cause of his death was due to his inability to sleep after a night of revelry. The next morning, he took a small amount of sleeping pills to fall asleep. However, before the effects of the medication had completely worn off, he woke up feeling thirsty. As he held an empty glass, intending to go downstairs to fetch some water, he unexpectedly missed a step and fell down the stairs.

During the fall, he was injured by shards of the broken glass, with one shard even piercing his abdomen, but that wasn’t the fatal injury.

The actual cause of his death was a blow to the back of his head against the stairs, which led to cerebral hemorrhage. This resulted in increased cranial pressure and, subsequently, a brain herniation, ultimately causing his breathing and heartbeat to stop.

The butler, who was in the same villa as Zhang Yanjun, became the prime suspect.

However, due to insufficient evidence, he was released.

Additionally, the butler’s testimony confirmed Zhang Yanjun’s habit of taking sleeping pills, further supporting the accidental death narrative.

In the end, there was no sympathy for Zhang Yanjun’s death.

Public opinion was unanimous: “He deserved it! It was divine retribution!”

This was because the butler provided important pieces of evidence about Zhang Yanjun—several mobile hard drives, each of which clearly recorded Zhang Yanjun with various children in his bedroom.

The butler knew about this matter beforehand but never reported it to the police, effectively participating in Zhang Yanjun’s criminal activities.

However, now that he has proactively reported it, it somewhat resembles the actions of a tainted witness seeking to make amends for their wrongdoing. The police also sought leniency for him in return.

Reading all this, Zhou Qian wasn’t sure if Bai Zhou actually inflicted any additional wounds that day.

But there was another possibility—

Due to Zhou Qian disconnecting all phone lines and taking Zhang Yanjun’s phone battery, the injured Zhang Yanjun couldn’t call for help from the bedroom.

The soundproofing was excellent, and the butler, who also took the sleeping pills, didn’t hear Zhang Yanjun’s cries for help from upstairs.

So, Zhang Yanjun tried to get downstairs to use the landline or find the butler.

Dizzy from the sleeping pills and blood loss, he might have stumbled and fallen, injuring the back of his head, which led to his death.

Even if Bai Zhou hadn’t delivered a fatal blow, he did three things:

—First, cleaned up the glass shards and rearranged the scene, concealing evidence of Zhou Qian’s actions.

—Second, instructed the butler to delete any footage involving Zhou Qian.

—Third, through threats, persuasion, or other means, convinced the butler to report Zhang Yanjun’s crimes prior to his death.

After quickly browsing through the related news again, Zhou Qian’s attention shifted away from his phone. Immediately, he noticed that [137] had sent another trade request in the trading channel.

The attached note read: [Zhou Qian? Are you still there?]

Zhou Qian’s pupils constricted slightly, replying based on their previous conversation. [Hmm, I forgot about the ‘137’ matter. But I realize there might be many things I’ve overlooked in the past. It suddenly occurs to me that maybe I’ve never truly known you.”

Zhou Qian’s words seemed rather serious.

Of course, he meant it to be that way.

He was curious to see what “137” would do next.

After that, [137] was silent for a long while.

After waiting for some time, Zhou Qian finally saw a message from [137]: [Would you like to try matching with me?]

Zhou Qian: [Match for what?]

[137]: [A trial instance.]

Zhou Qian: [Trial for what?]

[137]: “Compatibility.”

Zhou Qian: [Compatibility for what?]

[137]: [I want you to become my Shepherd.]

Zhou Qian: [Can you explain?]

[137]: [Once a player reaches Rank S, they can choose to become a Rank God player’s Shepherd. The trial instance tests the compatibility between the Shepherd and the Rank God player. Upon successful completion, apart from the standard instance rewards, if the compatibility is good, we can officially bind and establish a one-to-one Shepherd relationship.]

Zhou Qian: [What kind of instance is it?]

[137]: “Very unique. It will have multiple players participating, but unlike the solo-clearance mode you’ve played before, we’ll enter as a duo. Specifically, it’s a semi-open instance. Players above Rank S can join, and as it progresses, new players can constantly join. Different players might trigger different sub-instances or levels. The hidden instances you’ve unlocked previously might also be linked here.]

Zhou Qian: [Oh. Actually, I’m not that interested in being your Shepherd.]

Facing this statement, there was no immediate reply from [137].

Zhou Qian stared at the trading channel for a moment, a slight smirk forming at the corner of his lips.

He then opened the “Intended Teammate” menu, and this time he clicked on the request from [137] and hit the “Accept” button.

Both of them became each other’s intended teammates. Now, Zhou Qian could directly message [137] without going through the trading channel.

Zhou Qian sent: [Even though I’m not too interested in the Shepherd thing, nor do I know exactly what it entails, since I can continue to unlock hidden achievements in this trial instance, I’ll consider it.]

[137] replied quickly: “Alright. See you in the instance then.”

Zhou Qian, looking at the popped-up dialogue box, smirked again and sent another message: [How many Rank God players are there, exactly?]

137: [A lot. Definitely more than what’s rumored outside.]

Zhou Qian: [Oh. So, do only Rank God players get to choose Shepherds?]

137: [?]

Zhou Qian: [From what you’ve described, in that semi-open instance, I could meet many players. Not everyone entering as a duo is necessarily aiming for a Shepherd relationship, right? So, if I encounter other suitable Rank God players, can I be their Shepherd? It’s a mutual selection, right? Otherwise, it’s so unfair. Why should we ‘lower-tier players’ be passively chosen?]

After waiting a minute, [137] replied, [Other God-level players are not suitable for you.]

Zhou Qian: [?]

[137]: [The Shepherd relationship requires a mental bond. We’ve already established a basis from the three instances you’ve cleared together, so we’re likely to bond mentally. In fact, before entering low-level instances as NPCs, Rank God players have already checked your data. So far, no other Rank God player has chosen you as their intended Shepherd. Thus, you and others are not compatible. If you don’t want to be a Shepherd, you can completely abandon this path.]

Zhou Qian: [Oh. So, my rapid promotion to Rank S is advantageous for you too? You won’t have to suffer being an NPC in low-level dungeons?]

After a pause, [137] replied, [It’s alright. I don’t suffer.]

Zhou Qian fell silent this time.

After a while, he asked again, [When will we enter that instance?]

[137]: [In seven days. Is that okay?]

Zhou Qian: [Why wait for seven days?]

[137]: [You should rest a bit more.]

Zhou Qian: [And you?]

[137]: [I’ll be grinding—collecting some equipment and items.]

After sending that message, seemingly fearing Zhou Qian might misunderstand, [137] quickly added: [Currently, only the Shepherd relationship trial instance allows us to team up as a duo. You can’t enter the other monster-farming instances I can enter yet.]

……

Elsewhere, Hidden Blade glanced at the messages in the public channel where the Rank God players resided during a moment of inactivity.

[“Universe No. 907″ instance, anyone grinding? Need a tank.]

[“Xiangxi Corpse King” instance 2/3, desperately seeking a wet nurse, thanks!]

[“Snake Den”, have a wet nurse and tank, seeking a high DPS!]

[Let’s do it again. “Snake Den” looking for high DPS, perhaps Boss 137 can join?]

[Upstairs?? OMG, is 137 here? We don’t need a wet nurse for “Xiangxi Corpse King” anymore, just seeking 137, thanks!]

[Don’t joke, guys. Boss 137 is recently addicted to being an NPC. He’s not farming.]

[Who’s that upstairs? Do you know 137? Stop pretending, I’ve never heard that Boss 137 has friends.]

[Yeah, right? 137 rarely teams up. Occasionally someone might get matched with him through sheer dumb luck.]

Seeing the term “dumb luck”, Hidden Blade frowned deeply, feeling like he had been shot in the knee*.

*Arrow in the knee. Internet meme that originated from Skyrim

The messages on the public screen continued—

[Anyone up for equipment farming? Seeking teammates for “White Cloud Treasure Vault”. I’m one, waiting for three more. I also want to try with 137!!]

Unable to restrain himself, Hidden Blade sent out several messages in succession.

[Who said 137 doesn’t have friends? I’m his friend! He’s resting, he won’t team up with you guys.]

[Also, 137 never checks public channel messages!]

[Besides, the brother who mentioned farming “White Cloud Treasure Vault”, that garbage instance drops low-tier equipment. Boss 137 would never be interested! He never lacks such gear. You want Boss 137 to carry you into the “White Cloud Treasure Vault”? Are you joking with me?]

What Hidden Blade never expected was to be proven wrong just 10 seconds later.

[OMG! “Boss 137″ has joined the team.]

[Who just said Big Bosses doesn’t check the public channel? Who said he doesn’t farm “White Cloud Treasure Vault”?]

[Ahhhh, gotta go. I’m off to worship Boss 137!]

Stunned for three seconds, Hidden Blade quickly clicked to join the team.

Soon after, he indeed saw Bai Zhou.

Hidden Blade quickly pulled Bai Zhou into a private chat. [What’s your situation? Aren’t you resting?]

Bai Zhou: [Oh, by the way, I saw your message. He Xiaowei got a double experience card and Rank S?]

[Uh? Why?] Hidden Blade asked.

Bai Zhou: [We can try the trial instance. I’ve teamed up with Zhou Qian. I’ll pair with him, and you can pair with He Xiaowei.]

[Wait, did I hear that wrong? Not only are you farming White Cloud Treasure Vault, but you’re also… going to a trial instance?]

[Yes. You heard right.]

“I won’t comment on your physical body in reality. But your mental strength is approaching its threshold. At this time… you’re actually entering a trial instance? Didn’t you say you’d rest for a while?]

[There are things I need to explain to him. Meeting face-to-face is better.]

Hidden Blade paused, then asked, [Boss, I’m not in a position to pry into your private matters. But… the mental threshold isn’t a joke. Aren’t you afraid you’ll suddenly go berserk in the dungeon?]

[My Shepherd is there. It’s fine,] Bai Zhou said. [But it’d be better if you were there. You’ve had minor training in crowd control. You can discuss specific details with him.]

Hidden Blade was speechless. [Then, what’s with the White Cloud Treasure Vault? Why would you need the equipment and items from here?]

Bai Zhou didn’t answer but walked towards the instance’s entrance. [We have ample time; we can run it seven times.]

Hidden Blade: […………]

Why did I even come? Is it too late to back out now?

……

Seven days later.

Zhou Qian accepted the team request sent by “Intended Teammate” [137] and entered the semi-open instance with a brand-new mode.

[Player Zhou Qian entered instance: “Blue Harbor City 2301”]

[Instance difficulty: Unknown; Clearance rate: Unknown]

[Hidden achievement completion rate: Unknown]

[Number of players: Unknown]

[Tip 1: According to system detection, although you have reached Rank S, in this city, compared to other veteran players, you are still a complete newbie. Please be careful to protect yourself and avoid conflicts with high-level players! Otherwise, you might meet an untimely end!]

[Tip 2: As you are still a low-tier newbie, the sub-instances you can trigger are limited. Please seize the opportunity. If you cannot enter a sub-instance, you can rest overnight in the inn, but it’s not cheap.]

[Tip 3: Blue Harbor City is an instance that combines earning gold coins with entertainment. Many high-level players will do business here with casinos, dance halls, and more. However, please note that your main goal is to complete the instance. Don’t get too engrossed in other places.]

[Tip 4: Once a player enters a sub-instance, they must complete the mission to leave. As for the main instance, Blue Harbor City, the system does not impose restrictions. You can come and go freely by paying a transportation fee of 400 gold coins to the system each time.]

After reading these prompts, Zhou Qian raised an eyebrow, roughly grasping the concept of a semi-open instance.

Strictly speaking, this couldn’t be called an instance. This city, situated in the virtual game world, acted like a transit station. Players could stay here for a long time, even live and run businesses. They could also go to different trial-related sub-instances through this station.

Before reaching Rank S, Zhou Qian could only see other players in each instance he entered. But in this transit station, he saw a large number of players.

So, in addition to observing and understanding the skills players could have after Rank S and the subsequent upgrade path, he could also estimate the number of players and the scope of the game’s influence in the real world.

A while after the system prompts ended, Zhou Qian found himself in a dazzling and dreamy city.

The city had towering skyscrapers with colorful neon lights. The night sky was also colorful, making it uncertain whether it was night or if this world simply didn’t have a sun.

Standing at a crossroad, Zhou Qian watched groups of people come and go as the traffic lights changed without taking any action. He noticed that everyone was dressed ostentatiously, with multicolored hair and flamboyant clothes.

He received a flier that read—[Visit ‘I’m the Prettiest’ fashion shop, and we’ll help you fit into Blue Harbor City!]

After comparing the map and seeing that the shop was nearby, Zhou Qian tucked away the flyer with a smile without heading there immediately. Instead, he continued to stand at the crossroads, using the system to constantly read the data of passing pedestrians. He realized that half of them were NPCs, meaning Blue Harbor City was home to many NPCs, not just a transit station for players.

After observing for a while, Zhou Qian messaged [137]. [Where are you?]

[137] replied, [We probably didn’t land at the same point. Stay put. I’ll come to you.]

Zhou Qian then asked, [By the way, since you Rank God players are so powerful, do you even need to grind in instances? Can’t you just force your way through and kill all the NPCs?]

[137]: [No. There are many decryption elements in the trial instances. Killing NPCs doesn’t help. Also, my power is significantly reduced to maintain game balance.]

Zhou Qian: [Reduced? Haa, seems like you’re not up to the task.]

[137]: […?]

Zhou Qian stared at the question mark sent by 137 and chuckled. Shortly after, someone handed him a poster.

The poster was rather gory, a style that Zhou Qian greatly disliked.

After all, he had a strong aversion to blood.

The words on it read: [The Murder Exhibition is open today. We look forward to your visit!]

Chapter 92: Sense of Distance

Nol went to grab Kando hidden in his arms. With his attributes half restored, he had the confidence to temporarily split his staff.

If anything went wrong, he would designate a safe location and move everyone there.

To his surprise, he found his body stiffening like a board from tension.

Nol had dealt with the minions of the Demon King in the Black Forest before, only having brief encounters. This was his first direct exposure to the “corruption of the Demon King”. It felt more concentrated and colder than those Thousand-Hands Nightmares, like the dense fog of harsh winter.

The siren woke up from his nightmare and rushed under the bed in a panic. His strong, moist fish tail turned into two human legs, but sadly, they couldn’t support his weight. The moment the siren tried to stand up, he fell to the ground.

“Come here quickly!” he said urgently. “I can temporarily avoid it with my magic. Both of you, come closer to me!”

Nol paused in his search for Kando, signaling to Teest with a glance. The latter tightly held onto a small hunting knife, and the two approached in apparent “panic”.

The siren kicked over a bucket by the bed. The water inside spun and expanded in mid-air, turning into a large water bubble, completely isolating the three from the outside world. The siren placed both hands on the transparent bubble, with a pale blue magical power rippling across the water surface.

Nol asked, “What is this…?”

“Isolation.” The siren looked anxiously at the door, not daring to even breathe. “The corruption doesn’t have its own consciousness. As long as we don’t touch it directly, there won’t be a big problem.”

“It seems that way.” Teest looked at Nol and continued, “The houses in New Gemino are built tightly sealed. The stone walls are brushed over and over with mud and sticky algae, ready to be sealed at any moment. I’ve heard that every time the ‘White Night’ appears, everyone hides inside.”

Nol couldn’t help but inspect the dilapidated stone house they were in. The gaps in its walls were even larger than the gaps between an old smoker’s teeth. Without revealing their magical abilities, they wouldn’t be able to seal it.

Outside the window, the darkness approached rapidly, and it was now only a few miles away from them.

“…Isn’t Desolation Island far from here? Why is there a ‘White Night’? I remember a few years ago, only the coastal area of New Gemino was affected,” Teest deliberately remarked loudly.

The siren glanced at him and after a moment, murmured, “I heard the Demon King has become more active…”

“We haven’t heard about that on our side,” Teest replied with feigned seriousness.

The siren resumed his forward-facing position, striving to maintain the water bubble. “It happened a few months ago. I’m not sure about the specifics. I’m sorry.”

During their brief conversation, the corruption reached right in front of them. Darkness instantly engulfed the small stone house, extinguishing all light. Nol heard the hissing sound of the fire going out.

He pulled out a cheap magic stone from his pocket and tapped it twice. In the cosmic-like darkness, the stone illuminated an area of about a square meter.

Seeing the scene in front of him, the siren trembled, and the water bubble nearly burst.

Numerous hand-like entities pressed against the huge bubble, trying desperately to reach inside. Vague faces pressed against the transparent water membrane, struggling as if their heads were tightly wrapped in plastic bags, eager to break through.

Inside the round bubble, it seemed like hell, with dark spirits pressing hard against the light.

“It’s never been like this before!” The siren exclaimed in panic. “Do you have something from the Demon King’s minions? This is too strange—!”

“It’s possible. We’re not sure,” Teest replied “nervously”. “Kid, we deal in antiques. Who knows what we might have accidentally carried? And even if we find it, we can’t throw it out now!”

The siren’s face turned bright red, and he strained to keep the water bubble taut, repelling the hands and faces desperately pushing inward. Nol held his breath and focused intently, ready to support the siren at any moment. Meanwhile, he couldn’t help but stare at the distorted faces.

These faces, formed from darkness, had exceedingly vague features, resembling ruined death masks. They opened their mouths wide, as if silently crying out for something.

After about ten minutes, the darkness finally passed. The surrounding scenery appeared as if pulled out of muddy water, gradually clarifying but losing some vitality and color. The dark green moss in the stone cracks had dried out, turning a peculiar grayish yellow. Black spots dotted the leaves by the door, causing discomfort.

The siren’s water bubble turned a murky black gray, resembling the aftermath of dousing a charred corpse with clear water. The bubble burst with a pop, splashing onto the floor, and the siren himself collapsed.

The gray water flowed, staining the small patch of clean ground beneath their feet and dimming it considerably. Where the siren’s skin made contact with the water, it began to turn gray, sprouting dark scales.

“My god, are you okay?” Nol hurriedly helped the siren up, discreetly casting a healing spell.

“I… cough cough I’m fine, just a bit tired. I’ll be okay after some rest,” the siren weakly smiled.

“We plan to resupply in the town ahead,” Nol whispered as he guided the siren to the bed. “Considering your condition, we’ll pay for you to join a caravan to the vicinity of the Black Forest. As long as you can disguise yourself as a human throughout the journey, there shouldn’t be any issues.”

“The town ahead?” The siren raised an eyebrow.

“Balsam Town, an old place,” Teest chimed in casually. “It’s been a while since we visited. Quite nostalgic.”

“Oh, I see,” the siren replied hesitantly. “I’ve been avoiding people and haven’t been paying much attention… Thanks for your help! You saved me recently, and what I did earlier can’t repay that favor.”

The young siren’s behavior increasingly resembled that of a normal neighbor, Nol thought. This siren not only thought like a human but also exhibited some characteristics of Country C. Nol hinted at parting ways, but the siren showed no particular reaction.

Still, as Teest had said, they needed to be cautious in the face of coincidences.

In the following days, the siren remained exceptionally well-behaved. Even when served the same-tasting salted fish for every meal, he didn’t complain. In his free time, he would sit by the stone house entrance, gazing up at the four moons in the sky.

The siren introduced himself as Fischer, claiming to have previously lived in the Golden Sea in the north of the Inato Alliance. As a child, he was captured by fishermen and sold to a circus, only managing to escape recently. However, he remained tight-lipped about the details of his past.

Nol didn’t press further, presenting himself as a remarkably ordinary traveler—reading after meals, sleeping after reading, and occasionally taking walks with Teest in the nearby meadows. Fischer once cautiously inquired about the bone bed, but Nol simply said it was that way when they entered.

On the night Fischer woke up, Nol had replaced most of the bone bed frame with wood, making it look rather convincing.

……

Finally, Fischer could maintain human legs for twenty-four hours a day, and his terrifyingly large eyes could disguise as human eyes. With everything in place, the three “people” moved towards Balsam Town.

When they saw Balsam Town from a distance, Nol sensed something ominous.

There were too many crows around.

They circled above the town, and they were everywhere in the fields next to the town. They cawed hoarsely and flew away, flapping their wings as the three approached, dark like fragments of the White Night. Nol smelled an odor he shouldn’t be familiar with—the smell of decaying human flesh, a particularly peculiar sweet stench. It would stick to one’s nostrils, tongue, and clothes, lingering for days.

Teest murmured softly, “Oh no.”

Outside the town, there were intermittent, sharp wooden stakes, varying in size and crudely made, as if hastily constructed. Outside these stakes lay several particularly large corpses, impaled with pitchforks and axes. Flies and crows made them swollen and torn. Maggots writhed in the wounds, the corpses’ abdomens torn open by crows, spilling swollen entrails everywhere.

“Ogre corpses,” Nol muttered, his heart sinking in his chest.

Of course, they also saw human bodies. Sadly, they were shattered terribly, and one had to look closely to identify them. The only consolation for Nol was that there weren’t many corpses, meaning there must be survivors in Balsam Town.

“Ogres?” Fischer widened his eyes. “Let’s go! We can’t get any closer!”

“Indeed, it doesn’t look like there will be any caravans here—even if there are, they can’t leave. This town is defending itself.” Teest unusually agreed with Fischer.

“Ogres usually live in the forest, but there are only grasslands nearby.” Nol stopped. “Fischer, do you know something?”

Fischer averted his eyes, his voice a bit stiff. “I only know that ogres are terrifying. They eat any flesh… and they’re all tall and strong. We should detour.”

‘There’s probably more to it,’ Nol thought.

“But there might still be people alive in the town… They’re our kin.”

Nol put on a straight face and became “tangled”. A flicker of surprise crossed Teest’s eyes, quickly replaced by understanding.

“Yes, maybe we can help,” the Mad Monk feigned solemnity, almost comically. “And they seem to have been fighting for a while… Ogres are indeed fierce, but they’re not too bright. If things get tough, we can always run.”

“Exactly. Maybe we can find the hidden caravan in the town,” Nol said.

Fischer’s eyes grew wider—to human standards, his face was quite delicate. But whenever he widened his eyes, the distinctive look of marine life was unmistakably evident.

“No,” he whispered.

“We won’t force you. If you’re okay, we can split up,” Nol said, patting Fischer’s hair, which felt rough and dry like fish scales.

Fischer bit his lip, hesitated, and then let out a shaky breath. He bowed his head, his voice getting quieter. “…Sorry.”

“What?”

“I said I’m sorry,” Fischer said in a mosquito-like voice. “I lied to you. I didn’t escape from a circus…”

Nol raised an eyebrow.

Fischer took a deep breath and gave a resigned shake of his head. “I escaped from ‘The Manor’.”

“The Manor?” Nol asked.

“A monster organization from New Gemino with a particularly bad relationship with humans.” Fischer looked at the ground. “Its leader is a very smart ogre. Well, he shouldn’t be called an ogre. He probably evolved into something else by now. I was afraid if you knew I came from The Manor, you’d leave me behind. The Manor doesn’t tolerate traitors. If they find out about you, they’ll definitely go after you…”

“You think The Manor attacked Balsam Town,” Nol said softly.

Fischer’s head hung even lower. “Yes. Those ogre corpses had The Manor’s emblem on them, a circle like a bullseye…”

Nol recalled, indeed there was some conspicuous dark gold paint on the corpses.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Fischer said. “I didn’t mean to hide it from you, but I couldn’t stand by and watch…”

“Traitor, you dared to return,” a sinister voice emanated from the ground.

Pairs of scaly hands burst from the soil, grabbing the ankles of the three. A red line crawled up Fischer’s ankle, and his skin was instantly filled with inscriptions. His legs turned into a fish’s tail in an instant, pinning him firmly to the ground.

A look of despair flashed in Fischer’s eyes as he opened his mouth, letting out a heart-wrenching scream.

The siren’s racial skill, [Frenzied Scream].

The crows from the town burst into cawing and took to the sky. The claws around Nol’s and Teest’s ankles loosened slightly. Teest grabbed Nol, and the two ran in the opposite direction of Balsam Town. Nol looked back to see Fischer still firmly held in place, looking at them with a weak and desperate smile.

While pretending to flee, Nol reached into his robe to cast a spell. He couldn’t risk the life of someone who might be his kin.

To his surprise, he couldn’t activate his magic.

Nol grabbed Teest. “They have a magic-sealing crystal.”

Damn it, did that “Lord of The Manor” manage to get his hands on such a thing? He’s even cautious enough to use it here!

“That’s why I prioritize your safety even more,” Teest said calmly. “There are at least three adult lizardmen underground and the scent of other creatures in the distance. If they dare to use a magic-sealing crystal, they must have the power to protect it. I don’t want to fight an unprepared battle. Who knows if they have other magical artifacts.”

“But what about Fischer?”

“He might be your kin, I understand.” Teest continued in his calm voice, “You might be willing to die for your compatriots, but I don’t want to.”

Nol knew Teest’s approach was the correct and rational one. Just like when the Immortal Church burned, Young Teest chose to leave Little Piel behind rather than offer last-minute comfort.

In times like these, the Mad Monk remained the Mad Monk. Even when facing a so-called “god”, he wouldn’t sacrifice his life, loyalty, or love. Now, Nol seriously doubted if Teest ever had the latter two.

Nol almost got deceived over time. Suppressing a bitter smile, he didn’t insist on going back for Fischer and instead gripped Teest’s wrist.

“They will take him back to The Manor,” Nol stated. “We were going there to investigate anyway. This might be a good opportunity.”

“Fischer might have…”

“I know,” Nol interrupted. “Fischer might have been putting on a show with them, waiting for us to walk into their trap. I won’t contact him foolishly. We’ll just ensure his safety when we sneak into The Manor.”

“They didn’t kill Fischer immediately, so they still see his value. The mental magic of the sirens is on par with the succubi. His value alive is much higher.”

Even if it’s a disciple or a knight, to achieve his goal, he had to negotiate with the Mad Monk using the Mad Monk’s logic.

“Now that you’ve thought it through, let’s stick to this plan,” Teest replied with a smile.

“Very well,” Nol responded seriously.

After a few moments, Teest inquired, “…You’re not happy?”

“I just realized something.”

“What?”

“Since you insist on worshiping me, I will play the part of this temporary ‘god’ well,” Nol stated. “It’s better for both of us.”

The faceless idol of the Drifting Mercenary Group, the Mad Monk’s cherished gold wheel; in essence, they serve the same purpose. Those who possessed them played the role of a benevolent deity, offering solace, comfort, and warmth.

Maybe this was the most appropriate distance.

After hearing Nol’s answer, Teest remained silent for a long time. Nol originally thought Teest would jest or treat it as casual conversation.

But Teest just silently gripped Nol’s hand and didn’t utter a word.

They ran towards the corrupted gray plains, as if heading towards the rotten edge of the world. Soon after, both their breaths and figures vanished, melting into the leaden sky.

No one noticed their return.

……

Bissus was located between the Shidina Federation and the Fini Empire.

It was an exceptionally large island nation, shaped like a spindle-shaped fish. The climate here was warm, with all four seasons resembling spring. It was said that at the dawn of the world, the Goddess of Life Tilia planted the first tree in Bissus, introducing the first freshwater river to the Tahe continent, marking the beginning of life.

To this day, this place remained a sacred land for the Temple of Life.

“You’re leaving so soon?!”

In the sacred land, a young bishop chased after Knight Eugene, his head dripping with sweat. “The Pope’s reward ceremony isn’t over yet, and in two days the ‘Festival of New Green’ will have its first exhibition…”

“Such events are the same with or without me.” Eugene smiled. “I am the sword and shield of the Goddess. A sword and shield should be where they belong, not drowning in a crowd of revelers.”

“But this is your merit…”

Eugene shook his head. “You can reward Old Bishop Gaines of Grape Collar. In my eyes, that bishop deserves more credit.”

The young bishop seemed slightly deflated, as if holding back a sigh. “Then you…”

“I need to quickly head over to New Gemino.” Eugene said, “By the grace of the Goddess, if my guess is right, things will be quite ‘lively’ over there.”

The Master of Paradise would surely send someone to investigate. “How Paradise deals with The Manor” would serve as an important reference for “how humans deal with Paradise”.

He hoped they’d send someone interesting. The power of “The Manor” was in no way inferior to “Paradise”.

As he was lost in thought, the Master of Paradise was personally tailing those lizardmen.

To say tailing might not be entirely accurate. To avoid the anti-magic crystal’s effect, Nol used an old trick. He let undead rats discreetly follow—the rat would leave markers and Nol would track it.

But when they reached a certain location, the undead rats gathered confusedly. The trail of the lizardmen had vanished.

These creatures seemed to evaporate, leaving no trace. There was no sign of any magic at the scene, only some residual warmth on the grass.

“A remarkable technique.”

Teest pulled up a withered blade of grass, smelled it, then licked it. “No illusion concealment, no teleportation magic. This place is too clean. I can’t determine their method.”

“Honey, what’s your plan now? Plan for the long-term or…?”

“One of the undead rats spat a bone on Fischer.”

Nol’s expression was grim. “I can faintly sense his location.”

Besides magic, Nol considered the possibility of “flying creatures/magic flying tools supporting several people”.

But the scent was too far from them. Even dragons couldn’t fly that fast—they arrived about five minutes late, and Fischer was already tens of thousands of miles away.

What exactly is “The Manor”?

The author has something to say:

The two are having a spat (?), haha.

They just can’t have the smooth sailing that their predecessors next door had… The importance of mental health… (just kidding)

Kinky Thoughts:

I wouldn’t call all of Nian Zhong’s previous CPs having smooth sailing… (especially Tang Yibu and Ruan Xian) haha.

Chapter 91: White Night

[You’re very kind-hearted,] Teest said.

When he said this, they were resting in an abandoned stone house.

Almost all the usable furniture inside the house had been moved out. Nol summoned some bones and temporarily constructed a bone bed. Reluctantly, Teest pulled some straw and fabric from his waist pouch. Nol soaked them thoroughly with clear water. After a bit of hustle, the siren was placed on a relatively clean bed by the two of them.

After some treatment, the siren’s fever subsided. He was still in a daze, but he looked much better.

It was still pouring rain outside. Teest lit the fireplace. He simply boiled some herbal soup to ward off the cold, muttering his dissatisfaction, [I don’t know how you see it, but in the Tahe that I know of, the synonym for ‘coincidence’ is ‘trouble’.]

[This isn’t kindness,] Nol responded mentally. [You know, with Kando here, I could have sent him straight back to the Lost Tower.]

[But you didn’t, which is great. You don’t trust him either.]

Teest tasted the amber-colored soup, grimaced for a few seconds, and added some honey and pepper to the soup. [Don’t tell me we’re taking him with us.]

[We’ll see when he wakes up.] Nol sighed.

On the scarcely populated prairie, in terrible weather, with neighbors yearning for Paradise, what were the chances they’d meet by coincidence? In this world with “gods”, Nol became highly alert.

The reason he was willing to save this siren was twofold—

First, on the off chance that this was truly an unfortunate neighbor, he couldn’t just watch him die here; second… if this was a trap set by the enemy, he needed to see what they were up to*.

*What kind of medicine is inside the gourd. Metaphor expressing doubt or suspicion about someone’s real intentions or plans.

[How compassionate,] Teest snorted but said nothing more.

Inside the dim room, under the warm light, Teest’s exposed neck and collarbone glistened wetly. Nol couldn’t help but stare at him for a while… Regarding the treatment of this siren, the Mad Monk compromised once again.

Nol slowly removed his cloak and applied a few drying spells. He moved behind the squatting Teest and draped the cloak over him. Teest’s initially damp white hair became dry and fluffy upon contact with the cloak.

Squatting there, Teest looked up at Nol, raising an eyebrow slightly.

[The ‘Temporary God’ of the Drifting Mercenary Group gives blessings. I shouldn’t be worse than them,] Nol said, looking down. [Thank you for understanding, Teest.]

“Water…” At that moment, the siren on the bed let out a dry moan.

Nol prepared a cup of saltwater, filled it in a leaf cup, and brought it to the siren’s lips. The siren greedily drank it all up and took a long breath. He opened his eyes, taking in the two of them with pupils that were dilated.

“Thank you for saving me. Who are you two?” the siren politely asked, his voice weak but still alluring.

“By the Goddess, you speak the common language?” Nol feigned surprise. “We’re both from Old Gemino, traveling together. You can call me Ross.”

The siren was silent for half a minute and then gave a weak smile. “Yes, I learned the common language when I was sold from circus to circus.”

Nol frowned. “Those people are simply inhuman! Kid, do you have a place to go? Where were you headed?”

“I escaped from New Gemino,” the siren whispered, his voice filled with suppressed fear. “I… I want to go to the Black Forest…”

“Black Forest?” Teest, all wrapped up in his cloak, tilted his head and interjected. “For non-humans, Shiva is more suitable, right? There’s a large saltwater lake in Shiva, and both mermaids and sirens have their tribes there. The Black Forest only has danger and death.”

The siren averted his eyes, staring at the moldy, rotting ceiling of the stone house. “I have friends in the Black Forest. I must go.” After saying that, he remained silent, his expression a bit tense.

Nol and Teest exchanged a secretive glance.

“We’re heading west and can’t accompany you. But we can give you some salt, smoked fish, and herbs,” Nol said. “Can you manage on your own?”

“Yes, of course!” The siren perked up. “I… I was just too hungry, and there were no fish nearby. Thank you. Thank you both, kind souls!”

“Then that’s settled,” Teest said hurriedly, as if afraid Nol would change his mind.

The room grew quiet. Teest poured two bowls of herbal soup and handed one to Nol.

Holding the bowl, the aromatic scent of the herbs wafted around. The warmth of the wooden bowl seemed almost magical, enough to dispel the dampness and chill surrounding them.

Nol stared at the flickering fireplace, where two branches with smoked fish added to them sat, prepared crudely, most likely for the siren.

“…You two are from Old Gemino. Are you heading to New Gemino?” As Nol finished his second bowl of herbal soup, the siren asked softly.

“Yes,” Teest, poking at the fire, replied tersely.

Old and New Gemino were the results of the split of the great nation of Gemino. Now, they were two evenly matched nations, but the bloodline of their people remained connected. From time to time, people crossed the border to visit dear friends or family on the other side.

Currently, with tensions high in New Gemino, only people from Old Gemino would still make the journey regardless of the circumstances.

“You saved me, so I have to be honest.” The siren turned hesitantly and said, “Stay away from the coast of New Gemino, especially near the Desolation Islands. It’s very dangerous for humans there right now… Other places should be fine, I guess.”

Teest responded impatiently, “Everyone knows it’s dangerous near Desolation Island. This isn’t news.”

Hearing this, the siren moved slightly, struggling to sit up.

“No!” he said emotionally. “It’s not just the Demon King’s corruption. There… The monsters are hunting humans. Young people like you are in great danger—cough, cough!”

“Okay, calm down. We’ll be careful,” Nol reassured, playing the red face*.

*One sings with a red face, the other with a white face (一个唱红脸一个唱白脸). Idiom referring to one person acting as the “bad guy” while the other acts as the “good guy” or the mediator (aka good cop, bad cop).

The siren lay down again, showing signs of fever. After just a couple of bites of the grilled fish, he fell into a deep sleep.

Nol sat down beside Teest with a blanket. Both of them watched the flames in the stove, the firewood crackling, reminding them of the night in the hunter’s cabin.

[What do you think?] Nol asked in his mind.

[I shouldn’t have given him the fish.] Teest was upset. [He bit into it. Now we can’t eat it. What a waste.]

[…I mean, what do you think about the current situation?] Nol laughed.

[Same as always. “Coincidence” means “trouble”,] Teest said. [If he thinks it’s fine to leave, let him. Relying on a stranger for the truth is one of the dumbest things.]

[I get it.] Nol pursed his lips. [I’m just worried that even if he doesn’t recognize us, he might be heading for Paradise.]

[Once he’s gone, I’ll inform Lynn and the others to keep an eye out.]

[Impressive. You’re becoming sneakier by the day.] There was a peculiar satisfaction in Teest’ face.

[No choice. I’m the leader of Paradise.] Nol gave a wry smile. [If I make a mistake, more than just me will suffer. I can’t trust this siren, just as I can’t trust the Temple of Life.]

Regarding the rumored “monster stronghold”, he had to see it for himself.

Teest looked intently at Nol, slowly leaning his head on Nol’s shoulder.

[Do you trust me?] Teest’s thought was gentle as cotton.

Nol didn’t respond immediately. His shoulder tensed for a few seconds, then relaxed. Finally, his cheek rested on Teest’s hair. [For you, is “honesty” part of “faith”?]

[Who would lie to God?]

[Then, I trust you.] Nol closed his eyes, feeling the warmth of the fire and his body.

Teest shifted in surprise. [Just like that?]

[If you ever betray me, it would actually be easier to let you go.] Nol, still with his eyes closed, whispered, [You wouldn’t make it easy for me to give up, Teest.]

[You’re right.] Teest nudged Nol’s neck.

Nol peeked, looking closely at the silvery hair.

…He didn’t want to be right.

If Teest never betrays him in the future, would he hold on tighter and tighter, finding it impossible to let go?

Unfortunately, this question was beyond the scope of games and systems, and Nol couldn’t find an answer.

He closed his eyes again, listening to the storm outside the window.

……

On the way to Bissus, the weather was fine, and the sky was clear without a cloud in sight. The autumn sky seemed particularly vast and distant.

They successfully obtained the “Festival of New Green”. As involved parties, the bishop and Eugene both had to go to Bissus—the headquarters of the Temple of Life—to report upwards and present this rare treasure to the Pope.

“Monsters are just monsters. Having many just makes them a mob. Dealing with Paradise was easier than I thought.” On the carriage, the old bishop chuckled and said, “Their leader is a bit rough around the edges but quite simpleminded, probably the kind who hates evil fervently. Given time, perhaps he can be of use to me.”

“Simpleminded?” Eugene mulled over the description.

The old bishop leisurely sipped his hot pear tea. “Their Manager met with us directly, and he and his knights even took on human forms. The magical tools they hold are just above average, all exaggerated in appearance.”

“As soon as they had some information on the Temple, they immediately threatened us and gave it up… Speaking of the disturbances caused by monsters at the New Gemino border, his response was also quite straightforward.”

By this point, the old man narrowed his eyes, whether savoring the hot tea or contemplating the simplicity of the Paradise Manager.

Idiot.

Eugene hid a sneer.

The old man had been too comfortable in Grape Collar for too long, pampered daily, with his sense of crisis completely eroded.

“Do you think Paradise doesn’t recognize valuables and would trade gold for milk, like some primitive tribe?” he asked brightly, as if genuinely concerned about the other’s opinion.

“Of course, it might also be because Paradise’s base is adjacent to Grape Collar. Perhaps they fear the might of the Goddess and don’t dare to act recklessly.” The old bishop missed the underlying coldness. “I’ve seen many such organizations. A little favor can earn a lot in return.”

“Thank you for the insight. I’ve spent years battling outside and am not familiar with such matters.” Eugene lamented, “I’m used to treating monsters as enemies… I once thought Paradise was hiding its incompetence to safely expand near Grape Collar.”

“It seems that when it comes to diplomacy, I see monsters as too cunning. I need to learn from your confidence.”

The old bishop’s expression stiffened for a moment. “You flatter me, Lord Eugene.”

“You’re seventy-nine this year, having served the Goddess for sixty years straight.” Eugene poured himself a cup of tea and said gently, “Now that we’ve retrieved the ‘Festival of New Green’, the Pope will surely reward us both… Have you thought about how you’ll enjoy this wealth?”

“’The brilliance of jewels can only blind people’s eyes.’ I wish to continue following the Goddess.” The old bishop’s smile was somewhat bitter.

“The path to the Goddess requires gold… Properly managing wealth is also a virtue.” Eugene took a sip, looking increasingly cheerful. “I recently returned from Whitebird City, where the bishop’s position is vacant. It’s also a bustling trade hub with beautiful scenery. I think you’ll like it. The new lord there is young and unlikely to cause any trouble. With your wealth and experience, you can surely spread the glory of the Goddess throughout Whitebird City.”

The old bishop’s smile faltered before plastering back onto his face.

“I appreciate your consideration,” he said with difficulty. “Once I receive the reward, I’ll request a transfer.”

“Your devotion is touching.” Eugene’s smile was as warm as a spring breeze in March. “The Great Goddess Tilia will bless you until the very end.”

“Praise the Goddess. We should dedicate our complete loyalty.” The old bishop put down his tea, laughing more bitterly than if he were crying.

For sixty years, he climbed from a small church in a border town to the capital, earning his place. But what of it? Facing a Chosen One, fortunes could change in an instant—even if this Chosen One was only in his twenties.

Eugene Malloy.

Even among the many Chosen Ones in the Temple of Life, Knight Eugene stood out. Every clergy member at the core knew of his prophetic heroism. What was more, he was a devout believer through and through. Everyone said that once this Pope’s term ends, Knight Eugene was almost certain to be the next.

Who would be foolish enough to offend a potential future Pope?

The old bishop closed his eyes, seemingly aging five years in an instant.

……

The storm subsided, and Nol stirred his head, finding himself and Teest tightly entwined—both of them were covered with a single blanket, their heads stacked together, fitting like two Lego pieces.

The surroundings were too warm, and Nol, deep in thought, eventually fell asleep. But it didn’t matter. If that siren had any ill intentions, the Mad Monk would definitely sense the murderous intent first… right?

Looking at Teest, who was softly snoring, Nol became uncertain again. He tentatively gathered a bit of aggressive magic and gently waved it in front of Teest’s nose.

Almost instantly, Teest tensed up, his sharp golden eyes scanning over and almost piercing Nol.

“It’s not time for morning prayers yet…”

Realizing it was Nol causing mischief, Teest clicked his tongue in displeasure. He held Nol with one hand, seemingly ready to sleep again.

“I need to check on that siren,” Nol said.

“I’d rather turn him into pickled fish.” Teest stretched lazily.

He turned his head and placed a light kiss on Nol’s forehead, not caring if the siren was watching.

“Morning prayers in advance,” Teest muttered.

The kiss was warm and dry, just like this clear morning. Nol’s gaze followed Teest’s forehead, and on an impulse, he also leaned in for a kiss.

Teest froze in surprise, and his eyebrows almost shot up.

“A reciprocal response,” Nol said.

“You are truly cruel.” Teest rubbed his forehead, murmuring sadly, “What if I get used to it? If you’re not around in the future, I’ll never have a response.”

Nol opened his mouth, searching for words. “Maybe…”

“Mm, what?”

“Maybe I can think of another solution.” Nol’s words came out before he could think.

Teest smiled.

It was that satisfied, radiant smile, slightly blinding. It forced Nol to pull his cloak over most of his face.

“Um… um…” Behind them, the siren mumbled in his sleep. “The black… black tide… is coming…”

Sweat covered his face, and the damp sheet clung to him. “The smell of the tide. The smell of the tide! Save me mom and dad…”

Nol quickly stood up, shaking the siren, who seemed to be haunted by a nightmare. “Hey, hey! Wake up. It’s okay. It’s safe here.”

The siren’s eyes opened wide.

His pupils, already large, were now utterly dark, as if two deep black pearls were embedded in his eyes. He grabbed the front of Nol’s robe, his voice raspy and strange. “Not safe!”

The siren screamed. “Not safe. It’s not safe here! The black tide is coming. The Demon King’s corruption is coming!”

“Landus, help!” Unable to break free, Nol called for Teest.

But Teest didn’t immediately come to his aid.

“That’s unfortunate.” Teest sighed.

Nol turned around to see Teest standing at the entrance of the stone house, looking serious.

“The Demon King’s corruption is truly coming. As expected of New Gemino. It’s so exciting,” Teest said. “The sirens at sea call it the ‘Black Tide’, but the humans here prefer ‘White Night’.”

Nol didn’t have the luxury of worrying about the siren’s emotional nuances. He pulled himself free and ran to the door—

The just-risen sun vanished, and darkness slid across the horizon like a displaced night. The scenery of the plains seemed torn apart and swallowed by this darkness, disappearing quickly in front of him.

Nol felt an all-too-familiar and ominous cold sensation.

…It was the aura of the Demon King.

Escape From the Asylum Ch72

Chapter 72

Shirley turned into stardust, sinking into the swamp, while Sarah was buried in a sea of flames. Many witches and townsfolk learned the truth. Although many would be immersed in grief for a long time, and even though the impact of radiation from the Mirror of All Things would take time to fade, and human genetics might be irreversibly affected…

A conspiracy had been thwarted.

[Player Zhou Qian’s Rank: B → S]

[HP: 8,000 → 50,000]

[MP: 8,000 → 50,000]

[Skill Points: 1,000]

[“Rib of God” Unlocked Function: Summon Bone Spirit; the Bone Spirit is nourished by the player’s health; each summoning requires sacrificing health.]

After reviewing his level-up prompt, an intense light shone directly above Zhou Qian. The light was so bright he had to squint. When he blinked, he found himself in a high-tech room.

The familiar metallic door of the room soon opened, and a familiar figure walked in—it was Ryan in a white lab coat, looking part doctor and part researcher.

What’s going on?

Zhou Qian frowned slightly. Ryan approached him and reached out his hand. Zhou Qian didn’t reciprocate, pulling his hand away. Ryan didn’t seem to mind and pulled back.

“Was it you who sent us to that world?” Zhou Qian asked. “There was a Ryan there. You’re also Ryan. Are you Ryans from different timelines?”

“Yes. This is a multi-dimensional universe. The universe has countless parallel time-spaces, so there are countless Ryans,” Ryan explained. “You were sent to universe S7889. That world was heading towards destruction due to Sarah’s experiment, which would eventually affect other time-spaces, even posing a threat here. We sent you there to correct the history and change the tragedy. Congratulations on completing your mission.”

Zhou Qian remained expressionless and non-committal. Soon after, Ryan handed him a small orb, resembling a globe with lands and oceans. He could hold it in one hand.

As Zhou Qian took it, Ryan said, “God was displeased with the chaos on the land. He commanded the waters to gather, revealing the land. Thus, the waters formed the oceans, and dry land emerged. Under God’s guidance, fruits and vegetables flourished. Now, having saved the world, God grants you the ‘Continent’.”

[Player obtains the item: ‘Continent’]

[Function: ?]

[Grade: ?]

After gathering all the rewards and dropped loot boxes, the surroundings faded from Zhou Qian’s view.

The last message he saw read: [Zhou Qian, having passed the gambler’s evaluation, gained the title: Nightmare Commander.]

[Gambler’s postscript: I was watching your videos on the side, and, given your mastery of dreams and the fact that others couldn’t make you lose yourself in them, I felt this title suited you. You’re the master of dreams, the commander of all within them. Even though you might not always listen to me… I hope you’ll be careful and choose a safer path.]

After reading the postscript, Zhou Qian found himself back in Zone 1 of the Spring Hill Mental Asylum.

It was late at night. The main lights in the ward were off, with only his bedside lamp still on. Beside him, Qi Liuxing was already asleep, probably tired. Zhou Qian leaned back for a moment, then got up and retrieved a tie from his wardrobe.

As Qi Liuxing dozed, he felt a shift on the bed.

“Hm? Zhou Qian, are you back?” He yawned and instinctively turned on the light, indeed seeing Zhou Qian.

But Qi Liuxing wasn’t sure what Zhou Qian was planning. He moved to Zhou Qian’s side of the bed, very close.

Meanwhile, Zhou Qian’s gaze was unusual. He stared at him coldly, and his expression seemed malicious.

Suddenly, Qi Liuxing noticed the tie wrapped around his own neck, as if Zhou Qian was trying to strangle him!

“What the fuck, Zhou Qian?”

Qi Liuxing snapped awake, but his gaze wasn’t defensive—it was concerned. He patted Zhou Qian’s face.

“Are you alright? Under an illusion? Wake up, Zhou Qian! You’re out of the game and back in reality!”

Hearing those words, the cold and murderous look in Zhou Qian’s eyes gradually faded. He suddenly smiled at Qi Liuxing with a mischievous glint appearing in his eyes. “Ah, didn’t scare you?”

Qi Liuxing was angry. “Zhou Qian, you’re sick!”

“Not really. I was just practicing,” Zhou Qian replied, raising an eyebrow, still in a strangling posture.

Qi Liuxing: “?”

Zhou Qian: “I was thinking… we should both hurt each other a bit!”

Qi Liuxing: “……???”

Zhou Qian continued, “I want to sneak into Zone 2. Going to Zone X from here is too difficult. But Zone 2 is very close to there.”

After a three-second pause, Qi Liuxing realized. “You mean—we hurt each other, even attempt to kill, then both of us are considered to have worsened conditions, and both of us get locked up in Zone 2? Don’t tell me… you want to find Bai Zhou?”

Zhou Qian remained silent and released the tie, leisurely going back to his bed. He seemed to think of something and looked at his wrist, but there was no system panel response—

No messages from anyone.

Qi Liuxing said, “If you go to Zone 2, you can’t order hotel takeout anymore. It’s off-limits. The management there is very strict. You won’t be free.”

Zhou Qian replied, “In theory, yes. But currently, Dr. Li is my gambler. I just need to win him over.”

“You’re crazy!” Qi Liuxing frowned, looking very serious.

Zhou Qian, however, was seriously planning. “Of course, I also need to notify Officer Chen. In case of any accidents, he should try to get me out.”

Qi Liuxing: “……”

“It’s not as simple as you think. While I do intend to find Bai Zhou, that’s not my only goal. If we can make it to Zone 2 and Zone X, we can get closer to some of the core players in this game. Given the vast scope of this game, players are not limited to just this asylum. However, looking at the current player matching situation, the probability of people from one hospital being matched together seems quite high. This might be for easier management and control.”

“For instance, the doctor who extracted Zhu Qiang is likely some sort of manager placed in the real world by the game. Even if he isn’t a manager, he probably knows more details than we do. In any case—”

Zhou Qian summarized, “Now that we know the pattern and understand that there’s a high probability of encountering high-end players in Zone 2 and Zone X, we should go there to scout out their details in advance. Only by knowing yourself and your enemy can you win every battle*, right?”

*Line from The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

Qi Liuxing looked skeptical. “Really? If I go to Zone 2 with you for the investigation, you won’t drag me into Zone X to find Bai Zhou with you, right? I’m making it clear; I definitely won’t go to a place like Zone X!”

“Of course not!” Zhou Qian said earnestly. “About Zhu Qiang, you know the situation. He was in Zone 2 of this hospital before. So a doctor in Zone 2 definitely has a problem, right? Think about it. He probably helped many murderers escape punishment. We must find him. You are an agent of justice, after all!”

“Hmm… you make a good point,” Qi Liuxing admitted, getting serious. “That doctor is truly evil! Maybe…”

“Why hesitate? That’s not like you. You should be more aware, my Brother Sword God,” Zhou Qian advised before heading to the bathroom for a shower.

A moment later, after Zhou Qian finished his shower, Qi Liuxing seemed to have made up his mind.

He declared, “Zhou Qian, I’ve decided. Regardless of whether I’ll meet all the gods in the game, I don’t care! But regarding Zhu Qiang… if someone in this hospital is helping him evade punishment, it’s definitely abnormal! I’m willing to dive deep into this with you! One must enter the tiger’s den to catch its cubs!”

Zhou Qian nodded appreciatively. He towel-dried his hair, approached Qi Liuxing, and said, “Good.”

Qi Liuxing, filled with newfound enthusiasm, asked, “So now we—”

Zhou Qian, yawning, got into bed. “Now? Now it’s bedtime, kid.”

Qi Liuxing: “…You woke me up just to sleep again?”

“Who told you not to wait for me? So heartless.” Zhou Qian yawned again.

“I did wait for you.” Qi Liuxing explained seriously, “I accidentally fell asleep. Look, I didn’t even change my clothes. I didn’t really plan to sleep.”

Zhou Qian smiled contentedly. “Mm. Good job, Xiao Qi!”

Qi Liuxing asked, “By the way, I’ve leveled up to A. What about you?”

“S.” Zhou Qian yawned for the third time and was immediately awakened by Qi Liuxing, who grabbed his collar.

“You’re already at S? You’ve only done three side missions, and you’re at S?” Qi Liuxing was genuinely shocked.

“So, grinding the ultimate hidden mission in the instance is quite useful, huh!”

Zhou Qian pushed Qi Liuxing’s hand away and snuggled back into his bed covers. “Alright, time to sleep. We can discuss things tomorrow. If you can’t sleep, ponder over how we can harm each other convincingly. Remember to make it look real!”

Qi Liuxing: “………”

……

The next morning, as usual, Li Xuehai came for his rounds.

What was different this time was that he not only came alone but also closed the door behind him, clearly indicating he had something private to discuss with Zhou Qian.

However, he didn’t exclude Qi Liuxing, probably because he knew that he too was a player in the game.

When Li Xuehai arrived, Zhou Qian was deeply engrossed in various studies on his system panel.

After being promoted to Rank S, many new features were added to his system, and he was trying to figure them all out. Moreover, he hadn’t found the right opportunity to test the newly added “Bone Spirit” skill.

When Zhou Qian noticed Li Xuehai closing the door, he glanced at him and then continued with his system panel.

It seemed he had an inkling of what Li Xuehai wanted to discuss, perhaps thinking that some of his in-game actions were too reckless.

So, before Li Xuehai could even start, Zhou Qian preemptively showed an expression of “I’m not listening to any nagging*”.

*(不听不听王八念经) Internet buzzword referring to refusing to listen to another person’s point of view. It became a meme of basically psyduck covering its ears

Upon seeing Zhou Qian’s reaction, Li Xuehai shook his head, sighed softly, and then seriously said, “Zhu Qiang from Zone 2 has died. The cause of death was a sudden heart attack.”

Zhou Qian raised an eyebrow, indicating that he already knew, and then continued to look at his system panel without any expression.

Li Xuehai glanced at him and asked, “I suddenly remembered that the day after Dong Xiang died, you asked me if many people had recently died in the hospital. After reviewing your video playback, I understood what you meant. Why didn’t you say it directly?”

“How could I say it directly? Wouldn’t that make you think I’ve gone even crazier?” Zhou Qian replied candidly. “You’re so old-fashioned, having never played online games. You’d certainly think it’s all a hallucination of mine.”

Qi Liuxing, hearing these potentially offensive words, quickly shot Zhou Qian a warning glance.

But Zhou Qian, with his head lowered, didn’t see it at all.

Qi Liuxing frowned immediately, only to hear Zhou Qian laughing. “Dr. Li wouldn’t be so petty!”

Qi Liuxing: “……”

Li Xuehai: “……”

All the good and bad words were spoken by Zhou Qian alone.

“Speaking of which…” Having probably finished researching the system panel, Zhou Qian finally looked up at Li Xuehai. “So, who was the person that got Zhu Qiang out?”

“I’ve checked. Regarding Zhu Qiang’s mental assessment report, it was personally signed off by the deputy president in the end. But the assessment process wasn’t conducted by him alone. The hospital has a strict procedure, and many doctors are involved.”

“Zhu Qiang went through three evaluations. The deputy director, director, and deputy president all submitted a report. Everyone judged that he indeed had mental issues. Zhu Qiang was confined to a single room in Zone 2, which isn’t much different from a prison. Actually, Zhou Qian…”

Pausing for a moment, Li Xuehai’s voice became graver. “Zhou Qian, the deputy president, is my teacher. I can vouch for his character with my integrity. If you think he’s an accomplice, then perhaps the whole hospital is corrupt.”

Reaching this point, Li Xuehai’s gaze turned even more serious, meeting Zhou Qian’s probing look, and added, “Including me.”

Zhou Qian blinked several times and then stared intently at Li Xuehai. “I certainly don’t think you have any issues. Right now, you’re my fellow gambler. We share glory and disgrace. However…”

After pondering for a moment, Zhou Qian continued, “If there’s nothing wrong with the doctors, then Zhu Qiang indeed had mental issues. Hmm… After winning some bets, he had some value and could afford a lawyer, so getting himself out of prison is plausible. But it also means that the game affects gamblers’ mental states. Dr. Li…”

Zhou Qian’s tone became slightly heavy. “I think, under these circumstances, you should be more cautious.”

“Don’t worry. If I ever notice anything wrong with myself, I’ll have my colleagues handle it in time. As for what this game is all about… we’ll investigate it together later on.”

Li Xuehai turned around, ready to leave.

Zhou Qian stopped him. “You haven’t asked anything today.”

To which Li Xuehai replied, “There’s not much to ask. Actually, I think… this game might be beneficial for you.”

“Oh? How so?” Zhou Qian inquired curiously.

Li Xuehai explained, “Although in the game, I don’t agree with many of your actions, thinking you’re too reckless, I’ve noticed… this game stimulates your emotions. I’ve conducted many emotional stimulation activities with you before. I even hypnotized you, but the results weren’t satisfactory.”

Zhou Qian seemed to find something amusing and chuckled, “So you mean, gamblers might go insane because of me, but I’m becoming a normal person through the game?”

“It’s just my current assessment,” Li Xuehai said. “Haven’t you noticed? You have low self-esteem. But often, this game seems to push you to be a hero. That level of immersion isn’t comparable to other ordinary treatments.”

“Is that so…” Zhou Qian looked at Li Xuehai. “Then let me ask you another question.”

“Go ahead.” Li Xuehai sat back down on the sofa.

Zhou Qian questioned, “I mentioned before that I saw a dragon, and you believed it was a hallucination. What about now? Do you finally believe me?”

But Li Xuehai firmly shook his head. “No. I still don’t believe it truly exists.”

“Why?” Zhou Qian pressed.

“It’s simple, because this is the real world,” Li Xuehai said. “You all load your consciousness into the game. That’s a unique space. If a dragon appears in the game, it’s no big deal. But in reality… are you telling me that during that time, a dragon appeared at this hospital every night? But why is it that only you saw it, and no one else did?”

Before Zhou Qian could reply, Li Xuehai posed another question. “Unless you’re telling me that even now, you’re actually in the game. And I am just an NPC within your game.”

Upon hearing this, Zhou Qian didn’t react. However, Qi Liuxing, beside him, jumped up in surprise. “Is that possible? Could it be…”

He suddenly turned to look at the pillow beside him, as if someone was there, and asked earnestly, “Little brother, are you real? If what I perceive as reality is also a game… are you an NPC in the game? If that’s the case… where is true reality?”

Zhou Qian, who heard this: “……”

Zhou Qian still didn’t speak, but Li Xuehai, looking at Qi Liuxing, tried to reassure him. “For now, relax. I don’t think that’s likely. I clearly know my life’s journey. Apart from this game, I’ve never encountered any supernatural creatures or phenomena. I can’t possibly be an NPC. As for that dragon… we might need further investigation.”

……

A few minutes later, Li Xuehai left.

Zhou Qian reopened his system panel and began researching something. Qi Liuxing, who was still slightly shocked by Li Xuehai’s speculations, felt that maybe all his memories from birth to now were false.

He turned pale and went on a long ramble to Zhou Qian, and seeing no response, eventually went over and tugged at Zhou Qian’s sleeve. “What do you think? Why aren’t you speaking?”

“Yes, yes, it’s all a game. We’re all toys for the gods.” Zhou Qian yawned. “Maybe the gods are placing bets on who will be the next US president!”

“Yeah! That’s possible!” Qi Liuxing said, analyzing seriously. “We’re just toys for the gods’ amusement. Who knows how much the bet regarding the US president is worth. Wait… do gods use money too?”

Hearing this, Zhou Qian finally couldn’t help but laugh.

Qi Liuxing realized something and frowned, looking at Zhou Qian with dissatisfaction. “Are you making fun of me?”

“Not at all. Just a little joke,” Zhou Qian said seriously. “I believe everything is real. Reality is still reality. It’s just that dragon…”

Zhou Qian suddenly stopped speaking here.

Qi Liuxing, not getting a continuation, immediately inquired, “What? What about the dragon?”

Soon, Qi Liuxing saw Zhou Qian look up and smile at him.

It was a rare, genuine smile from Zhou Qian.

But Qi Liuxing, used to Zhou Qian’s teasing, instinctively stepped back.

Then he saw Zhou Qian raise his left hand and point to the watch on his wrist with his right hand. “137 has contacted me. I’ll ask him if he knows anything about the dragon.”

“Uh… so who exactly is 137?” Qi Liuxing asked, clearly confused. “Zhou Qian, there’s something off about you. Weren’t you looking for Bai Zhou? I spent all night thinking of ways we could hurt each other. Are you going to act or not? Hey, where are you going? To chat with 137? Why are you avoiding me? Why are you so happy that 137 contacted you? Aren’t you looking for Bai Zhou anymore?”

……

Earlier in the ward, while Qi Liuxing was rambling, Zhou Qian opened his trade notifications and saw a message from [137]: [Are you there?]

Seeing such a question, Zhou Qian instinctively wanted to reply with— [Not here.]

However, after typing them, he deleted it.

Without replying, he went out for a walk.

After reaching the cafeteria’s small garden, Zhou Qian entered a green-shaded corridor before leisurely opening the system panel again, seeing a message sent by [137] half a minute ago—

[You’ve reached Rank S. Now you can take on disciples but can no longer have a master.]

Zhou Qian frowned at this message, then checked the trade notifications and saw his purchase requests being covered by trade notifications one by one, all initiated by [137].

[137] was offering him the items he was looking to purchase, and the price for each was [0 gold coins].

It seemed like 137 was helping Zhou Qian clear out his shopping cart.

Quickly, Zhou Qian clicked on all the notifications, accepting all the items in order, immediately revealing his “online” status. However, he still didn’t reply to any of the messages.

After a while, when [137] generous gestures ceased, perhaps fearing that Zhou Qian would log out of the trading hall after his shopping cart was emptied, [137] sent another message: [Zhou Qian, do you know everything now?]

Zhou Qian continued to remain silent.

A bit later, a message finally came from the other side: [Are you angry?]

Zhou Qian: “……….”

Staring at the message, Zhou Qian narrowed his eyes, only to receive another message. [You’ve reached Rank S, and the system has activated the ‘Prospective Teammate’ feature for you. I just used that feature to request to add you as my ‘Prospective Teammate’.]

[Why don’t you accept? This way, it’s like we’ve added each other as friends, making it much easier to communicate.]

Chapter 155: Enmity

Yin Ci’s clothes were completely destroyed. Su Si called his black horse and hastily searched for a set of clothes. Just as he handed out the clothes, the ground trembled. Shi Jingzhi almost lost his balance and nearly fell onto Yin Ci.

The ashes of the True Immortal were blown away by the wind as the ground continued to tremble. The previously flat wasteland visibly sank. The huge Hanging Tree was destroyed by the poisonous fire, causing the mountains to shake, the valley to slowly shift, and the ground to collapse to varying degrees. This tremor was subtle but noticeable, like a low rumble coming from the center of the earth.

The Hanging Shadow Sword was destroyed, yet Yin Ci still carefully picked up the hilt, holding the half-broken sword.

“Get another sword. Better to be safe.” Su Si helped up the dazed Shi Jingzhi, hesitating to speak. “I know a bit about magic too. Sect Master Shi isn’t like the Hanging Tree. If you get seriously injured now…”

“Not only will I die, but I might also endanger him. I know.” Yin Ci smiled. “…I could never hurt him.”

The monks pretended to hear nothing, while Su Si rolled his eyes in response.

The poison of the Ling Sect was potent; Qu Duanyun only managed to stay conscious and couldn’t move at all. Jiang Youyue’s mouth was stained with blood. His earlier refined demeanor was gone; his face was dark and intimidating. He sat on the ground, his wide sleeves covered in mud, showing no intention of resisting.

Seeing Yin Ci approach, Jiang Youyue looked up, his eyes filled with anger. The martial artists around had witnessed a dramatic resurrection, and fearing the resurrected man, they unconsciously stepped back.

“So that’s how… It’s the principle of grafting. Did you turn that Child of Desire into a new Hanging Tree?”

Jiang Youyue bared his blood-stained teeth, smiling maliciously.

“You connected his meridians to yours, sharing his vital qi to extend your life. But the source isn’t unlimited. He’s still struggling.”

“Under the curse of the Twin Roots, the blood master and the blood guide live and die together.”

Yin Ci stopped in front of Jiang Youyue, and his smile from earlier vanished like smoke.

“Was the gold really what the Chigou Sect was after when they destroyed the temples and stole it?”

Jiang Youyue’s smile froze.

It was the flesh idols.

After the Chigou Sect stole the gold, the outer shells of the statues were damaged to varying degrees. They saw that the statues remained and didn’t investigate further. They trusted the sturdiness of the flesh idols, just as they trusted the True Immortal of the Hanging Tree.

However, their enemies clearly used the same method on both!

The Twin Root’s effect was simple: as long as the “flesh” was consistent and the root could touch it, the curse could take effect. The flesh of Yin Ci wasn’t just “this one” in front of them—the flesh idols, like the Hanging Tree, absorb vital qi and self-repair, relying on the “immortal body” at their core.

The flesh idols were difficult to destroy, but it was easy to bury a piece of the Twin Root in them. Any ordinary person could do it. The Twin Roots weren’t such a rare item, so both the Chigou and Ling Sects have them. The Kushan Sect only needed to choose a large enough root group and have someone carefully split it.

Facing the two of them, the Immortal Assembly was thoroughly defeated.

Earlier, when Yin Ci was burned down to just a head, the immortal body inside the flesh idol couldn’t escape either. They were left headless, probably with just a few broken bones remaining. Without the immortal body, the flesh idols were merely statues made of flesh with no special attributes.

Shi Jingzhi wouldn’t be force-fed vital qi anymore, and a new Child of Desire wouldn’t appear. His own master was relying on the flesh idol to prolong his life, and now, his master’s fate looked grim…

Jiang Youyue’s face showed instant resentment. He clenched his teeth and fixed his dim eyes on Yin Ci.

“Quite insightful, worthy of being the Imperial Preceptor. Your flesh idols—I guess you’ll have to remake them.” Yin Ci grabbed Jiang Youyue’s collar, whispering in his ear. “Now I’m not immortal. This time, where will you find the core? …Why not go and ask the Child of Desire of Luojiu, and find out the method from them?”

Jiang Youyue: “Are you satisfied now? From now on, droughts, floods, epidemics, injuries—all will remain. Even if Luojiu’s Child of Desire becomes Emperor, wars will not cease! The beautiful land will be in turmoil; the people will suffer—is this the result you wanted?”

“In the past, I fought on the battlefield, joining Xu Li in battles everywhere, so the weak wouldn’t be oppressed by the strong and women, children, and the elderly wouldn’t suffer and die on the streets.”

Yin Ci responded nonchalantly.

“It has been 300 years of peace by the river and sea. Just to protect one tree, you destroyed villages and killed people. Now, the elderly and weak die even earlier than in times of war. Even if one is of the highest nobility, they are still tools to be manipulated… Is this the ‘golden era’ you wish for?”

Upon hearing this, Qu Duanyun struggled to move closer. “For 300 years, Great Yun has been strong and the people live peacefully. Isn’t that enough? Once the countries are unified, there will be no more wars. The price is just some insignificant lives. You killed the Hanging Tree. Didn’t you also decide for others?”

“You speak as if you are on the side of righteousness. Are you any different from us?” After saying this, he spat.

“Yes.”

Yin Ci tightly grabbed Jiang Youyue’s collar and raised his broken sword.

“The Immortal Assembly wronged me first and then hurt my beloved. Half for the greater good and half for personal grudges. Of course, I am different from you—I am but a mortal mired in the mud.”

Seeing that Yin Ci was about to deliver a death blow, Shi Zhongyu was startled and instinctively rushed forward. “Senior Yin, be careful! He is an official of the court. Beware of giving others a chance to criticize—”

But Yin Ci hesitated only for a moment.

Amidst the thunderous sound of collapsing mountains and rivers, the black broken blade shimmered coldly and was about to thrust down. Jiang Youyue roared, and a blinding magical light exploded. When the light faded, both the Imperial Preceptor and Qu Duanyun had disappeared without a trace.

Shi Zhongyu’s face turned pale with a hint of guilt. “They must have been preparing their magic while talking. With so many wilderness valleys around, I fear… I fear it will be hard to find them.”

Yin Ci slowly sheathed his sword, his face bearing a mysterious smile.

“Miss Shi, you’re still the same. Don’t take it to heart; we will find a way.”

He gave her a meaningful look, turned on his heel, and quickly returned to Shi Jingzhi’s side. The Sect Master seemed slightly more lucid, and without regard for the onlookers, he almost clung to Yin Ci.

Relieved that he was alright, Shi Jingzhi let out a deep sigh, as if releasing years of pain and loneliness. He buried his face in Yin Ci’s chest and fell into a deep sleep amidst the deafening noise.

Yin Ci sat quietly. When a monk approached to help, he just shook his head, holding the person tightly in his embrace.

“Let him sleep.”

A dozen miles away, a white light flashed.

Jiang Youyue and Qu Duanyun landed roughly on wild grass. It was a small hill surrounded by rocks and weeds. A few wild apricot trees grew among the rocks. Their flowers had already fallen but their leaves were lush, presenting a scene full of spring vitality.

Qu Duanyun quickly expelled the poison from his body. Knowing that they couldn’t go far with Jiang Youyue’s injuries, they were grateful for the secluded location.

“Master, what about our Hundred-Year Project?” Qu Duanyun’s face showed lingering anger.

“No worries.” Jiang Youyue’s eyes were cold. “Shi Jingzhi didn’t consume the Shirou, which means it must still exist. Such a treasure won’t be easily destroyed. Once we find it, I will personally consume it and plant a new Hanging Tree.”

“…Master…”

“That duo from Kushan, no matter how much they obstruct, are just mere mortals now seeking their own destruction. We will overcome them.”

“This Disciple understands. We need to deal with Xu Jingxing first.”

“Honk.”

“Right. The most urgent matter is the battle against Luojiu. You will accompany me…”

“Honk.”

Jiang Youyue and Qu Duanyun: “……”

Both slowly turned their heads to see a plump, snow-white goose standing not far away in the wild grass. The goose, with two fleshy antennae on its head and eyes full of arrogance and disdain, let out a proud honk and flapped its wings vigorously.

“What are you two doing in such a remote place?” A playful female voice sounded. “Lost in the wilderness, are you perhaps monsters in disguise?”

The newcomer wore dark red clothes that were exquisitely made up. She had an intricate hair bun, revealing mismatched earrings—one of which was a jade pendant of the Minister of the Ministry of Heaven.

Shen Zhu.

She shooed away a sparrow on her shoulder, picked up the honking white goose, and her smile became even more radiant. With her free hand, she picked up a small cloth bag.

“If I heard right, you both want this, don’t you?”

The wind blew the cloth open, revealing a vibrant red fruit. A part of it was missing, oozing thick, clear nectar; its fragrance even more tempting than when whole.

The Shirou.

Realizing this, the master and disciple duo put aside all past grievances and schemes. Both lunged towards the fruit with determination.

Seeing the two of them rushing over, Shen Zhu’s eyes flickered for a moment, and she raised her head high to the sky and laughed sharply.

Shen Zhu laughed until her voice was hoarse; the sound sharp and grating. Rather than a manic laugh, it resembled a wail suppressed for many years. Standing still, she extended her hand, and just as Jiang Youyue’s fingertip touched the Shirou—

A faint sizzle.

Another soft sound followed, and the delightful fragrance turned into the charred stench of burnt meat. A dark flame scorched her left hand, making the two rings on it even more prominent. One was as pitch-black as the Hanging Shadow Sword, while the other faintly glimmered with gold, clearly a tool that channeled yang fire.

Shen Zhu’s left hand was charred beyond recognition, and the Shirou on it also turned pitch black. Yet she kept laughing, her tears flowing freely, as if she felt no pain at all.

The Shirou was small and quickly turned to ash in an instant. Worn out from laughing, Shen Zhu raised her burned left hand and gently licked it twice.

Jiang Youyue stood dumbfounded, staring at the woman in front of him, who laughed triumphantly. Their Hundred-Year Project evaporated with the ashes, leaving not a trace of hope behind. A mix of anger, despair, and helplessness turned into overwhelming murderous intent. Both master and disciple glared with rage and charged at Shen Zhu.

Qu Duanyun struggled to raise his sword, while Jiang Youyue forced himself to form a spell gesture.

“You wretch, how dare you—”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

With two soft clinks, their attacks were blocked by an invisible barrier. Shen Zhu’s eyes, alluring and teary, gazed at them.

“There’s so much I dare to do, isn’t that right, Your Majesty?”

Kinky Thoughts:

Speaking of grafting, I was reminded of the Tree of 40 Fruit, which is a series of fruit trees created by Syracuse University Professor Sam Van Aken using grafting.

Okay, for those who are confused, here’s a summary of what transpired.

300 years ago, the country was in chaos with war and famine. The country of Yun, however, was relatively safe, largely due to the influence of He Chang’an, who at that time, unknown to all, was already part of the Hanging Tree. Using his abilities, he recruited Xu Li, Wang Sun, and Yin Ci and established Great Yun, bringing peace to the Central Plains.

Shortly after Great Yun was established, calamities befell. Convincing the emperor that Yin Ci needed to be sacrificed in order to appease the gods, he captured Yin Ci and beheaded him thousands of times to take his immortal body to use as material. Yin Ci had drunk immortal wine and, unbeknownst to him, became attached to the Hanging Tree. However, he has a special constitution that allows him free will from the Hanging Tree while still retaining its benefits. This is why Yin Ci couldn’t die, and it is also why he has no inner force. When he became connected to the Hanging Tree, his inner force was drained by the tree.

Once they collected enough of his bodies, He Chang’an buried him under the Northwest Great Prohibition to serve as a power source for the seal to block off the natural disasters from the northwest. However, during the building process, a member of the Hua Clan stole some mercury used to seal his stone coffin, thus allowing Yin Ci to eventually escape (after breaking off his arms multiple times). The remnants of his body that he used for his escape powered the seal for a time, but eventually, in current time, it was running out (thus the weakening of the Great Prohibition).

The Imperial Preceptor lineage knows about the Hanging Tree and believes it to have a symbiotic relationship with them. The Hanging Tree has no sentience and only acts on instinct of survival. It views humans as basically livestock and harvests their vital qi so it can continue to grow. This is why in Great Yun, there is a phenomenon called ‘Heaven’s Displeasure’. The old and young who are weak suddenly die without any chance of recovery. This is basically the Hanging Tree culling those it deems unusable in providing it with vital qi (since they are too weak). In return, the Hanging Tree protects Great Yun from natural disasters and calamities in order to preserve its livestock.

In comes the Imperial Preceptor lineage and their Hundred-Year Project. Knowing about the Hanging Tree, they want to continue this symbiotic relationship with it. Through hundreds of years of work, they try to cultivate a “Child of Desire”. This Child of Desire would basically be the vessel for the Hanging Tree to interact with the world. However, they couldn’t use just anyone; it had to be someone with a special constitution and a fixed desire and wouldn’t break down into madness killing themselves.

The first step was to spread flesh idols throughout the country, using Yin Ci’s body as the core and covering it with flesh from “monster materials”. We’ve seen this in arc 2, where they stumbled upon Yuanxian Village. The Immortal Assembly set up villages like these to cultivate people who have “monster material” constitutions and use their flesh to cover Yin Ci’s core. They are then turned into flesh idols and set up in temples throughout Great Yun in order to absorb vital qi from the populace. This vital qi is then channeled to the Child of Desire, shaping them.

The Immortal Assembly was able to master this technique after they dealt with one of the early Children of Desire, the Queen of Milan (arc 4). Through her technique of becoming the Arcane Arts (with herself as the core and flesh of monsters surrounding her), she basically preserved her core while the flesh absorbed vital qi to keep it alive (immortal).

However, this came at a cost, which is why all Children of Desire can’t live very long and have hemoptysis. Because the flesh idol absorbs vital qi through the country, that vital qi is channeled into the Child of Desire, essentially destroying their meridians (as no normal human could accept such power for so long), and it also explains why Shi Jingzhi has so much abundant inner force.

With their plan in motion, Yan Budu was also selected as a potential successor to the True Immortal. However, Yan Budu was hard to control and too mad. Knowing the Immortal Assembly’s plan, he hid the Shirou and then set up the Ghost Tomb in order to attract the martial world. While on the surface it seems like this is all just a game he wanted to play to the martial world after his death, in reality he was actually doing a “good deed” (this explains why he said and did what he did in front of Kongshi’s grave). His action was to reveal the true nature of the Immortal Assembly and the Shirou, and by connection, the true cause of everything, the Hanging Tree.

Finally, there was Shi Jingzhi, the best of all Children of Desire. Because he formulated his fixed desire at an early age (when he met Yin Ci in Juyi Valley), and it was fixed on survival, he became the perfect candidate for the Shirou. Unlike the other Children of Desire whose fixed desire was formed much later in their life and thus drove them to madness and death, Shi Jingzhi, in theory, would eat the Shirou in order to ensure he would live due to his desire, but not to the point where he would go insane from it.

Not only that, Shi Jingzhi is also brilliant and incredibly talented. A genius that appears once every thousand years.

After hundreds of years, the Immortal Assembly managed to cultivate the perfect vessel for the new True Immortal to take over from Sun Wang, who was the current True Immortal.

Like all plants, the Hanging Tree needs to propagate. Sun Wang, now bearing the seed of the Hanging Tree, needs to leave the land and go to a foreign place that has no Hanging Tree and “plant himself”, just like He Cheng’an did in Luojiu after he completed his mission.

However, the current Hanging Tree needs a successor, so the Immortal Assembly enacted this project in order to breed a perfect Child of Desire to take over.

In present day, the Immortal Assembly plunged Great Yun into chaos in order to force Shi Jingzhi to become the new True Immortal with the promise of immortality and the seat of the Emperor to rule Great Yun.

They have also overtime destroyed many things that would impede its growth or harm it, including the wushu ore. This is why Shen Zhu’s village and the other two were destroyed. Wushu ore can stop vital qi absorption, which is dangerous to the Hanging Tree.

Unfortunately, their plan didn’t pan out.

Because Shi Jingzhi met Yin Ci at a young age, Yin Ci was able to quell his object addiction. This essentially allows Shi Jingzhi to not hastily accept the Shirou just so he can survive (knowing he will essentially no longer retain himself and just become a soulless puppet of the Hanging Tree).

So they devised a plan to destroy the Hanging Tree. In their fight against Sun Wang, Yin Ci inserted the Twin Roots into him, which then formed a connection between him and the Hanging Tree (after all Yin Ci is part of the Hanging Tree so by extension he is the tree).

The Twin Roots act like a curse; when one side gets hurt, so does the other. Thus when Shi Jingzhi burned Sun Wang with yang fire channeled through the hanging shadow sword made of wushu ore, it also burned Yin Ci and by extension Great Yun’s Hanging Tree.

Not only did the Hanging Tree burn but so did all the flesh idols throughout Great Yun. When the Chigou Sect raided the Imperial Celestial temples, they inserted the Twin Roots in the flesh idols, which triggered the curse when Yin Ci started to disintegrate, thus essentially killing two birds with one stone (the Hanging Tree and the flesh idols).

With the Hanging Tree dead, however, that means that Yin Ci, who was connected to it, would no longer have his immortality, so he would no longer regrow.

In order to save Yin Ci, what Shi Jingzhi did was basically “grafted” himself onto the Hanging Tree using the True Immortal finger he severed. By grafting himself to the Hanging Tree he became a Hanging Tree as well which allowed him to save Yin Ci.

As Yin Ci was dying since the Great Yun Hanging Tree was dead, Shi Jingzhi infused his vital qi into Yin Ci thus allowing Yin Ci’s “roots” to entwine with the new “Hanging Tree”.

Now Yin Ci and Shi Jingzhi literally share the same fate as they are bound together. Like the Twin Roots, if Yin Ci gets injured, so does Shi Jingzhi. And with the destruction of the flesh idols across the country, Shi Jingzhi no longer suffers from over absorption of vital qi.

And we have now reached the conclusion, with all the puzzle pieces coming together.

For those wondering why they didn’t just capture Shi Jingzhi and force feed him the Shirou, it’s because they needed to test him and make sure he’s fit for it. They didn’t want another Yan Budu situation (side note: the reason why the Yan Clan had a kill order on all their bloodline is because Yan Budu is part of the royal family. Since he sowed his seed everywhere, the Imperial Preceptor lineage needed to execute all his bloodline to prevent the royal bloodline from leaking and the potential leakage of the Children of Desire), and they needed someone smarter and better than the current True Immortal (remember Sun Wang was illiterate and was only good on the battlefield and even then was inferior to Yin Ci). This is why Yin Ci, who has both brawn and brain was chosen by He Chang’an to become the True Immortal but due to his special constitution only connected to the Hanging Tree becoming part of it but not controlled by it.

Jiang Youyue was also overconfident that once Shi Jingzhi passed their test he would willingly eat the Shirou due his obsession for survival. Little did he know that Yin Ci had a big impact on him during the formation of his obsession which threw everything off. Had Shi Jingzhi not encountered Yin Ci in Juyi Valley during his childhood and saved him for his possession, and had they not met again on Kushan in the prologue, Shi Jingzhi would have followed the Immortal Assembly’s plan and ate the Shirou.

In a way, they literally save each other and now they are connected physically, emotionally, and spiritually in every sense! It’s quite romantic if you really think about it.

Chapter 108

<Tianxiu Arc>

Within and around the royal palace, gloomy clouds hovered, and the once magnificent palace was now shrouded in a hazy gloom. The envoy they had sent to negotiate peace with the Wolf Star Desert Tribe had returned, bringing with him the tribe’s terms for reconciliation.

“Did they really say that?” The reigning emperor of Tianxiu inquired in a slightly irritated tone after hearing the envoy’s report.

The envoy nervously lowered his head. “Yes, the King of the Desert from Wolf Star said that if we want to end the war, in addition to meeting their compensation demands, His Highness himself must go… to Wolf Star… for a marriage alliance.”

His voice grew softer, but in the silent hall, every word echoed clearly to all present.

“Absurd!” The emperor slapped the armrest of his throne hard, becoming so agitated that he began to cough violently. Attendants rushed forward to comfort him. The average lifespan of the Tianxiu royal family was around forty years, and the emperor was nearing his end. Born weak, the royal bloodline had always passed from one generation to the next without branching. His only heir, Yue Hua, was just sixteen years old. In two more years, once he became an adult, the throne could be passed on, allowing the emperor to rest in peace. But now, their greatest enemy, the Desert Tribe of Wolf Star, had made such an outrageous demand.

Finally catching his breath, the emperor said, “Yue Hua is my only son, the sole heir to the throne. More importantly, he is a proud young man. How can we send him to marry into a barbaric foreign tribe?”

A minister below said indignantly, “The Desert Tribe must be aware of His Highness’s situation. By making this impudent demand, they clearly want to use a refusal of the marriage alliance as a pretext to invade. If we are forced to agree, it would be a great humiliation for Tianxiu, and the royal lineage would be cut off.”

Another lamented, “Given His Highness’s health and susceptibility to illnesses, how can he withstand the long journey and the environment of another planet? Furthermore, the Wolf Star inhabitants’ ferocity and barbarism are well known. How can he possibly…”

The young prince, seated prominently to the west, turned even paler as the murmurs continued.

With many voices but no solution, the Desert Tribe of the Wolf Star was a formidable enemy that Tianxiu couldn’t match. Sacrificing the young prince might be the only way to avoid the nation’s destruction.

The emperor, with a growing headache, exclaimed, “With so many of you here, can no one think of a way to repel the enemy?”

One of the royal science researchers stepped forward. “Your Majesty, I have an idea.” He unfolded a blueprint. “This is my latest research—a giant humanoid made of metal, possessing immense offensive and defensive capabilities. It can be operated from inside. I call it a ‘Mech’.”

Someone immediately countered, “You mentioned it’s operated from inside. This means there are high requirements for the operator’s physical abilities, balance, and adaptability. So, who will operate this… Mech you’ve invented?”

The researcher hesitated.

Another suggestion arose. “What if we find an ally, offer them this Mech, and in return, seek their protection?”

“Don’t be naive. What if the ally acquires our weapon, replicates the technology, and then turns it against us? Haven’t we been deceived enough already?”

“What we urgently need now is a unique weapon that doesn’t require manual operation and has autonomous capabilities. But where can we find such a weapon?”

All eyes turned to a silent individual, another researcher from the Royal Academy and a highly regarded scientist in recent years.

Under intense scrutiny, he stepped forward. “Your Majesty, my team has been working on a project to develop an individual entity with autonomous combat capabilities. However, we’ve encountered a major challenge.”

“What’s the problem?” the emperor asked eagerly.

“We lack an effective ‘sample’.”

“Sample? What do you mean?”

“The entities we’ve developed possess very basic artificial intelligence. They can’t handle complex commands and certainly can’t be used in warfare. The human brain is an incredibly complex organ, and we can’t replicate it solely with scientific simulation. To advance artificial intelligence further, we would need…”

“Need what?”

“We would need a real human to willingly become a ‘sample’. Based on this, we could then replicate and modify it, creating a true sentient being.”

The courtiers exchanged worried glances. For someone to become a sample meant transforming into a lifeless entity.

“Can’t we use death row inmates for this?”

He shook his head. “Undergoing transformation requires enduring inhuman torture. We’ve tried this experiment with death row inmates, but none survived. To succeed, the individual must possess a strong physique, an extraordinary will, and undying loyalty to the royal family.”

The room fell silent. Everyone hoped the research would succeed in saving their nation, but no one wanted to become a lifeless monster.

Just when everyone was at a loss, a man stood up and said, “I am willing to try.”

There was a commotion in the hall. The emperor looked intently and saw that the person who had stepped forward was the young prince’s bodyguard. He was one of the rare “physically strong individuals” among the people of Tianxiu. He had been assigned to the prince when the latter was ten years old and had been responsible for his safety ever since.

When Yua Hua saw it was him, he leaned forward but stopped himself, gripping the arms of his chair so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

The emperor was delighted. “You are willing?”

“Yes,” the bodyguard replied firmly. “My physical condition is superior to that of the average person, and I am completely loyal to the royal family. I believe I should meet the requirements.”

The emperor let out a sigh of relief, feeling very fond of this man who was willing to take on such a great responsibility. “What is… your name again?”

“Your Majesty, my name is Cang Yun.”

“Cang Yun.” The emperor’s gaze softened as he repeated the name. “Cang Yun, good.”

“Your Majesty, I am also willing to try.”

Another person stepped forward from behind the young prince and stood beside Cang Yun.

“…You?”

The individual performed a courtesy typical of palace women. “I am also physically strong and have been appointed to take care of the prince’s daily needs since childhood. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I’ve watched him grow. I cannot tolerate the rude demands of the Desert Tribe. If this transformation has a chance of failure, then having another person increases the odds of success. Please allow me to show my loyalty to the prince.”

The emperor looked at the man and woman standing side by side in the hall. They were merely attendants to the young prince, arguably the lowest in rank in the hall. Yet, when it mattered most, they stepped forward to serve their master, whereas not one official had done so.

Having such individuals come forward, he seemed to already envision the future of Tianxiu.

The emperor gestured for his attendants to approach. “Help me up.”

Two attendants immediately assisted the emperor. With their help, he walked down from his throne to stand before the two.

“Whether the transformation plan succeeds or not, you both are heroes of Tianxiu. My people and I will forever remember your kindness. If our lineage is fortunate to continue, I promise to carve statues in your likeness so that your deeds will be passed down for generations and your names will be immortalized.”

He ordered his attendants. “Let go.”

They carefully released him, and the emperor, in front of everyone, knelt down to the two.

Seeing him do so, everyone else naturally followed suit, bowing down in gratitude. Only Cang Yun and the woman stood tall.

That night, some found it hard to sleep. Cang Yun, as usual, patrolled the young prince’s sleeping chambers and found him still awake.

“Why haven’t you slept?” he asked, crouching down and adjusting the blanket over the prince’s knees. Yue Hua was sensitive to the cold, and at night he had to cover his legs with such a thick blanket.

“Why did you step forward?” Yue Hua’s voice carried a sadness he couldn’t hide.

Cang Yun knelt on one knee. “Because I could never watch my prince marry an enemy to save our people. My duty is to protect you. Even if it means sacrificing my life, I will not allow such an event to occur.”

He tightened the corner of the blanket with a slight smile. “This is the last time I take the initiative to do something like this for you. If we succeed in the future, you can still command me. I swear, no matter what I become, I will always be loyal to you. I will engrave this loyalty into my genes, replicate it without reservation, and provide you with the strongest support in the world.”

Yue Hua reached out and touched his face. “Even if there are a million of you in the future, I would recognize you at a glance.”

Cang Yun lifted Yue Hua’s hand and gently kissed the back of it. “It’s my honor.”

……

The entire nation was focused on this crucial moment. The experimental chamber slowly opened, revealing two people inside with their eyes tightly shut.

“Is this… considered a success or not?” the Emperor asked anxiously.

At his words, it seemed like a signal. Both individuals inside the chamber slowly opened their eyes. Though their appearances remained unchanged, the lack of emotion in their eyes made them seem like completely different people, devoid of all desires and feelings.

Scientists thoroughly examined both of them. All their vital signs appeared normal, but they still hesitated to conclude anything.

“Go, try destroying that stone,” one scientist ordered the transformed Cang Yun.

He referred to a massive boulder outside, taller than a man and so wide it would take two people to wrap their arms around it. In a blink, Cang Yun vanished from their sight and reappeared behind the rock, shattering it with a single punch.

The inherently frail people of Tianxiu had never seen such power before. They were all awestruck, and it took a moment for them to recover.

“We did it!”

“We succeeded! We succeeded!” Everyone cheered.

There was an atmosphere of elation. Even the Emperor, looking up with relief, took a long breath. Only the young prince looked on with sorrow in his eyes.

“Today is a day that only occurs once in five hundred years when the Lone Star, the Tianxiu planet, and the Blazing Sun align,” the Emperor announced. “I name these warriors after the Lone Star. They will be the hope for Tianxiu’s future.”

He ordered, “Proceed with the replication plan as fast as possible. I want to prepare the most magnificent entourage for the young prince’s marriage procession, one that the Wolf Star people will remember for a lifetime.”

“As you command, Your Majesty!”

It was a night of jubilation for the Tianxiu people, with festivities everywhere. Only the prince’s palace remained quiet.

“Your Highness, you called for me.”

A familiar voice, a familiar face. Cang Yun approached Yue Hua, every detail, even the rhythm of his footsteps, exactly as before.

But when Yue Hua looked into his eyes, the warmth that used to spontaneously appear was gone forever.

The Cang Yun now, though still loyal and possessing astonishing power, would no longer act on his own initiative for him.

“Come here.”

Yue Hua reached out, and Cang Yun obediently knelt before him. “What would you have me do, Your Highness?”

After a moment’s thought, Yue Hua said, “Tuck in the blanket for me.”

With great care, Cang Yun adjusted the blanket, making sure every corner was perfect, as he had done countless times before.

“Is there anything else?” he asked when he finished.

Yue Hua gently traced a line from Cang Yun’s hair to his lips. “Smile for me.”

No muscle twitched in response.

“Smile.” Yue Hua tried to force a smile by pushing up the corners of Cang Yun’s mouth, creating a comical expression. Instead of laughing, Yue Hua’s eyes welled up.

“Do you remember the past?” His voice trembled. “Do you remember me?”

Cang Yun remained silent.

Yue Hua leaned forward, embracing Cang Yun’s head as tears rolled down. “You said I could order you to do anything, but you can’t even smile. You liar, a big liar.”

……

Eight years later.

The former emperor had passed away, and the young new emperor had ascended to the throne—a piece of news that was already four years old.

Since the birth of the Lone Star warriors, no other race dared to target Tianxiu. Enemies that once invaded and humiliated them received their retribution. The Wolf Star’s vast Desert Tribe, one of the largest, faced devastating retribution, leading to their complete disintegration and demise.

Tianxiu experienced an unprecedented peace. It seemed they had little to worry about, but one issue remained unresolved. Ever since the new emperor’s ascension, there had been persistent calls for him to take a queen. However, he had been delaying using various excuses. Several elder statesmen spent considerable effort persuading the new emperor to think of the royal lineage and settle down.

Finally, today, the whole nation awaited the long-anticipated wedding ceremony.

“Your Majesty, the ceremony is about to begin. Where are you going?” The master of ceremonies asked anxiously as he followed behind.

Yue Hua didn’t turn his head. “I’m just saying goodbye to an old friend. I won’t run away from the wedding. You don’t need to worry.”

The master of ceremonies sighed in exasperation. The young emperor was truly worrisome.

The heavy door creaked open, revealing a grand, ornate hall with only one person standing alone inside. Hearing the sound, the man turned around and respectfully said, “Your Majesty.”

Yue Hua signaled his attendants to push him forward, then waved them away.

“You may leave. I have something to discuss with him privately.”

The attendants obeyed and left. Once the massive doors closed, only the two of them remained. Yue Hua, supporting himself on the armrest, struggled to stand and took steps to approach Cang Yun.

“I’m getting married. Continuing the royal lineage is my responsibility. Did you foresee this day coming? Is that why you chose to abandon all emotions early on?”

“But that’s okay. Only I hold our memories. Only I have felt sorrow every day for the past eight years. You, knowing nothing, might indeed be blessed in a way.”

Yue Hua lowered his head, took Cang Yun’s hand, and solemnly placed a hexagram emblem in his palm, then closed Cang Yun’s fingers around it.

“You possess eternal life, while I know my time is limited. I hope you can protect my descendants forever, just as you protected me. This is my last request.”

Attendants escorted the young emperor out. In the distance, the sound of ceremonial cannons boomed. The ceremony was about to begin.

Standing in the center of the vast hall, Cang Yun’s face remained expressionless, but a silent tear rolled down his cheek.

Chapter 107

Fu Yao rushed into the blaze, only to see Ying Feng standing alone. Aside from an unrecognizable corpse that clearly wasn’t of the Tianxiu people, no one else was present.

“Ying Feng! Where’s Ling Xiao?” Explosions resounded around them. Fu Yao shouted over the noise.

Ying Feng stood still, seemingly deaf to both the explosions and Fu Yao’s voice.

Another loud bang was heard as debris fell nearby. Fu Yao knew they couldn’t stay there for long. He needed to get Ying Feng out first.

“This place is going to be destroyed. Let’s move!” He tried to pull Ying Feng but couldn’t move him.

Seeing Ying Feng’s despondent look, as if he wished for death, Fu Yao cursed under his breath and struck Ying Feng, knocking him unconscious. Carrying him, Fu Yao dashed out.

Burning obstacles fell in their path. Fu Yao waved his hand, extinguishing the fire in front of him, paving a path of ice and snow.

Supporting Ying Feng, Fu Yao sped out of the starship. Nie Yun, piloting a spacecraft, quickly came to their rescue. They had just escaped the danger zone when a massive explosion destroyed the starship, which looked like a grand firework before it faded.

This starship, wanted by the military for decades, had finally met its end.

Long Yin looked at the recovered Ying Feng. He had awakened from unconsciousness yet remained silent and looked lost, like a wandering soul.

It was the most profound loss Long Yin had ever experienced in his life. None of his campaigns over the years had ended in such a disastrous defeat.

Everyone waited for his instruction. Long Yin sighed. “Return to the surface, to the command center.”

“I want to go back to school.” Ying Feng, who had been silent, suddenly spoke.

His subordinates looked at Long Yin uncertainly.

“I want to go back to school,” Ying Feng repeated.

Left with no choice, Long Yin could only wave his hand helplessly. “Take him back.”

The military fleet landed at the Royal Sky landing pad. Ying Feng, holding Xiao Hui, disembarked from the spaceship alone.

“Is it okay to let him go back alone?” Nie Yun asked worriedly from behind.

Fu Yao, watching Ying Feng’s departing figure, had a complicated expression. “Let him have some time alone.”

The long night had passed, and dawn was breaking. Ying Feng bent down to put down Xiao Hui. As he looked up, the first rays of the sunrise met his eyes. Instinctively, he raised his hand to shield them from the dazzling light.

Though it was early, there were students exercising on the campus. As Ying Feng walked, a student running towards him shouted:

“Ying Feng! Ling Xiao has caused trouble again. Go check on him!”

Ying Feng paused. “What did you say?”

Thinking he hadn’t heard clearly, the student repeated louder. “I said why are you up so early today. Walking your dog?”

It took a few seconds for Ying Feng to realize he had misheard. He walked away in a daze.

The student who greeted him looked back, puzzled. What’s wrong with Ying Feng today?

Returning to the dormitory he once shared with Ling Xiao, a large photo on the wall served as a constant reminder of Ling Xiao’s presence. Ying Feng slowly sat on the bed, gazing at the picture. He then reached into his chest pocket.

Where he once kept a token from his past life lover, he now felt a small metal box. He opened it to reveal two rings. He took out one, engraved with a date from a year ago.

Xiao Hui struggled to climb onto the bed. Usually, it wouldn’t dare to do so when Ying Feng was around, but today Ying Feng didn’t stop it. It rested its small head on Ying Feng’s leg, its light gray eyes filled with a sorrow mirroring Ying Feng’s.

Sunset followed by sunrise, the time outside was changing, but the time inside the house seemed forever frozen on that day. Outside, there came loud knocks on the door, intermingled with Red Head’s shouts:

“Ying Feng! You’ve been inside for three days and nights. If you don’t open the door, I’ll break in!”

Inside, there was complete silence. Red Head exchanged a glance with Bing Can, then teleported into Ying Feng’s dorm room, quickly opening the door for Bing Can and the others.

“Ying Feng! How long do you plan to mope in here?” Without waiting for a response, Red Head stormed into the bedroom. The abrupt change in lighting caught him off guard. Even though it was bright outside, thick curtains inside blocked all light, turning the room into perpetual night, seemingly never to see dawn again.

Ying Feng sat motionless with Xiao Hui beside him, the creature having neither eaten nor drunk for three days.

Seeing this, Red Head felt a mix of sorrow and anger. He stormed to the window, ready to pull back the curtains.

“Don’t open them.”

The petrified Ying Feng suddenly whispered.

Red Head’s action paused midway. A sliver of the curtain was pulled back, letting a shaft of sunlight stream in. The beam of light, trying its best, illuminated the dark room. Standing by the window, facing outside, the sun’s warmth hit Red Head’s face, yet his hands gripping the curtains trembled.

Bing Can, having observed everything, sighed and softly said, “I know you’re grieving, but you must think of Xiao Hui. If you continue to neglect yourself, it will die.”

His words stirred Ying Feng. Lowering his gaze, he saw Xiao Hui, weak and almost lifeless. Yu Ji extended his hand. “Give it to me.”

After a moment’s hesitation, Ying Feng handed over the frail creature. In just three days, Xiao Hui had lost so much weight that Ying Feng could feel its bones.

Watching Yu Ji take Xiao Hui away, Bing Can crouched again. “Of all the people I’ve met, you have one of the strongest spirits. It’s time to pull yourself together. We all hope for you to heal. Losing a friend has already saddened us enough; we can’t lose you too.”

“Do you remember? During the entrance exam, Ling Xiao said you were his pride. I believe Ling Xiao wouldn’t want to see his pride like this. He was such a bright, positive person. Please remember him that way and choose to live on with vigor.”

Having said that, Bing Can stood up and signaled to Red Head. “Let’s go.”

Only then did Red Head turn around, tear streaks evident on his face.

Quietness returned to the room, and after what felt like an eternity, the person inside finally began to move.

……

Fu Yao looked at the person in front of him. Even though he had tried his best to groom himself, the signs of exhaustion were undeniable.

Ying Feng didn’t speak, waiting for Fu Yao to decide his future.

“After discussing with other instructors,” Fu Yao finally broke the silence after a while, “you can transfer to the Combat Command Department, or any other specialty in Royal Sky that interests you. You don’t need to make a decision now. When you’ve made your choice, let me know.”

Ying Feng nodded calmly. “Okay.”

Seeing him like this, Fu Yao felt even more distressed. He walked over to Ying Feng, raised his hand, and gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

“I’m truly sorry,” he said.

Ying Feng turned ninety degrees, gave him a military salute, and left without looking back.

Someone was waiting outside his dormitory. Seeing Ying Feng return, he immediately stood straight.

“Ying Feng, you’re back. I knocked earlier, but you weren’t here. Your classmates told me you went out.”

Ying Feng glanced at the slightly nervous Heng He and gave a brief greeting. “What are you doing here?”

“I…” Heng He lowered his head awkwardly. “I heard about Ling Xiao. I’m so sorry for your loss.”

This was the second time in a short while that Ying Feng had heard similar words, and he felt somewhat numb.

“Thank you for visiting,” Ying Feng replied succinctly.

“There’s also…”

Heng He hesitated, pulling out a small chip from his pocket. “This is Ling Xiao’s keepsake. I thought it best to give it to you.”

Ying Feng took it with two fingers and realized it was a holographic storage card.

“What’s on this?”

“…You’ll know when you watch it.”

After Heng He left, Ying Feng returned to his room and plugged the storage card into the player. The beginning of the video was blank. He went into the bedroom to take off his coat when a familiar voice echoed from the living room.

“I’m about to undergo treatment. After this treatment, I might lose all memories from the past three months…”

Ying Feng, dropping his coat, stumbled back to the living room. In the center of the room, a figure sat, speaking earnestly, “…To me, these memories are precious, so I chose to record them. Even if I forget them someday, they won’t truly be lost.”

Ying Feng slowly approached the holographic figure in disbelief, trying to touch it. But as he reached out, his hand passed right through, drawing a defeated arc in the air.

Xiao Hui also ran out, seeing Ling Xiao’s image. It excitedly tried to pounce on him but passed right through and landed on the ground. Undeterred, Xiaohui turned and pounced again and again, repeatedly passing through Ling Xiao’s holographic image without being able to touch him. Yet, it persisted in its attempts, all the while its nostrils flaring strongly, showing its confusion at not being able to detect Ling Xiao’s scent.

The projected Ling Xiao gazed in the direction of the camera, looking past Ying Feng to the wall behind.

His voice continued, “…He took me to the seaside for our honeymoon. We dove in bubbles, turned seawater into hot springs, and made wishes upon shooting stars… He drew a portrait of me, which I’ve stored in my secret stash along with other gifts he gave me…”

A secret stash…?

Recalling something, Ying Feng dashed back into his bedroom, frantically searching. After a thorough search, he found a black box under his bed, which Ling Xiao had never let him see.

Holding the box, he hesitated to open it, recalling a sentence Ling Xiao had told him long ago—

If I ever die, open it and take a look.

It felt like an eternity before he finally opened it. The first thing he saw was a fragment of fabric. Ying Feng recognized it—it was the piece of sleeve torn off when Lan Sheng fell from a building, the one he had personally given to Ling Xiao.

It was that day when Ling Xiao, holding onto the fabric, vowed in front of Ping Zong’s portrait never to become anyone’s Qizi. Yet, he ended up becoming his own—until just a few days ago.

The first drawing he made of Ling Xiao was placed underneath the fabric piece. In the drawing, Ling Xiao was depicted with contentedly squinted eyes, with an aura of happiness that seemed about to burst from the paper.

Ying Feng picked up the drawing, revealing a plastic bag beneath. The pink bag radiated a shy hue, and on it was an image of a little girl in a magical costume. He carefully examined it for a long time, finally recalling that it was the packaging for the strawberry bread he had once bought for Ling Xiao. Surprisingly, Ling Xiao had saved the packaging, and the gift he referred to giving Ying Feng was this.

Ying Feng carefully extracted each bag, one by one. For a box of bread with 24 packs, there were 24 wrappers. He counted each, none missing, none left behind. However, after taking the last pink one, he found another bag at the bottom, but it wasn’t pink.

With trembling hands, Ying Feng picked up the yellow bag adorned with a banana pattern. The once naive and penniless figure who couldn’t even afford food was confidently striking a combat pose in front of him.

It’s not yet determined who will bully whom. By the way, I prefer the taste of banana over strawberry.

If the person standing in front of you now was your lover from your past life, I don’t believe you’d dare do to him what you did to me yesterday!

You’re truly amazing, and I’m proud of you.

If I had to make a wish, instead of gaining, I’d wish not to lose.

Ying Feng, I’ve liked you for a very long time. It feels so good to say this as an equal.

Tears dropped on the bag, blurring its design. If they could start over, if he had known Ling Xiao’s feelings earlier, would his current regrets not be so overwhelming and all-consuming?

Ling Xiao’s voice came softly from the next room, as if it had traveled through a thousand years to reach him.

“…But if I truly forget and the memories restored aren’t as beautiful as they are now, I wouldn’t regret the decision I made today. Because only he knows the efforts we’ve made together. It’s unfair. This feeling, obtained after enduring countless hardships, I want to share it with him, no matter what…”

……

Four and a half years later.

“See that? On our left, most are Qizis, and as you move to the right, there are more Qizhus. Those of us standing in the middle represent the dividing line of the school. That’s because the Joint Combat program is the only major where the ratio of Qizhu to Qizi is always maintained at 1:1,” someone explained to the freshmen.

“Really?” The newcomers looked around, and suddenly one of them pointed at a man in a deep blue Qizhu uniform and asked, “Hey, isn’t that odd? There’s a solo Qizhu up front. Why is there no one beside him?”

The person looked at the upright figure ahead and was instantly filled with sympathy. “Him? He used to be a student in our program, but his Qizi met with an accident, so he transferred to the Command Program midway. But for every entrance and graduation ceremony, he returns. The spot next to him is always vacant.”

In the blink of an eye, half a year passed. Ying Feng completed his final term at Royal Sky. Before leaving, he went to bid farewell to Fu Yao. Even though he was no longer his student, Fu Yao had always taken good care of him over the years.

“Made up your mind then? Not joining the military department?”

“Yes,” Ying Feng replied.

“I’m a bit disappointed, but I respect your decision. If you ever change your mind, you can come to me anytime.”

Ying Feng saluted, bid him goodbye, and departed.

The priest was watering plants in the churchyard when a yellow sports car pulled up, quietly parking outside. A figure stepped out, wearing sunglasses, dragging a suitcase, accompanied by a large, majestic gray wolf.

In the five years since Ling Xiao’s departure, Ying Feng had frequently visited here. The priest had become very familiar with him and occasionally let him stay overnight in the room once occupied by Ling Xing.

“You’ve graduated.”

“Yes.” Ying Feng nodded. “May I stay here?”

“Of course,” the priest replied with a smile, stepping aside. “As long as you don’t mind the small room, you can stay as long as you like.”

Ying Feng nodded in gratitude and, accompanied by Xiao Hui, entered the church’s main door.

Chapter 106

A shadow flickered in the darkness, and among the people present, only Zhen He noticed it. He glanced over the pale-faced Ying Feng, the stunned Ling Xiao, and the almost insane Zhu Yue, and seeing that no one was paying attention to him, discreetly retreated from the scene.

Lan Sheng was in a hurry to leave when suddenly, a shadow flashed in front of him, blocking his path.

“Is it you?” Lan Sheng took a cautious step back. He didn’t recognize this person but knew he was Zhu Yue’s contract partner. Having failed to snatch a soul earlier, he wasn’t sure what this person intended now.

“You heard everything, didn’t you?” Zhen He asked.

Taken aback, Lan Sheng nervously denied, “No.”

“Weren’t you just preparing a spaceship to leave?” Zhen He easily saw through him. “Don’t think you can easily take someone away. Besides, as you’ve already heard, your good friend will soon vanish from this world.”

Realizing he’d been found out, Lan Sheng’s hands gradually moved behind him. However, Zhen He spoke again. “But if you wish to save him, there might be a way.”

Lan Sheng paused, halting his motion to draw a weapon. “What?”

……

Xing Lou gently laid Yue Ying on the bed. Because of the unbearable pain, his frail body curled up, and he crumpled the sheets in his grip. Xing Lou looked sorrowfully at Yue Ying, who was much weaker than the average person. Comparing ancient Tianxiu beings to modern ones, the former seemed fragile, where a minor injury could be fatal.

“Just endure this for a while,” Xing Lou whispered to comfort him.

Yue Ying had already prepared mentally. Compared to the pain he’d borne over the years, this was nothing. After today, he too would have eternal life. Although he would be forcibly transformed into a species he detested, it wouldn’t prevent him from surviving.

Amidst the pain, Yue Ying tried to distract himself with conversation. “Do you truly trust that Zhu Yue won’t sabotage the process?”

Xing Lou brushed back the damp golden strands on Yue Ying’s forehead. “He wants Ling Xiao gone more than anyone. A simple death isn’t enough for him. He desires to use you, in Ling Xiao’s body, to oppose Ying Feng. Alive or dead, he won’t spare either of them.”

Yue Ying gave a sardonic laugh, cut off by a sharp intake of breath due to the pain. “Such a ruthless person. No wonder he survived that catastrophe. I feel sorry for those who offended him.”

“With the wisdom of the ancient Tianxiu people and the strength of the modern ones, who knows what he’s capable of if he’s ill-intentioned? Even if we have a hundred enemies, I wouldn’t want an unstable ally.”

With those few words, Xing Lou seemed to have sealed Zhu Yue’s fate, making Yue Ying’s pain seem to lessen a bit.

“Soon, I’ll be someone else. Seeing a different face every day, will you be able to handle it?”

Xing Lou chuckled softly and lay down beside him. “I’ve reincarnated countless times in front of you, always with a different appearance. Haven’t you always accepted me regardless? After thousands of years, physical appearances mean little to me. It’s the person you are that matters.”

He reached out and held Yue Ying’s hand tightly. “Ling Xiao has already reverted to his original form. Once I awaken in this lifetime, we can undergo the coming-of-age ceremony, and you will no longer fear death.”

“I want to be the Qizhu,” Yue Ying said.

“Then I’ll let you be the Qizhu,” Xing Lou agreed without hesitation.

Contentedly, Yue Ying closed his eyes. Everything he had at the moment made him very satisfied, making the millennia of waiting worthwhile.

Ying Feng shut off the communication signal, and silence engulfed the surroundings. Everyone cautiously looked at him, yet no one dared to speak up.

“Do we have a star map?” he asked.

“Yes.” Fu Yao pressed a button on the control panel, and a hovering holographic projection of a planet appeared in midair.

“Which area was the location I found earlier?”

Fu Yao drew a circle around a position in the universe with his finger, leaving a yellowish mist in the air. “About a sphere this big in radius.”

Ying Feng closely observed the star map, drew a line from Zhiyang to Tianxiu, and then drew an arrow through it.

“They just left the extended line between Zhiyang and Tianxiu, probably navigating in this direction. Concentrate the search in the intersecting area.”

Everyone had a sudden realization, and they quickly communicated the latest coordinate range. The military dispatched all their fleets for a carpet search. However, in the vast universe, finding a starship with a stealth system was no easy task.

Time ticked away, and just when everyone secretly worried that Ying Feng might not hold on, exhilarating news came.

“A703 found a suspicious target. Coordinates…” a string of numbers was reported through the communicator.

Ying Feng ordered before Fu Yao could, “Head there immediately!”

The pilot didn’t even wait for his own general’s order; he ignited the thrusters straight away. The spaceship’s speed began to increase linearly, and dozens of warships from all directions also turned and accelerated, converging towards the same direction.

Underneath the control panel, where others couldn’t see, Ying Feng clenched his fist tightly. Half an hour had passed since communication was cut off. Ling Xiao, you must hang on.

……

Ling Xiao had a peculiar device placed over his head. He understood that this was probably the final step of the consciousness transfer process that Zhu Yue had mentioned. Being unable to move, he could only let it be.

Beside him, Yue Ying wore the same device. The two sat side by side, and their vastly different destinies were about to unfold.

“Are you sure there’s no issue?” Even if he believed that Zhu Yue genuinely wanted to get rid of Ling Xiao, Xing Lou still asked cautiously.

“Of course, that’s how I survived,” Zhu Yue confidently replied. “It took me a whole year to replicate this device. I’ve checked every data countless times. There won’t be any issues.”

Xing Lou, hearing his solemn promise, slightly relaxed.

“Where’s Lan Sheng?” Xing Lou looked around but didn’t see any sign of Lan Sheng.

“It’s better if he’s not here. Saves a lot of trouble,” Zhu Yue ordered Zhen He. “If he appears later, control him. Don’t let him interfere with my grand plan.”

Zhen He gave no response. Zhu Yue knew this was his style and didn’t emphasize further.

“Are you ready?” Zhu Yue’s question was more directed at Ling Xiao. “You just said your goodbyes to your Qizhu. Now, it’s time to say goodbye to this world.”

“Ying Feng won’t go easy just because Yue Ying looks like me,” Ling Xiao calmly stated. “We’ve already agreed. If I might become a sinner of Tianxiu, he’ll eliminate me before that happens.”

“Really?” Zhu Yue sneered. “If he could truly bring himself to obliterate your soul while you’re in a fledgling state, that would be quite a scene.”

“By then, I won’t be myself anymore,” Ling Xiao retorted. “Even if it’s my body, I believe he can differentiate better than anyone.”

Zhu Yue wanted to respond, but Xing Lou interrupted him.

“Stop wasting time and hurry up.”

Zhu Yue could only shake his head regretfully. “Goodbye, or rather, farewell forever.”

He pulled the lever, and the progress bar on the device above the two started moving.

Xing Lou knelt down, holding Yue Ying’s hand to his chest. This was the last time he’d see this person in this body, and naturally, he wanted to cherish the sight.

“No matter who you become, I swear I’ll always be loyal to you. I’ll build a new Tianxiu for you. This time, I won’t break my promise.”

Yue Ying gave a slight smile. “I believe you.”

Ling Xiao suddenly became curious. If he was the past self who was absolutely loyal to Yue Ying, would he actively offer his own body and soul to save his life? But he was no longer Yue Ying’s “Qizi”. In this life, only Ying Feng was his Qizhu.

Ling Xiao closed his eyes, and all he could see was the pale face of a certain person. He thought that with Ying Feng’s strong spirit, there was nothing in the world that could hurt him, but he never expected that he himself would become the bullet aimed at his heart.

He remembered the confession that was aborted halfway. Not confessing my feelings to you in person is the greatest regret of my life. If there’s still a chance, if there’s still a chance…

The progress bar finally stabilized at the end. The two people on the left and right both hung their heads quietly, as if they had fallen asleep. Xing Lou held his breath, waiting for one of them to wake up.

After a long time, Ling Xiao slowly opened his eyes, looking somewhat bewildered.

“…Yue Ying?” Xing Lou asked tentatively.

Ling Xiao looked around the scene again and finally settled his gaze on Xing Lou.

“I am Ling Xiao.”

Xing Lou stood up abruptly, with a look of disbelief on his face. “Impossible! Where’s Yue Ying?!”

Yue Ying remained motionless. Xing Lou struggled to reach out, but the person had no breath left. Ling Xiao lowered his head in disbelief, looking at his own chest. “He’s here, I can feel it. His life has disappeared, but a part of his consciousness remains here.”

It was endless and everlasting hatred towards the Tianxiu people. Even if he had perished, his will lingered.

Xing Lou’s eyes were red with anger as he glared at Zhu Yue. The latter was startled and took a step back. “No, this can’t be…”

He quickly checked the instrument and found that someone had moved the pointer representing the retention object. It originally pointed to A but now pointed to B. Such a slight change could affect the outcome of the entire experiment.

“Someone tampered with my instrument.” Zhu Yue’s voice changed. “Who?!”

His device was locked in his room, and he fetched it personally. Apart from Zhen He, no one could enter. But Zhu Yue, who never fully trusted Zhen He, had early on placed a suggestion on him that if he had any ill intentions, he would be electrocuted.

A shadow moved in the dark, seemingly trying to take the opportunity to escape. Xing Lou caught it sharply. “Is it you?!”

Zhu Yue also turned his head immediately. Seeing Lan Sheng, he couldn’t believe he was the culprit.

“How did you do it? Who told you…” Zhu Yue’s voice stopped abruptly as he suddenly thought of someone. Lan Sheng knew it would be difficult to leave with Ling Xiao intact, so he took out a dagger and made a desperate charge at Xing Lou.

Bang—

There was a loud noise. Lan Sheng looked in surprise at the hole the size of a fist in his chest, then at himself, and finally at Ling Xiao. The dagger from Ping Zong slipped from his hand, signaling the toll of death. “Lan Sheng!” Ling Xiao screamed in anguish.

Xing Lou repeatedly fired, and Lan Sheng’s body kept twitching until the gun’s energy was completely drained.

“Enough! Stop it!” Ling Xiao screamed hoarsely but couldn’t prevent it from happening.

Lan Sheng’s eyelids gradually drooped, and countless blue light spots emerged from his body, just like that morning when Ping Zong appeared in front of him.

“Ling Xiao…” A weak Lan Sheng called his name.

“I’m sorry…” Was it too late to say these words now? Tears streamed down Ling Xiao’s face, and he couldn’t utter a complete sentence.

Lan Sheng closed his eyes and fell forward.

“Ping Zong, I’ve missed you for so long. Now I can finally forget you…”

Fragments gathered into a light ball, penetrated the spaceship’s shell, and flew into the vast universe. Inside a nearby ship, someone immediately reported the latest discovery.

“Report! Signs of soul reincarnation detected!”

Ying Feng and others rushed to the command post, watching a soul fly like a meteor towards the direction of Tianxiu.

No longer able to contain his impatience, Ying Feng tightly gripped his right hand and left the spaceship.

“Hey!” Fu Yao couldn’t stop him in time and immediately ordered, “Follow him!”

Xing Lou held the lifeless body of Yue Ying, tears dropping one by one onto his motionless face.

“I waited for you for thousands of years, yet you couldn’t spare more than a day for me…”

The Eagle began to shake violently, with electric sparks flying everywhere and flames erupting.

Zhu Yue sensed something was wrong and looked up. “Damn, he activated the self-destruct program!”

He dropped everything and ran towards the lower deck, shouting the name of his Qizi.

“Zhen He!”

A shuttlecraft stopped in front of him, its hatch opened, revealing the person inside.

Seeing him, Zhu Yue let out a sigh of relief and quickly jumped in.

“Let’s go. This place is about to explode!”

Zhen He waited for him to enter, calmly closed the hatch, and started the engine. The shuttlecraft sped away from the spaceship, and within seconds, the exploding Eagle was left behind.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Zhu Yue remarked, “He actually wanted to die alongside Ling Xiao in his fledgling state. What a lunatic, I won’t accompany him in that.”

Looking at Zhen He beside him, his voice turned menacing. “It was you, right? You tampered with the instruments using Lan Sheng, ruining my plan.”

“You just wanted revenge on Ying Feng and Ling Xiao. Isn’t breaking the blood pact and dissipating their soul enough?”

Zhu Yue was about to retaliate when Zhen He continued, “If Yue Ying had survived, they would have targeted you next. Even if you left Tianxiu, they wouldn’t let you go. But now, no one can stop us. We can, as you said, go to a new planet, forget the past, and start a new life.”

Zhu Yue stared at him for a long moment, his demeanor softening. He murmured, “Fine.”

“Even though I know this is because of the genes inside you that are loyal to the nation, I’m already pleased that you’ve thought of such an excuse for my sake.”

Contentedly, he closed his eyes. His goal of revenge against Ying Feng was achieved. Compared to the bright future Zhen He painted, the survival of this planet was no longer significant. Let those artificial beings continue their foolish and ignorant existence.

The shuttlecraft initiated its first warp. After a while, Zhu Yue opened his eyes, sensing something amiss.

“Where are you taking us?”

“Of course, to a new planet,” Zhen He calmly replied.

Zhu Yue frowned, noticing the auto-navigation of the shuttlecraft and its representation blinking on the star map.

“Where did you set the destination?” Zhu Yue felt strangely heavy.

“To a very, very distant planet.” Zhen He leaned back. “So far that our souls will vanish, never to return.”

“What?!” Zhu Yue exclaimed in shock and anger. “Why would you do this?!”

“Because as a Qizi, I can’t harm you. Even if I could, I wouldn’t want you to reincarnate so easily. So, I’m taking you to a place without reincarnation, to face true death.”

“Stop this!” Zhu Yue reached out, the red emergency stop button glaringly prominent. Yet his movements became stiffer, and he could only watch, paralyzed, as the button remained just out of reach.

“Just give up.” Zhen He’s movements also became sluggish, even his speech was affected. “This place is filled with a gas that paralyzes the Tianxiu people. Even you can’t resist its effects.”

Zhu Yue’s hand grew heavier, barely touching the edge of the button before falling limply.

“Just enjoy the last moments of your life.” Zhen He mustered all his strength to lift his palm, placing it over Zhu Yue’s hand. “At least this time, I’m with you.”

Explosions echoed within the Eagle. Ling Xiao, connected to unknown wires, sat next to Xing Lou, who still clung to Yue Ying, oblivious to the violent shakes and falling debris.

Ying Feng teleported inside without hesitation. The interior of the spaceship was collapsing, with flames and obstacles blocking his path.

He finally found Ling Xiao, sitting in a chair with an unknown device on his head.

Ling Xiao also noticed him, thinking it was a hallucination as he approached death. He was speechless for a while.

“…Ling Xiao?” Ying Feng hesitantly asked.

Only then did Ling Xiao believe it wasn’t an illusion, and with a silly grin, he replied, “It’s me.”

Ying Feng heaved a long sigh of relief, activated the soul crystal in his hand, forcefully pried open the metal that bound Ling Xiao, and swiftly helped him regain his freedom.

“Let’s go. We need to get out of here.” Ying Feng grabbed his hand, ready to lead him away.

“It’s useless.” The previously silent Xing Lou suddenly spoke up.

Ying Feng had no interest in hearing him out. As he took a step, Xing Lou’s voice followed.

“He will soon disappear from this moment in time, joining me, going back thousands of years to the very beginning of your existence.”

“What?” Ying Feng turned around in shock.

Xing Lou murmured, “I waited for thousands of years, only to face this ending. I want you to feel the same pain, to understand the agony of waiting for a millennium.”

Only then did Ying Feng notice the wires connected from Ling Xiao’s hand to Xing Lou. He immediately tried to sever it.

“It’s too late. He will be forever adrift in the fissures of time, until he dissipates in the river of history.”

Xing Lou lowered his head, gazing at Yue Ying with reluctance. “Time is running out. If you have any last words, say them now, lest you regret it when it’s too late.”

Ying Feng turned to the person next to him in disbelief, sensing Ling Xiao’s uncontrollable trembling hand.

Ling Xiao raised Ying Feng’s hand, their fingers intertwined tightly. They existed in each other’s eyes, sharing the same shade of gray.

The surrounding flames made Ling Xiao’s face glow, and never had he appeared more radiant.

It felt like someone was squeezing Ying Feng’s heart, pushing the oxygen up inch by inch, nearly suffocating him.

This person was the past-life companion he had been searching for and the one he had in this life but lost again.

Tears welled up in Ling Xiao’s eyes, but he revealed the most beautiful smile.

“Ying Feng, I like you. I’ve liked you for a very long time.”

“It feels so good to say this as an equal.”

“Ling Xiao!”

Ying Feng’s hand felt empty, and the person in front of him vanished. He desperately called out the name, but Ling Xiao was nowhere to be found in the world.

Chapter 105

Ling Xiao, lying on the bed, slowly opened his eyes. Lan Sheng nervously crouched beside the bed. After confirming his gray eyes, he sighed in relief. Meanwhile, Zhu Yue stood arrogantly by the side. Seeing this, he smirked in ridicule.

Ling Xiao looked at the two of them—one towering above and the other lower. They met in Bikong and spent their fledgling period there, experiencing friendship and conflicts. Lan Sheng always looked down on Zhu Yue. He even had a big fight with him when Zhu Yue insulted Lan Sheng. However, no matter what, those young and impulsive fledglings never harbored such immense malice towards others, treating lives like grass. After leaving the gates of Bikong, their paths diverged, and they could never return to the old days.

Lan Sheng grabbed Ling Xiao’s hand and tentatively called out. “Ling Xiao?”

Ling Xiao closed his eyes. He couldn’t move, but at least he could choose not to see.

Lan Sheng seemed disappointed, but he didn’t give up, whispering, “I know it’s hard for you to accept this now, but it’s okay. I’ll be with you until you find yourself.”

Zhu Yue left and came back with another syringe. Lan Sheng defensively stood up and pushed him, asking, “What are you doing?”

Zhu Yue clearly disapproved of Lan Sheng’s actions and warned, “Just because I couldn’t beat you in Bikong doesn’t mean I can’t now. If you care about your friend, step aside.”

Facing the taller Zhu Yue, Lan Sheng still stood in front of Ling Xiao, insisting, “I need to know what you’re injecting him with!”

“Have you never been through the tumultuous phase?” Zhu Yue mocked. “The presence of another soul in one’s body causes rejection. I’m just kindly giving him a sedative.”

Lan Sheng was skeptical about Zhu Yue’s intentions, but the term “tumultuous phase” startled him, leading him to reluctantly step aside. Zhu Yue, seeing Lan Sheng’s concession, was pleased.

The supposedly sedative, transparent liquid was injected into Ling Xiao, but he soon realized something was wrong. This wasn’t a sedative. Every inch of him felt like it was about to explode in pain. However, the drug must contain sedative components because, despite the pain, he couldn’t move at all. Lan Sheng, deceived by this facade, believed Zhu Yue’s words and was oblivious to Ling Xiao’s agony.

After dealing with Ling Xiao, Zhu Yue also gave Yue Ying a shot. Yue Ying’s body seemed frail, showing clear signs of exhaustion.

“It’s done.” Zhu Yue glanced at the time. “You two should rest. The nobler the lineage of the ancient Tianxiu blood, the weaker the body. After such a long journey from the genetic center to here, it must be the limit for you, right?”

Xing Lou, surprisingly, didn’t object and pushed Yue Ying away. Ling Xiao, though paralyzed, was still keen of hearing. He found it odd how both of them obeyed Zhu Yue. Zhu Yue’s words to Yue Ying were even weirder.

Ling Xiao’s mind was still racing with concerns for others, even in his critical state. Lan Sheng leaned close, whispering, “You should rest too.”

His next words were even softer, and Ling Xiao suspected only he could hear. “Once you wake up, I’ll take you away from here.”

Ling Xiao wished he could tell him how naive he was. What made him believe they would be let go?

As he heard Lan Sheng’s departing footsteps, someone adjusted his bed, forcing him to sit up. Opening his eyes, he saw it was Zhu Yue.

Zhu Yue squatted down in front of him.

“Does it hurt? Body modification is not a comfortable thing. I’ve experienced the same pain.” His eyes drifted to the side, seemingly reminiscing the past. “It’s a pity that it was a long time ago, and I can’t quite remember. So, I can’t share in your pain. What a regret.”

Though he spoke so, his expression clearly indicated regret, not for the other’s pain but because he couldn’t derive greater pleasure from it.

“But don’t worry. This process is quick. Soon you won’t feel any pain; in fact, you won’t feel anything.” Zhu Yue’s voice grew colder. “Because you will disappear from this world.”

Ling Xiao found he could speak gradually. “Who… are you…”

Zhu Yue answered indifferently, “Remember that off-campus internship in Bikong? It was during that internship that you and Ying Feng met the Kui.”

How could Ling Xiao forget? That was one of the most profound memories in his life.

“I accidentally obtained the soul stone of that Kui. Have you ever heard of the legend about the soul stone? It contains ancient history, and if you possess it, you can recover memories from a thousand years ago.”

Ling Xiao had heard, but he thought it was just a legend.

“Let me tell you, that legend is true.”

“You mean…?”

“Yes.” Zhu Yue knew what Ling Xiao wanted to ask. “I have memories of my soul’s first life. What Yue Ying told you was just a story to you, but for me, it was a personal experience.”

“I witnessed the prosperity of the ancient Tianxiu, the revolt of the artificial humans, the fall of the imperial power, and the birth of the Republic. My memories are even more direct than Yue Ying’s because he was frozen early on, but I saw everything firsthand. I saw my race being destroyed by you.”

Ling Xiao was taken aback. “You aren’t a Tianxiu?”

Zhu Yue stood up. “I should say I am the real Tianxiu. With your powerful forces, you sought to exterminate us who were powerless. To survive, I had to abandon my body, obtain immortality in my Qizi, and through reincarnations, I forgot that I was a Tianxiu.”

Ling Xiao finally understood why Zhu Yue had such rare pale yellow hair and why he seemed so weak compared to them. A bold speculation sprouted in his heart.

“You want me to keep Yue Ying alive?”

“Yes, our unfortunate prince contracted a rare disease before he reached adulthood. The medical science of that era couldn’t help. As a last resort, they froze his body, hoping future medical advancements could cure him.”

“But today’s medicine…”

“How could it cure his disease?” Zhu Yue finished his sentence. “Without treatment, even if Yue Ying awakens, he won’t live for more than six months. Now you know why Xing Lou collaborates with me, right? Because he needs me. Without me, his thousand-year wait would be in vain.”

“And you? Do you want revenge like Yue Ying?”

Zhu Yue’s eyes softened, an emotion rarely seen. Ling Xiao wondered if he was mistaken.

“My wish is simple. Initially, I just wanted those who looked down on me to see me differently, to make those who rejected me regret it. I used to think that not being looked down upon was everything in life. Now, I realize how naive that was.”

Zhen He came down holding a box. As he and Zhu Yue faced each other, Ling Xiao understood the source of that rare tenderness.

“Due to my inherent flaws, after awakening, I’ve always been ridiculed and bullied. Even when I willingly offered my heart’s blood, no one wanted it. You were the first person who paid attention to me without mocking. Even knowing you were deceiving me, I was happy.”

Facing Zhu Yue’s heartfelt confession, Zhen He remained silent; his expression looked like he was smiling but not.

“Once Yue Ying possesses Ling Xiao’s body, he will surely begin his revenge, plunging this planet into chaos and bloodshed. Thousands of years have passed, and I’ve long regarded myself as a Tianxiu person, and the grudge of extermination was diluted by time. Now, I don’t care how others see me. I don’t want to be dragged into war. I just want to live with the person I like.” He placed his hand on Zhen He’s chest. “Can we forget about today and start over?”

“Would you still meet your first love?” Zhen He raised an eyebrow.

The previously gentle-faced Zhu Yue quickly turned cold. “Of course, I spent so much time and laid so many plans just for this moment. I want him to regret, to experience unbearable pain.”

His words were delivered with such vehemence that it was as if he were a completely different person from a moment ago.

But in the blink of an eye, he smiled sweetly again.

“After this is over, let’s go to another planet, away from all this, alright?”

After a moment, Zhen He responded to him, “Alright.”

A simple answer made Zhu Yue smile brightly. He tiptoed and tightly hugged Zhen He’s neck. The person being hugged didn’t move, with an expression on his face that Ling Xiao couldn’t understand.

Ling Xiao was startled by Zhu Yue’s unpredictable behavior and began to feel some sympathy for Zhen He. Living with such a neurotic master would drive anyone insane sooner or later; no wonder he wanted to break the blood pact.

After the embrace, Zhu Yue let go of Zhen He and waved at Ling Xiao.

“Ying Feng, have you seen enough?”

Ling Xiao stiffened, realizing that Zhu Yue had known all along. What he had said wasn’t only meant for himself but also for Ying Feng.

“Is your mental strength still enough? Let me help you save some.”

Zhu Yue connected a video call with the ship where Ying Feng was, and Ying Feng’s image appeared on the screen.

Ling Xiao finally saw Ying Feng again. Through the screen, their deep gray eyes met, and even though it had only been two days, it felt like an eternity.

“Ying Feng!”

He exclaimed happily and then saw a small head squeezing onto the screen below. “Xiao Hui! Are you okay?”

Xiao Hui whined anxiously and pitifully in response, extending its right claw to fiddle with the screen, not understanding why Ling Xiao was behind a mirror.

Ying Feng leaned over and placed his hand on the screen, his thumb tracing the edge of Ling Xiao’s eye. He had lost the ability of his bond, but fortunately, the soul crystal that allowed sensory sharing still worked. Because of that, he felt all the pain that Ling Xiao endured, yet he was powerless to help.

Zhu Yue wasn’t pleased with their loving gaze and rudely stepped in between. “We meet again. Last time I sought you out, you said you were busy. Do you have time now?”

Ying Feng withdrew his hand. “I don’t recall doing anything that would warrant such calculated revenge from you.”

“Of course you don’t remember. Every word I’ve said to you is probably forgotten, right? But no worries. At least I can help you recall one incident.”

“Once in Bikong, I was attacked by a senior student. You drove him away, but I ended up stabbing you. Your blood spilled onto the ground and attracted the nearby blood. You were frantic, asking whose blood it was. That was the first time I saw you so unsettled. Do you remember?”

Listening in, Ling Xiao was taken aback. Blood attracting each other was a sign of past life partners recognizing one another. So, Ying Feng had once encountered this person in school, but why hadn’t he searched for him?

“I remember,” Ying Feng answered coldly. “You said you didn’t see.”

“What if I said I lied to you?”

Ying Feng narrowed his eyes.

“I knew whose blood it was and later found out why blood attracts. You were so desperate for the truth back then. Don’t you want to know who your lover from the past life was?”

The pain in Ling Xiao’s heart surpassed his physical pain. He knew of Ying Feng’s obsession. Even though he had buried the peach core, he surely wanted the truth.

He was prepared to hear an affirmative response but heard Ying Feng calmly reply:

“No.”

Ling Xiao looked up sharply, meeting Ying Feng’s gaze, unable to believe he would pass up this opportunity.

“Why not?” Zhu Yue tilted his head. “Ling Xiao will soon be no more, and you’ve regained your freedom. Don’t you want to take this chance and find your old love from a past life?”

“No,” Ying Feng said slowly. “No matter who was by my side in the past, in this life, my only Qizi is Ling Xiao.”

Zhu Yue hung his head low, letting out a few eerie laughs.

Ying Feng was displeased. “Why do you laugh?”

“What if I told you that the person you’ve been desperately searching for is Ling Xiao?”

Both of their expressions shifted.

“Impossible.” Ying Feng denied it first, as they had clearly tested it when they were at the base.

“I don’t know why you’re so certain, but I swear by what I’ve seen with my own eyes.”

Zhu Yan took a box from Zhen He and placed it on the table, rotating it 180 degrees towards Ying Feng. “To prove I’m not lying, I’ve carefully prepared this for you.”

He opened the box, and a cold mist billowed out. After the mist dissipated, two test tubes were revealed side by side.

“What’s this?” Ying Feng didn’t understand. Ling Xiao couldn’t see due to the obstruction and was eager to know what it was.

“I have been looking forward to this day for a year.” Zhu Yue slowly pulled out the test tubes. “Tai Yin once drew blood samples from everyone on Tianxiu to type-match with Yue Ying’s blood. This is what I specially asked Xing Lou to retain: the blood samples of you two in your fledgling state.”

He lifted the test tubes, and indeed, their names were labeled on them.

“One of the conditions to verify a past life relationship is that the Qizi must be in its fledgling state.”

Zhu Yan elegantly poured the blood from the two test tubes onto the smooth table, and the two blood puddles remained still.

Ying Feng’s face darkened. “There’s no change at all.”

“Why the hurry? It’s not time yet.” Zhu Yue raised his right hand in the air intoxicatingly, stimulating a gesture of holding hands. “Back then, he just grabbed the dagger with his bare hand like this. I watched his blood drip in front of me…”

Ling Xiao’s face turned pale. He remembered that incident when he was injured trying to save Zhu Yue, mistakenly thinking that Ying Feng was concerned about Zhu Yue.

“Your long-sought lover from the past life will soon be revealed. Are you excited?”

“Unfortunately, whether it’s a lover from a past life or your patterner in this life, you will end up with nothing.”

Zhu Yue walked a few steps away from the window. They were currently on the dark side of the Tianxiu planet, shielded from the rays of the burning sun.

“People often associate darkness with despair and dawn with hope.”

“Ying Feng, from now on, every time you see sunlight, I want you to feel endless despair.”

He closed his eyes, spread his arms, and as the spaceship moved out of the shadow of the Tianxiu planet, the light of the distant star passed over the planet’s curve and defiantly squeezed in from the gap under his arm, shining on the two dark red puddles on the table.

It seemed as if the sunlight gently blew a breath into the air, and one of the blood samples began to slowly flow towards the other. This bond from their previous lives resisted the purification pool’s cleansing and had remained for twenty years. Those unforgettable memories still lingered in their instincts. Upon seeing their past life lover, they wanted to get closer without any reservations.

The blood on the screen eventually merged intimately. Interwoven and inseparable.

Ying Feng’s face turned pale. He staggered, supporting himself on the console.

Zhu Yue covered his face, his shoulders shaking, a suppressed laugh coming from deep within his throat. Gradually, the laughter grew louder and more piercing. After waiting for so long, he could finally return all the frustration this person gave him. He laughed like a madman until the entire spaceship was enveloped by his distorted laughter, drowning out all other sounds.

Qizi Ch104

Chapter 104

Ling Xiao finally realized that the Lan Sheng before him was no longer receptive to anyone’s words. He wondered what Yue Ying had told Lan Sheng to make him believe so stubbornly that Ling Xiao was deep in trouble and desperately needed saving. Faced with this brainwashed version of Lan Sheng, Ling Xiao felt profound disappointment.

“When you jumped off the rooftop, it was because you refused to accept being a Qizi.”

“Do you think I should do the same, to match the Ling Xiao you have in your mind?”

“Lan Sheng, do you remember? Before you left, you warned me to always be cautious. It was your words that helped me survive the chaotic period. During my darkest days, you were the sole reason I held on. I’ve always tried to move in the direction you pointed out. Why did you end up right where you started?”

In response to Ling Xiao’s questions, Lan Sheng remained unmoved. “I won’t listen to anything you say now. Once you regain your free will, we can discuss other matters.”

As he turned to leave, Ling Xiao wanted to chase after him but was stopped. In desperation, Ling Xiao shouted, “By being so obstinate, are you doing justice to Ping Zong, who reincarnated for you?”

Lan Sheng hesitated for a moment but quickly left without looking back.

Ling Xiao was left alone. He was uncertain about the structure of this prison, where one’s mental powers were completely dispersed and couldn’t be focused. Considering that the original owner of this starship was Tai Yin, no technology would come as a surprise.

A glint appeared in the depths of his consciousness, and Ling Xiao quickly focused. He had sensed Ying Feng trying to connect with him using a soul crystal earlier but had pretended not to notice due to the presence of others. He knew Ying Feng would try to connect again.

“Ling Xiao, can you hear me? Blink twice if you can.”

Ying Feng’s vision blinked out for two seconds, signaling Ling Xiao’s acknowledgement.

“Survey your surroundings, but don’t be obvious.”

Ling Xiao subtly looked around, letting Ying Feng get a clear view.

“No enemies in sight, but there might be surveillance. Don’t talk and keep your movements minimal.”

“Other than Lan Sheng, Yue Ying, and Xing Lou, did you see anyone else?” Ying Feng asked.

Ling Xiao discreetly wrote in his palm: No.

“Do you know your approximate location?”

I only know I’m likely on the Eagle. Nothing more.

“Do you know why they kidnapped you?”

After some hesitation, Ling Xiao wrote: Yue Ying, who holds a deep grudge against us. I’m the person most easily controlled by him. He may want to use me to complete his revenge. However, I’m just speculating. How could I possibly possess such power alone?

Ying Feng frowned. “Understood. Avoid confronting Yue Ying; he’s powerful. We can’t let him directly control you. I need to reserve my energy to trace you, so I’ll have to disconnect.”

Wait!

Ling Xiao quickly wrote.

Ying Feng paused. “What is it?”

Ling Xiao hesitated, then swiftly wrote:

I can clearly sense emotions coming from Yue Ying. His hatred for us is intensifying.

It’s overpowering, overshadowing all other emotions. I fear that, over time, my will might not withstand it, and I’ll be assimilated by him.

If I do get controlled and turn against our own, please…

Kill me.

Ying Feng paused for a long while. Finally, on his own palm and also on Ling Xiao’s palm, he wrote stroke by stroke:

Okay.

Ling Xiao placed his hand over his heart, feeling its beat, believing that Ying Feng must have received the message.

Ying Feng gritted his teeth, disconnected the link, and left the lounge.

“I have rested. Let’s continue.”

Just after his connection with Ying Feng was terminated, Zhen He entered.

Ling Xiao looked at the suddenly appearing person and was momentarily stunned. It took him a while to hesitantly call out, “…Zhen He?”

Zhen He sneered coldly without answering.

Yes, how could Ling Xiao forget? He and Tai Yin were originally on the same side. What surprised Ling Xiao even more was, “Your eyes…?”

Zhen He’s face darkened instantly. “Mind your own business.”

He pressed a button, and mechanisms appeared inside the cage. Ling Xiao tried to dodge, but mechanical arms from all directions restrained him, pinning him firmly to a bed before sliding him out.

“Where are you taking me?”

Ling Xiao struggled fiercely but couldn’t move. He was pushed by Zhen He into another room. Lan Sheng, Yue Ying, Xing Lou, and all the others he had met before were there.

“What the hell do you want to do?” Ling Xiao felt uneasy. He initially thought Yue Ying wanted to control him mentally, but now it seemed otherwise.

“I hope you’d be a bit quieter,” Yue Ying said. “Controlling you is easy for me, but I don’t want you to face the most important moment of your life without knowing.”

“What important moment? I don’t understand what you’re talking about!”

As Ling Xiao tried to buy time, he discreetly exerted force, but the restraints held him tight. If only he had a soul crystal now.

Yue Ying reached out, and Xing Lou handed him a bottle containing a soul. He released the soul, holding it in his palm.

“What is that?” Ling Xiao asked.

Ignoring the question, Yue Ying said, “No wonder he’s a scientific genius. Tai Yin studied for decades and finally found a way to break the blood pact. Unfortunately, he didn’t live to see this day.”

Ling Xiao was taken aback. “What do you mean?”

“To break the blood pact, one of the requirements is a newborn soul. Nowadays, a soul matures only once every hundred years. If Shang Yang had waited another nine months, perhaps he’d be the one successfully breaking the blood pact now.”

“You’re using a soul to break the blood pact?” Ling Xiao was in disbelief. “Even if it’s not fully formed, it’s still a life!”

Yue Ying laughed coldly, seemingly dismissing the idea of such a “life”. To him, it was merely a man-made product, no different from computers or tablets.

Ling Xiao angrily confronted the others, “Even if Yue Ying isn’t one of us, you are of the Tianxiu race. Do you just stand by and watch him kill our kin?”

“I am not like you. Don’t get it wrong,” Xing Lou said calmly. “I will always stand with the true Tianxiu people.”

Ling Xiao turned to Zhen He, who was intently staring at the soul in Yue Ying’s hand, his eyes filled with a hint of greed.

Lastly, he looked at Lan Sheng. “Lan Sheng, even you…?”

Lan Sheng turned his head away.

Ling Xiao continued to question Yue Ying, “I don’t understand, why do you want me to break the blood pact? What’s in it for you?”

“You’ll understand.” Yue Ying handed the soul to Xing Lou, who carefully held it and placed it into a peculiar container.

“Stop!” Ling Xiao shouted.

A piercing scream sounded. All the Tianxiu people present covered their ears, except for Ling Xiao, who was immobilized and could only turn his head away in pain, his face contorted in agony.

Yue Ying looked at them curiously. “What’s wrong with you?”

It took Xing Lou a long time to put his hand down, almost having his eardrums pierced by the scream, “Didn’t you hear?”

“Hear what?”

“A scream.”

Yue Ying shook his head, looking puzzled.

Ling Xiao finally recovered, breathing slightly due to holding his breath for too long.

“So, before a soul disappears, it screams,” Yue Ying said, as if discovering something new. “How interesting.”

Ling Xiao could only glare at him; this person didn’t equate a soul with life at all.

The soul in the container had disappeared, turning into a bright blue liquid. Xing Lou drew it into a syringe. The liquid filled less than two-thirds of the syringe, yet it caused a soul to completely vanish from this world.

“It’s ready.” As Xing Lou turned around, a figure flashed in front of him.

Zhen He had already assessed the strength of the people present. Xing Lou and Lan Sheng weren’t his match. As long as he didn’t look into Yue Ying’s eyes, he wouldn’t be controlled. This was what Zhu Yue taught him.

Xing Lou seemed to anticipate someone trying to snatch it and quickly jumped back, but Zhen He managed to kick his wrist. The syringe containing the soul liquid was thrown into the air, and Zhen He teleported to catch it.

The situation changed dramatically. Neither Ling Xiao nor Lan Sheng expected Zhen He to act so suddenly. One was surprised, and the other wanted to snatch it back, but they couldn’t match his speed. They could only watch as Zhen He turned his wrist in mid-air and was about to inject himself as he landed.

However, in a split second, his movement halted, his right hand trembling from exertion.

Ling Xiao was all too familiar with this scene. When a Qizhu uses mind control, a Qizi reacts this way.

Xing Lou and Yue Ying, however, seemed unsurprised, as if they had anticipated all of this.

Struggling, Zhen He looked up to see Zhu Yue slowly descending the stairs.

“You said… you didn’t want… to show up here…” He had held on for so long, thinking Zhu Yue had let down his guard. He had believed Zhu Yue’s claim of not wanting to see Yue Ying.

“If I hadn’t said that, how would I know if you intended to betray me?” Zhu Yue approached, effortlessly taking the syringe from his hand. “You’ve waited for this moment for a long time, haven’t you? I just wanted to test if, after all this time, you still wanted to end our bond.”

Zhu Yue’s eyes genuinely showed disappointment. “You really let me down.”

Releasing Zhen He from his control, Zhen He stared at him with resentment but was powerless against him.

Xing Lou, who once promised to be on his side, had even helped Zhu Yue test him. It seemed that no one could be trusted in this world except oneself.

Xing Lou sensed Zhen He’s anger but deliberately avoided his gaze. Zhen He was no longer of value to him, but he still needed Zhu Yue for something crucial.

Zhu Yue turned around, and Ling Xiao, who had found him familiar from the beginning, now stared in shock.

“Zhu Yue?”

“Surprising, isn’t it?” Zhu Yue’s demeanor had completely changed, icy cold. “I never thought we’d meet under these circumstances.”

“You’re Zhen He’s Qizhu?” Ling Xiao looked back and forth between them, unable to believe they were together.

“It’s all thanks to you. If you hadn’t formed a pact with Ying Feng, how could I become someone else’s Qizhu?”

The other person he spoke of looked like he wanted to kill him with just a glance.

“Are you done?” Yue Ying interrupted their conversation. “Who would have thought so many people would fight over this little thing. Does anyone else need it?”

He asked Lan Sheng, “What about you? You probably need it the most here. With one injection, you won’t have to suffer anymore. You can find someone to form a new pact and become a Qizhu. Isn’t that good?”

Lan Sheng had been nervous when he saw Zhen He take the syringe, but now he calmly refused.

“I don’t need it. I promised Ping Zong to stay alive. These eyes are our last connection, and I don’t want to lose them. But you promised to free Ling Xiao. Don’t go back on your word.”

“Of course.” Yue Ying surveyed the room. “So, no one else has any objections?”

“I do!” Ling Xiao shouted.

Yue Ying laughed. “There’s a saying in our country: those who desire something never get it, and those who don’t often do. Isn’t that right?” He looked at Ling Xiao and Zhen He.

The current state of Ying Feng was a bit concerning. Due to the prolonged consumption of his mental power, large beads of sweat were sliding down his cheeks, dripping onto the control panel. Under his palms, the radar’s circle of light was gradually shrinking.

“We’re almost locked onto the target—only 20% left!” someone reported.

The fleet was moving at full speed towards the area Ying Feng had marked, but 20% was still a vast region. To find Ling Xiao, the area needed to be narrowed down even further.

Yue Ying gestures towards Zhu Yue. “Get on with it.”

Zhu Yue walked step by step towards the immobilized Ling Xiao, with the blue light slowly flowing in the syringe he held.

Ling Xiao was struggling with all his might, Lan Sheng was anxiously watching, and Zhen He, under the double control of Yue Ying and Zhu Yue, couldn’t move at all.

“I’m so glad that I get to end this for you.” Zhu Yue held up the syringe, pushing out a bit of the liquid. “You know, I’ve prepared a special gift for Ying Feng. I believe he will love it.”

“We’re very close!” A voice came from the Burning Shadow, invigorating everyone.

Ying Feng closed his eyes, concentrating all his mental energy in his palms. His mental power was being rapidly drained, but he couldn’t stop now. His Qizi was still waiting for him.

Ling Xiao!

Ling Xiao shivered; he heard Ying Feng’s voice, not through shared senses but through a soulful connection. Ying Feng was nearby!

I can hear you! He wished he could tell Ying Feng this, but he couldn’t make a sound.

Ying Feng’s voice continuously reached him.

Ling Xiao, hang in there. I’ll find you very soon.

Ling Xiao closed his eyes. I believe you. No matter where I am, you can always find me.

The pain of the needle piercing his skin reached him. It turned out the temperature of the soul was also cold.

“Say goodbye to your Qizhu.” Along with Zhu Yue’s voice, it felt like something was moving away from him.

Suddenly, the signal on the radar disappeared. Everyone looks at Ying Feng. They were so close to success. Could it be that his mental power is already exhausted?

Ying Feng opens his eyes, equally puzzled. Something had gone missing from his life—something that was within reach just a second ago.

The pilot closest to him cries out in surprise:

“Ah, your eyes…”

Confused, Ying Feng turned around, and now everyone in the room saw it: the blackness in his eyes was slowly receding, like clear water dissolving thick ink, as night welcomed dawn. When the change finally stopped, all that remained were the ash-gray eyes characteristic of a fledgling.
