Chapter 22: There’s Something There

Zhu Yanchen once said that the Erosion Swamps could be likened to a pack of wolves, with a giant Erosion Swamp resembling the alpha. This “alpha” in its mouth was most likely another alpha-level Erosion Swamp.

The creature in front of them, which seemed to be an Erosion Swamp, didn’t seem much stronger than Monday, but its’ intelligence wasn’t in the same league. Shu Jun never feared battle, nor was he afraid of such a strange creature. But “recklessness” and “bravery” weren’t synonymous, and he would only suffer if he attacked rashly in the midst of being blinded.

It was better to take a step back and take a page out of the Thirty-Six Stratagems*, so Shu Jun reached out to pull Zhu Yanchen, but the latter seemed to be nailed to the ground and didn’t move.

*Proverb referring to the thirty-six stratagems of ancient Chinese military tactics. It implies that sometimes retreat or avoiding conflict can be the most advantageous course of action.

Zhu Yanchen was good at fighting ordinary mutant beasts, but the fact that he lacked front-line experience meant that he was inevitably scared. Shu Jun rubbed his hands and was about to directly carry him away, but Zhu Yanchen neatly pulled out his gun and turned on the flashlight with his other hand.

…He was wrong. Marshal Zhu probably grew ten times more courageous.

The beam of light pierced through the thin fog, illuminating the face of the creature in front of them.

Although Shu Jun had seen many monsters before, he still shuddered in place. At this moment, he truly understood the saying, “Anything could appear in the ruins of a city that humans haven’t set foot in for two hundred years.”

The creature’s skin had a texture similar to that of humans, with a deep gray-black color. Despite its bent and twisted limbs, he could still vaguely make out the structure of its arms and legs. He couldn’t distinguish the teardrop-shaped body of where its head and torso were, and its gray-black membranes covered rib-like structures, with human facial features scattered randomly on the skin, like a jumbled puzzle.

One of the human eyes faced the beam of light and squinted slightly.

Shu Jun swallowed loudly. Compared to this thing, the previous mutant beasts were quite pleasing to the eye. Even the Corpse Parasite, which everyone called for extermination, was as docile and cute as a kitten when compared to this thing.

Even Monday expressed its feelings at the right time. “Wow.”

Only Zhu Yanchen nodded calmly, observing very carefully, as if facing a newly born foal. He even opened his briefcase on the spot, taking out more and more things with the air of a zoologist discovering a new species. Shu Jun could feel the monster’s suspicion, and for a moment, he understood its feelings.

The monster hesitated for a while, then took a few steps closer, slightly lowering its body and swaying ominously. Zhu Yanchen glanced at it and held his gun in his hand. His movements became faster as he operated the machinery, but he didn’t intend to leave.

“Let’s retreat first,” Shu Jun called out.

Zhu Yanchen, who was always calm, shook his head. He stared at the monster, with a hint of strange fanaticism in his movements. “Wait a little longer. It’s okay, this is not an alpha-level Erosion Swamp.”

After a long while, as if he had remembered something, he added seriously, “I won’t die.”

The monster got closer—only about ten steps away from Zhu Yanchen. Its eyes, which resembled those of a human, were vertical and blinked as it focused on Marshal Zhu. Shu Jun recognized the emotional fluctuations; it was the concentration before the hunt.

Shu Jun took a deep breath and then smoothly exploded—

He had seen the handcuffs in the briefcase earlier. Now, Shu Jun pulled out the handcuffs and swiftly put them on Zhu Yanchen. Marshal Zhu was caught off guard and was lifted by Shu Jun in the next second and pressed onto the cargo rail.

“Three days have passed.” Zhu Yanchen shook off the handcuffs as he saw Shu Jun quickly hoist the sail.

“It’s calculated according to the hours we’re chained together.” Shu Jun’s face turned dark as he activated his skills—they really didn’t need Uncle Xiong’s dogs. With the blowing wind in their sails, their sled was fast enough to fly, and the monster was instantly left far behind. “What were you doing just now? Are you courting death?”

“An alpha-level Erosion Swamp couldn’t lead the charge alone. That was a low-level Erosion Swamp; it couldn’t hurt you, and I wouldn’t be killed either.” Marshal Zhu corrected seriously.

“Yes, it couldn’t hurt me, but who knows what abilities it has? I may not be able to protect you. Even if we can escape in time, you may still get injured—your last injury hasn’t healed properly yet. Will just saying ‘I won’t die’ solve the problem?”

Shu Jun harshly threw the briefcase at Zhu Yanchen.

“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking, Marshal Zhu. ‘This is just a low-level Erosion Swamp. It doesn’t matter if I get hurt. After all, my death is imminent, and there’s no need to worry about post-traumatic complications’. ” Shu Jun’s face became serious, and he lowered his voice as he imitated Zhu Yanchen’s tone. “… Hey, why are you turning your head? Look at me!”

Zhu Yanchen turned his head back, and his lips moved. In the end, he just sighed and stared at Shu Jun.

“If you still consider me a friend, don’t perform stunts in front of me where you can get hurt. Thanks to you, I have sent away many people in the past ten years without knowing it. I’ve seen enough.” Shu Jun’s tone was unusually cold. “I don’t know why you can’t tell me your reasons, but at least consider yourself a human, okay? Do you really think I’m just being polite when I say, ‘I want to help you stay alive’?”

Making sure they were far enough away, Shu Jun found a large rock as cover and stopped the sled.

“If you want to study, you can. I’ll go first and check it out. Worst case, I’ll capture one for you. If you keep getting too close to them, I’ll tie you up.”

“We are only in a cooperative relationship. Don’t forget your position.” Zhu Yanchen tightened the chain of the handcuffs.

Shu Jun didn’t hesitate. “Position? If you really played me from the beginning, and you died so easily, wouldn’t that be worse for me?”

Zhu Yanchen: “…I understand.” There was some truth in those words, but they were still a bit painful. He wanted to laugh again. The shell that had enveloped him for more than ten years had been pried open by the other person’s anger, and it hurt with bitterness.

Round and round they went, but in the end, it was still the same person.

He thought for a moment, reached out and grabbed Shu Jun’s wrist, and spoke in a solemn tone. “I’ll pay attention next time.”

“That’s more like it.”

Shu Jun patted the mud off his body, made a casual gesture, and the wind started blowing in the opposite direction. The mud sled was fast and stable, much more comfortable than when they were running away.

“Now let’s go back and talk about what’s going on in X City. Don’t try to fool me by saying ‘I don’t know the target’ again—walking deep into the erosion zone without care and seeing that thing just now without being surprised—this is not a death-defying adventure at all. You know the situation in X City.”

“I really don’t know the specific situation in the city. I just guessed that there was something there.” Zhu Yanchen pondered for a moment. “I didn’t expect the Erosion Swamp in X City to appear so early either.”

“Uh-huh.” Shu Jun propped his arm on the mud sled railing, holding half of his face with his palm.

“Two hundred years ago, Zhu Rong completed the player system in X City. As the capital at the time, X City was the first city in human history to use synthetic humans. However, the player system at that time wasn’t perfect, and it was not as mature as <Erosion>.”

“Oh, later there was a natural disaster, and the Erosion Swamps migrated from the east to X City. The residents fled to Y City. X City became one of the most severely eroded areas that even the players couldn’t go there.” Shu Jun took over the conversation. “I know these things too.”

“If it was a natural disaster, the giant Erosion Swamp wouldn’t stay in the city for a long time. X City is relatively dry and not suitable for them to inhabit.”

“But you guessed there was something in X City.” Shu Jun frowned.

“Yes, I suspect that the Erosion Swamp at the time is still there, and it wasn’t a natural disaster that destroyed X City, but a man-made disaster. However, there is too little information on Erosion Swamps at present, and my idea is ultimately just a guess without evidence.” Zhu Yanchen held the briefcase in his arms and struggled to get up from a pile of luggage. “As long as the situation in X City is confirmed, I can… Ngh.”

Just as Zhu Yanchen had just sat down, he leaned forward and curled up in pain. Shu Jun looked around. The surrounding darkness was empty, without any anomalies.

“The concentration of erosion substance is wrong,” Zhu Yanchen said with difficulty.

They were still on the outskirts of the erosion zone, and they hadn’t even returned to the river they had come from. How could the concentration of erosion substance suddenly increase? Unless…

Shu Jun’s back ran cold, and he instinctively raised the wind to blow the mud sled away from the boulder. In the next moment, the boulder moved.

Laughter rang out again, and the “boulder” slowly disintegrated. The monsters released their hands and feet, which they had been holding together, and chased after the mud sled. If Shu Jun’s reaction had been a second slower, they would have been caught by that group of monsters.

The appearance of those monsters was quite uniform, almost like they were all made from the same mold as the one by the riverbank.

Zhu Yanchen endured the pain, raised his gun, and stood back-to-back with Shu Jun, who was wielding his greatsword. Before he could adjust his posture, the strong wind blew up, splashing mud and water everywhere. Shu Jun hugged his waist again, and the two of them rushed into the sky together.

“Shh,” Shu Jun whispered in Zhu Yanchen’s ear.

Trying to ignore the warmth beside his ear, Zhu Yanchen looked down.

If it were someone else, they might scream directly. There was clearly no open land around them, with four-legged monsters everywhere, just leaving them with one way out. A group of monsters ran behind the sled, while a few others were secretly pulling it, as if they were guiding it in a specific direction.

“I controlled the water to form a mirage, using illusions to deceive them. If we stay on the sled, we won’t be discovered.” Shu Jun muttered softly. “Just a little trick. Luo Duan likes to use this move.”

“You made a substitute out of erosion substance?” Zhu Yanchen saw the two… what could be considered mud men on the mud sled, with blood-stained bandages wrapped around himself and Shun Jun.

“No one has seen these monsters before. They suddenly appeared, probably coming for me. Since they mistook me for their leader, they probably recognized me based on the characteristics of erosion substance. With limited time, I dumped these substitutes and left some real parts behind. I hope they don’t find out too quickly.”

“No—” Monday’s hoarse shout came from far below.

Zhu Yanchen: “…”

“I can follow them first and retrieve it if necessary. How about you? Are you feeling better?”

“Let’s observe for a few minutes first, and then go back to the sled later.” Zhu Yanchen didn’t immediately answer his question.

“What?!”

“The erosion concentration near X City has always been high. I just wasn’t prepared earlier—there’s medicine in the briefcase. I’ll be fine if I take it in time.” Zhu Yanchen carefully studied the monsters’ route. “They’re taking us in the direction of X City. The speed is good.”

…Don’t make this scary situation sound like taking a taxi. Shu Jun was a little dazed.

“They mistook you for their leader, which means they do have a leader. Based on the current situation, they won’t dispose of us without their leader’s decision… I suspect the illusion started a long time ago. As for the Corpse Parasite and that individual monster, they are just used to test you.”

Zhu Yanchen paused. “The other party has laid such a long line, so they won’t act carelessly. The mud men will be exposed sooner or later. We might as well pretend not to know and take this free ride. You can also take the opportunity to rest and recharge your energy.”

“A’Yan.”

“Hmm?”

“If it weren’t for me, would your original plan have been so thrilling?” As Shu Jun carefully descended, he grumbled. “How about I lead them away first and you follow your original plan…”

“No need.” Zhu Yanchen’s voice sounded amused. “I came for them in the first place. It’s perfect, I don’t have to go looking.”

As soon as they got back on the sled, the crowded group of monsters disappeared instantly. If he hadn’t just looked down from above, Shu Jun would almost believe that they had already escaped. He simply drummed up some wind and let the invisible monsters pull the sled in front, conscientiously disguising the surrounding environment. The sled quickly glided across the “uninhabited” land that looked seemingly peaceful.

Out of sight, out of mind. Shu Jun silently recited, throwing a piece of meat to Monday to shut up its grumbling mouth.

Zhu Yanchen took his medicine and sat up straight, calmly staring in the direction of X City.

Shu Jun always had the feeling that this person’s temperament had changed. Surrounded by invisible monsters, Zhu Yanchen’s satisfaction seemed greater than his fear. He exuded an inexplicable radiance, which didn’t make Shu Jun feel at ease.

It was like fireworks at their most brilliant moment, and then there was only one ending—extinguishment.

‘Hopefully, my intuition won’t come into play this time,’ Shu Jun thought to himself. There was still another month that this person could live.

The four-legged monsters were quite capable. They managed to pull the sled to their destination in less than three days, which should have taken five days. Shu Jun and Zhu Yanchen pretended to be ignorant the whole time, and eventually became numb to their surroundings—they couldn’t see the monsters around them, and occasionally forgetting wasn’t a big deal. Shu Jun occasionally flew high in secret to confirm their location. Other than that, their journey was relatively peaceful.

However, the concentration of the erosion substance around them was too high. Zhu Yanchen took medicine constantly, which made Shu Jun’s stomach hurt.

It had been three days since the four-legged monsters took over the sled before they reached their destination. The illusion melted away like snow and they could fully see the exposed ruins of X City.

‘No matter what Zhu Yanchen’s previous guesses were, he was right,’ Shu Jun thought. There was more than just “something” in X City—the scene in front of him almost made his heart stop.

“A’Yan, quickly take a sample and record it.” Shu Jun took a deep breath. “Then I’ll take you away.”

Chapter 21: Another Alpha

This was the second time Luo Duan entered Y City. Just like the first time, Yi Ning’s assistant personally drove to pick him up and sent him all the way to Y City’s downtown headquarters. Through the car window, he could see silhouettes of people in the city, but that was all.

As the capital of this land, Y City was many times more prosperous than the stronghold. But compared with the “world” he lived in, it still looked a bit backward and poor. People would use sophisticated electrical appliances scavenged from erosion areas, as well as rough homemade crafts. There may be an oil lamp next to the ultra-thin computer that the boundaries of the times became blurred here.

Seeing the government’s car coming, the people would spontaneously give way and make room. Luo Duan originally thought it was preferential treatment for “players”, but now that he thought about it, the car passed by without stopping halfway meant there may be some deeper meaning in it.

The only place he could really set foot in was the courtyard of the Central Headquarters.

Luo Duan chuckled a few times, watched the assistant leave in a hurry, and waited in Yi Ning’s reception room.

Just like Zhu Yanchen was to Shu Jun, in terms of setting, Yi Ning was also regarded as his immediate superior. That was all for ordinary players. As the captain of the second-ranked team in the world , “Groundwater”, Luo Duan had the right to apply for a meeting with Yi Ning. Compared with Shu Jun, who treated his immediate boss like air, Luo Duan was softer and got along with Yi Ning quite amicably.

What used to be his usual behavior had now become an excellent cover.

The door of the reception room opened.

“Bitter Rain.” Yi Ning, with a perfect NPC image, called his game ID as usual. “There’s no task right now, but you came to see me especially. Do you have any other needs?”

“I want to apply for indoor practice.” Luo Duan smiled slightly.

Yi Ning frowned. “Indoor practice” was the nominal resident mission of <Erosion>. As the name suggested, the location was indoors, and the content was quite simple—players needed to fight mutant beasts of all levels and couldn’t bring backup. During the practice process, players still had the possibility of death and exit.

For the United Government, the “indoor practice” was a controlled, simulated battlefield, and researchers used it to collect combat data of synths. Ordinary indoor practice could be done at the border stronghold, but since Luo Duan specifically proposed…

“I’ve already played through the border strongholds.” Luo Duan continued, “I’ve read the information, and the high-level training ground is underground at headquarters. I want to apply for it.”

Yi Ning didn’t agree right away. “I hope you can think about it again. Your ability is partial to group support, not suitable for individual training. It’s really not worthwhile to hurt your body on impulse.”

To put it bluntly, Luo Duan was strong, but his physical condition was questionable—he was almost at the end of his synthetic lifespan, and it was difficult to say if he could still use his full abilities. Moreover, even if Luo Duan was already on the verge of being scrapped, it seemed like a waste to use such an important resource as cannon fodder in battles.

Luo Duan seemed to have anticipated his response and refused to budge. “My team is on vacation now, and I happen to have some free time. Sir, I am about to retire soon, and this may be my last visit here. I just want to… experience a little more.”

After he finished speaking, Luo Duan’s smile grew wider. His appearance matched well with his water-based ability—his facial features were soft, and he had a gentle and elegant temperament that made it hard for people to feel disgusted with him.

Luo Duan’s response was reasonable, and it would seem unnatural to push him away any further. Yi Ning had to follow the regulations. “Alright, I will arrange a room for you here. There will be someone to accompany you during your stay, and the mission can be interrupted at any time. If you are seriously injured, we will also forcefully interrupt the mission. Do you have any other questions?”

“What about normal injuries?”

“Treat them until you can fight again.”

“I understand, thank you.” Luo Duan politely extended his hand, which was covered with black gloves. “The application form has already been filled out. I appreciate your approval.”

Yi Ning reached out his hand and shook hands with him—Strange, did Luo Duan wear gloves before?

“See you tomorrow.” Luo Duan quickly withdrew his hand with a pure smile. “…I’m really looking forward to it.”

“If you are concerned about losing to the Blackbirds, I have to say that their captain hasn’t ever applied for this.” Before Luo Duan left, Yi Ning couldn’t help but add.

Luo Duan paused at the door for a few seconds but didn’t turn back.

“…That’s because he doesn’t like being indoors and prefers to charge in the wilderness. I don’t have such strong attacking power, so this training is just right for me.”

Meanwhile, Shu Jun was charging in the wilderness, but his mood wasn’t so good.

An hour ago, Uncle Pan had once again demonstrated his business acumen—when inquiring for information, Zhu Yanchen accidentally revealed their plan to buy a sled. As a result, just as they had packed their bags and were about to leave the inn, Uncle Pan had already found the sled merchant and guide for them.

“Here is their contact information. If you’re not satisfied, there are others. I only need a 10% fee for his introduction. He sells quality goods at reasonable prices and never cheats people. I can just add the total cost to your lodging, food, and sauce expenses, so you don’t have to worry.”

Zhu Yanchen was about to take out his wallet, and Shu Jun suspected that the Grand Marshal had never heard the phrase “shop around”.

He laughed it off, put down his luggage, and dragged Zhu Yanchen to the market for a round. As it turned out, Uncle Pan hadn’t lied—even including the introduction fee, the price he offered was still lower than the market rate.

In the end, they came back to the inn with two full bags of newly purchased supplies.

“Back already?” Uncle Pan greeted with a smile. “You two are new faces, so they won’t be polite to outsiders.”

Shu Jun: “…” They were wearing masks. How could they tell?

“Those who often go to the erosion zone outside have deformed bones. You two have straight spines, and you’re buying mud sleds and looking for a guide. It’s obvious you’re newcomers.” Uncle Pan seemed to have read his mind. “I’ll contact someone for you… Oh, it’s still the same guy. Come back next time, both of you!”

Zhu Yanchen paid quickly and then glanced at Shu Jun.

“What are you looking at?” Shu Jun raised his face. “Uncle Pan is an honest man. I have nothing to say… but I was just afraid you’ll be ripped off. Saving money isn’t wrong.”

He thought of the money he had saved for half his life in the so-called “real world”, now all worthless, and his heart felt tight.

Zhu Yanchen continued to stare.

“Save some money, so when we come back here, we can splurge and celebrate.” Shu Jun’s confidence wasn’t diminished.

Zhu Yanchen was stunned and his gaze softened—Shu Jun’s tone was quite certain, infectious as always. For a moment, he even had the illusion that he could survive.

But they didn’t need to waste energy on this. Marshal Zhu thought for a moment, canceled hiding the amount in his electronic wallet, and showed Shu Jun the string of numbers.

…Shu Jun’s eyes glossed over, and he didn’t speak to him for half an hour. When they had packed up their belongings again, Shu Jun muttered sadly, “If so much money is transferred out, won’t people think you were ‘kidnapped’?”

Zhu Yanchen’s tone was serious. “It will be fine. I usually carry this much.”

Shu Jun: “…”

An hour later, the two of them were racing through the mud in the erosion zone. The sky was a familiar leaden gray, with only a few scattered stones and dead trees on the gray-black ground mixed with mutated beast paw prints and sled tracks. It was unknown whether the recent events had affected them, but there were only them in sight, and the air had a touch of desolation.

The heavily eroded land was somewhat swampy and soft underfoot, with mud puddles everywhere, making it difficult for both walking and vehicles. Faced with this kind of road condition, the rich would take mud boats, and the poor would use mutant beasts to pull mud sleds. Over time, many people dedicated themselves to paddling mud boats and driving mud sleds and charged high prices as “erosion zone guides”.

The guide was also a bald, muscular man, similar in size to Uncle Pan. He had two lumps on his head, but they were brown. Shu Jun glanced at his appearance and wondered if Uncle Pan was really that honest—Did they really not get cheated?

“I heard from my brother that you two want to go east?” The guide had a gas mask on his face, but the laughter inside could be heard. “I can only send you two for two days but I won’t go any deeper.”

“Two days is enough,” said Zhu Yanchen.

“The south is also good. Someone dug up a jewelry store there not long ago. Why bother with the east? Actually, with the amount of luggage you have, you can take a small boat to the south. If you take the mud sled, you’ll have to add a cargo compartment, which would tire my dogs out, haa.” The guide obviously wanted to continue chatting.

The “dogs” he mentioned were pulling the mud sled. The pack of dogs was all black, with drool dripping from their split heads. They had six legs and were running on the mud like they were walking on flat ground. In front of their heads hung black and red meat, like a donkey being led by a carrot.

“Speaking of the road to the east, it’s not that I’m scared. I used to be able to send people on a three-day journey, but now it’s only two days at most. I don’t know if my brother told you. There has been trouble over there recently—it’s really evil. A group of people found a strange monster’s corpse…”

Now they knew where Uncle Pan’s endless information came from. Marshal Zhu slowly lay down and gave a look to Shu Jun, saying, “It’s up to you now”.

“What’s your name?” Shu Jun took over the burden and interrupted the chatter of the guide. “Mr. Pan…?”

“In fact, my brother and I are from the old Chen family. Our surname isn’t Pan. It’s just because of these two lumps on our heads.” The guide chuckled, “But in business, it’s best to have a name that’s easy to remember. You can just call me Uncle Xiong.”

Shu Jun: “…Uncle Xiong.”

The next two days were uneventful. Except for the unchanging physical examination given to Shu Jun by Zhu Yanchen, Zhu Yanchen seemed to have fallen in love with sleeping. Whenever he had time, he would take a nap. Shu Jun could understand his feelings—there was nothing to see in the heavily eroded area. Let alone the Erosion Swamp, the mutant beasts they encountered were only small cats and dogs. With an outsider by their side, they couldn’t speak freely.

Zhu Yanchen slept after work and worked after sleeping while Shu Jun could only go out to hunt a few mutant beasts to eat while Uncle Xiong was sleeping. After eating, he had to bring back some meat to feed Monday, so it wouldn’t be hungry and bark while Uncle Xiong was awake.

They thought they could endure for two days, but the problem arose on the second night.

On the second night, they encountered a river.

The water in the river was naturally not clear, but it was particularly conspicuous in the barrenness. When Uncle Xiong saw the river, he said, “This is the place. You have to sled by yourselves from here on.”

As he spoke, he took off the cargo compartment hanging behind the sled and helped them install it to the sled’s head. “Do you want to buy a few dogs? You’ll tire yourself out paddling. I can sell you a few dogs since I’m going back alone anyway.”

Before he finished speaking, Zhu Yanchen decisively pulled out his gun and shot the first mutant beast in front of him into two pieces.

“Hey, if you don’t want to buy, just say so. What are you doing—fuck me!!!” Uncle Xiong cursed halfway, and his voice changed tone—countless gray-black “straws” drilled out of the body and crawled towards the three of them.

A Corpse Parasite.

Shu Jun clicked his tongue, tore off the cloth that covered his greatsword, and drew it out. The sword was much more convenient than his claws—unlike Zhu Yanchen’s purification gun, its blade could cut through the fine limbs of the Corpse Parasite, which turned to powder and disappeared. With a few elegant slashes, Shu Jun severed a third of the Corpse Parasite’s limbs.

Monday: “Burp.”

Uncle Xiong’s expression changed when he saw the weapon.

“It’s high-tech, high-tech,” Shu Jun quickly explained. “My boss is rich, and we came out to do weapons testing. Right, boss?”

Zhu Yanchen, who was shooting at the Corpse Parasite, almost missed his target. Fortunately, Uncle Xiong was too flustered to inquire further. “Why don’t I take you back? There are Corpse Parasites here, which means there must be an Erosion Swamp nearby. No matter what you two are up to, your lives are more important.”

“It’s fine,” Shu Jun said, letting Monday happily turn the Corpse Parasite into powder. “You go ahead, we can handle it.”

Uncle Xiong didn’t hesitate and quickly pulled the reins, fleeing the scene.

Shu Jun wasn’t too nervous. This wasn’t their first encounter with a Corpse Parasite. It could only attack Zhu Yanchen, who wasn’t an easy target. As long as he kept guarding him, even if an Erosion Swamp came looking for them, Zhu Yanchen would be fine.

“A’Yan, follow me closely.” Shu Jun was much more relaxed without Uncle Xiong watching. This was just a routine battle, or so he thought.

However, at the moment the Corpse Parasite was completely disintegrated by the great sword, Shu Jun heard muffled laughter.

To be precise, it wasn’t a physical sound, but more like an emotion he sensed from the Erosion Swamp. Shu Jun shuddered and broke out in cold sweat.

The Erosion Swamps were like a swarm of bees or ants—a biological aggregate that followed instinct, with some simple emotions and thoughts at most.

Even if it was like Monday had stumbled upon valuable information by sheer luck and gained a brain, their emotions would still be relatively simple. But this laughter was different—it wasn’t the pure laughter of a child, but rather the light laughter of an adult who had been amused.

Suddenly, every nerve in Shu Jun’s body tensed up. He positioned himself in front of Zhu Yanchen, facing the direction where the laughter was coming from, and said, “We have to go.”

Unfortunately, it was too late for that.

A blurry figure appeared in the haze. It was about two meters tall and had the outline of some kind of insect. It had four limbs that were thin and long, with jointed structures that bent several times that lightly supported it on the muddy ground.

At the junction of its four limbs hung a droplet-shaped body. It stood less than a hundred meters away from them, moving slowly and resembled a dancing ghost spider.

Shu Jun was very sure that the laughter was coming from it.

[So it’s not the leader.] Its thoughts came through, without any exact language but with a clear meaning. [Well, of course the leader wouldn’t come to a place like this.]

[Where are your swamps?] It laughed again, throwing out one question after another. [Why do you look so strange?]

[Why aren’t you answering?]

It moved closer again. Cold sweat broke out on Shu Jun’s forehead. The thing’s thought process was too fast, and he had no idea how to respond—he had only had one successful exchange with an Erosion Swamp before, and it was a mindless expletive.

[We already have an alpha, and we only need one.] It said, [Since you’re not answering, you’re an invader.]

The author has something to say:

Chapter 20: Yi Ning

At eight in the morning, Zhu Yanchen woke up groggily.

He hadn’t slept so well in a long time. It wasn’t due to mental tranquility but rather a real physical change—in order to hide the lesions that had accumulated over the past decade, Ai Xiaoxiao had removed countless tumors and growths from Zhu Yanchen’s body.

She had kept them as research material, and according to Dr. Ai, there were enough of those things to make another adult.

Zhu Yanchen was well aware that, after countless surgeries, his body was like a patched-up puppet. It looked shiny and polished on the outside, but inside it was already in a state of disrepair.

Therefore, the pain had always been constant—not unbearable but endless, slowly crawling in every corner of his body. Because of this, Zhu Yanchen’s sleep quality had always been poor. He was more accustomed to fragmented sleep than to sleeping soundly. If he could sleep, he would continue sleeping, but if the pain woke him up, he would simply get up and work.

Zhu Yanchen had almost forgotten when he had last slept so long.

His diet hadn’t changed, and neither did the environment by much. It was possible that Shu Jun had done something, but if the other party had made any major moves, he wouldn’t have been completely unaware of it.

This was information worth recording.

Zhu Yanchen looked up at Shu Jun—Shu Jun hadn’t squeezed into his bed but was lying on the sofa next to the purifier. The sofa was a bit narrow, forcing Shu Jun to curl his body awkwardly, barely managing to lie himself down. He held the greatsword in his arms, his mouth half open, and his sharp canine teeth were visible from between his lips as he slept soundly.

The purifier was still running, making a buzzing noise, and there was a scent of pancakes in the air. Zhu Yanchen sat quietly for a while, then put on his coat and got off the bed.

The greatsword was fixed to the purifier by Shu Jun’s body, and it was extremely miserable. At this moment, it didn’t care whether Zhu Yanchen was a friend or foe, and it opened its mouth pitifully. “Help… Help…”

Zhu Yanchen: “……”

Zhu Yanchen ignored the sword’s plea and went to the briefcase on the table. With a light click, the metal buckle made a sound, and the next second, a cold wind blew over his skin, and the blade stopped close to Zhu Yanchen’s two fingers.

Zhu Yanchen didn’t move.

“It’s you.” Shu Jun yawned and put away the sword. “Sorry, I was half asleep. Are you feeling better?”

“Much better.” Zhu Yanchen took out a needle for collecting blood from the box. “Give me your arm. I need to take a blood sample.”

“Let’s have breakfast first. I bought pancakes and baked them on the purifier all night. They are still hot. The boss also gave me a bag of rock sugar, which I baked with them. I’ll mix it to make some sugar water later.” Shu Jun yawned again and released Monday, who was still shouting “Help!” in a rough voice.

Zhu Yanchen nodded politely while holding the blood-drawing needle still.

Shu Jun scratched his messy hair and sighed, extending his arm. After a few days, there was no sign of his physical mutation disappearing.

“Open your mouth,” Zhu Yanchen requested as he placed the blood sample into the testing machine.

But this time, he hesitated for a few seconds. “If you don’t like me wearing gloves, I can take them off.”

Having fabric put in his mouth wasn’t very comfortable, but Shu Jun firmly declined. “Wear them. I’m afraid that if I get hungry, I might bite your finger.”

Zhu Yanchen pulled off his gloves expressionlessly.

Five minutes later.

“…Everything is normal.” Zhu Yanchen looked into Shu Jun’s mouth and touched his mutated teeth for a while. The examination took much longer than last time, and Shu Jun’s jaw was a bit sore, but he could only endure it while looking at Zhu Yanchen’s focused examination.

“Your body has initially stabilized.” Zhu Yanchen took out his wet fingers. “If you feel uncomfortable, remember to tell me at any time.”

Shu Jun rubbed his chin and said sincerely, “The pancake is getting drier, and I’m feeling hungry. I had one last night, and it was really delicious. It also has sauce.”

He didn’t know if he was seeing things, but Zhu Yanchen’s gaze softened a bit. He packed up the briefcase and sat down obediently to eat breakfast. Ignoring the erosion marks, the room was still pretty well decorated. The two sat across from each other and ate breakfast, with a little bit of warmth.

There was a vague sense of déjà vu, and Shu Jun shook his head.

Zhu Yanchen knew nothing of Shu Jun’s psychological activities. “We’ll buy a large sled and go to X City in about ten days. With your physical condition, you don’t need protection to go to X City.”

Shu Jun stared at Zhu Yanchen’s eyes—his brow furrowed as he absentmindedly replied, “Mm.”

“I plan to survey X City for three weeks,” Zhu Yanchen continued. “Then we’ll continue east and walk all the way to the seaside. Finally, we’ll come back… as far as we can go.”

Shu Jun stirred his sugar water with a spoon. “Mm.”

“When I die, you don’t have to worry about the body. Just go back to Y City and find a female doctor named Ai Xiaoxiao. She’s my subordinate, and her research level is top-notch. Although she can’t treat you like me, she can still do a good job of wrapping up loose ends.” Zhu Yanchen spoke calmly, as if he weren’t talking about his own death.

Shu Jun stopped stirring his spoon.

Zhu Yanchen didn’t wait for that “Mm” and looked up. Shu Jun smiled at him and brought up a different topic. “The boss here just said yesterday that there were strange things happening near X City, telling us to stay away. You specifically want to go there, so what’s your goal?”

“I don’t know.”

“What?”

“It’s because I don’t know what’s there that I want to confirm it in person. Anything could appear in the city ruins that humans haven’t set foot in for two hundred years.” Zhu Yanchen picked up his handkerchief and wiped his mouth elegantly. “What did the boss say to you? Please tell me.”

“He said my nails were too long and that young people shouldn’t follow this type of fashion.”

“……”

Shu Jun pushed the sugar water in front of Zhu Yanchen and said, “Just kidding. You can ask him yourself later. That uncle is quite talkative, but I can’t catch the main points. After all, I haven’t seen him for more than 200 minutes, so there could be new information that may appear.”

Zhu Yanchen nodded and hurriedly drank all the sugar water, planning to tidy up the cups and plates on the table. Shu Jun reached out his arm and directly grabbed his wrist.

“A’Yan.” Shu Jun’s tone was a bit unquestionable. “I would prefer it if you introduced Ai Xiaoxiao to me in person. To be honest, for the sake of your people, you’d better live longer.”

As he spoke, the smile on Shu Jun’s face disappeared. His vertical pupils shrank a bit, staring at Zhu Yanchen’s reaction.

“If my partner leaves too soon and there’s no more interest involved, I’m not sure what I will do.”

Zhu Yanchen stretched out his other hand and gently opened Shu Jun’s hand.

“I understand,” he said.

Only then did Shu Jun continue to nibble on his pancake, missing Zhu Yanchen’s silent whisper.

“…And I know what you will do,” Zhu Yanchen silently moved his lips.

In Y city.

Marshal Yi Ning’s mood wasn’t very good.

He just wanted to create a stumbling block for Zhu Yanchen at the stronghold, letting the mutant beasts invade from the outside to indirectly prove the necessity of “players” production—even the powerful Zhu Yanchen from a prominent family couldn’t protect himself, which demonstrated the shortage of troops.

If the plan went well, Zhu Yanchen wouldn’t have had any problems. At most, he would suffer some minor injuries and stay in the hospital for one or two months. Yi Ning had made adequate preparations and even reduced the defense of the stronghold, but something went wrong in the process.

They hadn’t released the mutant beasts from the outer circle yet, but one of them escaped from the inside and took Zhu Yanchen himself as hostage. It was like someone knew what they were planning and took the opportunity to act ahead of time.

After the incident, Yi Ning contacted the Tang family, who provided him with financial support. He only wanted ordinary the benefits of public opinion, not assassination.

However, the Tang family claimed they knew nothing about it.

Yi Ning sat back in his chair in annoyance and began to flip through the prepared speech. The rhetoric on it was impassioned, but it wouldn’t be used in the short term.

What is going on?

He came from a commoner background and his parents made a living by living on the edge of the erosion zone, where they licked blood from a knife’s edge every day. They died of chronic diseases caused by erosion when Yi Ning was only four years old. He survived alone, stumbling and suffering through countless difficulties, to climb to his current position. No one knew better than him what benefits the “players” production would bring to the people.

At present, “players”—synthetic humans—were only stationed at the strongholds and were under the jurisdiction of the United Government for purification and exploration outside. If his vision was realized, lower-performing synthetic humans could be stationed in the city as “life players”, contributing to labor. The less efficient ones could be sold in batches to wealthy people, and people wouldn’t need to venture into the erosion zone to mine for resources.

This way, people could completely get rid of jobs that have erosion risk, and the workload would be greatly reduced.

Truth management could be a hassle, but as long as the goals were established, the rest could be gradually resolved. Even if the synthetic people inside the city caused trouble, they could still be suppressed by the regular army.

The ordinary people quite liked this proposal. Not only did it reduce their workload, but no one wanted their loved ones to do risky work. On the other hand, Yi Ning, who came from a civilian background, was more likable than the young master of the Zhu family, thus his popularity among the people continued to rise.

However, Yi Ning didn’t relax his vigilance because of this.

Zhu Yanchen was able to hold on until now because of his deep and broad family connections, as well as his truly excellent tactical skills. Compared to those from big families who were all smooth talkers and focused on saving face, Yi Ning admired Zhu Yanchen as an opponent. In terms of ability, except for being too low-key, Zhu Yanchen had no other weaknesses to exploit.

Now that his opponent was gone, Yi Ning wasn’t happy.

On the one hand, he couldn’t understand—his plan was undoubtedly beneficial to the people’s livelihood. If Zhu Yanchen had a similar idea to him, he would even be willing to withdraw from the competition. Old Marshal Zhu had also expressed his appreciation for him in public, but Zhu Yanchen was like a stone that couldn’t be moved.

On the other hand, the loss of Zhu Yanchen was objectively a huge setback. Leaving aside the fact that they couldn’t find a replacement for him in terms of tactical planning, Yi Ning couldn’t find a suitable person to take over the management of the synthetic humans that Zhu Yanchen was responsible for.

Originally, he had planned to promote the production of synthetic humans as soon as possible, but now even cleaning up the mess had become a big problem.

Yi Ning pushed his speech aside and rubbed his forehead. As if things weren’t chaotic enough, the communicator began to beep and squeal.

“What is it?”

“Sir, it’s the synthesized human you’re directly in charge of, Captain Luo Duan of ‘Groundwater’… He wants to see you.”

Kinky Thoughts:

LMAO. So both marshals had similar plans?

Evil As Humans Ch115

Chapter 115: Entry Notice

It was night.

Yin Ren turned his face sideways, half burying it in the soft pillow. The words that Dog Thing spewed out a few hours ago were still dangling in his mind.

……

[Siren: In terms of the strength gap, I am a mouse, the sniper is a wolf, and Qi Xin is a tiger.]

In the dim basement, Dog Thing made an aggrieved barking sound.

[Siren: She can eat me as easily as eating a melon seed!]

It even cranked up its vibrate mode and buzzed and bounced on the table, trying desperately to express its fear.

“That sniper may be ‘Mr. Qiu’,” Zhong Chengshuo interrupted. “She specifically asked us to be careful of this ‘Mr. Qiu’, which means we should have been in contact with him before.”

“Being sniped” was also considered a kind of contact.

Yin Ren said softly, as he tapped on the table with his phone, “Is that it? Nothing more? She ate the old mayor and called me a cub. How much do you know about this?”

[Siren: Let me think about it.]

A few seconds later, a “beep” sound was heard, indicating a message delivery.

[Siren: For her, “imitations” are dying meat, which won’t be fresh after death. She wants to eat it while it’s fresh.]

This time it learned how to behave and didn’t dare be vague, but tried to use its limited IQ to come up with a metaphor.

Yin Ren stopped tapping the phone.

He suddenly remembered that not long ago, in the file room, there was a clamor from Dog Thing to eat those “meaty xanthium” monsters.

It labeled them as “weak things that could be eaten”.

If Dog Thing could eat xanthiums and Qi Xin could eat Dog Thing and imitations, it sounded like…

Yin Ren subconsciously looked in the direction of Zhong Chengshuo.

After deciding to give Dog Thing to Zhong Chengshuo for research, he told Zhong Chengshuo about it. Sure enough, Zhong Chengshuo raised his eyes, and his pitch-black pupils looked directly at the phone on the table.

“Do the ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ you describe us refer to the position in the food chain?” Zhong Chengshuo took two steps forward and stopped beside Yin Ren.

Dog Thing slowly brought up a browser and searched for the definition of “food chain”. The two silently watched the phone switch pages for a long time, before waiting for the next text bubble to appear.

[Siren: It’s a bit close.]

[Siren: But it also depends on the individual.]

“Well, if the ‘predator’ at the top of the food chain is aging, sick, disabled, or just a cub, there’s a possibility of being reversely preyed upon by the ‘prey’… In this case, the definitions of strong and weak aren’t absolute. Is this what you mean?”

[Siren: Yes, I want such a brain.]

Zhong Chengshuo said cautiously, “Not giving.”

Yin Ren didn’t know whether to be serious or laugh. He twisted his face and brought Dog Thing closer.

They still didn’t know what Qi Xin and the sniper were, but Yin Ren had a vague idea in his heart.

Whether it was the meaty xanthium or Dog Thing, it obviously didn’t belong to “this world”. Whether based on Yin Ren’s experience or looking at Shian’s records, these kinds of things weren’t “evil spirits” in the conventional sense, let alone the sniper and Qi Xin, whose intensity was obviously beyond the standard.

They would exist in the “Archive” and would be attracted by Guo Wei, who was about to become a fierce ghost. The sniper’s bullet could restrain the power of a fierce ghost, while Qi Xin could directly swallow evil things containing tremendous evil qi, such as the mayor… These existences had countless connections with evil things.

But the relationship wasn’t clear enough.

Yin Ren looked at Zhong Chengshuo, who had also fallen into contemplation. His lover always reacted quickly, and he should have arrived at a similar conclusion.

He couldn’t help sighing and threw Dog Thing, who had stopped spewing words, back on the table.

Perhaps Zhong Chengshuo didn’t feel deeply about it, but as a person who had passed through thousands of years, Yin Ren could inexplicably understand Dog Thing that was clumsily expressing itself.

If he were sent back to the past and asked to describe principles like “chips”, “electricity”, and “the internet” to Huajisi in classical Chinese that he wasn’t familiar with, he might not even be as good as Dog Thing…

Even though he loved using the tablet while eating chips and surfing the web.

“Okay, tell me more about me.”

Yin Ren’s tone became softer, and the 1% battery on Dog Thing trembled and rose to 2%.

[Siren: I thought you were “weak” before. Now I’m not sure about your situation. You’re stronger than I thought, and it’s always changing.]

“I understand. You can’t determine Yin Ren’s position in your ‘food chain’.” Zhong Chengshuo fluently translated Dog Thing’s words.

He took out a piece of paper, grabbed a pencil from the toolbox, and drew quickly.

“This is what we know now.”

The gray-black nib rustled on the paper.

“The ‘special creatures’ like Qi Xin and Dog Thing have their own food chain… There’s too little information about this at the moment, so we have to study it later. Uh, we…”

He chewed on the word “we” slowly, as if it were some kind of delicious food.

“According to Qi Xin, the ‘death’ of the larval stage of these creatures becomes what humans call ‘Evil Spirits’… The power of the Evil Spirit can transform into evil qi. Whether it’s evil qi or Evil Force, it can give birth to or strengthen evil things.”

Zhong Chengshuo’s pencil stopped suddenly.

“What?” Yin Ren listened carefully.

Zhong Chengshuo turned his gaze. In the dim light, his eyes looked like black holes after poking through a paper.

“Irreversible deterioration and transformation. The distribution of food for the weak at the bottom, the use of different types of ‘nutrients’…”

Zhong Chengshuo was murmuring softly. The tip of his pencil was gently poking the paper, and the corner of his mouth showed an almost smiling expression.

“Yin Ren.”

He called to his lover in a low voice.

“Following that ‘meat’ analogy of Siren’s, assuming that the Evil Force of the Evil Spirits is the nutrient-rich ‘fresh meat’ and the Evil Spirits are the spoiled and deteriorated ‘rotten meat’… Adding the evil things that derive and grow from it. Doesn’t this process resemble the cycle of ‘corpse decay’?”

Yin Ren’s soft expression disappeared from his face.

He glanced at the white paper with a half-circular picture. The aura of the Ghost King from thousands of years ago was revealed, like the tip of an iceberg.

“It’s possible that the Evil Spirits appeared concentratedly during the hundreds of years of the Gong Dynasty. Before that, there weren’t many evil things. After the Evil Spirits came to the world, all kinds of strange evil things flooded it… Well, I may be regarded as one of them.”

“Evil Spirit” or “Divine Descent” were all names that humans came up with through observation.

Thinking about this, Yin Ren’s expression became a bit complicated.

“According to this theory, if ‘fresh meat’ was scattered all over the place by ‘Divine Descent’, what exactly is it then?”

Zhong Chengshuo stuck the paper with his thoughts to the wall next to Yin Ren’s information. “This is the most interesting place.”

Unfortunately, they didn’t have a seminar on the spot afterwards.

The two powerhouses looked at each other with affection and decided to continue to explore the mysteries of the world when Zhong Chengshuo received a call from Zhong Youde.

The old man’s voice was so loud that Yin Ren could hear it clearly without using his special abilities.

“You just returned from a business trip, but don’t know how to come home to visit, ah? How are you and Xiao Yin? Your mother and I have bought too many dishes, so why don’t we have dinner together today?”

In this way, King Yama received his first task after returning—his father ordered him to buy fresh beef from the nearby supermarket. Comrade Xiao Zhong looked shocked and stood at attention on the spot.

“You heard it. My parents called us to have a meal together,” he said. “They are probably trying to see if you have broken up with me.”

Yin Ren: “……”

He didn’t know whether the Zhong couple had too much or too little confidence in their son.

“They have cooked your favorite honey pork ribs and want to make beef stew,” Zhong Chengshuo said slowly. “You can go back first and eat while it’s still hot. I’ll clean up here and go buy the meat… Do you remember the way?”

“I do.”

……

As Zhong Chengshuo expected, the Zhong couple didn’t explicitly say anything, but seeing the tacit communication between the two “youngsters”, they both showed some relaxation. The honey pork ribs for dinner were glazed in an orange-red, looking quite attractive, and its sweet aroma gave off a warm taste of the world.

After a long day, they returned to the warmth of home again. Everything in the secret basement seemed like another world.

Yin Ren pulled himself out of his memories.

At this moment, Dog Thing was soaked in 75% alcohol and accepted its punishment. Yellow Millet didn’t have the phone to restrain it, so it was rolling around the living room, familiarizing itself with the environment.

The stewed “Zhong Family beef stew” was placed in the refrigerator. Zhong Chengshuo said he planned to use it to cook beef noodle soup tomorrow morning.

The curtains were still tightly drawn. Yin Ren had to admit that Zhong Chengshuo’s curtains were well picked, as they were excellent at blocking the light. With the moonlight blocked, inside was so dark that he couldn’t even see his fingers. On a dark and windy night like this, if it were a normal night, Yin Ren would probably have pulled out a strand of hair and rummaged through the fridge for a few pieces of beef.

Whether it was a kiss on the cheek or a new discovery, it was worth celebrating with two slabs of beef.

But Yin Ren couldn’t do it now.

The long memories were over, and Lord Ghost King had to face reality—

He was lying sideways on Zhong Chengshuo’s bed.

Zhong Chengshuo, who was wearing pajamas and his nightcap, was lying behind him, and his whole body exuded the unique water vapor and refreshing smell after taking a shower.

…And listening to Zhong Chengshuo’s breathing, it was obvious that he was awake.

He knew it was a bad idea! He knew they wouldn’t be able to sleep!

When he got home, Yin Ren took his pillow back to the sofa. After he finished eating an apple, it mysteriously flew back to Zhong Chengshuo’s bed again, and there was even an extra pillow next to it.

“I’m used to your breath, and I want to stay with you longer.”

Zhong Chengshuo was sitting on the side of the bed with an expression like he was holding a press conference.

“If you don’t want to, I’ll put it back…”

“Of course, I do, but we won’t be able to sleep.”

“Won’t.”

“Will.” Grand Master Zhong asserted in a divine voice.

“Verification is required,” Zhong Chengshuo pivoted and proposed a different excuse.

The verification results were freshly released, and at 3:30 in the morning, they were both wide awake.

Hehe, what did I tell you? Truly, old ginger was spicier. Yin Ren felt the depression around him. It seemed as if Zhong Chengshuo had transformed into a wooden stake, and except for breathing, he didn’t move at all.

Yin Ren began to count in his heart. When he counted to ten, Zhong Chengshuo was still imitating a stake. He didn’t mind breaking the silence and starting a conversation to make his bedmate feel awkward.

Ten, nine, eight…

The blanket rustled as Zhong Chengshuo moved. His movements were light, like a sparrow perched on a branch.

Seven, six, five…

The other’s body temperature got closer, and his heartbeat was a little faster than usual.

Four…

Yin Ren thought he would be hugged.

Zhong Chengshuo’s actions were even more… special. He leaned vaguely behind Yin Ren, and his forehead gently rested against his back. One of Zhong Chengshuo’s hands was attached to Yin Ren’s shoulder blade, with movement as light as a feather.

Yin Ren didn’t wear his pajamas properly, exposing a large area of his neck. Zhong Chengshuo’s forehead was pressed against Yin Ren’s spine, which wasn’t soft, but he still attached himself to it tightly.

Zhong Chengshuo once again froze and let out a small sigh.

“That’s great,” he said.

Yin Ren was silent for a few minutes.

He rolled over and confronted the man head-on. He shrank into the pillow and pressed his forehead against Zhong Chengshuo’s.

In the dark, Zhong Chengshuo was staring at him quietly. The two were extremely close, and those eyes didn’t blink. Without the protection of glasses, they looked a bit strange.

“Go to sleep,” Yin Ren said. “It will be better in the future.”

Zhong Chengshuo slowly closed his eyes.

At this distance, the two of their breaths entangled, and the atmosphere became a bit thicker than before. Even so, Zhong Chengshuo slowly fell asleep.

Yin Ren also closed his eyes.

In the living room, Dog Thing’s screen lit up.

A blood-red notification appeared on the internal app of Shian, and the screen switched to the notification content by itself.

The author has something to say:

Damn it, why are they so innocent? I need to speed things up and get things hotter…!

Kinky Thoughts:

To re-explain the theory they proposed in case you’re confused, based on what Dog Thing said, Zhong Chengshuo thinks this is some kind of food chain, and it’s all related to Divine Descent.

During Divine Descent, “fresh meat” is scattered across the world, giving rise and birth to many evil beings. You can think of this as the animal kingdom in a human sense. These evil beings then develop into their own species and kinds (such as mammals, birds, reptiles, ect.) and they have their own food chain.

Dog Thing’s measurement of “weak” isn’t necessarily about strength but where these evil beings lie on the food chain (similar to the animal world). Even the strong (if they become weak) could get eaten by those lower in the food chain.

Evil Spirits (the label that humans gave them) are considered decaying corpses. Just like in real life, a dying/dead animal slowly rots, but it gives back nutrients to the earth (whether it be through carrion or fertilization). They give off evil qi and Evil Force, which you can think of as nutrients, to the spirit world, nurturing and giving birth to new evil spirits.

So overall, it’s basically an ecosystem, but for evil beings.

Poor Dog Thing. It was just misunderstood!

Evil As Humans Ch114

Chapter 114: Four People

At dusk, Haigu Municipal Hospital.

A woman in her mid-forties left the gift store with a lifeless bouquet in her arms. The petals of the pink carnations were yellowing at the edges, and the surrounding baby’s-breath had fallen apart into pieces.

The woman hunched her back and had a lackluster expression. She was wearing a colorful t-shirt that didn’t match her age, and the bouquet of flowers in her arms couldn’t cover up the faint smell of sweat.

She lowered her head and walked towards the inpatient area, passing by pedestrians who would glance at her for no more than two seconds.

The unremarkable woman approached the ward of the inpatient area slowly in this way.

“……”

Not long after, the door of the ward closed behind her.

An old man in the ward turned his head, and after seeing the person who came, he slowly put away the smile on his face.

“It’s you.”

In the ward surveillance, the woman in her mid-forties who was holding flowers was still standing, but in the eyes of the old man, the “person” in front of him was completely different—

Simple black work uniform and cheap flats. The woman’s eyes were slender and red, as if she had cried, and the hair on the back of her head was tightly tied in a bun.

“You can continue to call me ‘Qi Xin’,” she said. “Qi Xin from Gengsheng Town is dead, and there are no other Qi Xin nearby. I quite like this name.”

The old man made no effort to hide the disgust on his face.

“What are you doing here?”

He sat up from the hospital bed.

“There’s no rally today—you messed up on the affairs in Gengsheng Town, and we haven’t settled that matter with you yet.”

“Um… Messed up?” Qi Xin opened the bouquet and replaced the half-dead flowers in a vase with them. “You asked me to go and you clearly promised that I could ‘eat as much as I want’.”

She bared her teeth at him.

“I went to see the situation with Fu Xingchuan and Li Nian and found food that could be eaten, so I ate.”

Her tone was calm, as if she were describing how she had eaten a few ingredients before the meal was served.

The old man gritted his teeth tightly, as if he wanted to scold her, but when he was looked at by those slender eyes, he couldn’t say a word.

Qi Xin fiddled with the bouquet of flowers, and the withered baby’s-breath fell down as she picked at it. The setting sun shone through the window, dyeing the white dried flowers a light shade of red, like fresh meat shavings. She didn’t stop her movements and played with them attentively.

The old man, Mr. Qiu, looked at the side of her face, and disgust seemed fixed on his expression.

Qi Xin rushed towards Mr. Qiu, and her cheek twitched. A crack opened on her profile, and the gap wriggled for a few seconds, transforming into a slender eye.

“If you think I disrupted your rhythm, you can delay the operations by ten, twenty, or even a hundred years. I have no objections.”

Qi Xin’s mouth was closed tightly, and her voice seemed to come from nowhere.

“Humans grow old fast and forget even faster. I thought you knew the truth.”

“We’re not here to play.” Mr. Qiu frowned as he hissed back.

“Well, you three aren’t here to play, but I am.”

Qi Xin swept away the baby’s-breath with the back of her hand, and the shriveled white flowers fell on the table, silent like snowflakes. The extra-grown eye looked at Mr. Qiu happily, without blinking.

“…Don’t think that ‘you’ can be so unscrupulous because you’re older. There were people older than you before, and you know their endings.” Mr. Qiu was silent for a while before he responded with a hiss.

“I don’t need you to survive. Although I’m a different breed than those two, I enjoy working with them more than you—”

Qi Xin’s movements of fiddling with the flowers stopped.

The thin woman turned her head, and all her facial features disappeared, leaving only a vague dark vortex. Qi Xin’s neck was folded ninety degrees, and her joints clicked as her deformed face rushed straight towards Mr. Qiu.

The old man jolted.

“Shh—be careful what you say.” A blurred voice of indeterminate gender came from deep within the vortex. “If you want to act low-key, you need humans from Sunken Society to help you with your research…”

Qi Xin’s slender body stopped by the bed. Her neck stretched softly as if it were boneless, and the dark vortex stuck to the tip of Mr. Qiu’s nose.

“You won’t like the news of ‘collective suicide of the members of Sunken Society’… You’ll have to wait for another batch of collaborators to be trained, and the result won’t be any different. Be patient, young one.”

A blatant threat.

Mr. Qiu’s withered throat bobbed.

He began to understand why “that one” wanted to bring down this old trouble.

Considering Qi Xin’s “nature”, her strength as a teammate was average, but her ability to be a hindrance was unparalleled. As long as she wanted to, she could cause them huge trouble at any time.

So far, Qi Xin had basically ignored commands, but fortunately, she hadn’t deliberately sabotaged their actions, though it was difficult to say in the future. It was as if “that one” liked putting in unstable factors to monitor them more than pulling combat power.

And he couldn’t interfere with “that one’s” plan.

“…It’s my fault.” Mr. Qiu laughed dryly. “I spoke out of turn. I just want to save my compatriots, so I became a little anxious.”

The swirl on Qi Xin’s face gradually changed back to her original facial features, but her brows remained extremely cold.

“Compatriots? Your rhetoric is becoming more human.” She retracted her neck and continued to fiddle with the flowers. “It sounds really uncomfortable.”

Mr. Qiu didn’t respond.

“I came back because I wanted to say one thing. I don’t care about your heroism, but I don’t want to be hungry either,” Qi Xin said. “A little advice. You’d better keep your plans to more than 50 years. This generation of humans is interesting, so it’s best to wait for them to weaken before acting.”

The cub was guarding “Zhong Chengshuo” and she couldn’t see through that strange man.

And looking at Shian’s attitude, they only suspected the cub was related to an Evil Spirit. Regarding the truth about Evil Spirits, those poor humans’ understanding wasn’t even skin deep. However, with Fu Xingchuan and Li Nian leading this generation, it was difficult to say how things would develop.

So it was better just to wait another fifty years.

Fifty years later, Fu Xingchuan and Li Nian would be six feet underground and wouldn’t pose any threat. Zhong Chengshuo would become an old man of about eighty years old, and it would be hard to say if he could even get up and down the stairs by himself.

At that time, after the dust settled on the relationship between Shian and the cub and when everything came to fruition, she could just decide how to act.

But… in addition to herself, it was still unknown whether “the other three” were willing to wait another fifty years.

For example, like this Mr. Qiu.

As she expected, Mr. Qiu’s voice suddenly became excited. “Why wait? Did you find anything in Gengsheng Town? I heard that Yellow Millet disappeared without a trace and even Snake Swallowing was taken back by Shian and arranged to go to some ‘rare evil creature reserve’. Can this be done with just Fu Xingchuan’s level alone?”

“Is it the pair of partners that Sunken Society has been paying attention to…?”

Qi Xin’s tone was extremely calm. “Fu Xingchuan did it. He was lucky. Those two evils were not controlled by the imitation and lost their will to fight… As for the two boys from Unit 9… They are considered normal humans.”

She lied smoothly.

“I just comprehensively evaluated the situation of the leaders of Shian and gave you my advice.”

“So your suggestion is to ‘wait fifty years’ before taking action? Do you want me to repeat this over and over again for this worn-out idea?” Mr. Qiu showed an expression of speechlessness.

“Yes, because I hate you, and I hate the other two even more.”

After speaking, Qi Xin straightened her back. She patted the dried flower crumbs on her hand and walked to the door without turning her head.

Mr. Qiu: “Hey.”

The cheap flats knocked against the ground, making a regular tapping sound.

“Hey!”

Qi Xin grabbed the door handle with her right hand and moved in a fluid manner.

“Is it because of ‘his’ death that you’re treating us like this?”

Qi Xin’s hand paused.

She didn’t answer. After a while, Qi Xin left the room quietly, and the door to the ward was gently closed.

“…Bastard.”

Mr. Qiu fell back on the soft pillow at the head of the bed.

With Qi Xin’s perfunctory attitude, he didn’t bother to share the latest information with her. Mr. Qiu just got news in the morning that Shian was about to usher in their triennial joint exercise tournament again.

Shian had always suspected that those two boys from Unit 9 were related to an “Evil Spirit”. The execution mission caused such a big uproar that the subsequent observation wouldn’t stop immediately.

“But since those two in Unit 9 are just humans, it’s not a big deal.” He moved his withered fingers. “It doesn’t matter if I play around, right?’

……

“Wow.”

One of Mr. Qiu’s targets was amazed.

Yin Ren shifted his attention away from Zhong Chengshuo and looked at the information on the wall—one after another, all of them were special murder cases that occurred after the ‘Divine Descent’.

“Officially, they are my biological parents.”

Zhong Chengshuo paced to one of the newspaper clippings and pointed at a young man and woman above.

The words “serial killers” next to it were particularly eye-catching. Taking a closer look, the words “has been executed” were also written in fine print.

Yin Ren: “……”

He never thought that the process of meeting Zhong Chengshuo’s parents would come a second time, and this second time was even stranger.

For a moment, thoughts swirled in his feverish mind. Lord Ghost King squinted at the information that covered an entire wall, and countless dog-blooded stories quickly turned up in his heart.

“Stop.” He raised his right hand and said confidently, “Wait, let me guess first! When you were a teenager, you found out that you were adopted and decided to investigate the mystery of your own life. During the investigation, you discover that your parents were actually serial killers.”

“You discovered the existence of the Divine Descent and decided to step into this world. You thoroughly understood the events of the year, your parents’ motives, and traced the fate of the previous generation. During your investigation, you gradually became King Yama.”

Yin Ren shook his finger and was satisfied with the script he had written.

“Ah, to add a little more suffering element—you discovered your personality problem earlier on and decided to use hunting evil things and murderers to relieve your desire for destruction—am I right?”

Zhong Chengshuo applauded with a blank expression.

Yin Ren snorted. Before he could finish saying “old ginger is spicier*”, his boyfriend solemnly commented.

*(还是老的辣) Idiom referring to older, more experienced people are usually wiser and more capable than younger people. || In this context, he’s saying that because he’s older than Zhong Chengshuo, based on his life experience, he can come up with this kind of story about Zhong Chengshuo’s life.

“Amazing.” Zhong Chengshuo stopped applauding. “I can’t believe you got nothing right.”

Yin Ren: “?!”

The corners of Yin Ren’s mouth twitched. “If… If Shian finds something wrong in the future, let’s use this to mislead them!”

Zhong Chengshuo tilted his head and thought for a while, then nodded reluctantly.

“So what’s the situation with your biological parents?” Yin Ren continued, asking cautiously.

“Scums like Guo Laifu. These are just the usual investigations. I have no special interest in them.”

“What about hunting evil things?”

“Researching equipment and gear burns money, and I need money.”

“What about… torturing murderers?!”

“Need subject data.” Zhong Chengshuo explained seriously. “Do you want to see their brain CT and blood hormone index?”

Yin Ren was stunned.

Every time he felt that Comrade Xiao Zhong’s plan was too far-fetched, this person could always bring him back down to earth with a thud.

“Then you’re studying Divine Descent,” Yin Ren asked almost hopelessly, “It’s not out of personal interest, right?”

This time, there was no answer from Zhong Chengshuo.

“Step by step.” He thought for a while before replying. “When our relationship goes further, I’ll tell you. Just like a bank card pin, these are secrets belonging to the degree of marriage.”

“Well, if that’s what you say…”

Inwardly,  Yin Ren felt extremely frustrated and couldn’t refute him.

So he decided to spread this pain.

Yin Ren took out Dog Thing and prepared to slap it on the table. Just as he was about to do so, he suddenly hit the brakes, carefully removed Yellow Millet and the little hamster, then slammed Dog Thing onto the table.

Dog Thing: “Woof, woof, woof…”

“Now you’re barking.” Yin Ren cracked his knuckles. “Honesty is the best policy. This is the perfect place to explain yourself.”

“What the hell is up with Qi Xin?”

Chapter 191

Wang Chao thought it was a good thing his boss suddenly realized and took the initiative to see his A’Chen Gege.

In line with the principle of respecting the privacy of adults, Comrade Xiao Wang turned on the 360-degree surveillance cameras in their home without any blind spots, and he even thoughtfully chose a location near the bathroom. He thought he understood this very well.

Unfortunately, when the picture appeared, he thought the surveillance at home was broken, because no matter how he adjusted the timeline, no one had ever entered or left the bathroom. What was more terrifying was that the corridor light in front of the bathroom was never turned on. He swallowed, turned his head cautiously, and said, “Boss, it may be that something big happened. Either A’Chen Gege is living at the police station or he doesn’t like to shower!”

God knew how he came up with such a reason as not liking showering, but Xing Conglian’s face turned ugly.

He instantly pulled up the shot of the foyer on the screen. No one, no one, no one…

As the timeline rewound, the final scene captured by the hallway surveillance camera was actually the footage of A’Chen Gege leaving the house on the night when that dumbass Huang Ze came to their home.

Thinking back to the passionate scene he witnessed that day, Wang Chao’s mind was in turmoil. He hoped that Huang Ze, that idiot, wouldn’t play any tricks like “if I can’t have you, no one can,” and after running through countless scenarios of imprisonment in his mind, Wang Chao’s body was electrified.

Xing Conglian still didn’t speak. When Wang Chao looked back, his boss’ face was so cold that it could freeze the entire rainforest.

He trembled and said, “Boss, take a deep breath first. Things may not be what you think!”

Xing Conglian stretched out his hand and pointed to Lin Chen’s hand on the screen. “Zoom in here.”

Wang Chao followed his orders. There were almost no clues from the picture, but it was faintly visible that the gauze on Lin Chen’s palm seemed to be bleeding.

“What’s the matter, Boss?”

“He went out to bandage his wound.”

“And then didn’t come back?”

When Wang Chao said this, he regretted it. When he mentioned the words “didn’t come back”, he felt like he had fallen into a freezer. If he knew that A’Chen Gege would disappear, then the Dana Rainforest was nothing. His boss would probably tie A’Chen Gege to his belt even if he went to Mars.

“Do you need me to check the surveillance at the entrance of the alley that day?” he asked worriedly.

“No need.” There was no discernible emotion in Xing Conglian’s tone. “Just check the missing persons record.”

Wang Chao’s heart trembled as it overflowed with a bad premonition that he couldn’t press the keyboard. “Boss…”

“If you’re asked to check, then check it.”

Wang Chao nodded and opened the database. He entered the name and pressed the Enter key tremblingly. The progress bar quickly ended. In the list of missing persons, Lin Chen’s name suddenly appeared. His photo was still the same as when he joined the police force. In a white shirt with a blue background, his face was calm, as if it were just yesterday.

Wang Chao choked so much that he couldn’t speak.

“Huang Ze, Meijing, and Xiang Ye; he has offended so many people. It’s my fault for being too careless,” Xing Conglian said indifferently.

Although there wasn’t much emotion in his boss’ tone, Wang Chao had been with Xing Conglian for so many years that he instantly sensed a deep regret in the tone. In short, his boss had always been in control of the overall situation, so regret seemed like the kind of thing that was impossible for him.

Wang Chao turned around, but he didn’t know how to comfort him.

However, to his surprise, his boss took out his phone and called the police station.

On the other end of the line.

Comrade Zhang Xiaolong hadn’t closed her eyes for three days and nights. With Wang Chao absent, they lacked the main force for checking electronic materials, so even she was dragged to watch videos. However, no matter how hard they tried, the minivan disappeared on an unmonitored path like a ghost. So many days had passed that Consultant Lin could be tied up in any corner of the world. According to the on-site investigation, the kidnapper’s methods were so professional that Zhang Xiaolong couldn’t help but think of a bad outcome.

Therefore, when her phone vibrated and the caller ID flashed, she thought she was seeing things that were caused by a few days of sleeplessness.

She picked up the phone tremblingly and heard Captain Xing’s low, hoarse voice coming from the other end.

“Lin Chen is missing?” Was the first thing that Xing Conglian said.

“Xing… Captain…” The police officer shuddered and instantly raised her voice. “Where have you been?!” As she said this, tears flowed out involuntarily.

“On some other official duties. Tell me what happened and send the relevant materials to Wang Chao.” The voice on the other end of the phone was so calm and crisp that she thought she was talking to some robot. But it was probably because the voice on the other end of the line was emotionless that it allowed her to gradually calm down. She talked intermittently for a while, mentioning the weird appointment letter and the staff at the pet hospital who disappeared together with Lin Chen, and finally, there was only the sound of even breathing coming from the other end of the line.

“That’s probably it,” she said.

“I see. Thank you, and I’m sorry.”

Xing Conglian hung up the phone.

Wang Chao had received the relevant materials from the police officer. The police in Hongjing had launched a search force that spanned two provinces, but to no avail. They were far away in Dana, so how could they find clues so quickly?

Xing Conglian was so anxious that he watched the surveillance video outside the pet shop over and over again, but he could only watch Lin Chen’s bound hands in the dark night and the moment he was pushed into the rain curtain. The heavy rain was pouring as Lin Chen’s thin figure disappeared at the end of the alley.

Wang Chao’s eyes were red. He turned his head and saw that his boss had been staring at the screen with a cold expression. His dark green eyes were solemn, but he couldn’t perceive any emotions at all.

“Boss, what shall we do?” Wang Chao rubbed his nose as he asked.

“Let Zhang Long bring twice as many bombs and have him show up before 9 tomorrow. Tell him don’t come if he’s late.”

After he finished speaking, Xing Conglian turned and walked into Dr. Duan’s cabin.

At that time, Kang An and Xiao Wu were walking in from outside. Wang Chao rubbed his eyes and tried to hide his emotions.

“Xiao Wang Chao, why are you crying? Where’s the boss?” Kang An asked carelessly.

Wang Chao looked up and saw the obliviously happy and relaxed face of Kang An, and punched it.

……

Xing Conglian was standing in the hut.

The moon was still clear and cold. Duan Wanshan was asleep on the haystack. Probably because the runned-down room in this dilapidated factory was too quiet, he always felt like the words he had just said to Duan Wanshan seemed to be floating in his ears.

All that “I’ve met someone with determination and perseverance, who even dares to pursue their love” speech now seemed like boastful words coming from a fool.

Xing Conglian clenched his fists and punched the wall.

Powder puffed out, and the noise outside the cabin rose. Xing Conglian was standing by the window. Not far away was the afterimage of the yellow searchlight column sweeping across Zaratul’s camp, and farther away was the eternal night in the rainforest.

Like some slow silent movie, Lin Chen’s thin figure was finally pushed into the rain curtain. He was blindfolded, but he still raised his head and looked around blankly, as if looking for someone.

Xing Conglian unclasped his fists. Originally, he thought that a lifetime was ample time, but now it seemed that things were quite tense.

He was thinking that if the “sorry” he had said to Lin Chen in the square at that time would be the last thing he said to Lin Chen in this life, then how should he live his life in the future?

Thinking about it, he couldn’t imagine that scenario. With no Lin Chen at home on the balcony drinking tea, no Lin Chen in the police station in front of the desk reading documents, and no Lin Chen to go out together to eat breakfast, there was no one to lead the way, which made life dark and meaningless.

He finally understood why Duan Wanshan was so indifferent to death… because there was no point in living.

Xing Conglian glanced at the calm face of Duan Wanshan, who was lying on the haystack after letting go of everything, and walked out.

Wang Chao was pressing on Kang An’s body as he beat him fiercely, while Xiao Wu and Xiao Liu only dared to stand by and watch.

Naturally, with Kang An’s strength, he could easily control Wang Chao, but he only dared to cover his head, afraid that Wang Chao would punch the ground and injure himself even if he dodged.

Looking at the two people on the ground, Xing Conglian said lightly, “Get up.”

Wang Chao’s eyes weren’t the only thing that became red due to excitement and anger; his whole face turned red.

“Boss.” The young teenager lowered his head slightly, and a tear hung on his lower eyelashes. Xing Conglian stretched out his hand, patted him on the head, and said calmly, “After tomorrow, we’ll go back.”

“Is something wrong, Boss?” Xiao Wu asked anxiously.

“It has nothing to do with you,” Xing Conglian said.

……

7 a.m.

Lin Chen slept soundly, but Xing Conglian stayed up all night. The Gaomeng people who were preparing for the great escape were already making final preparations. Wooden boards secured the broken bones of the wounded, and everyone had divided all the remaining food.

Xing Conglian and his former subordinates had their own independent space.

The police captain’s side face was chiseled and covered with growing stubble. His gaze was cold enough to drop ice chips. While everyone in the room was still asleep, he folded up the mine terrain map and the communicator’s red light flashed.

At the same time, a ghostly figure appeared on the banks of the Dana River.

Because the dense branches and leaves blocked most of the light, it was almost impossible to see the face of the person. Only a lean figure could be seen quickly taking off their coat, revealing the matte custom wetsuit inside.

The figure squatted down but didn’t go into the water. Instead, they carefully folded the clothes that had just fallen on the soil and even their socks meticulously. Finally, they carefully stuffed all their clothes into a waterproof bag, looked excitedly at the humid and dark sky of the rainforest, then jumped into the dark Dana River.

……

Langli Bay was located on a tributary of the Dana River. A reinforced concrete and steel bridge built by the French in 1912 spanned the river. The bridge was primarily built to facilitate the transportation of precious wood species and rare metals from the depths of the rainforest. However, control over Langli Bay changed hands several times. Eventually, the rising rainforest overlord, King Zaratul, managed to gain control over Langli Bay Bridge, thus controlling the transportation hub leading deeper into the rainforest.

10 minutes past 7.

The air was filled with the fishy smell unique to the rainforest. Even the rough river water under the bridge couldn’t blow away the stagnant smell.

The soldiers on bridge guard duty began to wait for the shift change as usual. To be honest, although the rainforest was remote, the equipment of the Zaratul Tribe wasn’t too bad. At least in the Dana Region, where second-hand Polish AKs had become standard, the weapons owned by King Zaratul, who acted as a proxy for a great power and had not rusted, were enough to make him dominate this area.

15 minutes past 7.

There was still a quarter of an hour before it was time to change shifts. The soldiers, who had been standing for three hours, had reached their most sleepy moment. One was physical hardship, while the other was psychological slack. After all, in the Dana Region, no one had dared rush into King Zaratul’s military facilities for many years.

The people waiting to cross the bridge had already formed a short queue, when a modified military Hummer attracted the attention of the soldiers guarding the bridge.

There was a cocky young man wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses sitting in the driver’s seat. The seasoned soldier recognized the watch on the young man’s hand as a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, which was extremely valuable and the most important hard currency. Several soldiers guarding the bridge looked at each other and quickly let the refugees blocked in front of them pass through the bridge and onto the iron fence before stopping the Hummer.

The young man driving the car was still cocky. His short hair was fixed upright with hairspray. Facing a dozen AKs, he didn’t lift his head. The first thing he said turned out to be foul-mouthed. “Fuck!”

The soldiers guarding the bridge were scolded in a daze. How could anyone come to Dana dare be so arrogant?

The arrogant young man wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses in the driver’s seat was very casual when faced with the cold barrel of a gun. He lifted his sunglasses over his head and pulled out a pass from the partition, along with some US dollar bills that were also tucked in the partition, which scattered on the ground. The young man impatiently waved away the bills in front of the car and spoke in broken Dana language, “Idiot, have you heard of Anda Mining? Your boss wants to ask my dad to buy biomineral mining technology. Get the hell out of laozi’s way.”

The words “Anda Mining” and “biological mining technology” were like a foreign language to ordinary bridge guards, but it seemed that this was a prince of a certain company that had business dealings with Zaratul. Someone took the pass and immediately reported it to check the identity.

The quick-eye soldier had already opened the car door and retrieved two shiny guns from the trunk. The streamlined gun god and the black, cool gun body made the soldier holding the gun handle cheer happily.

“Poor bastards. Never seen a gun before?” The young man cursed.

The soldier in charge of verification quickly returned, and the excitement of catching a fat sheep was no longer there. He returned the pass and then saluted in an informal manner.

The young man flipped his middle finger to all the black guards guarding the bridge and honked the horn to signal them to open the iron gate.

As the young man stepped on the gas, just before the modified Hummer passed the checkpoint, for some unknown reason, the arrogant prince in the car had a thought, and he grabbed the stack of US bills on the dashboard and threw them out of the window.

“Kneel and call me Dad!” the young man shouted in Chinese.

The picture finally ended with the arrogant laughter of the young man and the smoke and dust rushing out of the exhaust pipe.

So much so that no one noticed that, while all the soldiers were scrambling for the money, a small and inconspicuous directional mine flew out from under the Hummer’s chassis, as if remotely controlled, skimmed across the bridge deck, and closely stuck to the pier.

……

When Xing Conglian saw his neatly dressed subordinate, he was sitting next to Duan Wanshan.

A few minutes ago, the Gaomeng people on night watch reported the news that Duan Wanshan refused to evacuate together.

Sitting next to the doctor, Xing Conglian was no longer as irritable as before and was extremely arrogant and cold. He stopped talking nonsense, took out a pistol from his pocket, loaded it, and pointed at the Gaomeng man in front of him as he said to the doctor, who was more concerned with the Gaomeng peoples safety than helping them, “I know you have many reasons not to want to be a burden to us, but I also have a reason to try to get you out alive. Cooperate well. Otherwise, none of the Gaomeng people here will leave alive.”

Perhaps it was because Xing Conglian’s attitude was so resolute that it was like hardened steel. Even Duan Wanshan, who was about to die, was also aroused with a trace of bloodlust. “I understand.” The doctor nodded hard.

Comrade Zhao Hu had pushed open the door and entered the room in this situation. He saw his boss holding a gun, his eyes full of murderous intent. The first thing he said was, “Boss, whoever you want us to take care of, we’ll take care of them!”

Xing Conglian put down his gun and looked at the equipment on Zhao Hu’s back and said lightly, “I didn’t ask you to come here to talk. Follow me.”

……

Duan Yang got up early. At 5 in the morning, he had already gotten up. The lights weren’t turned on in the lab, so it was still dim. He washed his face with cold water. After checking Lin Chen’s condition, he began the final preparations before their kidnapping operation.

Inside the dissecting room, he turned his back to the surveillance and took out plasma extracted from the body of the rhesus monkey he killed yesterday. Just like the chicken and duck blood cubes in the market, he added sodium chloride to the plasma, which made the blood of the rhesus monkey coagulated into clots. Duan Yang carefully crushed it with force, turning it into a disgusting semi-solid state. He drew a tube of it with a syringe, attached the needle, and remained calm, as if he were conducting the most ordinary scientific experiment.

After doing all this, he began to pretend to be busy. When it was five minutes short of eight, the outermost door opened, and a thin white figure slowly passed through the dense monkey cage. The unlucky monkeys were frightened, causing them to yell.

When the last door opened, Lin Chen groaned in pain before waking up.

The weirdo wearing the porcelain-white mask stood in front of them.

After Lin Chen’s analysis yesterday, Duan Yang suddenly felt that the weirdo, who looked like he could eat human blood raw, was just an unorthodox cheat.

“How’s the progress?” the inorganic electronic voice rang out.

“Because you haven’t seen a real psychopath, the truly terrifying people are always those who seem harmless.”

Duan Yang meditated on what Lin Chen had said to him. According to the original plan, he said to the masked man, “I need to see a paper to study a new purification method.”

He pointed his finger at the computer in the corner of the lab and asked, “Can I use the computer?”

Although he couldn’t see the masked man’s expression clearly, he still sensed that the other party was looking at him up and down with hesitant eyes.

“This is important. No researcher’s work should be conducted without consulting relevant literature,” Duan Yang emphasized.

Finally, the masked man nodded and walked to the computer desk in the corner. “Tell me what you want me to check.”

Duan Yang hung his hand to his side, followed the masked man, and stood with his back to the surveillance.

“Close your eyes!” The masked man sitting in front of the computer said coldly.

Duan Yang turned around as he spoke, and after hearing six simple keyboard tapping sounds, Duan Yang turned his head and put his hand on the masked man lightly.

The masked man trembled suddenly, and a chill ran down his spine to the back of his head. Just as he wanted to move, he felt a needle about to pierce his skin.

The idiot young man, whom he didn’t even want to look at before, was now speaking to him in a very cold and heartless tone. “Don’t move. In fact, the coldness you feel on your back is from a needle.”

The young man paused, then continued to calmly say, “The needle is a disposable product in the lab, but the contents inside are quite special. I guarantee that as soon as you show any reaction to being kidnapped or shout for help, the contents of the needle will be injected into your body within one-tenth of a second. Of course, you’re probably asking, what’s so terrible inside? I can only say, Mr. Masked Weirdo, have you ever heard of Ebola*?”

*A viral hemorrhagic fever in humans and other primates, caused by ebolaviruses. Symptoms typically start anywhere between two days and three weeks after infection. The first symptoms are usually fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches. These are usually followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash and decreased liver and kidney function, at which point some people begin to bleed both internally and externally. It kills between 25% and 90% of those infected – about 50% on average. The virus is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as blood from infected humans or animals.

The masked man thought, ‘I’ve been in the rainforest for so long. Of course I have heard of Ebola. How the hell haven’t I heard of this deadly virus that has ravaged Africa and killed tens of thousands of people?’ But in order to maintain the advantage, he still asked in an extremely calm tone, “Do you think I’m that stupid? This laboratory is completely under my control. Where did you get the Ebola virus from? If you want to make up a story, at least make it more believable.”

“According to your request, when I checked the monkeys yesterday, I found a group of strange sick monkeys. Those monkeys had congested eyes and were dying. Based on some experience, I performed a dissection on one of the monkeys. Of course, your dissection room can’t achieve the level of a Level 4 biochemical protection, so when I found that the monkey’s blood was almost coagulated after it was cut open, it was too late, and I was exposed to the virus. You should know that the blood of the deceased is semi-coagulated, which is a typical feature of the Ebola virus.” There was a faint resentment in the young man’s tone. “I don’t know if I have been infected with the virus, but if I get it, I will drag you down with me, understand?”

The trembling and anger in the young man’s voice made the masked man terrified. He raised his head and subconsciously looked at the dissection room. The door was closed, but through the glass, he could see the horrible monkey corpse lying on the dissection table. As the man said, the rhesus monkey’s blood showed a coagulated dark red color, which was disgusting.

“Calm down!” he said reluctantly. “It may not be Ebola. It can’t be just a coincidence.”

“Cut the crap.” The young man raised his voice and leaned closer to the masked man’s ear. “Of course, you don’t have to believe it, but in any case, we’ll die together!”

The masked man swallowed, and his voice became cautious. “What do you want?”

“I want to make a deal.”

“Do you think you can get out of here alive by killing me with a virus?”

“If we can’t get out of here, you’ll immediately be injected with a needle full of Ebola. The astronomical number of viruses in it will completely swallow you within a week. You’ll bleed and die miserably. Even the shit and urine flowing out of your body will carry coagulated plasma. You can certainly take a gamble,” the young man responded.

There was an imperceptible tremor in the electronic sound. The masked man took a deep breath. “Don’t be impulsive. Everything can be discussed.”

“There’s nothing to talk about,” the young man said simply. “Answer my question. Who do you serve? Don’t try to lie.”

“Zara…tul.”

“The armed militants of the Dana Region?”

“Yes…yes.”

“Find the official website of this armed organization online and show it to me,” Duan Yang said.

The masked man trembled violently and opened the NoFacebooK homepage of the Zaratul Tribe.

Duan Yang compared the patterns of the python and jaguar above and nodded.

“Next, take out your phone and record a video.”

“Why?”

“In order to cooperate happily, we must have the appropriate bargaining chips,” Duan Yang said coldly. “Please admit in English that you slept with Zaratul’s wife.”

The masked man felt incredulous. “What did you say?”

At that moment, a weak but rather calm voice sounded from his side. Lin Chen at some point had stood up and was leaning against a table as he explained, “He means that because we don’t speak the same language in the Dana Region and are very afraid of being easily betrayed in the process of being taken out with you, we have to find some leverage on you. I’ll store it in a timed email that, if not resolved within 24 hours, will reveal a video of you and Mrs. Zaratul having an affair with the organization’s official email and message board. If we can successfully escape from this place under your protection, I’ll fulfill my promise to cancel the scheduled email.”

Although the black-haired young man in front of him looked extremely weak and seemed about to collapse, the threat in his calm tone was even more threatening than the one who was holding him hostage with the needle.

“The countdown is three seconds,” the black-haired young man said. “Three…”

“I’ll record it. I’ll record it!” The masked man replied hastily.

With the press of the Enter key, an email that might take his life lay quietly in the mailbox, waiting to be sent out.

The cold needle was finally withdrawn from his back.

“Where is the medicine I asked you to find? Did you bring it?” The doctor holding the deadly virus asked.

“I was just about to say that the Langli Bridge was blown up so the car delivering the medicine… couldn’t get in,” the masked man said in horror.

Chapter 190

Duan Yang turned off most of the lights in the laboratory. He then turned on a table lamp and sat down beside Lin Chen.

He was afraid that Lin Chen would suddenly not last in the middle of the night, so he could only use the most primitive method to disinfect Lin Chen’s wounds regularly. Fortunately, there was enough anhydrous alcohol in the lab. Although it wasn’t much use, he still cut open a lab coat, dipped it in diluted alcohol, and let Lin Chen clip it under his armpits and apply it to his forehead to lower his body temperature.

Surprisingly, Lin Chen cooperated.

There was a faint smell of alcohol in the air. Duan Yang felt that he was almost drunk. Thinking of Lin Chen’s previous words, he looked at the haggard face of Mr. Consultant lying next to him. He actually asked subconsciously, “Consultant Lin, what kind of person do you love?”

After speaking out, Duan Yang felt regret. He would surely be scolded by Lin Chen again for asking such a question.

“A very handsome person.”

What Duan Yang didn’t expect was that Lin Chen actually answered him.

“Eh? Handsome? I thought you would use some other adjective.”

“Is it too vulgar?”

“No, no.” Duan Yang thought to himself, ‘Lin Chen’s taste is really different that he actually likes handsome girls*.’

*Clarity: Lin Chen isn’t using any specific gender pronouns when he’s talking to Duan Yang, so Duan Yang doesn’t know that person is a man.

“That’s right. Handsome for everyone to see, but only I know their inner beauty,” Lin Chen added.

“Then… Do they know that you love them?” Duan Yang felt a bit tangled, but he still tried asking.

“Yes, I confessed.”

As if seeing through his thoughts, Lin Chen opened his eyes slightly and looked askance at him. “Is the next thing you want to ask is: Consultant Lin, how did you confess?”

“I’m just… asking.” Duan Yang hesitated.

“At that time… it was basically an accident. I forcibly kissed them,” Lin Chen said calmly.

Duan Yang was shocked again. “Didn’t the girl get scared by that?”

“What girl? He’s a man.”

Hearing this, Duan Yang almost bit his tongue. “What… What do you like about men?”

“You have a crush on your Teacher Duan yet you don’t allow me to like men?”

“That’s not what I meant.” Duan Yang hurriedly shook his hand. “But is the person you like also a policeman?”

“Yes. My superior.”

Lin Chen was quite ill, but he was still talking to him in a decisive tone, as if his physical illness couldn’t affect his will.

Duan Yang asked, “Will there be any problems, such as disagreement from your leaders or gossip among colleagues?”

“A lot of people talk nonsense every day. Do I have to listen to everything they say and keep it in my heart?”

“You really are…” Duan Yang couldn’t help leaning against the experiment table and stretched out his legs. “Amazing.”

“What kind of evaluation is this?”

“To be honest, Consultant Lin, I really want to be someone like you…”

Lin Chen said, “Is the following sentence: If I were like you, I might already be with Teacher now.”

“It’s impossible… It’s impossible for Teacher to be with me,” Duan Yang interrupted.

“Just say what you want. I won’t ask why.”

Duan Yang lowered his head and looked into Lin Chen’s dark, calm eyes. “Because I did something very excessive to Teacher.”

Lin Chen frowned, and his expression became serious. “What did you do?”

Duan Yang gently covered his face with his hands as he recalled that night. The feeling of remorse submerged him again like sea water. “That day, our laboratory was involved in a big project, and everyone stayed up for many days and nights, but the seniors were excited. Yes, Teacher also came by that day. There was something wrong with the experiment. Teacher stayed late and said he would sleep in the lounge. If there was any problem, we could call him at any time. There weren’t enough beds in the lounge, so originally I slept on the floor next to Teacher’s bed, but Teacher asked me to sleep on the bed so I wouldn’t catch a cold, so I went up. I… I slept on the same bed as Teacher.”

“Hmm… and then what?”

“Then, we fell asleep. I really like Teacher, so I couldn’t help but hold him and kiss him while he slept next to me. Teacher must’ve known. After that, he seemed very upset. When the experiment ended, he never came back that summer. Later, we received news that he had resigned to participate in medical assistance work. He must’ve known that I had kissed him and disliked me, but didn’t want to affect me, so he left…” Duan Yang paused, took a deep breath, then continued, “At the beginning, I called him every day and sent countless messages. I wanted to apologize to him and say sorry, but his phone was always off, and he never replied to my messages. Later, I heard news about him from an older student who followed in his footsteps. I asked her to ask Teacher for me, and he clearly expressed that he didn’t want me to come to Dana and that I should stay in China. Looking back now, I realize that I wasn’t brave enough. I should have bought a plane ticket and gone there. It’s only a short distance away, and I could have apologized to him face to face after taking a few more trips.” Duan Yang’s mood became more depressed. He couldn’t speak when he thought about all the emails that he sent that went unanswered. “It’s all my fault. I’m sorry… I’m really sorry…”

“Come here,” Lin Chen said suddenly.

Duan Yang looked at him with red eyes.

“Lower your head a little.”

Following Lin Chen’s instructions, he lowered his head inexplicably. The next moment, a thin palm gently covered the top of his head and then rubbed his hair fiercely.

“Stupid. If it’s because he hates your kisses and hugs, he can think of 10,000 ways to punish you. Why would he leave on his own?”

Duan Yang heard Lin Chen say.

……

When Duan Wanshan began his story, Xing Conglian already felt regret.

Since Duan Wanshan was dying, no matter how sweet the story he told, it would naturally be a tragedy. Although the tragedy was thought-provoking, he was still in a bad mood as he listened to it.

“Actually, I’m not that great. I gave up my high paying medical job in China and came here to the Dana Region to aid in medical care because I fell in love with one of my students.”

Xing Conglian’s cigarette just burned out, almost burning his fingers. He looked at the doctor sitting against the wall on the haystack and asked, “So scandalous? A teacher-student relationship?”

“Yes, and it’s a boy,” Duan Wanshan said frankly.

Xing Conglian stared at Duan Wanshan with wide eyes.

Probably seeing his reaction, Duan Wanshan said, “At that time, I felt like falling in love with a male student was like a bolt from the blue. He was such a naïve young man who was taller than me and surrounded me every day, calling me ‘Teacher, Teacher’, wholeheartedly respecting and admiring me. But all I could think about were things beyond a teacher-student relationship. Social norms told me that this was called a teacher-student romance, which was slightly better than other improper relationships. I felt like something wasn’t right about it. Anyway, falling in love is just like taking drugs; both stimulate the release of dopamine in the brain. I felt happy when I saw him and thought I liked him very much. To be honest, I couldn’t explain what ‘liking’ meant. There’s no reason for liking someone anyway. So, compared to others, I paid special attention to him. He thought I was targeting him, so he always looked at me with fawn-like eyes as he ran around me every day, just to make me a little happier.”

Duan Wanshan’s tone, when he talked about this matter, was indifferent. He didn’t even have the slightest painful reaction and seemed happy even.

“From when you like someone to when you make up your mind to leave them, something must have happened between now and then, right?”

“Of course. At first, it was my own inability to let go. Although I liked him, I didn’t dare pursue him. I also thought about confessing my feelings to him, but I felt embarrassed and just let it drag on. Until one day, I heard that he got a girlfriend. I watched as that girl walked into the school holding his hand. He reached out and rubbed her head. It was a beautiful sight… That’s when I realized that I could finally let go.”

“You don’t call this letting go.”

Just as Duan Wanshan put the bottle on the ground, he couldn’t find it even after searching for a while. Xing Conglian looked at him with unfocused eyes, afraid that the toxins from sepsis had invaded his optic nerve, causing his vision to gradually deteriorate. Xing Conglian reached out and picked up the bottle of “Niulan Mountain” Erhuotou, handing it to Duan Wanshan.

“Yeah, it’s not called letting go if you’ve never had it, right?” Duan Wanshan took a sip of the alcohol. “At that time, I happened to see the introduction to the Dana Region and the recruitment notice from Doctors Without Borders, so I went to participate. Looking back now, I was probably angry because I saw him with a girlfriend, but I had no reason to be. I could only torture myself. Now that I’ve risked my life here, I do have some regrets when I think back on it. Why couldn’t I think clearly back then?”

“It’s really stupid,” Xing Conglian commented.

In a daze, Xing Conglian seemed to see Duan Wanshan flipping him off with his middle finger. This kind of action was done by a man who looked like an old farmer and had the air of a suave scholar. It was so incongruous that he didn’t have time to react before he heard Duan Wanshan continue.

“It doesn’t hurt to stand and talk less. When it comes to relationship problems, not everyone can be like you; having determination, perseverance, and even full ability to pursue what they love. Many people don’t even know their feelings and let go of true love in hesitation…”

“Of course I’m not in pain because I have encountered someone with determination and perseverance, who even dares to pursue what they love,” Xing Conglian said.

Duan Wanshan almost spat out the alcohol he just swallowed. His face was flushed, and he turned his head as he angrily said, “Don’t you think it’s too much to show off your affection to a dying person?”

Xing Conglian spread his hands. “I’m just telling the truth.”

“I envy you very much.” Duan Wanshan raised the alcohol bottle and saluted him from afar.

“I envy myself too,” Xing Conglian said solemnly.

That night, Duan Wanshan probably really regarded him as a confidant and told him many things.

He hoped to spread the news and let his colleagues at the Dana General Hospital temporarily act as the dean and manage the hospital affairs. While on the topic, Duan Wanshan also mentioned that the hospital was currently lacking funds and that it would be great if someone could invest more.

Xing Conglian always felt that the other party was taking the opportunity to rob the rich to help the poor, but people like Duan Wanshan had wishes before they died that weren’t so simple. He even asked if he knew any wealthy people and hoped that someone could invest more money to facilitate the establishment of a pre-observation station for the Dana Rainforest viruses. Duan Wanshan said that if such an observation had existed at that time, HIV might not have had a chance to spread from the African rainforest and kill tens of millions of people worldwide, so it was quite important.

Duan Wanshan really talked too much. In the end, Xing Conglian couldn’t help it and asked, “Don’t you think it’s too much to ask for so much from someone you just met?”

“What can I do? I’m dying and there are still so many things unfinished. What’s wrong with just telling someone about it?” Duan Wanshan said.

Probably because he was too righteous, Xing Conglian couldn’t find the words to refute. “You might as well talk about you and your student and if you need me to bring anything to him.”

Duan Wanshan shook his head. “It’s too deliberate to specifically let him know that I’m dead and bring him my relics.”

“Then what do you want?”

“I think he’d make a great doctor.”

……

Xing Conglian walked out of the room and closed the door gently.

Many of the Gaomeng people in the factory were instantly awoken and looked at him with vigilant but questioning eyes.

Without words, Xing Conglian glanced at the door and nodded to everyone, indicating that Dr. Duan was still alive, but his life was only temporary.

Xing Conglian looked around. Wang Chao was operating the laptop in the corner, and everyone else was gone.

Xing Conglian walked over, patted the young teenager on the shoulder, and said to him, “Pull up the surveillance at home. I want to see him.”

Evil As Humans Ch113

Chapter 113: Two-way

Gengsheng Town.

Li Nian stood blankly in front of the wonton stall. This time, there was no Fu Xingchuan by his side. Instead, he was replaced by several groups of official staff. The closed loop line was empty, and under the setting sun, the exposed steel and concrete looked like dusty bones.

The fog had cleared, and order in Gengsheng Town was gradually restored.

The situation of the elderly wasn’t optimistic. After such a loss, a little more than half were still resistant. The younger people were relatively better. According to a young girl, the previous state was “like a long dream”.

“No one thought this place was run down before.” She pointed to her own bakery. “We find it very comfortable and no different from a new area. The surroundings are the same too. We’ve never heard anyone say it’s dirty or old. It all looks perfectly normal.”

“It’s the same for attacking outsiders. I don’t know what’s going on, but I really feel that ‘everyone is like this’, ‘this is how things are done here’, and ‘they brought it upon themselves by coming into our territory’… At the time, I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it. I was just focused on the idea that once the ‘enemy’ was gone, we could go back to living our lives like before.”

The girl smiled awkwardly.

“Guilt? I feel a little of it occasionally… But everyone around me is like this, with strong conviction, so…”

But now they were awake.

This kind of sudden change in thinking could easily induce psychological problems, so relevant medical personnel took over. Li Nian was rubbing his voice recorder while taking detailed notes.

Over this small mountain town, there were still puzzles, like dark clouds.

The problem with the town itself could be explained by Shian’s existing theories.

Both evil beings and humans were affected by the perception of specific emotions. The perpetrator of the evil qi corruption was extremely powerful, such that it surpassed that of ordinary ability users, and the value of the remaining traces was close to that of half an Evil Spirit.

Coupled with Yellow Millet, who was good at influencing cognition and was used as a “megaphone”, it wasn’t impossible for the perpetrator to use his ability to cover the entire mountain town for a long time.

…The problem was that there was a serious issue with the identity records of the perpetrator.

One of the puzzles.

According to existing information, Shian only knew that the source of the disaster was a human, and the corruption was caused by Sunken Society. As for whether the perpetrator was a man or woman and where they came from, there were no records.

Not broken, not blank.

The metaphysical post could no longer see the words or hear the recording. While top science posts could still do it, they couldn’t get any information…

Li Nian clearly knew that there were relevant records, and those words were lying quietly there, but whenever he read the corresponding paragraph, his brain seemed to suddenly lose its ability to analyze information.

The knowledge flashed through his eyes and slid through his ears, but he couldn’t understand it.

Even if it could be logically inferred that “it’s related to the last mayor of the mountain town”, Li Nian’s attention would be diverted once he turned away.

This was probably a “cognitive distortion” of extremely abnormal intensity.

But the principle, where it came from, and the constant interference of attention were things that Li Nian couldn’t deduce.

It was dinner time at this moment. Li Nian was playing with the recorder, and his eyes unconsciously turned to the chopsticks in the hands of the owner of the wonton shop.

That was the second puzzle.

Not long after Unit 9 left, backup found the real Qi Xin in the abandoned mines. When she was discovered, Ms. Qi was dying and was transferred by Shian to a large hospital at the foot of the mountain.

The real Ms. Qi wasn’t seriously injured and woke up quickly. However, after waking up, she kept crying and didn’t recognize anyone or respond to anything.

While a nurse was getting her medication, Ms. Qi inserted a chopstick into her own heart.

There was no residual evil qi on her body, so Shian could only identify the incident as suicide.

Li Nian had personally drawn a portrait of the “Qi Xin” who acted with Unit 9 and the police quickly returned the results…

It was Anonymous who had been missing for several years.

The unnamed woman was in a car accident, and the hospital was barely able to save her life but couldn’t treat her brain trauma. While the hospital was looking for the woman’s family, the woman herself removed the ventilator she was on and disappeared one night.

Many years later, she appeared alone in a remote mountain town and devoured the unknown perpetrator.

Devour.

This was the testimony given by Yin Ren and Zhong Chengshuo, which also explained the strange distribution of corruption in their data.

…They hadn’t even settled accounts with Yin Ren and Zhong Chengshuo yet. If those two were really spies from some other organization, things would be much simpler.

Li Nian sighed and pinched his brows fiercely.

The situation was bizarre and outrageous, and the clues were pitiful. There were all kinds of incomprehensible situations and inexplicable traces in front of him. He vaguely recalled the events of 28 years ago, when the Divine Descent caused chaos everywhere.

As a result, Professor Li was just about to fall in reminiscence when his phone vibrated.

“Hello?”

He listened for a while.

“National joint exercise competition… Fu Xingchuan, have you finally gone crazy?”

“Isn’t this an opportunity delivered to our door? If Yin Ren is really… ahem, that person, dealing with this small situation is as easy as cutting vegetables. We can also keep an eye on Xiao Zhong, so it’s like killing two birds with one stone.”

Li Nian also pinched his brows red.

He understood Fu Xingchuan’s subtext.

Those two despicable guys were still officially classified as C-level, but they really couldn’t assign them C-level tasks. Special Operations Unit 8, which was actually C-level, had already dug through half of the city’s sewers.

Fu Xingchuan didn’t think that “investigating the sounds coming from the sewers in the middle of the night” could test anything. It was better to throw these two hot potatoes on a big stage to see what else they could do.

The national joint exercise competition gathered masters from all over the world. This was indeed a safer direction, but…

“Besides, the matter of Gengsheng Town won’t be finished for a while. It will be a long-term case.” On the other end of the line, Fu Xingchuan whispered devilishly. “Lao Li, people have limited energy, so we can’t just ignore it, right?”

“That being said…”

“Yin Ren and Zhong Chengshuo have spoken openly, and those two haven’t done anything bad for the time being, so we just need to be cautious. The priority is Sunken Society and that ‘Qi Xin’,” Fu Xingchuan continued to persuade.

Li Nian: “……”

Li Nian: “Do you just want to find a few top non-science posts to suffer with you?”

Fu Xingchuan: “Fuck off. This is official business.”

Professor Li snorted openly, with no intention of hiding it.

“All right,” he said. “If Yin Ren’s identity is true, then Sunken Society would have less interest in him and Zhong Chengshuo. It might be better to let them go on stage.”

Perhaps it could even lure out a few evil spirits.

……

In the distant city of Haigu, the two people who knew nothing about their upcoming fate.

Yin Ren’s lips slowly left the corner of Zhong Chengshuo’s mouth.

Zhong Chengshuo pursed his lips like a clamshell. His ears had turned red all the way to his neck. He seemed surprised by his own intense reaction and took a quick step towards the fridge, grabbing a glass jar and pressing it hard against his neck to cool down.

“Don’t you want special treatment?” Yin Ren approached him happily.

“Come on, let’s do it again…”

But when he saw what was inside the jar, Yin Ren’s smile slowly faded.

A head of an evil spirit with a solid entity was floating in the glass jar. Its protruding single eye happened to drift over to their side, and the brownish-yellow liquid contrasted with the pale red skin, causing quite a visual impact.

My god, help.

Lord Ghost King watched Zhong Chengshuo roll the glass jar around his neck and carefully put it back into the fridge. Finally, he dug out a can of apple juice from the pile of evil creature specimens and asked, “Do you want a drink?”

Yin Ren: “No… How amazing, Zhong Ge. I’ll drink it. I’ll drink it.”

He almost subconsciously said “no”.

Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes had a rare sparkle in them, and he swiftly set up a chair as he said, “You rest here. I’ll take care of the problem.”

It was rare to see Zhong Chengshuo act so easily and happily.

It would be better if that chair wasn’t the one that he used to tie up Guo Laifu. Yin Ren recognized the torture char in Guo Laifu’s memories at a glance, and his inner panic took a sharp turn.

He held the juice solemnly with both hands and couldn’t help but ponder for a few seconds whether the “problem” that Zhong Chengshuo was going to solve was himself.

But he also felt that this person was very cute, which meant he must have gone crazy. Ah, perhaps this was a manifestation of an Evil Spirit…

There were no outsiders in the basement, so Yin Ren spread his wings on the ground, watching Zhong Chengshuo wade through the sea with one foot deep and the other shallow.

“Give me the phone.” He stretched out his hand.

Dog Thing instantly came back from the dead and shook wildly. “Woof, woof, woof!!!”

“Puff, puff, puff!” Yellow Millet, who was tied to the phone, also shrank back in horror.

Zhong Chengshuo ignored them and shook his hamster keychain. “Or maybe you can take that hamster keychain off and give it to me separately.”

Dog Thing suddenly became quiet, and the ornament kept shaking, pretending to be just another innocent phone accessory.

Yin Ren was taken back.

“This was the first gift you gave me,” Zhong Chengshuo said solemnly. “It has strong evil qi on it. Did you give it to me to ward off evil spirits?”

“…Yes.” Yin Ren was in a daze.

It was obviously not long ago, but at this moment, it felt like that was from a previous life. At that time, he thought that this “boy next door” was just a simple layman.

Yin Ren removed the little hamster with “Blessing and Luck” written on it and put it in Zhong Chengshuo’s palm.

It joined Zhong Chengshuo’s “Wealth and Prosperity” model, and both were placed in the center of the workbench.

Zhong Chengshuo moved quickly, like an assembly line. He walked around the shelves and collected a pile of strange and peculiar tools, gathering them in his arms. Comrade Xiao Zhong was precise, as if his arms were mechanical, as they pinched and carved the two poor hamsters.

Yin Ren watched with a slight pang of heartache—if this person had a bit of metaphysical talent, he would definitely be a top spirit smith.

In less than half an hour, Yin Ren hadn’t finished drinking his apple juice yet, and the hamster with “Blessing and Luck” had met its end. The other hamster with “Wealth and Prosperity” was hung back on its owner’s phone by Zhong Chengshuo.

The appearance of the two hamsters was intact. Except for the more refined coating, no other traces of modification could be seen.

“Okay.” Zhong Chengshuo took off the magnifying glass, normally used to repair watches, from his right eye. “Regarding the conflict between you and me, this is my ‘answer’.”

Yin Ren dangled the hamster in a festive color scheme. Yellow Millet, who was on one side, quickly changed itself into the same golden-red color scheme, which looked extremely harmonious.

“This is?”

“Emergency positioning communicator.”

Zhong Chengshuo cleaned up the workbench like a tornado.

“We can check each other’s position at any time. If there is an emergency, just pull it off the phone, and the other side will receive an alarm.”

“The other side?” The former Celestial Master was stunned.

“It works both ways. If you encounter danger, you can call me at any time.” Zhong Chengshuo looked confused. “Is there a problem?”

“No.”

Yin Ren gripped the hamster so tightly that, incidentally, Yellow Millet became slightly deformed.

“I just like you a little bit more.”

Zhong Chengshuo’s hand stopped, causing the tools in his arms to click lightly as he stared at Yin Ren intently. The red that had just chilled down had a huge resurgence.

After a few moments, he hesitantly put away his tools and walked up to Yin Ren.

The positions of the two were reversed compared to when they were fighting at home. This time, Yin Ren was being circled in the torture chair and had to raise his head.

Zhong Chengshuo, with a solemn face, slowly lowered his head, inching his face closer. When he was about to touch Yin Ren, his movements stopped subtly for a second.

“Chu.”

He gently kissed the corner of Yin Ren’s mouth, with a few tentative pecks. The next moment, without waiting for Yin Ren to see his expression, Zhong Chengshuo instantaneously moved to the front of the refrigerator.

Yin Ren: “……”

Yin Ren rubbed his face. “I want a glass jar too. Do you have any more?”

Zhong Chengshuo generously gave him a specimen jar. Yin Ren tried his best to ignore the five-legged spider in the jar.

Two people were holding a glass jar as the air around them solidified for a few seconds.

“You didn’t bring me here just to change a keychain, right?” After all, this kind of thing could be done at home.

Yin Ren put down the cold jar and touched the corner of Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes. The latter narrowed his eyes in response and let Yin Ren’s fingertips slide over.

“Nn.”

Zhong Chengshuo took off his glasses.

“I want to, um, invite you to join my research. I have been studying this topic for more than ten years. Now it seems that it is also closely related to you.”

“What subject?” Yin Ren’s wings swept across Zhong Chengshuo’s calf, making a swishing sound, encouraging him to continue.

Zhong Chengshuo’s gaze moved along Yin Ren’s facial features. It brushed past his hair and stopped on the information wall that was full of red lines behind Yin Ren.

“Divine Descent,” he replied.

The author has something to say:

Let’s continue with the main storyline! …Actually, each arc is the main storyline _(:з”∠)_

They really are a stupid couple!

Xiao Yin: Hehe, isn’t it just dating? I have read 10,000 removed novels. I’m an elder and definitely won’t have any…

Xiao Yin: Thank you for the glass jar.

——Some trivia that no one cares about (?)——

Q: Why doesn’t Xiao Zhong put apples in the refrigerator?

A: Because apple juice has a longer shelf life than apples——

Evil As Humans Ch112

Chapter 112: Special Treatment

Yin Ren quickly went through all the conversations they had in his head. He had never taken a mortal imperial examination or test, but at this moment, Lord Ghost King fully tasted the tension of reviewing before an exam.

“I’m ready.” Yin Ren’s face was solemn.

Zhong Chengshuo: “Mm.”

He lowered his eyes, clasped his hands together, and his gaze slid along his knuckles. The taxi compartment slightly trembled. The driver was a bald and chubby man. With two remarkably good-looking people sitting in his back seat, he occasionally glanced at them through the rearview mirror.

But he definitely didn’t look as serious as Yin Ren did.

Before going out, Zhong Chengshuo had taken a shower. His black hair was clean and fluffy, and the taste of shampoo was refreshing and light, giving him the smell of a cool summer night.

On closer inspection, this person’s eyeballs didn’t protrude as commonly seen in myopic patients. Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes had a soft shape, and his eyelashes weren’t short, more similar to a certain type of herbivorous animal.

When Zhong Chengshuo finished saying “uncomfortable”, Yin Ren wanted to touch those eyes.

Unfortunately, Comrade Xiao Zhong fell into a long silence after sending out the announcement. The memories in Yin Ren’s head had been flipped over several times, and instead of alleviating his nervousness, his symptoms gradually deepened.

Was Zhong Chengshuo sulking, or did he decide to hang him dry, returning an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth?

Yin Ren thought that he was quite good at dealing with interpersonal relationships, and Zhong Chengshuo was a man without fancy. But at this moment, he couldn’t guess what Zhong Chengshuo was thinking.

Every unlucky guess took root in Yin Ren’s mind, and countless “bad endings” emerged. His brain didn’t seem to be his own, and Yin Ren wanted nothing more than to turn it off.

Thousands of years ago, he hadn’t thought about things in such a long-winded manner.

The children around him couldn’t keep up with him for too long. He taught them spells, and they taught him to read. If there was conflict… Well, he was a hundred-year-old man. How could he really be annoyed with children?

The officials at Huajisi who corresponded with him weren’t children.

However, their communication was only through ink and paper. The best was through a spirit device that conveyed sounds. The attitude on the other side was always cautious. Even if he encountered a difficult person who didn’t speak, for the sake of “smooth operation”, troublemakers would be replaced.

Communication with people was nothing more than skimming the surface of water for him. If they were destined to meet, they would; if not, they would part ways. Yin Ren had always been accustomed to moving forward and never looking back.

Not to mention the question of not looking back now, he almost didn’t even know how to move.

After the world perished in Yin Ren’s head 180 times, Zhong Chengshuo opened his mouth. “I have thought about it.”

Yin Ren: “……”

Only then did he realize that he hadn’t breathed for more than ten minutes.

“I can’t breathe well. My chest feels like cotton is being stuffed into it. It’s swollen and bloated.” Zhong Chengshuo truthfully described his feelings. “I tried to recall the samples that I managed to get a hold of several times, but I still couldn’t get excited and just wanted to lie down.

Yin Ren: “…Is it because I hardened my feathers just now?”

The taxi driver raised his puzzled eyes in the rearview mirror.

“No. The first time the symptoms appeared was when you said, ‘Even if we are just friends, I will be scared to death if you do this.’ Then when you said, ‘Who told me to be an elder?’ the symptoms became more serious.”

Yin Ren hissed and suddenly realized the problem with what he said. “I didn’t mean that…”

“Anyway, the symptom appeared, and I’m just describing the facts truthfully.”

Zhong Chengshuo had an expression of ‘I can’t do anything about it’.

“I have been thinking about it just now, and I’ve figured out the arguments to refute it.” Zhong Chengshuo turned his head and looked at the car window. “First, I’m your boyfriend, and I want more special treatment. Second, you have never been in love before, so we have the same starting point. I don’t like your ‘modesty’.”

After speaking, Zhong Chengshuo seemed to have realized something and chewed on the sentence “Don’t like…?” repeatedly.

The driver began to raise his eyes frantically in the rearview mirror again. The doubts in his eyes turned into intense curiosity.

Yin Ren exhaled slowly. He had the feeling that he had finally beheaded the tiger.

Although Zhong Chengshuo wasn’t in tune with the world, this person always knew how to identify the key points—whether it was an opponent or a human heart.

He understood. He understood, but…

Lord Ghost King’s gaze began to wander. He stared at the back of Zhong Chengshuo’s head, and his words got stuck in his mouth for a while.

Zhong Chengshuo’s rebuttal was like a heavy hammer, knocking open the walnut shell of Yin Ren’s “self-proclaimed elder”, revealing a little thoughtfulness that he had just noticed.

“I want more special treatment”…

Yin Ren groaned. He knew that he should show his open-mindedness and have an open conversation. Unfortunately, his hot face betrayed him now, making his throat cramp, and he couldn’t utter a word.

No, if he took into account the surroundings, his brain wouldn’t be enough.

Yin Ren pinched his hands, causing the driver’s vision to be blocked by illusions and seals. In the eyes of the driver, the two passengers in the backseat suddenly sat upright, expressionless, without any squinting eyes or anger.

The driver was so frightened that he hurriedly retracted his gaze.

Under the barrier of illusion, the real picture was a bit more frightening…

Without the driver’s inquisitive gaze, Yin Ren’s tense mood relaxed a little. The red cloth and wings fluttered and stretched out. He buried his face in the red cloth, and the wings at his feet uncomfortably curled up, brushing against Zhong Chengshuo’s ankle intermittently.

Zhong Chengshuo was waiting for a while for Yin Ren’s response. He twisted his head suspiciously and saw a certain Evil Spirit had shrunk into a ball.

It wasn’t quite the same as when Yin Ren was closed off to him. This time, the wings looked soft—so soft that they seemed to disappear in the next second.

It also had a suspicious tinge of red.

“I’m sorry.” There was a murmur from the depths of the red cloth.

Two pale arms peeked out from within the red cloth and held Zhong Chengshuo’s face.

Zhong Chengshuo’s glasses were pushed crookedly by Yin Ren’s palm. Behind the lenses, those black eyes blinked.

“Thinking of it this way, my bad parts are a bit like yours.” Yin Ren’s voice was a little low. “Anyway…”

In terms of performance and words, they just went to two extremes—Yin Ren had a caring attitude towards everyone, while Zhong Chengshuo evaluated everything and anyone with rationality.

He was indeed worried about Zhong Chengshuo, but there was also a considerable part of his unhappiness that wasn’t reasonable.

“Now I, ahem, I can tell you clearly. If a friend does something regardless of their own safety, I will definitely be angry too… but I won’t be as angry as if it were you.”

Yin Ren pressed his fingers on the other’s cheek and felt the warm and soft skin.

“But I don’t care how my friends see me or whether they worry about me.” The red color within the translucent wings grew stronger. “Can’t I just care about your attitude towards me?”

He cared that Zhong Chengshuo acted without saying anything; cared that he went into a dangerous place alone; and even cared that he didn’t show “caring” when he acted alone.

He just cared.

No wonder he understood the reasoning, but his anger remained stubborn. Like Zhong Chengshuo, he also wanted that “special treatment”.

Now Yin Ren realized that, when facing a young mortal, it was really… a bit embarrassing to say it out loud directly.

The problem was he chose the person who insisted on getting to the bottom of things, and there was no room for “that’s enough, we understand each other”—he had to speak his mind.

All the wings under Yin Ren’s feet curled up, scratching up the floor.

“I didn’t give in to you. I just didn’t know what to do,” he explained in a whisper. “You feel ‘angry’, which is very similar to why I was angry before… After all, we all feel that we’re ‘not special enough’.”

Zhong Chengshuo looked at him solemnly for a while, thinking for a long time.

“Nn, I agree.”

Yin Ren stretched out his two arms slowly, carefully lifting the red cloth in front of his face, and coughed dryly. “Then, in the future, you and I can give up some shame. I will also, uh, learn more from you.”

“But I don’t have any ‘shame’,” Zhong Chengshuo said puzzledly.

Yin Ren: “……” Uh, that’s pretty much what I meant.

“If you don’t mind, I can tell you all about my abnormalities.”

Yin Ren breathed out a sigh of relief. “Alright, I’ll take it all.”

“But I’m still uncomfortable. Is this ‘angry’?”

“Probably.” Yin Ren saw sweat on his forehead and felt the tendency to shrink back to the red cloth again.

“Obviously, we have initially solved the problem, so why am I still angry?” This person even took out a notebook and wrote a record, as if he wasn’t in a relationship with his lover but was bitten by a rare poisonous snake.

Yin Ren: “…I have an ancient recipe. When we arrive at our destination, I’ll treat it for you.”

“Nn.”

In the panicked expression of the taxi driver, the car stopped near the old town.

At this moment, it was around five in the evening. There was a faint yellow in the sun, and there was an endless stream of pedestrians walking around the old town. Most of them were the elderly wandering around. Unlike the streets of Gengsheng Town, all the elderly had smiles on their faces. The surrounding buildings were old, but they were well maintained, giving the old street a sense of vitality like a hundred-year-old tree.

Under one of the giant trees, there was a stall selling beef skewers.

“Since we were angry at each other this time, let’s AA for now.”

Zhong Chengshuo quietly gathered a strand of hair between his fingers. The soft hair happily rubbed against his knuckles, slowly relaxing.

“I have tried this shop before. Herbs are added to their soup, and the ingredients are also very good, so it’s really delicious,” Zhong Chengshuo commented pertinently. “It’s a suitable place to bring ‘friends’ to eat.”

You’re doing this on purpose, right? Yin Ren couldn’t laugh or cry.

Unexpectedly, this kid could hold a grudge.

Yin Ren deliberately squeezed Zhong Chengshuo’s palm and let out a long cry, “Then where do you want to take your boyfriend?”

Zhong Chengshuo stared at him for a long time.

“You’ll know in a while,” he said.

……

After a satisfying dinner, Zhong Chengshuo took him through the spider-web-like alley. When they reached their destination, Yin Ren instantly forgot the delicious taste in his mouth.

He had seen the space in front of him before—once in Guo Laifu’s memory.

Shelves full of specimens and steel barrels, windowless walls, and air that had the faint smell of medicine. The computer screen emitted a faint light, and next to it, he saw the strand of hair that Zhong Chengshuo had taken away.

Behind him, the basement door slammed shut, and the entire room was filled with inexplicable death, like a square tomb.

It turned out that this was the “suitable place to bring your boyfriend” in the concept of a science post. Lord Ghost King had never seen such a sight, and his heart was almost terrified.

Contrary, Zhong Chengshuo looked a bit excited.

“This is my secret research room in Haigu.” There was a weird shyness in his tone. “You can come here in the future too.”

“Ah, very good!”

The wall facing the entrance was covered with various newspaper clippings, photos, and handwritten texts. Red silk threads were connected in all directions, like a weird spider web. Yin Ren saw that he had occupied half the wall, and his heart started sweating profusely.

But… Did this mean that “King Yama”, surrounded by mysteries, had finally opened a corner of his heart to him?

Although the corner of his heart wasn’t particularly bright.

With a smile on his face, Zhong Chengshuo put the sample bags full of samples on the table. It was rare that he didn’t immediately deal with these “treasures” but stood in front of Yin Ren.

Yin Ren was still observing the “Evil Yin Ren observation data” that occupied half the wall in a daze and didn’t react for a while.

“It’s really nice here!” Yin Ren tried his best to sound sincere.

“It’s not about this.”

Zhong Chengshuo was standing upright.

“I have a little bit of ‘anger’ left, so you still have time to use that ‘ancient recipe’.”

Yin Ren stared at the person in front of him steadily. Zhong Chengshuo was standing in the middle of this dark space, like a ghost, commanding the area. This person knew that he was an Evil Spirit, and knew he was also the Great Celestial Master Zhong Yi, but his gaze wasn’t the same as when he first met him.

Zhong Chengshuo looked up at him intently. Curiosity was hidden in his dark eyes, and the excitement of “sharing secrets” on his face hadn’t dissipated.

“Alright.”

Yin Ren heard himself say.

Their petty fight needed an end.

And their new accomplice career may need a proper start.

Yin Ren brushed away a few strands of hair that were in the way, leaned forward, and gently kissed the corner of Zhong Chengshuo’s mouth.

……

At the same time, Fu Xingchuan’s mobile phone rang loudly.

“Hello?”

Minister Fu had the misfortune of just finding out about his “longevity” and was still in a trance. He even forgot to check to see who the caller was.

“Ah, what? National Special Operations Group joint exercise competition? Haigu isn’t available this year. We don’t have many new recruits here… Wait a minute.”

Fu Xingchuan showed a meaningful smile and looked a little less upright.

“Nothing, nothing. Pretend I didn’t say anything just now. Haa, Haigu haven’t participated for at least three years. This year’s C-level investigation team has really good seedlings, so we’ll definitely join.”

Ah, this is why I love Nian Zhong’s works. There’s no unnecessary drama or conflict, and when the couples do fight, it gets resolved through communication.

Chapter 19: City of the Dead

Ever since Zhu Rong perfected the player system, the Zhu family’s status had completely stabilized. After nearly three hundred years of recuperation, there had been, conservatively, at least ten generations of people. By the time of the previous Marshal Zhu, the relationship between several major families had become incredibly complex, and the Zhu family’s influence had reached its peak.

Thanks to his family background, Zhu Yanchen had been exposed to all sorts of shrewd people since he was young.

Although Shu Jun was intelligent, he wasn’t particularly slick. Zhu Yanchen saw that the other party was busy trying to change the topic and knew that Shu Jun didn’t want to go into detail. Considering their respective positions, Zhu Yanchen was able to guess the content of the “ordinary threat” that Shu Jun had mentioned.

There was no need to delve into it further at the moment.

“Let’s go east.” Zhu Yanchen allowed the topic to be led astray. “Do you know about X City?”

Shu Jun thought for a moment. “The one that was destroyed 200 years ago, right?”

“Mm. There is a border settlement to the southeast. We’ll go there to replenish some supplies, then head to X City.”

Zhu Yanchen was feeling a bit tired. Since his body had reached its limits, he had become increasingly fatigued. Shu Jun was right; perhaps he really did need more rest.

“Let’s go back to the cave first,” he said. “I’ll take a nap, and you can practice your swordsmanship…”

Shu Jun didn’t hide his frown. “Your voice sounds weak, and you don’t look comfortable.”

“I’m just a bit tired.”

“What cave? I’ll fly you over there. Missing sword practice for half a day won’t kill me.”

Shu Jun circled around Zhu Yanchen, and since he knew that this person only had two months left to live, he didn’t have the heart to hurt him. “Forget it, I’ll carry you. How far is it? I’ll try to fly steadily… Wait, don’t fall down yet! Give me a mask first. I look a bit conspicuous like this.”

Carrying a person on his back was something Shu Jun wasn’t used to. At the same time, he could feel the cold and stiffness coming from his back—after all, carrying a person who was slightly taller than oneself on one’s back should have at least provided some warmth.

Zhu Yanchen was really not feeling well. Shu Jun didn’t say anything, and with his greatsword hanging in front of him, he flew up into the air.

They didn’t talk along the way.

Marshal Zhu was quite resilient. Despite the strong wind, he slept soundly on his back. Shu Jun didn’t want to disturb the sick man, so when he saw a light below his feet, he gently landed and carried Zhu Yanchen towards the center of the settlement.

The border settlements were much simpler than the urban areas and larger than military bases. The people who came and went were all desperadoes searching for gold in the erosion zone, so they didn’t want to show their faces and garner extra attention. Given the place and purification was expensive, the environmental quality here was quite mediocre, but the accommodation was good enough. The market was lively, and it provided a good resting place.

When he was still a “player”, Shu Jun rarely came into contact with the settlements and had only heard some information before. Now that he thought about it, the United Government was probably worried that these desperadoes would talk too much and spread the truth, causing unnecessary trouble.

This was his first time entering a settlement.

Since it was a spontaneously organized base for people, the structure was easy to guess, so the best ones had to be in the center. However, Shu Jun wanted to keep a low profile, so he didn’t choose the best hotel. He had walked halfway, slipped to the side, and specifically picked one that was neither good nor bad. The boss was a big man with a bald head and a mask on his face. He had two black tumors the size of fists on both sides of his head, which looked a bit like panda ears at first glance.

Shu Jun: “… “It was hard not to be attracted by his appearance.

The big man had obviously noticed his gaze. “You new here?”

“Just arrived, just arrived. Keep your voice down,” Shu Jun had hurriedly said. “My friend is tired and sleeping. We’re looking for a place to rest. And you…?”

“The place is mine. You can call me Uncle Pan.” The big man stood up and patted his greasy apron. “How many rooms?”

“One room.” In various senses, he and Zhu Yanchen needed to take care of each other.

“Oh, do you want a cheaper one with bunk beds that can sleep six people, or a more expensive one for fun?”

“What do you mean?”

“For saving money, take the bunk bed room. It can hold up to six people and is cheap. As for how many people are staying there, that depends on your luck.” Uncle Pan had smacked his lips. “For those who are looking for fun, the rooms are naturally the best, suitable for relaxation, but the price is a little bit more expensive—”

“Then we’ll take the fun one.” Shu Jun didn’t bother to care about the ambiguous meanings. This was a necessity.

Anyway, Marshal Zhu was well prepared and was unlikely to drop the ball when it came to money.

“Oh, alright.” Uncle Pan took out the keys from the drawer and placed them gently on the iron counter. “I don’t provide food here, but you can give me some money for errands, and I can buy it for you, or you can buy it yourself. Just go out and turn two blocks to get to the market. Anyway, we can’t tell day from night here. There are always people around all day, so don’t worry about not being able to buy anything.”

“Thanks. Don’t worry, we’ll discuss it when my friend wakes up.” This area was already an erosion zone, so the food may not necessarily be clean. He could handle it, but he didn’t know if Zhu Yanchen could eat it.

But the room was nice.

There was a small purifier making a buzzing noise in the room, so the air was still okay. The floor was cleaned very well, and there was no strange smell on the sheets. Shu Jun locked the door and carefully laid down Zhu Yanchen. Then he put Monday beside the purifier and let it shiver.

As soon as Shu Jun changed his position, Zhu Yanchen woke up immediately. He looked around the room and felt a little dazed for a moment.

“Go back to sleep. It’s not even three in the morning, and you’ve only slept for a little over an hour. If you’re not at ease, you can lock me up with the handcuffs.” Shu Jun took off his mask and breathed a sigh of relief.

Zhu Yanchen looked a bit confused as he looked at him. Shu Jun didn’t waste any time and swiftly removed Zhu Yanchen’s mask, loosened his collar, and took off his coat—these things would only make it difficult for him to breathe.

“Take off your shoes yourself,” Shu Jun muttered while taking off his clothes. “It’s good not to be awake. Go to bed early and finish things early*. Then, I’ll argue with Monday.”

*(早睡早完事) (AKA Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.)

Zhu Yanchen hummed in response, indicating that he had just slept soundly and was still a bit groggy. He raised his head and gave Shu Jun a smile.

It was an extremely awkward smile. It was obvious that Marshal Zhu hadn’t smiled in a long time, and even when he was half awake, his smile was somewhat stiff. But seeing a smile appear on Zhu Yanchen’s face, Shu Jun was so frightened that he almost dropped the coat in his hand.

Perhaps realizing what he had done, Zhu Yanchen collected his smile the next second. He muttered a thank you, climbed into the bed, and laid down, even making sure to arrange his shoes neatly.

…Compared to the guys in his own team, Marshal Zhu was not only not delicate, but he was quite easy to take care of. Shu Jun was used to taking care of people, and he felt a little emotional for a moment. But he was startled by that smile, and his emotions quickly dissipated.

In the end, Zhu Yanchen didn’t handcuff him. Now that it was convenient without the handcuffs, Shu Jun took a shower, picked up Monday, who was trembling by the purifier, and sat down at the other end of the room.

He had intended to train Monday, but with time now available, he no longer had the mood to do so. That smile of Zhu Yanchen’s kept playing in his mind—it was a very nice smile, but that wasn’t the point.

Shu Jun’s intuition began to dance on his nerves again. He always felt that something wasn’t right.

Marshal Zhu… A’Yan was clearly not someone who smiled for no reason, even if they had been friends for a few years. When it came to the aborigines of this world, those who knew A’Yan longer than him must have passed away. However, whether it was watching the propaganda video, listening to the discussions of those who worshiped Marshal Zhu in his team, or seeing it with his own eyes, this person was always expressionless, like he had a face covered with glue that had dried up.

That was a relaxed smile, as if they were really close friends who could talk about anything.

Zhu Yanchen had been in the position of Marshal for a long time, commanding countless battles. He couldn’t be naive enough to be close based on a few years of texting… Was A’Yan really only hiding the “truth” and the “death date” from him?

The more Shu Jun thought about it, the more confused he became, and he hummed a few times in annoyance. He decided to go out for a few minutes to catch his breath.

Fortunately, he could now control the erosion a little bit. Shu Jun dug out a small piece from Monday, twisted it into a rope, and hung the door from the inside. Just in case, he also hung a “Do not disturb” sign outside as well.

“Are you going out? What about your friend?” Uncle Pan was still sitting in front of the counter leisurely listening to the radio.

“He’s resting in the room. I’m going to buy some food. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Shu Jun greeted him. Although it looked safe here, he didn’t want to leave Zhu Yanchen alone for too long.

“Oh, I just bought some pancakes for another room. I bought too many, do you want some?” Uncle Pan didn’t miss this opportunity to promote his business. “Lao Zhang’s pancakes are really something. I saw the last batch, and I bought them all. They’re not expensive, just give me 10% for the errand fee.”

As he spoke, he took out a pancake, pushed aside his mask, and started chewing. The room was suddenly filled with the smell of pancakes.

Shu Jun yielded. “Is the pancake clean?”

“Very clean. If you’re really worried, take it back and heat it up on the purifier—though that’s a waste of the purifier in your room.” Uncle Pan quickly ate a piece and put back on his crooked mask.

Zhu Yanchen hadn’t eaten anything decent these past few days, so buying him a few pancakes wouldn’t hurt. Shu Jun took six and instinctively put them in his pocket to keep them warm.

Uncle Pan exclaimed, “You’re quite good at taking care of people. Actually, I also have some soybean sauce for the pancakes…”

Shu Jun didn’t listen to what Uncle Pan was saying next.

He was good at taking care of people—from his teammates’ children to his injured teammates that many people had mentioned to him before so he had grown accustomed to it, not taking it to heart.

But now, he thought that his accustomed life had been turned upside down and every detail was worth rethinking—he had lived alone since he was eight years old and continued to live alone until he started working. So when did he start getting used to “taking care of others”?

For a moment, Shu Jun had a ridiculous idea: perhaps he and Marshal Zhu had known each other for a long time, but his memory had been buried deep in his mind. But then he remembered that he had been working with the Blackbirds since he entered <Erosion>. If he had any private contact with Zhu Yanchen, the timing didn’t match up.

Moreover, he seemed to have been good at taking care of people before entering <Erosion>.

…Well, maybe it was just one of his talents.

“I’ll take some sauce too.” Shu Jun took out the pancakes, pushed up his mask a bit, and ate mechanically.

“Where are you guys going?” Uncle Pan tossed him a bag of sauce that was wrapped in thin plastic like a tiny heart.

“East,” said Shu Jun vaguely.

“But that’s a heavily eroded area, and you guys don’t seem to be short of money. Why bother?” Uncle Pan took a deep breath. “Didn’t something happen there recently? Fewer ships are going there now, and the road isn’t easy to walk.”

“Something happened recently?” Shu Jun listened with interest. The events in X City were all 200 years old.

“Don’t you know? The higher-ups organized a ‘competition’ there a while ago, with a large Erosion Swamp as the target, but the captain of the Blackbirds was defeated.”

The Blackbirds captain himself: “…”

“But the most bizarre thing is this.” Uncle Pan’s tone gradually became more like a storyteller. “I’ll tell you, such a large Erosion Swamp disappeared right in front of everyone’s eyes! You know, like unplugging a bathtub—it just seeped into the ground. Who has ever seen such a situation like that before? Everyone’s saying something was wrong with the Erosion Swamp in the east.”

“So did they find it?” Shu Jun asked nervously; said Erosion Swamp was inside his body.

“Who has time to look for it when Marshal Zhu was suddenly kidnapped by a mutant beast shortly after that. The higher-ups are in chaos, and I heard that the old Marshal Zhu is furious.”

…Said Marshal Zhu is staying at your inn. Shu Jun almost choked on his pancake. “Let’s talk about the Erosion Swamp. After all, my brother and I have to make a living, and practical problems are the most important.”

“Oh.” Uncle Pan rubbed the black lump on his head. “The next piece of information will cost you money, young man. What do you say?”

Shu Jun gradually got used to this man’s routine. “You… Go ahead and tell me.”

“Dealing with sensible people is refreshing.” Uncle Pan rubbed his hands and chuckled.

“So the two of you are heading east. Someone died on the outskirts of the City of the Dead a while ago.”

“The City of the Dead?”

“X City!” Uncle Pan said. “Of course they didn’t go inside. That group of people just wandered around outside looking for some rare things to bring back to sell. And then, guess what? They found a monster corpse that had never been discovered before, which reportedly looked about 75% human.”

Shu Jun stopped chewing. “And then?”

“And then they were cursed by that monster’s corpse.” Uncle Pan lowered his voice. “Everyone died, and it was a terrible death. People found out by reading their diaries.”

“Young man, you can head east, but stay away from the City of the Dead. That place is evil.”
