Chapter 192: Answer

“Do you want to use that wooden talisman to send me to the Other Side?”

Yin Ren smiled, causing his brows and eyes to curve.

But beneath that smile, Zhong Chengshuo faintly sensed a warning. Although he wasn’t adept at social affairs, as King Yama of the Nightwalkers, Zhong Chengshuo was always sensitive to changes in “enemies”.

“I don’t think so.” Yin Ren’s smile grew even brighter. “You must have been too careless, right?”

The subtle warning became even more apparent.

Zhong Chengshuo slowly lowered his arms. “No, I really wanted you to touch the wooden talisman.”

“Oh, I remember. Before I took the medicine, I did let you create a control plan on your own… Zhong Ge, your plan can’t be that simple, right? Just a hug?”

Yin Ren took a half-step back, allowing his hair to slide casually on the wooden floor, leaving deep marks.

“This plan is really adorable. How could I not sense the Evil Force carried by the wooden talisman?”

“I still need to test it anyway. It seems that ‘Innocent Thoughts’ doesn’t have much impact on intelligence,” Zhong Chengshuo muttered. “It only affects thought patterns…”

“Well, I like this state. My mind is much clearer. It’s strange, though. Why did I resist that pill before?”

Seeing that Zhong Chengshuo stubbornly refused to wear his nightcap, Yin Ren concluded that he wouldn’t be going to sleep anytime soon. He simply sat on the sofa without blinking as he looked at Zhong Chengshuo.

“Since you’re so insistent on experimenting with that stuff, I’ll be straightforward. Until the situation is clear, I don’t want to take risks by testing the wooden talisman myself.”

“There’s still some stewed lamb soup left. Do you want to eat lamb noodles?” Zhong Chengshuo didn’t answer directly, keeping the wooden talisman hidden in his sleeve and pretending nothing happened.

Yin Ren’s expression stiffened for a few seconds, and his eyebrows furrowed. His blood-red eyes stared intensely at Zhong Chengshuo, but after a few seconds, he smiled as if nothing had happened.

“No, I won’t eat. Didn’t you say late-night eating is unhealthy? Then I won’t eat either.”

Yin Ren stretched lazily on the sofa, keeping the tablet and phone he used to watch shows far away from him, showing no intention of touching them.

In the dim light, through that familiar face, Zhong Chengshuo saw the past Yin Ren.

While he used to go to sleep early, Yin Ren liked to watch movies or TV dramas in the living room by himself. He wasn’t particular about his posture, often lying on the sofa in various positions, sometimes even upside down. When he had seen enough, Yin Ren would quietly climb into bed. Sometimes, even after getting into bed, he would still play with his phone quietly.

During his half-dream state, Zhong Chengshuo had once felt Yin Ren lean forward and gently kiss the top of his head, whispering a goodnight.

When they woke up the next day, they would always be close together, absorbing each other’s warmth.

Zhong Chengshuo used to think that it was the most ordinary state when they were together. But now, it felt so sweet and warm, yet so out of reach.

“…Then I’ll cook my own portion since you don’t want to test it yourself. I’ll have to come up with a new experimental plan.”

As Zhong Chengshuo said this, he didn’t look at Yin Ren.

He stood up, tied on an apron, and casually flicked off the broken line on the “Big Shot” as if jokingly, then plucked it off.

Yin Ren remained motionless, right where he was, but a clear hum escaped him, and his expression became even darker than before. Zhong Chengshuo, on the other hand, walked into the kitchen as usual and began simmering the leftover lamb soup from the previous night.

He simmered the soup on the lowest heat and heated a cup of milk for himself. Efficiently completing these tasks, Zhong Chengshuo returned to the table with a mug in hand. He held a book and a pen, lowered his head, and started reading an academic book on neuroscience.

Throughout, his gaze never turned towards Yin Ren, as if there was no one else in the room.

“Since there are arrangements, you can focus on your tasks first, and when you’re done, we’ll sleep together.”

Seeing that Zhong Chengshuo no longer responded, Yin Ren stopped smiling, and his tone carried a hint of suppressed anger.

Expressionless, he sat in his original spot, and his black hair climbed along the table. It carefully avoided the position of the wooden talisman and reached Zhong Chengshuo’s arm, then moved closer to his cheek. Zhong Chengshuo glanced sideways—the grape-sized crimson eyeballs at the tips of the hair were looking at him from multiple directions.

Still, Zhong Chengshuo remained silent. He clenched his fist cautiously, his palm sweating.

The delicious aroma of the lamb soup wafted from the pot. In the past, Yin Ren would have already rushed to the kitchen to steal a taste. But now, Yin Ren remained firmly seated on the sofa, showing no intention of standing up.

The crimson eyeballs at the tips of his hair seemed alive. They dragged their nerve-like dark hair, floating near Zhong Chengshuo’s hand. Whenever Zhong Chengshuo lifted his pen, several eyeballs would roll over and brush against the back of his hand.

Cold and wet; the sensation was akin to touching an ice cube dipped in water.

For a moment, the atmosphere indoors felt less like a “home” and more like a battlefield filled with ominous energy.

The usual scene of one person drinking milk and reading a book at the table while the other snacked on the sofa and watched shows had lost its casual atmosphere. The occasional small talk seemed to have vanished without a trace.

Zhong Chengshuo had never experienced such an uncomfortable silence before.

“I don’t want to be bothered by those trivial matters of the Other Side anymore. If those Elementals continue to cause trouble, we might as well move away from Haigu.”

Yin Ren seemed to dislike the silence as well, and he was the first to break it.

As soon as he spoke, dozens of eyeballs suddenly approached Zhong Chengshuo, almost reaching his face, and the connecting hairs at the tips of the eyeballs stood stiff. Zhong Chengshuo wondered if these eyeballs would try to enter his mouth if he didn’t respond.

“I still have the wish to ‘protect the descendants of those children’, and that wish has no limits. As I understand it, the descendants of those descendants children are included,” he said, clearing his throat, his tone devoid of emotion.

“You’re so stubborn. If I revoke the wish, then it’s fine.” Yin Ren played with his long hair.

Zhong Chengshuo’s response wasn’t unexpected. He silently turned a page and continued to plan his next move in his mind.

“What about the answer?”

For a moment, Zhong Chengshuo didn’t react. “What?”

When he looked up again, Yin Ren had already flashed to the opposite side. His black hair cascaded to the floor, like flowing shadows. A pair of crimson eyes brimmed with amusement sent shivers down one’s spine.

The tips of the hair scratched against the floor, emitting an uncomfortable and sharp sound.

“I said I can revoke the wish, but you haven’t answered me.” Yin Ren rested his cheek on his hand. “Zhong Ge, what’s your answer?”

“…I don’t want to discuss this matter for now.”

After saying that, Zhong Chengshuo took a sip of milk and made a few more notes in his book with the pen.

“That won’t do. Weren’t we always so in sync?”

A few strands of hair wrapped around the pen, forcibly stopping Zhong Chengshuo’s movements. The crimson eyeballs slid along Zhong Chengshuo’s skin, lightly brushing against his Adam’s apple.

“Since just now, you’ve been ignoring me. Well, let’s do this: you must answer immediately to everything I say.”

The air in the room became increasingly heavy, and the feeling of oppression was suffocating. There was no hint of killing intent in the pressure, but it still rendered one immobile. Even during the days when they had just met, there was never such a tense atmosphere.

Zhong Chengshuo stared at Yin Ren intently.

Back then, he had split half of his power with Yin Ren. As he fused into a human body, his aura “disappeared”. The power took root and merged within Yin Ren’s body, giving birth to a brand new and formidable Primordial Elemental.

He had lost half of his power, and even if he could recover it, Yin Ren, who had received that half of his power, would also grow.

…Grow into a stronger, more exceptional new generation; growing into the very enemy that should swallow him—the most dangerous one.

For the first time, Zhong Chengshuo vividly realized how bloody their relationship should have been.

Crackle!

Before his thoughts had finished processing, the book in Zhong Chengshuo’s hand burst into flames without any external source. Dark flames surged three meters high, instantly turning the pages into ashes. The black flames licked Zhong Chengshuo’s fingertips, colder than ice and snow.

“You still haven’t answered my question.” Yin Ren leisurely formed hand seals with his fingers.

Zhong Chengshuo exhaled slowly. “That was my book.”

“I can see that. It’s not like it’s some rare edition. Anyway, I’ll buy you a couple more tomorrow—who told you to ignore me just now?” Yin Ren’s tone was as gentle as before, but it carried a hint of grievance. “Zhong Ge, are you angry?”

Zhong Chengshuo touched the ashes on the table, leaving distinct marks with his fingertips. He sighed, finished the now cold milk in his cup, and briskly stood up.

The cup was placed back on the table, producing a faint but distinct sound of impact.

In the next moment, Zhong Chengshuo felt a slight constriction on his limbs, neither light nor heavy. “Zhong Ge, you still haven’t answered me… Are you angry?”

“Are you angry?”

The strands of hair transformed into the familiar texture of wings in Zhong Chengshuo’s perception. They were warm and soft as usual, but quickly bound his limbs, rendering him immobile.

Those soft strands of hair slipped into Zhong Chengshuo’s pajamas, gliding against his skin. Yin Ren’s tone was gentle, like usual, and Zhong Chengshuo momentarily struggled to determine whether Yin Ren was angry or acting spoiled.

Yin Ren took a step closer, and the oppressive atmosphere in the room felt like an unfrozen swamp in winter. The lush green plants in the living room quickly withered and turned black; their shriveled leaves covered in a layer of frost. With a snap, the warm glow of the ceiling lamp suddenly burst, plunging the room into darkness.

Moonlight spilled through the window, casting everything in the room into shadows. Zhong Chengshuo stared directly into those familiar crimson eyes, and in the darkness, those eyes resembled two drops of blood.

Zhong Chengshuo moved his lips, but ultimately didn’t utter a single word.

Once or twice could be attributed to carelessness or unintentional actions, but Zhong Chengshuo was sure that the current behavior was undoubtedly deliberate. This was the first time they experienced a cold war, and Yin Ren’s expression became extremely unpleasant to look at.

He took two steps forward, placing his palm on Zhong Chengshuo’s chest, which was scorching hot. The strands of hair crawled on Zhong Chengshuo’s body like serpents, entwining more tightly.

Zhong Chengshuo slowly lowered his gaze. His right hand, hiding the wooden talisman, subtly accumulated power. In the next instant, he struggled to break free from the entangling hair, swinging his hand towards Yin Ren. This time, Zhong Chengshuo’s speed was extremely fast, using all his strength. Yin Ren didn’t have time to react, and the strands of hair left bloody marks on Zhong Chengshuo’s arm.

Under the moonlight, blood splattered.

However, his speed was ultimately no match for Yin Ren, who was the “Ghost King”. Yin Ren’s hair turned into whips, lashing fiercely at Zhong Chengshuo’s right wrist. Stimulated by the attack, Zhong Chengshuo’s grip loosened. A blurry and faint shadow flew out of his palm, making a light tapping sound as it landed in the gap behind the sofa.

The black hair directly restrained Zhong Chengshuo’s wrist, forcing him to open his five fingers, revealing the blood-stained palm.

“So that’s how it is.”

Yin Ren’s fingertips brushed over the fine wounds in Zhong Chengshuo’s palm while their chests pressed together. They were of similar height, and now their breaths intertwined, carrying a sweet and bloody scent.

“When you went to the kitchen just now, you cut your palm to stain the wooden talisman with blood. After weakening its aura, you planned to take advantage of the situation and attack me… Zhong Ge, I’m so disappointed.”

Yin Ren’s tone was soft, as he lifted his bloodstained fingertips and brushed them over Zhong Chengshuo’s lips. Yin Ren’s fingertips were scorching hot like embers, and the blood on them became stickier as they moved away from the wound. Zhong Chengshuo instinctively closed his lips, and the strong scent of blood instantly filled his mouth.

It was his own blood.

“Since you want to deal with me, I thought you would come up with more interesting moves.”

As Zhong Chengshuo turned his head in response to Yin Ren’s words, Yin Ren’s fingertips made another shallow cut on the corner of his lips, leaving a trace of blood.

“For Advanced Primordial Elementals like us, they seem to assume that the new ones should consume the old ones, right? It’s rare that our relationship is stable, so please don’t ruin this hard-won peace, okay?”

Yin Ren’s last sentence was almost a whisper, like murmuring in a dream.

Zhong Chengshuo was like a butterfly caught in a spider’s web, being entangled by thread after thread. Yin Ren leaned closer, lightly biting Zhong Chengshuo’s earlobe with his teeth.

Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes moved like dry ink. His breathing was steady, and he remained silent as usual.

Yin Ren sighed softly, using a bit more force with his teeth. Crimson droplets of blood seeped from the soft earlobe, coiling into Yin Ren’s mouth. The taste of fresh blood made Yin Ren’s heartbeat suddenly accelerate. Through the thin fabric, Zhong Chengshuo could even feel the pounding of his heart.

Maintaining their close proximity, with sticky strands of hair, Yin Ren pressed his fingers gently against Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes, then moved along his nose bridge, lightly gliding over his lips.

Pausing at the bloodstained lips for a moment, his fingertips slowly continued to move towards Zhong Chengshuo’s throat.

“I don’t like my previous self. There were too many distractions, and I overlooked the most precious thing to me.”

At some point, two additional arms appeared on Yin Ren’s body, emerging from under his ribs and encircling Zhong Chengshuo’s waist ethereally.

“I’ve never been this clear-minded before. Maybe I was too indulgent and lazy in the past, but it’s okay if you don’t like my current state. Given time, you’ll get used to it.”

Yin Ren slowed his breathing, pressing a kiss with a mix of blood and sweetness onto Zhong Chengshuo’s lips. Then, another strand of hair wrapped around Zhong Chengshuo’s throat, directly enclosing it.

“How does the pressure feel? Isn’t it uncomfortable?” Yin Ren touched the point where flesh and hair met, as if caressing the most fragile silk. “I just don’t like it when you’re silent like this… This won’t do, Zhong Ge. If there’s any problem, you have to speak up for it to be resolved.”

With each word Yin Ren spoke, the strand of hair around Zhong Chengshuo’s throat tightened a bit more.

But Zhong Chengshuo remained silent.

Yin Ren’s pupils contracted. Zhong Chengshuo instinctively tensed his muscles, but the restraint around his neck didn’t tighten. In the next moment, the earth shook, and all the hair on Zhong Chengshuo’s body straightened, propelling him instantly a half step away from Yin Ren.

The closeness between the two disappeared, replaced by a half-step distance, allowing a clearer view of each other.

Zhong Chengshuo’s Adam’s apple slid as he voluntarily raised his head, meeting Yin Ren’s gaze. His heart thumped against his ribcage, and there was no sign of retreat in his eyes.

Zhong Chengshuo seemed to have turned into a true flesh puppet, completely sealed off, determined to defy Yin Ren’s demand for an answer.

The crimson light gradually intensified in Yin Ren’s eyes as the strands of hair wound tighter and deeper into Zhong Chengshuo’s flesh.

His limbs were imprisoned, making it difficult to maintain balance. Zhong Chengshuo simply straightened his back and unexpectedly bumped into the table. The table legs moved slightly, emitting a faint scraping sound.

Countless strands of hair crawled on his body like creeping vines, disheveling his once neat pajamas. The cold breeze passed over his exposed skin, and the delicate and warm entanglement made his head spin. Zhong Chengshuo couldn’t stay still, but as soon as he moved, his shirt almost slipped off.

Zhong Chengshuo had a tight and firm physique, with fair skin. In the moonlight, contrasted by the pitch-black hair and those lifeless eyes, his presence was as sharp as a blade, making people hold their breath.

Sensations continuously traveled through the strands of hair. This strange and powerful person was firmly held in his grasp, yet his skin felt so warm.

Yin Ren couldn’t help but move closer. This time, he didn’t act recklessly; instead, he cradled Zhong Chengshuo’s face with both hands. Zhong Chengshuo remained silent, but his eyes followed Yin Ren’s every movement, exuding the only hint of vitality.

“Do you know, I really like you.”

Yin Ren sighed softly. He gazed at those familiar eyes and affectionately brushed his fingertip over the corner of Zhong Chengshuo’s eyes.

“Having lived in the mortal world for hundreds of years, I thought I understood the ways of the world. But watching from the sidelines is completely different from experiencing it firsthand, being consumed by the flames. Before, I used to think it would be better if you weren’t a mortal… Then we could stay together for a long time, whether in peace or conflict, it would still be better than being rootless and adrift.”

“But now, I no longer think that way.”

Yin Ren lowered his hand and, through the strands of hair, caressed the spot where Zhong Chengshuo’s heart was. His extra pair of hands still rested on Zhong Chengshuo’s waist, and his beautiful face was now filled with a sinister air, almost devoid of Yin Ren’s original “human” aura.

“Now, I want you to be a mortal. I want to witness your life, your death. Your entire life held in my hands—wouldn’t that be wonderful?”

Yin Ren rested his head on Zhong Chengshuo’s shoulder. His action resembled that of an affectionate beast intertwining with its mate.

“Now, I am following my instincts by consuming you. It can be seen as fate, merging our blood and bones… But if I consume you, you won’t be able to speak to me anymore. Thinking about that, I hesitate.”

His lips pressed tightly against Zhong Chengshuo’s neck; his scorching breath touched the skin with each exhale, while his idle hand slowly brushed over Zhong Chengshuo’s chest and abdomen.

“But then again, I thought, if you never speak to me, it wouldn’t be any different from being consumed by me.” Yin Ren’s voice carried a cold, chilling smile. “Wouldn’t you agree, Zhong Ge?”

Once again, a horrifying silence fell over the living room.

“…Forget it, forget it.”

Yin Ren muttered. For a brief moment, Zhong Chengshuo even thought that this person had returned to normal.

“After all, I just ate the ‘Innocent Thoughts’ not long ago, so it’s only natural that you’re not accustomed and want to show some defiance. As long as you’re willing to make a sound today, I won’t eat you—”

Yin Ren released his grip on Zhong Chengshuo’s waist and abdomen, returning to his usual human form. He made a casual gesture, causing Zhong Chengshuo to stumble and fall onto the sofa, pulled by the strands of hair.

This time, Zhong Chengshuo didn’t hide his anger on his face. His mouth was tightly pursed, and his breathing became rapid.

Yin Ren remained calm and unaffected, while the strands of hair gently moved around Zhong Chengshuo. The eyeballs at the end of the hair transformed into familiar wings and flowed down to the ground.

Yin Ren approached as usual, embracing his stiff lover tightly. His fingers slipped into the gaps between the hair and skin, feeling the tension in the other’s muscles. He then commanded the hair to relax, capturing Zhong Chengshuo’s injured right hand and biting down on his fingertips.

His tongue was scorching hot as it lightly swept over the bloodstained fingers.

“I remember very clearly. Your finger bones are quite beautiful,” Yin Ren said softly. “If it doesn’t work out, I can keep a small part as a memento. Do you think it would be better as a ring or a necklace…?”

Before he finished speaking, Yin Ren suddenly chuckled.

“Ah, I thought you were really angry with me tonight. At least it would require some effort from me.”

Above their skin, Yin Ren’s hair and ten fingers moved together. His tone became much more relaxed, with a hint of cunning satisfaction.

“Zhong Ge, you seem quite interested after all.”

Yin Ren’s face was covered in shadows, leaving only his joyful, blood-red eyes. The aura of the Ghost King was entwined with desire, smelling like bone-chilling syrup. Zhong Chengshuo’s breathing became slightly more rapid.

Yin Ren leaned down, lazily resting on Zhong Chengshuo’s chest, and once again bit down on his lover’s knuckles. “How about we make a bet? Let’s bet on when you will make a sound for me—as for me, it will be before dawn.”

After saying that, he bit Zhong Chengshuo’s neck. Zhong Chengshuo groaned softly, feeling a burning pain on his neck.

Previously, Yin Ren liked to lightly bite, but this time his strength was terrifying. The skin was pierced instantly, and fresh blood gushed out. If this person hadn’t held back his strength, Zhong Chengshuo had no doubt that Yin Ren would have torn off that piece of skin without hesitation.

Zhong Chengshuo didn’t have time to react before the strands of hair on his limbs suddenly tightened, firmly securing him to the sofa.

“Oh, by the way, the wooden talisman is still nearby. Can’t have you picking it up,” Yin Ren said nonchalantly.

A few strands of hair wrapped around Zhong Chengshuo’s wrist, functioning like handcuffs, and also entangled Yin Ren’s wrist. Even if Zhong Chengshuo gained his freedom, he couldn’t move freely.

“As an extra precaution, I’m sure you can understand.” Yin Ren licked the blood off his teeth. “This way, there won’t be any problems.”

After saying that, he touched Zhong Chengshuo’s lips and sat down.

Zhong Chengshuo had experienced the stimulation of human desires before, but he had never mixed it with fear and oppression. Poison gas mixed with fragrant flowers, poisoned wine with excessive sugar. Various stimulations brewed into a strong acid, surging through his veins, corroding his heart with a hissing sound.

Every muscle in Zhong Chengshuo’s body tightened, and his entire nervous system trembled. He couldn’t help but lower his gaze, staring at his madly possessive lover.

Amidst the intense entanglement, Lord Ghost King’s eyes were half-closed, and his scorching gaze remained glued to the edge of Zhong Chengshuo’s lips. His hands lightly caressed Zhong Chengshuo’s chest, and a strand of hair consistently and steadily tightened around Zhong Chengshuo’s throat.

The sofa emitted regular vibrations from the weight, and Zhong Chengshuo’s fingers clenched and released, revealing a noticeable redness due to the restraints. Warm sweat mixed with a little blood flowed over the skin, blending into a shimmering light red. The pale red liquid seeped into Yin Ren’s black hair, eventually staining the soft sofa fabric.

Zhong Chengshuo couldn’t sense evil qi in the room, but he could feel the turbulent airflow stirred up by Evil Force. The withered green plants trembled incessantly, and the dried-up leaves fell lightly, making a soft sound.

He had never stepped into such a frenzy of sensations before, and for a moment, Zhong Chengshuo almost lost his sanity.

Only the clock in the living room dutifully continued to tick.

An hour passed, with bloodstains dotting the sofa and writhing clusters of wings scattered on the floor.

“I like you.” Yin Ren gasped, his scorching breath carrying a strong smell of blood.

He kissed Zhong Chengshuo’s lips, but the other’s mouth remained shut like a clam, showing no signs of cooperation.

“…I like you.” Despite this, Yin Ren repeated with a smile.

Two hours passed, and the moonlight was shrouded by dark clouds, leaving the interior nearly pitch-black. The two of them fell to the floor, knocking the coffee table askew. Yin Ren held Zhong Chengshuo tightly, like a drowning person clinging to the last piece of driftwood within their field of vision.

“I like you.”

Yin Ren’s fingertips brushed against the taut strands of hair, as if a musician were caressing the strings of a violin. At the end of the hair strands, Zhong Chengshuo’s hand intertwined with Yin Ren’s other hand, and his nails dug deeply into the other’s flesh.

“Answer me, please…”

Zhong Chengshuo remained silent, turning his head away.

……

In the late night, the crescent moon finally emerged from behind the dark clouds.

After a while, Yin Ren stopped demanding an answer. He only murmured vague words of love while his body trembled as he left bloody bite marks on Zhong Chengshuo’s body.

Zhong Chengshuo’s hands, bound by the hair, had already loosened slightly, no longer tightly clenched. His wrists were still tied to Yin Ren’s, restricting his freedom of movement.

“I can’t see through you, but I like the enigmatic you… If only you were a mortal, I could protect you as I pleased… But why do you treat me like this…”

There was no oppression, no hostility. In the faint scent of blood, Yin Ren’s whispers carried genuine sadness and confusion.

His fingertips swept over the oozing wounds, and in the pale moonlight, his eyes glistened with a hint of moisture.

“I like you. You must have noticed… Why did things have to escalate like this over a few mortals you don’t care about? I can’t understand…”

As another biting episode ended. Zhong Chengshuo could suddenly move his arm.

One moment, Yin Ren was immersed in his words of love. The next moment, he froze like a vigilant beast, immediately halting his actions.

In the unbearable stillness, Zhong Chengshuo stretched out his arm and lightly touched Yin Ren’s lips, then gently tapped his own.

His eyes remained dull, but there was a hint of helplessness and tenderness in Zhong Chengshuo’s expression. He didn’t even glance at the sofa where the wooden talisman was, instead, he focused his full attention on Yin Ren.

“Well, it seems like I’m going to win.” Yin Ren’s tone suddenly became cheerful, as if he had won a small game.

He leaned down once again, kissing Zhong Chengshuo’s lips.

With the smile of a victorious person, he licked the remaining bloodstained lips. Zhong Chengshuo didn’t tightly seal his lips this time. Instead, he tentatively extended his hand and held the back of Yin Ren’s head.

Yin Ren eagerly deepened the kiss, and Zhong Chengshuo tilted his head in response, cooperating with his lover’s movements. Yin Ren’s tongue ventured forward, but instead of encountering hard teeth or a soft tongue, it touched a warm, moist wooden object.

As soon as Zhong Chengshuo’s lips parted, a chilling and fierce power burst out from between his teeth.

It was the wooden rabbit talisman.

“Ugh!!!”

Yin Ren tried to dodge, but his head was forcefully held down by Zhong Chengshuo. The wooden rabbit talisman was pushed by Zhong Chengshuo’s tongue into Yin Ren’s mouth. Yin Ren’s hair stood on end—upon contact with the wooden talisman, the surroundings instantly became distorted and blurred, as if a liquid was constantly surging.

No, I’m disappearing!

In this crisis, Yin Ren had no time to think about whether he liked this state or not. He immediately released the spell of the “Innocent Thoughts”. As expected, as if the fog had dispersed, the familiar living room returned to normal clarity.

Yin Ren felt a moment of confusion, then met Zhong Chengshuo’s complex gaze.

Yin Ren: “…………”

Zhong Chengshuo: “…………”

Zhong Chengshuo watched as the expression in his lover’s eyes changed from confusion to horror, and then to explosive embarrassment. Yin Ren’s face turned almost the same color as his eyes, and he immediately gathered up his scattered hair, wanting to awkwardly get up—however, given their current intimate position, this movement was quite difficult.

So Zhong Chengshuo kindly reached out his hand and pressed down on Yin Ren, who wanted to slip away.

Yin Ren immediately made a muffled sound, and his mouth opened and closed repeatedly. His body trembled slightly, and his face seemed to change like a kaleidoscope.

“This is… seduction!”

The dignified Lord Ghost King had long lost his previous air of dominance. He tried to take the initiative, but his confidence was clearly hollow.

“Zhong Chengshuo, how could your control plan be so… so—”

He couldn’t continue speaking.

“We are accomplices, and I had to choose a method you absolutely couldn’t anticipate.”

Zhong Chengshuo’s limbs had already regained their freedom, and his palm slid over the strands of hair soaked with sweat. The clusters of wings stiffened for a moment and then shrank into a ball. However, someone with a vengeful mindset held onto one of the clusters, kneading it gently.

“Well, umm…” Yin Ren sniffed and slowly pried Zhong Chengshuo’s hand away. “The experiment went quite smoothly, so let’s stop here… Uh!”

Zhong Chengshuo readily released the cluster of wing balls, but his hand returned to Yin Ren’s body.

“Well, um, the thing that I knocked away just now… um…”

“You can find out for yourself.”

Amidst the jolting, a strand of black hair wiggled and poked into the depths of the sofa. After a few minutes, it trembled as it hooked out a blood-stained pen cap. Looking at the table, there was still a pen lying on the surface—the very pen that Zhong Chengshuo had used for annotations just now.

Yin Ren’s mind had long been free from the distractions of uncontrollable affection, and he instantly understood this person’s intentions—

Zhong Chengshuo deliberately reduced communication and “sealed” the wooden talisman in his mouth. Then he used blood to stain the pen cap, impersonating the wooden talisman, and pretended to entice Yin Ren to knock it away.

Finally, all Zhong Chengshuo needed was to request a kiss in an atmosphere that wouldn’t arouse suspicion.

For the lightning-fast King Yama, even the magic tricks of mortals were no different from spells in his hands.

Truly cunning.

The entanglement was not yet over. In his gradually fading consciousness, Yin Ren made an effort to lower his body, burying his burning face in the nape of Zhong Chengshuo’s neck.

……

As the clock approached five in the morning, the two of them squeezed into Zhong Chengshuo’s bathtub. Yin Ren had half of his face submerged in the water, blowing bubbles with a melancholic expression.

“Are you sure you’re a Primordial Elemental and not a rabbit monster?” Yin Ren suddenly emerged from the water with a stern face. “Stop laughing. You’re just reveling in my misfortune.”

Zhong Chengshuo pointed to the numerous bite marks all over his body.

Yin Ren immediately deflated like a balloon, making a couple of deflated sounds as he gently touched the scabbing wounds. “I’m sorry. I’ll help you apply medicine later.”

“It’s okay. The wounds are shallow.” Zhong Chengshuo pinched a strand of Yin Ren’s hair—at the end of the hair, a small, withered wing hung limply, making it difficult to tell whether it was pretending to be lifeless or not.

“I… Even though I asked you to prepare in advance, to be honest, I didn’t expect it to turn out like that.”

Yin Ren hung his head in dejection; his entire being turned into the color of a thoroughly cooked crab, as if steam would come out from the top of his head.

“I thought that as long as I liked you so much, nothing bad would happen. That state was truly terrifying, like losing my mind and becoming fanatical.”

It was only because Zhong Chengshuo wasn’t affected by memory spells. Otherwise, Yin Ren would have wanted to erase all memories of tonight—regardless of whether they were in Zhong Chengshuo’s mind or his own.

Lord Ghost King was embarrassed to the point of wanting to dig a three-foot hole and sleep for another thousand years.

However, Zhong Chengshuo just calmly looked over, absentmindedly rubbing the little wing between his fingers. That pitiful soft wing trembled and almost dissolved into a squishy liquid.

“At least the experiment was successful, and our hypothesis was correct. The missing people are all of the type who rely on ‘love’ as their life support. Once it’s daylight, we’ll synchronize our findings. Maybe we can find a stable method to enter the Other Side.”

Zhong Chengshuo analyzed seriously while piling a ball of foam on top of Yin Ren’s head.

“For now, I don’t want to discuss this. We’ll talk about it tomorrow, for real this time,” Yin Ren weakly stated. “I won’t touch that thing even if you beat me to death next time. What kind of rotten idea did Hu Tao come up with…”

“It’s already ‘tomorrow’,” Zhong Chengshuo pointed out mercilessly.

This time, Yin Ren submerged his entire head underwater, exhaling bubbles filled with despair.

“Yin Ren.” Zhong Chengshuo continued observing Yin Ren as he continued to blow bubbles underwater and called out to him.

Yin Ren pretended not to hear and remained submerged, shutting himself off from the world.

“Yin Ren, come out. I have something to tell you,” Zhong Chengshuo urged.

Yin Ren finally resurfaced; his entire body was still pink from the water. When he spoke, there was a sense of resignation in his voice. “…Go ahead, tell me.”

“To be honest, I’ve been thinking today that maybe I don’t like you as much as I thought.” Zhong Chengshuo pushed aside the wet hair on Yin Ren’s face; his eyes still resembled two dry wells.

The pink hue on Yin Ren’s skin immediately faded, and he froze in place, gradually turning pale.

“But tonight, I realized that I actually like you more than I imagined,” Zhong Chengshuo continued, enunciating each word distinctly.

Then he opened his arms and, without waiting for Yin Ren’s reaction, embraced him. Their skins pressed against each other, and the water temperature was just right. Yin Ren was stunned for a few seconds before tightening his embrace.

“You did it on purpose,” he said, encircling Zhong Chengshuo’s neck and gently biting his ear.

This time, Yin Ren left only a faint mark.

A warm atmosphere filled the air once again, bringing a comforting tranquility. In this reassuring sense of fulfillment, Zhong Chengshuo closed his eyes.

“You won,” Zhong Chengshuo whispered softly. “You bet that I would make a sound for you before dawn, and you won.”

“…Please, spare me, Zhong Ge. I’m begging you, don’t bring that up again,” Yin Ren pleaded, pressing his forehead against Zhong Chengshuo’s, feeling utterly embarrassed. He even submerged himself completely in the water again.

Zhong Chengshuo leaned against Yin Ren’s forehead, unable to contain his laughter any longer. The latter, filled with both anger and humiliation, lowered himself, allowing the water to completely submerge him.

Watching Yin Ren’s powerless and wriggling hair, Zhong Chengshuo closed his eyes.

He still remembered the scene when he first obtained the pill.

After receiving the clues provided by Hu Tao, he immediately searched for information. “Innocent Thoughts” was a metaphysical prescription that had emerged in recent years. It could make people lose their sanity, lose interest in food and drink, and fill their minds with adoration for the target. This thing wasn’t really popular. According to the seller, most buyers were infatuated men and women who used this medication for revenge. There were also a few “black widows” and “black widowers” who used it to control wealthy elderly people.

Thinking about it, there were no normal couples in love buying these things.

Zhong Chengshuo, in fact, found this somewhat perplexing.

Experiencing a very pure emotion firsthand, wasn’t it a good thing? If it weren’t for him being unaffected by these metaphysical items, Zhong Chengshuo would have loved to experience that feeling of “pure love” himself.

At that moment, the two of them were flying in the air. Zhong Chengshuo looked at Yin Ren’s face. In the next moment, Yin Ren seemed to sense his gaze and playfully narrowed his eyes at him.

However, Zhong Chengshuo’s mood wasn’t as relaxed as it seemed.

He did care about Yin Ren. When they were apart, he would worry, and when they were together, he would long to touch him. Being together made his emotions lighter and brighter than before.

But it was only limited to that.

Compared to the probing and underlying currents before they got together, now that they were truly sharing their lives and meals; seemingly everything was somewhat mundane. Especially since Yin Ren was skilled in navigating social interactions and had a sense of propriety, they rarely had sharp conflicts.

Zhong Chengshuo was certain that he liked Yin Ren a lot.

He was the first person Zhong Chengshuo reached out to in the vast emptiness; the first of his kind that he encountered during these lonely years in the mortal realm.

But was his liking a genuine expression of love, or had he mistaken their prolonged intimacy as adoration?

He couldn’t feel the fervent love described in those narratives. Previously, Zhong Chengshuo claimed not to care about these “meaningless” details, but recently, with the unrest in the outside world, he couldn’t stop his thoughts.

“Zhong Chengshuo, why do I feel like you’re somewhat enjoying this situation?” Yin Ren had asked when he was about to take the pill.

At that time, Zhong Chengshuo didn’t answer Yin Ren.

In truth, he wasn’t enjoying it, but rather, he had a slight desire to try it. “Innocent Thoughts” wouldn’t blindly stimulate love but rather remove other emotions and purify the purest feelings. Only then would everything become clear. With a definite result, he wouldn’t have to worry so much.

Yin Ren was different from him. He firmly believed that he would be affected by uncontrollable love, but he had no concerns about the nature of their own relationship.

How did Yin Ren determine what “like” meant?

As for himself? Would he be like he was a thousand years ago, merely assuming an innocent facade and using that person to achieve his own goals? …If Yin Ren were to be replaced by another strong and compatible person, would he also “fall in love” with them?

Now he had an answer.

Uncontrolled Yin Ren was just as strong and acted in harmony with him. If Zhong Chengshuo wanted, he could also calmly cooperate with Yin Ren. However, as he looked at Yin Ren in that state, his heart was filled with a hollow emptiness and an indescribable sadness.

Zhong Chengshuo gently tousled Yin Ren’s hair.

“How about having lamb rice noodles?”

“Yes!” Yin Ren immediately resurfaced from the water and instinctively exclaimed, only to realize afterward. “Wait, didn’t you only cook one serving?”

“I just overcooked the soup. The rice noodles don’t need to be cooked for too long.”

Zhong Chengshuo rested his chin on Yin Ren’s shoulder, carefully feeling his body temperature.

“I’ll add some more meat and eggs. It’ll be perfect for breakfast.”

“Sure, go ahead.” Yin Ren took a deep breath, deciding to put this unbearable night behind him.

Anyway, they had found the cause of the disappearances, and it was worth exchanging his embarrassment for such valuable information. Besides… Although he lost control, tonight’s experience was still quite thrilling and exciting. He did feel sorry for Zhong Chengshuo, who ended up with marks all over his body from his biting.

Thinking about this, Yin Ren shook his head vigorously, hoping to shake off the overwhelming shame in his mind.

Zhong Chengshuo’s special lamb soup must have been stewed for a long time, and it must be delicious. A bowl of warm and tasty lamb rice noodles would help put the past behind!

Unable to dodge in time, Zhong Chengshuo, whose face was splashed with water: “……”

Zhong Chengshuo: “Oh, by the way, there’s one more thing. I thought it was necessary to let you know.”

“What is it?”

“To ensure a complete record, I used an anti-evil qi recording pen to capture the audio from last night.” Zhong Chengshuo maintained a solemn expression. “Do you want to listen to it?”

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!”

In the morning, amidst the sound of the audio alarm clock saying, “Is work more important than me?” Yin Ren, who usually liked to sleep in, jolted up as if he was blasted. A few sob-like sounds escaped his throat.

When he went to Shian today, he should also ask about “how to make a science post forget”.

……

“Well, your information is very useful.”

Li Nian pretended not to notice the bite marks on Zhong Chengshuo’s collar that couldn’t be concealed.

“If your conjecture is correct, the victims won’t be in immediate danger. I will start a project on my end to find a way to “stably disappear” and quickly establish a pathway.”

“How long will it take?” Yin Ren coughed dryly twice.

“According to Minister Jiao, if we only consider constructing the pathway, it will take five days. Finding a safe method for round trips is the more time-consuming part.”

“…I see.”

Yin Ren contemplated for a moment.

“Great, you guys keep up with the research. As for us… well, since we have nothing better to do, let’s go check on those who haven’t disappeared.”

After all, Qi Xin had promised them that if Yin Ren could kill Mr. Le, they could officially establish cooperation with her.

Yin Ren wasn’t sure about the intentions of the Primordial Elementals, and although he wanted to rescue Lu Xiaohe’s missing mother, he didn’t want to involve Zhong Chengshuo in any danger. Qi Xin’s original form should still be on the Other Side and having a “local” to assist would be better than stumbling around blindly.

“Besides, the police station has been overwhelmed recently, and they happen to be short-staffed.”

At some point, Fu Xingchuan appeared leaning against the doorway. He held some documents, and his tone wasn’t as relaxed as usual.

“You’ve been in contact with Officer Sun before. He’s currently dealing with a live burial case, and the atmosphere in Haigu has been off lately. It would be better for you to go and take a look.”

“No problem.”

Yin Ren responded quickly. It was like being offered a pillow when feeling sleepy; he was actually looking for an excuse to investigate a “non-disappearance case”.

“We’ll go today.”

Chapter 40: Clue

When washing his disciple vigorously, Shi Jingzhi’s mood was quite complex.

It was false to say that he had no intention of teaching a lesson. Shi Jingzhi controlled the strength well, neither really hurting Yin Ci nor being too gentle like a back-scrubbing service. The disciple seemed like a shrimp in a pot, gradually turning pink as he was scrubbed.

While washing, Shi Jingzhi was also searching for any injuries.

In the forbidden area, Shi Jingzhi had touched living flesh mud with his fingertips. The flesh mud was sticky like glue, instantly sticking to his fingers. Shi Jingzhi managed to remove it in time, but he still lost a layer of skin.

Yin Ci had fallen into it completely, so he should have left some wounds. However, his disciple’s back was intact and smooth, without even any old scars. After scrubbing for a while, Shi Jingzhi only found some strange thin skin with flesh mud stuck to it.

According to Yin Ci’s explanation, these were probably remnants of the ghostskin robe.

Yin Ci had previously stripped down in the Ghost Tomb to prove himself, and it must have covered a considerable area. His disciple couldn’t possibly possess absurd regenerative abilities. If such a convenient technique existed, Yin Ci’s meridians wouldn’t have been damaged.

Yin Ci remained unharmed, most likely due to the ghostskin robe.

Indeed, it was worthy of a family heirloom. Aside from its incredibly realistic disguise effect, it even protected against the flesh mud. It was a pity that it was no longer available. If it weren’t so rare, Shi Jingzhi would have wanted one for himself. This item sounded much more impressive than the “Nuo” masks.

Lost in his thoughts, Shi Jingzhi was brought back to reality by Yin Ci’s words.

“And I am a living person, not an object. Shizun, you don’t need to be blindly attached.”

Was there a difference? Shi Jingzhi was stunned.

Humans were nothing more than objects that could speak and move. Others were like that, and so was he. Sensing his confusion, Yin Ci turned around, grabbed Shi Jingzhi’s long hair, and pulled his face closer.

Amidst the mist of water vapor, the other person’s eyes were like two cold stars. Shi Jingzhi didn’t like being observed like this, and he had a fleeting feeling of being pierced through.

So he probed back.

Through this probing, Shi Jingzhi realized that something wasn’t right.

Originally, his plan was clear and perfect—to capture a disciple and pretend to be the person he expected. As long as the disciple genuinely respected and admired him from the bottom of his heart, he would have tasted the bonds of worldly connections.

To prevent Yin Ci from suspecting, Shi Jingzhi hadn’t initially catered to his preferences. He had intended to take it slowly and gradually, but now he couldn’t see Yin Ci’s desires at all.

Despite being a young person in his twenties, Yin Ci’s eyes were like dried wells, lacking sharpness and anticipation. It was as if he didn’t like anything and didn’t want anything.

With no expectations, Shi Jingzhi couldn’t play the role of the “ideal master” in Yin Ci’s heart, so he had no choice but to continue being himself.

But he didn’t even know what “himself” looked like or how to gain Yin Ci’s affection.

Suddenly, Shi Jingzhi felt a bit panicked.

He was all excited about cultivating a disciple and preparing to reap the bonds of worldly connections. Who would have known that just after watering a few times, he discovered that the seed was dead. Oh heavens, he had just finished washing the person, and now he had to deal with his rebelliousness!

“As your Master…”

Shi Jingzhi wanted to say a few soft words to salvage the image of a gentle master. However, without the other person’s expectations as a reference, his mind felt rusty and completely blank.

Indeed, good things didn’t fall from the sky. The disciple he casually grabbed had a good appearance and excelled in both the martial arts and cooking. It was inevitable that he would be more difficult to handle than an ordinary person.

Fortunately, Yan Qing appeared in time and helped him out.

Upon hearing that it was related to Yan Budu, Shi Jingzhi had no interest in lingering on other matters. He pressed Yin Ci down a bit and rinsed him twice in the medicinal soup, considering it the end of this treatment and lesson.

Yin Ci was washed to the point of losing his temper. He silently put on his clothes and followed behind.

The sun was setting, casting an orange-red hue over the courtyard. Yin Ci, in his pinkish state, was no longer as eye-catching under the radiant sunlight. There was a small stone table set up in the courtyard, and Su Si was placing dishes on it one after another.

Among them were either leftovers that had been reheated or dishes that looked like a mess. Near the table, Lord Bai walked with its head held high, patrolling the courtyard, and the environment was relatively quiet.

“You’re here?” Su Si placed the final dish on the table and wiped his hands on his clothes. He still gave Yin Ci a sideway glance, more vigilant than appreciative.

Compared to Su Si’s attitude, Yin Ci was more concerned about the eerie scene—how did they discover Yan Budu? Not only that, these two brats were setting up a proper gathering. Su Si was one thing, but Yan Qing had been staring at his own toes the whole time, emitting a strong sense of guilt.

After sleeping for a whole day, they were genuinely hungry. The fox found it difficult to treat his disciple. He trembled as he picked up a piece of overcooked vegetable leaf with eyes filled with a hint of despair.

He turned his head and looked pitifully at Yin Ci.

The gaze of his master was fixed on him, Su Si was intermittently scrutinizing, and Yan Qing was secretly observing. Yin Ci was annoyed by the stares of the crowd and stood up directly.

“You two can take some time to think about it. This is not enough to eat. I’ll go add a couple more dishes.”

Shi Jingzhi slowly put down his chopsticks with a calm expression on his face. “Mm, we’ll wait for Yin Ci to come back before we eat.”

For some reason, there was a commotion at the table, but Yan Qing gradually calmed down. He silently nibbled on a steamed cake and went over last night’s events in his mind. Yin Ci hadn’t guessed wrong; it was indeed difficult to explain things clearly in just a few words.

Time reversed to the previous night.

Outside the forbidden area.

Seeing the master and disciple enter the forbidden area one after another, Yan Qing was a bit stunned. “A’Si, do you know where the Goddess resides?”

Su Si, rarely not smiling, pondered for a moment with his head down. “I know. Come with me for a moment. I’ll bring Lord Bai along.”

Su Si’s residence was a distance away from the forbidden area. At this moment, there was no one in the house, but the sound of Lord Bai eating vegetables could be heard from outside the window. Yan Qing walked ahead, glancing around, and just as he opened the door—

“Snap.”

Taking advantage of Yan Qing looking into the room, Su Si swiftly brought down his hand with a chop. Unexpectedly, Yan Qing was prepared and caught his wrist, and their hands froze in mid-air.

Time seemed to stand still.

“…You’ve improved.” Su Si smiled, as if he had only intended to pat Yan Qing’s shoulder.

Yan Qing didn’t buy into his act. “So, you wanted to knock me out, and then what?”

“Since you’ve guessed it, why bother asking me?”

In the dim night, Su Si’s face hid in the shadows, and his smile became somewhat eerie.

Yan Qing released his hand. “A’Si, I’ve been meaning to say this before. We’re not nine years old anymore. You don’t have to treat me as if I’m still nine.”

Su Si’s enthusiastic expression faded a bit, and he looked steadily at Yan Qing. “If we miss this opportunity, it’ll be too late. Even if they get out of the forbidden area, there’s no guarantee they’ll find any clues. They might not even be able to make it out… Let them attract the attention of the Goddess, and I’ll interrogate a villager to find a way out.”

He paused. “Given your character, you naturally wouldn’t agree, so I’ll have to knock you out first.”

“Sect Master Shi saved my life.” Yan Qing stood calmly in place. “If they, master and disciple, have such thoughts, they can simply send me into the forbidden area as bait and find a way to escape.”

Whether through coercion or enticement, they could always find a suitable guide, especially a child like Yin Deng, who was easily fooled, or Mian Jie, a gentle woman who cherished her family. As for what would happen to the guide after they left, that wasn’t a concern for the escapees.

Indeed, it was the simplest approach.

Su Si casually said, “They would be foolish to do so. Regardless of whether the villagers are aware or not, we were the ones who were deceived from the beginning.”

Yan Qing asked, “Then why didn’t you run earlier?”

Su Si was momentarily stunned, without an answer.

Yan Qing sighed softly. No matter how warm and familiar Su Si acted, the past was already gone. They escaped twelve years ago and separated ten years ago. How many ten-year periods did a mortal have in their lifetime?

Long ago, they had stood beneath the starry sky in the same manner.

[Look, I said we could escape! I don’t want the name “Su Sigou” anymore. You’re literate. Help me come up with a new one.]

[Su Si.]

[That’s hardly any change at all!]

[It’s not the “Si (四)” from “four dogs”, it’s “Si (肆)” as in “unrestrained”*. By the way, I also want to change my name… I want to change it to “Yan Qing”. A’Si, put me down. I’ll write it for you to see.]

*Clarity: This was explained before. The new [Si] () is from unrestrained/reckless/wanton (肆意). His old name is four [Si] () + dog [Gou] ().

Su Si wiped the sweat off his face, crouched down, and let go of the skinny child on his back. Yan Qing picked up a tree branch and solemnly gestured on the ground.

Su Si didn’t know many characters. When he saw the character “Si ()” he was taken aback. [Why are there so many strokes? I don’t want this!*]

*Clarity: 13 () vs 5 ()… Though it’s still the same if you count 8 [gou] ().

Yan Qing ignored him and continued drawing on the ground. [I want to change it to this “Yan (闫)” character. It’s pronounced the same as “Yan (阎)”, so you won’t pronounce it wrong.]

Su Si looked left and right, up and down, and only recognized the “three (三)” character in “Yan (闫).” His eyes lit up with mischief. [I can change to Su Si, and you can call me A’Si, then I’ll call you San Zi. Doesn’t that sound like we’re brothers?*]

*Clarity: So this is where we find out why Su Si calls Yan Qing San Zi (Three Son)… It’s a bit cheeky because Su Si is the fourth son in his family (which is why he was named Su Sigou). Generally, among a group of friends or within a family, they can be referred to as First Son/Brother, Second Son/Brother, ect. || In this context, it makes it sound like they are brothers in terms of both friendship and familial.

After saying that, Su Si seemed amused by this idea and burst into laughter.

After laughing enough, his eyes sparkled. [San Zi, if we manage to escape today, no one will bother us anymore. Tell me, what do you want to do from now on?]

[I don’t know… To be honest, I want to live a stable life without being controlled because of these eyes of mine.]

Su Si: [Hmph, how unambitious! I want to become a hero—a hero riding a great horse and wielding a long sword. It would be even better if I could be from the Taiheng Sect; their attire looks the best.]

[Great horses are expensive, and so are long swords.] Yan Qing honestly pointed out. [The Taiheng Sect is filled with rich kids. It takes a lot of money to wander the rivers and lakes.]

Su Si couldn’t finish his grandiose declaration when it was choked by this chicken-like little companion. He thought for a while but couldn’t come up with a good idea to make money. He could only grumble with a stubborn pout. [I don’t care. I still want to become a hero.]

Yan Qing pondered with a furrowed brow. [Then, when I find a good job, I’ll help you save money. It’s… It’s a way to repay the debt from all these years.]

Su Si was very pleased but couldn’t resist teasing a little more. [Why do you always go on about debts? You’re so stingy.]

[Because others have no reason to be good to me. If someone is good to me, I should remember it.]

[Ah, San Zi. If you continue like this, you’ll be easily deceived sooner or later.]

……

Who would have thought that after ten years, the first person to deceive him would be Su Si himself.

Yan Qing clearly understood Su Si’s move to save Yin Deng. As a former member of the Taiheng Sect, he saw through it. He didn’t know if the master and disciple of the Kushan Sect had noticed, but he remained silent and didn’t expose it publicly.

Even now, Yan Qing didn’t know if keeping it a secret was right or wrong.

Su Si probably realized the flaw as well. Now that it was only the two of them left, there were things that reached the tip of their tongues, but neither of them was willing to speak first.

They had once been the closest people to each other in the world, and that closeness was too precious. Even if it was fake, no one wanted to break it.

In that fleeting moment, Yan Qing suddenly understood Su Si’s behavior. If they hadn’t reunited in this crisis-ridden place, both of them might have concealed their wounds and pretended that time hadn’t passed.

Even though they knew that the hearts of old friends could change easily, there were plenty of performances in the mortal world. But even if it was fake, it was still good. They could both pretend that they still had a home.

“Fine. I can take my time by myself, but I don’t want you to die here. That’s all.”

Finally, Su Si sighed. He stopped looking at Yan Qing and went to grab Lord Bai. “I admit, I’m not a good person and can’t become a hero. After wandering in the martial world for so long, I’ve learned at least one thing. You were right when you said that great horses and long swords are expensive… The desire to become a hero, especially so.”

“Sixty-seven taels of silver.”

“What?”

“I’ve saved up sixty-seven taels of silver,” Yan Qing said calmly. “In these years at Taiheng, I waited for you while saving up. When we get out of here, you can use it to buy a horse and a sword.”

Su Si tightened his grip, causing Lord Bai to honk out in discomfort. “Are you crazy?”

“I don’t know what happened to you in these ten years, but based on your move to save Yin Deng, I trust you.”

Yan Qing spoke seriously, so seriously that it was hard to argue with him. “Besides, if you had really become a heartless scoundrel, you wouldn’t be considering any other way to leave after being trapped for so long.”

This time, Su Si was stunned for a long time.

He seemed like he wanted to make a sarcastic remark, but it was difficult for him to say it. Gradually, his pretense of enthusiasm faded, revealing a faint but sincere nostalgia.

Finally, he burst into laughter, showing glimpses of his past self.

Su Si smacked his lips and sounded much lighter. “You haven’t changed at all—still so foolish. Fine, sixty-seven taels of silver. Let’s consider it as you hiring me, and I’ll go with you.”

“Okay. But A’Si, you have to tell me… When did you join the Chigou Sect, and why did you have to hide everywhere?”

Su Si’s smile froze.

After a while, he sighed deeply, looking up to the sky. “You’ve truly figured it out, San Zi. Can’t you be a little more foolish?”

“Taiheng still has control over the Chigou Sect. Even as a servant, I’ve witnessed the Chigou Sect’s techniques.”

“Let’s make it clear first, I’m not part of the Chigou Sect now. They said I had good talent, and since I have no parents, they forced me to become some damn assassin. I secretly learned their skills and escaped. They hate me to death, which is why they’re chasing me everywhere.”

As he spoke, he narrowed his eyes, hiding all the bloody twists and turns beneath his smile.

Yan Qing: “…”

He suddenly felt that the Kushan Sect and the Chigou Sect were in conflict, and if Su Si were to encounter them, it meant that they were not unrelated.

“Take me to the Goddess first.”

“Alright. Sixty-seven taels, as you said.”

“Yeah, about your identity, you also have to explain it to Sect Master Shi,” Yan Qing said earnestly, adding a comforting remark, “Don’t worry, Sect Master Shi has offended Matron Wuxue quite a bit, so one more thing won’t matter.”

“…Tsk, that old hag is really persistent.” Su Si clearly wasn’t comforted.

The Goddess’ house was located in the center of the village. It had a large courtyard and an elegant appearance, making it quite conspicuous.

As they continued their conversation, Su Si no longer had any scruples. He acted ruthlessly, swiftly knocking down the villagers guarding the gate. Unfortunately, their stroke of luck ended there. The Goddess had set up various arrays of different sizes around, and they could only break the smaller ones. When they finally reached the Goddess’ bedroom, the two of them stared at each other, hesitating to take another step.

Even Lord Bai raised its voice and let out two warning honks.

The two of them couldn’t just retreat without achieving anything, so they had to rummage around the outer hall. Unexpectedly, during their search, they actually found something.

Yuanxian Village had records of outsiders, and they were mixed with the records of ordinary villagers. Since there weren’t many outsiders, the records were only a thin volume. Yan Qing cautiously opened it with the mentality of “it won’t hurt to look at it”.

A certain entry from 107 years ago jumped right under his nose.

[During late autumn, a true immortal arrived here with an outsider. The outsider’s name was Yan Budu, with an exceptional immortal potential and naturally red eyes. The person is obstinate and cruel, making him very difficult to get along with. Due to deliberately destroying the demonic tree, the villagers detest him.]

[Yan Budu resided here for three days, then left with the true immortal, never to return.]

107 years ago was the year when Yan Budu disappeared.

The author has something to say:

The seed surname Yin refuses to sprout, while the old farmer surname Shi sheds bitter tears.

Fox: How could this happen? I knew that good things never last; there must be something bad happening, wuwu.

Demonic Lord: Lying peacefully in the earth, not even bothering to turn over.

Chapter 39: Master and Disciple

Half an hour ago, the forbidden area.

“You want me to pretend to be an immortal?” Yin Ci was somewhat surprised.

“Yes. I’ll just say my disciple died down there. Your previous disguise is too convincing, making it difficult to explain to the outside world. It’s better to abandon it.”

Shi Jingzhi regained some strength and prepared to set fires around.

“Of course, you don’t need to perform any magic tricks. Just pretend to be unconscious. I can use the excuse of ‘treating the divine spirit’ and close the door to visitors. Your face is convincing enough, and they already believe in immortal potential nonsense, so they won’t suspect for now.”

‘It’s also a way,’ Yin Ci thought to himself.

The villagers’ feelings towards the Goddess couldn’t disappear immediately, no matter how they explained it. The matter of the “Goddess’s remains being nonexistent” would raise suspicions. It would be better to establish a new deity and stabilize the villagers first. With the testimony of Yin Deng, this absurd plan seemed feasible.

After a chaotic night, although the two had countless words, they held back and didn’t speak of them and instead silently tidied themselves up, barely restoring their appearance as normal people. They then pulled up the unconscious Yin Deng from the corner.

The plan officially began.

The master and disciple stayed in the forbidden area for a night. Now that they were out, the air was so fresh that it made people teary-eyed.

Considering the previous eruption before entering the forbidden area, Shi Jingzhi had been going all out the whole way—first holding back, then exploding, and finally exhausting himself completely. His disciple had a sturdy physique and was quite heavy. He was so tired that his legs trembled, yet he had to pretend to be a deity and put on a superior demeanor.

Yin Ci didn’t fare any better.

He continued to close his eyes, pretending to be an unconscious and distressed deity. Shi Jingzhi walked unsteadily, which made his heart also fluctuate with worry, afraid that his cheap master, who had taken advantage of him, would stumble and fall on him, shattering their carefully planned scheme in front of everyone.

When facing the Goddess in battle, Yin Ci had never been this nervous.

Fortunately, Shi Jingzhi had some backbone after all, and his luck was also good. He hadn’t taken a few steps when Yan Qing rushed up.

Yan Qing frowned at the “stranger” Yin Ci but didn’t ask a single question. Shi Jingzhi breathed a sigh of relief and adjusted his hold to a supporting stance. The two of them carried Yin Ci, one on each side, back to the room.

Su Si followed behind with an expressionless face, blocking a few people who wanted to ask questions. Fortunately, most of the villagers didn’t realize what was happening and were left dumbfounded as they were left behind.

Once inside the room, Shi Jingzhi suddenly weakened. He fell to the ground with a thud and instantly fell into a deep sleep. Yin Ci tried to stand up but found that his sleeve was tightly gripped by Shi Jingzhi.

On the other side, Yan Qing attempted to remove the flag from Shi Jingzhi but experienced the firmness of a fox’s claws—Shi Jingzhi slept soundly, grabbing everything that needed to be grabbed.

After thinking for a moment, Yin Ci obediently laid down on one side and fell asleep on the spot.

After a night of intense battle, his energy was equally depleted, and replenishing his physical strength was a priority.

Yan Qing, Su Si: “…”

Su Si tapped Yin Ci with his toe. “No, who are you?”

Yin Ci turned over and said, “I’m the senior disciple of the Kushan Sect.”

Su Si: “…San Zi, I told you this sect is suspicious. Setting aside the face-changing thing, just look at how the master and disciple look. Which one of them resembles a normal person?”

Yan Qing’s gaze swept back and forth between the two and finally settled on Su Si’s face. After a moment of silence, he sighed softly. “Let’s lend a hand and move them to the inner room.”

The master and disciple went to sleep in the early morning to evening.

Shi Jingzhi guessed right. He gave himself the title of “Envoy of the Imperial Celestial”, and the villagers didn’t dare to visit him. Yin Deng became the only witness, and people flocked to Mian Jie’s house, trying to dig up some information. The young girl was greatly shocked, and she only mentioned that there was indeed something strange about “ascending to immortality,” but she didn’t want to say too much, leaving people helpless.

For now, they managed to get through this day.

When Yin Ci woke up again, Shi Jingzhi was nowhere to be seen. Only Yan Qing was staring at him with a face that expressed “unbelievable” on the right side and “how could this be” on the left.

Yin Ci wasn’t in the mood to explain one by one. He got straight to the point. “Where is Shizun?”

“Sect Master Shi is in the innermost room in the backyard. He said to let you go there when you wake up.”

Here it is. Many things occurred in the forbidden area, and they couldn’t avoid a long conversation. Yin Ci went over the lines he had thought of in his mind and calmly proceeded.

The room in the backyard wasn’t large, and the door was slightly ajar. A strong medicinal smell mixed with a hint of hostility wafted out, hitting him in the face.

Is Shi Jingzhi going to settle the score with him? Well, he would meet him head-on.

However, after taking a good look at the situation inside the room, Yin Ci froze at the doorway.

There was an additional folding screen in the innermost room of the backyard, and behind it, there was a bathtub filled to the brim with terrifyingly colored medicinal liquid. Shi Jingzhi had clearly taken a bath in advance, as his hair was still damp.

Upon seeing Yin Ci enter, Shi Jingzhi had an expressionless face. While exuding a fierce aura, he lifted a hairbrush towards his disciple.

Yin Ci turned and walked away.

Shi Jingzhi flicked his sleeve, and two surges of true qi shot out, slamming the door shut. “Yin Ci, come here.”

Oh, now he’s using his full name. Yin Ci turned his head, no longer pretending to be an obedient disciple. “What? Shizun wants to have another go?”

Shi Jingzhi’s momentum was overwhelming. “I need to talk to you.”

“Then put down the brush first.”

“If you’re uncomfortable, you can go into the water with your undergarments. I need to confirm your physical condition since you fell into the pool.” Shi Jingzhi swung the brush, displaying an aura as if he were wielding an ancient weapon.

Fine, he couldn’t escape from the inevitable*. Let him brush then, unless Shi Jingzhi intended to peel off his skin. Yin Ci kept his pants on and entered the bathtub shirtless.

*Can avoid the first day of school but not the fifteenth (躲过初一,躲不过十五) Idiom referring to you can avoid for a while but in the end you can’t escape.

As it turned out, Shi Jingzhi didn’t actually intend to peel off his skin, but the force he applied was almost there…

Not long after, Yin Ci gritted his teeth and said, “Shizun, stop scrubbing. I really was only wearing a ghostskin robe.”

He highly suspected that Shi Jingzhi was using this opportunity to teach him a lesson, as his skin was about to be scrubbed off. Even if the ghostskin robe was still intact, it could be brushed to tatters by his master.

Shi Jingzhi raised an eyebrow. “Oh, so that thing is called a ghostskin robe. It’s quite convenient. When I saw you in the Ghost Tomb last time, I really thought I was seeing a ghost.”

Immediately, he gave the brush a flick. “Is your name really ‘Yin Ci’? Who exactly are you?”

Yin Ci turned his head and looked at Shi Jingzhi, who had a stern and murderous expression. The pre-prepared lie came out smoothly.

“I am the great-grandson of the former Patriarch of the Chigou Sect, Su Zhi. My name is indeed Yin Ci. The Su lineage has congenital meridian damage, unable to cultivate inner force. Unwilling to get involved in the affairs of the martial world, my grandfather changed his name and went into seclusion in the mountains, passing down only one magic treasure and a set of sword techniques…”

“The ghostskin robe and Bone Sweeping Sword technique?” Shi Jingzhi interrupted.

“That’s right. I have an unusually distinctive appearance, so my grandfather had me wear the ghostskin robe to avoid drawing attention.”

“Why did you hide it from me?”

Yin Ci told the truth. “I found it interesting.”

Shi Jingzhi immediately gave him a brush stroke. “You deceived me in the Ghost Tomb, and that was interesting?”

“Because I wanted to know what kind of person Shizun is. The situation of the Su clan has special circumstances, so if I’m going to follow you in the future, I must first explore the truth. When you said you wanted to take me in, I couldn’t simply believe it. Offending people in the Ghost Tomb was unexpected… Ah, be gentler!”

“You didn’t expect me to be so insane, huh?” Shi Jingzhi lowered his gaze.

Yin Ci was taken aback. After spending so much time together, it was the first time he heard Shi Jingzhi voluntarily talk about this matter.

“Now that you’re willing to open up, there should be give and take. I have a slight heart condition, and occasionally I lose control. In the future, when we travel the martial world, I hope you can bear with me a bit more… As for this time, for deceiving your elder, I will deduct half a year’s stipend.”

Yin Ci: “……”

The good news was that Shi Jingzhi didn’t intend to kick him out of the Kushan Sect.

The bad news was that he was working for free.

Fortunately, Yin Ci only momentarily lost focus. He grasped onto the topic and wouldn’t let the fox sidestep it. “A slight heart condition?”

Was it referring to the “heart condition” of going crazy for a half-stranger or the “heart condition” of being able to quickly calm down and kill the Goddess? He finally had the chance to understand Shi Jingzhi’s ghostly logic and wouldn’t let it slip by.

Shi Jingzhi stopped his actions, and that obscure and mysterious gaze from the forbidden ground appeared once again.

With peace now surrounding them, Yin Ci could discern the meaning behind that gaze—it wasn’t protection or lingering affection. It was pure evaluation.

It seemed that Shi Jingzhi had realized that his disciple truly had no inner force, and compared to when they first left the Ghost Tomb, his attitude was no longer as cautious and meticulous. His master’s aura was like a handful of deadly weeds—whether it was suppressed by a stubborn rock or mud, as long as there was a slight crack, it would grow wildly, attempting to stand on equal ground with heaven and earth.

By willingly stepping into the bathtub and engaging in this conversation, Yin Ci had already embraced Shi Jingzhi’s path. He knew that if he wanted to stay, then his master would still be his master, and he would still be the disciple.

“Shizun, what kind of heart condition?” Seeing that Shi Jingzhi remained silent for a long time, Yin Ci asked again.

Shi Jingzhi sighed and said, “A’Ci, have you heard of ‘object addiction’?”

“Object addiction?”

“Ordinary people may develop addictions to alcohol or gambling, but for me, I have an object addiction. I become particularly attached to things related to myself, whether it’s possessions, weapons, or disciples. Among them, the thing I can least part with is my own life.”

“Ordinary people don’t want to die either.”

“For ordinary people, preserving their lives is like how a person who loves wine feels about fine wine. However, there’s a difference between a ‘wine lover’ and a ‘drunkard’. Even if the wine is excellent, if it’s mixed with poison, most people wouldn’t drink it, but a drunkard is another story… In any case, when this impulse arises, I also have trouble controlling it.”

Yin Ci completely lost focus and let his master scrub his shoulders.

Whether it was his attitude toward his disciple or his attitude toward the Goddess, this explanation made sense. However, Yin Ci always felt that something was off—Shi Jingzhi’s explanation was too smooth, as if it had been prepared in advance.

Furthermore, having traveled the world for over three hundred years, Yin Ci had never heard of such a peculiar addiction. “Object addiction” was probably similar to his “great-grandson” identity, a mixture of truth and falsehood that was difficult to discern.

They weren’t close friends, and it was impossible for them to reveal such intimate matters.

But that was fine. With just a bit of truth in his fabricated story, they could both release a bit of their true nature. He still needed this fox as there was a long road ahead. It was hard to say who would expose the other first.

So he stopped at this point. “So what you’re saying is, if I were completely wiped out, you would go insane. If you were to discover a clue to staying alive, you would go insane. Shizun, you’re quite peculiar when you go mad.”

Shi Jingzhi snorted coldly and applied a bit more force with the brush.

Yin Ci chuckled softly. “And I am a living person, not an object. Shizun, you don’t need to be blindly attached.”

As soon as his words fell, Shi Jingzhi stopped brushing, and his expression gradually became strange. Seeing his reaction, Yin Ci’s scalp tingled for a moment.

Judging from Shi Jingzhi’s expression, it didn’t seem like he was thinking, “What nonsense are you talking about?” but rather, “There’s something to this? This is the first time I’ve realized it.”

Yin Ci sat in the hot water, but a chill slowly crept up his spine.

Object addiction.

Shi Jingzhi’s care, anger, madness, and scrutiny toward himself suddenly had another interpretation.

Like a child receiving their first gift, he carefully tucked it into his embrace. Once lost or damaged, it would undoubtedly bring both grief and anger. Now that the shell of this object had been peeled off, he discovered that the interior was more exquisite and intriguing than he imagined, and it must be carefully examined.

Will it hurt me? How should I play with it to make myself happiest? Does it have any other secrets?

Regardless, it belongs to me.

When Shi Jingzhi’s past displays of affection and care were recalled now, they seemed as if they were separated by a thin veil, yet they made perfect sense.

…What bullshit Shi family. Normal families couldn’t produce children like this.

Even if a child was abused from a young age, they would still have a concept of “interacting with others”, even if it was a distorted concept filled with resentment. However, judging from Shi Jingzhi’s condition, he had only a vague understanding of this.

There was something wrong with this person’s background.

Yin Ci turned completely, locking eyes with Shi Jingzhi. Shi Jingzhi still had a strange and vacant expression, as if he were desperately trying to recall something, and the brush in his hand was still dripping water.

Yin Ci grabbed the drooping ends of Shi Jingzhi’s hair and pulled him closer. For the first time, he concentrated all his attention and looked directly at that bewitching face.

Until now, Yin Ci had always considered himself superior. He knew that Shi Jingzhi was somewhat special, but he had never seriously observed his master. After all, it was just a temporary plaything that would eventually be discarded. This person was usually lively and energetic, occasionally going mad at most, but not to the extent that it required special attention.

It turned out that swimming could drown a good swimmer. He had completely misjudged.

Through Shi Jingzhi’s amber eyes, Yin Ci couldn’t find a complete “human heart”.

At the depths of Shi Jingzhi’s gaze, there were only scattered fragments. He had a full range of emotions, yet he was like a child, in an extremely primitive state, unable to form a normal human being.

His obsession with life was more akin to that of a thirsty plant than to the ordinary human condition.

‘…It seems that I need to correct a thought,’ Yin Ci thought to himself.

To him, Shi Jingzhi was no longer a simple source of amusement. His master was wrapped in numerous mysteries and entangled in countless fates. Yin Ci insisted on piecing together those fragments, carefully examining what exactly was hidden within this shell.

“A’Ci?” Shi Jingzhi brushed his disciple like a cow for a while, but seeing that Yin Ci was really just skin and bones now, he let out a sigh. Feeling the intense gaze upon him, his heart tightened, fearing that he would provoke a rebellious response from his disciple.

Yin Ci slowly smiled and released Shi Jingzhi’s hair. “As a living person, I can take care of myself. It’s better for Shizun to have fewer fits of madness, as anger damages the liver.”

Shi Jingzhi’s expression relaxed a bit. “Master…”

He couldn’t finish his sentence.

Perhaps Shi Jingzhi had been brushing his disciple for too long, but Yan Qing, unable to bear it any longer, came knocking on the door. “Sect Master, I have something to discuss about the Goddess. We found her residence and discovered some… strange things.”

Shi Jingzhi’s attention immediately shifted. “Strange things?”

“Yes. Yan Budu seems to have been here.”

Chapter 191: Shelf Life

Zhong Chengshuo stood in the kitchen, holding a slotted spoon, and for the first time in his life, he had serious doubts.

Since Yin Ren brought up the issue in the taxi, he hadn’t uttered a word. The moment he returned home, he opened the refrigerator door. Lord Ghost King leaned against the refrigerator partition with a deep gaze and focused on the inside of the refrigerator.

Zhong Chengshuo tied on his apron as usual, which had “Dangerous Person” written on it. Only now did he realize that someone had added an extra stroke to the apron, changing “Dangerous Person” to “Big Shot”*.

*Yin Ren added a line across () in person (人物) changing it to () Beast (大物) (transliteral would be “big thing”).

“……”

He glanced at Yin Ren, who was intimately close to the refrigerator, and silently adjusted the modified apron. He decided to make a lamb stew. Thirty minutes later, Zhong Chengshuo’s foam had been skimmed off ninety-nine times, but Yin Ren still had his head in the refrigerator. The aroma of the lamb drifted into the living room, but it didn’t seem to affect him.

Finally unable to bear it any longer, Zhong Chengshuo covered the stew pot and walked over to Yin Ren. Mimicking Yin Ren’s movements, he leaned forward and rested his chin on the refrigerator partition.

It was cool, but nothing special. Lately, they hadn’t been at home much, and the eggs were no longer fresh. Zhong Chengshuo’s gaze swept over rows of ingredients as he quickly calculated in his mind.

Two grown men squeezed in front of the refrigerator, creating a scene that defied description.

To the point that when Hu Tao happily crawled back to the living room, she let out a high-pitched scream. Only then did Yin Ren snap out of his daze and tilt his head slightly. “What are you doing?”

“Just see if you’ve noticed anything.”

Amidst the bubbling sound of the stew, Zhong Chengshuo focused on the inside of the refrigerator.

“…” Yin Ren pulled his head back and reached for two bottles of soda. “Let’s go to the sofa.”

Hu Tao looked at the two seemingly insane people, while floating silently on the ceiling. Yin Ren glanced at her, unusually not shooing her away. He squeezed onto one end of the sofa and made room for Zhong Chengshuo. “Come.”

Zhong Chengshuo didn’t even bother taking off his apron. He obediently sat cross-legged on the other end.

“Based on your current conjecture, the Other Side is like the ‘internet’ composed of the brains of countless organisms. The Elementals are like ‘programmatic’ creatures living within it. They have their own food chain and their own feeding criteria.”

Yin Ren struggled to make an analogy.

Zhong Chengshuo held the soda bottle tightly in his hands and nodded silently. On the other hand, Hu Tao’s expression became even more bewildered, and her neck was about to twist ninety degrees.

“One thing you mentioned earlier caught my attention. You said that human emotions can’t be used as a benchmark.” Yin Ren shook the soda bottle.

Zhong Chengshuo nodded more vigorously.

Yin Ren no longer leaned against the sofa. He leaned forward and placed the soda in front of Zhong Chengshuo.

It was apple juice soda that he specifically bought. Zhong Chengshuo didn’t like these overly industrialized products, whereas Yin Ren was the opposite. After negotiations between the two Primordial Elementals, they finally reached a certain consensus, compromising between taste and health.

The transparent bottle was adorned with vibrant packaging paper, and the ingredients were relatively simple and healthy. However, the shelf life was longer than that of freshly squeezed juice.

Yin Ren turned the side with the shelf life information towards Zhong Chengshuo. “Since human conditions cannot be used as a benchmark, why don’t we just forget about those subtle standards of love and affection… What if we look at it from the perspective of a Primordial Elemental?”

Zhong Chengshuo’s gaze was blank for a moment, then gradually became sharper. The next second, he turned his head to look at the refrigerator.

The refrigerator stood silently in its place, emitting an almost inaudible hum.

“Human bodies can be preserved for a longer time on the Other Side. When Gao Mengyu disappeared for a few weeks initially, she was just a little weak when she was rescued,” Zhong Chengshuo muttered to himself, holding the chilled beverage. “This is physical preservation.”

“But according to Jiao Lian, the human mind can’t last for long on the Other Side. Even strong-willed individuals will go insane after spending too much time there. Those people turned into furniture by Bai Yongji didn’t remain clear-minded for long.”

Yin Ren shook the soda in his hand, causing countless bubbles to escape from the juice.

“Even madmen have emotions, but it’s hard to determine the category of those emotions, right? Even if the body can be preserved, the quality of food will deteriorate. If it were me, I would want chilled soda—with a long shelf life and a consistent taste.”

But that was all he could think of. Yin Ren knew he had grasped the right clue, but he always felt like he missed something.

Zhong Chengshuo suddenly got up from the sofa. He quickly dashed into the bedroom and soon came back, holding his tablet in his hand.

“These are the people who didn’t meet the ‘good personality’ criteria.”

He directly grabbed Yin Ren and swiftly scrolled through the screen.

Several small gangsters had poor reputations, but they all had a peculiar commonality—

They only had one family member left.

Young siblings, parents with only one person remaining, or lone grandparents.

That street vendor, who was infamous for being stingy, worked from dawn until night, earning money for her deaf daughter’s surgery.

They also met the criteria of “love”.

“According to what you said, it’s indeed possible that it has nothing to do with the intensity of love,” Zhong Chengshuo said softly, sliding his fingertip across the screen. It stopped at the profile of Lu Xiaohe’s mother, “He Huan”.

“If it’s for the sake of ‘shelf life’, then all of this makes sense. Yin Ren, you thought I was dead. During that time, would you have gone crazy or wanted to die?”

“Huh?” Yin Ren was taken aback. “I just wanted to find your body, maybe go into seclusion for a few hundred years while holding you. But if you’re talking about really going crazy or wanting to die, I…”

“I would still live my life well, but I would always remember you.” Yin Ren pondered for a moment and gave a firm reply.

He really was past the age of <Romeo and Juliet>, so he wouldn’t go crazy or die for love on the spot. What was going on? Could it be that he wasn’t chosen by the wooden talisman because his mind wasn’t consumed by love?

“You like me, but I’m not your ‘main reason to keep living’. You have much more experience than me, so you’re not that naive. Someone like you, if trapped on the Other Side, it wouldn’t necessarily be ‘love’ that supports you.”

Yin Ren pondered and couldn’t deny it.

Once thrown into the Other Side, he couldn’t say for sure if he would be one-third curious, one-third sorrowful, and one-third longing for Zhong Chengshuo, with the remaining reminiscing about various modern delicacies.

Zhong Chengshuo nodded.

“But these people are different.”

“The lives of these gangsters are a mess, and their loved ones are their only concern. That street vendor sacrificed her own life in exchange for her child’s health… Lu Xiaohe’s mother is seriously ill, and her concern for her child is her greatest support. Zhong Chengfeng truly loves her work and life; her faith comes from her love for ‘others’.”

“Huang Jin is even easier to explain. He had genuinely sought death. When Ding Lizi pulled him back, she, in a certain sense, became his obsession.”

Yin Ren’s eyes lit up as he tightly gripped the bottle. “That’s it! If these people were trapped on the Other Side, what would keep them clear-minded is undoubtedly intense ‘love’—long shelf life, high purity, perfect food.”

Zhong Chengshuo placed his tablet aside and picked up his bottle of apple soda, tapping it against Yin Ren’s bottle.

“Yes,” Zhong Chengshuo said as he adjusted his glasses. “But so far, it’s just speculation.”

“Indeed, but it can only be tested with different people, which is also difficult to verify.” Yin Ren deflated quickly.

“…Boring, I thought you were going to say something else.” Hu Tao’s voice echoed faintly from the ceiling.

“In the end, it’s still about the case; not exciting at all. Xiao Yin, come on, find something interesting for Sister to watch. It’s time for a break.”

“This case is quite important.” Yin Ren opened the juice and took a sip. The aroma of apples instantly filled his mouth, bringing a sense of refreshment.

“Huh? Is that how you put it?” Hu Tao floated closer, wearing a gossipy expression. “What case? What case? Can I go on a business trip? You haven’t called us recently.”

“Missing people case, which is likely related to the disappearance cases from twenty-eight… twenty-nine years ago.” Faced with Hu Tao, who had a contract with him, Yin Ren didn’t bother hiding it.

A peculiar expression of curiosity froze on Hu Tao’s face and her complexion turned somewhat grim.

“Oh, the cases from twenty-nine years ago.” Her tone was cheerful but slightly peculiar. “Those should be thoroughly investigated.”

After saying that, she brushed aside her overgrown bangs, and her dim eyes locked onto Yin Ren.

“Uh, I don’t really understand the Other Side and all, but if you want to obtain ‘intense love’, I might have a way.”

……

Dawn at the Haigu Public Security Bureau.

“Hey sweetie, Dad won’t be coming home tonight.” Officer Sun sent a voice message to his daughter, then vigorously scratched his head at his desk.

Since Shian mentioned “a little trouble,” there had been many challenging cases in Haigu. The cases themselves weren’t particularly sensational and solving them wasn’t difficult. The trouble lay in the fact that these cases always sparked a significant amount of online public opinion.

Several unemployed young individuals anonymously posted criminal threats online, then proceeded to splash sulfuric acid on fashionable girls in the city center. Another aimless hoodlum lurked in the commercial district alley and slit the throat of a young boss.

Nighttime assaults, random arson, homemade bomb injuries… one crime after another, all indiscriminate.

Although the cases were solved, the impact they brought couldn’t dissipate quickly. The negative influence didn’t diminish; instead, it grew larger. Just as they apprehended the inept acid-splashing imitator, another person emerged on the streets, slashing people. Seeing the situation gradually worsen, the pressure from higher-ups also increased significantly.

Officer Sun forcefully rubbed his face, feeling as if he had aged ten years.

“Everyone’s gone mad.”

He wearily patted the case files, unsure of what to do.

Compared to these inexplicable cases, previous incidents of bloody street brawls and domestic violence seemed “ordinary.” Judging by recent public opinion, many people no longer regarded the previous cases of harm to acquaintances as a big deal.

Not to mention that some cases were “contagious”. Allowing them to spread freely, causing panic and imitation. However, if the information was tightly controlled, suspicions of “covering up” would arise. Given the current state of public opinion, no matter what they did, people would find fault with it.

Unfortunately, the police force had been stretched thin recently, with each officer essentially doing the work of two. Officer Sun felt a throbbing pain in his head, and the cursor on his computer had been blinking after the word “proposal” for half an hour, yet not a single word had been written.

“This can’t go on. If we don’t handle it properly, who knows what Haigu will become…”

Officer Sun took a sip of strong tea, a tinge of blue appearing in his eyes.

“Lao Sun, something’s happened!”

Officer Sun almost choked on his tea, still halfway through drinking.

“What happened? Tell me!”

“There’s an incident at Haigu Junior High. A young girl was buried alive!” Another officer gasped for breath. “When she was found, she was still breathing and was rushed to the municipal hospital for treatment… Regardless of whether it’s murder or attempted murder, it’s our case.”

Officer Sun grabbed a handful of his hair and pounded it against the thick stack of case files.

“Damn it!”

At the same time, a red dot appeared in the upper right corner of his WeChat.

[Let Me See Your Heart: Dad, it’s alright. I can’t come back either. There are patients to save.]

[Let Me See Your Heart: One of my previous patients, a girl with congenital heart disease, claims she was buried alive.]

[Let Me See Your Heart: This is absolutely insane!]

Well, at least he could see his daughter.

Officer Sun stood up and put on his leather jacket. Just as he was about to leave, he paused and grabbed a handful of chocolate candies from the drawer.

……

Between his fingertips, Yin Ren held something resembling a chocolate candy with a complicated expression that was extremely delicate.

“…Is this progress in society? No, is this even considered progress?”

Sitting upright on the couch, Zhong Chengshuo didn’t answer him.

“I’ve heard from the Nightwalkers that it’s guaranteed to work,” Hu Tao assured, patting her chest. “It doesn’t harm the body, and apparently, it tastes good too.”

“Oh.” Yin Ren continued to observe the chocolate-like substance. “Safety certification from Shian is unquestionable, while certification from Sunken Society is undoubtedly problematic. As for what the Nightwalkers can certify, that’s truly a mystery. No one knows how effective it will be.”

This was the “intense love” that Miss Hu Tao highly recommended.

Following the instructions of this formidable Miss Hu Tao, the two of them went to the Ghost Market at night. They used up half of Yin Ren’s savings to buy a single pill. Considering the need to keep the progress of their investigation as discreet as possible, they probably couldn’t submit a reimbursement for this item.

Gazing at the object, Yin Ren felt a strange mixture of gain and loss in his emotions.

The Nightwalkers gave it an elegant name, “Innocent Thoughts”. But according to Zhong Chengshuo’s summary, it was more like a “rationality-evaporating agent”. Unlike those “aphrodisiacs” that primarily targeted physical attraction, this potion was mainly used for psychological attraction.

In Hu Tao’s words, it could turn anyone into a youth brimming with vitality, consumed by the desire to live and die for love. While the user’s fondness for the object of their affection wouldn’t actually skyrocket, all other emotions, thoughts… even morals and principles would vanish.

Theoretically, the effect of this substance was permanent. For Lord Ghost King, it would take a minute to erase its magical influence. However, erasing aside, the process… there had to be a process.

The hand holding the pill trembled slightly. Zhong Chengshuo innocently blinked his eyes while his face was still expressionless.

“You were previously worried that your level of love wasn’t enough, so this will allow you to experience it,” Zhong Chengshuo said sincerely.

“You also said before that we didn’t need to use human emotions as a benchmark.” Yin Ren frowned and retorted. “Would anyone really give this thing to someone they liked? I think it’s more suitable for poisoning enemies.”

He really wanted to stuff it into Wei Huaqian’s mouth from Sunken Society, which seemed more useful.

The chocolate coating on the pill began to melt, but Yin Ren kept it far away from his mouth.

“You tested it on yourself before, so it will serve as a very useful reference. As long as we can gather data, our hypothesis can be properly verified,” Zhong Chengshuo said with a touch of earnestness in his tone.

Lord Ghost King sneered twice. “Zhong Chengshuo, why do I feel like you’re reveling in someone else’s misfortune?”

Zhong Chengshuo slowly turned his head, not answering.

Whether he advanced or retreated, he would still be in danger. As Yin Ren leisurely brought the pill to his lips, Zhong Chengshuo quickly turned his head back, and his eyes shined with curiosity.

This person rarely showed such vivid emotions. ‘If only this was in a different situation, that would be great,’ Yin Ren thought sorrowfully.

In the cozy living room, the two of them silently locked gazes. A desolate atmosphere lingered around Yin Ren, carrying a chilling sensation reminiscent of a cold river.

“This is a metaphysical item. It won’t work if I consume it,” Zhong Chengshuo heartlessly added.

“I know. I’ll take it. I’ll take it… Damn it, can this count as a work-related injury?”

Yin Ren’s throat choked with two sobs, and with his mouth open, he swallowed the pill the size of a malted milk ball.

Hu Tao floated in the air without moving, while Zhong Chengshuo sat on the couch like a stiff statue. Yin Ren stood in the center of the living room. His head was slightly bowed, and his long hair casually cascaded. After a long while, Yin Ren made a move. He slowly raised his face, but there was no obvious change in his expression.

“Is that it?” Hu Tao was greatly disappointed. “This thing cost nearly a hundred thousand yuan. What a waste of money.”

Unfortunately, Zhong Chengshuo couldn’t hear her complaints. He simply stared at Yin Ren, waiting for his reaction.

“No special reaction, huh?” After observing Zhong Chengshuo for quite some time, Yin Ren finally opened his mouth, sounding as if he had let out a sigh of relief. “It’s getting late. Let’s go to sleep.”

Zhong Chengshuo took out the wooden rabbit talisman. “Let’s test it first…”

“Why test it?” Yin Ren lightly said, “It’s already so late. You should pay attention to your health and not sleep so late.”

Zhong Chengshuo: “But—”

“Let’s sleep.” Yin Ren instantly teleported and appeared in front of Zhong Chengshuo. He held Zhong Chengshuo’s hands and smiled like a gentle spring breeze. “We can talk tomorrow.”

His crimson eyes sparkled in the lamplight, and Yin Ren’s tone carried a hint of the commanding authority typical of an elder. His hair gradually entwined around Zhong Chengshuo’s limbs, gently but irresistibly pulling him down onto the couch.

It was Yin Ren’s face, Yin Ren’s voice, but it didn’t feel like Yin Ren.

Those eyes were tender and fervent, yet apart from an overwhelming sense of love, there was nothing else.

Zhong Chengshuo never expected that even now, he could experience the uncanny valley effect with his lover. Instinctively, Zhong Chengshuo tightened his grip on the couch, feeling goosebumps rising on his back.

“What’s wrong?”

Bending down, Yin Ren raised one leg, knelt on the couch, and opened his arms, enveloping Zhong Chengshuo entirely.

“Aren’t you sleepy?” Yin Ren asked, then lightly kissed the corner of Zhong Chengshuo’s mouth.

Zhong Chengshuo blankly glanced at the empty living room. He had never longed for a little clairvoyance as much as he did now. After all, Miss Hu Tao was at least a teammate. At this moment, he could only struggle to hide himself within the couch. If it weren’t for the resilience of human bones, he would have wished to flatten himself like a pancake on the couch.

“Why are you hiding?”

Yin Ren furrowed his brows slightly, opened his mouth a little, revealing relatively sharp canine teeth. The tip of Yin Ren’s finger touched Zhong Chengshuo’s skin. It was a rough and warm sensation, but it sent shivers down Zhong Chengshuo’s spine.

“Yin Ren, I don’t like this.”

He nestled further into the couch.

“According to the plan, we need to gather data,” Zhong Chengshuo dryly stated.

“It’s just a few mortals. If they die, they die. They wouldn’t have lived long anyway,” Yin Ren casually replied. “Tomorrow, I’ll resume my normal work. I’ve already shown them some face… Now that you and I understand the situation, we don’t need to worry about them.”

He held Zhong Chengshuo tightly, as if hugging a large doll.

Zhong Chengshuo dared not move.

“Well… if you’re worried, we can hide your parents in a safe place. Then we can find a way to cause some trouble on the Other Side and look for Zhong Chengfeng. In this way, you can fulfill the wish, and then we can do whatever we want.”

Yin Ren chatted casually as his fingertip traced back and forth on Zhong Chengshuo’s tender neck.

“Do you like this plan?”

Zhong Chengshuo, always honest, replied, “I don’t like it. I’d rather test the data right now.”

It was simply terrifying. In this moment, he fully agreed with Yin Ren’s viewpoint. Such a cursed object should be used to poison enemies.

Zhong Chengshuo wanted to break free, but he didn’t want to attack Yin Ren. He could only forcefully shrink his head, attempting to squeeze out of Yin Ren’s embrace.

Yin Ren sat still on the couch, gradually revealing a deeply hurt expression.

“You used to be so indifferent to the mortal world.” He looked at Zhong Chengshuo in disbelief, his tone filled with sadness. “Do you consider work more important than me?”

“Hahaha!” Hu Tao couldn’t help but burst into laughter, rolling in the air. “Why didn’t I record this with my phone?”

Before Hu Tao could finish laughing, a beam of light grazed her ear, and the residual aura of magic was bone-chilling, carrying a warning from top to bottom. It felt as if something was gripping her throat, and Hu Tao’s laughter abruptly ceased.

In panic, she swiftly flew to the next room, not even staying for half a second.

“And you, what’s your answer?”

Yin Ren turned his face again, looking at Zhong Chengshuo, who seemed to want to stick himself to the wallpaper.

“Why don’t you want to go to the Other Side together? Is Shian really that important to you?” Yin Ren expressed with sadness. “Ah, I remember now. You even covered Huang Jin with a blanket… Do you really like him?”

After speaking, a faint killing intent actually emanated from Yin Ren’s surroundings.

“What’s wrong? Why aren’t you answering?” Yin Ren continued, “Forget it. It doesn’t matter. I will make him disappear. I know your personality. It definitely wouldn’t be your fault.”

As Yin Ren spoke, he laughed again.

His smile had never appeared so much like an “Evil Spirit”.

“You’re acting so unusual today; you must be too tired. Am I right? Let’s discuss it again tomorrow morning…”

Zhong Chengshuo took a deep breath and opened his arms. “Yin Ren.”

“Hmm?”

“Hug me,” Zhong Chengshuo said while hiding the wooden talisman in his sleeve and trying to maintain a calm expression.

Yin Ren’s eyes curved, and he walked gracefully towards Zhong Chengshuo. But just one step away from Zhong Chengshuo, he stopped.

“What are you hiding in your sleeve?” he asked gently. “Could it be that you want to use that wooden talisman to send me to the Other Side?”

Everyone’s Summer Cool-Down Routines

Another Qixi has come around, and our married couples are celebrating again.

Here are their little everyday tricks for beating the heat—

The weather kept getting hotter, and the AC at Shu Jun’s place basically never turned off. In a breezy tank top with an ice pop between his teeth, Shu Jun dashed around, keeping the heat perfectly locked outside the doors and windows.

Today, something went wrong.

The home AC broke, and the indoor temperature shot up. The cheer vanished from Shu Jun’s face; even the ice pop wouldn’t stay put—fresh out of the freezer, it melted into syrup in minutes, leaving the floor sticky.

Zhu Yanchen rolled up his sleeves and started fixing the unit on the spot. The room felt like a steamer; sweat soaked his hair and trickled down in drops.

Worse, there wasn’t just one problem. Marshal Zhu wiped his face. “Shu Jun, hand me the—”

He turned his head and found that Shu Jun was gone.

All the doors were open except the bathroom; he could see nearly every corner of the home. The bathroom was impossible too—Shu Jun, at heart, is still an Erosion Swamp; the only one who uses the bathroom here is Zhu Yanchen.

Even knowing Shu Jun would be fine, Zhu Yanchen felt a twinge of nerves. He climbed down the ladder and began searching everywhere.

Not behind the door, not in the wardrobe, not under the bed, not under the table…

After a thorough sweep, there was still no sign of Shu Jun. Zhu Yanchen grabbed a bottle of cold water from the fridge, about to resume the search, when he noticed the freezer door wasn’t properly shut.

And from the crack seeped an unusually deep darkness.

He pulled open the freezer and there was Mr. Shu, in erosion form, neatly squared off and wedged inside. The deep-freeze worked well; Shu Jun even felt a bit stiff to the touch.

Zhu Yanchen: “…”

The slightly stiff Erosion Swamp unhurriedly shifted back into human form and wrapped him in a big hug—it was icy cool that it was enough to make Zhu Yanchen shiver.

“Joints aren’t very flexible, but I can store plenty of cold.” Shu Jun hooked an arm around his neck, cheerfully declaring, “This way we both stay cool. Come on—let’s finish the repair.”

“…All right.”

Everyone’s Birthday Cakes

Congrats to the couple from “Help” on moving into the Married Zone ☆(/ω\)

This year’s 520 (May 20) mini-extra: couples celebrate their birthdays! It’s a perfect chance to compile everyone’s birthdays~

Zhu Yanchen: February 4th

Source: A normal birthday. (Start of Spring, 2020)

Cake: [Chessboard Cake]

A whimsical black-and-white grid cake made by Shu Jun, served with two boxes of chocolate chess pieces. Any piece you lose can be eaten in the literal sense, complete with a liqueur center.

If you win, you get to kiss the other. If you lose, you have to be kissed by the other. Very fair and square, and both of them give it their all amid the sweet aroma of cake.

※ Zhu Yanchen is especially fond of this cake, though it has one drawback: sometimes, when they get carried away playing, they absentmindedly take a bite out of a piece.

Shu Jun: August 7th

Source: An assigned birthday. (Start of Autumn, 2020)

Cake: [Blackbird Cake]

A chocolate cake steeped in memories. Zhu Yanchen adds a blackbird motif and balloon flowers. The texture is soft and gentle, Shu Jun’s favorite.

Shu Jun never shies away from his past and even uses the birthday that was once “assigned” to him. Only Grand Marshal Zhu still remembers everything about him and commemorates the past they share. This cake is the best proof.

※ Every time on Shu Jun’s birthday, Zhu Yanchen fills every corner of their home with fresh flowers. At first glance, their home looks like a warm field of flowers.

What to Do When You’re Stuck Together

Suddenly stuck together—what should you do?

A belated Valentine’s Day mini joke (?) story has arrived! Time for some sweet, sticky fluff ☆

Shu Jun discovered that their hands were stuck together.

Shu Jun turned into an Erosion Swamp.

…How were they still stuck together even in this Erosion form?!

Shu Jun, shaken, returned to human form and shook Zhu Yancheng awake. “We’re stuck! We’re stuck! Great expert, hurry and check what’s going on.”

In all his years, Zhu Yancheng had never been woken up while vibrating at high speed. He rubbed his eyes and carefully examined their joined hands.

“I’ve never seen anything like this either.”

Shu Jun hissed through his teeth. “I remember you have an important meeting today.”

And it wasn’t some regular university meeting—Zhu Yancheng was scheduled to attend a top-secret national-level meeting for internal personnel. Attendees were flying in from all over the country. Taking a day off would not go unnoticed.

“That’s right, it’s today.” Zhu Yancheng flipped through his calendar with one hand.

“Do we have time to get to the lab? What if this affects our health? What if I’ve mutated again?”

“If it were caused by you, I would definitely feel discomfort. My skin would show signs of illness.” Zhu Yancheng quickly reassured his lover. “See? There’s nothing wrong with the contact area, and all my physiological readings on the watch are normal.”

Only then did Shu Jun breathe a sigh of relief.

“But I still have to take a leave. I can’t attend a meeting in pajamas,” Zhu Yancheng tried to lighten the mood, but—

Shu Jun fully transformed into the Erosion Swamp, surged over, dragged Zhu Yancheng’s suit over, and enveloped him entirely, dressing him from head to toe.

Once it was done, Shu Jun slowly flowed out through the sleeve, returning to their hand-stuck state.

“All set.”

There was a hint of pride in Shu Jun’s voice. He reached up and straightened Zhu Yancheng’s collar. “It’s not a big deal—there’s always more solutions than problems.”

Zhu Yancheng, having just been wrapped entirely by his lover, had slightly reddened ears.

He quietly took a moment to compose himself. “The outfit is fine… but are you planning to come with me to the venue like this?”

Shu Jun thought for a moment, then rummaged through the closet and found Zhu Yancheng’s largest briefcase. Without hesitation, he compressed himself like mad—folding, folding again—and successfully stuffed himself inside.

Finally, he extended a small chunk of Erosion matter from the seam, gave a thumbs-up, and shrunk back inside.

Zhu Yancheng lifted the now very heavy briefcase, turned his head, and couldn’t help but chuckle.

That day, the meeting went extremely well.

But the legendary Marshal behaved very strangely—he kept carrying a black briefcase, his expression tightly controlled, hardly changing the whole time.

Occasionally, he would gently stroke the briefcase, as if lost in thought.

Some said it contained the trigger for a devastating weapon.

Some said it held a defensive Erosion sample…

As for the real truth—perhaps only Marshal Zhu himself knows.

Everyone’s Favorite Sports

A belated short story for Qixi Festival, with a little Olympic commemoration (*/ω\*)

Shu Jun: [Mixed Martial Arts]

As a combatant, Shu Jun received extensive training in various forms of martial arts. Among the many types of combat, Shu Jun personally prefers mixed martial arts.

After countless real battles, his mixed martial arts can’t be considered very orthodox, and he’s long forgotten the rules. But Shu Jun still loves this sport—going all out in a fight and then having a refreshing drink afterward feels incredibly satisfying.

Fortunately, he has the best sparring partner in the world. Zhu Yancheng is willing to have a proper match with him every weekend, and they both enjoy it thoroughly. Sometimes, though, their heated fights evolve into other activities… but that’s another story.

Zhu Yanchen: [Boxing]

Zhu Yanchen used to box to keep in shape. It doesn’t require much space—just a punching bag to hit, and it also helps relieve stress. Unfortunately, he practiced boxing back then only to improve his physical condition so that his severely damaged body could last a bit longer.

Now, he no longer needs to “exercise to live a few days longer” but has developed a habit of sparring with Shu Jun. When his once-numb fists strike out, they now bring a sense of vitality and joy.

In the past, he was very skilled at boxing, but he couldn’t say he “liked” it. Today, Zhu Yancheng is sure that he enjoys this sport.

How strange—Shu Jun always manages to make him like the world a little more.

Childhood Hairstyles

I suddenly wondered what everyone’s hairstyle was like when they were kids, so I’m sharing this on Children’s Day—

Consider it a little addition to the setting (〃ω〃)

Shu Jun: [Slightly Messy Short Hair]

No matter how neat his hairstyle was, it would always get messed up during practical training. Young Shu Jun thought that a slightly messy hairstyle looked fine too. He believed that as long as his hair was clean and fresh, the hairstyle didn’t matter much.

Zhu Yanchen: [Carefully Trimmed Medium-Length Hair]

As a child, he wasn’t valued at home and didn’t receive specialized training. His elders didn’t have high expectations for his appearance, so his hair was styled in the most convenient and conventional way, making him look especially gentle and harmless.

Everyone’s Favorite Fruits

This year’s Married Couple Day on 520* has arrived, so let’s write about everyone’s favorite fruits ☆

*The number 520 when pronounced in Chinese is very similar to [wǒ ài nǐ] (爱你) I love you. Due to this, it has become a day in China called “Internet Valentine’s Day”.

Congratulations to the couple from [Full Server First Kill] for entering the happy married zone (*/ω\*)

Shu Jun: [Orange]

Shu Jun never lacked fruit as a child, or rather, the virtual reality he lived in never lacked fruit. After entering [Erosion], the game only provided vitamin supplements. These supplements were nutritionally adequate but lacked any sense of fullness, so the [Erosion] officials also provided oranges.

These oranges were slightly darker in color, sweet, seedless, and had thicker skins than usual. They were said to be resistant to erosion and could be eaten directly after peeling. For combat personnel, this was the most convenient fruit.

Even now, Shu Jun still occasionally thought of those oranges. He remembered sharing the fruit with his comrades amid laughter and banter. Among countless gloomy memories, those were the most beautiful.

※ To Shu Jun, they were indelible memories.

Zhu Yanchen: [Lemon]

At first, Zhu Yanchen had little interest in food for three main reasons:

1. He was too busy and preferred to use nutrient supplements to maintain life functions.

2. His health was deteriorating, which naturally affected his appetite.

3. He felt he had no right to enjoy anything.

Unfortunately, to complete his research, he had to live as long as possible, which meant that Zhu Yanchen had to occasionally supplement his diet with fresh, normal food. So Zhu Yanchen chose lemons as his fruit of choice. He used them to make lemon water, drinking the sour water that tasted like a corner of his mind burned into his memory.

※ To Zhu Yanchen, they were memories he couldn’t abandon.

~~~
“Honey… soda water…”
Shu Jun held a recipe in one hand, carefully following the instructions. In the glass jug, a layer of ice floated on top, beneath it a slightly whitish, bubbly, semi-transparent liquid. “The lemon ratio is just right this time. There’s no way it’ll go wrong!”
He muttered to himself as he poured himself a glass—cool, refreshing, with the sweetness and sourness perfectly balanced. The fizzy texture of the soda made this batch exceptionally perfect!
Research wasn’t easier than battle. The honey lemon water he made before was either too sour, too sweet, or too bland, with the bitterness of the soda overpowering the flavor. This successful attempt should make for a nice surprise today.
He placed the frosty glass jug on the dining table, the clinking of the ice cubes pleasant to the ear, as a thin layer of condensation formed on the glass. The fruit bowl next to the jug was filled with bright, enticing tangerines.
Shu Jun yawned and lay down next to the fruit bowl, watching the ice cubes melt and collide in the jug. Zhu Yanchen would be home from work soon, and then they would discuss the dinner menu and head into the kitchen.
A peaceful and joyful day was always like this.
Couple’s Pajama Party
Valentine’s Day, of course, calls for a grand pajama reveal (?
And favorite intimate acts (???
~Shu Jun~
[Loose shorts] Breathable loose black athletic shorts, made from the same synthetic material as sportswear. Mr. Shu doesn’t like wearing tops to sleep.
※ Sometimes sleeps so soundly that he might slide off the bed, leaving only a pair of shorts.
~Zhu Yanchen~
[Cotton pajama set] A pullover white pajama shirt and white pajama pants, very homely. Marshal Zhu’s first action upon waking is to check for any black on his body to see if his lover had disassembled in sleep.
[Standard boxer briefs] in gray, relatively cheap. He’s accustomed to wearing it.
※ Though it’s a pullover pajama, it can still be put on/taken off in two seconds.
Whether sleeping or taking a walk, interlocking fingers is the best! Both enjoy the sense of security this action brings. As soon as one reaches out, the other quickly appears to grasp firmly.
In fact, Zhu Yanchen’s hand is slightly larger than Shu Jun’s, which Mr. Shu refuses to admit.
Magical Summoning Abilities
New Year’s Mysterious Magic☆ Couple Summoning Technique~10 Seconds Guaranteed~ The effect is magical, comparable to spatial teleportation!
Zhu Yanchen’s magic: Frown, the kind of frowning when feeling unwell.
Magic effect: Shu Jun appears in a whoosh, claws pressing on his forehead.
※ Even if it was just a cough from choking on his spit.
Shu Jun’s magic: Send any message to Zhu Yanchen; even just a comma works.
Magic effect: As long as Marshal Zhu isn’t in a meeting at school, he will definitely call for a warm chat.
※ If in a meeting, they’ll text instead.
Got A Pumpkin
~Zhu Yanchen’s Pumpkin~
As soon as Shu Jun returned home, he was startled by the various pumpkin lamps all over the house.
Suppressing his shock, he estimated that their small house now had at least twenty grotesquely shaped jack-o’-lanterns. Zhu Yanchen was still in the kitchen, carving yet another pumpkin.
Shu Jun: “Marshal Zhu… our Halloween atmosphere is already more than enough…”
Zhu Yanchen paused. “But I want to create the perfect smile.”
Shu Jun sighed, went over to Zhu Yanchen, and kissed his nose. Zhu Yanchen was momentarily stunned, then smiled unconsciously.
“See? A perfect smile,” Shu Jun said.
※ The extra jack-o’-lanterns were made into pumpkin pies and were frozen on the second shelf of the fridge.
~Shu Jun’s Pumpkin~
Before leaving work, Shu Jun bought a bouquet of cute round pumpkins from a flower shop.
These dried flowers last a long time and were perfect for Zhu Yanchen’s study. Thinking about it, something seemed missing…
After work, he filled a vase with milk candies and then placed the pumpkin bouquet inside. Setting it right under Zhu Yanchen’s nose in the study, he wondered how long it would take for Marshal Zhu to notice the candies.
An hour, two hours? The next day?
He was anticipating his surprised expression!
…A week later, Shu Jun stormed into Zhu Yanchen’s study. In front of his lover, he took a candy from the vase, unwrapped it aggressively, and forced it into the other’s mouth.※ “I’ll definitely look inside the vase next time,” Marshal Zhu repeatedly assured. “You caught my blind spot. Well played.”
Late Mid-Autumn Festival? National Day? Short joke~(*/ω\*)
Everyone’s Belongings
~Zhu Yanchen’s personal items~
◆ Ink-filled fountain pen and notebook: Marshal Zhu always likes to jot down miscellaneous matters and plans, as does Professor Zhu.
※ The fountain pen was a birthday gift specially picked by Shu Jun, and he has never replaced it.
◆ Supermarket shopping receipts: Even though they’re not short on money, household bills still need to be settled to his satisfaction.
※ He has mastered the list of 100 things that Shu Jun likes to eat.
◆ Bellflower tie clip: A custom-made accessory. Made of platinum and diamonds, its design is exquisite yet understated and is quite valuable.
※ This was Shu Jun’s idea, a small memento for their 100th wedding anniversary.
~Shu Jun’s personal items~
◆ Erosion elimination spray: Specially made by Zhu Yanchen, used to eliminate evidence in certain situations (?)
※ “I’ll try to use it sparingly, I promise!” Shu Jun sincerely said.
◆ Smart bracelet disguised as a mechanical watch: Specially made by Zhu Yanchen, it can monitor Shu Jun’s health condition in all aspects.
※ “As a birthday gift, this item… well, is truly thoughtful.” Shu Jun wore it on the spot.
◆ Bellflower bracelet: A custom-made accessory. Made of platinum and diamonds, strung with a low-key black cord, worn together with the bracelet.
※ This was Zhu Yanchen’s idea, a small commemoration for their 100th wedding anniversary.
Qixi Scheduled! Perfect to rate everyone’s culinary skills~☆
~Shu Jun’s Culinary Skills ~
Overall rating: ★★★☆
Strengths: Pretty good among ordinary people. Don’t have too high expectations for humanoid weapons.
Weaknesses: Just lacks experience, but he’s earnestly learning.
※ Marshal Zhu: “He’s too hard on himself.”
~Zhu Yanchen’s Culinary Skills~
Overall rating: ★★★
Strengths: Given an accurate recipe, he can produce perfect dishes.
Weaknesses: There aren’t many accurate recipes in this world. Descriptions like “moderate” or “a pinch” are too vague and can easily lead to disasters.
※ Shu Jun: “See that shelf? It’s full of recipes written by someone…”
Indulging in “Tears of the Kingdom” led to postponement of the mini… A small corner of everyone’s daily life!
“It doesn’t seem like his doing. I’ve seen many young people who vandalize public property, but… his eyes, they’re different,” a police officer remarked.
“It was Monday yesterday. The Zhu Yanchen Memorial Park was locked. He was the only one at the scene. Didn’t he refuse to explain himself?” another countered.
“But the surveillance was tampered with, and there were no witnesses. He could argue he wandered into the park after the damage was done. ‘Strolling by the sea in the morning’ isn’t illegal.”
“We’ll definitely have to release him, as days go by… Oh, here comes his partner.”
On the other side…
“It’s okay, they have no evidence,” Shu Jun explained. “Besides, if someone had the capability to interfere with all the surveillance, there’s no need to target just the statue.”
The subject of the destroyed statue, Zhu Yanchen, rubbed his temples. “Be serious. What you’re saying is dangerous.”
“I’ve always been dangerous,” Shu Jun responded listlessly.
“So, what really happened? If it wasn’t you, we can intervene and investigate…”
“It was me.”
“…?” The former Marshal Zhu was stunned for a moment.
“Let’s say it was technically me.” Shu Jun coughed twice. “Didn’t we talk on the phone for a long time yesterday?”
“Yes.”
Zhu Yanchen had returned home from a trip yesterday. Before arriving home, the two had talked for almost four hours. Zhu Yanchen vaguely remembered that Shu Jun had hung up rather abruptly.
“I was walking Monday at the time,” Shu Jun said, diverting his gaze.
To monitor Monday’s condition, Zhu Yanchen and Shu Jun “walked the dog” periodically. Of course, they had specifically forbidden Monday from approaching any human-inhabited areas.
Unfortunately, the memorial park was closed yesterday, making it a perfect spot.
Zhu Yanchen’s expression gradually went blank.
“I was on the phone with you for a long time, and it got… bored, I guess. It played around a bit too vigorously. I lost focus for a moment…”
“It deviated from its route,” Zhu Yanchen filled in.
“It deviated from its route, trampled through almost half the park. I had to stay and clean up the mess.”
“…”
“In any case, I’ll leave for now. Donate anonymously to cover the damage, and then… Are you mad?”
“No, just thinking.”
“About what?”
“From now on, let’s walk it together.”
A belated Valentine’s Day mini: Everyone’s game preference.
~Shu Jun’s Gaming Preferences~
Occupation Choice: Main Tank, Warrior class.
Gaming Tendency: Casual player with exceptional gaming skills. Enjoys the gaming process, likes PVE, and only chooses Zhu Yanchen as an opponent in PVP.
Teaming Tendencies: Quite warm towards in-game teammates. Has an astonishing leadership quality, often inexplicably becoming the team leader.
※Sometimes he and Zhu Yanchen will each join random teams, comparing the time it takes to clear dungeons. The one who loses has to cook.
~Zhu Yanchen’s Gaming Preferences~
Occupation Choice: Main Tank, Knight class.
Gaming Tendency: Casual player who treats games as a normal means of relaxation, but will switch games following Shu Jun.
Teaming Tendencies: Doesn’t talk much in-game, but gives very precise commands, and often becomes the leader without any apparent reason.
※Currently, the win-loss record with Shu Jun is still balanced. When they team up, he voluntarily switches to a DPS role.
Tanabata, Tanabata, everyone’s outfit special edition~
~Action~
The two of them will put on night combat uniforms that are completely identical in style.
The tight black material accentuates their figures, and they always take a few minutes to admire each other before they act.
※ Sometimes they even touch each other.
~Daily Life~
Shu Jun:
[White casual jacket with black long-sleeve T-shirt] The white fabric has a slightly dark shade and a slightly stiff texture. Shu Jun likes to wear an additional metal ID tag as a pendant.
[Dark gray jeans] The fabric has a rough texture, but it is resistant to dirt and abrasion, which Shu Jun quite likes.
[Suede Martens boots] Not as sturdy as combat boots, but still gives him a sense of familiarity from his memories.
※ Zhu Yanchen made two sets of ID tags—metal tags with their names closely engraved. “This is a set so they can’t be separated,” Marshal Zhu expressed.
Zhu Yanchen:
[Camel V-neck sweater with white shirt] It covers Mr. Marshal’s sturdy physique very well, giving a refined appearance.
[Deep brown trousers] Neat and without any wrinkles.
[Brown leather shoes] Always polished to a shine. The soft color hides any sharpness.
※ “It’s much softer than the uniforms we used to wear. It looks like caramel.” To verify his idea, Shu Jun kissed his lover’s lips.
Valentine’s Day Album, Inexplicable Nightmare Feature
When Zhu Yanchen woke up, he found that the bed next to him was completely cold.
Shu Jun had kept his habit of waking up early as a soldier, but he would always linger in bed a little longer. This morning, however, he got up briskly, which was a bit unusual.
But Zhu Yanchen didn’t rush to find out—even if there was a nuclear explosion, Shu Jun would survive. He turned on the stereo in the living room and started cooking while listening to music. Being in a relationship always required some space, and regardless, Shu Jun would never miss breakfast.
Sure enough, while he was slow-frying canned meat, Shu Jun rushed in from behind in a flurry with the tips of his erosion claws still leaking.
“So fragrant. I can smell it from outside.”
Shu Jun was still wearing his pajamas, and as usual, the buttons were not properly fastened. He leaned in next to Zhu Yanchen and took a strong sniff.
“What are we having for breakfast? Is it served with porridge or pancakes?”
“It’s getting cold, so it’s noodle soup.” Marshal Zhu glanced at him. “Why is your whole body covered in dirt?”
Shu Jun retracted his claws and scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly. “Uh, well, I didn’t sleep well last night, so I got up early to play with Monday.”
Zhu Yanchen paused in his actions, wiped his hands on his apron, and his expression became serious.
When he spoke again, his voice carried a hint of nervousness. “You didn’t sleep well last night? …Are you feeling unwell? Go wash your face, and I’ll give you a thorough examination right away.”
Seeing Zhu Yanchen about to turn off the stove, Shu Jun panicked. He grabbed Zhu Yanchen’s wrist and said, “No need, sir. It’s nothing serious. I just… had a nightmare. It’s not that serious. I was actually looking forward to eating noodles.”
“…Really?”
“I wouldn’t lie to you,” Shu Jun said earnestly. “Embarrassing as it sounds, I dreamed that Monday went completely out of control, and the seawater and coastline were contaminated again. I woke up in the middle of the night, so I went out and gave it some extra training… You see, today is Valentine’s Day. We’re supposed to have a date during the day.”
Zhu Yanchen fell silent.
“It sounds silly, doesn’t it? Let’s not talk about it anymore. Let’s eat first. I want three sunny-side-up eggs.”
“It does sound silly.” Zhu Yanchen smiled and shook his head. “But it’s also quite interesting. Next time, remember to invite me along as well. We can consider it a date activity.”
Still, he felt a little sorry for Monday, so when they come back from their date, they should give it some extra erosion candy.
Chinese New Year Extra, Everyone’s Signature Dish♪
Once again, I wish everyone a prosperous Year of the Tiger —! 🎉
~Zhu Yanchen’s Signature Dish~
Roasted lamb leg: The lamb leg is roasted to have crispy skin and tender meat, with a burst of fragrant oil when you take a bite. It can be a bit troublesome to roast and requires some skill to slice. However, in front of the former marshal, none of this is a problem. After all, compared to other dishes, his lover still prefers this straightforward and hearty meat dish.
※ Shu Jun does enjoy it. He can eat quite a lot. But considering the family’s financial situation, he converts some of his appetite into other desires.
Sugar milk wine: A specially crafted blended wine by Marshal Zhu, best enjoyed when heated. The milk wine has a refreshing and smooth taste with a hint of sweetness, and its alcohol content is very low. The two of them will drink it while playing battle games, just like they did on their first sleepover.
※ Unfortunately, the quantity of milk wine is limited. After finishing the drink, they will stick a note on each other’s faces to record the victory or defeat.
~Shu Jun’s Signature Dishes~
Winter melon pork rib soup: It has a light and non-greasy flavor, and the pork ribs are stewed to be incredibly tender. It’s Zhu Yanchen’s favorite soup. After trying it once, Shu Jun also fell in love with the taste. Every time he makes it, he adds plenty of pork ribs. According to Marshal Zhu, at least in this soup, Shu Jun’s culinary skills have surpassed their family’s former chef.
※ The leftover bones can all be given to Monday.
Carrot bread: It’s nutritious, soft, and delicious, which Shu Jun really enjoys. Sometimes he even substitutes it for staple food. However, Zhu Yanchen prefers using it for breakfast, slicing it and filling it with fried eggs and lettuce.
※ “It tastes great like this. You can try adding some meat,” Marshal Zhu sincerely suggested.
Halloween Extra. Struggling and Slacking Off at Work 🎃
As the erosion era gradually faded away, it left behind a series of commemorative holidays.
One of these holidays fell in early winter, where people would dress up as various terrifying creatures from legends to ward off potential contamination and disasters. With world order restored, what used to be a lighthearted celebration had turned into a full-fledged carnival, especially in places where young people gathered.
Inside Y City University, a reporter who came to cover the event immediately spotted two targets.
One of them was dressed in an old-fashioned uniform, standing tall with a pale yet handsome face. The other had white hair and silver eyes, exuding a beast-like elegance. Wearing well-fitted combat armor that seemed valuable, they looked nothing like props for the holiday. Amidst the rough and crude costumes worn by others, these two individuals seemed like specks of gold in a gravel field.
The reporter approached them with a cheerful smile. “Hello, you two students. I’m a reporter from Y City TV. It seems like you’ve chosen historical figures to portray. May I ask why you made this choice?”
“Zhu Yanchen” and “Shu Jun” were important figures in modern history and were known to everyone. For some reason, clear photos of the two of them weren’t included in textbooks, so people remembered their outfits instead.
“It’s not ‘you two students’. This is Professor Zhu, my lover. As for me, I’m just accompanying him.”
“Apologies, both of you look quite young.”
“We do have a youthful appearance.” The young man portraying “Shu Jun” laughed heartily.
“We didn’t specifically choose the roles,” “Zhu Yanchen” answered seriously. “Our department organized a costume lottery, and I happened to draw ‘Leader Zhu’.”
“I see. That’s an interesting activity.”
“What do you think? Do we resemble them?” “Shu Jun” asked.
“Your portrayal of ‘Shu Jun’ is quite accurate, but Professor Zhu’s ‘Zhu Yanchen’ seems… His temperament is too gentle. It’s not cold enough.”
“Exactly, A’Yan is not a cold person.” “Shu Jun” embraced his lover’s shoulder with an evident smile in his eyes and lips. The latter sighed and gently kissed “Shu Jun” on the cheek.
The reporter continued professionally, “As accompanying family members, you don’t need to dress up. Why did you choose to do so?”
“Shu Jun” smiled even brighter. “Because ‘Zhu Yanchen’ cannot be without ‘Shu Jun’ by his side.”
“Zhu Yanchen” also smiled.
“That’s indeed the case,” he said.
How can we miss the Qixi Festival! Let’s write about everyone in the eyes of passersby (?
Time is filled with work, still searching for moments to write ʕ ; ᴥ ; ʔ
@A researcher at a certain technical institute/Female/31 years old
“Officer, I didn’t drink or take any drugs… What I said is all true.”
“Yesterday, I was on the night shift and didn’t leave for home until 4 in the morning. At that time, I wasn’t feeling well and was in a hurry to get home and rest, so I took a shortcut. Yes, it was the edge of the erosion zone… When I was grabbed by the hair, I was completely stunned. That person forcefully dragged me towards the erosion zone… I broke up with him a long time ago and haven’t had any contact for half a year! He’s just a lunatic!”
“After realizing what was happening, I… I panicked. It was 4 in the morning, and there were no residential areas nearby. There was no chance anyone would hear my cries for help. I thought it was over; that I would be killed by that bastard. But then, before I could even call for help, a black thing came rushing over and lifted him up by the waist. Black… I don’t really know how to describe it. Tentacles? Tails? Roughly the thickness of a bowl. The fog was so dense around that I didn’t know where it came from. It tied that scumbag up tightly and knocked him unconscious on the ground.”
“A person? I did see a figure, hidden in the fog. I could only see the silhouette. Hmm, it was probably a man—a young man. I heard him speak, and his voice was very pleasant. No, he didn’t speak to me. He said, ‘Next time we have a date, we need to clean up the nearby trash first’… And then—then he kissed that strange black thing. Although I could only make out the silhouette, I could still see the movements!”
“A voice responded cheerfully, ‘Yes, sir,’ but I didn’t see anyone else. I—I seized the opportunity and escaped. That’s how it all happened. What about that scumbag? Has he been locked up? I hope he has…”
“…Afraid? No, I’m not afraid. I’m actually grateful to them.”
A plain and ordinary daily routine. Everyone’s day schedule♪
~Shu Jun’s Day Schedule~
08:00-12:00: Escort Zhu Yanchen to work at the university, then return home to command Monday to clean up the dust and garbage in the house. After watching an action movie, Shu Jun changes into formal attire and heads to the cafeteria at the Environmental Protection Bureau.
12:00-17:00: Monitor for any anomalies at the Environmental Protection Bureau office. There are no sudden erosion incidents today, so there is no need for fieldwork at the moment.
17:00-18:00: Rush to the university to pick up Professor Zhu. They leisurely stroll back home together without hurriedly taking a ride.
18:00-20:00: Enjoyable dinner time. The two of them always cook together and have conversations. Today, they made a delicious and fragrant stew. Zhu Yanchen’s culinary skills have improved quite a bit.
20:00-00:00: Play a strategy command game for two solid hours. Currently, Shu Jun’s record is 18,354 wins and 18,355 losses. Today, he added another loss, so he’ll be responsible for feeding Monday before bed. As a small act of revenge, Mr. Shu almost suffocates his lover with a passionate kiss.
~Zhu Yanchen’s Daily Schedule~
08:00-08:30: Driven to the university by Shu Jun. Shu Jun has a special enthusiasm for driving, and Zhu Yanchen happily goes along with it.
08:00-17:00: Teach history at the university. More than a hundred years have passed since the erosion era, but the two of them still look the same. Only a few people know about their situation, and today Zhu Yanchen received another “secret re-employment request”, but former Leader Zhu clearly stated that he has no intention of returning to politics.
17:00-18:00: Stroll back home with Shu Jun. A smile, forever young, adorns Zhu Yanchen’s face. He spends more time observing the person than admiring the scenery. Strange, even after so many years, he can never get enough.
18:00-20:00: Enjoyable dinner time. Zhu Yanchen cooked a stew he just learned, and Shu Jun ate it all up.
20:00-00:00: Zhu Yanchen wins the game over Shu Jun by a narrow margin. Frustrated by his loss, Shu Jun sulks for a while, then fiercely kisses Zhu Yanchen. Perhaps they can conquer other territories together in a different place; after all, the night is still young.
“Don’t go, Grand Marshal. Let me hold you for a little longer. I can help you read your student papers.”
“It’s not too late to review them tomorrow morning.”
Valentine’s Day Chocolate Special🍫
[Slightly deformed chocolate square melted by body heat ×1]
Made by: Zhu Yanchen
Item description:
Despite being a top-notch researcher, this was Zhu Yanchen’s first attempt at making chocolate. He accidentally added too much sugar and was about to make adjustments when he got caught up in a day-long leadership meeting. The young leader kept them close to his chest, and before giving them away, he discreetly broke off a piece to taste.
As expected, it was still too sweet. Mr. Zhu felt anxious for the first time.
[Chocolate lava cake ×1]
Made by: Shu Jun
Item description:
Thinking that this would suit his lover’s taste, Shu Jun gave it a try and unexpectedly succeeded.
Zhu Yanchen didn’t like overly sweet flavors, so Shu Jun didn’t add much sugar. The cake turned out a bit bitter, more than he had anticipated… A bit challenging.
Later, Mr. Shu realized he had been overly worried—when paired with the chocolate his partner had given, the sweetness was just right.
There’s no holiday today, but I thought about it and wrote something. Let’s sleep together extra. _(:D”∠)_
Zhu Yanchen remembered it clearly. When they were young, he and Shu Jun would lean on each other to sleep, peaceful and content.
Now that they had been living together for a long time, they still held onto that sense of security, but if you were to talk about being peaceful…
Mr. Zhu let out a silent sigh as he looked down at the empty bed—Shu Jun must have had a nightmare again and turned into erosion in the middle of the night, sticking Zhu Yanchen and the blankets to the ceiling.
Even in an unconscious state, Shu Jun’s actions were gentle. At first, Zhu Yanchen didn’t notice, continuing to sleep soundly. However, when he stretched out his arm, trying to embrace the person by his side, his arm swung empty, and he woke up with a startle.
Shu Jun was leaning next to Zhu Yanchen with his eyes tightly shut and a slight frown on his forehead. The lower part of his body had transformed into erosion vines, spreading across the entire ceiling, assuming a defensive posture. Zhu Yanchen instinctively reached out his hand, gently stroking along Shu Jun’s spine and kneading the back of his neck. Shu Jun’s tense body finally relaxed, and his eyebrows smoothed out. He slowly returned to the bed with Zhu Yanchen.
The dark erosion gradually receded, returning to Shu Jun’s slender legs. A few scattered clusters remained, affectionately winding around Zhu Yanchen’s ankles and calves. One of them even crawled up the pillow, rubbing against Zhu Yanchen’s cheek.
Zhu Yanchen kissed the wriggling erosion. He reached out his hand once again and happily embraced Shu Jun as he had hoped.
It was just another ordinary night.
Belated Qixi Festival Extra, Pet Special
Blackbirds Town was a small town with a peaceful atmosphere.
The Erosion Swamps collectively migrated into the sea, causing most people to have a shadow over coastal living. Those who lived here were mostly former members of the Blackbirds and their descendants. The population of the town was sparse, and the environment was fresh and pleasant. Every blade of grass exuded a lazy smell. However, there were too few people willing to come, and the town’s economy had never been able to recover, resulting in various inconveniences in daily life.
On a certain night…
Monday happily floated to the water’s surface and wobbled towards the nearest cliff. It rested its head on the edge of the stone square. “Hungry—”
“Lower your voice.” Shu Jun carried a bucket full of erosion candy and wiped his face. “The children from the nearby houses are back from vacation. Don’t let them find out.”
Monday paid no attention and stared fixedly at the erosion candy, leaning against the cliff and rolling around, saying, “Candy!”
“It seems like the new Sigma is quite energetic.” Zhu Yanchen put on his coat and walked out of the back door.
“Too energetic.” Shu Jun sighed. “You go back first, A’Yan. I’ll finish feeding this thing and then go back to bed.”
Zhu Yanchen smiled meaningfully, and Shu Jun stifled a yawn. “My Marshal, what secret plan have you come up with this time?”
“It’s temporarily classified.” Zhu Yanchen lightly kissed the corner of Shu Jun’s mouth and deftly scooped out a spoonful of erosion candy, accurately flicking it into Monday’s mouth.
Monday made a contented purring sound, rolling along the edge of the cliff, completely unaware that several children with cameras stood tens of meters away, staring in disbelief.
“What that big brother said is true!” They whispered to each other. “So cool!”
Several months later…
Blackbirds Town was still that peaceful little town. It was just that there was a terrifying legend in the town—every full moon night, an erosion monster would appear in the sea, and people must stay away from the coast. But in response, there would always be a mysterious defender who would repel the monster, so there was no need to worry.
Tourists gradually increased, and everyone wanted to see the monster under the moonlight with their own eyes. Unfortunately, the couple on the cliff bought the surrounding land, making it inaccessible for tourists, who could only gaze at the sea from afar.
Those two really lack business acumen, the people thought.
Chapter 121: Explosion Accident
“Activate the hibernation chamber?”
“We have negotiated the terms with X City, and there are no issues with the keys.”
“I object. The hibernation chamber has been in operation for nearly a hundred years, and its risks must be thoroughly evaluated. The difference between the original Erosion Swamp and the current Erosion Jellyfish is significant. There are hardly any Erosion Jellyfish on land, and the general population has little tolerance…”
“That’s why we need to activate the hibernation chamber.”
“What do you mean?”
“The chamber contains the preserved Erosion Swamp from that era, which is highly suitable for use as a biological weapon. With the presence of the suppression rifles, there won’t be a repeat of the leakage incidents from the apocalypse era…”
“Furthermore, by releasing the Erosion Swamp onto unprepared target cities and cleaning up the battlefield with suppression rifles, the land can be immediately reclaimed and reused. ‘Biological contamination’ is easier to handle than actual radiation. The situation near N City has been tense recently, and you know the importance of powerful new weapons.”
“There are no dissenters in X City?”
“No. After several generations of intermarriage, the concept of ‘synthetic humans’ is virtually non-existent. X City is our most steadfast ally.”
“Okay. Tang Kuo, you will be in charge of the hibernation chamber. I have a few more proposals over here…”
After the meeting ended, Tang Kuo felt uneasy. Instead of joining his colleagues for lunch, he silently distanced himself from the crowd while his thoughts spun in his mind.
Nearly a hundred years ago, the synthetic human uprising erupted, and leader Zhu Yanchen turned the tide, saving human civilization from the clutches of Sigma. Guided by various forces, the Erosion Swamp migrated to the deeper sea, where they found a more suitable form of existence and gained a more stable means of survival.
They absorbed more water and gradually transformed into the “Erosion Jellyfish”, which had less impact on the environment. Living a comfortable lifestyle, they no longer desired to gather into Erosive Swamps, and the original Erosion Swamps almost disappeared.
…Except for Shu Jun.
The Erosion Swamp within Shu Jun’s body remained unchanged. It hadn’t received the latest information and still possessed strong erosive properties.
In the past, Shu Jun had slept as a “safeguard” for the coexistence of humans and synthetic humans. However, in the present era of integration between the two, Shu Jun’s existence became awkward. If possible, Tang Kuo wished for this warrior to sleep forever.
But he also understood that he alone couldn’t prevent the higher-ups of the United Government from using his brain.
The era of rapid human development was far from over, and the population was exploding. People’s pockets were bulging, and their thoughts went beyond just having enough to eat and sleep. Subtle conflicts began to arise. Some troublemakers, emboldened by their power and influence, started to disobey the governance of the United Government and attempted to “reign” in their own territories.
Honestly, Tang Kuo had no objections to punishing these individuals. However, as a researcher, he disagreed with bringing back the original Erosion Swamp to the human world.
Erosion substance wasn’t a plaything for humans; humans had been destroyed by it once due to their negligence. Who knew if things would go awry this time?
Sighing, Tang Kuo strolled to the Zhu Rong Memorial Hall. He sat there for the entire afternoon, but his mood wasn’t brightened by the warm lighting. Seeing more and more people at the memorial hall, he drooped the corners of his mouth and drove to the outskirts cemetery.
He needed a quiet environment to sort out his thoughts.
Dark clouds filled the sky, and it wasn’t even six o’clock yet, but the surroundings were as black as the dead of night. The cemetery deep in the distance was cold and silent—buried here were people who had passed away decades ago, and hardly anyone came to mourn.
Tang Kuo found Tang Heyu’s tombstone and sat down in front of it.
“Great-great-great-grandfather… Well, I don’t even know how to address you.” Tang Kuo rubbed the loose soil on the stone pathway with his fingertips while muttering to himself. “Zhu Yanchen, Xia Liang, Ai Zhichun… so many leaders worked hard to restore the city to what it is now. And the result? Haa, I can accept doing medical research, but creating new weapons is a bit…”
“You people of your generation suffered greatly because of the Erosion Swamp. If you knew what we were planning, you’d probably jump out of your graves in anger.”
“What if Shu Jun wakes up…”
Tang Kuo was in the middle of talking to himself when he suddenly stopped. It was already late in the day, and this was an old cemetery of nearly a hundred years. Yet, footsteps could be heard not far away—judging by the sound, there wasn’t just one person approaching.
What in the world?
Driven by the inherent curiosity of a researcher, Tang Kuo stood up and quietly moved towards the direction of the sound. Two men stood in front of another tombstone, engaged in a hushed conversation.
The two men appeared to be in their thirties, dressed casually yet tastefully, with fabrics that were clearly not cheap. However, if one were to say that they were descendants of a prominent family paying respects to their elders, something felt off—the two visitors were carrying fresh vegetables and meat in their hands, giving off the impression that they had just purchased them. The slightly taller man held a bouquet of white flowers, adding a touch of condolence to the atmosphere.
If it weren’t for being in the depths of a century-old cemetery, the scene before Tang Kuo would resemble children from an ordinary family mourning their parents.
After their conversation concluded, the taller man placed the bouquet of flowers in front of the tombstone and said a few more words. From his angle, Tang Kuo could see the man’s face clearly.
He hitched his breath.
That person was quite handsome, with features that were quite similar to Zhu Yanchen. Unlike the iron-fist leader, this person gave off a rather gentle vibe, lacking the cold hardness that kept people at a distance like Zhu Yanchen did.
A member of the Zhu family?
Tang Kuo mentally went through the names of the Zhu family members he knew, and he was certain he hadn’t seen this person before. Just based on the face that resembled Zhu Yanchen’s so much, if he had seen them before, he wouldn’t have forgotten.
Most likely, he was a distant relative of the Zhu family who didn’t touch on political affairs.
With that thought, Tang Kuo lost interest again. He only wanted to focus on his research and had no desire to cozy up to people just because they happened to cross paths. However, as he was about to leave, dark clouds rumbled overhead, and heavy rain poured down.
Tang Kuo cursed under his breath and hurried back to his car. After struggling for a while, he was soaked through, but the car showed no signs of starting.
Researcher Tang was on the verge of rolling his eyes. When a person’s luck turned sour, even drinking cold water became a challenge*—first, he received the task of activating the hibernation chamber, then he came to the cemetery to clear his mind, and in the middle of it all, he was interrupted. Now, as he was about to leave, he encountered heavy rain and a vehicle malfunction.
*Expression referring to when things are going wrong or someone is experiencing a streak of bad luck, even simple and ordinary actions can become problematic or result in additional inconveniences. It basically describes a situation where everything seems to go wrong for someone.
Today was definitely his unlucky day.
Even if he called for help, he would have to wait for an hour or two. Tang Kuo had been preoccupied with the hibernation chamber since noon, unable to focus on anything else. Now he had a rumbling stomach, was shivering in his wet clothes, and wished he could shed a few tears.
Sniffing, Tang Kuo bent down, searching in his car, hoping to find some forgotten food in a corner. However, he couldn’t find any food, but he did hear a series of knocks on the car window.
Realizing he was in an empty cemetery, Tang Kuo’s scalp tingled. He abruptly straightened up, hitting the back of his head on the steering wheel, and his eyes welled up with tears.
Through the wet car window, he could just barely make out the person knocking on the window—it was the same person he had encountered in the cemetery, holding an umbrella and carrying groceries.
That person had gray-white hair, slightly darker skin, and warm brown eyes. They wore a friendly smile, motioning for Tang Kuo to roll down the window.
Rubbing his painful head, Tang Kuo hesitated for a moment. Considering he had no money on him, and the car wouldn’t budge, he ultimately obediently rolled down the car window.
“You seemed quite anxious just now. I took the liberty to check on your car. Sorry about that.” The person’s smile was quite cheerful. “To be honest, your car won’t be fixed anytime soon. Even if you call for a mechanic, they will have to tow it back to the city for repairs.”
Tang Kuo’s face showed a pained numbness.
“You don’t seem to be in good shape either,” the person continued sincerely. “We were just about to leave here. How about you come with us for now? It’s getting late, and you can figure out what to do with this matter tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” Tang Kuo grinned and forced out a smile. “It’s not a big problem. Even if I can’t make it in time, I can spend the night in the car. I—”
Before he could finish his sentence, his stomach let out a thunderous rumble. Tang Kuo awkwardly stopped talking and let out an awkward laugh.
“Our house is by the seaside, in Blackbirds Town.” The man clearly saw through Tang Kuo’s vigilance and lowered his voice. “You look like a researcher from the command center, so you probably have a tracking chip implanted, right? If you’re still worried, you can report our vehicle code to your family.”
At this point, Tang Kuo felt too embarrassed to refuse. He locked his own car and briefly informed his roommate of the situation before getting into the other person’s car.
“I brought him back, A’Yan.” The man left Tang Kuo in the backseat. “Prepare dinner for one more person. Do we have enough ingredients at home?”
The man, who resembled Zhu Yanchen, turned his head and assessed the drenched Tang Kuo. “It’s enough, and we can also add some hot soup.”
“Then I’ll make winter melon and pork rib soup.” The white-haired man happily started naming dishes. “I’ll take care of dessert. What do you want? Carrot bread or chocolate cookies?”
“I want both.”
“Tsk, tsk.”
“By the way, who are you two…?” Tang Kuo coughed awkwardly.
“You can call me Gray Claw.” The white-haired man smiled. “The one driving is my partner, Smoke. Oh, we still have some cookies in the car. Are you hungry? Have some to fill your stomach.”
After saying that, as if afraid that Tang Kuo wouldn’t trust him, he casually broke off half a piece and chewed on it.
Tang Kuo’s nose tingled, and he tried to elegantly nibble on the cookie. The place wasn’t far from Blackbirds Town, and Smoke drove the car swiftly. In less than half an hour, they arrived at their destination.
The two men’s house was close to the sea, and the stormy ocean felt quite oppressive. Tang Kuo cautiously stepped inside while using a towel to dry off his hair. He glanced at the backyard of the house and saw… a small square?
Who would build an empty small square behind their own house? Tang Kuo’s relaxed nerves tensed up again.
“It’s quite strange, isn’t it? It’s for walking the dog,” Gray Claw explained considerately as he noticed Tang Kuo’s gaze. “Our dog is… quite big, so it’s not suitable for walking it outside. We’re afraid it might hurt someone.”
“Oh, I see. Where is it? Can I see it? I quite like dogs.” Tang Kuo swiftly changed into dry clothes and handed back the towel.
“Because you were coming, we had a friend take it away first.” Gray Claw scratched his hair. “Don’t mind it. To be honest, it’s not really cute.”
Tang Kuo: “…” The disdain on Gray Claw’s face was genuine, and Tang Kuo silently sympathized with the dog for a few seconds.
Apart from the peculiar small square in the backyard, the room was filled with a warm and cozy atmosphere. The two men prepared dinner in the kitchen, and the atmosphere was naturally comfortable. Such affection couldn’t be faked. Tang Kuo’s nerves finally relaxed bit by bit, leaving only gratitude.
Today, something good finally happened.
Both of them were skilled cooks, and Tang Kuo mustered up the courage to ask for three more bowls of rice. With his guard down, he began to speak more freely.
“Is it true that they’re opening the hibernation chamber in Y City?” Gray Claw raised an eyebrow. “I heard some rumors about it recently, but I didn’t take them seriously.”
“Seems like they released the news early. They want everyone to know.” Tang Kuo chewed on the carrot bread.
“Yeah, we thought they were just creating hype to intimidate those people around N City,” Smoke said quietly while his expression turned colder. “The current leader is quite audacious.”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying!” Tang Kuo finally had an outlet for his grievances. “That’s the original native Erosion Swamp. Who knows what might happen? And not to mention that Shu Jun has been sleeping for so long for the sake of peace, only to be weaponized by the United Government without any consideration for his life? Even if he’s not classified as human, it’s still inappropriate, right?”
Gray Claw’s smile had a hint of significance. “I’m not surprised. It’s not the first time they’ve done something like this.”
Tang Kuo’s expression became bitter. “I hope they can really control it… Since you’ve figured out that I’m a researcher, I won’t lie to you. Although the survival form of the Erosion Swamp has changed, the original Sigma from back then is likely still alive. If something happens on the surface and it develops hostile intentions, there’s a possibility of another catastrophe for humanity.”
Smoke swiftly took the last piece of bread from the plate and broke it in half, giving one half to Gray Claw. “It won’t happen.”
There was a strange sense of certainty in his tone, and Tang Kuo couldn’t help but glance at him again. “How do you know?”
“When Zhu Yanchen proposed this plan, he must have considered the follow-up issues.” Smoke smiled.
“Is it an internal saying within the Zhu family?” Tang Kuo blinked.
Smoke’s smile also became meaningful. “You could say that.”
“Don’t worry.” Gray Claw patted Tang Kuo’s back forcefully. “That generation suffered enough from the Erosion Swamp. Who knows what trump card they’ve hidden in the hibernation chamber?”
After having their fill, Tang Kuo’s body felt comfortable and warm. After pondering for a while, he believed that the words of these two people made a lot of sense. That night, he slept especially relaxed.
The next afternoon, in the presence of all the researchers, the keys of X City and Y City were merged, and the hibernation chamber that had been sealed for a hundred years slowly opened—
And then it exploded.
The explosion wasn’t severe and didn’t harm anyone. After the explosion, people tried to find fragments of the Erosion Swamp but found nothing. Under Tang Kuo’s leadership, the source of the explosion was quickly located and recovered. It was a sophisticated bomb, more like a smoke bomb than a lethal weapon. On the thick metal casing was a short sentence:
[For short-term and high-efficiency suppression. If the situation becomes critical, please escape.]
The age of that bomb was close to a hundred years, indicating that it was placed there before the hibernation chamber was sealed. But Tang Kuo was well aware that the researchers thoroughly inspected the hibernation chamber inside and out countless times back then, and there was absolutely no such dangerous item present, unless…
Unless that thing had been sealed within Shu Jun all along, making it possible to be brought inside.
Frowning at the layered screens, Tang Kuo thought to himself—setting aside the fact that the bomb couldn’t possibly kill a high-level Erosion Swamp like Shu Jun, even if it could, the remaining erosion substance at the scene was too low to be scientifically feasible.
Not to mention designing new weapons, that small amount couldn’t even support the most basic research. Based on the quantity of erosion substance left, the slumbering Shu Jun would only be a mere husk…
Wait, just a husk?
Tang Kuo pulled up all the relevant Erosion Swamp information from back then, and the more he looked, the more shocked he became.
If the Shu Jun sent into the hibernation chamber back then was just a “dummy”, there was no way Zhu Yanchen could have been unaware. They must have planned all this from the beginning. Who could have anticipated that the iron-fist leader would play such a massive joke on the world?
No, without the cooperation of insiders, Zhu Yanchen wouldn’t have been able to accomplish all of this on his own. The subordinates of the two of them back then must have also been aware…
Standing dumbfounded in place, amidst the shock, Tang Kuo felt a profound sense of relief.
Regardless of where Shu Jun was now, dead or alive, he had never harmed humanity. And as a legendary leader, since Zhu Yanchen was capable of considering humanity’s current mindset, he would definitely not allow Shu Jun to act recklessly and jeopardize human development.
With this in mind, it wasn’t so difficult to understand why Zhu Yanchen completely retired and disappeared after his term ended.
Could those two people really…
“Mr. Tang, there’s someone outside who wants to see you. He said he met you yesterday and you left something with him.”
“Oh? Oh, please invite him in quickly.” Tang Kuo shook his head.
“I just saw you on the news.” Gray Claw held up a paper bag, and his face wore a refreshing smile. “The hibernation chamber exploded? Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. Thank you for your concern. But I don’t think I forgot anything last night…”
“Carrot bread. You seem to like it.” Gray Claw shook the bag. “We were worried, so we used an excuse to check up on you. As long as you’re fine, that’s good.”
“It’s really unnecessary…” The level of kindness displayed by these two strangers far exceeded Tang Kuo’s imagination, leaving him momentarily caught off guard.
“Take it. It’s not valuable. We’ve also received a lot of help from the Tang family.” Gray Claw stuffed the paper bag into Tang Kuo’s arms. “Now you have nothing to worry about. Rest well.”
Feeling rather embarrassed, Tang Kuo accepted the bag and suddenly realized, “Wait, how did you know that we couldn’t continue our research?”
Gray Claw didn’t say a word; he just slightly turned his head and winked at Tang Kuo.
Those warm brown eyes instantly turned grayish-white, and the pupils narrowed into slits like a wild beast. Tang Kuo broke out in a cold sweat, but when he looked again, those eyes had returned to their normal warm brown color.
“You… Something’s not right. Are you two…”
“Teacher Tang will be very pleased to have a descendant like you.” Gray Claw smiled. “You’re welcome to visit our home more often, Mr. Tang.”
Tang Kuo opened his mouth as countless thoughts threatened to overload his brain. He tightly held onto the bag in his arms, almost squishing the small cake into a pancake.
He had many questions he wanted to ask, many feelings he wanted to express, but the hair-raising sensation left him breathless. After a few minutes of composure, Tang Kuo’s flushed face finally returned to normal.
“I will.” He didn’t ask anything in the end, nor did he say anything.
“I will.” A few seconds later, Tang Kuo repeated it again with a much more sincere tone. “…Thank you.”
The Erosion Swamp weapons had already become nothing but an illusion. Tomorrow, the sun would rise as usual, and everyone’s lives would continue unchanged. As for himself… he only needed to write down the accident-related issues clearly, without adding any useless speculation.
The world today may not be perfect, but it could be considered peaceful and secure.
‘That’s enough,’ he thought. ‘It’s enough.’
The author has something to say:
As usual, a small reminder: I don’t welcome comments from pirated readers who only buy the “Extras” or “Specific Chapters.” Otherwise, I will give random warnings depending on the situation. Writing a long novel in a niche genre is not easy, so if you like it, please support the official version.
——
Thank you all for your support! This story has come to an end.
It’s my first time writing something this short (?), and to be honest, it feels a bit unfamiliar. I tried a new rhythm and learned a lot of new things! However, I’m not entirely satisfied with the specific effect… In the end, I feel like I wrote too little, so I will continue to explore the rhythm and style that suit me best.
During the writing process, I also realized a lot of issues, and I appreciate your understanding. I will definitely strive to improve XD
The next book, “Sendoff” is already available in the author’s column, a micro-fantasy wuxia~ I’ll start posting within this year!
I’ve also decided on the theme for the fifth book, a crime investigation with a touch of supernatural elements, called “Evil As Humans”. Pre-orders are now available. I’ll probably keep the word count between 500,000 to 1,000,000, releasing two books like this per year (*/ω\*)
Finally, thank you again for supporting the official version! See you in the next book~
Kinky Thoughts:
This marks the end of this novel.
If you enjoyed it, please consider supporting the author by buying the raws. I used Google Chrome with their auto translate and this guide on how to buy novels on jjwxc. Remember, only with your (financial) support can artists continue to produce more great works.
Really, it’s very cheap to support the author with just a couple cents for a chapter.
Once again, thank you everyone for your comments, encouragement, help with my translations, and ko-fi donations. It in part fuels my motivation to release so frequently and try to finish this novel as soon as possible.
Seeing as how Nian Zhong has become my favorite author, I have picked up both projects in the author note. You can check out Sendoff and Evil As Humans by clicking the links or visiting my project page.
With that, I do have one last treat. This is an extra extra from the author’s blog where she writes mini updates for her characters (usually on special holidays). It’s not officially on jjwxc, but I’ve decided to translate it. She usually updates this yearly, so check back each year on those special days for a new update.
Chapter 120: A Bouquet of Roses
Xia Liang and Zhu Yanchen officially “separated”.
This statement wasn’t entirely accurate. The news of their breakup was already made public before Zhu Yanchen disappeared. And since Zhu Yanchen’s resurrection, they hadn’t made any comments regarding their past.
Later, when Miss Xia’s identity as “Dong Lao” was exposed, she officially became a Marshal of the United Government. The distance between them became more apparent. They never acted together in non-public occasions, and their words and actions showed no hint of familiarity, clearly exhibiting a normal superior-subordinate relationship.
Some people were quite dissatisfied with this development.
Knowing that Xia Liang had been Zhu Yanchen’s subordinate for many years, tabloid journalists started speculating and fantasizing about numerous ambiguous stories. Initially, the writers could only imply, and the United Government didn’t pay attention. But gradually, some people became bolder—one of the most legendary leaders of the United Government, and a marshal who transitioned from being a star became the subject of openly discussed interests.
The catalyst was a press conference related to medical issues.
Zhu Yanchen himself didn’t attend, but Xia Liang was present as one of the marshals. After repelling the Erosion Swamp, humanity entered a period of rapid development, and the atmosphere of the press conference was quite relaxed. That was until a daring reporter asked Xia Liang a question.
“Do you and Mr. Zhu have any plans to get married within the year?”
A smile froze on Xia Liang’s face. Before she could respond, another question was thrown at her.
“You’ve been secretly accompanying Mr. Zhu for so long. Is this marshal position some kind of transaction promised to you by Mr. Zhu? The current status of the Xia family…”
The journalist who asked the follow-up question didn’t even have the courage to finish his own question—Xia Liang’s smile faded, and her expression turned terrifyingly unpleasant.
She was still beautiful. Stripping away the layer of gentle charm, her beauty carried a hint of aggression, transforming from rose petals into thorns. However, Xia Liang had always been skilled in dealing with the media, and she wouldn’t lose her temper in public. At most, she would no longer hide her true character.
Fortunately, she didn’t become arrogant, and she was easier to deal with than Yi Ning back then. Even if someone asked impolite questions, Xia Liang would cleverly defuse the situation and keep the conversation under her control.
…This was the first time she revealed this expression.
“The woman behind a successful man? You certainly know how to choose a topic.” Her face twisted, revealing an uncomfortable, cold smile. “The word ‘accompanying’ is quite interesting. Did I disguise myself as an old man just to keep Mr. Zhu from feeling lonely? What do you think the battlefield is?”
“I didn’t mean to offend you. It’s admirable that you’re willing to go through thick and thin with Mr. Zhu. We are…”
“Go through thick and thin?” Xia Liang continued with a cold smile. “The reason Zhu Yanchen initially hid and concealed things is simple; he had no choice. It’s the same for me. I could only find a collaborator to exploit.”
With that, the smile at the corner of her lips grew even more pronounced.
“As for why I didn’t have a choice, it’s because certain people firmly believed that I was destined to be nothing more than a pastime—either a pastime for the public or a pastime for Zhu Yanchen.”
“It’s unnecessary to be so negative. This is too harsh,” someone murmured quietly below. “Who doesn’t know that Zhu Yanchen is responsible for the majority of the achievements on the synthetics’ side? She merely stabilized the situation within the city.”
“Yes, now she’s pretending to have contributed so much. The Xia family has so many members, and Xia Yufeng’s contribution isn’t insignificant. But in the end, Xia Yufeng only received some money, while she climbed to the position of Marshal after the war… Who believes that she has no connection with Zhu Yanchen?”
“At least Marshal Yi fought on the frontlines and made so many sacrifices. She stayed safe and sound in the headquarters without any trouble…”
Xia Liang seemed to have heard their words, and her disdainful smile carried a hint of contempt. She didn’t explain, argue, or even show anger.
“The theme of this press conference is the improvement of medical policies, not a lesson on the basics of tactics, and certainly not a personal life exhibition.” Her voice grew slightly louder. “Everyone, please restrain yourselves. I have only one thing to say to all of you—remember how you used to evaluate Zhu Yanchen many years ago. I hope you keep it in mind.”
Her words were light yet cold, carrying a kind of oppression that had never been felt before. The crowd involuntarily fell silent, allowing her to steer the topic back.
Many years later, when the United Government welcomed its youngest female leader, some people did recall this chilling moment. However, that was a story for another time.
After the meeting, Xia Liang took decisive action, directly pressuring several major organizations that spread rumors and publicly announcing her sexual orientation. Since then, discussions about romantic relationships involving the leader and marshal could only be found in unofficial tabloids.
“Now the magazines are full of rumors about Marshal Xia and Doctor Ai,” Uncle Pan said while wiping the wine bottles. “After Marshal Xia stirred things up like that, your partner finally got liberated.”
“No one dares cause trouble in front of A’Yan. The articles are backed by big conglomerates seeking profit, and they’re skillfully toeing the line. A’Yan can’t just step forward without a valid reason, so it’s infuriating. But it’s their own fault, running into Xia Liang’s crosshairs.”
Shu Jun casually flipped through the newspaper. “I’ve said before that I don’t care about those messy gossip stories, but he has always been bothered by this.”
“Tsk tsk, young people.” Uncle Pan gave Shu Jun a sideways glance. “They like to be possessive; that’s why they mind.”
“But it’s Xia Liang. She would always stay at the Ai’s Clinic whenever she has time. Ai Xiaoxiao would complain to Mr. Tang three or four times a week… Oh, recently Dr. Ai has been complaining less.”
Shu Jun put down the newspaper as he responded in a heavy tone.
“Anyway, Xia Liang is completely out of the question. It’s more appropriate to say that A’Yan and his office desk are more ambiguous. I’ve said it a billion times, but he just doesn’t listen—despite being extremely tactical, he’s more stubborn than anyone in this regard.”
Uncle Pan raised an eyebrow. “Why? Worried that without Marshal Xia, more people will have their eyes on your significant other?”
Shu Jun burst into laughter. “Let them look. If he wanted to betray me, he wouldn’t wait until now. Xia Liang has her own thoughts and is not obliged to be a shield for the two of us, but…”
“But?”
“But I feel a bit regretful if I don’t take the opportunity to tease A’Yan a bit. Uncle Pan, do you know anyone at the flower shop? Help me order a bouquet of roses—the biggest one they have—and have it delivered to the command center.”
“No problem, I’ll take care of it.”
“Oh, by the way, also…”
One day later.
Zhu Yanchen saw the message sent by the gatekeeper, and his face turned slightly pale. The assistant thought something major had happened and approached with trepidation. When he took a look, he almost couldn’t control his expression—
There were countless invitations outside the meeting, and many bold pursuers even sent gifts to the command center. Since Marshal Xia came out openly about her sexual orientation, people from other factions no longer held back. The young and handsome leader was the best target for a political alliance. The Xia family didn’t want that piece of fat, but there were plenty of people eager to make a move.
During the period of the fastest development for humanity since the apocalypse, Zhu Yanchen was just over thirty, in the prime of his life. With his resolute and efficient style, he would undoubtedly choose a partner that maximized his own interests.
As for the confession from the leader of the synthetic humans at the beginning, it had long been forgotten by everyone.
The assistant flipped through a long list of items. “Wow, this name. Isn’t he the leader of the Southern New Trade Association? It’s fine if a lady sends a gift, but why would he, a single man, send this kind of gift?! Marshal Xia’s coming out really gave them quite a lot of inspiration…”
Zhu Yanchen glanced at his assistant with a complicated expression.
“Sir, the number of gifts being sent recently is increasing. I promise to return them all, but they just won’t give up. If we don’t handle it soon, the situation will only get worse.” The assistant earnestly changed the topic. “I know you’re not interested in romance, but honestly, it would be best for you to find a partner, even if it’s fake, to put an end to their hopes—”
“Help me order a new set of uniforms for my meetings,” Zhu Yanchen firmly stated. “Completely redesigned, without gloves.”
“But, but…”
“Traditional systems can be reformed, and traditional uniforms can naturally be changed,” Zhu Yanchen said each word with determination as he slowly took off his gloves. “Isn’t there a fairly significant meeting next Wednesday? Get it done before then.”
“You…?!”
The assistant’s gaze immediately fell upon the young leader’s ring finger. On his fair skin, the ring exuded a warm blackness. Judging by the mark, it was undoubtedly a ring that had been worn for a long time.
“I’m married. My spouse doesn’t want to get involved in politics, so I don’t intend to disclose their identity.”
In public, Zhu Yanchen’s attire was always impeccably neat, and even the assistant had never seen him take off his gloves. Shaken by this earth-shattering news, the assistant stumbled over his words. “B-B-B-But, in that case, surely many people will want to ascertain your wife’s identity. Even if we can suppress it, it will still be quite troublesome. Your wife is a lady, and she might not be able to withstand those scheming individuals. Maybe, maybe you should consider asking her to endure it and hire another lady to pretend in public…”
“No.”
“Sir…”
“In the past, I was able to make myself untraceable, so naturally, I can make my partner untraceable as well. I won’t have someone else impersonate my spouse; absolutely not. As for those gifts, same as usual. Return them as they are.”
After speaking, Zhu Yanchen breathed a sigh of relief, his tone becoming lighter.
“By the way, I need to correct something. My ‘wife’ is a man.”
“…”
The assistant stood frozen in place for a few minutes, trying to confirm whether his boss was joking or not. Seeing that black ring and recalling the confession of the leader of the synthetic humans earlier, he suddenly had a bad premonition.
Forget it, forget it. He must be overthinking things. How could it be “that person”? The leader of the synthetic humans had been placed in an underground secret chamber, dormant for a long time. He had seen the images inside the chamber himself—Shu Jun didn’t have any rings on his hand.
Who could it be then?
It was one thing if it were a woman, but he remembered every man Zhu Yanchen had come into contact with, and he hadn’t seen him show any special attitude toward anyone. On the other hand, considering Mr. Zhu’s current work intensity and scope of activities, if he wanted to have a normal family life, that gentleman would have to be able to fly.
When it came down to it, the two of them couldn’t even meet face-to-face.
Thinking of this, the assistant’s shock began to turn into sympathy. In his mind, the image of a gentle, slim, and restrained young man emerged.
Forget it. If they were willing to make sacrifices for love, he shouldn’t speculate further. The assistant regained his composure and looked at the list of gifts.
“Um, sir. There’s a bouquet of roses here, but it has no signature or message, and it can’t be returned. Do you want to dispose of it or…?”
“No information at all?” Zhu Yanchen furrowed his brow.
“No information at all. The gatekeeper scanned it. It’s just a large bouquet of roses, and they’ve been treated to prevent wilting. Oh, and there’s a hidden bellflower inside, probably a mistake by the florist—”
Zhu Yanchen smiled.
The second half of the assistant’s sentence got stuck in his mouth. He had never seen Zhu Yanchen make such an expression. This new leader had a strong grip and was particularly strict with his trusted subordinates—a genuine iron-fist leader. Zhu Yanchen had never bothered to put on a fake smile.
…Let alone such a gentle smile.
“Get me two vases. Put the roses in the lounge and take out the bellflower separately, placing it on my desk.” Zhu Yanchen’s tone softened slightly. “And don’t forget about the uniform redesign.”
“Yes, sir.” The assistant responded quite decisively this time.
A week later, the news of the married leader caused a huge uproar. Zhu Yanchen had kept that person well hidden, and countless people tried to dig out the identity of that mysterious lover, but in the end, they all came back empty-handed.
The closest thing to the truth that the investigators found were two things:
First, the bellflower on the leader’s desk seemed to have been a gift from that person.
Second, they were deeply in love.
The author has something to say:
Shu Ge: Thank you for the invitation. I really can fly, so we see each other every day.
Marshal: ? Finally, it’s my turn to call someone “my spouse”.
Shu Ge: ?
Chapter 38: A Real Immortal
Yang fire wasn’t an extremely rare thing.
It was particularly effective against demonic entities, and major sects inevitably came into contact with demon-slaying affairs, so they possessed spirit weapons capable of generating yang fire. However, the fire produced by spirit weapons was mixed and couldn’t compare to the purity of fire generated from spiritual qi.
Yin Ci once used a spirit weapon to ignite yang fire and burned himself to ashes. Yang fire had extremely destructive power, and he had thought he could die successfully, but he was reborn from the ashes half a month later.
Impure yang fire seemed to be ineffective.
But when it came to generating fire from spiritual qi, there were very few who could do it. Even if someone could be found, normal people had limited spiritual qi from cultivating both internally and externally. Even someone as powerful as Shi Zhongyu could only cover her sword with fire in critical moments. Only extraordinary individuals like Shi Jingzhi could turn themselves into a burning charcoal ball.
If it were Shi Jingzhi, could he leave nothing but ashes?
The identity of his cheap master was a mystery—a once-in-a-century talent who happened to be pursuing the Shirou alongside him. Perhaps this was the answer destiny had given him—the person destined to accompany him on his final journey.
Yin Ci exerted a bit more force, firmly holding onto Shi Jingzhi as a smile grew on his face.
Shi Jingzhi had exceptional abilities but was too young. At this moment, the exhausted and horrified fox was vulnerable, and Yin Ci could take advantage of the opportunity to plant some suggestions in his little master’s mind, playing with him in the palm of his hand.
When a person was in a vulnerable state, they were most easily manipulated. As a former sect leader, Yin Ci was all too familiar with these tactics.
“Shizun.” Yin Ci’s voice was soft, carrying an irresistible coaxing tone.
Finally, Shi Jingzhi’s panic dissipated. He didn’t relax his body, but simply stared fixedly at the healing wounds of the Goddess, forgetting even to tremble.
“Shizun?” Yin Ci’s voice softened, and his grip grew stronger.
Shi Jingzhi still didn’t move.
Finally, the Goddess recovered from the burning pain. The flesh idol sat upright in its original position while the roots around it squirmed violently, shooting out in all directions. Just as Yin Ci was about to defend with his sword, another force suddenly erupted.
Shi Jingzhi took control of the situation. He sidestepped, twisting Yin Ci’s wrist. Then, his sword qi formed a circle, shattering the approaching tree roots. The golden flame flickered on the sword, not as intense as before but emitting a resolute determination of making a desperate gamble.
“Regeneration,” Shi Jingzhi continued to stare at the flesh idol, murmuring.
Yin Ci was caught off guard as he was pulled into Shi Jingzhi’s embrace.
So, that’s how it is. He shouldn’t have spoken too soon. Upon hearing the word “regeneration”, the monster instantly transformed into prey. Shi Jingzhi completely forgot what fear was, and his face showed only focus and determination.
Yin Ci didn’t like being in a position of being controlled. He wanted to break free but found himself firmly pressed against Shi Jingzhi’s chest, unable to move.
“A’Ci, if you want the golden fire, I’ll give it to you. But you have to do it my way.” That dominant aura reemerged.
“We’re just one step away, Shizun. Delay, and things will change.”
“I still have questions to ask her.”
Yin Ci sneered inwardly. The Goddess was unafraid of pain, so this fox might not have the ability to force her to speak. But since his master had made up his mind, he could wait a little longer.
There was no choice. It was because he couldn’t generate fire himself.
Shi Jingzhi tightened his grip on Yin Ci with one hand and quickly drew his sword with the other. As expected, after the golden fire burned, the healing of the flesh idol’s wounds almost stagnated. In her desperation, the Goddess summoned more tree roots, but they were all blocked by Shi Jingzhi’s golden fire.
The air was filled with the scent of burning wood.
Yin Ci still couldn’t break free from his master’s embrace, so he didn’t force it anymore. Either way, he didn’t plan to get injured in front of Shi Jingzhi. This was also a way to handle the situation.
His cold, jade-like fingertips traced Shi Jingzhi’s forearm, occasionally pointing out a better direction for his master’s sword. Their black hair was scattered and entwined together, creating a touch of intimacy.
Yin Ci only wore a white robe, soaked through by the water, wetting Shi Jingzhi’s front as well. The damp fabric, heated by their combined body temperatures, created an illusion of skin contact.
Shi Jingzhi’s heartbeat was strong, and as he overcame his fear, his sword became steadier.
Rays of light flashed, and the flesh of the statue detached from its bones. The delicate folds of clothing changed shape, and the plump limbs twisted together.
Shi Jingzhi displayed great patience as he peeled away layer by layer, like opening a flower bud. He carved the flesh with his hands, his eyes fixated on the newly formed wounds, seemingly observing their healing speed. When he had seen enough, he changed from carving to stabbing and began to probe the Goddess’s reactions.
This playful behavior completely enraged the Goddess. She used the roots as spears and shot them towards Shi Jingzhi. Shi Jingzhi didn’t dodge, and the spear-like root grazed the side of his face, leaving a fine bloodstain.
“You missed.”
The Goddess’s voice was sharp. “Shut up.”
“Do immortals also miss their marks? Ever since you descended, I noticed that your hands have been shaking, just like a true elderly person. The so-called immortals don’t age, but is it only their appearance that is preserved?”
“Shut up!”
“The villagers of Xizhuang have lived nearby for many years, but now you have dragged them here to serve as draft models, but you’ve done it crookedly… When you created the statues before, you didn’t need draft models, did you?”
“You’re an old person with trembling hands, unable to create a proper statue, yet unwilling to give up this position. That’s why you resorted to this scheme, using the incident with Bai Wei and A’Lu to destroy Xizhuang and gain a large number of ordinary people to practice on.”
The Goddess was clearly struck in a sore spot. Her chest heaved violently, and the flesh idol trembled slightly. “You—”
“You’re not an immortal.” Seeing the other party’s reaction, Shi Jingzhi swung his sword and came to a conclusion. “Given this situation, you should only be an ordinary person who frequently drinks immortal wine. Even if your appearance doesn’t age, inside, you’re just slower in aging than the average person. Are you doing all of this for the immortal wine at the Immortal Assembly?”
The Goddess gasped for breath, and for the first time, a complete expression of anger appeared on her face.
Unfortunately, her anger didn’t help her; instead, it disrupted her attacks. Amidst the burning tree roots, the flesh idol was being sliced into more and more fragments by Shi Jingzhi, gradually losing its form.
As the idol shattered, the roots’ offensive weakened.
Seeing that the situation was hopeless, the Goddess immediately abandoned her idol and attempted to escape. However, her anger clouded her mind, causing her to miss the perfect opportunity. At this point, the Goddess couldn’t mold the lower part of her body in time, and the flesh gradually pulled out, forming a mass of slimy mucus resembling a slug. She desperately clung to the tree roots, intending to climb upward—
The Hanging Shadow Sword mercilessly pierced through her lower back, pinning her to the tree roots.
Finally, Shi Jingzhi released Yin Ci. He casually brushed through his disciple’s long hair with a dim and uncertain gaze. Just as Yin Ci was about to say something, Shi Jingzhi turned around, staggering towards the Goddess alone.
The Goddess had no energy left to be angry. She wore a bitter smile akin to ashes. “Still not satisfied with your questions? With the destruction of the flesh idol, I’ve already resolved to die. Whatever you want to ask… abandon your foolish wish.”
Shi Jingzhi acted as if he hadn’t heard. He approached while supporting himself with the flagpole as he leaned his body forward and whispered a few words to the Goddess. At first, she remained indifferent, but as she listened further, her expression gradually changed.
The anger dissipated, leaving only fear in her gaze.
“What do you want to know?” After a long while, the Goddess trembled and spoke.
Shi Jingzhi asked, “What is this flesh idol, and why can it regenerate?”
“I don’t know what it is. I only follow orders. It requires those with immortal potential as raw materials, refining the coarse and preserving the essence, slowly sculpting it until it takes form. Once it’s complete, someone will come to claim it. As for regeneration… it’s an image of the Imperial Celestial, naturally blessed by it, enjoying boundless power.”
Shi Jingzhi clicked his tongue in disappointment, and the Goddess shivered.
“Although I have been molding idols here for decades, that’s all I know. Connecting my body to it just now was merely to borrow the power of the God.”
Seeing that the Goddess didn’t seem to be lying, Yin Ci’s mood became complicated.
What exactly did Shi Jingzhi say to her?
“What about the gigantic tree-root statue?” Shi Jingzhi asked again.
“It is a divine miracle. It has always been here.”
“You really live in a muddled state… One last question, do you truly possess an elixir that can cure all ailments?”
A glimmer of hope flashed in the Goddess’s eyes. “Yes, I do! Regardless of the illness, it can ensure you a peaceful end. As long as you release me, I swear to bring it to you. I guarantee you won’t suffer any harm within three days, as long as you don’t leave this place…”
“Don’t leave this place?”
“The elixir only works here.” The Goddess gritted her teeth.
Shi Jingzhi shook his head gently. “I understand. Unfortunately, that’s not what I’m looking for.”
He took a step back, revealing a calm that had settled after the dust had settled.
Immediately, he took out his own flag. The flag ignited the last golden fire; the flames burned relentlessly, still scorching hot.
“No!” The Goddess’s face turned pale. “You promised me, you promised! You can’t—”
Shi Jingzhi smiled faintly, burning her body into ashes, leaving only a head silently screaming. Seizing the opportunity before the head died, he casually threw it into the lake.
The entire forbidden area fell silent for a moment.
In the next moment, all the white-clothed creatures on the cave walls trembled. They went mad, breaking free from their chains and plunging into the lake. Yin Ci looked down and saw that those creatures tore off their wrappings and merged into the flesh mucus. The people of Yuanxian Village and Xizhuang fused together, tightly enclosing the severed head.
Shi Jingzhi didn’t look back; he just let go of the flag and stared at the remaining fragments of the flesh idol.
It was burned and fragmented, yet still alive, lying there unconscious and oblivious.
“A’Ci, I know what you want to ask.” Shi Jingzhi fixed his gaze on the flesh statue. “I simply fulfilled her desires in reverse.”
“She didn’t fear the pain of death and was willing to dwell here. What she wanted was not wealth and power for longevity. When I attacked her, she didn’t specifically defend her face, so she didn’t want eternal youth. Finally, she abandoned the statue and tried to escape, which meant she wasn’t devout status… But when people live in this world, they always seek something.”
Shi Jingzhi turned slowly.
“Willing to commit such madness, she must fear aging completely—fear being alive but powerless. Unable to see, unable to taste, easily imprisoned by illness, and unable to move.”
“So I told her that we wouldn’t kill her. I will merge her with the flesh mucus and imprison her at the bottom of the pool. As an immortal, her consciousness will surely last longer than an ordinary person… In this world, seeking death is more painful than being unable to achieve life.”
A chill ran through Yin Ci’s heart.
It turned out all his previous assumptions were just illusions. Shi Jingzhi showed no reaction to his true identity, indicating that he wasn’t the mute he had raised. And judging by Shi Jingzhi’s methods, the cruelty was on par with his own. This person wasn’t easy to control. Although the paper window had been punctured by himself, he couldn’t be careless in the future.
Yin Ci timely changed the subject. “What’s the deal with the abnormality of the white-clothed creatures?”
“When I was down there, I also tried touching the flesh mucus. As your master, I should know what you have encountered, right?” Shi Jingzhi maintained his usual expression. “Afterward, I had contact with Bai Wei.”
Shi Jingzhi rubbed the flagpole in his hand, and his tone became complicated.
“I told him, no, I told everyone with residual consciousness that I would throw down the Goddess. Once they obtained the divine body, they could return to their original state.”
Yin Ci narrowed his eyes. “Did the Goddess tell you that?”
Did this guy already harbor murderous intent before climbing up?
“I made it up; there’s no hope for them.” Shi Jingzhi twisted his lips. “The Goddess experienced a moment of despair, so they can also have a moment of hope. Is that not good? Come, A’Ci. Now we can destroy this place.”
The rhythm was completely disrupted, and Yin Ci’s expression was displeased. “Shizun, destroying the forbidden area is not a problem. However, if the Goddess’ remains are not found, we’ll face a lot of trouble when we leave.”
Repeatedly burned by the golden fire, the Goddess’ recovery became slower and slower. However, before he could fully study her, Shi Jingzhi took matters into his own hands and destroyed her remains. The flesh idol remained, but it was on the verge of collapsing, showing signs of returning to flesh mucus without any trace of regeneration.
It seemed as if she had been abandoned.
While Yin Ci was lost in thought, Shi Jingzhi stared at him intently from the side.
The Ghost Tomb was too dark, and the situation was too chaotic. This was the first time Shi Jingzhi carefully observed his disciple.
The tattered white clothing clung pitifully to Yin Ci’s body, merging with his pale skin. Yin Ci had a cold temperament, but if one only looked at his features, they would be considered refined, impeccable even. At this moment, his brows furrowed slightly, and his disheveled, ink-black hair gave off a strange sense of vulnerability, arousing an irresistible desire to destroy.
But he was surprisingly strong.
He didn’t expect to catch such a perfect prey instead of death during zhuazhou.
Shi Jingzhi smiled again. “The solution is simple—satisfy people’s desires. As for your matter… A’Ci, I’ll ask you about it when we leave here.”
Yin Ci suddenly had a realization, understanding a delayed truth—whenever Shi Jingzhi smiled like this, it was never a good sign.
At the entrance of the forbidden area, dawn was breaking.
Mian Jie had been waiting for her daughter. Yin Deng rushed out of the tree hole with her deformed arm trembling, and threw herself into her mother’s embrace, crying loudly. Most of the villagers crowded near the entrance, waiting for the remaining people to come out.
The Goddess didn’t appear.
However, the enchanting guest did come out, holding another person in his arms. That person, dressed in white, had closed eyes, and their entire being seemed carved from jade, seemingly unconscious.
Shi Jingzhi had a solemn expression. “I am an envoy of the Imperial Celestial, here to save the divine spirit in this place. The Goddess is actually a demon, imprisoning the divine spirit in the forbidden area, occupying another’s nest, and using living beings to perform her evil arts… This place has been controlled by demonic creatures for hundreds of years, and the God couldn’t bear it, so he sent me.”
He smiled at the crowd.
Behind him, golden flames soared into the sky, devouring everything within the forbidden area.
In the depths of the forbidden area, within the flesh mucus, the half-melted head of the Goddess opened its eyes wide, silently cursing.
[Fool, there are gods in this world…]
[Indeed, there are gods in this world. I have seen… a true immortal who can change the colors of heaven and earth and bring calamity upon the living…]
[Disrespecting the ghosts and gods will surely be met with retribution, surely…]
Within the towering flames, the pool water evaporated, and the flesh mucus turned to ashes. The stone lotus shattered into dust, and the withered lotus leaves turned into flying particles. Within the forbidden area, there were no more white-clothed creatures or flesh statues. Only the towering tree root figure stood still, slightly bowing its head, and under its feet, everything turned to ash.
The golden light of the yang fire illuminated its face.
The refined features formed by the entangled tree roots remained serene, without sorrow or joy, without anger or resentment.
The author has something to say:
As for why the goddess didn’t use the elixir to save herself… Aging is not an illness and cannot be treated√
Demonic Lord Yin tried to put a collar on the fox, but ended up being bitten (?
Do you remember that Master wants to teach you a lesson? The lesson is already on its way, awaiting delivery.
Chapter 190: Standards
After everyone finished making a fuss, in the end, no one backed out.
The true strength of Unit 9 shouldn’t be revealed publicly, so the “secret test” was indeed the best method. To Yin Ren’s surprise, Professor Li remained unmoved. As one of the highest leaders in the Shian Haigu branch, he should have prioritized his own safety.
However, he simply stood firmly in his place, with half of his face illuminated and darkened by the screen on Jiao Lian’s body.
“Can we start? I have a meeting afterward,” Li Nian said.
Yin Ren remained silent for a moment, then raised his hand and drew several paths of light in the air—
Fear, satisfaction.
Hate, sorrow, joy, love.
He crookedly wrote down various emotions and marked a red cross on a few of them.
“Whether it’s the Divine Descent twenty-eight years ago or the present, only a few individuals have disappeared after exposure to corruption. If the premise of ‘mental resilience’ is correct, we need to determine which ’emotion’ triggers the disappearances.”
Yin Ren brought over a chair and sat in front of Jiao Lian.
Zhong Chengshuo naturally stepped forward, placing his hands on the back of a wooden chair.
Yin Ren slowed down his voice. “Last night, I conducted some tests. We only need to test a few emotions… We don’t need to test ‘satisfaction’. Next, we will experiment with fear. Minister Jiao will monitor the other side, while I will observe the situation here.”
“That sounds feasible.”
Fu Xingchuan glanced at Zhong Chengshuo a few times as he spoke, and the latter made an effort to look innocent, resembling a large hanging decoration behind Yin Ren’s chair. Fu Xingchuan looked on fruitlessly, then withdrew his gaze after a while.
“When it comes to manipulating emotions, I have a quick method. Time is limited, so let’s go with this.”
Fu Xingchuan took out a box of sticky note-like objects from his pocket and swiftly tore off several pieces. “These are illusion talismans, ready-made good stuff. I will evoke your corresponding memories.”
Once the memories were in place, it wasn’t difficult to trigger emotions. When the situation called for it, Shian personnel used similar methods to soothe those involved. Fu Xingchuan held the expensive talismans between his fingers and skillfully distributed them among the group.
When it came to Li Nian, Fu Xingchuan hesitated for a moment but ultimately didn’t give him a talisman.
“You won’t be affected much by it so just imagine it yourself,” Fu Xingchuan said softly.
Yin Ren looked around. After Fu Xingchuan completed his round, everyone in the dim room, including Zhong Chengshuo and Li Nian, as well as Yin Ren himself, had a square piece of talisman-like sticky note.
Lord Ghost King didn’t hold back and stuck the talisman on his face like a strip of adhesive. Fu Xingchuan simply stuck it on the back of his hand, performing the action with equal ease.
Lu Xiaohe and Ge Tingting held it solemnly in their hands, while Huang Jin wore a troubled expression, reluctantly pinching it with his fingertips.
First was fear.
Fu Xingchuan began by testing Yin Ren. When the other party’s fingers approached, Yin Ren decisively withdrew his defenses and allowed the other to perform the spell.
The illusion wasn’t powerful, but it was intricate. In an instant, the scene in front of Yin Ren receded, and familiar images entered his eyes.
The setting sun, steps, the exit of the Fu residence’s basement.
Sudden gunshots, splattering blood, Zhong Chengshuo’s bewildered gaze.
…And right after, the head suddenly exploded in front of Yin Ren.
Although he knew that the person was right beside him, the blood in the illusion felt sticky, warm, and the strong scent of blood assaulted his nose. The touch, the temperature—everything felt unbelievably real.
The blood of Zhong Chengshuo.
Even though he knew it was all an illusion, Yin Ren’s heart raced madly, and his nerves stretched to the point of pain. The panic and helplessness of that moment felt like a torn wound, oozing putrid pus.
Yin Ren felt a bit dazed. The subsequent search, battle, and reunion, including the present moment, were all just grand illusions. Was it because he couldn’t accept Zhong Chengshuo’s death that his mind conjured up these subsequent bizarre fantasies?
As this thought arose, boundless fear descended upon him.
In the next moment, Yin Ren’s vision darkened. The old steps under the evening sun vanished, and he found himself back in the secret room of the Shian building. If he hadn’t forcibly steadied himself, Yin Ren would have almost fallen to the ground.
“Haa… Haa…” Regardless of dignity, he struggled to regulate his breathing, feeling a tumultuous churning in his stomach.
He thought that once Zhong Chengshuo returned, the impact of this scene would dissipate. However, when it reappeared before him, Yin Ren realized that he could hardly think straight. His head buzzed, and the blood in his entire body turned icy cold, as if submerged in ice water.
Yin Ren subconsciously wanted to grasp the hand Zhong Chengshuo had placed on the chair back, but he ultimately held back. He quietly extended a small, wing-like appendage the size of a finger joint and slid it down the chair leg, disappearing into the shadow and crawling up Zhong Chengshuo’s pants until it reached the person’s chest.
Sensing the rise and fall of Zhong Chengshuo’s chest, feeling the warmth of his body, Yin Ren finally calmed down.
“The Evil Force in the wooden talisman doesn’t have any special reaction,” he said, clearing his throat.
“There’s, no special reaction, either,” Jiao Lian dutifully reported.
“Then, let’s move on to the next one.” Yin Ren handed out the wooden rabbit talisman he held.
He had intended to hand it to Fu Xingchuan, but Professor Li intercepted him midway. The professor tightly clenched the rabbit wooden talisman in his palm, closed his eyes, and pursed his lips tightly.
That already serious face appeared even more devoid of emotion.
As a top science post, Li Nian couldn’t rely on talismans. No one knew what kind of terrifying memories this impassive individual had unearthed.
In less than five seconds, Li Nian’s face began to pale, and a thin layer of sweat formed on his forehead. His hand trembled as he held the wooden rabbit talisman left no doubt that he was enduring profound fear.
“No special reaction,” Yin Ren said.
“Same,” Jiao Lian concisely added.
Fu Xingchuan, Ge Tingting… and finally, it was Huang Jin’s turn. They didn’t know what Huang Jin saw, but he seemed to want to pack himself into a box. Unfortunately, as the wooden rabbit talisman made its way around the group, it remained unresponsive, devoid of any special fluctuations, like an ordinary object.
Disgust, no special reaction.
Sorrow, still no special reaction on either side. Yin Ren looked around cautiously, fearing that Ms. Qi might suddenly appear for a meal in some corner.
“The next one is…” Yin Ren’s memory was a bit hazy. He took out his phone, attempting to look up Shian’s emotional classifications.
“There’s no need to continue.”
Tortured by three negative emotions three times, even someone as strong as Fu Xingchuan’s complexion turned slightly bluish.
“Didn’t you say that the more primitive the emotion, the stronger the Primordial Elemental? If you’re shamelessly snatching people, surely you won’t snatch someone away to feed minor characters on the Other Side.”
“That’s true, but I did test satisfaction before.” Yin Ren frowned. “Satisfaction, joy, and love…”
“How did you test it?”
Fu Xingchuan hesitated several times before speaking, but before he could say anything, Li Nian preempted him.
For some reason, even without the aid of talismans, Professor Li’s reaction was greater than anyone else’s. After three rounds, his hair was completely drenched in sweat, and he seemed on the verge of fainting at any moment.
But his voice remained steady.
“Could it be an experiment using a living person?” His sharp gaze was fixed directly on Yin Ren.
“Not to that extent. I have my methods.”
Thinking about the massive fortunes destroyed by Miss Qi Xin, even if they weren’t his own belongings, Yin Ren couldn’t help but feel a surge of overwhelming sadness.
“So, can you confirm that the experimental materials are not flawed?” Faced with this senior who had traveled through time, Li Nian remained composed, showing no mercy. “I suggest verifying it again. Satisfaction is a positive emotion that everyone should find easier to accept.”
“Well, technically, it’s possible…”
But theoretically, Zhong Chengshuo’s ability to simulate emotions with data should yield better results than the effects of illusions. After all, these people were at least considered his friends, and illusions ultimately affected people, tormenting their hearts and minds.
They didn’t have much time now, and it was not suitable to waste their energy on detours.
Just as Yin Ren was about to explain the situation, a voice suddenly echoed in his mind.
[You can save them. But a small suggestion, don’t use the pile of brains from just now… They have defects that will conveniently lead you astray from the correct answer.]
Wait a minute.
“Lead you astray from the correct answer…” Yin Ren tightly clenched the talisman paper in his hand, murmuring under his breath.
There were a relatively large number of brains there. What unified flaw could they possibly have? Even serial killers were still humans. Whether it was fear or satisfaction, they would always have corresponding perceptions, unless… unless…
Amidst the haze, Yin Ren seemed to have grasped something.
Satisfaction.
Joy and love.
“They mostly lack the capacity for ‘love’.” Zhong Chengshuo lowered his body, his gentle breath brushing against the skin by Yin Ren’s ear. “Although you haven’t researched this, you must have seen plenty of related films and TV shows.”
Indeed. Mr. Qiu corresponded to “disgust” and Ms. Qi Xin corresponded to “sorrow”. Mr. Qiu was already dead, and Ms. Qi Xin was someone who actively sought her own sustenance. The only advanced elements remaining were “joy” and “love”. Combined with what Zhong Chengshuo just said…
“We can retest if you want. Let’s try ‘love’ first.” Yin Ren made a decisive decision.
After speaking, he once again placed the sticky note on his face.
The illusion started for the fourth time.
Yin Ren saw Zhong Chengshuo, wearing a rabbit mask, shooting a string of bubbles in the abandoned amusement park. He also saw his lover, deeply asleep and breathing softly, leaning on the table.
Light and shadows flowed, and the illusion turned into caresses and warmth. The touch on his skin felt incredibly real, almost scorching his brain.
The wooden rabbit talisman in his palm moved.
“There’s a reaction,” Jiao Lian said. “The space on the other side is vibrating.”
Yin Ren ended the illusion with a slightly dazed expression and turned to look at Zhong Chengshuo. There was a reaction, but he himself didn’t disappear like Lu Xiaohe’s mother.
For some reason, this discovery left him somewhat disheartened. Yin Ren’s mind was filled with mixed emotions, and he couldn’t quite pinpoint the source of his disappointment.
“I’ll go next!” Fu Xingchuan, oblivious to the subtle thoughts of his elder, sounded a bit joyful in his voice.
Unfortunately, Fu Xingchuan, who had been single for over forty years, couldn’t perform any miracles. Compared to Yin Ren’s turn, both the wooden talisman and the response from the Other Side were weaker.
Fu Xingchuan: “…”
“You work too much overtime,” Minister Jiao Lian pointed out seriously. “Life is barren. What did you see just now?”
Fu Xingchuan struggled, considering that it wasn’t easy to converse with Minister Jiao. Nonetheless, he bravely gave his answer. “…When I was a child, I went to the beach with my whole family to sunbathe. My mom bought me three scoops of ice cream.”
Jiao Lian: “Hehe!”
The screens all over her body gleefully flickered. Yin Ren’s emotions eased slightly. Despite Minister Jiao’s unfavorable circumstances, her personality was quite… different from what he had imagined.
With this little interlude, the previously tense atmosphere finally loosened slightly.
Ignoring the sympathetic gazes from everyone, Fu Xingchuan handed the wooden talisman to Li Nian. However, Li Nian, who rarely showed any emotion, didn’t take it. “I’ll go last.”
He didn’t explain why.
Since the higher-ups indicated postponement, Ge Tingting was the next to grab the wooden talisman. Unfortunately, the level of abnormality she caused was almost identical to Fu Xingchuan’s, leaving it unclear who was more deserving of sympathy.
Next was Lu Xiaohe.
The moment the illusion started, tears welled up in Lu Xiaohe’s eyes and streamed down her cheeks. She held back from making any sound, but the tears continued to flow. The wooden talisman emitted a chilling aura, and Lu Xiaohe’s feet turned into phantoms. She appeared as if she were a living ghost.
“Stop!” Yin Ren formed a gesture, and the wooden talisman flew out in response. Lu Xiaohe’s feet instantly solidified, and she collapsed to the ground.
Her sports shoes vanished without a trace, leaving behind a pair of clean, bare feet.
“The reaction from the Other Side is stronger.” Jiao Lian’s speech speed quickened. “I need more data.”
“Same here,” Yin Ren agreed. He took a long breath and felt the strange sense of disappointment weighing heavily on his heart.
“Bring it here.” Huang Jin, wearing a pained expression, walked up to Yin Ren and obediently took the wooden talisman. “Don’t hold too much hope. I… Ahhhh!”
Before the illusion even started, as if sinking into invisible seawater, Huang Jin’s lower body instantly disappeared.
Terrified, he flailed his arms and grabbed hold of Yin Ren’s hair. His rough pulling nearly yanked Yin Ren to tears.
There was no brilliance of spells, no strange sounds—only the Evil Force on the wooden talisman was rapidly surging. Seeing this person’s body quickly vanishing up to his chest, Yin Ren made a decisive move. In front of everyone, he extended a strand of hair and dug out the wooden talisman from Huang Jin’s hand. In the next moment, it was completely sealed within the dark mass of his black hair.
Fu Xingchuan swiftly rushed forward, activating dozens of spells in an instant. Lu Xiaohe and Ge Tingting hastily reached out, grabbing hold of Huang Jin’s clothes, pulling him out together as if pulling out a radish.
“Fuck, fuck, take it easy! It hurts, ahhhhh!!!”
Huang Jin had an expressionless face as he frantically clawed at the things around him, resembling a person about to be swept away by a torrential flood. After more than ten seconds, everyone finally managed to pull Huang Jin, who had nearly disappeared, back. The suction force from the other side was extremely stubborn, and the whole process was more difficult than rescuing someone from a swamp.
Even Zhong Chengshuo had a stern face and grabbed a bed sheet to cover the lower half of Huang Jin’s body—while Lu Xiaohe only lost her shoes, Huang Jin’s clothes, from his chest down, completely vanished without a trace.
After being pulled out, Huang Jin trembled and shrank into the corner, wrapping himself tightly in the bedsheets.
“This is unscientific!” Huang Jin leaned against the corner of the bed; his voice nearly cracking. “How is it possible that my situation is worse than Lu Xiaohe’s?!”
“Maybe you really like Ding Lizi Jie,” Ge Tingting objectively speculated. “And besides, this is not within the realm of science.”
Huang Jin’s face turned pale and then green. He looked around at his superiors and colleagues, ultimately pulling the bed sheet up to cover his head as well. He then turned his entire body towards the corner of the room, indicating that he didn’t intend to speak again.
“The reaction from the Other Side is very strong,” Jiao Lian commented.
“We have enough data, but it can still be supplemented,” Yin Ren added.
Upon hearing this, everyone’s gaze turned to Li Nian. It was said that it could be supplemented, and he was the only one left to be tested.
“I won’t need it,” Professor Li said indifferently, without touching the ice-cold wooden talisman.
Fu Xingchuan looked at him for a while and said, “…Okay.”
“Why?” Huang Jin, inside the bed sheets, muttered with a voice that wasn’t too loud. “You just said you wanted to be the last one.”
“Because I’m different from you.”
Li Nian maintained his calm and plain tone.
“If it were me, there would be a more than 90% chance that I would disappear instantly. I still have work at Shian, and it’s not the right time yet.”
Huang Jin finally emerged his head from the bed sheet and looked at Li Nian with a hint of surprise.
“Then let’s end it here for today.” Upon hearing these words, Yin Ren stood up with an expression that wasn’t too great. “Everyone needs rest, and Minister Jiao and I have gathered enough data. Minister Jiao, when you have results on your end, remember to have Fu Xingchuan and the others inform me.”
With that, he, unusually, didn’t wait for his companions and was the first to leave the room.
Zhong Chengshuo quickly followed suit and walked out second.
“There are still three hours until the end of work. We can go home first, and you can request to work from home.” Zhong Chengshuo habitually discussed the day’s plan. “We made great progress at Shian today, which is suitable for us to study together.”
“Sure, okay…” Yin Ren replied with little enthusiasm.
“I can make your favorite food at home.”
Seeing that his lover was in a bad mood, Zhong Chengshuo blinked his eyes and took out his top-ranked response plan from his mind.
“Do you have any thoughts about what just happened?” Yin Ren smoothly stepped into the elevator and pressed the “1” button.
Zhong Chengshuo looked around, and they were the only two people in the elevator, but the atmosphere wasn’t as gentle as usual.
“The reason for those people’s disappearance may be related to the emotion of ‘love’. However, the specific conditions and whether they are consistent with the incident from twenty-eight years ago will need to be determined after examining the specific data.”
So that’s it. Yin Ren was probably focused on considering the case. After pondering for a moment, Zhong Chengshuo confidently gave his opinion.
“Is that all?” Yin Ren turned his face, and his visible disappointment was unmasked.
Zhong Chengshuo’s thoughts raced frantically, unable to think of any overlooked aspects. He shook his head sincerely. Yin Ren let out a sigh, and the mini wings that were attached to Zhong Chengshuo’s chest slipped out and reverted to ordinary strands of hair.
“Are you angry?”
Zhong Chengshuo, following the fine tradition of a science post, asked when he didn’t understand.
“No.” Yin Ren stopped by the roadside, staring at the busy traffic in the afternoon.
“But you’re in a bad mood. Is it because of me?”
“You could say that…”
“I understand. It’s because I covered Huang Jin with a bed sheet and saw him without clothes.” Zhong Chengshuo began analyzing the accumulated themes of romantic works. “So you’re unhappy.”
Yin Ren looked at him in shock. He touched his own forehead, then touched Zhong Chengshuo’s forehead, his face filled with even more perplexity.
Fortunately, at that moment, the taxi they had called in advance arrived, preventing Lord Ghost King’s medical examination behavior from escalating further.
“…I just thought that maybe you should be angry.”
Once they got in the car, Yin Ren immediately opened the window. The autumn air carried a strong scent of osmanthus flowers, filling the car in an instant. Zhong Chengshuo tilted his head slightly and appeared a bit confused.
“Why should I be angry?”
Yin Ren glanced at the driver in front and began typing on his phone.
[The reason for the disappearances is related to “love”, but these rules have a very mild effect on me, slightly stronger than Fu Xingchuan and the others.]
[Ge Tingting is young and has little experience. Fu Xingchuan thought of a family trip to the seaside. As for my feelings for you, they don’t seem to be as strong as you think. Upon reflection, the things I’ve done for you sound remarkable, but they are all based on the premise that “I know I am strong”. It’s not that extraordinary.]
Zhong Chengshuo lowered his gaze, quietly reading the text. After spending some time in the modern world, Yin Ren’s typing speed had noticeably increased.
[You have always been quick-witted. How could you not have thought of this? But you don’t seem to care about it either. I have a strange feeling, as if it’s not right for me to be mad at myself, nor at you.]
[I’m worried.]
After typing those words, Yin Ren’s fingers paused for a moment. His strands of hair swayed gently, and the warm afternoon light flowed slowly through his black hair. Lord Ghost King sighed for a few seconds before resuming the movement of his fingers.
[I’m worried that our approach to love is off, and I don’t know how to do it. I’m supposed to be the one guiding you, as I understand social conventions better than you.]
Zhong Chengshuo blinked his eyes, reached out his hand, and slowly pulled the little device from Yin Ren’s hand.
[I can’t answer that.]
In the refreshing and sweet scent of osmanthus, he earnestly typed his response.
[I can only tell you that this experiment hasn’t been thoroughly analyzed yet. In theory, Lu Xiaohe’s “love” for her mother should not be weaker than Huang Jin’s “love” for Ding Lizi. I believe emotions are complex, and there are many variables in the experiment.]
[The “intensity of love” may be just one of the conditions. Until we have more certain conditions, you don’t need to feel discouraged.]
Zhong Chengshuo typed that sentence very slowly. Yin Ren couldn’t help but shift his gaze and look at Zhong Chengshuo, who was typing seriously.
Zhong Chengshuo was sitting on the side facing the sun. As the sunlight poured in through the car window, it cast a golden-brown hue on his black eyelashes.
“Are you trying to comfort me?” Yin Ren forced a smile, dissipating some of the confusion. However, it still lingered like a layer of dark clouds in his heart.
Zhong Chengshuo turned his dark eyes and shook his head firmly.
[This is science.] He emphasized seriously.
“Well, I hope I’m just overthinking.”
Zhong Chengshuo was still the same Zhong Chengshuo, explaining the situation with such rationality that it was exasperating. With important matters at hand, Yin Ren decided to set aside this mysterious emotional issue and focus on finding a solution on his own.
“Anyway, let’s focus our energy on the experiment… Huh?”
Zhong Chengshuo didn’t stop there; he seemed to have noticed something and started typing seriously again.
[Personally, I think it doesn’t matter if we choose the wrong way of love or if our emotional intensity isn’t as strong as others. In this aspect, I don’t need your guidance.]
[You are judging guidance based on human emotions as a benchmark, but we are not humans, and those benchmarks may not be applicable.]
After typing this sentence, a subtle sense of satisfaction appeared on Zhong Chengshuo’s tense face.
[Objectively speaking, we are each other’s only kind.]
“That’s true.”
Yin Ren was taken aback, then chuckled. Looking at the vivid satisfaction on Zhong Chengshuo’s face, for some reason, most of his distress dissipated in an instant.
“I didn’t expect it, Zhong Ge. You’re quite eloquent… Wait a minute.”
Yin Ren’s expression suddenly froze.
Chapter 189: Each Takes What They Need
Zhong Chengshuo silently tightened his grip on Qi Xin. Ever since this person appeared, he hadn’t exchanged any eye contact with Yin Ren.
Yin Ren tried to calm his emotions. With Qi Xin’s allegiance still uncertain, he couldn’t casually reveal that “Zhong Chengshuo is a powerful Primordial Elemental”. After all, when they met in Gengsheng Town, she only focused on him and called him a “cub”, seemingly unaware of Zhong Chengshuo’s special nature.
“Alright, it’s not a flesh puppet.” Yin Ren adopted the demeanor of the Great Celestial Master of a thousand years ago, speaking calmly and casually. “But you should also know that Zhong Chengshuo was killed by Mr. Qiu, and I don’t have the ability to resurrect the dead.”
Since Qi Xin knew that Yin Ren killed Mr. Qiu, she must have some understanding of Mr. Qiu’s attack on the Fu residence. As expected, her expression remained unchanged upon hearing that Zhong Chengshuo was killed.
“As for what this is, it has nothing to do with you.”
Yin Ren continued reluctantly. He casually pulled over an interrogation chair and sat down with an indifferent posture.
“You come and go mysteriously without speaking human language, and now I have to explain everything to you in detail?”
Qi Xin’s gaze shifted between Zhong Chengshuo and Yin Ren. Suddenly, her neck twitched like a snake, and she leaned forward to sniff the back of Zhong Chengshuo’s neck. Zhong Chengshuo remained motionless, as if he had turned into a wax figure on the spot.
After sniffing, Qi Xin moved her restrained wrist, and her expression became even more puzzled.
“We have already determined that Primordial Elementals exist in a food chain system. The higher up the food chain, the more primal and purer the emotions, and the fewer the number of individuals within the species.”
Zhong Chengshuo suddenly spoke with a flat tone.
“Mr. Qiu represents the emotion of ‘disgust’, while the emotion you possess is ‘sorrow’. Both of you are top-tier Elementals in the food chain, and it is highly likely that only one of each exists. After the original dies, a cub will appear.”
Qi Xin stopped struggling. She stood calmly in place, examining Yin Ren once again with an almost scrutinizing gaze.
Yin Ren chuckled softly. “This is the result of my investigation. Surprised?”
God knew how many facial twitches he suppressed behind this relaxed smile.
He himself was surprised! Zhong Chengshuo didn’t mention anything about “the death of the original individual and the birth of a new offspring”! This guy must have secretly studied something and hadn’t had a chance to tell him yet.
Feigning ignorance while keeping his eyes open, this was probably the essence of being an accomplice.
Fortunately, the intelligence Zhong Chengshuo provided was indeed useful.
“Interesting. You can have your puppet release me now. I can listen to what you have to say.” Qi Xin raised her chin. “Of course, I won’t guarantee cooperation.”
“Release her,” Yin Ren ordered.
Zhong Chengshuo finally released his grip on Qi Xin’s arm. Qi Xin disregarded the shattered glass on the table and sat cross-legged on it. Zhong Chengshuo remained standing in his original position. It must be said that he was truly suited to play the role of a puppet, reaching the pinnacle of acting skills.
Yin Ren pressed his temples and quickly assessed the current situation.
[’You’ are still alive. No… No, it should be said, ‘You’ are back… I knew it would be like this…]
[You have to grow up quickly. Come back soon and kill us well.]
That was what Qi Xin said when they met in Gengsheng Town. At that time, she was devouring the Semi-Evil Spirit old mayor with overwhelming strength that was truly shocking.
At this critical moment, Zhong Chengshuo wouldn’t waste words. If he wanted to intimidate Qi Xin, he would surely mention information that they both knew so as not to disrupt Yin Ren’s “performance”. But he deliberately chose information that Yin Ren was unaware of, so there must be some deeper meaning to “targeting Qi Xin” within it.
Yin Ren’s mind had never worked so hard before. In a flash of lightning, countless thoughts raced through his mind.
The death of the original individual and the birth of a new offspring… The “You” that Qi Xin mentioned, who could kill many Primordial Elementals, was likely a representation of the top-tier species in the food chain. After all, “top-tier Primordial Elementals are highly likely to exist as the only one”.
Literally speaking, there was once an Elemental on the Other Side that had killed countless others and was extremely formidable. If Qi Xin wasn’t mistaken, this “You” likely referred to Zhong Chengshuo.
However, Yin Ren couldn’t see how this science post, who even haggled at the market, could match the image of a “killer of many”. Even in the role of King Yama, Zhong Chengshuo demanded payment for his services.
And aside from that, why would Qi Xin yearn for “death”?
Mr. Qiu was annihilated, indicating that Primordial Elementals could be completely destroyed. If Miss Qi truly desired death so much, she could simply ask her companions to tear her apart.
However, this Primordial Elemental representing “sorrow” had appeared just minutes ago, seeking something to eat, showing clear concern for the quality of life.
It was too contradictory. Could the phrase “kill us” be some mysterious symbol? Yin Ren wished he could pry open her mouth and make her speak more intelligibly.
But all he could do was think in his mind.
In less than ten seconds, Yin Ren resumed the conversation.
“Now I have some understanding of the Primordial Elementals and have the means to suppress them. Of course, all of this is based on my exploration using human technology. As for your so-called Primordial Elemental skills in combat, I simply cannot comprehend them out of thin air.”
For the former Great Celestial Master, adopting the tone of a superior came naturally.
“Since our encounter in Gengsheng Town, your attitude toward me has been rather strange… Since you have a favor to ask, your attitude should at least be a bit better.”
Qi Xin’s neck had returned to its original state. She remained silent, only eagerly observing Yin Ren.
“Of course, I also have a favor to ask of you. How about we each take what we need and make a deal?”
“…Hmm, what should I do?”
Qi Xin’s fingers rubbed her lower lip, her tone full of playfulness. She toyed with the shards of glass on the table with her fingertips, but her delicate fingers showed no signs of any wounds.
“If I were to reveal secrets that should not be revealed, in human terms, I would be a ‘sinner to my race’. I still need to operate on the Other Side, and it wouldn’t be cost-effective to offend all of my kind for an immature cub.”
Zhong Chengshuo opened his mouth as if he wanted to speak, but Yin Ren gently shook his head at him.
“I only have two questions I want to ask.”
Yin Ren said.
“I guarantee you that these questions are very ordinary, and no one would suspect that it was you who asked them.”
Qi Xin stopped playing with the shards and said, “Go ahead, ask.”
“The first question: I know that recently, people who have gone missing have been sent to the Other Side. I want to know if, with the resources we currently have, we can rescue them?”
Yin Ren tapped his fingers on the armrest of the interrogation chair, his palms slightly sweaty. His tone was slow, attempting to make every word clear to Qi Xin.
“The second question… The corruption source of slight Evil Force shouldn’t have such a significant impact on the mortal realm. Behind the recent chaos, there must have been the intervention of your ‘friend’. What I want to ask is, if I can disrupt Sunken Society’s plans and kill your friend, would you be willing to cooperate with me?”
“You have few questions, but many doubts to clarify.” Qi Xin chuckled, but her smile was extremely stiff, like a mask carved by an amateur. “Indeed, these questions won’t cause me any trouble.”
Her neck extended once again, and her plain and lackluster face leaned toward Yin Ren.
“For the first question, you can save them. But a small suggestion, don’t use the pile of brains from just now… They have defects that will conveniently lead you astray from the correct answer.”
“For the second question, if you can kill Mr. Le, I am more than willing to cooperate with you. I will keep a close eye on you, little cub.”
With that, Qi Xin stood up, preparing to leave.
But just as she was about halfway through disappearing, her wrist was suddenly grabbed by someone with a loud snap.
“What is the meaning of this?” Ms. Qi Xin’s smile carried a hint of hidden anger as she looked at Zhong Chengshuo’s hand.
“These models are precious, valuable relics left behind by Zhong Chengshuo.” Zhong Chengshuo stated seriously. “You destroyed all of them, and you need to compensate.”
Qi Xin was straightforward. “How much?”
“It’s priceless and can only be exchanged for intelligence.” Zhong Chengshuo tightened his grip causing Qi Xin’s joints to crack. “Provide more information about saving people.”
Qi Xin raised her brows, and her expression gradually turned meaningful.
“It seems your understanding of the Other Side is still limited.” Qi Xin smiled uncomfortably. “Don’t you have a readily-made helper, Shian?”
After speaking, she broke each of Zhong Chengshuo’s fingers one by one and vanished into thin air.
The basement was once again a mess. The soy milk mixed with glass shards had turned cold. It was already 6:30 in the morning, they had no experiments to do, no time for a complete rest, and could only face the blown-up experimental equipment in sadness.
“Can those models be restored?” After a while, Yin Ren cautiously spoke.
“The basic data is backed up,” Zhong Chengshuo said gloomily, walking heavily towards Yin Ren. “But those instruments were specially made and very expensive.”
“You can use my bank card.”
Zhong Chengshuo glanced at Yin Ren, not saying a word. The emotions in his gaze were subtle, and even Yin Ren became disheartened.
“Alright, I understand. No need to say anything.”
So, it turned out that what was blown up just now was not only the precious models but also the fortune accumulated by King Yama over the years, far surpassing Shian’s compensation. Yin Ren’s tone was filled with infinite regret, almost tempting Qi Xin to come over again.
The two melancholic figures sat together on the chair, silently listening to the ticking of the second hand.
“We still have over two hours before work,” Yin Ren said.
“Yeah.”
“Is there still time to conduct any research or verification?”
“No materials.” Zhong Chengshuo rubbed the back of his head, and he spoke with a hint of bitterness in his tone.
It was rare to see him so listless. Yin Ren pondered for a moment, glanced at the clock, and suddenly had a brilliant idea. Wings rustled and covered the floor as Yin Ren leaned close to Zhong Chengshuo’s ear. There was a hint of amusement in his serious tone.
“It just suddenly occurred to me that we can still conduct a research study. Time might be a bit tight, but we should have enough time.”
Zhong Chengshuo turned his head with confusion. Yin Ren happened to lean in front of him, so their noses almost touched. Several warm wings gently brushed past him.
“Do you want to study whether the same species of Elementals can reproduce?”
……
As the memories faded, Yin Ren rubbed his slightly darkened eyes and looked at Unit 9 in front of him.
Lu Xiaohe wore an anxious expression. In just one day, she looked much more haggard. Yin Ren sighed inwardly and decided to make the hint more explicit—to ensure that they wouldn’t draw attention to Zhong Chengshuo, they needed to appear “normal.”
“Speaking of which, I still think this case is similar to the Bai Yongji case.” Yin Ren sat on the sofa in the office. “Although in that case, it was because I was accidentally… well, not entirely accidentally—kidnapped, that it was solved. Now, thinking back, this disappearance case clearly involves the Other Side. It’s unlikely that there has been no reaction from the higher-ups at Shian.”
Since Qi Xin asked them to seek help from Shian, there must be a reason behind it. For someone as clever as Lu Xiaohe, giving her a clue should be enough to prompt her.
Sure enough, Lu Xiaohe raised her face, stiff as a board, and a hint of light appeared in her lifeless eyes.
She seemed to recall something, and her lips trembled slightly.
“Encrypted report! The Bai Yongji case had an encrypted report from the Emergency Management Department… The number, let me think… SA8729948719.”
She murmured to herself and rushed to the console.
Today was different from the past. Now, Lu Xiaohe had the authority equivalent to that of the Emergency Management Department. She typed on the keyboard with great force, almost smashing it. In the silent gaze of everyone, she swiftly accessed that high-level report. Lu Xiaohe even forgot to enlarge the text, lowering her head and quickly scanning through the dense words.
One name that appeared multiple times quickly caught Lu Xiaohe’s attention.
Current Minister of Foreign Object Identification Department, Minister Jiao, Jiao Lian.
Twenty-eight years ago, during the Divine Descent incident, she was a “Charon” in the Emergency Management Department, dedicated to researching the Other Side. The report indicated that if they wanted to determine the victim’s location as soon as possible, they could seek help from Jiao Lian.
Lu Xiaohe swallowed her saliva.
Without discussing with any of her colleagues, she immediately called Fu Xingchuan.
“Minister Fu.”
Her voice was hoarse as she spoke.
“I think… No, this case requires the support of Minister Jiao.”
Fu Xingchuan, on the other end of the phone, remained silent for a long time. “Jiao Lian?”
“In the Bai Yongji case, she assisted Shian in locating the victims.” Lu Xiaohe tightly closed the office door and activated the speakerphone. “She can access the Other Side, right? As long as she can find the person, we will definitely…”
“Definitely what?” Fu Xingchuan’s tone was somewhat complicated.
“Definitely… definitely…” Lu Xiaohe choked up.
In the end, she pursed her lips and fell silent.
“In the Bai Yongji case, all the victims had only half of their bodies sent to the Other Side. In other words, they were all stuck in place. These people have completely entered the Other Side, so they naturally would move around before dying, making it difficult to track them.”
Fu Xingchuan sighed.
“I’ll be frank with you. When Minister Jiao searches for someone, she needs the precise thoughts of the missing person. And as long as the person is found, we can ‘pull them back’ through the remaining half of their body in the human world… Your cases have completely disappeared from the human realm, with no thoughts as clues. Even if we can find them, except for a true Charon, no one can bring people in and out of the other side.”
“But… But the previous Archive… the memory world…” Lu Xiaohe instinctively retorted.
“Those places are similar to interstitial spaces, but they’re not the real Other Side,” Fu Xingchuan patiently explained. “In Minister Jiao’s case… she can no longer send people to the Other Side. Personally, I think it’s better for you to search for the conditions that triggered the disappearances.”
Having experienced ups and downs, Lu Xiaohe slumped back in her chair, tears welling up in the corners of her eyes. She still held the phone in her hand, her mouth moving silently.
It seemed like she was saying, “Mom.”
On the other end of the phone, Fu Xingchuan didn’t hang up, patiently waiting for her to catch her breath.
“…I understand.” After about half a minute, Lu Xiaohe forced out a smile. “If Minister Jiao could easily find people, Minister Meng Huai wouldn’t have been out of touch for so long. I’m sorry, my mind was clouded, and I didn’t think it through.”
After speaking, she stared blankly at the screen of her phone. Fu Xingchuan didn’t say anything; the only change was the duration of the call with each passing second.
“The rear command shouldn’t act so recklessly. Perhaps I shouldn’t be in charge of this case. I should…”
Before she could utter a trembling “recluse”, Yin Ren snatched the phone from her hand.
“I also want to meet Minister Jiao,” Yin Ren said.
“Why?”
“Because I have a hypothesis that was halfway verified yesterday before the equipment was damaged. If we want to verify it more accurately, we can only ask for Minister Jiao’s help,” Yin Ren replied.
“…” Fu Xingchuan fell into silence for a long time. “If you just want to try to find someone again, I can tell you clearly, it’s useless. Every method you can think of to find someone has been tried before.”
“No, it’s not about finding someone. You’ll know when the time comes.”
……
In the dim room, the “blood and flesh wires” of the neural network crawled up the walls, and a malformed monster leaned against the headboard with frantically flickering screens embedded in its body. They were tangled together, and indecipherable patterns quickly flickered and changed on the screens. In front of the soft bedsheet, a phone was in the middle of a call.
Li Nian stood on the left, and Fu Xingchuan stood on the right, both beside the bed. Their expressions were unusually serious, with their gazes fixed on Yin Ren.
The air in the room was dry and pleasant, at a temperature that was most comfortable, yet Lu Xiaohe shivered. The “monster” in front of her emitted an oppressive feeling that was hard to bear, causing goosebumps to cover her entire body. Huang Jin and Ge Tingting, who were following behind her, were even more nervous. Ge Tingting plugged her ears, while Huang Jin didn’t know what he had seen and simply closed his eyes.
“Why did they ask us to come too?” he even muttered softly.
In front of Lu Xiaohe, Yin Ren stood with Zhong Chengshuo. He looked up at the glittering “pile of monitors” and fell silent.
“Alright, everyone.”
They stood in place as a synthesized voice sounded from the phone.
“I am, Jiao Lian. What do, you guys need?”
Yin Ren took a deep breath and took a step forward. “Hello, I am Zhong Yi. I believe you have heard of my name.”
The flickering on the screen stopped at that very moment. Even Fu Xingchuan turned his head, looking over with a hint of surprise.
“During the Divine Descent twenty-eight years ago, many people went missing. Now, due to the corruption caused by Evil Force, disappearances have occurred in Haigu once again. After studying these disappearance cases, we have a hypothesis.”
The flickering on the screen stopped at that very moment, and even Fu Xingchuan turned his head, looking over with a slightly surprised expression.
“Twenty-eight years ago during the Divine Descent, many people went missing. Now, in Haigu, there are once again disappearances caused by the corruption of Evil Force. After conducting research, we have a hypothesis regarding these disappearance cases.”
“……”
Jiao Lian remained silent, but her screen began to flicker again. It was clear that she was listening. This time, it was Professor Li Nian, who was usually as steady as Mount Tai, who turned his body and fixed his gaze on Yin Ren.
“All the missing individuals are mentally resilient. Most of them have good personalities; it’s simply an expression of their mental health and strength… This characteristic allows these people to survive longer on the Other Side.”
“Yes, they should go, ‘mad’ later. Going ‘mad’ later, means dying later.”
Jiao Lian finally responded, but her synthesized voice didn’t reveal any emotions.
“Just like me.”
Yin Ren hummed with a complicated mood. “These people were sent into the other side by Primordial Elementals. These beings enjoy consuming emotions. Perhaps there is some commonality in emotions among them… Unfortunately, my materials were damaged yesterday, and I couldn’t find that common point.”
He opened his palm, revealing a wooden talisman in his hand.
“I have another hypothesis that needs to be verified. Can you help me?”
“How can, I help?”
“Next, I will use this wooden talisman to influence the people around me.”
Yin Ren took a step back, his gaze sweeping around.
“The people here are relatively mentally resilient. I will conduct further experiments with them. I kindly request that you observe any activity on the Other Side… I believe that if we find the ‘trigger’ for the disappearances, there will definitely be a reaction on the Other Side. Please help me keep an eye out.”
Even Ms. Qi had to tear open a space to find food and accessing the Archive and Memory World required using magic and energy as mediums. People couldn’t pass through the cracks between the human realm and the Other Side without leaving traces.
In the face of these mind-boggling statements, everyone else remained silent, except for two individuals who spoke almost simultaneously.
Huang Jin: “Who are you going to experiment on?!”
Ge Tingting: “I’m willing to help Xiaohe Jie!”
The rest remained silent. With Ge Tingting’s response, Huang Jin couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed. Even so, he still firmly displayed his cowardice.
“It’s not me, but this person… This person must have had a problem while crossing the Other Side, which caused them to end up like this, right?” Huang Jin pointed at Jiao Lian on the bed with a pale face. “Her thoughts are fragmented and disjointed, but she’s still trying to hold on. There are many thoughts mixed in her that don’t belong to her, it looks incredibly… incredibly…”
Just like Frankenstein’s monster, stitched together from the corpses of various minds.
“I also want to save Lu Xiaohe’s mother, but I have people to take care of too. What if—what if that wooden talisman really…?”
“Then you can go last.” Ge Tingting reassured him with confidence. “With your bad personality, it probably won’t succeed.”
Huang Jin: “…”
“It’s okay. Once anything unusual happens, I will inform Zhong Yi and stop.” Jiao Lian’s voice came from the phone. Perhaps it was an illusion, but her voice had a faint hint of amusement. “Don’t be afraid, young man. I’m not trying to hold on, either.”
A low and mournful sound escaped from Huang Jin’s throat.
“Xiao Huang, if you don’t want to, you don’t have to participate.”
Lu Xiaohe stepped forward solemnly.
“It’s not your obligation, so you can completely refuse. It won’t change how I see you.”
Huang Jin: “I…”
His handsome face, now clouded, contorted slightly.
“Forget it. I have a bad personality. It’s fine.” He turned his head, keeping a distance. “It’s settled. I’ll go last.”
