Chapter 150: Surrender

The sky and earth were without light, while smoke rose and dust flew.

Jiang Youyue acted decisively, directing his spell at the group. He stood firm, with shadows resembling roots forming beneath his feet, and the magic in his hands was like that of an immortal descending; certainly not ordinary. The two giant deformed hands beside him slowly moved, and the shadowy roots spread out like puppets they were controlling.

The Imperial Preceptor seemed to stand within a semi-transparent dark chrysanthemum. The bizarre scene gave people goosebumps, and the thick hostility made breathing difficult.

Both Monk Juehui and Hua Jingchun were seasoned masters. With just one glance, they knew they couldn’t resist. They grabbed the disciple from the Yueshui Pavilion and quickly retreated. They were merely here as witnesses. If they ended up dead, the situation would become farcical.

Yin Ci and Shi Jingzhi were obviously aware of this, and they cautiously retreated, guarding the other three.

Jiang Youyue looked at Shi Jingzhi with a hint of admiration in his eyes. But that admiration seemed not directed at the person; the Imperial Preceptor looked as if he were admiring a particularly good fruit.

“You can resist the fear of imminent death and manage overwhelming doubt. Even when facing death, you remain vigilant. Truly a fine specimen. General Yin, shaping him to this extent, you’ve done us a great favor.”

With that, green light threads, like a soft spring rain, tangled with Shi Jingzhi’s golden flame. The flame seemed weakened by the rain, losing some of its vigor instantly. Yin Ci charged forward with his sword, unleashing a whirlwind-like sword technique. However, Jiang Youyue merely raised one hand, and countless soft roots formed a barrier, halting the sword’s qi.

“But General Yin doesn’t seem like a reckless man… This time, did you provoke Duanyun to draw me out and plan to destroy Jingzhi in front of us?”

Amidst the whirlpool of sword qi and golden flames, Jiang Youyue’s tone was calm and even carried a hint of amusement.

…It seemed quite reasonable.

Shi Jingzhi’s heart remained calm, but instinctively, his body broke out in cold sweat, even causing the flame in his hand to tremble. If he and Yin Ci didn’t have a deep relationship, he might have been persuaded to join the Immortal Assembly at this moment. However, the play had to be completed. Sect Master Shi wiped his lips and spat out a mouthful of blood.

Yin Ci stood in front of Shi Jingzhi, imperceptibly trembling as if suppressing an urge to turn around. Taking a deep breath, he lifted his sword again, saying, “I’ll deal with you first!”

However, this time, “fate” didn’t seem to favor the Kushan Sect.

Against Qu Duanyun, they were still dealing with a “human”. Now, they were facing Jiang Youyue, who was empowered by the Hanging Tree’s power—as the will of the Hanging Tree, the True Immortal didn’t need to appear in his true form; just lending a bit of power was enough to render the master and disciple helpless.

Jiang Youyue, with fluttering sleeves and surrounded by many root shadows, looked utterly calm and composed. The master and disciple seemed like old women trying to crack walnuts, finding no opportunities to strike. In terms of magical experience, Shi Jingzhi was inferior to him. In terms of energy and vigor, Yin Ci couldn’t match him. Even against his martial arts, all of Jiang Youyue’s weak points were protected by the roots of the Hanging Tree.

Yin Ci didn’t get discouraged, and his sword moves got faster. Shi Jingzhi stood behind him with golden flames dancing with the sword wind. Those semi-transparent root shadows broke and regrew time and time again. As long as there was a small mistake, multiple fine roots would form into weapons, piercing through his body in an instant. If they were a bit slower, the roots would thrust upwards, trying to tear Yin Ci in half.

With spells flying all around, Shi Jingzhi couldn’t afford any carelessness. Jiang Youyue’s attacks grew fiercer, forcing them to switch from offense to defense. They used the golden flames as a shield, barely protecting themselves. Seeing this defense, the “giant hands roots” surrounding Jiang Youyue twitched as if convulsing. Tiny roots rapidly spread across the ground, making the air increasingly cold and viscous. Soon, a feeling of weakness arose under everyone’s feet.

The barren ground was slowly engulfed by the fine roots, as if covered by a layer of semi-transparent dirty water. Silently, they engulfed everyone’s hands and feet, turning the area into a deadly quagmire.

As their vital qi continued to wane, this technique, although not as ruthless as the Invitation to God Formation, was enough to disrupt the battlefield.

Despite being under the protection of the Kushan Sect, Monk Juehui and Hua Jingchun couldn’t resist the influence of the Hanging Tree. They were quickly entangled by fully armed soldiers before they could escape, once again embroiled in the clash of blades.

In the distance, the clash between Taiheng and the imperial troops was deafening. Nearby, golden flames and ash were swept up by the sword wind, staining the wild grass red.

Like a mantis trying to stop a chariot or a mayfly shaking a tree, the situation grew increasingly dire, yet the master and disciple couldn’t harm the Imperial Preceptor at all.

Compared to Qu Duanyun, Jiang Youyue was a troublesome opponent. He didn’t toy with them or waste time needlessly. Seeing Shi Jingzhi’s persistent resistance, he quickly decided to cut through the mess, showing no mercy.

Even if the one he was facing was the carefully cultivated Child of Desire.

The absorption from the roots grew stronger. Affected by the Hanging Tree, Shi Jingzhi’s hands trembled for a moment. Just then, he was caught off guard, and was slashed in his right shoulder forming a deep gash. The cheap robe he wore was instantly torn, revealing the scarred skin underneath.

It looked as if someone had carved chunks of flesh from his chest and shoulder.

Shi Jingzhi gasped in pain, hastily pulling his clothing over the large scars. Yin Ci finally turned his head, giving Shi Jingzhi a particularly sharp look. The sharp intent in the swordplay increased, tinged with evident anger.

Jiang Youyue just smiled, his actions growing fiercer.

Involuntary reactions couldn’t deceive; the relationship between these two was apparently not good. As long as there was a gap in the heart, it was easy to exploit. The “quality” of Shi Jingzhi was established; they just needed to capture him and feed him the Shirou, and their Hundred-Year Project would be realized.

It was just one step away.

Qu Duanyun was entangled in a fight with Yan Qing and Shi Zhongyu. The Imperial Preceptor used the power of the Hanging Tree, and the Yan Shi duo were significantly affected; their bodies were riddled with wounds. The situation in the distance was also grim—the people of the Taiheng Sect were all righteous individuals who dared not hurt the imperial soldiers. In the midst of the chaotic battle, Kushan and Taiheng seemed on the brink of defeat.

Out of desperation, Shi Zhongyu had to intercept a sneaky officer, while Yan Qing continued his fight with Qu Duanyun, resulting in a stalemate.

“All of you were tricked by the people from the Kushan Sect.”

With his Qingwu Sword held horizontally, Qu Duanyun nearly slit Yan Qing’s throat. Surrounded by the faint shadows of roots, those scarlet ghost eyes seemed exceptionally piercing.

“Yin Zizhu is an immortal monster. Even if Shi Jingzhi dies by the blade, the True Immortal can save him. Only you will surely perish here. How can mortal power compete with the True Immortal?”

People always seemed to miss the bigger picture.

Once, Qu Duanyun also had such naive thoughts. However, his parents, not wanting him to be ignorant, sent him to remote places to see the world.

Sadly, he didn’t learn compassion but instead fostered a cold anger—in the Great Yun Dynasty, simply sowing seeds could yield crops, and any livestock could reproduce in time. Yet month after month, the people persisted in the most basic tasks, showing no progress.

Furthermore, whenever someone tried to rise, there were always others spreading rumors to pull them down.

…They were just like livestock, wasting precious resources.

“If we can’t compete with the True Immortal, then we can’t.” Yan Qing finally caught his breath, remaining calm. “Not being able to compete is one thing, waiting to die is another.”

“Waiting to die?”

Feeling frustrated, Qu Duanyun’s swordplay became even more aggressive. He focused on attacking Yan Qing, his voice cold as ice.

“Humans have different levels. For Great Yun, which is more important, the young and rising or the old and lazy? You’re not the latter, so why would you wait to die?”

“All humans will age.”

“So what? People like Sun Huajin accumulate wealth and can use medicine to live up to a hundred years,” Qu Duanyun replied with emphasis. “Young ones who don’t strive will have no money to prolong their lives in old age. That’s just the way of the world!”

Yan Qing remained silent, slowing down, his eyes fixed on Qu Duanyun.

Yan Qing rarely showed anger; even now, his expression was neutral, but his Sword of Compassion began to emit a heavy hum. He inhaled, and blood seeped from his wounds.

“Young Warrior Qu, you’re even more useless than I thought.”

“Useless?”

“On one hand, one possesses immense wealth, with every step offering a way out. On the other hand, when hands stop and mouths cease, one can see through the entirety of life… Doing the same work doesn’t mean ‘doing the same thing’.”

Yan Qing’s voice grew cold. His presence weighed down the surroundings that even the swaying roots seemed to calm. Using his sword as a shield, he blocked the rain-like attacks of the Guanwu sword without a tremor in his voice.

“You don’t worry about your parents above, nor about your future below. Of course, you dare to take risks… With all due respect, you’re merely a superficial observer. You don’t understand the real world, much less have the right to criticize.”

Qu Duanyun laughed coldly, with a hint of desperation in his swordplay. “You speak so righteously. Aren’t you the perfect example? Even when faced with the worst situations, you manage to pull yourself out—”

He was cut off by Yan Qing’s bitter laughter.

“I am indeed the perfect example.”

His aura converged, pushing away the Hanging Tree’s fine roots. Centered around Yan Qing, a clear circle emerged in the desolate land.

“If it weren’t for the coincidental death of my father, I would still be struggling in Xizhuang, working daily to care for him. By the time he passed, I would be approaching middle age, penniless… According to your reasoning, it would be natural for me to be devoured by that Hanging Tree without any support.”

“But you lost to me.”

Yan Qing’s voice became even calmer.

“Young Warrior Qu, by your standards, I fear half of it might be attributed to luck.”

Qu Duanyun’s eyes were tinged with bloodshot veins. “Luck? I’ve been fending for myself since I was young—”

“It doesn’t matter.” Yan Qing sighed, glancing at the dimming sun. “When the Immortal Assembly is completely uprooted by us, and the Qu Clan’s reputation is tarnished because of you, you’ll understand.”

Just as Qu Duanyun was about to retort, he was rendered speechless. In a fit of rage, his aura exploded uncontrollably.

“You all preach about loyalty and justice daily. Do you intend to continue rebelling? The imperial soldiers are here. I want to see how you, the righteous leader, can win!”

Hours had passed. This place was an obvious anomaly, and the scattered soldiers were slowly regrouping. The Kushan Sect was just putting on a tough front; at this moment, what the Immortal Assembly should be worried about wasn’t failure but how to win more cleanly.

While Qu Duanyun was deep in thought, Yan Qing raised his Sword of Compassion high.

Yan Qing gathered all his qi, but he didn’t attack Qu Duanyun nor the soldiers. With the blade pointing downward, the heavy, dark sword was deeply thrust into the wasteland. The tombstone-like great sword caused a burst of shockwaves, causing both the spirit and the earth to tremble.

“Sect Master, it’s time!” Yan Qing took a deep breath, raising his voice.

Before Qu Duanyun could recover from his anger and confusion, he was taken aback. “What time…”

Before he could finish, the ground trembled once more, as if responding to the previous heavy sword strike. A team rapidly approached from the distance, their figures not yet clear but a thick murderous aura already rolling in. From their disorderly charge, it was evident that they were members of the demonic sect.

At the same time, a familiar wave of magic emanated from Jiang Youyue, as if someone had sent an urgent message in the word cloth—

The cloth ignited without flame, and a panicked voice burst from Jiang Youyue’s chest. The voice was thin and sharp, unmistakably belonging to the eunuch, Lu Fu.

“Lord Jiang,” Lu Fu exclaimed in a panic, “The Emperor, he, he, he—”

Is he dead?

Qu Duanyun halted his sword.

It didn’t matter if he was dead. If Shi Jingzhi failed, they would simply prop up Xu Jingming, that useless trash, and have the Imperial Preceptor’s lineage take over as regents. Raising another prince only required ten to twenty years; there was no need for such panic.

There were many organisms and minerals that were harmful to the Hanging Tree, but in the past three hundred years, they were all eradicated by the Immortal Assembly. The only “troublemaker”, Yin Zizhu, was also under their watch, waiting to be dealt with. There was nothing in the world that could threaten the Hanging Tree unless…

“The Emperor has surrendered to Luojiu! He surrendered behind our backs!!!”

The old eunuch exclaimed; his voice hoarse with a crying tone.

Kinky Thoughts:

Qu Duanyun teaches us a good lesson about not judging others superficially. Being born with luck in the Qu Clan, he has the support, power, and wealth to make the decisions he made. Rather than learning humility and compassion when his parents sent him out into the world, he instead became more ignorant.

This reminds me of a comment I once read online. “We’re all running a race, but some people get a head start and have on shoes while others are running barefoot.”

Chapter 65

The long-awaited dating course had finally arrived—

“What do you mean? Who’s looking forward to it?” Ling Xiao, who was forcefully driven out of the training ground, was unhappy. Today’s lesson was about the use of primary elemental soul crystals. He was originally having fun tossing large fireballs with his friends, but as soon as the time came, he was ruthlessly expelled by the instructor.

Why couldn’t he study like the other students and instead have to go on a date?

Furthermore, this class didn’t have instructors, textbooks, or even reference materials. How was he supposed to go about this dating lesson?

Confused, Ling Xiao decided to ask for help from Yu Ji, whose emotional value was even less than theirs.

“What are you guys planning to do?”

Yu Ji, slightly embarrassed, replied, “He said he wants to go back to the dormitory and sleep. I couldn’t argue with him.”

Ling Xiao twitched at the corner of his mouth. Was this supposed to be a way of cultivating emotional connection?

“What about us?” He asked Ying Feng. “Just to clarify, I don’t want to go back and sleep.”

Ying Feng pulled out a long list. “This is the information I found online and in the library: ’99 Things Lovers Should Do’ and ’50 Places Couples Must Visit’.”

Ling Xiao: ……

How could he forget that Ying Feng was a top student and would diligently complete every task assigned by the teacher?

Mechanically, Ling Xiao read through the list from beginning to end. By the end, his expression had turned stiff. What were these suggestions?

Watching movies (which was pretty standard), candlelight dinner, shared hot spring bath, buying lingerie together, adopting a pet, using the Qizhu skill “Release” in public (What’s that?), playing a day-long Qizhu and Qizi identity swap game (Oh, that sounds interesting)…

No way! None of these were good!

Ling Xiao threw away the list. “Who dates by following a book?”

Ying Feng’s expression remained unchanged. “Then what’s your suggestion?”

After pondering for a moment, Ling Xiao had an idea. “I got it!”

Special commodity trading zone.

“Hello, this is the Soul Crystal Trading Street. Only those with the appropriate credentials can enter. Please show your personal terminal.”

They extended their wrists for scanning. “Ah, students from the Royal Sky Military Academy. Welcome.”

It was the first time both had come to this place. Apart from soul crystal shops, there were trading stalls for people to exchange soul crystals, raw material wholesale shops, virtual soul crystal trial points, arenas, casinos where one could exchange chips for soul crystals, and a variety of adventure projects.

“Hey, would you like to gamble on the ‘Creation from Nothing’ soul crystal? As long as your mental power reaches level one, you can activate it.”

“What is that?”

“‘Creation from Nothing’ allows you to obtain a random item after activation. It might be valuable, or it might be worthless. It’s all about luck.”

Ling Xiao was intrigued and asked Ying Feng, “Shall we try?”

Ying Feng took out a magnetic card. “Two, please.”

“Thank you for your patronage!”

Ying Feng tried first and got a card.

The merchant inspected the card. “Congratulations, this is a game voucher. You can use it at any adventure game shop on this street. This card’s value is three times that of the ‘Creation from Nothing’ soul crystal. You’ve made a profit!”

“Now it’s my turn,” Ling Xiao said and focused. He activated his crystal, and a white light appeared. When it faded, he found himself holding an object.

All three: ……

Ling Xiao was exasperated. “Why a banana? Why did he get a voucher and I got a banana?”

The merchant replied innocently, “Items appear at random. Some even get rocks or feathers. We can’t control it.”

Ying Feng, seeing Ling Xiao’s frustration, dragged him away to save the poor merchant.

“At least I didn’t get a banana peel,” Ling Xiao grumbled as he ate the banana, but his mood didn’t improve.

“Let’s use the voucher to play a game.”

They entered the nearest game shop.

“For the free voucher, you can only play the ‘Couple’s Quiz Game’. If you want the adventure combat game, it’s an extra charge.”

“We want an adventure game.”

“We’ll take the ‘Couple’s Quiz Game’,” Ying Feng’s voice interrupted from behind.

“Why?” Ling Xiao raised his voice.

“Did you forget our afternoon class?”

…Top students are so annoying!

Ling Xiao gave in, “Fine, quiz game it is.”

“We have a new quiz game from Earth. Want to try it?”

“Earth? What game?”

“It has a long title: ‘When the World Wants You Together and You Don’t, Fate Wants to Keep You Apart When You Want to be Together’.”

“That’s so long! Why are Earthlings so verbose?”

“We’ll take it,” Ying Feng said, not wanting to debate.

“This way, please.”

The store clerk led them to the entrance. “Let me explain the game rules briefly. In this game, we use a magnetic pole setup. The initial magnetic poles are opposite. If your opinions clash, the poles will reverse, and both of you will be penalized. The penalties get heavier with each discrepancy. Only when your opinions align will the poles revert.”

“Each of you has the right to use ‘objection’ once. Using an objection allows you to skip a question you don’t want to answer. But after the game, you’ll receive a minor penalty for each objection used.”

“If you pass the game successfully, you’ll receive a gift from our store, which is unique and can’t be found elsewhere. Good luck! Oh, I forgot to mention, since this is an imported game, we’ve localized some aspects. But some questions couldn’t be changed, so you might find some questions hard to understand. Just choose an answer randomly.”

“It seems like a complex game,” Ling Xiao said, forgetting the beginning after hearing the end.

“You’ll understand once we start.”

The two entered the game room, and a female voice rang out:

“I am the commentator NPC for this session. Only the two of you are participating, and all your answers are strictly confidential. No third party will know. Are you ready?”

“Ready.”

“Then, let the game begin.”

“Ah!” Ling Xiao shouted, crashing into Ying Feng beside him. “What happened?”

It took Ying Feng a lot of effort to push Ling Xiao off him. “Look at your chest.”

Ling Xiao looked down and saw a letter N on his chest, while Yin Feng had an S in the same position.

“So this is the magnetic pole setup. What do we do now? We can’t even walk like this.”

Ying Feng tried to move. “As long as our bodies touch, we won’t be pulled together like before.”

“Let’s hold hands then.” Ling Xiao couldn’t think of another solution.

Ahead was a long corridor. As they walked hand in hand, Ling Xiao felt more and more awkward. Why did he feel nervous holding hands, even though they had been more intimate before?

“We’re here,” Yin Feng said, pulling him back from his thoughts. They had reached the first quiz checkpoint.

“Now, the first question. Choose wisely.”

“Do you want to play: A, Easy mode; B, Hard mode?”

“What’s the difference?” Ying Feng asked.

“Hard mode has harder questions and harsher penalties. You can’t quit unless you fail. But the rewards for passing are greater.”

Yin Feng: “A.”

Ling Xiao: “B.”

Both: ……

“We’re playing for the first time, and we don’t know what’s coming next. It’s safer to start with easy mode.”

“But games are about challenges! What’s the fun in playing easy? I want to play hard mode.”

“Please confirm your answer quickly, or both of you will be penalized.”

“Fine,” Ying Feng conceded. “B it is.”

Suddenly, the floor disappeared, and they dropped into a new space.

“Next question: Do you prefer your tofu pudding to be: A, sweet; or B, savory?”

Both: ……

“What’s tofu pudding?”

“It sounds like food. Remember the clerk said some parts of the game aren’t localized? This might be it.”

“Oh, let’s pick randomly then.”

“Okay.”

Ling Xiao: “A.”

Ying Feng: “B.”

Both: ……

“Why B?”

“I don’t like sweets.”

“But you don’t even know what tofu pudding is! What if it’s inherently sweet?”

“Then there’s no reason to ask if it’s sweet or savory.”

“How do you know there aren’t savory sweets?”

NPC: “Please confirm your answer quickly.”

Silence.

“Fine, whatever. I’ll go with A,” Ying Feng compromised.

“Answer confirmed. You’ve passed.”

“I don’t want more stupid questions. Give us something harder,” Ling Xiao shouted.

“Next question: Is everything possible? A, Yes; B, No.”

Ling Xiao: “A.”

Yin Feng: “B.”

“Why?!”

Ying Feng calmly explained, “If you say ‘yes’, they might ask if it’s possible for something to be impossible. If you say it’s possible, then something is definitely impossible, contradicting the ‘everything is possible’. If you say it’s not possible, that also contradicts ‘everything is possible’.”

Ling Xiao: “…I didn’t get any of that, but, B!”

“Answer confirmed. You’ve passed.”

“The next question is a very famous moral dilemma from Earth. Please watch the explanation on the screen.”

In front of them, a projection of a train appeared. There was a fork in the track ahead of the train. On the track where the train was moving, ten people were playing, while on the other track, there was only one person.

“The people you see on the screen now are five- to six-year-old children from Earth, which are our early forms. The track on the left is abandoned, and the one on the right is strictly forbidden for anyone to stay. The train is about to reach the fork. As the person who can change the track, would you let the train continue and hit the ten children who violated the rules, or change the track and hit the one who obeyed? A. Change track; B. Don’t change.”

“I choose C. Change the track and then teleport to save one child.”

“Unfortunately, Earthlings do not have this capability. Please select again.”

“I choose B.” Ying Feng said.

“Why?”

“Rules are rules. We cannot punish those who obey just because there are more rulebreakers. What’s the point of such rules?”

“Do rules matter more than life? Those are ten children, ten souls. They will vanish if they die.”

“Please finalize your answer soon.”

Ling Xiao: “I object.”

“Are you sure you want to use your objection? It’s your only chance, and you’ll be punished after the game.”

“I’m sure. Both sides involve lives. I don’t want to choose either.”

“Objection accepted. Skipping this question. Next question.”

On the screen, the child on the abandoned track disappeared and was replaced by another person. The expressions of Ying Feng and Ling Xiao both changed to some extent.

“Now, the person you see on the screen has changed. Each of you sees the other. The same question applies: if you don’t change the track, the child will get hit. If you change it, your other half will get hit. Choose: A. Change track; B. Don’t change.”

Ling Xiao & Ying Feng: “A.”

“This is the first time you two have agreed since starting the game. Even the player who insisted on rules has now abandoned them. Do you not care about each other’s lives?”

Ling Xiao responded seriously, “I have vowed to protect children with my life. Even if that person is me, I will still choose A. I believe Ying Feng would make the same decision, so his choice is my answer.”

“That concludes this question. Next question: If a weak person you dislike is in danger, would you help? A. Yes; B. No.”

Ling Xiao & Ying Feng: “A.”

“If helping this person could potentially put you in danger, would you help? A. Yes; B. No.”

Ying Feng: “B.”

Ling Xiao: “It’s just a possibility, not a certainty, right?”

“Please answer quickly.”

“B.”

“If helping someone you dislike endangers someone you like, would you help? A. Yes; B. No.”

Ling Xiao & Ying Feng: “B.”

“Conversely, if the one needing help is someone you like, but helping them will certainly endanger and even kill someone you dislike, would you help? A. Yes; B. No.”

Ying Feng: “A.”

Ling Xiao: “…A.”

“Why the hesitation?”

“Because the person I dislike might be someone someone else likes… Never mind, I was just saying.”

“If both are people you like, one is your friend and the other your lover, helping one means losing the other, would you help? A. Yes; B. No.”

“What kind of crazy question is that? I refuse to answer!”

“I’m sorry, you’ve already used up your objection.”

“Use yours,” Ling Xiao said to Ying Feng.

“I don’t want to use it yet. I choose B. I don’t have friends.”

“You say it as if you have a lover.”

NPC: “Please make a choice quickly.”

“I choose A. I don’t have a lover!”

“Are you sure?”

“Sure!”

“Reversing polarity.”

Suddenly, Ling Xiao was thrown out, and the floor on the other side collapsed, revealing molten lava beneath.

Ying Feng clenched his hand and found that the Qizi Summoning had no effect here. He immediately leaped over and grabbed Ling Xiao’s hand. The two hung off the cliff with a great repelling force trying to separate them.

“A friendly reminder: this is a virtual game. You won’t get truly hurt, but there will be a pain sensation. If someone falls, they will endure five minutes of scorching pain. This is the punishment for different opinions. If you want to avoid the punishment, just change your answer.”

As Ling Xiao slowly descended, he realized that even if this was fake, he didn’t want to fall into the lava. But the repelling force from the magnetic polarity was too strong. Right now, both of their chest symbols read “S”. If this continued, Ying Feng would soon lose his grip.

“I…”

With a grunt of effort, Ying Feng swung Ling Xiao away from the lava. But due to the force, Ying Feng himself fell off the cliff. As they got farther apart, Ling Xiao watched as Ying Feng was about to fall into the lava.

“I choose B!”

Bang—the lava disappeared, and the letter on Ling Xiao’s chest reverted to “N”. The two, suspended in midair, collided and then landed on the ground, entwined.

“That hurt.”

Ling Xiao rubbed his forehead. The collision was real and had given him a headache.

“This game is too twisted. I’m not playing anymore.”

“Sorry, you chose the hard mode. It can’t be manually terminated.”

“How can it be terminated?”

“After three different choices and three punishments, the game will be deemed a failure.”

“…This is such a scam!”

“Are you ready for the next question?”

Ying Feng held Ling Xiao’s hand and got up. “Since you’ve chosen the hard mode, let’s play seriously till the end. We have two more chances.”

Ling Xiao took a deep breath. “Let’s continue!”

“Next question: If your most respected mentor seeks your help, but it’s against your moral principles, would you: A. Help; B. Not help.”

Ling Xiao & Ying Feng: “B.”

“If there’s something you’ve always longed for, but obtaining it would mean betraying your morals, would you choose: A. Get it; B. Give it up.”

Ling Xiao & Ying Feng: “B.”

“If there are two people standing in front of you now and you can only choose one with the other one dying, would you choose: A. Lover from your past life; B. Partner from this life.”

Ling Xiao’s expression tightened. He quickly turned his head, wondering, ‘Ying Feng, what would you choose?’

Kinky Thoughts:

The train problem in this chapter comes from the Trolley Problem. It is an ethical dilemma where you’re presented with a problem of whether to sacrifice one person to save a larger number.

There is a runaway trolley barreling down the tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever, the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person on the sidetrack. You have two (and only two) options:

  1. Do nothing, in which case the trolley will kill the five people on the main track.
  2. Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the sidetrack where it will kill one person.

Which is the more ethical option? Or, more simply: What is the right thing to do?

Chapter 67

The bright red rose was unparalleled in its charm and loved by countless people.

Sarah shone as brilliantly as a rose, wanting to be loved by all just like it. She relished the attention and adored being on top, controlling everything.

The rose taught her to enjoy attention and care, but it also taught her a lesson—it would wither.

A wilted flower was no longer loved.

An aging beauty would also lose favor.

Why does everything experience cycles of prosperity and decline? Why does prosperity inevitably lead to decline?

Why must beauty fade? Do all heroes eventually meet their end?

Why is health always accompanied by illness?

Why can’t the human body coexist peacefully with all viruses and bacteria?

Why are the boundaries between all species so clearly defined?

Is there a way to break these boundaries and control everything?

The universe began with the Big Bang*.

*Physical theory that describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of high density and temperature.

The world was born out of nothingness.

In the distant beginning, the world was chaotic.

Everything emerged from this chaos. The Eastern philosophy told of the Taiji* producing the two primary forces, which then gave rise to the four elements, which in turn gave rise to everything. The same principle applied.

*Chinese philosophical cosmological term for the “Supreme Ultimate” state of the world and affairs—the interaction of matter and space, the relation of the body and mind.

So, why couldn’t it be reversed?

Why couldn’t everything return to its original state of chaos?

It should be this way.

All things in the world should be unified.

When everything became one, Sarah believed she could reign over it all.

She would be the universe and everything in it.

The world’s tides and blooms would be subject to her whims; flowers would bloom and wither at her command.

She wanted to become the god of this world and achieve true eternity.

The rose had accompanied Sarah for years. Now, as Zhou Qian looks at the vibrant rose, he not only extracts memories of Sarah from it but also seems to resonate with her on some level, understanding her thoughts more easily.

At this moment, Zhou Qian and all the players received a system notification.

[Players have collected a memory fragment: “Sarah’s Legs”.]

[Memory Fragment Progress: 2/4]

Beside him, Wu Ren took a moment to process what Zhou Qian was saying. “Merge? Holy… What…”

Zhou Qian replied, “At first, I thought that when Ryan cross-dressed, he used a voice changer and contact lenses for his eyes. Now I realize that they might be some sort of symbiotic entity. If we stretch our imagination further—”

“His eyes can change color at will, and his body can switch between male and female.”

Wu Ren exclaimed, “Change body at will? Wait, isn’t that a bit exaggerated? We can’t control our body mutations, but if he’s really like you said… Does he have a key to change his genes at will?”

“Perhaps that’s the secret about him we’re looking for,” Zhou Qian speculated. “The only question now is, with Ryan and Sarah’s bodies merged, what about their minds?”

Wu Ren pondered and said, “These two siblings… have distinct thoughts and personalities, almost polar opposites. From the memories we’ve seen, the brother is more normal, gentle, and kind-hearted.”

“As for the sister, she’s more fanatical and obsessive, wanting power and control over others. Given her fanaticism, I feel she dominates their shared body. But—”

“The current ‘Mayor Ryan’ seems to be doing good deeds, like building barriers to protect the townspeople… So, maybe he retains both personalities.”

Zhou Qian reflected for a moment. “There are several possibilities. First, after their bodies merged, their brains might have combined to form a new consciousness. Second, all of this might be Sarah’s plot. She wants to reign supreme, so she might have found a way to always keep her consciousness dominant.”

Pausing for a moment, Zhou Qian added, “Based on the information from the rose, I lean towards the second possibility. Regardless of the scenario, if we let things progress, we’ll lose our willpower. We can’t let her succeed.”

……

Leaving the vicinity of the rose, Zhou Qian and Wu Ren continued eastward.

After a while, they reached a cliff. Sensing something amiss, Zhou Qian peered down and, sure enough, found Qi Liuxing and Ke Yuxiao lying at the bottom.

Using the flying rope, Zhou Qian quickly reached the bottom of the cliff to check on the condition of the two people. Fortunately, the cliff wasn’t very high. Luckily, both of them had worn armor and helmets as soon as they entered this instance, so their HP both dropped to around 30%, and they weren’t in mortal danger.

After waking the two up, Zhou Qian immediately asked them what they had encountered before the wetland. According to Qi Liuxing, as he walked towards the wetland, he suddenly saw Zhou Qian running frantically towards the east.

Qi Liuxing, unsure of what was happening with Zhou Qian and out of concern, quickly followed him. To his surprise, he stepped into a void and fell off the cliff, knocking himself unconscious.

Upon hearing this, Zhou Qian revealed a relieved smile. He looked at Qi Liuxing and said, “It seems the wetland can make people see their most terrifying memories. Have you ever dreamt of me falling off a cliff? So this became your worst fear? So you were really worried about me. I’m touched.”

Qi Liuxing sincerely replied, “I think you’re overthinking it. I just had a hallucination.”

“Brother Sword God is the most tsundere.”

Zhou Qian chuckled, then turned to Ke Yuxiao. “What about you? Did you fall off the cliff because of me as well?”

Ke Yuxiao replied with equal sincerity, “Qian Ge, you’re overthinking. It seems Xiao Qi was the first to be trapped in the illusion. I was fine at that moment. I just saw him suddenly run eastward and chased after him. But later on the way, I too experienced a hallucination.”

“I’ve mentioned before, I had depression, so… I won’t go into detail, but I remembered a terrible past experience. I thought I was standing on a rooftop. Feeling desolate, I jumped off, not realizing it was a trap.”

Hearing this, Qi Liuxing looked at Ke Yuxiao with concern.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.” Ke Yuxiao shook his head.

Zhou Qian was about to jest again when a thought crossed his mind.

Ke Yuxiao’s expression doesn’t seem right. Should I ask more? But that’s his private matter; maybe I shouldn’t pry? Yet, it seemed he tried to ‘end his life’ in that illusion. This isn’t right. How can I help him if I don’t understand?

It seemed like something Qi Liuxing might say. But he hadn’t spoken. How could Zhou Qian hear his thoughts?

This should be something Qi Liuxing would say. But he didn’t speak, so how could he hear him?

As he thought this, another phrase suddenly popped into Zhou Qian’s mind. I wasn’t actually trying to kill myself just now. I’m really okay. It’s all in the past. But it seems like Xiao Qi is really worried about me? I’ll have to explain it to him properly later…

This voice, however, was in the tone of Ke Yuxiao.

Can I hear their thoughts?

Could it be that all of us…

Wait, if I’m hearing Ke Yuxiao’s thoughts directly, it means… everything he just said is true.

With this realization, all hints of a smile vanished from Zhou Qian’s face, replaced by a serious demeanor.

Zhou Qian had never fully trusted Ke Yuxiao.

His earlier teasing was actually an attempt to probe Ke Yuxiao. He was desperate to know what had happened to Qi Liuxing and Ke Yuxiao that led them both to the bottom of the eastern cliff during the illusion.

He didn’t believe it was a mere coincidence. It seemed more like a well-crafted setup.

Zhou Qian’s suspicion was consistent—the Peach Blossom Legion wouldn’t use the “Gourd kids saving their grandfather” method against him.

After Situ Qing failed and they had a sufficient understanding of him, they would definitely make a big move, ensuring that their plan to kill him was foolproof.

Simply relying on Yin Jiujiu and Zhu Qiang wasn’t enough to take down Zhou Qian; the Peach Blossom Legion knew this. With the knowledge that Yin Jiujiu was merely a pawn, Zhou Qian became even more suspicious. Besides Zhu Qiang, there must be other members of the Peach Blossom Legion among his team.

If that person wasn’t Wu Ren, then it could only be Ke Yuxiao.

Given the strength of the Peach Blossom Legion, it was possible for them to find Yin Jiujiu, who bears a grudge against Situ Qing. Knowing that Qi Liuxing was recruited by Zhou Qian, they targeted Qi Liuxing and possibly embedded a mole, Ke Yuxiao, into the team.

Moreover, the series of plots later orchestrated by Zhu Qiang made Zhou Qian even more suspicious of Ke Yuxiao.

The trap in this level’s wetland area was essentially the Peach Blossom Legion’s trump card. In fact, their use of Yin Jiujiu points exactly to this. If Yin Jiujiu could kill Situ Qing, that would be best, removing a threat and leaving Zhou Qian with one less ally.

But even if Yin Jiujiu failed, it wouldn’t matter; their sole aim was to force Zhou Qian to choose the most dangerous path in the middle to prevent Yin Jiujiu and Situ Qing from fighting each other.

Therefore, the Peach Blossom Legion’s grand setup was to ensnare Zhou Qian into the swamp in his dream.

They would want to ensure that this setup is foolproof. But how could it be foolproof if Qi Liuxing and Ke Yuxiao were always with Zhou Qian?

Why did all three of them fall into the dream at the same time?

Why did Zhou Qian find them both missing when he looked back?

Zhou Qian couldn’t help but suspect that Ke Yuxiao was also a pawn of the Peach Blossom Legion. Perhaps he tampered with Qi Liuxing covertly, leading him eastward and ultimately off a cliff.

With Ke Yuxiao as their pawn, the Peach Blossom Legion’s plan could be deemed complete. Their only miscalculation was not anticipating that mutated players could control plants and animals due to their insufficient information about the instance.

Thus, Zhou Qian believed his suspicions of Ke Yuxiao were entirely justified. But at this moment, he could suddenly hear Ke Yuxiao’s inner thoughts. Ke Yuxiao had actually chosen to jump off the roof to commit suicide because of past trauma.

From the looks of it, Ke Yuxiao probably couldn’t lie under these circumstances.

So, he was innocent?

Could it be that Zhu Qiang had laid other tools in advance, leading Ke Yuxiao and Qi Liuxing towards the eastern cliff, so they wouldn’t save Zhou Qian when he entered the swamp?

But now, with Zhu Qiang dead, Zhou Qian couldn’t inquire further. Even if Zhu Qiang was alive, Zhou Qian doubted he’d get any answers.

Zhu Qiang, consumed by hatred, would hide everything Zhou Qian wanted to know, including matters about Ke Yuxiao as well as the whereabouts of Situ Qing and Yin Jiujiu.

Thinking of these matters, Zhou Qian unconsciously furrowed his brows. Unexpectedly, when he glanced up, he noticed Ke Yuxiao looking back at him with a slight frown, while Qi Liuxing had a face full of disapproval.

Blinking, Zhou Qian then looked at Wu Ren, who had an expression that read, “I’m embarrassed for you.”

Now, with everyone able to share thoughts, everyone else had naturally become aware of Zhou Qian’s earlier suspicions of Ke Yuxiao.

However, Zhou Qian fully embraced the principle of “as long as he isn’t embarrassed, others are”. So, acting as if nothing had happened, he bypassed the cliff and continued walking east.

“All these rules about killing to steal life points, accumulating 24 points, and draining your MP after a kill are just system tricks. What’s the point of schemes when our thoughts are connected?”

“Let’s first head to A11 for a ‘recharge’, then search for the two girls. Zhu Qiang probably knew he couldn’t clear the game alone, so he didn’t kill them. We need to get out of here as quickly as possible.”

Moments later, the four male players headed east, first stopping at Station A11 to replenish their life points. Then they moved to Station A13 in the west, trying to find clues about the two girls’ whereabouts.

The ground inside the station was wet, with a clear scent of alcohol. It could be deduced that Situ Qing and Yin Jiujiu had been there. Not knowing where the two had gone, they started searching nearby.

Since the four were walking far apart without physical contact, they hadn’t experienced the “merging” situation that Yin Jiujiu and Situ Qing had.

Circling Station A13, Zhou Qian discovered a tower 300 meters away, hidden behind tall trees. He almost immediately speculated that the two girls might be there.

Compared to Situ Qing and Yin Jiujiu, Zhu Qiang was far inferior in combat*.

*Fight against a five scum/trash (战五渣) This is a reference to Dragon Ball where Raditz first land on Earth and, using his combat analysis lens, measures a farmer with a combat power of only 5 (the scum in this case basically means a five combat powered trash). It’s now slang used to refer to someone who performs poorly in battles or competitions.

It was unlikely he’d confront them directly, even if he wanted to capitalize on their conflict. His main goal was to prevent them from aiding Zhou Qian. He needed to quickly check on Zhou Qian’s situation, so he wouldn’t waste too much time and energy on them.

Thus, Zhu Qiang probably used a teleportation tool, setting a trap to relocate the girls and temporarily confine them somewhere.

The next step was to think about where Zhu Qiang would choose to trap them.

He likely received a lot of information on the instance through the Peach Blossom Legion. He probably also knew where the core secrets of the instance were.

But such places were usually very dangerous, so he’d need someone to scout and assess the risks.

Therefore, Zhu Qiang’s strategy was likely to kill two birds with one stone—transfer Situ Qing and Yin Jiujiu to the place closest to the truth to scout and take risks, while also ensuring they were trapped there, with no chance of aiding Zhou Qian.

Finally, the tower 300 meters away was the only man-made structure they had seen since entering the walled area, apart from the “Evil Spirit Purification Stations”. Given its elevated location, it was likely the secret research base, the place “closest to the core truth”.

Considering everything, the probability of the two girls being in the tower was very high.

All of these thoughts flashed through Zhou Qian’s mind in an instant. Just as he was about to voice his suggestions, he heard voices in his mind.

Qi Liuxing: So that’s how Qian Ge thinks… He’s so quick; I almost couldn’t keep up.

Ke Yuxiao: I agree with his perspective.

Wu Ren: Zhu Qiang is that Li Buhui, right? This guy has a dark heart. However, since Zhou Qian could guess his intentions, Zhou Qian is probably just as dark. Haa, people these days—their schemes are just too dirty.

Zhou Qian: “……”

In that moment, he had two thoughts.

First: This instance is really annoying.

Second: Well… Hiss? I kind of wanted to experience this with Bai Zhou. I really want to know what he’s thinking. If only I could see his memories. Hmm, I wonder what I look like in his memories?

Then several thoughts popped up in Zhou Qian’s head—

Qi Liuxing: What’s the deal between him and that Bai Zhou guy?

Ke Yuxiao: Xiao Qi, you’re too young to think about this.

Qi Liuxing: ??? But when he last met Bai Zhou, he was younger than I am now.

Ke Yuxiao: Oh, so Zhou Qian had an early romance. Don’t follow in his footsteps.

Wu Ren: Bai Zhou? Early romance? Who had an early romance? What are you guys talking about?

Zhou Qian: “………”

Wu Ren: Oh, it seems Zhou Qian is getting angry. But he shouldn’t think of scheming against us. Now we can directly hear his thoughts. Hahaha…

Zhou Qian smiled faintly. “Then I’ll take care of you outside.”

Wu Ren, Qi Liuxing, Ke Yuxiao: “……”

……

Ten minutes later, the four of them arrived in front of a tall tower.

The metal door on the first floor of the tower was wide open, so the four of them walked in without any hindrance.

Inside, they found the hall empty. There was a spiral staircase to one side and an elevator in the middle.

Suddenly, with a “ding”, the elevator doors opened.

Wu Ren, being the main attacker, immediately made a move.

A steel needle appeared out of thin air, aiming towards the elevator. In case a monster came out, the needle would attack it immediately.

However, as the doors opened and he saw what was inside, Wu Ren quickly retracted the needle.

Though, strictly speaking, what appeared from the elevator could be described as a “monster”.

Inside the elevator were Situ Qing and Yin Jiujiu. However, their legs and arms were now fused together, sharing three legs and three arms between them. Their hands had transformed into cat paws, complete with pink pads. The paws themselves looked cute, but the combined appearance was quite eerie. What made it even more bizarre was that they were both covered in a net.

The Sky Net was indestructible, but fortunately, items in this game had a time limit. Once the time limit passed, they wouldn’t be separated, but at least they wouldn’t be bound by the net.

Zhou Qian asked, “Did you come from above or below?”

Yin Jiujiu replied, “From below. After finding the elevator, we didn’t dare to go further down. We saw that we could come up to the first floor, so we decided to try it. We didn’t expect to run into you.”

Hearing this, Zhou Qian checked the elevator panel and found that the tower had a total of 12 floors above and two below.

Yin Jiujiu and Situ Qing had been on the negative first floor, where there was only a cat and nothing else. They came up to the first floor after finding the elevator. It’s unknown what’s on the negative second floor.

In the end, the six players decided to go to the top of the tower together.

They all took the elevator to the top floor. As the elevator doors opened, they found that they couldn’t step out. The entire floor was covered in huge spikes, which, upon closer examination, were giant cacti.

After a quick glance outside, Zhou Qian looked at the elevator buttons. He pressed one with a door opening icon, ensuring the elevator doors would stay open.

Sticking his head out for a closer look and then returning inside the elevator, Zhou Qian said, “According to what Yin Jiujiu and Situ Qing said, the cat that Ryan and Sarah have raised since they were kids was put here… So, as expected, this is the core area.”

“Sarah needed to stay here for a long time to conduct experiments, so she brought the cat for company. However, maybe because the cat mutated, she didn’t want others to know, so she kept the cat here. So…”

Looking at the cacti in front of him, Zhou Qian continued, “Maybe we can obtain the third fragment of the memory from these cacti. However, we need to have the cactus gene.”

“We shouldn’t,” Yin Jiujiu quickly said, pulling Situ Qing back. “Or I fear we might prick each other to death since we’re too close.”

Situ Qing nodded in agreement. “Given that these plants and animals don’t actually harm us… You four can stay here, and we’ll go check out the negative second floor.”

So, three minutes later, the two girls went to the negative second floor. The four men stayed on the top floor, waiting for cacti to grow on them.

During that time, Wu Ren glanced at the rose blooming in his palm and exclaimed, “A cactus and a rose… growing together. Huh… It’s both strange and romantic.”

Qi Liuxing commented, “I feel as if we’re standing by the elevator, waiting to transform and then go save the world.”

Zhou Qian couldn’t help but shake his head. “Xiao Qi, you’re so childish.”

Ke Yuxiao: “It’s nice that Xiao Qi thinks this way.”

Zhou Qian: “……”

Moments later, Zhou Qian’s prediction came true. Spiky cacti started growing on parts of the four of them. At the same time, a memory was implanted in their minds.

The memory took place at the top of this tower. However, looking down from the window, the landscape wasn’t as it appears now.

A vast wetland stretched out, its waters reflecting the sky like a mirror, surrounded by trees of varying heights, normal birds, and running animals. Not far away, the roses growing in the rose garden were the most ordinary kind—a beautiful red dot amidst the green.

Inside the top of the tower, the first thing that appeared in the memory was a thin computer screen. There were a few cacti on the table next to the computer, and at that moment, Sarah was sitting in front of it.

Next to the computer, to Sarah’s right, was a full-length mirror. But it clearly wasn’t just a mirror. The surface flowed like liquid gold, like streaming sunlight, yet it wasn’t blinding.

Sarah glanced at the mirror, her eyes becoming fervent and obsessed. She then looked at the cactus with a meaningful gaze.

“I really don’t understand why Ryan likes these spiky plants. When he gave it to me, he said it could absorb radiation. Well, looking at you during breaks isn’t too bad,” Sarah mumbled to herself. “Ryan is doing charity at the orphanage again today. I truly admire him. How can he be so selfless?”

“If it were me, if I had the chance to go out, I would never come back. The small towns around here… can’t compare to the outside world. It’s so exciting!”

“People here are so ignorant. Like those girls, so naive… I just mentioned magic, and they believe me. Such backward humans… Do they really deserve to live? Even if they do, Ryan shouldn’t bother with them. Why should smart people like us sacrifice for stupid humans?”

“He’s my own brother, yet I don’t know what he’s thinking. How can this happen? No, I want to get close to his mind. I want to know… why are there good people like him in the world?”

For a moment, Zhou Qian found that Sarah’s words resonated with his own thoughts. He often wondered —Why are there people as good as Bai Zhou in the world?

He even thought today —If only he could know what Bai Zhou was thinking.

“Ryan and I were born from the same mother, yet we can’t understand each other. It’s so unfair. The foolish heavens—why arrange this? Why are we so different even if we have the same parents?”

“Well, I can start my experiment. Who should I merge with first? The stupid humans in the town aren’t worthy. Such a grand experiment… It should start with my dearest brother!”

With that, Sarah picked up something like a phone and sent a voice message. “Ryan, come to the experimental tower tonight. I have something to tell you.”

The scene shifted. The location was still this high-rise building, but the time had changed from day to night.

The elevator door opened, and Ryan, looking weary, probably from consecutive days of charity work, walked out.

Waiting for him at the elevator was a pale gold mirror. Suddenly, the golden surface shattered, spilling particles that seemed to dance like sunlight. They flowed onto the floor, crawled to Ryan’s feet, and swiftly enveloped him.

“Sarah? W-What have you done? You actually—”

Ryan couldn’t finish his sentence as the luminous particles sealed his mouth, flowed into his throat, and spread throughout his body.

Then, Sarah appeared, walking over from the side. At this moment, there was still another part of the pulsating light on the ground. In the same manner, this portion of light completely enveloped Sarah and poured into her body through her eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, reaching every single cell within her.

Soon, both individuals’ facial features, limbs, and bodies were no longer visible. Standing on the ground in front of the now empty mirror frame were just two human-shaped, pale golden streams.

Approximately 30 seconds later, these two streams suddenly fell to the ground, turning into two jelly-like liquid forms, wiggling and bouncing on the floor. Immediately, they surged towards each other, merging into one, and gradually rose, solidifying into a human shape.

Finally, the golden glow left the human form, transformed into pulsating particles, crawled along the ground back into the mirror frame, and once again restored itself to something resembling a mirror surface.

Thus, a new, fused individual was born.

Gradually, the person walked over and stood in front of the full-length mirror, seemingly wanting to look at their reflection. However, since the mirror wasn’t real, it couldn’t reflect their appearance.

At this moment, through the memory frame, players could only see the bare back of the figure, with the area below the waist obscured by cacti and other plants, hidden in the darkness of night.

The author has something to say:

Zhou Qian: I want to merge with Bai Zhou.

Zhou Qian: “Zhou Ge, they say that it was puppy love. What do you think?”

Chapter 86: Sharing the Same Bed and the Same Dream

Nol’s face grew slightly warm from the excitement of his story, and his body became hot from the deadly touch. As Teest pulled away, the cool air rushed into the bed, and Nol shivered.

By contrast, Teest’s hand on top of his head felt especially warm.

Nol watched Teest’s figure disappear at the door, and he promptly sat up from the bed.

The shadow wolf poked its mouth out from Nol’s shadow and licked his heel twice. Nol scratched the shadow wolf’s large chin and took two fruits from the table, throwing them into the slightly opened wolf’s mouth.

Ben let out a satisfied grunt, chomping away with its big mouth.

The presence of the shadow wolf’s mouth was astounding, yet, despite this, Nol still felt like most of the room was empty.

He glanced around the room that wasn’t even 20 square meters, and when his eyes passed over the wardrobe, his heart sank.

Something was wrong.

When he had saved Little Piel, Black Candle Kando had witnessed everything, including Nol admitting that he “created this world”. Kando didn’t say a word, and with one thing after another, Nol had almost forgotten about it. Just now—Nol remembered putting a soundproof spell on the room, but not on the wardrobe where Kando was.

The candle must have heard his bedtime story.

Barefoot, Nol jumped off the bed and opened the wardrobe. In the corner, Kando’s vertical eye quietly watched him. This thing only had one eye, so it was hard for Nol to discern its emotions.

“I remember you saying you didn’t know your own name,” Nol said, looking into that eye. “We took you from the Eternal Church. Are you a Supplement Demon?”

“I thought you were too busy with your bloody sweetheart and had forgotten about me,” the candle replied with a particularly pitiful tone. “Now you remember that lonely little Kando has feelings too…”

“Answer me,” Nol demanded, grabbing it.

“Oh, a Supplement Demon, a Supplement Demon. I am not a Supplement Demon.” Kando slapped Nol’s jaws with candle tears. “The importance of a name is second only to the soul—unless you have no relatives, no relationships with anyone—the Eternal Church likes to destroy it, and some like to use it as collateral.”

“You ‘mortgaged’ your name?” Nol frowned. “Mortgaged to whom? To turn you into this thing?”

“If I answer that, I’ll never get it back.” Kando looked up at Nol. “Don’t worry. When the time is right, I will tell you everything. Think about it, if I wanted to harm you, I’d have had plenty of opportunities.”

“Thank you for reminding me. I think now is a good time. The soundproofing in this cabinet isn’t very good. You must have heard everything.” Nol flicked his fingers.

The black candle nimbly crawled on the back of his hand, like a deformed octopus. It quickly found a new patch of skin and wrapped around it.

“Oh, my thoughts are a bit different from your bloody sweetheart,” the candle whispered. “I don’t think you’re a God of Creation in a true sense.”

“It’s a coincidence, but I happen to know races that can create worlds. But you’re not like them—no offense, but even in their weakened state, they wouldn’t be as weak as you.”

Kando was blunt, but Nol wasn’t offended. “It’s okay. I don’t think I’m any god.”

What kind of God works overtime 24/7 and lands themselves in a hospital? That’s just weak.

“So, as I said, now is not the right time,” Kando calmly stated.

“I hate people who beat around the bush.”

Nol snapped, grabbing a tear from the candle and pulling Kando off. The candle was upside down, its flame brushing against its body, but the black wax showed no signs of melting.

Kando bent its eye as if smiling. “If I tell you everything now, you might give up. I’d rather wait until you have no choice. I can only say that as long as you two continue to seek the truth of the world, the right time will come.”

As it spoke, it stared intently at Nol, its pupil dilating.

Under the gaze of this inhuman thing, sweat formed on Nol’s back. His good mood from earlier had mostly vanished. Still, the candle did reveal a lot. Kando had mortgaged its name to someone and was likely serving that “someone”. And at the right time, this guy would surely ask him for a favor.

How would he define such a creature? A commercial spy? An obvious mole?

Yet, Nol did need it. Whether for wielding his staff or for spatial magic, it was indispensable to him…

“Honey, are you fixing your staff?”

Teest’s voice and the sweet aroma returned to the room, immediately interrupting Nol’s train of thought. He set down Kando, who was chuckling quietly, and closed the wardrobe door seamlessly.

“Well, I had a little chat with our Mr. Kando,” Nol said, his eyes drifting to the tray Teest held.

On it were two cups of hot red wine, garnished with slices of orange and cinnamon sticks. The difference was that one of the cups contained several thin white bones.

“One of them has been boiled with the scraps of the Eclipse Shield. Don’t worry, I cleaned it thoroughly.” Teest placed the steaming tray on the bedside and casually took out the Eclipse Shield from his pouch, handing it to Nol.

Nol couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise.

When they first found the Eclipse Shield, it was exquisitely designed with a sense of ancient beauty. The bones used as the main material were bordered with old silver and wrapped with dark ironwood and gold with rune patterns. The intertwining of gold and black was very fitting for the name “Eclipse Shield”.

Now, the gold-laden wood was gone, the old silver edging was painted with metallic paint and partially covered with leather. The bone in the center was hidden under a thin layer of tin, turning the shield from an “ancient religious artifact with an eerie aura” into something that seemed like a cheap street-side bargain. It was quite lamentable.

However, its current appearance did match the title the “Betrayer” and was discreetly comforting.

Nol then pulled up its item description—

[Curiosity: You will devote everything to guard the beautiful yet dark mysteries. Such a feeling is irresistible to you. Remember, curiosity is the beginning of everything.

※Crafted with ingenuity by Teest.]

Great, there’s no “Eclipse Shield” in this world anymore. All that remains is “Curiosity”.

Nol briefly examined the attributes of the freshly renamed “Curiosity”, and its power seemed quite formidable. Although it wasn’t as potent as the shields from the late stages of the game, it was strong enough to give a dragon a headache.

This shield was personally modified by Teest.

Nol wasn’t too surprised that Teest had crafting skills. Teest’s spatial pouch seemed to be something only a Player could craft, probably made by him.

What Nol was curious about was something else—

“How did you manage to improve its attributes?” Nol asked, looking at the small round shield now the size of a pot lid.

“Oh, I added a special ingredient.”

“What?”

“Your hair,” Teest said with a playful smile. “See, it’s very effective.”

Nol: “……”

So, when Teest was patting his head, he was just trying to get some of his hair? Well, body parts from a Lich were indeed rare magical materials, so Nol couldn’t find fault with that.

Silently, Nol took a big sip of the hot red wine. Teest approached quickly, watching him with immense curiosity.

After swallowing the sweet wine—which lacked the potency of the bewilderment dew and couldn’t possibly intoxicate a Lich—Nol finished the cup in one gulp. He then glared at Teest and ruffled his hair vigorously.

Teest: “Did you gain a good skill?”

Nol: “No, just wiping my hands.”

Teest looked at Nol, stunned.

Only then did Nol bared his teeth and grin. “Just kidding.”

“Oh my, you’re quite vengeful,” Teest said, touching his long hair with lingering fear.

After the stats refreshed, Nol’s smile froze on his face, gradually turning into a mix of astonishment and horror.

…This thing has more stats than a dragon?!

Previously, he was always waiting for the respawn timer of [Fallen Death] to farm monsters, with his stats increasing at a sluggish pace. After drinking that glass just now, the increase in stats directly surpassed the total of what he had gained before.

His current stats equaled about half of a fully leveled Lich.

Before Nol could react, his skill list refreshed, and a familiar notification popped up in front of him.

[Loser’s Obsession: A laughable persistence, pointless struggle, and the loser’s defiance against fate. This skill has no effect, holds no value, and cannot be used.]

[A similar origin skill is detected. Would you like to merge the skills “Lament of the Weak” and “Loser’s Obsession”?]

[Note: Merging can produce a new skill. The new skill will retain the original source, but other changes are unpredictable. Please choose carefully.]

Nol hesitated for a few seconds, then carefully chose “Yes”.

[Collecting data… Reinterpreting skills…]

[Skill merge completed.]

[Lost Last Wish: Regrettably, the cries for help have vanished, and you can only chase the echoes. This skill has no effect, holds no value.]

Again, it was this inexplicable type of skill.

Nol cautiously stored the Lost Last Wish and vigorously rubbed his face.

“Not satisfied with the new skill?” Teest leisurely sipped his hot red wine.

Nol forced himself back to his senses . He hesitated, then shook his head. “It’s not very useful for now, but it added a lot to my stats. If I accumulate it over time, I might be able to recover this level’s stats.”

Now, Nol was even less eager to change his class—who knows if the attributes he had painstakingly accumulated would be recalculated by the system after he changed his class, leaving him with no place to cry.

“Thank you for the hot wine. Let’s sleep for today,” Nol whispered.

Both of them crawled into their beds. The inn’s blankets emitted a faint musty and herbal smell from disinfectants, which was a bit suffocating, but thankfully they were dry and soft.

“…Nol.”

“Hmm?”

“I’m curious. If you truly had the power of a god, what would you want to do?”

“Hmm… Take my neighbors home, and it would be even better if I could restore their human forms.” As he slid into the blanket, Nol’s voice grew drowsy.

“Anything else?”

“Destroy the Eternal Church, get rid of the Eternal Son… see about the Goddess of Life…”

Teest chuckled. “Then what?”

“That’s it,” Nol mumbled sleepily. “That’s it… I really want to go home… I wonder how my parents are doing…”

Teest: “.…..”

He turned his back to Nol. His golden eyes glanced at the wardrobe and then the corner of the room.

Nol nestled against Teest’s back and quickly fell asleep. Teest kept blinking in the dark. After some time, he quietly got up and stealthily left the bed.

……

Four in the morning, in the secret chamber of the Black Glove Tavern.

“Thank you for your effort.” The General snapped her fingers, and a grotesque creature behind her brought a glass of iced red wine for the guest.

Her guest, Former Pope Painter, smiled and nodded. “You’re too kind, madam. If there’s such work in the future, please remember to contact us first…”

Bang, bang, bang!!!

There were a series of noises from the monster corridor. Seconds later, a man covered in blood and entrails entered the room, with viscera dripping from his clothes onto the expensive carpet.

The man, holding a simple longsword and carrying an even simpler round shield on his back, walked rudely to the guest chair.

The General’s distorted face twitched, and she threw a cleansing spell at the newcomer. “Mad monk.”

“Good evening.” Teest waved casually.

“I knew you’d come again, so I prepared two batches of monsters especially for you.” The General hissed. “Those things weren’t cheap. Don’t come by again this year. Consider it a favor I’m asking.”

“Alright.” Teest took a seat on the guest chair, glancing at Painter. The latter’s butt seemed glued to the chair. Painter just gave a polite nod and smile, with no intention of standing up.

“Don’t mind This Villain,” Painter said. “I just want to slowly savor this wine—once you leave Grape Collar, you can’t find wine this good.”

Teest glared at Painter for a while before turning to the wary-looking General. “Relax, I just happened to be passing by and wanted to chat.”

“Passing by at this hour?” The General gritted her teeth.

“Yes, I couldn’t sleep.” Teest held his chin and poured himself a cup of tea. “I have a little worry and wanted to consult a ‘normal person’.”

“Don’t flatter me,” the General said warily.

“I thought that tying someone down would keep them with me, but in the end, they still left,” Teest began. “Of course, by that time, our goals would have been met. I had accepted that outcome from the beginning. But it still doesn’t sit well with me.”

The General frowned. “There are times you can’t keep someone? Dead or alive, you always find a way. You didn’t…”

“It’s called fear of loss,” Painter interjected with a smile, tilting his head to avoid the teacup saucer Teest threw his way—which embedded itself in the wall. Its edges shimmered with a dark glow.

The General took a deep breath. “The only things that bind people are emotions or interests. You can’t give emotions, so think about interests. Goodbye and goodnight. I’d prefer not to see you again.”

“I’m aware of that. Unfortunately so is the other party,” Teest said with a grievance, staying put in his chair. “I provided emotional support and benefits, but I’m still not happy.”

The General: “……”

The General: “…So why are you suddenly unhappy?”

Teest thought for a moment. “Tonight, I confirmed his intentions. His response was exactly as I had expected. He has decided to return to his homeland after solving the problem.”

The General took a deep breath. “Isn’t it good that things are going as expected? What are you fussing about—”

“Because he didn’t say he’d take you with him,” Painter interjected with enthusiasm.

Teest’s smile vanished, reappearing on the General’s face.

“Care to elaborate?” the General poured herself a drink.

“He’s special.” Teest shifted the topic, not aiming anything at Painter’s throat this time. “After achieving my goal, my interest in him may not necessarily wane… I’ve recently discovered these seem to be two different matters.”

The General raised her cup to Teest from a distance, the gems on her gloves sparkling. “My answer remains the same. Offer more emotion or more benefits. If you can’t manage the former, focus on the latter… or perhaps combine the two.”

She winked awkwardly at Teest.

After contemplating for a couple of seconds, Teest nodded seriously. “That’s a good idea.”

He took out an expensive magical item from his pouch, placing it by the teacup, then stood up and left, humming a tune.

The General helplessly watched Teest’s retreating figure.

She recognized the magic pocket watch on the table, rumored to be one of the Eternal Church’s treasures. This kid really got a lot of stuff through the ‘Time Reversion Potion’. The watch was worth three times what she’d lost that evening. However…

“I think he missed my hint. Was I too subtle?” The General sighed. “I can’t just tell him, ‘Hey, it’s time for you to use that appearance and physique of yours.’ We may be of different genders, but I don’t want to sexually harass the Mad Monk.”

“I think he missed it too, but it’s more interesting this way.” Painter swirled his empty wine glass. “Could I get a refill, madam?”

“Of course, if you’re willing to share the mercenaries’ experiences.” The General gestured to her tall servant. “Go. Release the backup batch of monsters. They’ll clean up the corridor themselves.”

The work of the Drifting Mercenaries was filled with valuable intel. The two chatted pleasantly till dawn. Painter, with a friendly smile, downed five of the General’s treasured bottles.

“It was a pleasant evening.” Painter stood up. “Next, we plan to visit near Bissus…”

Bang, bang, bang!!!

There was another series of noises coming from the monster corridor. Moments later, a man covered in blood and viscera stood at the entrance. He cast several cleansing spells on himself and then cautiously entered the room.

The person, wearing a simple black cloak, had a staff in his hand that resembled an ordinary cane.

“My apologies for the disturbance,” Nol said politely. “I’d like to purchase some additional medical supplies.”

The General’s gaze drifted towards the monster corridor, remaining silent for a long moment. Painter bowed to the two of them and quickly exited.

“Good morning, Master of Paradise.”

The General’s smile gradually distorted. “Why aren’t you with the Mad Monk?”

Nol hesitated for a moment, making sure that Painter really left, then he cleared his throat somewhat formally. “Apart from matters of collaboration, I also have some questions about the Mad Monk that I’d like to ask you.”

“…What happened to him?”

“Nothing.” Nol shook his head. “I just want to know more about him.”

“You can ask him directly. As I said, I don’t even consider him a friend—”

“Weren’t you the Supplement Demon who escaped with him back in the day?” Nol asked bluntly.

The General turned her mismatched eyes, silently staring at Nol.

“Please don’t misunderstand. I have no intention of prying into your affairs and will offer adequate compensation.”

Nol hesitated for a moment, choosing the most suitable wording. “I just want to consult an observer’s perspective to ensure our collaborative relationship remains strong.”

“Go ahead.” The Master of Paradise wasn’t someone she could afford to offend, so she could only respond weakly.

Can you please spare me, you bastards.

Chapter 85: Alva’s Dinner

[It wasn’t a test. You’ve been recognized.]

Teest placed his hands on Nol’s shoulders, resembling a solid spirit behind him. [Truly deserving of the title ‘Golden Sword’. His discernment is sharp.]

It seemed that Mr. Enbillick Alva’s rise from being a wanderer to his current stature wasn’t just due to luck and business acumen.

Having just completed a time-travel journey, God knows how much Nol wanted to find an inn and sleep. His favorability towards Billy gradually decreased, like seeing a boss suddenly announcing overtime.

Nol steadied himself and simply took off his hood. “Yes, sir. My brother happens to be away. He’s waiting for me to return for dinner. You can chat with Mr. Painter. I’ll take my leave first.”

Golden Sword Billy apparently knew the former Pope Painter. It was now up to Mr. Painter to divert the attention.

Painter quickly intervened. “Yes, you see, this gentleman also happens to be busy. It’s not appropriate for me, an outsider, to stay with your close-knit family. Thank you for your hospitality. We can meet again next time.”

Billy’s smiling eyes flickered between the two for a few seconds. “That’s a shame… By the way, you two should be careful. The auction lost the ‘Time Reversion’ potion, and mercenaries are searching throughout the city.”

Nol: “.…..”

Painter: “.…..”

“I guess you two are new here. Even if you have identity proof, you might still face trouble. Wait, your identifications are fake, right? You must be careful!” Billy earnestly said.

Painter, with a warm and perfect smile, responded, “I suddenly feel like having grilled ribs and onion bread. Sorry to bother you.”

[Is this guy okay?] Nol wondered.

They had the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, so they didn’t really care about being chased. But if they refuse here, Billy would 200% guess that they have a way to “completely avoid the patrollers”.

[Follow him. I want to see what he’s planning,] Teest hummed. [I’ll deal with that shield later. Let’s eat first.]

“I’ll join,” Nol responded slowly. “You’re still so generous.”

[I hope the grilled ribs come with apple mash.] Behind Nol, Teest wished with great anticipation.

Billy’s residence was surprisingly modest.

But to put it another way, just looking at the house, Nol would guess it belonged to a slightly affluent commoner. “Golden Sword” Billy’s mansion in the big city of Grape Collar was almost like the Flama family’s neighborhood residence.

A small yard, a cozy two-story house, and windows filled with warm honey-like light. As soon as the door opened, the aroma of hot food wafted out.

The first floor was the living room. By the fireplace on the west side of the living room, the food on the dining table was fresh out of the pot. The onion bread gave off a scorching aroma, and the ribs on the iron plate sizzled. The table also had slightly burnt potatoes paired with roasted chicken, small duck tarts sprinkled with tomato and fried basil, plus a colorful vegetable soup.

Teest was pleased to find apple mash as a side dish on the table. The accompanying drink was juice mixed with soda, and he didn’t smell any alcohol.

Billy’s wife, Avra, took off her apron and greeted them with a smile.

“Daddy!” “Dad!”

Two kids stumbled towards the porch. Billy bent down, laughing, and wrapped one child in each arm. “Kids, we have guests today!”

“Guests!” The children shouted in his arms, turning to look at Painter and Nol following Billy.

“Yes, daddy’s important guests. Did mommy feed you pumpkin milk porridge? How about going to bed early, hm?”

“Okay!”

“Sorry, it’s a bit messy here.” After ushering the kids upstairs, Billy, removing his coat, casually walked back. “We had just cleaned up five minutes ago, and those two little rascals will mess it up.”

Nol sat at the table, while Teest lazily leaned against the back of his chair.

[There are at least fifty protective magical items in this room.] Teest was amazed. Any one of them was worth more than this house. [No wonder this guy had the confidence to bring people home.]

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Avra,” Painter said, lifting her hand and giving a standard hand kiss. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a sumptuous dinner.”

Avra, smiling radiantly, said with a heavy accent in the common language, “You’re too kind, Mr. Painter.” When her gaze met Nol’s, her eyes widened slightly. “You are…”

“The young man we saved that day.” Billy smiled. “He’s with Painter, so I invited him over. Sir, would you like to introduce yourself again?”

“Ross.” Nol bluntly gave the fake name.

Billy simply hummed. “Eat while it’s hot. Try my wife’s cooking.”

Nol bravely picked up the fork, and the real battle began.

He had to avoid the gazes of Avra and Billy from across the table while feeding food to Teest. Even though the couple didn’t notice Teest, it was still a highly challenging task. If he wasn’t careful, he might be seen as a madman performing with cutlery in someone else’s house.

Watching Nol sneakily feed the Mad Monk, Painter suppressed several laughs with a cough.

“Why are you going to such lengths?” Drawing Billy’s attention, Painter’s voice flowed like a gentle stream. “Mr. Alva, you don’t need to take care of a minor thug like me—I suppose the renowned Alva Merchant Group wouldn’t need the services of the Drifting Mercenary Group.”

“You must have many enemies eyeing your courtyard. Hosting us tonight might stir gossip.”

“It’s been many years since we last met, hasn’t it?” Billy tore a piece of onion bread, sharing half with his wife. “We knew each other when you were still at the Temple of Life. A friendship of twenty-one years, aren’t I allowed to host an old friend?”

Nol’s ears perked up, slowing his actions. Teest quietly scratched his earlobe, prompting Nol to stealthily grab another rib.

Painter laughed naturally. “That was in our younger days.”

“Don’t say that. I’ve always admired you,” Billy said, raising his fruit soda. “The first apostate Chosen One, and such a heavyweight figure. If I had been in your shoes back then, I might not have had your courage. It’s a shame no one else has done anything as exciting since then.”

Nol, while eating baked potatoes, shook his head secretly in his heart.

Twelve years ago, another Chosen One betrayed God and became the infamous Mad Monk. Coincidentally, he’s now sneaking around eating ribs at your dining table.

He glanced anxiously at Mrs. Avra. Billy’s comments were rather heretical, and he was unsure how she would react…

“My wife is just a common believer. Her devotion to the gods is less than her interest in fresh vegetables.” Catching Nol’s gaze, Billy grinned. “I personally don’t believe in such things either. Don’t be too formal, young man.”

“You and your wife’s love story is widely known.” Painter took over the conversation. “Wasn’t our first meeting because of that?”

“Really?”

Nol immediately looked on with bright, curious eyes. Please, continue the conversation and don’t focus on me.

Teest’s actions also slowed. He leaned into Nol’s shoulder, and their heads nearly tilted at the same angle.

“Yes, Mrs. Avra was originally a slave from a foreign country with a tragic background. Mr. Billy rescued her from the slaver group. When they wanted to marry, they faced strong opposition from Duke Alva…”

Duke Alva vehemently disapproved of the marriage.

At the time, Billy was emerging as a prominent figure. Duke Alva was looking to arrange a suitable marriage for him. Avra, being a former slave, wasn’t highly educated and couldn’t even speak the common language.

The idea of his adopted son marrying such a woman nearly made the Duke faint from rage. He publicly declared in front of the entire Alva family that he would only accept their marriage if the Pope himself officiated it.

[And then, Painter resigned because he was annoyed?] Nol turned to Teest, curious.

Teest stifled a laugh and shook his head vigorously.

In fact, something within Painter had never changed. Upon hearing of this, Painter, who was then the Pope, willingly stepped forward and happily officiated the wedding.

“I remember, back then, Mrs. Avra had just come of age.” Painter reminisced. “The love of young people is truly heartwarming…”

“I didn’t expect it to go so smoothly,” Billy said with a chuckle while shaking his glass. “Most people would’ve been wary of the relationship between the Temple and the Alva Group and would’ve never helped me out.”

“That’s also why I couldn’t hold that position for long.” Painter took a bite from a chicken leg, rather ungracefully.

Billy also took a piece of chicken. “I’ve heard rumors… about the Flama family incident… Rumor has it that you couldn’t accept the church’s tacit approval of people’s actions.”

Nol paused with his fork.

Did the Pope renounce the faith twenty-one years ago because he couldn’t stomach the atrocities against Teest’s family?

“Seeing too much filth, that was just the last straw.” With a clang, Painter threw the chicken bone onto the plate. “So, Mr. Alva, did you invite me over just to reminisce about the past?”

“I’m just very curious about a former Chosen One,” Billy replied.

“Theoretically speaking, I’m still a Chosen One by God.” Painter laughed. “Shamefully, my concept of ‘God’s Chosen One’ isn’t quite the same as ordinary people—’God’s Chosen One’ should rather be people choosing God. Does it matter if God exists or not? And does it matter if one believes or not?”

Billy chewed on his chicken, raising an eyebrow. “You really are blasphemous.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere.” Painter bared his teeth and stabbed his fork towards the ribs again. Despite all his talk, his pace of eating meat hadn’t slowed down at all.

[The Chosen One is someone who chooses God? Interesting thought,] Teest said. [Then I choose you, honey.]

Nol choked on his vegetable soup, coughing till his face turned red.

[I’m really curious about his oracle.] Nol tried to change the subject in his mind while handing Teest a piece of duck meat pie.

Teest hummed, biting the tip of the fork. [I’m curious too. How about we set fire to the Immortal Church here?]

[…Just eat your food.]

They actually ate quite peacefully afterwards. Billy seemed to have invited the two just for a meal. Throughout the dinner, it was mainly Billy and Painter conversing back and forth. The probing Nol had imagined never occurred.

“…Something happened at the auction. I’ll be leaving Grape Collar in a few days.” Billy sighed. “I originally wanted to buy that ‘Time Reversion Potion’, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.”

Painter, nibbling on the last rib bone, pretended he heard nothing. Billy turned to Nol. “What do you and your brother plan to do? If you want, the job offer at the jewelry store still stands!”

“No thanks,” Nol said lightheartedly. “We want to explore other places.”

“That’s a pity.” Billy lowered his eyebrows. “Oh yes, try not to go to the Black Forest. There’s a group called ‘Paradise’ that has emerged recently. The Temple is still assessing the danger. All merchant groups have to detour for now.”

“Thank you for the warning.” Nol continued to force a smile. In fact, ‘Paradise’ wasn’t a big deal—it was just a small community from another world. As far as he knew, the members of Paradise were busy farming.

Billy looked at him meaningfully for a while, then turned to Painter, continuing the casual conversation. “I’ve heard that something’s happening at the border between New Gemino and the Shiva territory. The people from the Temple of Life are gathering there.”

“Ah? I’ll need to pick a new route then,” Painter muttered. “I don’t want to run into them.”

Teest looked at Billy for a while, stole a potato tip with Nol’s fork, and poked Nol. [Ask him about it. He’s hiding something.]

“What happened over there, if you don’t mind sharing?” Nol cleared his throat and aggressively speared a piece of potato.

Billy shrugged. “I heard that the Demon King’s corruption is spreading rapidly, and monsters have become very rampant. I don’t know much beyond that. The Alva Merchant Group never ventures to such places.”

With that, he looked at his wife with a smile.

“Avra, you can bring the dessert now—you must try it. It’s a new product from the ‘Good Blessing Bakery’. We poached a great chef from Whitebird City!”

Nol tensed up immediately, fearing another plate of peach cupcakes. Fortunately, Avra brought large peach jellies accompanied by homemade orange cookies.

Billy personally served a cup in front of Nol.

“Please, enjoy,” he said with a smile.

……

At midnight, Nol crashed headfirst into his inn pillow. The meal had been exhausting—gathering information, feeding Teest, and acting all in one. Being an introverted techie, his socializing cells were nearly drained.

“That Golden Sword Billy—why does he feel like a messaging NPC.” Nol mumbled with his face buried in the pillow. “Talking to him feels like you might get some strange quest at any moment.”

Now he was completely honest with Teest, speaking freely. This feeling was simply amazing.

When talking to neighbors, he always had to gauge their mental state. With Teest, he had no such concerns. After all, considering the Mad Monk’s mental state, any change was considered an “improvement”.

“He’s selling you a favor.” Teest stood by the bed, moving his shoulders. “The former Pope, needless to say, might have guessed that you are the Master of Paradise. After all, you’ve met before.”

Nol sat up in shock. “Is that even possible?”

“Merchants live on information. That guy’s nose might be sharper than an Investigation Knight.” Teest threw himself onto the bed, lying beside Nol. “Alright, honey, we’ll talk about these minor things tomorrow—I want a bedtime story.”

“…Huh?”

“About ‘Tahe’, the story you promised.” Teest turned to Nol. Only one oil lamp was lit in the room, but those golden eyes shone brighter than any flame.

“Okay, what would you like to hear?” Nol chuckled. “The design concept, production anecdotes—anything is fine.”

Teest moved closer, eyes narrowing. “Then, let’s start with the novice village.”

“I have to think about where to start. Oh, did you know? Actually, that tavern…”

Nol recounted freely.

He told Teest about the NPCs that should have existed, described the discarded drafts, and hummed the background music that should have been played with flutes and harps… The surroundings seemed to transform from a dim inn to a sunny office.

And he was joyfully sharing his world.

The feeling of exhaustion faded, and his spirit seemed to be rejuvenated. Even as his mouth got dry from talking, Nol’s mood lightened, and his eyes sparkled with laughter.

Teest knew well the different states of a person.

For instance, he knew that at this moment, Nol was completely off guard. He leaned in, blissfully talking about the origins of this world.

Teest listened carefully, observing even more intensely. His gaze followed every movement, every inch of skin. Without realizing, Nol’s hands played with Teest’s hair tips, his entire focus evident. The black strands swayed with his breath, and the faint lines on his soft, rosy lips became more visible. When he got excited, a blush painted his face, and Teest could hear his slightly accelerated heartbeat.

No different from an ordinary human.

A beautiful young man, yet speaking of the deep truths of the world. The scene was both madly captivating and enchanting.

Teest couldn’t help but reach out.

Like ripe fruit bending a branch, offering itself to a thirsty traveler, it was undeniably an enticing invitation.

Taking a deep breath, Teest’s hand finally rested on Nol’s arm.

Even though he jokingly called Nol a god, in reality, even Nol himself was unclear about his status.

Though they seemed inseparable at this moment, Teest still yearned to know more, to understand better. To wash away the superficial mysteries and unveil the truth would be the perfect time.

But it wasn’t the right time yet.

So, his hand simply caressed Nol’s arm, feeling the ambiguous warmth. Nol’s storytelling paused for a moment, and his voice got softer. He didn’t shy away.

Shoulders, arms, the back of the hand. Every finger, fingertip, waist.

Teest’s touch was very light. It was hard to tell if he was caressing a lover, a trophy, or a treasure.

“…When designing the specialty bread, we discarded several drafts…”

Nol’s voice got softer, and just as he decided to halt the topic and address the wandering hand, Teest sat up.

“I guess you’re thirsty.”

He touched Nol’s hair.

“It’s time to prepare the Eclipse Shield.”

Chapter 66

A moment ago.

While following Zhou Qian through the wetlands, Wu Ren said, “Look, thanks to the card you gave me at the beginning, with two cards, I was able to restore the points for both cards simultaneously at the ‘Evil Spirit Purification Station’.”

Zhou Qian nodded in realization. “Right. So, people should always do good deeds.”

“Ahem…” Wu Ren, sensing Zhou Qian’s insincerity, changed the topic. “Why did you want me to play the ‘king’ at the beginning?”

Zhou Qian: “I was just testing you. I thought you were in cahoots with Yin Jiujiu.”

Wu Ren: “…”

So it was like that.

As Wu Ren was about to ask more, Zhou Qian stopped walking. Seeing his serious expression, Wu Ren took a step back nervously. “What’s wrong?”

“According to my gambler, Qi Liuxing and the others went east from here. Be careful; this place can trap you in illusions. But if we keep talking, we should be fine,” Zhou Qian said and started walking eastward.

“An illusion? Aren’t you afraid?” Wu Ren asked.

Thinking of something, the serious expression on Zhou Qian’s face disappeared, and he said with a smile, “Because I remembered someone.”

Upon seeing his expression, Wu Ren joked, “Oh, you’re thinking of a woman, right? Zhou Qian, I didn’t expect you to be so sentimental. Heroes do have a weakness for beauties…”

Before Wu Ren could finish, Zhou Qian interrupted, “Oh no, you misunderstood. I was thinking of a man.”

Wu Ren: “???”

Zhou Qian: “He is quite handsome, perhaps even more than many beauties.”

Wu Ren: “…”

Brother, what’s your deal?

Shaking his head, Wu Ren observed Zhou Qian’s silhouette, thinking that no beauty would find them attractive in their current state.

“If we stand next to a beauty now, it would be like Beauty and the Beast. Ah no, Beauty and the Monster…” Wu Ren mumbled.

Zhou Qian halted again.

“What’s wrong?” Wu Ren asked.

Suddenly, Zhou Qian’s chest burst into blooming red roses.

From Zhou Qian’s body sprouted dark grass, making him shed his clothing. His body was almost completely transformed into a plant, with no human skin or flesh left. The tips of these grasses started budding, then blooming one by one.

With grass growing and flowers blooming from it, Zhou Qian looked exceedingly strange, a sight that made Wu Ren frown. But when Wu Ren glanced down, he saw roses sprouting from his chest as well.

After the mutation, Wu Ren’s body resembled stacked leaves, and now petals began to grow on these leaves. He took a moment to process it but then shrugged it off, as the bizarre had become the norm in this instance.

A moment later, Wu Ren twitched his nose, as if he had smelled something, and then turned to walk towards a small path nearby. After not going far, he indeed saw clusters upon clusters of roses blooming there. It was likely that under the influence of these roses, both he and Zhou Qian had acquired the genes of roses in their bodies.

The vibrant red roses blossomed profusely, diluting the unpleasant smell of the place and replacing it with a rich fragrance. What was even more remarkable was that, apart from being much larger in size, the shape of these flowers had not undergone any significant change. At the sight of them, one couldn’t help but feel a sudden sense of returning from an otherworldly realm back to the world of humans.

But after all, this place wasn’t the ordinary human world.

Clusters of roses stretched for miles, and roughly in the middle, there stood an exceptionally large rose, almost as tall as a person.

At that moment, Zhou Qian also turned his gaze to this giant rose.

After realizing that he too had acquired the genes of the rose, his previous speculation about a massive species fusion undoubtedly seemed more plausible. He quickly made an attempt—commanding the roses in his mind, testing if he could control their blooming and wilting.

However, Zhou Qian failed. The roses temporarily couldn’t respond to the commands from his brain.

After pondering for a moment, Zhou Qian motioned for Wu Ren to join him, and together they approached the massive rose in the center. Zhou Qian wanted to try and make more contact with it, to be “sensed” by it a little longer.

Perhaps after waiting for a bit longer and merging more thoroughly with it, he might gain control over the roses.

Unexpectedly, shortly after Zhou Qian approached that giant rose, a memory suddenly appeared in his mind out of nowhere.

It was during an evening.

Roses were planted all over the balcony, and many roses were also placed inside the room. Roses, cosmetics, beautiful dresses… All these items indicated that this was a girl’s room.

In addition, there were some unusual things in the room—magic wands, crystal balls, and books recording magic. It seemed that the girl living here was a witch.

The door opened, and indeed a girl entered.

Zhou Qian was very familiar with her—it was Sarah. She had beautiful eyes, and her hair and eyelashes were a light golden color.

However, she was sitting in a wheelchair, being pushed in.

She had no legs.

The one pushing Sarah was a maid. She carefully lifted Sarah onto the bed. Sarah then looked at her and said, “I’m useless now, aren’t I?”

The maid shook her head, went to the balcony to pick a fresh rose, placed one on Sarah’s head, and put the rest in a vase.

The maid said cautiously and gently, “Dear Sarah, you’re the most beautiful girl in the world. You’re not useless. You’ll stand again. Young Master Ryan will heal you.”

Holding the rose in her hands, Sarah sighed. “Even the most beautiful roses will wither. I’m just like them. You all say I’m beautiful… but without my legs, surely no one would love me. A rose without appreciation loses its luster. If no one loves me… I’ll age quickly and die in loneliness and oblivion.”

“I can’t bear such days. Life is passionate… I hope everyone has me in their eyes. That would be nice…”

“The more people care about me, the happier I live. But now everything has turned into an illusion.”

“Miss Sarah, please don’t say such silly things. You will get better!” The maid admonished, looking more anxious, as if afraid of angering Sarah.

“Look, my promotion of witchcraft… seems like a joke. I founded the Witch Association and brought so many girls into it. But when they find out that I can’t use magic to heal my own legs… what then? I’ll become a joke.”

“I lost. Completely lost.”

Sarah said, “I vowed to Ryan that I would prove him wrong. I wanted to prove that science and technology were wrong. But now… was the path I took correct?”

“You see, even if you’re comforting me now—” Sarah sighed, “you must be laughing at me in your heart. Originally, I was just bitten by a venomous insect, and I refused to go to the hospital… until amputation was the only option. You must be laughing at my ignorance and stubbornness.”

The memory ended here.

The scene shifted.

Then another memory appeared.

It was in a ward.

There was a girl lying on the bed who was pale, but her eyes were bright, and her mouth wore a joyful and content smile.

It was still Sarah.

Surprisingly, looking through the thin quilt, one could see the outline of two legs. It was as if her legs had grown back.

Then someone else entered.

This time it was a familiar face—Ryan.

Except for the color of their eyes, Ryan and Sarah did indeed look very similar. They had different auras, and their facial features were also different upon close inspection, but from their body shape and facial contours, it was clear they shared a close blood relationship.

The room was filled with roses.

Ryan entered holding a bouquet. After pouring water into a vase and placing the roses in it, he sat next to Sarah and began to speak.

“Feeling better? Can you walk?” Ryan asked.

“Yes, thank you. Indeed, I’ve grown legs and can walk. It’s amazing.” Sarah laughed, pulling back the quilt to reveal a beautiful dress. Beneath the dress were two slender, pristine white legs, as if newly born without a single flaw.

Sarah gently touched her leg and covered herself with the quilt again. “I’m still adjusting, but there are no major issues. It’s wonderful.” After a pause, she looked at Ryan, hesitated, and then said, “I’m sorry. I misunderstood you in the past.”

“It’s okay. It’s good that you can see things differently now,” Ryan replied.

“Yes. I was… too stubborn before,” Sarah said with a wry smile. “So I’ll start learning about technology now. It’s not too late, right?”

Ryan said, “Of course there’s time. After I went outside, they tested my IQ and said it was extraordinarily high. They even said they’ve never seen someone with such a high IQ. It shows that Beautiful Flower Town has been isolated from the world for so long that they don’t even know the capabilities of the people here…”

“In any case, you are my sister. You should be like me. What I can learn, you can also learn quickly.”

“Ha… that’s great.” Sarah laughed. After laughing, she looked a bit melancholic. “Wait, what about the Witch Association? I built it from scratch. Every day I tell everyone to return to nature…”

Ryan paused. “Yesterday… a witch was burned. Do you know what happened?”

“I don’t know.” Sarah blinked.

When Sarah said this, Ryan didn’t notice anything. But Zhou Qian saw Sarah’s hand secretly clenched into a fist, and a shadow passed through her eyes.

The beautiful girl had a strong resentment in her eyes, as if…

As if she wished all the witches were dead.

“Isn’t the witch execution done by the mayor? The current mayor is quite annoying. It would be great if you could be mayor in the future.”

“Anyway… I don’t know why, but the townspeople now really hate witches. Haa… I’m thinking about how to dissolve the association.”

“I’m just worried that they learned to return to nature and study magic because of me. In the end, they find out there’s no magic in the world, and now I’m studying science… I’ve become a joke.”

“Sister, you shouldn’t care too much about what others think,” Ryan said. “We just do our thing. Look, I can heal your leg and treat the diseases of others in the town. Everything we learn will benefit everyone. Beautiful Flower Town will get better and better.”

“Yes, you’re right…” Sarah pinched a rose and looked at the setting sun outside the ward. “But this is far from enough.”

Ryan frowned, somewhat puzzled. “Sarah, what do you mean by that?”

The setting sun painted Sarah’s fair face red. The evening glow accentuated her eyes and the rose, which made her look somewhat enchanting.

She whispered, “Our mother died of heart disease. Now you can make a heart. That problem is solved. But there are many other problems.”

“I was bitten by a venomous bug and had to have an amputation because of an infection. Our father died of pneumonia… You said it was caused by a virus. Why can’t we coexist with viruses and bacteria?”

“Ryan, do you think there’s a way… some technology that lets us coexist with them? Or… I’ve always worried that if I get old and unattractive, no one will love me. But plants don’t age! If I could be like a tree or grass, could I live for ten thousand years and stay young?”

Holding the rose in her hand, Sarah turned her head to meet Ryan’s gaze.

Her eyes had a captivating power, hinting at underlying madness. “Is there a technology that can turn us into gods? Ryan, I want the roses in the world to never wither.”

……

These two memories faded away. Not only did Zhou Qian see these images, but Wu Ren did too.

Wu Ren felt he should have broken out in cold sweat, but his back was already full of leaves. He said, “Did we see all this from the perspective of the rose? Are these the rose’s memories?”

“That seems to be the case,” Zhou Qian said thoughtfully, looking at the huge red rose. Such a beautiful flower would be wonderful if it never withered. But did beauty always mean it was right?

Moments later, Wu Ren continued, “Wait… We thought that Ryan and Sarah were opposites, one pursuing science and the other magic. Ryan was a tech fanatic! He was so obsessed with his experiments that he caused accidents, created these strange plants and animals, and sent us here… but now I feel… that the real tech fanatic is Sarah?”

“You’re right,” Zhou Qian replied. “Sarah founded the Witch Association. She seems like the kind of person born to be in a cult—good at convincing people with her speeches and persuasions. She said she wanted everyone’s attention. Perhaps that’s why she founded the association. But when she realized she couldn’t achieve everything through magic… she turned to ‘technology’.”

“But Ryan is the one who’s into technology…” Wu Ren said, puzzled.

“Is it possible that Ryan is Sarah and Sarah is Ryan?” Zhou Qian suggested.

“That’s what we thought before—that Ryan is pretending to be a woman—”

Wu Ren was interrupted by Zhou Qian, “But what if… it’s not cross-dressing?”

Wu Ren: “?”

Zhou Qian lifted his hand, looked at the ink-colored grass and red rose in his palm, and whispered, “Could they have merged together?”

Chapter 149: End of the Road

Qu Duanyun’s breath halted for a moment. If he could, he’d wish to take back the signal flare calling for the Taiheng Sect.

Now he had shot himself in the foot. No wonder Shi Jingzhi had informed the Yueshui Pavilion about the Hanging Tree matter. While commoners might be in the dark, the leaders of the major sects certainly knew their stuff. This misstep, this blunder, had completely thrown him off his game.

It would have been fine if it were just Sect Master Qi, but now it involved the “ordinary people”. When Taiheng arrived, they would surely side with Shi Zhongyu.

If the Hanging Tree matter were exposed to the martial world, it would be less of a matter of restraining the actions of the Immortal Assembly and more of causing harm for decades to come—people of the martial world were more loyal and righteous than ordinary folks and were closer to the common people than the imperial court. If news spread that the Hanging Tree was responsible for the shortened lives of the elderly, who knows what chaos it would cause?

One wrong move in this game of chess.

Why was it always just one wrong move?

All these distractions, like bandits and the Soft Fish Demon Eyes, were just tricks to blind him. Qu Duanyun initially couldn’t fathom Shi Jingzhi’s intentions, but now it was clear—

Those two scoundrels were displaying affection in broad daylight!

The last time they met the True Immortal, the two from the Kushan sect weren’t behaving like this. So, all their previous disagreements were just an act?

Perhaps Yin Ci used the special constitution of the Child of Desire, employed some tricks, and attracted Shi Jingzhi to his side with emotions and desires. The Child of Desire, being sweet-talked all night, could have been easily deceived.

A respected founding general, now, in his quest for revenge, abandoned his dignity and honor!

Coincidentally, Shi Jingzhi, with a loving expression, was embracing Yin Ci, showing no signs of malice or madness. Even Monk Juehui had to recite a few Buddha mantras, intentionally looking away.

“Arrest them all!” Qu Duanyun commanded the soldiers behind him, steeling himself to give the order.

The majority of those left were from the Immortal Assembly, fully understanding the stakes. The wilderness was suddenly lit up with the gleam of magical artifacts, surrounding that lone group.

Qu Duanyun needed to swiftly turn the tables. He felt a thin layer of sweat on his forehead. They shouldn’t be too harsh on most of the incoming righteous sect members. Yet, every “should” seemed to shatter in front of him.

His chest felt heavy, panic wouldn’t dissipate, and a foreboding sense grew.

“Attack! Leave no survivors!”

As Qu Duanyun’s words fell, a myriad of artifact lights poured towards the few individuals. Apart from the Child of Desire and the Root of Calamity, the rest would surely be obliterated. Qu Duanyun’s breath caught in his throat, eyes fixated on the figures—

Amidst the blinding light, a clear voice rang out, and the colorful light was instantly repelled by an invisible barrier.

Damn it.

On the wilderness, dust swirled. Horse hooves kicked up a storm while the swords gleamed coldly. The official soldiers, with their armor and spears, intimidating as they were, couldn’t suppress the prominent Taiheng Sect. Their protective spell was incredibly strong and timely, countering the Immortal Assembly barrage.

The Taiheng Sect arrived sooner than expected.

Lifting his eyes, Qu Duanyun saw a man in light-colored combat clothes leading them. Before the man arrived, his calm and composed aura did, standing strong like a rock amidst a storm.

Behind him was a heavy stone sword. It was Yan Qing, the Martial Alliance Leader.

In a daze, their positions seemed to reverse. Now, Yan Qing, on his steed, was looking down at him. The man’s brows were slightly furrowed, with a hint of pity in his eyes.

Qu Duanyun almost choked—Shi Jingzhi was one thing, Yin Zizhu another, but even this bastard offspring of a demon dared to look down and pity him?

A surge of murderous intent grew within him.

“Amitabha.” Sensing the atmosphere change, without waiting for Yan Qing to speak, Monk Juehui stepped forward. The old monk’s voice was deep and resonant. “I bear witness that everything said by the Kushan Sect is true. Qu Duanyun colluded with the Immortal Assembly and betrayed his master. It’s all true!”

The members of the Yueshui Pavilion nodded in agreement, shaking with fear.

As expected, the mood shifted dramatically. Qu Duanyun’s gaze, filled with darkness, finally moved away from Yan Qing.

Everyone from Taiheng was an elite, so now it was inevitable that a big commotion would stir. There were those who were puzzled and those who were cursing. More people find it hard to believe, with a hint of hesitation in their eyes. Qu Duanyun looked at these people one by one, as if he wanted to remember each of them.

Yan Qing ignored him, swung his stone sword, and said loudly, “The witness is here. According to the rules of the martial world, take this person back to Taiheng first!”

“A ghost eye little man bathing with the monkeys*.”

*A monkey crowned (沐猴而冠) Metaphor for appearance or status but has no real ability.

Qu Duanyun’s voice trembled, not knowing how to stop. He instinctively gripped the hilt of his sword, feeling his mouth dry and his right hand cold.

Without instruction, the soldiers didn’t act rashly. They surrounded Qu Duanyun, and those who had been surrounding them now found themselves encircled, creating a rather comedic scene.

“You are all deceived by the Kushan Sect—just tools for their scheme.”

These people weren’t present just now, so they could still be deceived. At this crucial moment of the Hundred-Year Project, the initiative must be taken back.

“I have already taken the position of head of Taiheng, and I have a father-son relationship with Sect Master Qi. Why would I kill him for no reason?”

How could these shortsighted fools disrupt their plans time and time again? Isn’t he, Qu Duanyun, more capable than that?

There was still hope for this situation; there must be a turn of events.

Indeed, Sect Master Qu’s gentlemanly demeanor was well displayed, and with the past relationships considered, there was another commotion within Taiheng. Many showed agreement, and some seemed inclined to side with Qu Duanyun.

He just wanted to silence them moments ago, but now he presented himself as a true gentleman. Shi Zhongyu couldn’t help but be enraged. Just as she was about to retort, she saw Yan Qing ride forward and stop in front of her. “Sect Master Qu, when you return to Taiheng, there will be plenty of time to talk.”

His tone was calm, and his presence gentle, speaking with a softness that had no hint of oppression. The tragic momentum that Qu Duanyun had just built up scattered, and the people of Taiheng calmed down and continued to surround him.

“I didn’t expect that the Chigou Sect hasn’t been dealt with, and yet Taiheng has already rebelled. This is the army sent by the Emperor to suppress bandits. Do you intend to confront the imperial court because of personal grievances in the martial world?”

The flames of dispute that had been rising were easily dismissed by Yan Qing. Qu Duanyun felt as if he was hitting cotton and had to continue his act.

“Everyone from major sects are here. There’s no need to pull Taiheng down with you. Why not each take a step back, capture the rebels, and I’ll let you decide their fate!”

He almost shouted this out, with a hint of sincerity.

“The Immortal Assembly started by slinging mud, and then you came personally. With Sect Master Shi in your hands, what good can come of this?” Hua Jingchun said sarcastically. “Let’s all take a step back. Hand over Sect Master Shi to the honorable Taiheng, and everyone can join me in dealing with the real issue, which is a tangible contribution—”

Juehui, who was usually good-tempered, sarcastically chimed in, “There are bigger issues than personal grudges. The grievances of the royal family cannot compare to the lives of the common people. Sect Master Shi is harmless. It’s better for Patron Qu to clarify the issue of the demon tree first.”

In the end, it was truly a quagmire, impossible to move even an inch.

If they couldn’t be silenced, then he might as well kill as many as possible.

Qu Duanyun laughed loudly, took two steps forward, his face somewhat distorted. “Very well, I’ll make it clear!”

All they saw was his sword glowing brightly, filled with fury and hostility, showing no intention of surrendering. Seizing the moment of everyone’s relaxation, Qu Duanyun suddenly unleashed his full power. He seemed to have chosen his position deliberately earlier, and now he lunged straight at Shi Zhongyu with a powerful sword move. She couldn’t dodge in time and had to block with her sword.

Their qi clashed, and Shi Zhongyu was pushed back more than ten steps, her heels tearing up a patch of grass.

“Scoundrel!” She shouted angrily. “Have you given up even the face of righteousness?”

Qu Duanyun attacked her like a violent storm. Yan Qing and Juehui tried to intervene but were stopped by the soldiers. The people of Taiheng, caught between “rebels” and “avenging the sect leader”, also hesitated for a moment before they took action.

The soldiers, though not as skilled as those from Taiheng, were all battle-hardened and ruthless. Qu Duanyun was desperate, and these soldiers fought like bloodthirsty dogs. The two groups tangled up, with neither side gaining an upper hand.

But in the end, dogs couldn’t beat wolves.

Taking advantage of the soldiers being held back, Yin Ci, without blinking, countered Qu Duanyun’s moves. Shi Jingzhi also ignored any martial world code of honor and waved his Medicine Cures Illness flag to attack Qu Duanyun’s back. Both were ruthless and worked perfectly in tandem, using their most powerful moves.

Qu Duanyun quickly retracted his technique when he got hit, and his vital qi surged violently within his internal organs, causing him to spit out a mouthful of fresh blood. He wanted to move forward, but Yin Ci blocked his way entirely, preventing him from reaching anyone. When he tried to move back, Shi Jingzhi was right behind him, not hiding his murderous intent, with each move fiercer than the last.

Even with the protection of the power equivalent to a True Immortal, Qu Duanyun was no match for these two monster-like figures. He saw that Shi Jingzhi showed no mercy; the scourge turned his head and lit a golden flame on the pole, aiming it straight at Qu Duanyun’s heart—

Monk Juehui’s eyes narrowed, and Protector Hua paused in action. The battlefield seemed to freeze, waiting for the bloodshed that was about to occur.

“Sect Master Shi.”

At this critical moment, Yan Qing calmly spoke up.

“You’re still branded as a traitor; it’s best if you don’t make a move. Matters of Taiheng should be resolved by Taiheng. Leave him to me and Senior Shi.”

With this interruption, Qu Duanyun immediately got a chance to breathe. He jumped back, escaping from Shi Jingzhi’s grasp. Shi Jingzhi’s facial features tightened, clearly unhappy. Only when Yin Ci stepped in did he reluctantly retract his flag, looking like someone had just stolen food from him.

“What do you mean ‘matters of Taiheng should be resolved by Taiheng’? You probably want to spare him…”

“If he must die, he should first apologize at Qi Xundao’s grave.” Yan Qing interrupted Shi Jingzhi as he dismounted. “Do you want him to go and disturb the departed Sect Master Qi with his hatred?”

Qu Duanyun spat out bloody saliva, his face showing only disdain and anger. He adjusted his sleeves and stood with the remnants of his defeated troops with an expression hard to read.

He couldn’t outwit or overpower his opponents. They always seemed to be one step ahead of him. His beloved Taiheng now sought to capture him like a criminal.

The humiliation of defeat was unbearable, but…

“It’s fine, it’s fine.”

Qu Duanyun’s face showed both resignation and madness, like a cornered wild animal. His eyes reddened slightly, and there was a hint of bloodthirstiness in his tone.

“Even if the Child of Desire was deceived by the Root of Calamity… losing to a Child of Desire—perhaps it’s fate. This is the will of heaven, which us mortals truly cannot resist.”

“I can’t protect everyone here on my own. Master, please lend me your strength.”

A piece of cloth fell from his sleeve, faint remnants of magical qi still lingering on it.

A long sigh echoed in the wind, and where the cloth fell, the figure of a man slowly appeared. Just like 24 years ago, in the maple forest of Juyi Valley.

“Knowing when to admit defeat is also a virtue.”

Jiang Youyue smiled slightly.

Around the Imperial Preceptor, a pair of massive hands slowly appeared, like bat wings, enclosing him. In an instant, the world was shrouded in darkness, and an overwhelming force emanated from him. Everyone froze in place, unable to move even an inch.

“To do something is to do it thoroughly. This is what General Yin taught us. After all this farce, it’s time to clean up.”

Chapter 64

The long-awaited formal start of school finally arrived. Early in the morning, Ling Xiao invited Red Head and others to the classroom, only to find that many people arrived even earlier than they did. The classroom was spacious, with only a few sets of desks and chairs placed near the walls. All the students sat on the carpet, forming a semicircle.

At the opening ceremony, the new students had already met each other. But there were so many people present at that time, and only today did they have a chance to formally introduce themselves face-to-face. Ling Xiao, always good at socializing, greeted almost everyone. Suddenly, he pointed to the corner.

“Ah, isn’t that the duo who got two stars during the entrance exam?” He pointed towards a place where one person was sitting on the floor while the other was resting his head on the first person’s lap, deeply… asleep. They chose a secluded spot, probably not wanting to be disturbed. Everyone else maintained their distance, except for Ling Xiao.

“Hello, I’m Ling Xiao from Bikong. Can I get to know you?” The awake one was stunned for a moment and then reached out. “Yu Ji, from Chunyang.”

“I remember seeing you two on the open day,” Ling Xiao recalled. They had efficiently dealt with an S-level imitation beast, leaving a deep impression.

“I also remember you. You were the one in the wheelchair.”

“Uh…”

“But you did well in the subsequent tests. We also saw your performance in yesterday’s school rule challenge. You are impressive.”

“Not at all. It was all thanks to my… Ying Feng helping me from below.”

“Is Ying Feng your Qizhu?”

“Uh… Yes.” Ling Xiao scratched his head embarrassedly. Ling Xiao found this person quite friendly and curiously pointed to the person next to him. “Why is he sleeping?”

Yu Ji gave a strained smile. “He developed a moderate mental injury and a sleep disorder due to some accidents after his coming-of-age ceremony. He will fall asleep whenever he has a chance, just like now.”

Ling Xiao could deeply relate. Disordered sleep during the turbulent period led him to always worry about not getting enough sleep. Whenever he woke up, he would instinctively cling to Ying Feng, as if he couldn’t sleep soundly without contact. Although the disordered period only lasted three days, the sequelae were permanent.

And he was only mildly affected. Moderate cases were obviously much more severe than his. Although he hadn’t spoken a word to this person, he already felt a sense of mutual understanding and sympathy.

“Let him sleep a little longer. I won’t disturb,” he whispered as he departed.

The instructor entered the classroom, and the chatting students went silent. After a brief introduction, the instructor delved into the lesson.

“Some of you may have already encountered mental powers. What I’m holding is the primary weapon of the Tianxiu people. It’s called a soul crystal, made from a soul stone within a living body combined with other materials. When we channel our mental powers into the crystal, it activates its energy.”

“In the past, every Tianxiu person needed to master the use of the soul crystal. But now, only a few can learn this special skill, and it’s available only to the military, military academies, or certain specific professions.”

Ling Xiao instinctively glanced at Bing Can. As if sensing Ling Xiao’s thoughts, the instructor called out his name. “Bing Can.”

“Present.”

“How did you obtain your soul crystal?”

“I got it from our academy’s doctor. She taught me how to use it. Her Qizi works in the military medical station.”

The instructor nodded. “That makes sense. Can you show it to everyone?”

Bing Can displayed his soul crystal—a tiny white crystal that seemed unremarkable at first glance.

“Different soul crystals have different levels, and each has its own unique effects. The one that Bing Can is holding is the most basic soul crystal in the mental category. After using it, one can quickly check a person’s physical condition. While it may not be as comprehensive as instrument-based checks, it’s very useful on the battlefield.”

“Each of you, being elites from various academies, must learn to use your mental powers within three days and activate a level one soul crystal. That’s our training task for this week.”

The instructor brought out 30 soul crystals for practice.

“Each semester, the department provides everyone with basic soul crystals for practice. But if you need more, you’ll have to buy them yourself or get them custom-made by students specializing in research and development.”

“This is a level 0 soul crystal. It has no actual effect and is purely a teaching tool. Once you learn how to activate it, you will then understand how to use mental powers.”

Everyone stepped forward to take one. Ling Xiao and Bing Can had already met the requirements to use a first-level soul crystal. As for Ying Feng, it went without saying. The three of them held the practice soul crystal in their palms, and as they clenched their fists, the crystal disappeared, leaving only a ball of white light in their hands.

Seeing their performance, the instructor nodded appreciatively, confirming that the caliber of students in this batch was indeed very high.

One after another, several students with great potential gradually mastered the technique. Red Head, upon succeeding, yelled out loud, startling everyone.

“Why are you so loud?” Ling Xiao asked, covering his ears.

“Gathering energy,” he replied, as if it were the most obvious thing.

“Very good.” The instructor allowed the others to continue practicing and then took out a new set of soul crystals.

“Soul crystals are divided into three major categories: physical, elemental, and spiritual. Everyone’s innate constitution is different. The mental power consumed when using a soul crystal varies from person to person. Everyone has a particular strength, which we refer to as a ‘specialization’.”

“Those who specialize in a certain category will consume half the mental power when using the soul crystals of that category. Moreover, only those who specialize can use the high-level soul crystals in that category. Others can only use up to level 7. Specialization is fixed and won’t change with rigorous practice. If you don’t know what your specialization is, you can use this testing crystal. It will randomly draw out a particular strength, helping you to determine your specialty.”

“I see. I’ll go first!” Red Head stepped forward and took one. Holding it in his hand, he concentrated deeply. Seeing his stance, everyone preemptively covered their ears.

“Heh!” Red Head activated the soul crystal in his hand, his arm muscles bulging and veins protruding.

“How do you feel?” the instructor asked.

“I feel full of power!” After saying this, he slapped the wooden table next to the wall with his bare hand. “Ha!”

Everyone had just dropped their hands, but now they quickly raised them again.

The wooden table shattered upon his hit. The instructor nodded. “The power enhancement indicates that you specialize in physical techniques. You’re suited for using soul crystals in the physical category. Remember to pay for the table. Who’s next?”

Ling Xiao found it interesting. “Me!”

He also took a crystal, and as he exerted force with his right hand, his surroundings changed. From indoors, he suddenly found himself outside, with the people inside the room visible through the glass.

The sensation of hanging in midair alarmed him. It was only then that he realized he was on the third floor.

“Ahhhhhhh~~~”

Ying Feng quickly reached out and decisively pulled him back from outside the window.

“Instantaneous movement is also a skill of the physical category. You, like him, specialize in physical techniques. Once your mental power reaches a certain level, you can become as light as a swallow*, safely landing from not only the third floor but even the thirtieth floor using the soul crystal. Even if you were on the rooftop, you’d be unharmed. But until you all reach that proficiency, I suggest you face the hallway for testing.”

*(轻如燕) Idiom referring to someone who moves with agility, grace, and lightness, similar to how a swallow flies smoothly and effortlessly.

Ling Xiao: You could’ve said that earlier!

“I wonder which one I am?” Bing Can took a crystal and held it. A soft white light soon radiated from his hand, creating shimmering spots that flickered around him if they looked carefully.

The instructor beckoned to Red Head. “Come here.”

Obediently, Red Head approached, and the instructor drew a knife, making a cut on his arm.

Red Head: ……

“Now place your hand on his wound.”

Bing Can did so, and everyone watched in astonishment as the wound on Red Head’s arm gradually healed under the illumination, leaving no trace.

“I had guessed when you used the soul crystal to scan the body that you might specialize in spiritual techniques, and indeed it’s true. The skill you just used is called Basic Healing, which can heal minor external injuries. Note that while offensive skills can harm any race, healing skills only work on the Tianxiu people and are ineffective on outsiders.”

“My Qizhu is amazing! Spiritual specialization is awesome!” Red Head cheered. “But why did you have to cut my hand?”

“That’s that. Next!”

Now it was Ying Feng’s turn. He activated a testing crystal like the others, but other than the crystal disappearing, nothing happened.

“What’s going on?” Ling Xiao asked in surprise.

The instructor seemed puzzled as well. “Try again.”

Ying Feng tried once more, but the result remained unchanged.

“If that’s the case… There’s only one explanation. You belong to an extremely rare category: the special.”

“Special category?” Everyone chorused.

“Not belonging to physical, elemental, or spiritual specialization. He doesn’t benefit from reduced mental power consumption when using any crystal.”

“That bad?” Ling Xiao couldn’t help but comment.

“Not bad at all. On the contrary, this kind of ability is very rare. Because he’s not limited by a specialization, he can use high-level soul crystals from all categories. His strength will only grow as time goes on. I really didn’t expect our department to have a student from the special category. Individuals with this innate trait are extremely rare; there are probably only one or two in the entire school.”

The instructor took out a soul crystal, slightly larger than any he had shown before.

“You can use the Qizi Summoning, which means your mental power can at least drive a level 4 soul crystal. Try it.”

Ying Feng took it. It was apparent he had to exert more effort than before to channel his mental power into it. Yet strangely, there was no reaction.

“Haha.” Red Head laughed out loud. “I think you’re not of the special category but the ‘waste category’. Any soul crystal in your hands becomes useless.”

Deep down, the instructor silently praised Ying Feng. It wasn’t merely about having enough mental power to activate a soul crystal that had never been used. Many needed tens to hundreds of attempts to do so, and then even more practice to consolidate the skill. This student indeed had exceptional talent. With his rare special-category ability and given enough time, he’d definitely match up to General Fu Yao.

“Don’t worry, look.” The instructor pointed behind the crowd.

“Ahhhhhh!” Behind them, Ling Xiao suddenly cried out. A strange mechanism rapidly assembled on his right arm. The shining silver metal culminated in a shape resembling a dragon’s head at the forefront. Ling Xiao could even feel power surging from within it.

Without needing any instruction, he instinctively gripped his right wrist with his left hand, raised his arm, and aimed the cannon-like structure at the instructor.

The instructor calmly pointed outside. “Shoot out the window.”

Ling Xiao shifted, and with a jolt of his hand, a light projectile shot out, shattering the glass and exploding in the distance.

“Wow!” Everyone was stunned. After the shot, the device on Ling Xiao’s arm dispersed into a light smoke.

“That’s awesome!” Ling Xiao excitedly wished he could shoot again.

“See? This is our Joint Combat Department’s unique combat style. As the Qizi’s mental power grows, the power and frequency of the projectiles will increase. Moreover, the Qizhu can also use enchanted soul crystals to add elemental properties like electricity, fire, and ice to the projectiles. Impressive, isn’t it? By the way, remember to pay for the broken window.”

“Can’t students from other departments use our soul crystals?”

“They can, but they have their training focuses, which differ from our teaching objectives. In the Joint Combat Department, the primary consideration is coordination—how to maximize the combined potential of two people.”

“When can we master skills like we just saw?” Red Head eagerly asked.

“Don’t rush. Level 4 soul crystals are our first-year teaching objectives. By the end of this term, everyone here is expected to master them.”

“Doesn’t that mean Ling Xiao and the others have nothing to do for a whole year?”

“Not at all. The most significant difference between our department and others is that many of the soul crystals we use have emotional value requirements, which is why emotional value is one of the entrance exam’s focal points.”

“Some soul crystals, besides mental power, require sufficient emotional values to activate. No matter how high your mental power, you can’t use them without enough emotional value. The higher the emotional value, the more pronounced the effect. If you focus only on cultivating mental power, those leading now will gradually fall behind.”

“So, considering everyone’s different situations, I’ve formulated personalized teaching plans for each of you. Have a look.”

The instructor tapped on his terminal, and each student received the transmitted schedule.

Upon opening his schedule, Ling Xiao’s expression changed. “What is this?”

Red Head peeked over and burst into laughter.

Ling Xiao’s Wednesday and Friday afternoon class was simply: Dating.

“This is… too much.” Ling Xiao leaned over to check Ying Feng’s. “Is yours the same?”

A stoic Ying Feng replied, “What do you think?”

‘Okay.’ Ling Xiao thought he asked a pointless question. But… “How do we even take this class?”

“You all have the freedom to decide. However, by the end of this term, your emotional value must reach seven stars. It’s our department’s basic requirement. Fail to achieve this, and you’ll be forcibly transferred.”

Pointing to Ying Feng and Yu Ji, he emphasized, “I’m talking about you two. Got it?”

The four with mixed feelings responded, “Yes.”

The author has something to say:

Add up your birth year, month, and day until you get a single-digit number to determine your specialization type.

For example, for October 14, 2014: 2014+10+14=2028; 2+0+2+8=12; 1+2=3.

Results 1-3 are for physical specialization, 4-6 are elemental specialization, 7-9 are spiritual specialization, and 0 is the special category.

Kinky Thoughts:

Apparently, I’m the spiritual specialization. That’s pretty accurate since I like playing healers/support.

Chapter 63

[Royal Sky Arc]

Ling Xiao methodically fastened the buttons of his shirt, looking in the mirror. A young man in a sky-blue uniform appeared, looking handsome and dashing. From today on, he was an official first-year student at the Royal Sky Military Academy, about to embark on a new chapter of his academic journey.

The bathroom door opened, and his authorized roommate stepped out, clad in a deep blue uniform. Since their last encounter, Ying Feng had grown a few centimeters taller. His slender figure was almost perfect, with his muscular outline concealed under the uniform. Ling Xiao was more aware than anyone of the strength hidden beneath those fabrics.

This was their new dormitory, almost twice the size of the previous one in Bikong. Besides the bedroom and bathroom, there was also a living room, essentially making it a one-bedroom suite.

Today was the academy’s opening ceremony. Everyone was to attend in their formal attire. Ying Feng, all prepared, tossed something towards Ling Xiao, which he caught as it traced an arc through the air.

Higher education and primary education both spanned twelve grades. The difference was that students here advanced a grade every half year, with the curriculum lasting six years. Different badges distinguished different grade levels.

Facing the mirror, Ling Xiao carefully pinned the badge Ying Feng had thrown to his left chest. He inspected his attire from head to toe to ensure everything was in order.

“I’m ready!”

“Let’s go.”

Ling Xiao, full of energy, opened the door and coincidentally met the students from the room opposite heading out. They greeted him cheerfully.

“Ling Xiao, Ying Feng, are you guys ready? Let’s go together!”

These were their new classmates at Royal Sky, Bing Can and Qian Si—Ling Xiao preferred to call him “Red Head”, often forgetting his real name. They now lived in opposite rooms. Red Head and Ling Xiao had grown closer, and in the words of his Qizhu, it was “easier for members of the same species to communicate.”

The group of four set off from their dormitory towards the playground, encountering students from various grades at Royal Sky. Some were senior students, while others were freshmen like them.

“Wow, look! There are still fledglings in the higher academy!” Ling Xiao exclaimed, pointing at a few students in green uniforms, as if he had discovered a new world.

Bing Can explained, “Those fledglings who have completed their twelve years in the primary academy and haven’t had their coming-of-age ceremony are allowed to advance to the military academy. And those who can get in are indeed powerful, as they’re competing against adults.”

“So, that’s how it is.” Ling Xiao mused. “I wonder if we’ll have any fledglings in our major?”

Bing Can, holding back a smile, replied, “We’re in the Joint Combat major, which doesn’t admit fledglings. However, the advantage for them is that if they undergo the coming-of-age ceremony while at the academy, they can apply to change their major, provided they pass the test.”

Ling Xiao admired Bing Can’s detailed explanation. “You seem very familiar with this place.”

“All this information is available online. If you search thoroughly, you can find it.”

Ling Xiao scratched the back of his head, embarrassed. He had only focused on his own part and hadn’t read anything else.

The playground was crowded. The Joint Combat Department was right in the center.

“Do you see it? We’re the watershed of the whole school.”

Watershed*?”

*Clarity: It’s referring to the drainage divide. Basically, he’s making the reference that they are in the middle, where both sides converge (see his explanation below), dividing the two areas.

“To our right are majors related to combat, command, and management, with the Qizhu making up the majority. To the left are research, medicine, and communication, among other ground majors, where most students are Qizis. Our major is the only one where the ratio of Qizhu to Qizi is always 1:1.”

At a glance, Ling Xiao saw it just as he described. The further to the right, the fewer light blue uniforms there were, and on the farthest right, it was almost entirely dark blue uniforms. On the other hand, the left side was the opposite: light blue uniforms were interspersed with several dark blue ones, and there were even occasional green ones. The Joint Combat Department was like a clear dividing line, separating the two sides.

The opening ceremony began with the principal’s speech, followed by addresses from the representatives of old and new students. To everyone’s surprise, Bing Can was the representative of the new students. As he took the stage, Red Head clapped so hard his hands turned as red as his hair.

“…On behalf of all the new students, I solemnly swear allegiance to our country and nation, to never betray, to obey commands, to uphold discipline…”

Down below, all the freshmen echoed in unison:

“…With our lives, we will protect the fledglings and defend the lighthouse, vow to guard the Tree of Souls never letting the enemy capture our bodies. Our soul is immortal, and our determination never ending…”

After the opening ceremony concluded, classes would officially start the next day, leaving them with half a day to explore.

“Let’s go see the starship!” Red Head proposed excitedly.

“There’s a starship in the academy?” Ling Xiao asked, equally intrigued.

“Yes, it’s a retired military starship placed here for students’ practical training!”

“Awesome!”

Both were eager, and Bing Can and Ying Feng had no objections. They summoned the academy’s map, descended to the third underground level, and were awestruck by the immense starship before them.

As they sought the entrance to the starship, a man who appeared to be a custodian stopped them.

“Sorry, it’s not open for tours.”

“We are students of Royal Sky,” Ling Xiao explained.

“Only students with related majors are allowed in. Which major are you from?”

“Joint Combat.”

“You’re not permitted. Please leave.”

“Why?”

“It’s the academy’s rules. If you wish to enter, you must challenge the rule.”

“Challenge the rule? What’s that?”

“The first rule of Royal Sky—The strong make the rules. Anyone strong enough can challenge the existing rules.”

Ling Xiao stared at Ying Feng in astonishment. “How do you know that?”

“I thought reading the school rules before enrolling was common sense.”

Ling Xiao: …Damn it.

Bing Can tried to stifle a laugh as he relayed information he’d read from the school’s discussion board. “That’s right, the top twenty-three rules are held by the principal and other administrators. The rest are held by individual students. If you feel a rule is unfair, you can challenge its owner. If you win, you can modify the rule. Even the principal can be challenged, though no one has successfully changed the top twenty-three rules since the school’s inception. If the owner of the rule you challenge has graduated, a representative from the Student Arbitration Committee will take up the challenge. Of course, once you hold a rule, others might challenge you anytime. If you don’t respond, you automatically forfeit your rights to that rule.”

“That’s amazing!”

The custodian brought the conversation back on track. “So, do you want to challenge the rule?”

……

“Quick, look! Someone’s challenging the school rules!”

“Who would do that on the first day of school?”

“They say it’s a first-year freshman.”

“A freshman? The newbies these days really are fearless.”

Ling Xiao stood on the stage, not expecting such a vast audience that packed the area below the stage.

His opponent had already arrived, dressed in a deep blue uniform with a tenth-grade badge, highlighting the stark difference between the two.

The adjudicator took the microphone.

“According to the first rule of the Royal Sky Military Academy: The strong make the rules. Anyone who questions the rules can issue a challenge.”

“A student of our school has questioned rule number ninety-seven, which states: Students not in the relevant majors are not allowed to enter the starship for any reason. Violators will be reprimanded.”

“Original rule holder: Starship Command Tenth Grade, Chi Cheng.

“Challenger: Joint Operations First Grade, Ling Xiao.

“Game rules: Falling or landing on the ground for ten seconds means you lose. The challenge begins now!”

“You got guts, first-year.” Chi Cheng didn’t take his opponent seriously at all. A first year challenging him? What a joke.

“I don’t want to bully you, so for fairness, I won’t use my mental power against you.”

After saying this, he stretched out both hands, and more than a dozen soul crystals fell to the ground, bouncing everywhere.

Ling Xiao slightly relaxed, but considering his opponent was a Qizhu, even in physical strength, he was at a disadvantage. Ling Xiao bent down slightly, not just out of nervousness but also with a hint of excitement.

“Go Ling Xiao!” Red Head shouted from below.

Chi Cheng gestured for him to come forth. “Bring it.”

The moment Ling Xiao moved, he quickly threw three punches at Chi Cheng, who didn’t even blink while blocking them. But those were feints. With the last punch, Ling Xiao took a cross-step to his back and kicked him square in the back. All this happened in the blink of an eye, and Chi Cheng, who had underestimated the freshman, was kicked back several steps.

“Oh? Not bad,” Chi Cheng said, flexing his wrist. “Now, I’ll get serious.”

As he finished speaking, he disappeared, with only countless shadows flashing in different directions.

So fast! Ling Xiao was shocked. Is this the level of a tenth grade Qizhu? He couldn’t even catch his movements.

Suddenly, he felt hits on his left arm, right arm, and back without even seeing his opponent’s position. The last hit came from the front. Ling Xiao braced the ground with one hand, getting pushed back several meters and stopping just at the edge of the stage.

“Coming for more?” Chi Cheng asked.

“Yes!” As Ling Xiao charged head-on, his opponent vanished. “What?”

“I’m here.” Chi Cheng’s voice came from behind, followed by a force that sent Ling Xiao flying.

On the ground, Ling Xiao rolled and stood up, defiantly saying, “Again!”

By the third time Ling Xiao was knocked down, the crowd sighed and shook their heads. The challenger was no match, and the outcome seemed certain.

“You’re quite persistent.” Chi Cheng observed as Ling Xiao got up again, injured but with an even sharper look. “Alright, let’s end this quickly.”

Chi Cheng started walking faster and faster until he became a blur. Ling Xiao, nervous, tried to predict his next move.

Right.

A familiar voice echoed in Ling Xiao’s mind. Without thinking, he threw a punch to the right, hitting his target!

Behind.

He executed a spinning kick, hitting Chi Cheng in the chest, stopping him in his tracks.

After hitting twice in a row, Chi Cheng clutched his chest and frowned. Was it just a coincidence?

It must be just a coincidence. With his skill, there’s no way he could see my moves clearly.

Realizing this, Chi Cheng felt relieved. He increased his speed and surrounded Ling Xiao from all sides.

Inside the encirclement, Ling Xiao paradoxically relaxed. He closed his eyes, and his entire demeanor showed no sign of defense.

What’s going on? Not only was Chi Cheng puzzled, but the audience below was also confused.

Perhaps he was just putting on an act. With a shift in his form, Chi Cheng launched an attack towards the man in the center of the field.

Front.

Ling Xiao gently jumped backward.

Behind.

He performed a backflip.

45-degree angle from the right.

He took a small leap to the left.

Lower body.

He responded with a cartwheel.

The audience was in awe. Chi Cheng’s moves had clearly accelerated, yet he couldn’t even touch a hair of Ling Xiao, who hadn’t even opened his eyes since the start.

As the battle went on, it became a spectacle. Ling Xiao’s evasive maneuvers were mystifying. No matter from which angle Chi Cheng attacked, he couldn’t touch him.

“What’s happening? Does he have eyes on his forehead?”

No, even when Chi Cheng attacked from behind, Ling Xiao evaded it!

Bing Can, watching intently, realized something was off. Turning, he understood when he saw Ying Feng’s expression. While Ling Xiao’s eyes were closed, his real ‘eyes’ were here with Ying Feng. Ying Feng could see every move Chi Cheng made, even predict them, allowing Ling Xiao to anticipate and counteract. Their coordination was eerily perfect, as if one person was in control.

The once one-sided cheers from the crowd had shifted. They not only appreciated Ling Xiao’s performance but also desired to see the insides of the starship with him!

At that moment, Ling Xiao on the stage kept stepping back, coming increasingly close to the edge of the competition platform.

“He’s about to fall off!” Many couldn’t help but shout out as a warning.

Chi Cheng sneered internally, thinking it was too late. Ling Xiao’s heel was only a step away from the edge. With full force, Chi Cheng rushed towards him. From any angle, there was no way he could dodge this time!

“Watch out!” The crowd shouted.

Now!

Ying Feng issued the final command.

Ling Xiao vanished from the public’s view.

Where did he go?!

Chi Cheng, suspended in midair, widened his eyes in disbelief. Where had he gone?

“There!” The keen-eyed among the audience finally spotted him.

Ling Xiao’s body was suspended in the air, his toes hooked on the edge of the platform. From Chi Cheng’s perspective, it looked as if he had suddenly fallen off.

But by the time he saw Ling Xiao, his own body had already flown off the platform.

Ling Xiao used his toes to propel himself into the air, appearing right behind Chi Cheng.

How is this possible? Did I just lose to a first year Qizi?

“Sorry about this.” Ling Xiao, behind him, had already opened his eyes. He didn’t hold back in his kick.

“Beep—”

“The challenger hits the ground; attack valid!”

“Challenge over. The ownership of the school rules changes! The new enforcer of Rule 97 is—first year from the Joint Combat Department, Ling Xiao!”

“Ling Xiao! You’re amazing, Ling Xiao!” Red Head cheered excitedly.

Ling Xiao located the loudest cheerer, Red Head, in the crowd and then saw Ying Feng nearby, grinning at him with a silly smile that only the two of them understood.

“Good fight.” Chi Cheng jumped back onto the platform. “I underestimated you. But you did great. Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” Ling Xiao shook his hand.

“But let me remind you, I lost because I didn’t use my mental powers. If I had used the soul crystal against you, you would’ve stood no chance. Future challengers won’t be so easy. Keep it up.”

“Mm!” Ling Xiao was very clear that today’s victory was pure luck. In a genuine one-on-one match, he couldn’t possibly be his opponent.

The adjudicator approached. “Now you can make changes to Rule 97. Would you like to lift the ban on visiting the starship?”

“Uh, if everyone visits anytime, won’t it bother the students studying there? Can we make it open once a week?”

“Of course, you are now the rule-maker.”

“Let’s make it Sundays,” he said. He was usually exhausted on Saturdays and not really in the mood for tours.

“The new Rule 97 is officially announced: The starship is open to the public every Sunday, allowing all students to visit.”

The crowd cheered.

“Let’s go.” Chi Cheng generously invited him. “Even though today isn’t Sunday, I can make an exception and give you a tour.”

“Can my Qizhu and friends come too?” He excitedly asked without thinking.

“Of course, let’s all go.”

Chi Cheng hopped off the platform and turned to see Ling Xiao still standing there. “Why aren’t you coming?”

Ling Xiao’s awkward smile froze on his face. Why did he blurt that out so naturally without thinking?

He nervously glanced down, relieved to see that Ying Feng had turned away. That was close; he mustn’t have heard.

Bing Can was curious, noticing that after Ling Xiao asked the question, Ying Feng had turned away. “Ling Xiao invited us. Aren’t you coming?”

Pretending he hadn’t heard anything, Ying Feng replied without turning back, “I am.”

Chapter 148: Trap

The imperial court’s bandit suppression team went into battle lightly equipped. Qu Duanyun quickly arrived in Qizhou.

The weather was good, and Qizhou should have been adorned with blooming spring flowers and willows like clouds. But now, the flowers were trampled into mud, and the bark of the willows was gnawed clean by passing livestock due to neglect. Dirty stains covered the stone slabs, and most of the shops for tourists were shut, with only a few brave ones still doing business.

Tourists of the past were either gone or dispersed. Every home’s door was tightly shut, leaving the city desolate and lonely.

Even the temples in Qizhou weren’t spared from the hands of the Chigou Sect. It was unknown how brutally they acted, but a wall of the temple had collapsed considerably. Fortunately, the statue of the Imperial Celestial seemed minimally damaged and had been covered by the people of the Immortal Assembly. All the valuable gold and treasuries were stolen, and the usually lively courtyard was empty.

The temple of the Imperial Celestial had stood in many places for over a hundred years. Even those who didn’t sincerely believe in it might have grown a fondness due to familiarity. With the tragic sight of the revered temple before them, Qu Duanyun, who mixed in with the bandit suppression team, heard sighs of pity.

“Chaotic times, truly chaotic,” a soldier beside him lamented. “If all the able-bodied men hadn’t gone to war, would they dare to act so brazenly? Instead of defending their homeland, they choose to loot and fight amongst themselves. Bandits will be bandits!”

“Indeed, it’s said that even the elderly tried to stop them by kneeling. The new Patriarch of the Chigou Sect is unyielding. Even the elderly were pushed aside. Everyone says that the Chigou Sect used to deal well with the imperial court, but who knows what madness has taken them now.”

“Desperation, perhaps,” another added mysteriously. “The new Patriarch has a good relationship with the rebel Shi Jingzhi. The gold they loot supports him. But even with gold, the common people have become complacent. They can’t even escape in time, let alone join a rebellion.”

Qu Duanyun couldn’t help but smile.

After all, when it came to ruling the nation, the Emperor was diligent and had not made major mistakes, let alone inciting public outrage. Facing external enemies, although the imperial court’s reaction was slow, the people were even slower. They either ran or hid. The crisis hadn’t fully hit them, so they weren’t ready to rise up yet.

It was as hard to incite a rebellion in Great Yun as it was to grow crops between stones.

Jiang Youyue’s “treason” label was so tight on Shi Jingzhi that he had no room to wriggle out—surrounded, Shi Jingzhi was now trapped near Kushan. He no longer had the time or means to find another way out.

Of course, the reason the Chigou Sect’s Patriarch attacked the temple might have been to find out about the appearance of the “Children of Desire”. Perhaps their main aim wasn’t the gold, but to displace the people and destroy the statues. Theoretically, if the flesh idols couldn’t absorb vital qi, it would extend Shi Jingzhi’s life.

Unfortunately, he chose the wrong path.

The temples were just built in the busiest places, and the absorption range of the flesh idol wasn’t small. The Hanging Tree could naturally absorb vital qi, let alone the flesh statues imitating a Hanging Tree—whether people believed in the Imperial Celestial or not, the idol would still absorb vital qi. As long as people had desires, even if they no longer visited temples, the idol would continue to absorb, albeit slower.

And could the Hanging Tree beneath the flesh idol be easily destroyed?

This way, they cut off every escape route for Shi Jingzhi.

Only by consuming the Shirou could one be liberated from this chaos. Qu Duanyun was curious about how Shi Jingzhi, facing such a desperate situation, would counter.

Leaving everything else aside, the move at the Yueshui Pavilion was a terrible mistake.

The roots of the Hanging Tree were unseen and untouched, and only masters believed in them. The common people wouldn’t be convinced. When Shi Jingzhi ascended the throne, they would have time to deal with the leaders and informants.

The Martial Arts Conference was personal combat, so accidents could occur. Now, having both time and location advantages, they wouldn’t make mistakes again—

The Luojiu army surged forward powerfully, while their own troops were limited. The Immortal Assembly “kindly” organized many of their own and recruited some locals from Qizhou, assembling an army of thousands.

In contrast, the “rebels” were a mess. At the base of Kushan, numerous displaced people and bandits gathered. The surroundings were dirty and smelly. No organized force was visible. Everyone looked miserable, and one could only wonder where the gold from the Chigou Sect was spent.

Outside the abandoned town was a vast wasteland—hot during the day, cold at night, occasionally visited by wild dogs—a place the displaced people disliked. The soldiers, however, found it suitable for camping.

The enemy was insignificant, barely a shadow. The soldiers were relaxed, and the atmosphere lightened.

However, just as everyone let their guard down, a lone silhouette appeared on the wasteland. When they recognized the figure, a small disturbance rippled through the army.

The man’s brows and eyes were picturesque, dressed in a sharp black robe. His long hair was even darker than crow feathers by a shade. He walked alone among the wild grass with his long black hair fluttering in the wind, like an evil god descended from the heavens, or a fierce ghost bound to this land.

Across from them stood only one person, yet his aura was as overwhelming as a tempestuous wind or mighty waves crashing onshore. There was no emotion on his face, but even the youngest soldier could feel his hostility and hatred.

It was Yin Ci.

He came alone, without the shadow of Shi Jingzhi by his side. The young leading officer looked at Qu Duanyun and saw him shake his head. Immediately, the officer made a gesture, and the soldiers stood still.

Qu Duanyun rode a white horse, breaking from the formation and charging straight at Yin Ci.

Aware of Yin Ci’s reputation, he felt no fear. As the saying goes, overpowering ten with a single move. While Yin Ci was skilled in martial arts, he lacked inner force. If Shi Jingzhi had been with him, they might have complemented each other. But now, even if he ordered his troops to move in, they could easily subdue him.

But he had more pressing matters at hand.

With a light tap of his foot, Qu Duanyun leapt from his horse. Several thin streams of qi shot out. Soft explosions echoed from all directions as he spun gracefully back onto his horse.

“Evil qi from the Soft Fish Demon’s eye.” He drew out his piercing black sword, pointing it directly at Yin Ci. “Such trivial tricks, yet you want to play them a second time?”

Yin Ci halted in his tracks.

He looked up at Qu Duanyun with a chilling smirk. Without saying a word, his gaze swept over the army behind Qu Duanyun.

“Three thousand five hundred men.” Yin Ci murmured to himself. Several of the precious Soft Fish Demon eyes were damaged, but he didn’t seem to care.

Qu Duanyun frowned. “Founding General Yin Zizhu, resorting to such petty tricks, it’s really unimpressive.”

Simply reusing old tricks, trying to turn people against each other with illusions. The Immortal Assembly had been embarrassed at a martial arts conference once but wouldn’t be again.

“The Taiheng sect leader collaborating with the Immortal Assembly—isn’t that disgraceful?”

“In dealing with the rebels, it’s a matter of national importance. Not to mention Taiheng, didn’t the followers of your Alliance Leader also stay out of it?”

Qu Duanyun was full of confidence.

He was only maintaining order in the name of the Sect Master of Taiheng; officially, this army still belonged to the imperial court, and nobody could find fault. But once Shi Jingzhi obtained the Shirou, it would be hard to say which Emperor this “diluted” army would support.

Yin Ci chuckled, neither agreeing or disagreeing, his face saying, “Just as I thought.”

He quietly observed Qu Duanyun for a moment, then motioned with his left hand. The bushes behind him rustled, revealing a blood-soaked bag. Yin Ci opened the bag to reveal human limbs cut into several pieces.

Despite the blood, the limbs were elegant and beautiful, unlike those of ordinary people. But the wounds were clearly not Yin Ci’s doing. With no trace of Shi Jingzhi, could it be…

Qu Duanyun’s gaze grew colder.

Yin Ci laughed. “I wouldn’t be so foolish as to kill him. Thanks to all of you, I’ve been perfecting the art of dissecting living beings over the years.”

The blood-soaked limbs lay scattered, and Yin Ci’s eyes grew even wilder.

“Three hundred years, and the Xu Clan remains the same, as do the traitors. I thought Shi Jingzhi was insightful, but in the end, he’s just another coward. Now, even if he had the power, he can’t use it.”

“Don’t worry, even if he’s injured to half his body, the True Immortal can heal him. Even if you killed him, we could still raise the next Child of Desire.”

Qu Duanyun coldly retorted.

“Before that, we’ll seal you back in the Northwestern Great Prohibition. No one will steal mercury to save you this time… Yin Zizhu, by the time you emerge, my Great Yun will have unified the world, for generations to come.”

Yin Ci drew his Hanging Shadow Sword. “Instead of making idle boasts, better save the Child of Desire. With his limbs gone, how much longer do you think he has to live? It would be such a letdown if the main character dies during the play.”

With that, he lunged forward, aiming a killing blow directly at Qu Duanyun’s throat. His sword’s wind was chilling, more treacherous than the Bone Sweeping Sword technique.

Qu Duanyun’s scalp tingle, and he swiftly dodged. The Hanging Shadow Sword adjusted its trajectory, slashing at the horse’s neck. The white horse neighed, blood spattering, as Qu Duanyun barely escaped the sword’s edge.

Facing just one opponent, the soldiers behind hesitated, unsure whether to intervene. Qu Duanyun parried Yin Ci’s fierce strikes while his mind turned quickly—

Infighting?

Shi Jingzhi treasured his life to the extreme. Perhaps it was his overwhelming desire for life that led him to try and secretly steal the Shirou. Unfortunately, he was discovered by Yin Ci. That man had formidable inner force, but now he was weak and frail, so it wasn’t impossible for him to be controlled by Yin Ci.

If understood in this way, everything from the chaotic mess to minor resistances becomes easier to grasp.

Yin Ci dared not kill Shi Jingzhi directly, for he was a True Immortal. So he disabled him, hiding Shi Jingzhi in a secluded corner, waiting to slowly drain his life so that even the True Immortal couldn’t save him. The master and disciple of the Kushan Sect turned against each other, and outside, everyone panicked. The defenses naturally collapsed.

…Shi Jingzhi could not die yet.

Waiting for the next Child of Desire to grow would take at least ten to twenty years. Although the True Immortal could intervene and stabilize the chaos, supporting the Imperial Preceptor’s linage, this war would inevitably weaken Great Yun. If Shi Jingzhi died at this critical moment, it would be a bad deal.

“This man is also a rebel!” Qu Duanyun dodged the sword attacks and shouted. “Shi Jingzhi is hidden nearby; search quickly!”

As he spoke, he released a signal flare from his sleeve. The flare exploded in a bright red in the clear sky, drawing attention.

Now he was trying to save someone, and Taiheng had no reason to stand by.

Who could have thought that the bandit suppression team would have to search the countryside for someone? The soldiers were confused but could only obey and split into several groups. Of the more than three thousand, only a few hundred remained, looking more scattered than the wilderness bushes.

With a few hundred men, they could handle Yin Ci. All Qu Duanyun needed was to buy time until Taiheng arrived.

“If I were you, I’d have hidden away with him. Did you come out to fight because you’re afraid you won’t lose quickly enough?” Qu Duanyun defended cautiously, retreating towards where the most people were.

“I don’t want to flee like a drowning dog. It’s a pity you damaged the Soft Fish Demon Eye. I originally wanted to broadcast this scene… What does it feel like to fail at the last moment—isn’t it a pity to miss it?”

Yin Ci’s sword was like a rainstorm, but his breathing remained steady. The hostility around him grew stronger, resembling a vengeful ghost from hell. Qu Duanyun was well-prepared, but even with magical artifacts, he couldn’t withstand such violent attacks.

“There will be successors even if you kill me. We want greatness for Great Yun, yet you wish to destroy this golden age.” Qu Duanyun deliberately started a conversation.

“Greatness?” Yin Ci laughed. “In poor families, the elderly don’t live past sixty, and the young die of injuries and illnesses. In the end, your Immortal Assembly feeds human lives to the Hanging Tree. What kind of prosperity are you talking about? It’s all the same*!”

*Six of one and half a dozen of the other (半斤八两) Idiom referring to the choices being no different from each other.

Despite Qu Duanyun starting the conversation, he felt a sudden bitterness in his heart. Many faces flashed through his mind, bringing a familiar feeling of nausea.

This man had lived for over a hundred years but still couldn’t see the truth of the world.

“Why pamper and indulge those who are incredibly foolish and inherently lazy? Our relationship with the Hanging Tree is merely a mutual benefit!”

With a surge of vital qi on his Guanwu Sword, the air around Qu Duanyun distorted. He yelled, “My father once made me personally farm and trade to experience the world. If those people tried harder and thought more, they wouldn’t suffer so much. The weak are detested by the heavens. What’s wrong with survival of the fittest?”

During Qu Duanyun’s outburst, Yin Ci was caught off guard. His left shoulder was deeply cut, almost severing his arm. A mistake lost him the advantage, and Qu Duanyun seized the moment.

“To pity the commoners is a waste of national power. In the end, you’ll only be hindered and stagnate!”

“You speak of the great truth well, but you got rid of high-virtue individuals like Sect Master Qi. Among those sacrificed to Luojiu, weren’t there any ‘worthy’ people? In my opinion, it’s just personal ambition to leave a legacy.”

Yin Ci tasted the blood from his lips, the laughter in his voice growing stronger.

“We all have personal desires; why pretend to be so—”

Yin Ci’s wound sprouted countless tiny roots, healing rapidly. He was like a black wind, attacking from the most unexpected angles. But while his swordsmanship was wild, he didn’t aim for Qu Duanyun’s life, seemingly enjoying toying with him.

“—high and mighty?” His sword and words fell simultaneously, making Qu Duanyun’s palms tingle.

“Personal desire?” Qu Duanyun’s veins popped on his forehead, and he swung his sword again. “For personal desire, I would not have acted against my beloved teacher! It’s just that the Sect Master was too indecisive and lacked the heart to kill. For a great cause, even if I must die, I will accept it gladly…”

As a result, before he could finish his words, the madness on Yin Ci’s face disappeared in an instant.

“Hmm, quite tragic.” He jumped back several feet, kicking aside the severed limbs and legs near his feet. “Everyone, did you hear that? This man has just admitted to the matter of the demon tree.”

Qu Duanyun’s mind went blank for a moment.

Who was he talking to?

There were no signs of anyone nearby, and he had been specifically checking. Yin Ci’s madness didn’t seem feigned just now. Who were these people…

“Well done, Zizhu.”

A figure suddenly dashed out, rushing straight towards Yin Ci. The man was tall and slender, moving like the wind, with a bright smile on his face. By the time he reached Yin Ci, he even leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.

It was Shi Jingzhi, the very person who was supposedly “maimed”!

What was even more shocking was that following him were several familiar faces—

Monk Juehui, with his hands clasped together, looked even more distressed than before. Shi Zhongyu looked either too angry or too shocked to show any emotion; her face was pale and expressionless. Hua Jingchun was hissing from the cold, and the remaining person, who looked like a member of the Yueshui Pavilion, seemed as if his eyes were about to pop out.

All these people were masters at hiding their auras. Even so, their wrists were adorned with expensive artifacts that helped them hide it.

It was a trap.

…The news about the Hanging Tree could be ignored; the stranger it seemed, the easier it would be to cover up. However, the sin of disrupting the martial world at this crucial moment couldn’t be exposed.

This was troublesome now. They needed to eliminate all witnesses.
