Chapter 58

The entire venue was shocked. “What?!”

Whether it was the exam takers, the instructors, or the students who had come to watch, everyone seemed to be in a temporary state of stupor. Compared to the thunderous applause when Ling Xiao finished, Ying Feng calmly walked out of the examination arena in complete silence.

Not a single person cheered for him, including those who should’ve been closest to him.

It took a while before the instructor in charge of the exam regained his composure. “How… How is that possible? Using mental energy for direct attack—wasn’t that ancient method of combat phased out long ago?”

A long time ago, the people of Tianxiu did indeed combine their mental energy with their naturally superior physical abilities to fight. In that era, they wrought devastating damage that made enemies tremble in fear.

However, since the advent of soul crystals, the utilization of mental energy reached its pinnacle, and no one directly used it for attack anymore. If it could be said that a bit of mental energy was used to inflict a certain amount of damage, with the aid of a soul crystal, that damage could be amplified fivefold.

Due to its poor cost-effectiveness, people nowadays, even if they knew of this method, wouldn’t use it. Furthermore, it had long been removed from the curriculum, with many senior students unable to grasp it.

But it was undeniable that without soul crystals, nothing was more effective than a direct mental attack. This candidate from Bikong had caught the instructors’ attention on the open day with his teleportation, showcasing a mental ability beyond his peers. It turned out that his performance that day was far from his limit.

One instructor incredulously flipped through his file. Clearly written, just a month ago, he was still in his fledgling state, having received only ten years of primary education. Many of those present today, whether they were eleventh, twelfth graders, or even repeaters, couldn’t independently defeat an SS-level creature. Yet, this tenth-grader not only defeated it but did so instantly.

“8 seconds 13—could this be a record in the history of Royal Sky Academy?” An instructor murmured to himself.

“That includes the time the bear took to run over,” another instructor helpfully reminded.

“Using such a primitive method, could he really be someone who time-traveled from the ancient past?”

“If it was him, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

The instructors turned their heads and saw Major General Fu Yao, who had just returned from a mission.

“Sir? You’re back?”

Originally alerted by an emergency that unidentified flying objects were found in nearby space, it was later confirmed to be a spaceship of interstellar pirates that had gone off course due to a failed jump. Fuyao was ordered to eliminate them.

Without even returning after finishing the fight, he was again commanded to head to a nearby mining star to eliminate invaders there, which took him half a month. This was his first time setting foot on his homeland since then, and he rushed over to watch Ying Feng’s entrance examination.

As someone who had seen Ying Feng’s detailed military medical report, Fu Yao wasn’t surprised by his performance. He had expected Ying Feng to come into contact with his mental powers early but didn’t expect him to advance it so much in such a short time.

“How much mental energy do you think is required to instantly kill a creature of SS-level?” Fuyao asked.

The instructors exchanged glances. “Without relying on soul crystals, at least 70 points?”

“Exactly, but don’t forget, in life-threatening situations, one can unleash double their mental energy.”

The reason Ying Feng stood still was for that split second when his life was on the line. A moment too early, and he wouldn’t have been able to fully harness his power; a moment too late, and he would’ve been crushed. What Ying Feng possessed was not only exceptional mental power but also unparalleled focus, reaction, will, and bravery.

“Assuming his current mental power cap is 35, which is what ordinary students achieve after three months at the military academy, how much do you think he will achieve in three months given his learning ability?”

The instructor swallowed hard. “Reaching the peak shouldn’t be a problem… right?”

Fu Yao didn’t deny his estimate. “I’ve seen the data reports for the two of them. The current question is hardly a challenge for them. However, the next one could be problematic.”

“You’re kidding, right? The next question is practically a giveaway. It’s rare for candidates to fail it in past exams,” an instructor expressed disbelief.

“Let’s wait and see,” Fu Yao confidently replied.

From the time Ying Feng came out, many people had been sneaking glances at him. For his peers, his combat strength was beyond terrifying. Facing such a disproportionately powerful opponent didn’t ignite the fighting spirit but rather invoked respect and distance.

Ever since the green light lit up, Ling Xiao’s brows hadn’t relaxed. As a Qizi, he should have been the first to congratulate Ying Feng after his match. Yet, until this moment, his lips remained tightly pressed together. Surpassing Ying Feng had been his biggest goal for the past decade. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, this goal turned into trying to catch up. Only today did he realize how terrifyingly advanced Ying Feng had become in areas he couldn’t see. The gap between them might never close.

Because of Ling Xiao’s unusual reaction, Bing Can swallowed the words of congratulations he was about to say. Red Head, not understanding, kept asking, “Why aren’t you happy? Celebrating such a formidable ally, not an enemy, is worth cheering a hundred times over. Besides, the one who defeated the bear in eight seconds was none other than your Qizhu. You should feel proud. If it were me, I would have rushed over immediately.”

Ling Xiao gave him a disdainful glance. “It’s your turn to go up. You’ll get your chance to leap into action.”

Red Head heard the instructor call his name. He took the stage, his red hair standing out starkly against the vast, snowy plains. His fighting style primarily relied on overpowering strength. While it might not have the aesthetic appeal of Ling Xiao’s, it was very practical. Ling Xiao initially thought he was all talk and noticed his fawning attitude towards his Qizhu. After watching him fight, he realized Red Head’s strength wasn’t to be underestimated.

At 14:50, Red Head took down his polar bear, becoming the second person to defeat an S-level opponent.

A strong Qizi indicated a strong Qizhu. As expected, Bing Can’s performance that followed was eye-opening for everyone. Unlike Red Head, he excelled at long-range combat. The snowflakes he lifted, and the sharp icicles all became his tools in battle. With his ghostly movements and elegant actions, Ling Xiao saw for the first time someone who could interpret fighting so gracefully. Given enough time, defeating the opponent seemed a given.

The instructors nodded in agreement. Facing an SS-level creature was much harder for a Qizhu of their age than challenging an S-level creature for the Qizi. Therefore, they usually grade the candidates based on their performance within fifteen minutes. This one’s performance was already quite outstanding. Perhaps in previous years, he could have scored the highest. However, this year, a monster emerged, unsurpassed by anyone.

After watching an exciting match, Ling Xiao seemed to have snapped out of his previous despondency.

He nudged Red Head. “Didn’t you want to rush over?”

Red Head actually did, and Ling Xiao could almost imagine a wagging tail behind him. More than their skills, he envied their bond. After observing their interactions, Ling Xiao suddenly felt a gaze on him. Turning, he met Ying Feng’s eyes.

“Besides, the one who defeated the bear in eight seconds was none other than your Qizhu. You should feel proud.”

Red Head’s words echoed in his ears.

Proud… What does that feel like?

Ah, the brilliant figure on the stage is my Qizhu. The urge to let the whole world know might just be pride.

The prolonged eye contact made Ling Xiao feel a bit uncomfortable.

“What are you looking at?” he asked.

Hopefully, it’s not because he didn’t greet him happily like Red Head did or the other Qizis.

“Even if you look at me, I won’t rush over to you.”

After all, wouldn’t it be strange if I did? I’d probably get pushed back, right?

Without a word, Ying Feng turned his head as if nothing had happened.

‘What was that about?’ Ling Xiao wondered.

After the morning’s trials in the five arenas, the first round of tests was over. Their major only accepted fifteen pairs, or thirty students. Therefore, nearly half of the candidates were deemed unsatisfactory. But that didn’t mean they failed. As long as they passed two out of the three tests, they could enter the final manual selection process. Of course, that was up to the internal discussions of the academy.

During lunchtime, Red Head enthusiastically invited Ling Xiao for a meal.

“We’ll be classmates soon. Let’s have lunch together!”

The underlying meaning was that both their admissions were certain.

Having watched the morning’s matches, Ling Xiao too felt the urge to get to know the other side better.

“Sure, we have a car. Let’s take ours.”

“Did you all buy a car?” Red Head exclaimed in surprise. “We came on the academy’s flying vehicle this morning. Our savings can only afford a single seater. My Qizhu said we should wait a little longer.”

“Isn’t it because you haven’t saved a dime in twelve years?” Bing Can stepped forward, candidly exposing him.

Ling Xiao and Ying Feng exchanged glances, finding the situation all too familiar.

Hold on!

“But I earned the money for the car all by myself!” Ling Xiao proclaimed with pride.

“You’re right,” Ying Feng conceded without objection.

The four of them reached the academy’s entrance. Ling Xiao took out the car key and pressed it. A sleek Flying Shark transformed from its compact standby mode to a sports car in the distance. The whole process took only two seconds.

Red Head was flabbergasted. “This-this-this-this is your car?”

Ling Xiao tried to mimic Ying Feng’s calm and poised demeanor, but he couldn’t pull it off with the same natural flair.

“Wealthy friends!” Red Head exclaimed, excitedly hugging Ling Xiao’s leg. Ying Feng’s forehead twitched. He grabbed him by the collar and tossed him to Bing Can. Bing Can caught him smoothly. Though he was surprised, he was far more composed than Red Head.

“Your car is impressive. I’m quite envious,” Bing Can complimented.

Ling Xiao confidently sat in the driver’s seat. “Get in.”

Red Head tried to climb into the passenger seat but was pulled down by Bing Can and shoved into the back. The car was originally bought to provide a place for Ling Xiao to lie down after blood extraction. It was spacious, with ample room for all four.

They found a nearby restaurant. As they became more familiar, the conversation flowed more freely. At one point, Bing Can voiced a question he’d been pondering for half a month.

“After your coming-of-age ceremony, were you two ever forced to separate?”

Ling Xiao was puzzled by the sudden question. “No, why?”

“When I examined you last time,” Bing Can began, “I found that besides significant blood loss, you had mild mental trauma. This is usually due to insufficient rest during unstable or critical periods. You guys…”

As he spoke, he noticed the odd expressions on their faces, realizing he may have overstepped.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to pry,” he apologized.

“Haha, it’s fine,” Ling Xiao said, trying to sound upbeat. “We had a small conflict back then, but it’s all in the past now.”

As he said this, Bing Can discreetly observed Ying Feng’s reaction. He noticed Ying Feng subtly glancing at Ling Xiao. Considering Ying Feng’s earlier departure without Ling Xiao showing any emotion, Bing Can suspected that the “past” Ling Xiao mentioned might not truly be behind them.

There were too many mysteries surrounding these two—mental trauma, severe blood loss, inability to take medications, immense mental powers, and a luxurious vehicle. There must be a complex story hidden in their past.

“I was being presumptuous,” he said, trying to steer the conversation away from that topic. This was probably the only hiccup during their lunch. After the meal, they exchanged contact information, tacitly acknowledging each other as future classmates.

In the afternoon, the examination resumed. As per the rules, candidates who hadn’t finished couldn’t observe the exam content or receive hints from anyone.

After waiting for a while, it was finally Ling Xiao and Ying Feng’s turn. They were ushered into separate booths, where they found only a chair and a multi-functional eye mask. Upon seeing the mask, Ling Xiao understood that the second test involved virtual combat.

He put on the mask and found himself in an open field, facing a ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex.

This opponent is tough. That was Ling Xiao’s initial thought. Nonetheless, he fearlessly launched his attack, as he always did.

Elsewhere, Ying Feng faced a human-sized monkey, which immediately charged at him. Having recently depleted all his mental power and given that it wouldn’t help in a virtual battle, he relied solely on physical prowess to fight.

Ling Xiao’s opponent proved more formidable than expected, managing to throw him off multiple times. Despite Ling Xiao’s various evasive maneuvers, the T-Rex stood firm, not moving an inch, its unwavering presence reminding him of someone.

Ying Feng was quickly getting annoyed by this monkey. It darted from the east to the west, never staying still. He really wanted to grab it, pin it to the ground, and give it a good beating. Its lively and restless behavior reminded him of someone.

Above the field, ten stars lit up. With time, one would fade out periodically. Ling Xiao instinctively assumed that this was a timer.

The students who had already taken their exams watched this battle through the holographic projection screen, and they were deeply entertained by the exciting match.

However, the instructors in the examination seat couldn’t help but shake their heads, sighing long and short breaths. How could these candidates, unanimously seen as top seeds by everyone, perform this way?

Time was running out. Ying Feng finally saw an opportunity. With impeccable accuracy, he grabbed the monkey by the neck and forcefully pinned it to the ground, placing one knee on its belly to keep it down before it could resist.

Despite it being a virtual battle, the Tyrannosaurus rex’s massive stomp still made Ling Xiao feel as though all his organs were being crushed.

Ling Xiao’s neck was tightly squeezed. The grip was getting tighter, making it hard for him to breathe.

Oxygen was dwindling, and his consciousness was fading. He couldn’t believe he was going to lose here. Now, it wasn’t about victory or defeat; it was a matter of life and death.

He was going to die here, under the hands of the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Wait! His detached consciousness was forcibly pulled back a bit. The T-rex had such short arms; how could it simultaneously stomp on his stomach and strangle his neck? Was this some kind of joke?

He tried to call for a stop but couldn’t utter a word. Why did this damn virtual battle game have to be so realistic?

Just as Ling Xiao was about to give up, the force choking him suddenly stopped. In his daze, he saw the Tyrannosaurus rex open its mouth. “…Ling…Xiao?”

After a puff of smoke, both returned to their original states. Ling Xiao lay on the ground, almost breathless, while Ying Feng’s knee was pressed against his abdomen, his right hand still tightly gripping Ling Xiao’s throat.

The stars above stopped fading, with only three left. An irritating voice rang out. Both turned their heads to see a red light above.

For the second round of the entrance exam, Ling Xiao and Yin Feng had failed.

Chapter 57

Ever since Ying Feng discovered Ling Xiao’s embarrassing “secret”, teasing Ling Xiao became one of his few pleasures. Every time Ying Feng wanted to indulge this hobby, he was met with fierce resistance from Ling Xiao.

Unfortunately for Ling Xiao, he was no match for Ying Feng in any aspect. Once his defenses were breached, Ling Xiao’s resistance dwindled to almost nothing. His attempts to push Ying Feng away soon turned into desperately holding onto him.

Being caressed by his Qizhu was an incredibly comforting sensation. It felt like gentle jolts of electricity running through his body. In no time at all, Ling Xiao would roll into Ying Feng’s embrace, making soft groans.

After enjoying the smooth sensation of Ling Xiao’s skin and the gratifying feeling of having a typically strong-willed person cuddling against him, Ying Feng pulled back and said, “Stop wasting time. Today is the entrance exam day for Royal Sky Academy.”

Jolted from his blissful state, Ling Xiao sat up with indignation. Who was wasting time? His lower half was still excited!

It turned out they could have dallied a bit longer. When they arrived at Royal Sky on their high-speed Flying Shark, several academy planes hadn’t arrived yet. It took about ten more minutes for all the candidates to gather.

As expected, the pair from Lion Hope Academy was in the same examination room. The redhead, upon seeing Ling Xiao, exclaimed excitedly, “Wow, you can really stand up? Did you see the Flying Shark parked outside the school gate when you came? It’s so cool!”

Ling Xiao: “…”

The first day of exams were all written tests: social sciences, followed by a combination of biology and chemistry, then astronomy and geography in the afternoon, and history was the last. Having crammed intensively, Ling Xiao found most subjects fairly manageable. As the social sciences test was distributed, his first instinct was to look at the final essay question:

—As times progress and technology advances, is there still a need for the Seventh Law? Please express your views and elaborate in detail.

Ling Xiao was taken aback. The Seventh Law of Tianxiu prohibited the development of any intelligent AI. Established since the start of the new era, it was unique as it carried the founder’s personal endorsement: “Never to be abolished”.

Over recent years, there had been debate over this law. Some scientists believed that after thousands of years of civilization advancement, many planets had progressed significantly thanks to AI, yet their own civilization was held back by this ancient law.

Previously, Ling Xiao would have sided with those advocating for its repeal. But after certain events turned his worldview upside down, he finally grasped the true meaning of the Seventh Law. It wasn’t about being behind; it was about being far ahead. They forbade the creation of intelligent AI because they themselves were robots.

As he pondered the question, Ying Feng’s voice suddenly resounded in his mind, startling him.

Don’t write nonsense.

Ying Feng sat diagonally behind him. Knowing Ying Feng probably saw the last question too, he suspected that Ying Feng specifically warned him out of concern that he might write something careless. However, Ling Xiao couldn’t turn around, nor did he have the ability to communicate back mentally. So, he quickly grabbed a scrap of paper and wrote in big letters, “I know”, followed by several dramatic exclamation marks, hoping Ying Feng would notice.

Only then did Ying Feng retract his mental gaze and start to focus on his own test.

The exam schedule was packed, and soon they were taking the final subject: history. For Ying Feng, the history questions were a breeze. He finished his paper early, pretending to be deep in thought. Then, with a mental shift, he directed his attention over Ling Xiao.

He first observed the two proctors at the scene, who showed no particular reactions. However, he noticed a monitor located diagonally above in the corner of the room subtly rotating to focus on Ling Xiao’s seat, which made Ying Feng tense up momentarily.

But a moment later, the monitor resumed its usual motion, as if the brief redirection was just a coincidence.

Ying Feng relaxed and quickly scanned through Ling Xiao’s exam paper. He was surprised to find that after just over half a month of intense studying, Ling Xiao managed to get answers worth more than sixty points correct. Even without Ying Feng’s help, he could pass.

As Ling Xiao was deeply pondering over a question he had studied but couldn’t recall, he suddenly heard Ying Feng whisper in his ear:

Idiot, how could you get such an easy question as 14 wrong?

Not again! Frustrated, Ling Xiao quickly grabbed a scrap of paper and wrote below the big words “I know”.

Why don’t you use your psychic powers to say something useful for once!

Ying Feng stopped the banter and helped Ling Xiao correct a few mistakes, then filled in the questions that Ling Xiao couldn’t answer. Only after making sure there were no errors did he discreetly withdraw his consciousness.

Through the recent practice, he had gained a more tangible understanding of his mental power and gradually detected the lower limit of his energy, avoiding the previous situation where he ran out of energy halfway through a sentence. After guiding Ling Xiao through the exam, he still had some energy left. As time went by, the consumed mental power would automatically recover.

“Will I get a perfect score? I’ve never scored full marks in history!”

As soon as the papers were handed in, Ling Xiao rushed over to ask.

Ying Feng didn’t want to inflate his ego and simply said, “We’ll see.”

Ling Xiao’s bright smile instantly faded. “You don’t mean you don’t even know the correct answers, do you?”

“Who knows.” Ying Feng turned and walked away.

“Hey! Aren’t you being too irresponsible?” Ling Xiao jogged to catch up.

The two proctors left in the classroom exchanged knowing glances.

“It seems like we have another duo using mental communication to cheat this year.”

“Yeah, it’s been two years since we last had such a pair. Kind of nostalgic.”

“If this were any other department, they’d be disqualified.”

“But who said we are in the Joint Combat Department?” He emphasized the word ‘joint’ especially.

……

The next day, the practical test finally arrived. After announcing that there were three questions in total, the first, unsurprisingly, was about individual combat ability.

The so-called examination ground was a sealed virtual space. Initially empty, it would simulate environments based on the terrains chosen by the examinees. The opponents would also be lifelike creatures of their respective environments.

With many examinees, there were five such virtual spaces. While Ying Feng was analyzing the pros and cons of each terrain, Ling Xiao hastily selected the jungle. Ying Feng didn’t even get a chance to stop him.

“You…”

“What’s wrong? Isn’t this a good choice?” Ling Xiao didn’t overthink; he simply liked the terrain.

The jungle was probably a terrain many would avoid. Numerous obstacles, limited visibility, and opponents within jungles tend to be agile and adept at maneuver warfare, making it challenging to gain the upper hand.

Once chosen, the terrain couldn’t be changed. Ying Feng had no choice but to accept this fact. Soon, everyone’s choices were revealed. Most students opted for the desert, which had a broad field of view and almost no obstacles. Bing Can and his partner chose the tundra. The number of students who chose the jungle wasn’t the lowest; there was a pair that chose the swamp, suggesting that it might be the least favored terrain.

Most examinees were at an awkward stage where they had just reached adulthood but weren’t fully matured. Opponents one level below posed no challenge, while those a level above were overly challenging.

Considering this, the opponents for the Qizhu and the Qizi were set at SS and S levels respectively. There was no need to defeat the opponent completely. Surviving for 15 minutes was considered passing.

Ling Xiao’s turn came up quickly. A few sharp-eyed students recognized him.

“Isn’t he the student who came in a wheelchair on the open day?”

“The one who was targeted as the weakest link and was nearly toppled by a monster?”

“Right! He’s allowed to take the exam?”

Ling Xiao, already in the examination space, couldn’t hear these comments, but Ying Feng outside did. Bing Can, suppressing his laughter, comforted Ying Feng. “Don’t mind them. But I’m also looking forward to seeing how Ling Xiao will surprise us.”

Ying Feng, being the only one who truly knew Ling Xiao’s strength, didn’t need the comfort. After watching the performances of the previous examinees, none of whom could decisively beat their opponents, he had full confidence in Ling Xiao.

Plus, the jungle terrain was where Ling Xiao excelled—it was like letting a monkey return to the mountains.

As expected, when the test began, Ling Xiao reset everyone’s expectations. The audience watched in awe as this seemingly feeble young man nimbly leaped from branch to branch, leaving the pursuing primate beast unable to even touch the hem of his clothing. It almost seemed as if Ling Xiao was the true master of this domain.

The primate beast, in terms of strength, defense, and health, was average among creatures of its level. However, its agility was unparalleled, and it had two incredibly powerful skills.

Sure enough, the primate beast, unable to catch up with Ling Xiao, used its signature ability—teleportation. The beast, which had been right behind Ling Xiao, suddenly disappeared, only to appear in front of him a second later, extending its claw to scratch. Given Ling Xiao’s fast-forward speed, this attack seemed inevitable.

A gasp arose from the audience. At that moment, Ling Xiao suddenly dove diagonally downward. The onlookers couldn’t even spot his anchor point before he dropped more than a meter, effortlessly dodging the attack. But it didn’t end there. As Ling Xiao was falling, he suddenly soared upward, releasing something from his hand—a vine that he used to control his flight altitude.

Mid-air, Ling Xiao ruthlessly kicked the primate beast into a tree, followed by a series of attacks. His strategy was clear and correct: to find a weak point against agile creatures and relentlessly attack it.

Before the beast could recover, it desperately teleported again. Everyone clearly saw Ling Xiao punching the air, missing the beast, which had teleported behind him. Just as everyone thought he couldn’t dodge this time, Ling Xiao once again amazed the audience.

Mid-air, without any external aid, he performed a backflip, both feet landing successively on the beast’s head. His extraordinary ability to stay in the air and his mid-air reactions made people wonder if he had wings.

The beast, which was kicked to the ground, saw its health drop below 10%, activating its berserk mode—its second formidable skill—which dramatically increased its agility, causing massive damage upon contact. At this stage, no opponent dared face it head-on unless they had a ranged attack; the only strategy was to flee. Ling Xiao and the beast embarked on a one-on-one chase in the dense jungle, the berserk primate beast now even faster than the Mushroom Guardian they encountered by the lake days before. But Ying Feng wasn’t worried; after all, that day Ling Xiao had used only one hand to flee. Now with both hands free, it seemed nothing in nature could catch him.

What followed was a spectacular chase. Unlike usual chases where the protagonist was the pursuer, the highlight now was seeing the protagonist escape. Countless times, Ling Xiao narrowly avoided being hurt by the beast. His mid-air turns, stops, and sprints were so swift and confusing that while the Qizhus could keep up, their Qizis simply enjoyed it as if watching a fantasy movie.

After a full two minutes of berserk mode, the beast hadn’t even touched Ling Xiao. Just as the berserk mode ended, while they were both still mid-air, Ling Xiao suddenly disappeared, and before anyone could react, a shadow appeared behind the primate beast.

“Teleportation!” someone exclaimed. “How could he have teleportation like the primate beast?!”

“He didn’t use teleportation.” Ling Xiao’s move was so fast that even many Qizhus couldn’t see it clearly. But with so many experts present, some were able to catch it. “He used the force from two trees in succession to spring behind the primate beast. Because of his incredible speed, it looked as if it happened in an instant.”

Everyone nodded in realization. Ling Xiao, who had reappeared behind the primate beast, delivered a fatal blow. The poor creature was sent rolling countless times until it crashed into the simulation arena’s glass barrier.

“Buzz—” The green light came on, and the time stopped at 12’36”54. The first person to defeat his opponent within the set time today was someone who, just two weeks ago, was immobilized. After a momentary silence, the venue erupted in applause.

Even the instructors in the examiners’ area couldn’t help but clap. “It seems we underestimated them that day. With their capabilities, they’ll definitely get into our department.”

“Yes,” another instructor agreed. “So agile yet reluctant to walk, it’s not weakness but laziness. We need to motivate them more.”

“So impressive!” Red Head, upon seeing Ling Xiao, was so excited he wanted to hug him but was pushed aside. The one who pushed him, without looking back, walked into the competition field.

“Is your Qizhu always so cool?” Red Head concluded.

Ling Xiao wiped his sweat and joined Red Head, awaiting Ying Feng’s match. After his astonishing performance, everyone was curious: who was this person who defeated Ling Xiao in the coming-of-age ceremony?

As Ying Feng walked into the arena, he had already discreetly concentrated his mental energy into the palm of his right hand. He was different from Ling Xiao; the jungle wasn’t his advantage. Therefore, this battle had to be quick.

During his mental training, Ying Feng vaguely grasped a method to transform his mental energy into attack power. He had never tried it before, so this match was a gamble.

He focused intently, gathering his energy. Directly in front of him, his opponent appeared: a massive bear. This kind of bear, in terms of both attack and defense, was terrifying, even ranking within the top ten of SS-level creatures.

The bear roared and charged towards Ying Feng at a speed that seemed incongruous with its heavy body. Yet, Ying Feng stood still, showing no intent to dodge.

“What is he doing? He’s going to be blown away!” someone exclaimed in anxiety. Even the instructors felt something was amiss. The charging force of this kind of bear was exceptionally strong. Taking it head-on would undoubtedly result in severe injuries.

“Why are you just standing there? Run!” This time, it was Red Head who couldn’t contain himself and shouted. But by the time he finished speaking, the bear was already right in front of Ying Feng.

In that split second, Ying Feng suddenly leaped straight up, nimbly flipping over the black bear. As he descended, his right hand was placed on top of the bear’s head, followed by a forceful thrust.

No one could clearly see what exactly happened on the field. All they saw was the bear shuddering before collapsing limply to the ground. A green light illuminated the arena, indicating the end of the match.

0’08”13.

Chapter 56

Just now, when Ling Xiao was in danger, among the people who intended to help, the red-haired from the duo was one of them. Now that the danger had passed, some people retreated, but these two approached once more.

“If I’m not mistaken, did you just use teleportation? Impressive. I can’t do that at all.”

“Teleportation?” Ling Xiao heard a new term. “Did you acquire a new skill? Is it difficult?”

“Teleportation demands both emotional and mental strength. My instructor said that our emotional strength is sufficient, but my mental strength hasn’t reached the required level, so I can’t activate it.”

Ling Xiao glanced at Ying Feng and thought to himself, if he could blow a paper ball into the sky, even if he couldn’t do it before, it definitely wasn’t due to a lack of mental strength…

The other continued questioning Ying Feng, “With such personal abilities, you must be aiming for the Combat Command Department?”

It was recognized as the most challenging solo examination, and only the best Qizhu would dare to apply.

“No,” Ying Feng denied. “We are applying for the Joint Combat Department.”

The two from Lion Hope looked at Ling Xiao with disbelief evident in their eyes, reflecting their inner turmoil. Ling Xiao, who had just been targeted as the weakest link by the monster, didn’t know how to explain, and could only smile awkwardly.

Fortunately, the Qizhu reacted quickly. “Right, he’s just lost some blood. Once he recovers, he should be fine. A Qizhu is stronger when the Qizi is powerful, so both of you must be exceptional. I’m looking forward to being classmates with you.” He extended his hand politely. “My name is Bing Can, and this is my Qizi Qian Si. Nice to meet you.”

The red-haired Qian Si said to Ling Xiao, “I didn’t expect you to have the skills to apply for the Joint Combat Department. See you in the examination!”

After exchanging names, Bing Can left with Qian Si. In the future, their competitors wouldn’t be the companions from Bikong but elite students from various junior academies. Just like Qian Si, Ling Xiao was also eagerly awaiting the Royal Sky Entrance Exam.

While some were looking to the future, others had no future left. In a dormitory of the 10th grade in Bikong, Zhen He experienced the worst nightmare of his 22 years of life. Before him, the initiator of this nightmare was swiftly using his power to firmly control Zhen He.

The humiliation of his life was underestimating this person. He couldn’t run, couldn’t end his life, and certainly couldn’t attack the Qizhu. Zhu Yue completely severed his connection with the outside world; even the dormitory’s network equipment was destroyed.

Zhen He, who wished to consume him, could only stare at him in this way now. Even though Zhu Yue had complete control, such a gaze still scared him.

He bravely took a step forward, trying not to make his voice tremble. “I need ability and money. I want to make the people who look down on me pay, so I have to do this.”

As he did every day, he bit his thumb and wiped the blood on Zhen He’s lips. The anger in Zhen He’s eyes burned even more intensely.

Zhu Yue swallowed. “But now I still need greater ability. Putting you on top is the only way I can compensate you. When I fully mature, I’ll let you go.”

Zhen He stared at him with red eyes, then roared from the depths of his throat and pounced on him.

……

Two weeks later.

Ling Xiao, who groggily got up from the bed, opened the bathroom door without much thought. Just out of the shower and not even wrapped in a towel, Ying Feng calmly looked at the intruder, seemingly thinking it was an ordinary occurrence, and showed no intention of covering up. Instead, it was Ling Xiao who was startled awake, slamming the bathroom door shut with a bang.

Outside, once he came to his senses, Ling Xiao regretted his overreaction. After all, he had seen it all before, so what was there to be embarrassed about?

But opening the door to go back in now would just seem like he was trying too hard to cover his mistake. As he rued his behavior, he recalled the glimpse of Ying Feng’s matured body, which seemed somewhat different from his own.

He sneakily pulled at the corner of his pants, wondering why, after all this time, he still didn’t have a single hair down there.

“What are you doing?” Ying Feng’s voice suddenly emerged from behind, startling Ling Xiao enough for him to let go.

“Nothing!” He denied stubbornly.

Ying Feng frowned, clearly having seen Ling Xiao looking at his privates, yet he still denied it.

Seeing that Ying Feng had come out, Ling Xiao hurriedly rushed into the bathroom, slamming the door just as heavily as before.

‘What on earth…’ Ying Feng thought.

Today was the scheduled day for a physical examination, and also the most crucial day. The results of today’s exam would determine whether Ling Xiao could participate in the entrance examination for Royal Sky Academy in two days.

At the infirmary, it was business as usual. While Ling Xiao waited outside, Yao Tai was busy inputting some data into the computer. On seeing Ying Feng, she casually greeted him, “You’re here.”

“Mm,” was Ying Feng’s simple reply.

Yao Tai’s hands paused in their motion, and she looked up at Ying Feng in surprise. Such a gaze made Ying Feng feel puzzled.

“What’s wrong?” he asked again.

His voice was now deep, resonating like a church bell or the cello in a symphony, striking a chord deep within the listener. Standing up, Yao Tai realized she now had to look up to see the young man she used to look down upon.

“Let’s start by measuring your height.”

Holding Ying Feng’s examination results, Yao Tai was speechless for a moment, leading Ying Feng to think that there might be an issue with his report.

“Is there a problem?”

“No, there isn’t,” Yao Tai finally said, recovering from her surprise. “You’ve developed very well. One might say too well…” She couldn’t help but ask, “Can Ling Xiao’s body handle being like this?”

Ying Feng didn’t respond, either because he didn’t understand or pretended not to.

“Never mind.” Yao Tai waved the report in her hand. “Your medical checkup shows no problems. But don’t get too excited too soon. Whether you can advance in your studies primarily depends on Ling Xiao’s medical report. Please wait outside for a moment.”

Ling Xiao entered after Ying Feng, anxiously awaiting the verdict. Yao Tai knew what he was most concerned about and started with his psychological evaluation. “Congratulations, your psychological rating reached A-, barely meeting the minimum requirement for Royal Sky Academy.”

“Yay!” Ling Xiao excitedly jumped off the examination table.

Yao Tai was genuinely happy for him, as she initially thought he had no hope of reaching this point.

“Your physical development is also excellent. You’ve grown four centimeters in a month, which is a great progression.”

Feeling smug, Ling Xiao said, “I was already two centimeters taller than Ying Feng. Now I’ve grown another four. Doesn’t that mean I’m six centimeters taller than him now?”

Regrettably, Yao Tai informed him, “Ying Feng grew ten centimeters. He’s now a full 180 centimeters.”

Ling Xiao felt as if he had been struck by thunder. No wonder he always felt that Ying Feng had changed lately. However, seeing him every day, the change had been stretched out by time and wasn’t noticeable. He hadn’t realized that Ying Feng had grown taller than him.

For ten years, the only advantage he prided himself on, the aspect he was most smug about, had been completely crushed in just a month.

“Normally, a Qizhu grows faster than their Qizi.” Yao Tai observed his expression. “But you shouldn’t be discouraged. You still have room for growth.”

“Will I grow taller than Ying Feng?” Ling Xiao eagerly asked.

“Normally, both Qizhu and Qizi either develop simultaneously or not at all. While there have been instances where the Qizi is taller than the Qizhu, given your current growth rates,” Yao Tai tried to soften her voice, “It’s unlikely.”

Ling Xiao was immediately crestfallen and deeply saddened.

Yao Tai cleared her throat. “Even though you can’t surpass him in height, you should still be able to grow another five or six centimeters before you’re fully developed. That would be quite tall among Qizis.”

“Um…” Ling Xiao hesitated. “I have another question.”

“Go on.”

He looked uncertain. “Promise you won’t laugh.”

“I won’t,” Yao Tai assured him, adhering to the professional conduct of not mocking a patient’s privacy.

“Well…” Ling Xiao’s voice grew quieter, so quiet that Yao Tai could hardly hear him.

“What did you say? Speak up.”

“Why don’t I have…”

Yao Tai still couldn’t hear clearly. “Don’t have what?”

With a firm resolve, Ling Xiao voiced the embarrassing question he had. Yao Tai struggled to maintain a neutral face, doing her best to suppress a smirk, but Ling Xiao caught her.

“You promised not to laugh!”

“I’m sorry.” Yao Tai turned her head away briefly, then, having composed herself, faced him again, looking every bit the professional doctor.

“In theory, whether for a Qizhu or Qizi, as they start to mature, secondary sexual characteristics will change, including growing body hair.”

Ling Xiao became anxious. “Then why haven’t I?”

“If it hasn’t grown by now, there’s only one explanation: it’s subtly influenced by the personal preferences of the Qizhu. Ying Feng probably isn’t even aware of this. It’s the subconscious at play.”

Ling Xiao’s face turned numb. “So, you mean I won’t have it now or in the future…”

“You probably won’t grow any.”

Ying Feng watched as Yao Tai personally escorted Ling Xiao out of the room. Ling Xiao, who had entered lively and spirited, emerged looking like a lost soul.

“What happened? Did he not meet the required grade?”

“His psychological grade just reached an A. Congratulations, you both can apply to Royal Sky.”

Ying Feng glanced at Ling Xiao. “I can’t see that at all.”

“He’s just been hit hard in another way.”

Ying Feng couldn’t imagine anything that could devastate Ling Xiao like this. “In what way?”

Yao Tai gave him a meaningful look. “You’ll have to ask yourself.”

Confused, Ying Feng followed Ling Xiao back to their dormitory. Ling Xiao walked ahead, distraught and silent.

Once in their room, Ying Feng forcibly spun him around. “What’s going on?”

Ling Xiao finally glared back at him. “Being your Qizi is already miserable. How could you do this to me?”

Ying Feng was clueless. “What did I do to you?”

“Have you no humanity left?”

“What are you talking about?”

Ling Xiao didn’t want to discuss it. He climbed onto his bed, sulking.

Unsatisfied, Ying Feng wasn’t having it. “Explain yourself.”

There was no way Ling Xiao could voice such a humiliating matter. He frantically kicked with both legs, trying to push Ying Feng away, exclaiming, “Stop it!”

Ying Feng grabbed one of his ankles, attempting to restrain the other leg in the same manner. However, due to Ling Xiao’s intense struggle, Ying Feng inadvertently grabbed the hem of his pants, nearly pulling them down to his knees.

In a panic, Ling Xiao hurriedly yanked up his trousers, using both hands to cover himself.

Such an action only drew Ying Feng’s attention even more. Coupled with Ling Xiao’s behavior earlier in the day, it seemed Ying Feng was getting close to understanding the core of the issue.

He pinned down Ling Xiao’s legs and, without a word, attempted to pull off his trousers. Although the two had been candid with each other many times, such an action under the bright daylight was unprecedented. Ling Xiao’s face turned beet red with embarrassment, and he resisted with all his might. But he couldn’t match Ying Feng’s strength, who managed to yank his trousers down. Ling Xiao, who had been exposed so many times before, felt the sting of humiliation even more sharply this time. Previously unnoticeable details were now glaringly apparent.

Taking advantage of Ying Feng’s momentary shock, Ling Xiao mustered all his strength to push him away, quickly getting up to pull up his trousers, deeply mortified.

“You’re stronger than me, taller than me, and have what I don’t. Are you satisfied now?”

Ying Feng looked down, deep in thought, but that didn’t make Ling Xiao feel any better.

“Feeling guilty now? It’s too late! Dr. Yao said this is how I’ll be for the rest of my life!”

Ying Feng looked even more dejected, raising a fist to his mouth as if to stifle a sob or laughter.

“Regret won’t help now! Crying won’t help! You owe me so much; you can never repay it in this lifetime! …Wait, you aren’t laughing, are you?”

He was stunned. In the ten years they had known each other, it was the first time he saw Ying Feng smile. The change in his expression was so subtle that unless someone was extremely familiar with him, they wouldn’t notice.

Yet to Ling Xiao, who knew Ying Feng better than anyone, the smile was evident. The corners of his eyes, the tips of his eyebrows, and even his mouth, hidden by his clenched fist—all were smiling. The warmth this added to the ordinarily cold Ying Feng was palpable.

Ling Xiao never imagined that the first time he would see Ying Feng smile in a decade would be because of this. But this was absolutely not funny!

Ying Feng turned away, letting out a slight cough. Ling Xiao lost his cool instantly.

“I heard it! I heard you laughing! You’re actually mocking me! You’re mocking me for this?”

In a fit of rage, he hopped around on the bed, grabbed the only pillow within reach, and ferociously pounded Ying Feng’s back with it. For once, Ying Feng neither dodged nor stopped him, just letting Ling Xiao vent out his frustrations.

Meanwhile, the so-called “program” was anxiously making a determination: Was this an attack? Or flirting? Should it intervene or let it be? An attack? Flirting? An attack? Flirting?

Forget it, human emotions are too complicated. The system couldn’t make a correct judgment and decided to crash.

The author has something to say:

There are some details that I couldn’t fit into the story, so I’ll add them here.

The abilities of a Qizhu are controlled by two values: emotional value and mental power.

Spiritual Vision: mental power =>5, detect the position of the Qizi.

Mental Communication: mental power =>10, emotional value =>10.

Teleportation: mental power =>20, emotional value =>20.

Exchange life for life: emotional value = 100.

For a normally bonded couple, their initial emotional value is between 60-80. Primary academies don’t train mental power, so most Qizhu start with a mental power of 0, unable to activate their abilities.

Bing Can and Ling Xiao currently have a mental power of 10, enough to activate a level one soul crystal.

Ying Feng’s mental power is around 30. The instructor thinks he’s very powerful, mainly due to his high mental power, as it’s rare for couples to have an “insufficient emotional value”.

Regarding emotional levels: 10 is a nod and hello when meeting; 20 is a short chat on mutual interests; 30 considering the other as a friend worth keeping; 40 is inviting for a drink; 50 is budding romantic feelings; 60 is gathering courage to confess; 70 is being deeply in love; 80 is missing the other every single day; 90 is a willingness to commit for life; 100 is being willing to give one’s life for the other.

Congratulations to Ying Feng and Ling Xiao for advancing their relationship from a nod and hello to having short conversations. Keep it up!

Chapter 55

After some negotiations, the military still disagreed with Ying Feng’s direct request to go to the Gene Center. They had no choice but to land Flying Shark at the designated stopover, then the military aircraft would transport the two of them to the destination under complete secrecy, just like last time.

The two arrived at their destination.

This time, Long Yin didn’t make a personal appearance. They were met by a soldier who was very similar to the one they’d seen at the center the last time—the one Ling Xiao suspected to be a robot.

His cold expression made it clear he had no interest in conversing.

On the other hand, Heng He was as friendly as ever when he saw them. Ling Xiao thought he could understand; working every day with such lifeless colleagues must be utterly boring.

“Relax.” Heng He motioned for Ling Xiao to lie down. “The amount of blood drawn today will be more than last time. If you feel discomfort, let me know immediately.” He inserted a needle with a tube into Ling Xiao’s vein, tapped a few times on the equipment, and dark red blood began to flow out through the tube.

Watching his own blood being drained was torturous. To distract himself, Ling Xiao started chatting with Heng He.

“Does the person next to me have a name?”

“According to historical records, his name is Yue Ying, a member of the ancient royal family.”

“Royal family? He’s an ancient?”

“Yes.”

Ling Xiao turned his head in surprise. Apart from being immobile, the man looked as lifelike as anyone else, showing no sign that he was from thousands of years ago.

“Amazing, isn’t it? The Ancient Tianxiu had a highly advanced civilization. Some of their knowledge even surpassed modern times, like this human cryogenic technology that even modern science can’t achieve. Sadly, when a civilization reaches a certain height, it tends to self-destruct. Nobody can explain why, but this seems to be a universal truth across all planets.”

“No wonder you said you want to use him to unlock the core modification privileges. It’s probably a royal privilege, right?”

Ling Xiao then asked, “Can personal data also be modified this way?”

Heng He was puzzled. “What personal data?”

With Ying Feng absent, Ling Xiao whispered, “I think Ying Feng’s code has a bug. Can you help me modify it?”

“A bug?” This was a serious matter, and even Heng He looked concerned. “What bug?”

“He gets irrationally angry and uncontrollable when he can’t find me.”

Heng He couldn’t help but smile. “That’s not a bug; it’s a personality trait. You might have a misunderstanding about our system. We can only upgrade and repair at the population level. Individual data, like abilities, personalities, and appearances, are generated randomly. Even the main system doesn’t have permission to modify. If it was as you said, for some weaker individuals, we could manually adjust data to make them stronger. But reality isn’t that simple.”

“So that’s it.” Ling Xiao was slightly disappointed.

“What you described, when viewed positively, is interpreted as protectiveness, and negatively, as a controlling desire. Either way, it’s a characteristic of a Qizhu. Everyone who becomes a Qizhu exhibits it, though the degree varies from person to person.”

“Would being a Lone Star count as a bug?”

“You know about the Lone Star?” Heng He loved discussing scientific topics. “Simply put, if we are the upgraded version, then the Lone Star is the initial version created due to a system error. With such vast computations, errors are bound to occur once every few hundred years. The Lone Star, compared to us, is like someone who has had their emotional area formatted. Our predecessors tried to fix this problem but found no solution.”

“Formatted emotional area? That sounds a lot like Ying Feng. Are you sure he’s not a Lone Star that slipped through your net?”

Heng He laughed. “He’s way better than a Lone Star. Last time, after you had blood drawn, he looked upset. If he were a Lone Star, even if someone he spent ten years with died in front of him, he wouldn’t even frown.”

Ling Xiao’s voice grew softer. “Are they really that heartless?”

“Yes. A long time ago, before the prohibition on tracking soul reincarnations was issued, researchers did track the Lone Star and found that even after reincarnation, their emotional areas were still lacking. It takes at least three contract exchanges for them to recover like a normal person. Hence the saying, ‘When a Lone Star falls, they’re cold for three lifetimes.'”

After he had spoken for a while, he noticed that Ling Xiao hadn’t reacted. Upon closer inspection, due to excessive blood loss, Ling Xiao was in a semi-comatose state, possibly not having heard anything that was said.

Heng He turned to look at the amount of blood that had been drawn and sighed. This was just the transitional phase. According to the military’s orders, the amount of blood to be drawn a month later must reach two-thirds. If a Tianxiu person lost three-quarters of their blood, they would be in critical condition, and the two numbers were very close.

As soon as the blood reached the set amount, he immediately removed the needle. At this point, Ling Xiao looked pale, breathing weakly, and his overall condition was very poor.

Heng He called in Ying Feng with some trepidation. As expected, when Ying Feng entered, his expression was worse than before. He even glared at Heng He angrily. Even if it was redirected anger, Heng He felt very guilty inside.

“I will apply to my superiors to reduce the blood draw, even if it slows the progress. But you must allow him to recover on his own. Don’t use any medical methods. Any drug could leave residues in the body. The slightest toxicity can be fatal to the test subject.”

Ling Xiao, on the bed, groaned and struggled to open his eyes.

“Is it over?”

“Yes.” Heng He quickly approached. “Rest here for a while before you leave.”

Ling Xiao nodded weakly. No matter how tough he tried to act, he couldn’t get out of bed at the moment. He didn’t want to fall flat on the floor if he tried.

“By the way.” He spoke with a little more strength after a pause. “In two weeks, we’ll be taking the entrance exam for Royal Sky…”

“Royal Sky Military Academy?” Heng He exclaimed joyfully. “Impressive. I wish you success. You want me to avoid that timeframe, right?”

Ling Xiao nodded again.

“No problem,” he began, downloading the Royal Sky school calendar from the internet, then exclaimed, “Ah!”

“What happened?” Ling Xiao struggled to lift his head.

“Today is Royal Sky’s Open Day.”

The Royal Sky Military Academy adopted a fully enclosed management system. It had two open days each year, held on the eve of the entrance exams, to attract candidates and better promote the school culture.

“Ah,” Ling Xiao said eagerly, “I want to go…”

“You’re practically half-dead. Just go back and rest.” Ying Feng refused.

“Yes,” Heng He also advised. “You need rest now.”

“I feel much better. I’ll be fine after resting a while longer.” Ling Xiao didn’t want to miss this rare opportunity.

“No.” Ying Feng was adamant.

“I want to go!”

“I won’t allow it.”

Watching the two confront each other, Heng He regretted bringing it up.

Ling Xiao was frustrated. He realized that direct confrontations with Ying Feng always left him at a disadvantage. Even a beast, after running into a glass wall enough times, would learn to take a different path, let alone an intelligent human.

With that thought, Ling Xiao softened his tone slightly. “Please let me go.”

Given his current weak state, this hint of vulnerability was far more effective than any ordinary person’s plea. In Ying Feng’s eyes, it was almost as if Ling Xiao was saying, “This might be my last wish. Please fulfill it.”

As expected, Ying Feng hesitated, not immediately refusing.

Even Heng He was moved by Ling Xiao’s pitiful appearance. He took off a spatial button from his neck, pressed it, and out popped a stepping board attached to two large wheels and handlebars. Ling Xiao had seen these devices used for transportation at the base.

With another press, the device transformed into a wheeled chair, a thoughtful design for employees to sit and work anytime, anywhere.

“You can borrow this. Just return it next time.”

Ling Xiao’s spirits lifted, and with his primary concern addressed, Ying Feng relented.

“You can only go for two hours.”

“No problem!” Even an hour was fine with Ling Xiao.

After a brief dizzying journey, Ling Xiao transferred to the Flying Shark and arrived at Royal Sky. The shock of reality was even stronger than online. He insisted on walking through the gates, but after just a few steps, he collapsed. Ying Feng quickly pushed him onto the wheelchair in time.

Despite it being only a visit, Ling Xiao was as excited as if he were enrolling. He looked around eagerly, and if not for his physical condition, he might have wanted to run several laps around the campus.

Ying Feng pushed him to the joint combat department, where students had released many S-level simulated creatures and put on a training demonstration for visitors. Unlike the battle robots used by Ling Xiao and others, these creatures realistically mimic real-world beasts. They had a variety of attack moves and were more challenging to deal with.

Due to the spectacle of duo combat, many people had gathered here. Students wearing different primary school uniforms clustered together. Most of them were like Ling Xiao and Ying Feng: mature, but not fully grown, somewhere in between childhood and adulthood.

“Ah!” Suddenly, a redhead noticed them, pointing at Ling Xiao and exclaiming with exaggerated surprise. “So even Tianxiu has disabled people!”

Ling Xiao, realizing he was the subject of the comment, turned puzzledly to Ying Feng. “What does ‘disabled’ mean?”

Dissatisfied with the redhead’s attitude, Ying Feng was about to respond when another person slapped the redhead’s hand away. “Rude.”

Approaching them, Ling Xiao noticed both wore silver-white uniforms with “Lion Hope Academy” badges.

“You look pale,” the man observed, studying Ling Xiao closely. “Are you injured?”

He gripped a crystal in his hand for a moment, which disappeared, leaving a white glow in his palm.

Just as Ying Feng was secretly stunned that the man had mastered abilities taught in higher institutions, he gently placed his palm on Ling Xiao’s forehead. A moment later, he frowned in confusion.

“He’s lost at least half of his blood.” He stood straight and asked Ying Feng. “What happened?”

However, Ling Xiao was even more curious. He marveled at how the man could assess his condition so accurately. “How did you know?”

“My Qizhu is impressive, right?” The redhead popped up again. “He’s the only student in the primary academy who can activate the soul crystal!”

Suppressing his surprise, Ying Feng replied indifferently. “There was a minor incident earlier. He’s fine.”

“I can prescribe something to help him recover faster,” the man offered kindly.

“He can’t take medicines due to his current condition.” Ying Feng paused, then added, “Thank you for your kind offer.”

“That’s fine.” Seeing Ying Feng decline, the man didn’t insist. The redhead chimed in, “You both don’t seem like candidates here. Just visitors, right? We’re preparing to apply to this combined combat department and will soon be students at Royal Sky Academy!”

Ling Xiao’s mouth twitched. The thought of attending the same school as such a person seemed quite unappealing.

Thankfully, his Qizhu stepped in. “Quiet down. Speak less.”

The redhead, heeding his Qizhu’s advice, fell silent. The man then apologized. “Sorry for the disturbance. Please continue your tour.”

Ying Feng nodded, watching the two leave.

“He mentioned ‘Soul Crystal’ earlier? What’s that?” Ling Xiao, not wanting to be mocked for his ignorance, held back until now to ask.

“It’s probably referring to the crystal he had in his hand.”

“The skill activated using mental power, as mentioned by our instructor?” Ling Xiao was amazed at the talents outside Bikong. “I can only move paper balls now, but he’s mastered abilities I don’t have.”

Just as Ying Feng was about to reassure him not to worry, he looked down at Ling Xiao’s pale face. The sparkle in Ling Xiao’s eyes hadn’t dimmed in the slightest. Clearly, the excitement came from encountering a rival. Ying Feng suddenly felt that his concerns about Ling Xiao feeling inferior were somewhat unnecessary.

Though physically weak, Ling Xiao’s spirit was lively. He quickly felt parched, licking his lips for the third time within a minute. If he had an attentive partner, they would have offered him water by now. But clearly, the word “attentive” couldn’t be used to describe Ying Feng, and even referring to him as a “partner” was a stretch.

Unable to move on his own, Ling Xiao had no choice but to turn to Ying Feng for help. “I’m thirsty.”

Ying Feng looked around and spotted a vending machine in a corner. Thinking Ling Xiao would be fine staying put, he left him alone to buy some water.

Upon swiping his card, he reflexively went to select his usual drink but remembered that people in a weakened state shouldn’t consume cold beverages.

Which one should he pick then? This choice stumped Ying Feng.

Just as he was struggling to make a choice, a sudden cry of alarm came from behind him. When he turned around, he saw an S-level simulated creature pouncing fiercely towards Ling Xiao, who was immobile. The military academy students hadn’t anticipated such an event; by the time they thought of rushing to help, it was already too late. Ling Xiao, seated in the wheelchair, was about to be struck by the creature’s sharp claws.

Among the people present, those with quick reactions had already taken a step forward, ready to lend a hand. Some covered their mouths in shock. Just then, a figure—not rushing, not flying—just seemingly ‘refreshed’ right in front of Ling Xiao in full view of everyone, aimed at the S-level creature’s stomach, and kicked it fiercely twice.

After a backflip in the air, the figure landed steadily. The creature that was kicked flew straight towards two students from the junior academy. Seeing the creature flying towards them, they calmly executed a sleek set of moves. The poor little monster lay motionless on the ground.

“I’m so sorry.” A student from the Joint Operations Department ran over to apologize to Ling Xiao and his companion. “When this creature’s health drops to a certain level, it chooses the weakest target to break through and escape. It was our mistake not to stop it in time.”

Ling Xiao, the weakest one on the scene: “…”

“But how did you get here just now? I didn’t see clearly.” Ling Xiao asked Ying Feng. From his perspective, it seemed like Ying Feng had descended from the sky.

“It’s nothing,” Ying Feng nonchalantly replied, hopping over. “What do you want to drink?”

Not far away, two instructors from the Joint Operations Department who had been observing the situation nodded in approval after seeing everyone’s performance.

“That student from Lion Hope can already manipulate the soul crystal. It’s rare among junior academy students.”

“The two students from Chunyang are also good. Their moves are clean and efficient, without any hesitation.”

“But the one that left the biggest impression is from Bikong. To be able to instantly move to the location of his Qizi requires a certain level of emotional connection and mental strength of the Qizhu. It’s surprising that at such a young age, he can master such a difficult skill.”

“This year’s candidates are strong. The results are promising.”

Both instructors nodded in agreement.

After a while, one of them suddenly realized.

“But the Qizi from Bikong has difficulty even standing, right? They probably can’t apply for our department?”

The other showed a look of agreement.

Thinking that such a talented individual might not join them, both instructors fell into deep disappointment.

Chapter 54

There was a special training mission today. Early in the morning, the instructor arrived at the training ground to set up. Then he saw Ling Xiao and Ying Feng jogging. Ling Xiao was running far ahead, and when Ying Feng saw him, he stopped.

“You two are truly diligent,” the instructor expressed with surprise. “Didn’t I say you already exceeded the physical requirements for the entrance exams?”

“It was Ling Xiao’s request,” Ying Feng said, moving to the side and watching with the instructor as Ling Xiao ran on the track. After deciding to take the exam, Ling Xiao viewed the Qizhu as a future competitor and didn’t lower his standards just because he was the Qizi.

“He jogs every morning, practices his mental strength during the day, has practical training in the evening, and stays up late reading history books.” Almost every night, Ying Feng had to use some force to make him turn off the lights.

The instructor nodded in appreciation. “Ling Xiao is incredibly talented. It’s rare to see someone so naturally gifted yet also so hardworking. For many years, he has aimed to surpass you. Several times, I’ve seen him training alone deep into the night before an exam. And the next day, after the test, when he asks whose score was higher between the two of you, I often can’t bear to disappoint him. In any other batch, with his abilities, he would have stood out. But in this batch, he met you.”

Just as Ling Xiao finished a lap, he approached them. “What are you guys talking about?”

“Nothing.” The instructor quickly changed the subject. “Ying Feng mentioned you’ve been reading a lot. Studying history is not just about reading books. Visiting a historical museum can be very insightful.”

“Museum?” Ling Xiao’s eyes lit up. After days of intense reading, his view of history had changed. He no longer found it boring and had even developed an interest. Hearing about the museum, he looked at Ying Feng, his intentions clear on his face.

“Let’s go.” Ying Feng turned to leave, and Ling Xiao, after greeting the instructor, quickly followed. The instructor watched them go, feeling relieved. While it was regrettable that Ling Xiao couldn’t become the Qizhu, it seemed he had found a new direction.

The historical museum the instructor mentioned was not far from their place. In a short while, they arrived. The museum was open to the public with no admission fee.

It was organized by themes, not chronologically. Ling Xiao studied the map and decided to start with the military-political section on the top floor.

Upon reaching the top, he was immediately drawn to the statues lining the corridor. These statues, made by later generations, were of historical figures. Each had a glass display containing a dagger they once used, with their life stories engraved below.

After several days of intensive reading on history, Ling Xiao no longer drew a blank when looking at these historical figures; he recognized the very first one he saw.

“I know him. He’s the great marshal who overthrew the emperor and established the republic. The first year of the New Era refers to the year he founded the nation.”

Ying Feng gave a slight nod, acknowledging that Ling Xiao correctly stated basic historical knowledge.

Having received the “Ying Feng-style encouragement”, he enthusiastically continued talking about one figure after another. As he continued, he recognized fewer and fewer of them, and Ying Feng proceeded to explain each one to him.

After walking through the corridor and reviewing the history of their world, they reached the end, where several empty spots awaited future figures. Ling Xiao mused, “If my statue could be here one day, my life would be worth it.”

“We are constantly oscillating between sleep and awakening; how do you know you’re not among those ahead?”

This statement startled Ling Xiao. As he looked back, he felt that each figure seemed more vibrant and familiar. Any of them could have been from his era—they might be heroes he looked up to, or close companions, comrades, family he spent day and night with, or even himself. With this thought, it seemed as though the barriers of time no longer existed.

“You might be right. Maybe not just me, but you could also be here.” He scanned the statues and pointed at the founding marshal. “I think he looks a bit like you.”

Ying Feng silently diagnosed Ling Xiao with “face blindness“, a condition he read about in an extraterrestrial medical book. It seemed there was one more ailment their people could suffer from.

If Ling Xiao really had face blindness, his earlier comment about a first-year student resembling the Tianxiu ancient ancestor couldn’t be entirely trusted.

“Ah.” Ling Xiao suddenly pointed ahead. “Isn’t that Xing Lou?”

Following his direction, Ying Feng saw a man standing alone next to a display case in the center of the hall. Unlike the usual tourists who would lean in to inspect closely, this man was almost pressed up against the showcase, with his raised right hand lingering on the glass.

He looked down at the artifacts inside. Rather than looking like he was admiring, it was more like he was mourning. An indescribable emotion flowed in his eyes. Surely, one wouldn’t show such an expression for an inanimate object.

“Xing Lou!” Ling Xiao’s voice echoed prominently in the quiet, spacious museum. Like being shocked by electricity, Xing Lou’s hand jerked away, and he quickly took a step back from the display case. Recognizing the person who called his name, he showed a gentle, harmless smile. “Senior Ling Xiao.”

Ling Xiao didn’t notice Xing Lou’s unusual behavior earlier. Meeting an acquaintance here just felt serendipitous to him. “You’re here to visit too?”

Xing Lou replied, “The history teacher mentioned this place, so I was curious and came to take a look.”

After speaking, Xing Lou shifted his attention to the person next to Ling Xiao. Suddenly, Ling Xiao became nervous. If asked about Ying Feng, he wouldn’t be able to introduce him as his Qizhu like other Qizis could.

Fortunately, Xing Lou only glanced briefly and didn’t ask the potentially awkward question.

“Senior, I’ve finished this floor. Continue your tour; I’m heading downstairs.”

“Oh, alright.” Ling Xiao nodded, bidding him farewell.

As Xing Lou walked past Ying Feng, he unconsciously slowed down. Both slightly turned their heads, their gazes brushing over each other but quickly shifting away. As Xing Lou walked further away and Ying Feng didn’t turn back, their distance widened, with Ling Xiao watching for a moment.

“Was it, was it?” After Xing Lou was out of earshot, Ling Xiao urgently asked Ying Feng. “Doesn’t he look a lot like the male ancestor of the Tianxiu people?”

Ying Feng mentally upgraded Ling Xiao’s face-blindness by a notch. “How do they look alike at all?”

“Not alike?” Ling Xiao, puzzled, touched his chin. He felt they looked very similar, almost identical.

“Oh right, what was he looking at? He seemed so engrossed.” Ling Xiao went to examine the central display. The artifact inside was palm-sized, severely corroded from age, but faintly recognizable as a badge.

On one side of the display case, there is a 3D restoration projection of the artifact, allowing people to clearly see its original appearance. It has the outline of a hexagram with intricate patterns engraved in the center, the most prominent of which is a crown.

“This is the emblem of the ancient royal family,” Ling Xiao read the description. “Over four thousand years old, it is one of the oldest known artifacts, symbolizing the heir of the ancient royal family.”

After reading, he commented, “To have something from 4,000 years ago preserved so well indicates an advanced civilization back then.”

“Is he really a freshman?” Ying Feng suddenly asked.

“Of course, why do you ask?”

“His eyes don’t seem like a fledgling’s.”

“That’s because you haven’t seen him almost die from fright at the sight of a spider.” Ling Xiao chuckled, recalling that event. “But what should a fledgling’s gaze look like?” He only knew about the eye color of the fledgling.

Ying Feng didn’t continue. They finished touring that floor, moving to the next level showcasing folk artifacts. This area was more relaxed than the top floor, with softer lighting and soothing music playing.

“Mem, mory, Stone.” Ling Xiao read the name of the artifact in front of him.

He looked down and noticed that this wasn’t just one stone, but a row of them. From left to right, there were about more than ten stones. Each stone was inscribed with ancient characters that he couldn’t understand. In front of the stones, there were also labels indicating their respective eras.

It was then he realized that these stones weren’t excavated from the same batch. Even their estimated ages varied. The stone on the far left dated back to 4,000 years ago, and as he looked further to the right, the stones became progressively newer. Surprisingly, the one on the far right was marked as being from just 70-80 years ago.

“Logically speaking, items within a hundred years should not be classified as historical relics. However, this item is an exception in this museum. The ‘Memory Stone’ spans from thousands of years to just decades, transcending the scope of typical artifacts. Its existence remains an enigma in historical circles.”

Ling Xiao looked up to find the museum staff member who had been explaining to him standing politely nearby.

“Can I ask about these stones?”

“These artifacts from different eras share a common feature—they all bear the exact same inscription. When historians found the first ‘Memory Stone’, they thought it was just a typical stone inscribed with ancient script. But as the second and third stones surfaced, it became clear that these were no ordinary stones.”

“No one can live for thousands of years,” Ling Xiao said. “The inscriptions on these stones were probably engraved by different people. For example, the most recent one; anyone who’s been to this museum could mimic it.”

“In theory, yes. This made the discovery of the recent stone quite controversial. Given how popular the culture of the Memory Stone has become, many try to imitate it. But after extensive scrutiny by handwriting experts, the inscriptions on these stones, whether in writing style or engraving technique, all seem to originate from the same person. That’s the most intriguing part of the Memory Stone.”

“That’s unbelievable!” Ling Xiao exclaimed, somewhat taken aback. “What do the inscriptions mean?”

“It’s an ancient language. Pronounced ‘Oh-sa-mi-su-ka’, in modern language it translates to ‘I miss you.'”

“Oh sami suka,” Ling Xiao repeated.

“Yes.”

Ling Xiao recited it a couple more times, finding the phrase rather pleasant to the ears. He turned around to find that Ying Feng, who had just been beside him, had wandered off to another display, presumably uninterested in the topic at hand.

“The museum offers a service where interested visitors can carve their own ‘Memory Stone’. We’ll use a ‘time machine’ to deliver it to your loved one.”

“A time machine?”

The staff member chuckled. “Not the kind you’re thinking of. We’ll safely store your Memory Stone and after three, five, or even ten years, we’ll send it to the terminal number you provide.”

“I see,” Ling Xiao mused. “I don’t really have anyone I’m missing right now, so maybe I’ll pass.”

“Just because you don’t miss someone today doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. The Memory Stone is a popular symbol of love nowadays. It translates to wanting to be with someone every single moment. Even lovers who see each other daily opt for this meaningful gift, hoping to surprise their future partners.”

Ling Xiao had to admit that the sales pitch was convincing. While he currently didn’t have a partner, if life could change so drastically in just ten days, what could ten years bring?

“Alright,” he agreed. “I’ll carve one.”

The staff chose a stone for him and provided an ancient script sample. Using his own dagger, Ling Xiao meticulously began to engrave the stone.

“Done,” handing over the finished product to the staff, the latter’s expression momentarily froze.

“Your imitation is very close to the original.”

“Really? Perhaps I was influenced by what I saw.”

The staff nodded in agreement. “I’ll package this for you. Have you decided when you’d like this delivered?”

“The longest duration,” Ling Xiao swiped his card and hesitated momentarily during registration. In the end, he filled in Ying Feng’s terminal number.

Ten years… If the ‘Awakening Plan’ succeeds, he and Ying Feng’s blood pact should be over by then. This could serve as his parting gift.

Just as he finished, Ying Feng returned and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Nothing.” Ling Xiao hastily handed everything back to the staff. “Just buying some souvenirs.”

Ying Feng, seeing Ling Xiao empty-handed, wasn’t convinced.

Ling Xiao truly became interested in the museum and ended up spending an entire day there. Ying Feng thought he would go back and rest in the dormitory after returning, but to his surprise, Ling Xiao insisted on going to the training hall for a “short while” of practice.

After a “short while” later, Ling Xiao, drenched in sweat, collapsed onto the floor. Even Ying Feng was forced to sit on the ground, catching his breath.

Finally stabilizing his breathing, Ling Xiao said, “Let’s take a break and then continue.”

“Again?”

“I haven’t trained all day today, and tomorrow I’ll be out the whole day for blood donation. If I don’t work hard now, I’ll fall behind the others.”

Ying Feng couldn’t help but ask, “Do you really need to push yourself this hard?”

Ling Xiao, lying flat on the floor, raised one hand, showing a tiny gap between his thumb and index finger.

“You see, this was the gap between me and you in the past. I always felt that with a little more effort, I could surpass you.”

Then he opened his hand wide. “Now, this is the gap between you and me. No matter how hard I try, I can’t catch up.”

He lowered his hand, looking straight at the ceiling, calmly stating, “Ying Feng, I’ll never catch up to you in this lifetime. But whether it was before or now, my desire to close that gap has never changed. Whether the gap is of a finger’s or an arm’s length, I’ll do my best to get closer to the height you’re at.”

Ying Feng was silent for a long while, then stood up, extending his hand to Ling Xiao.

Ling Xiao took it, and with a pull from Ying Feng, was lifted off the ground.

Ying Feng took a step back, signaling Ling Xiao to get ready.

“Let’s go.”

The author has something to say:

1. Some readers previously questioned why Ling Xiao, after taking the Ember, was defeated by Ying Feng, while Zhu Yue, after taking Ember, managed to defeat Zhen He. The original text clearly explained that the effects of the Ember had worn off when Ling Xiao confronted Ying Feng. He took on the coming-of-age ceremony with Ying Feng while under the side effects and being severely injured.

2. Some think Zhu Yue’s pact with Zhen He was sudden or arbitrary. Zhen He’s foreshadow appeared in Chapter 22, and even earlier hints in the story indicated that the Qizhu isn’t necessarily the gong, and it wasn’t referring to the virgin Ping Zong.

Chapter 53

When Ling Xiao and Ying Feng passed by a certain dorm room, they suddenly heard a loud noise from inside. Ling Xiao immediately took a defensive stance, preparing for an imminent threat. However, after the initial noise, the room went silent. As Ling Xiao moved to investigate, Ying Feng stopped him.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking what’s happening inside.”

“Don’t bother.”

Ling Xiao could sense some aversion in Ying Feng’s demeanor and asked, “Whose room is this?”

“Zhu Yue’s.”

Ling Xiao immediately lost interest. Other nearby students had also heard the commotion, but due to Zhu Yue’s unpopularity, no one came to check on him. A neighbor even banged on the wall, signaling for silence.

Everything finally calmed down, and Zhu Yue gradually regained his senses. The metallic sweet taste of someone’s blood lingered on the tip of his tongue.

He vaguely remembered catching Zhen He off guard. Zhen He’s first instinct was to escape, but how could Zhu Yue possibly give him that chance? Just as Zhu Yue was about to draw blood from Zhen He’s heart, Zhen He, out of desperation, initiated the “coming-of-age ceremony” and even fought back with all his might.

Zhen He was truly powerful. Unfortunately, no matter how strong he was, he couldn’t surpass the power of the “Ember II” that was refined twenty times. In the end, he was defeated by Zhu Yue, whose strength was vastly inferior to his.

Of course, their abilities were now roughly on par.

Zhu Yue felt the effects of the drug gradually waning, and his mind was becoming clearer and clearer. He knew he had to act quickly to deal with the aftermath. Struggling, he picked up the soul binding stone and returned it to its original place. He then took a rope from a hidden compartment and tightly bound Zhen He, who was on the ground, several times around. If this had been in the past, he surely wouldn’t have had the strength to tie someone so securely.

Zhen He’s personal device was strapped to his wrist. Zhu Yue ruthlessly tore it off and, grabbing something at hand, smashed it into pieces. He then took out a box of tranquilizers that he had prepared earlier and injected Zhen He with one of them.

Having done all this, he staggered towards the table. On the verge of collapsing, he could only stretch out a hand, desperately searching the tabletop. Several books detailing the bond between a “Qizhu” and a “Qizi” were scattered on the ground. Some were open, revealing highlighted sections with red lines:

—A Qizhu will acquire all of the Qizi’s power and wealth.

—Aside from being influenced by hormones, as long as there’s a strong desire, the coming-of-age ceremony can be initiated actively.

—After the coming-of-age ceremony, the union of the two parties can promote secondary development.

Zhu Yue finally found the second syringe. Up until this moment, he was completely unaware of the side effects of the second generation drug, and even less did he know that one could die without the purification injection. He silently thanked Zhen He; he truly was a competent businessman.

His breathing became chaotic, and his blood felt as if it was boiling. His vision was reduced to a hazy fog. After several attempts, he finally managed to insert the needle into his arm and injected the clear liquid. He carelessly tossed away the syringe afterward and immediately collapsed, losing consciousness.

……

When Ling Xiao woke up, he still felt soreness in his waist and back. Recalling the events of the previous night, he felt incredibly uneasy.

Even if he was the one who initiated it—a residual psychological shadow from a risky period where he felt more secure being close to the other—what followed? Ying Feng, who usually had a rational excuse for even intimacy, actually took the initiative to break the equilibrium yesterday. In front of a Qizhu’s desires, a Qizi’s body could never resist. By the end, Ling Xiao was the one clinging to Ying Feng, making it hard to claim he was forced.

But he couldn’t accept it. “The time before last was to get through the safe period, last time was to vent, then what about this time?”

“Because I wanted to.”

“You’re not even bothering to make up an excuse?!”

Ying Feng sat up. “I’ve already given my reason. For the first time, we were together not for a specific purpose but simply because of desire.”

However, he didn’t wish to elaborate further. “Get up,” he said, turning away. “Don’t you have classes today?”

Ling Xiao jumped to his feet, reminded by Ying Feng’s words that the holidays were over, and he hadn’t attended class in a while.

“Yes!” Even the pain from injuries wouldn’t stop him; he wouldn’t laze around just because of some lingering discomfort.

Entering the familiar classroom, classmates greeted him enthusiastically. Ting Lei, as usual, wanted to hug him as a sign of missing him, but a glance to the back of the classroom stopped him. He hesitated, thinking, ‘Hadn’t the period of establishing dominion ended? What was with that warning glare? Was he blacklisted for good?’

During the break, many pairs had undergone the coming-of-age ceremony, leaving almost a third of the seats empty, even Zhu Yue’s.

“Zhu Yue’s an adult now?” He wondered if someone had just casually bit him.

Ting Lei glanced disdainfully at the empty seat. “He’s been skipping class a lot lately. Even the teacher gave up on him.”

The instructor arrived, and everyone took their seats. Noticing both Ling Xiao and Ying Feng attending and in good condition, the instructor was pleased. After class, he held them back.

“Decided on a major?”

“Yes,” Ying Feng answered. “We’re considering the Joint Combat program.”

“Joint Combat? It’s tough to get into. Is Ling Xiao up for it?”

Ling Xiao felt slightly insulted.

“No, no, I didn’t mean it that way,” the instructor hurriedly clarified. “I trust your combat skills, but there’s a written exam. How are you in academic subjects?”

“Huh?” Ling Xiao was dumbfounded. Academic subjects in military school?

“I previously thought that only Ying Feng was preparing for the exam, so I didn’t mention it.” The instructor pulled up their academic records from over the years. In the past, these would have been considered personal and private, but now, the privacy between the two had diminished significantly.

Ling Xiao had always considered himself on par with Ying Feng, but that was only in terms of physical abilities. Seeing Ying Feng’s scores in academic subjects was like a slap in the face.

“Your scores in biology, astronomy, and geography are decent, math is… passable, but what’s with your history? Ying Feng has been scoring full marks in history year after year. Even if you can’t excel, you should at least pass, right?”

Ling Xiao looked at his own scores and then at Ying Feng’s. He had long realized Ying Feng was academically gifted, but achieving perfect scores every year was downright terrifying, wasn’t it?

“History is a mandatory subject in Royal Sky. If you really decide to enroll in the Joint Combat program, you’ll have to start cramming,” the instructor said, checking the calendar on the terminal. “There’s less than a month before the next Royal Sky Military Academy entrance exam. You need to lift your academic probation, undergo mental strength training, and catch up on history. Are you sure you can manage all of that?”

Ling Xiao wouldn’t give up just because of mere history. He puffed out his chest and said, “No problem!”

“Let me briefly show you how to train your mental strength. In the elementary academy, we mainly focus on physical training. But in the advanced academy, mental strength becomes crucial. Here’s the simplest training method,” the instructor demonstrated.

He crumpled a piece of paper into a ball and placed it in his palm. After concentrating, the paper ball started to levitate and spin above his hand, leaving Ling Xiao in awe.

“This ability is very important for us. All future skills are catalyzed by it. It’s usually taught in the advanced academy, but early practice won’t hurt you.”

“How can we do that?”

“Focus. Channel your energy into your palm, then try to materialize it.”

Ling Xiao had already started practicing with a paper ball. The instructor playfully tapped the back of his head. “That’s secondary. The main focus is history. Ying Feng will supervise you. If you have any questions, ask him.”

Walking from the classroom to the library, then returning to the dorm with a stack of books, Ling Xiao tried to move the paper ball the entire way until Ying Feng confiscated it.

“Finish the content I’ve outlined for you first, then you can continue practicing,” Ying Feng ordered.

Ling Xiao, despite his disdain for history, remembered his promise to Ying Feng. Still, he couldn’t help but complain, “Reading is so boring.”

“What would make it not boring?”

“It’d be great if we could go back in time to see it,” he mused.

“Keep dreaming.” Ying Feng negotiated, “For every hour you read, you can have thirty minutes for mental training.”

“One hour,” Ling Xiao countered.

“Forty minutes.”

“Forty-five.”

Ying Feng glared, and Ling Xiao surrendered. “Fine, forty it is.”

While Ling Xiao was engrossed in the dry history textbook, Ying Feng secretly held a crumpled ball of paper in his hand.

Mental strength, huh?

He tried to do as the instructor had said, concentrating his attention on the palm of his hand, but he didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary, and the paper ball didn’t move an inch.

The method wasn’t working. Ying Feng quickly decided to change his approach. He imagined the paper ball as Ling Xiao and used the ability to control the contract beast to manipulate it. The ball in his palm immediately took flight, spinning rapidly in the air.

Interesting.

With a swift motion, Ying Feng grabbed the paper ball. Whether it was manipulating the Qizi or the paper ball, the same ability was used. So, this was what they call mental strength. Fu Yao had smashed a stone pillar with a single punch, and the principal had flown up to the rooftop in one breath. They had both used the same force before, presumably based on the same principle. For Ying Feng, who already had experience, using mental strength was effortless. He just wondered if Ling Xiao, being a Qizi, could grasp it quickly.

“Time’s up!” Ling Xiao seemed to have timed it perfectly as he jumped up, then devoted himself wholeheartedly to making the paper ball fly. Ying Feng silently observed from the side. As forty minutes almost passed and the paper ball remained motionless, just when Ying Feng thought Ling Xiao couldn’t do it on his first try using mental strength, Ling Xiao suddenly exclaimed.

“Look!”

Ying Feng was taken aback. Sure enough, under Ling Xiao’s effort, the paper ball had slightly lifted from his hand, hovering in mid-air. Even though it was just a tiny distance, for someone trying for the first time, this result was already astonishing.

If only Ling Xiao made similar progress in history, it would have been much easier.

Ying Feng didn’t praise him but ruthlessly told him that time was up and casually picked up a history book.

“Now, let’s test what you just read. Legend has it that the Tianxiu people had two ancestors. What were their names?”

“Ah, I know. One of them looks like Xing Lou. He’s called…”

Ying Feng emotionlessly flipped to the next page. “The last emperor’s name in Tianxiu history?”

“Uh…”

“How is the New Era defined?”

“This one…”

Ying Feng slammed the book down. “Before the first year, it was the imperial system. After that, it became a republic. How do you not know such basic questions?”

What an idiot!

Ling Xiao was unhappy. “Even if I don’t know, you don’t have to call me an idiot.”

“If you’re not an idiot, then what are you? Even a first-grade fledgling can answer these basic questions.”

There was an awkward silence in the room for a few seconds.

“Hold on.” Ying Feng suddenly realized something. “I didn’t call you an idiot just now.”

Ling Xiao responded, “But I clearly seemed to have heard it…”

Searching his memory, Ying Feng quickly grabbed a book from the shelf and accurately flipped to a certain page. Ling Xiao leaned in to see.

—Mental communication: When the bond between the Qizhu and the Qizi, as well as their mental strength, reaches a certain value, they can mentally communicate. There are distance limitations to mental communication, usually directly proportional to mental strength. Using this ability also consumes mental strength.

Ling Xiao, always focusing on the wrong details, said, “What does it mean by feelings reaching a certain value? Who has such feelings with you?”

Ying Feng closed his eyes, concentrating slowly. The feeling from earlier gradually returned.

Ling Xiao!

Ling Xiao jumped up. “I heard it!”

It felt like a call within his mind.

Is it clear?

“Very clear!”

Then…

“Then what? There’s nothing after that!”

Ying Feng opened his eyes again. “I don’t know. My mental strength might have been depleted.”

“Just that much?” Ling Xiao thought they could at least chat for five minutes.

“I just grasped it; how much do you think I could have?”

Ling Xiao had a sudden idea. “In that case, I don’t need to study anymore, right? You can just tell me the answers during exams!”

Ying Feng’s eyes twitched. “You realize that’s cheating, right?”

“Of course not! Did you forget the Joint Combat Department’s enrollment brochure? This department primarily values the abilities between the Qizhu and the Qizi, as well as their emotional harmony. Isn’t mental communication the best proof?”

Ying Feng retorted emotionlessly, “Who just said our bond hasn’t reached that level?”

Ling Xiao awkwardly twitched the corner of his mouth, regretting not having commented earlier. Why was he settling accounts after the fact?

On the other hand, Ying Feng was deep in thought. Although Ling Xiao’s analysis seemed far-fetched, it wasn’t entirely without merit. Being the only major in Royal Sky that required both parties to take an entrance exam, it was unlikely they’d only use traditional testing methods.

Ying Feng didn’t believe that the military academy would be unaware of the existence of psychic communication. Perhaps they might even employ some monitoring method they weren’t aware of. Yet this wasn’t mentioned in the exam instructions, which was suspicious.

What surprised him even more was that he had assumed Ling Xiao hadn’t considered the Joint Combat major when browsing online. Yet, Ling Xiao remembered the admission brochure in such detail. Could it be that he’d been interested in this major all along?

“Here’s what we’ll do.” Ying Feng concluded after some contemplation, making up his mind. “I can assist you, but you must also put in the effort. For a total score of 100, if you can solve questions worth 30 points, I’ll provide you with answers for another 30 to help you pass.”

Ling Xiao was thrilled. “So if I score 50 points on my own, you can help me get a full score?”

“Exactly,” Ying Feng promised. “That’s the deal.”

Ling Xiao was filled with renewed vigor. “No problem. I’ll study history diligently. But you also need to practice your mental strength. Don’t run out of energy after just a few words during the exam.”

“Deal.”

Ling Xiao held his fist up high in a gesture that took Ying Feng a moment to understand. Once he got it, he too extended his fist. Ling Xiao brought his down with force, and their fists bumped together in the air.

Chapter 52

No image had ever shocked Ying Feng as much as this one. He stared at the person in front of him for a long time, forgetting why he had initially called him. It was Ling Xiao who, after waiting for what felt like ages without any response from Ying Feng, took the initiative to ask, “What did you call me for?”

Still unaware of his own abnormality, Ying Feng countered, “Why did you smile?”

“Did I smile?” Ling Xiao touched his own lips, seeming genuinely surprised. “I don’t know why, but as soon as I entered here, I felt an incredible peace of mind and just… smiled.”

“It’s the power of God. God brings tranquility to our souls. Everyone who enters the church is touched by His grace.”

A voice echoed from the other end of the church. They both turned to see a priest emerging from a narrow door on the side. While it was impossible to determine the age of a Tianxiu person when they matured, the wisdom in the eyes of this man suggested that he had lived through many years, with invisible traces of time etching on his unchanging appearance.

He approached and studied the two closely. “It’s your first time here, isn’t it? Do you need any assistance?”

“Oh.” Ling Xiao quickly handed over the book he was holding. “I come from Bikong. Our principal asked me to deliver this to Ling Xing, saying it’s his relic.”

The priest, seemingly taken aback upon hearing that name, hesitated before accepting the book. He opened the first page, recognizing a familiar face among countless others with blank expressions.

“Yes, this is his graduation memorial. He once mentioned wanting to fetch it but was always hindered by one thing or another. I never thought someone would bring it after so long.”

He looked up at Ling Xiao, but it seemed as if he was looking past him. “The first time I met him, he stood exactly where you are now. He was in such a terrible state that even God couldn’t light up the shadows in his heart. He seemed to be living but was as hollow as a zombie.”

“He had dropped out by then, and seeing him lost, I offered him shelter here, teaching him the will of God. It was God who pulled him back from the brink. He grew livelier day by day. Not only did he move past his tormented past, but he also helped many others overcome their despair, earning the admiration of many. The only regret is that the trauma left such an impact on him that he never accepted the coming-of-age ceremony, remaining in his fledgling state for eighty years.”

Ling Xiao glanced at Ying Feng, noticing him listening intently.

“Can we visit where he lived before?”

The priest closed the book. “Follow me.”

They followed the priest through the narrow door they had spotted earlier.

“His room is small. Since our spirits are enriched, we don’t need much material wealth,” he said as he opened the door to reveal a compact room.

Although small, it was efficiently packed with a variety of items, creating a cozy yet uncluttered atmosphere.

“I clean regularly, so it’s neat. Feel free to sit.”

Ling Xiao looked around the room: a bunk bed and a double desk with two chairs almost filled the entire space. The only other prominent feature was a bookshelf carved into the wall, filled with books.

“Did you two live together?” he curiously asked.

“No.” The priest’s gaze followed Ling Xiao’s to the bunk bed. “My room isn’t here.”

“So he had another roommate?”

The priest gently touched the upper bunk’s edge. “This bed was added later. A very special person once lived here.”

“A special person?”

“Yes,” the priest said. “Ling Xing fostered a ‘Lone Star’.”

“Lone Star?” Ling Xiao was puzzled.

Ying Feng, who had been silent since entering the room, took over the conversation. “A ‘Lone Star’ is an extremely rare mental condition. Those termed ‘Lone Stars’ exhibit regressive personalities, lacking human emotions and empathy. In their minds, there’s no compassion, only obedience. Given a command, they can mercilessly kill, even if their target is defenseless.”

“Such emotionally deficient individuals appear only once every five hundred years on average. Similarly, every five hundred years, the Tiangu Star aligns in a straight line with the Tianxiu Star and the Zhiyang, so people named them after the Tiangu Star*. These ‘Lone Star’ lack the ability to love. Once awakened, they would seek out the strongest individual in their fledgling state and kill them, instantly absorbing their power, evolving into the most terrifying fighting machines. Once, a ‘Lone Star’ single-handedly destroyed a small nation in Linxing. It was from that incident that nations began to realize the power of these flawed personalities.”

*Clarity: Lone Star is [Gu Xing] (孤星). Tiangu Star is [Tiangu Xing] (天孤星), which is where the name is derived from.

The priest nodded in approval. “You’re right. It’s said that ancient Tianxiu people once behaved this way. There was a time when we were all ‘Lone Stars’. But as we all evolved, the ‘Lone Star’ became a true outlier. Once awakened, they would massacre their own kind. No school could shelter them. Normally, the military should handle such beings, but Ling Xing believed that the military’s training would make him even more ruthless. Hence, an agreement with the church was made to keep him here, nurtured by Ling Xing until his awakening, and then handed over to the military.”

“You might not understand what true nurturing means. Religion in Tianxiu is completely foreign. To learn the will of God, I once overcame the soul traction and visited many neighboring planets. In their social structures, each fledgling is raised by their family, taught in detail how to do everything. Such things don’t happen in our race.”

“But Ling Xing did it. Being in a fledgling state, he meticulously nurtured another fledgling, teaching him right from wrong, what’s permissible, and what’s not. He taught him to think with the emotions of a normal person and to empathize with others. In Tianxiu, where familial bonds are hard to understand, they lived like real family members.”

The priest looked up. “The books you see were brought by Ling Xing to help him understand human culture. He said that a ‘Lone Star’ could never truly grasp human emotions but could at least learn human norms through books. Under his influence, that person developed a reading habit, always turning to books for answers when in doubt.”

Ling Xiao’s gaze shifted from the bookshelf to the table, as if visualizing two people sitting back-to-back, one reading aloud from a book, with the other occasionally asking questions and the former explaining in response.

“When you entered earlier, you must have noticed the plants in the yard. Those seeds were also brought from various planets at Ling Xing’s request. According to the agreement between the church and the military, the ‘Lone Star’ is required to join the army at least once a year to learn combat skills. Also, since ‘Lone Star’ lacks the soul traction and often travels between planets alone, Ling Xing instructed him to bring back seeds from every place he visited. Ling Xing hoped this would help him realize that not all planets are about resources and killing, but also about the beauty of life.”

“Why was Ling Xing eventually executed?” Ling Xiao asked, increasingly confused. If Ling Xing was as good as the priest described, why was he sentenced to death?

The priest’s expression turned grave. “The year I left for Linxing to study doctrine as usual, by the time I returned, both had disappeared. Despite trying every means, we couldn’t find them.”

“The church suspected the military, but they denied it until rumors about secretly assassinating Ling Xing emerged. Succumbing to public pressure, the military announced that they hadn’t assassinated him but sentenced him to death instead.”

“But he was still in a fledgling state.” Ling Xiao remembered vividly. “Isn’t it said that a fledgling’s death would scatter their soul?”

“Exactly.” The priest’s tone became indignant. “The law doesn’t allow fledglings to be sentenced to death. But the military claimed that he was no longer a fledgling when executed, yet provided no evidence of Ling Xing’s adulthood nor revealed the identity of the Qizhu. This issue escalated tensions between the church and the military and remains unresolved.”

“What about the ‘Lone Star’ he raised?”

“I don’t know. He vanished with Ling Xing. We haven’t received any news about him since. He might be secretly kept as a weapon by the military, fighting on some unknown planet now.” The priest said righteously, “They’ve always been like this, seeing war as their sole purpose. One day, God will hold them accountable for their actions.”

Ling Xiao and Ying Feng exchanged glances. “I heard he committed the crime of treason. What exactly did he do?”

The priest’s mood gradually calmed down. “He stole a seed.”

“A seed?”

“The seed of the Tree of Souls.”

Ling Xiao remembered the Tree of Souls he saw at the base. “Why would he steal the seed?”

“In fact, in order to overcome the soul traction and expand territory, the military has long tried to build Soul Lighthouses on other planets. However, these lighthouses don’t work. Researchers later discovered that the lighthouse and the tree are a whole. Only around the Tree of Souls will the lighthouse light up. A lighthouse without the tree is just a decoration.”

Ling Xiao had already heard the term ‘soul traction’ from him three times. Being ignorant about it, he looked at Ying Feng for an explanation. Ying Feng briefly relayed the knowledge he had received from Fu Yao.

“That’s right,” the priest said after listening to Ying Feng’s explanation, nodding. “Modern Tianxius have varying degrees of the soul traction. Ancient people didn’t have this problem. The doctrine believes this is God’s way of preventing our uncontrolled expansion, using this method to alleviate our sins.”

“The Tree of Souls only produces a seed every few thousand years. Some predict that the current Tree of Souls is aging since fewer and fewer souls are growing on it. One day it will stop completely, and then a new Tree of Souls will be needed. But the military insanely wants to plant the seed on other planets. The best way to maximize this scope is to let a person without the soul traction take the seed to a distant place to plant, and then force the locals to build a lighthouse. This way, they can double their operational area.”

“A person without the soul traction? Isn’t that the Lone Star?”

“That’s right, so the military gave him the task. But the plan was ruined by Ling Xing first. Even now, I don’t think he did anything wrong. He violated the doctrine against theft, yet saved countless innocent lives and prevented our brethren from committing killings. For the sins of one, many sentients were blessed.”

“Where is the stolen seed now?”

The priest shook his head. “I don’t know. The military has searched many times. No matter what, they couldn’t find the seed. With Ling Xing’s sentence to death, the matter will remain a mystery forever.”

Ling Xiao and the others had been there for a long time. When saying goodbye, the priest personally escorted them out. As they passed through the flower-filled courtyard again, every flower seemed to have a special significance.

“I haven’t talked about Ling Xing for a long time. I’m glad people still remember him. We have an inherent aggressiveness in our souls, but faith can help us overcome that. Force should be used to defend, not to invade. I hope more young people understand this. You’re always welcome here.”

Before leaving, Ling Xiao subtly expressed a wish to drive. This time, Ying Feng didn’t stop him and voluntarily took the passenger seat.

On the way, Ling Xiao constantly felt like someone was watching him. Every time he turned his head, he met Ying Feng’s gaze, which made him feel uneasy.

“I really won’t drive recklessly,” he said. “Even if I was excited earlier, I left that feeling at the church. I’m calm now.”

Ying Feng silently turned his head, not wanting to say that the reason he was watching him wasn’t because of that.

Oblivious Ling Xiao only felt that Ying Feng had been acting a bit strange since they entered the church. He didn’t consider where the strangeness came from and didn’t delve deeper into the meaning of Ying Feng’s constant glances.

“Where do you think Ling Xing hid the seed?”

Ying Feng, preoccupied with other thoughts, replied, “I don’t know. What do you think?”

“If I were him, I’d give it to someone important to keep,” Ling Xiao expressed his thoughts.

“The only important person is the priest. But I believe he wasn’t lying; he doesn’t know where the seed is.”

“What about the Lone Star? He’s important to him too.”

“The seed was stolen from him. Why would he give it back for safekeeping?”

Realizing his paradox, Ling Xiao rubbed his nose awkwardly, “I guess I was wrong then.”

But after saying this, Ling Xiao thought, ‘Besides the priest and the Lone Star, who else would he entrust the seed?’

By the time the two returned to the academy, it was already dusk. Ling Xiao, with sharp eyes, saw a familiar person entering the dormitory building.

“Is that Zhen He? What’s he doing in the 10th-grade dormitory?”

Upon hearing the name, Ying Feng frowned. “I don’t know. Stay away from him. He’s not good.”

They intentionally slowed down their pace to distance themselves from the person who had entered just before them. When Zhu Yue opened the door, he cautiously checked the hallway to ensure no one was present, then made room for Zhen He to enter.

“I’ve brought the items. Service is impeccable. Buy one get one free,” Zhen He produced two portable syringes, one with a bright orange liquid inside, the other clear.

“The orange one is ‘Ember II’, while the clear one is a purifying agent. The second generation has strong side effects. The purifier won’t spare you from the pain, but it will at least ensure you don’t die. I’ve told you their uses. If you mix up the order, don’t blame me for not warning you.”

After saying this, he placed the syringes on the table. He wasn’t worried in the slightest about Zhu Yue reneging on the deal. To Zhen He, Zhu Yue was as vulnerable as a person he could crush with one finger; any suspicion would be redundant.

After hearing the introduction, Zhu Yue silently retrieved the soul binding stone from where he hid it the day before and handed it to Zhen He as previously agreed. Zhen He was very pleased with Zhu Yue’s actions. He had heard about the disappearance of the soul binding stone, and that the military was frantically searching for it. He hadn’t expected such a seemingly inept individual to have secretly stashed it away. It seemed that although his abilities might be lacking, his courage certainly wasn’t.

Zhen He admired the mysterious ore in his hand. There was a legend associated with the soul binding stone—that it could awaken the soul’s oldest memories. He wondered if the legend was true.

But if it were true… a realization suddenly struck Zhen He, as if he had overlooked something vital. If the legend was indeed true, then what about Zhu Yue…?

Silently, Zhu Yue picked up the bright orange syringe. So, this was the substance Ling Xiao had stolen from the base—the very thing that helped him defeat the Kui and become entwined with Ying Feng.

“Is this truly ‘Ember II’? Let me test it.”

What?

Realizing something was amiss, Zhen He turned around just in time to see Zhu Yue pushing the last drop of the substance into his body. A flash of red in Zhu Yue’s eyes was followed by a low growl, revealing his sharp, pointed fangs.

Chapter 51

Upon seeing the message on the screen, Xing Lou couldn’t help but laugh. After pondering for a moment, he replied in kind.

[Your guess is spot on.]

Indeed! Heng He’s eyes shone. He never expected that one day he could “face-to-face” communicate with his idol in such a manner. This feeling was even more exhilarating than winning the top scientific invention award.

Yue Ying approached in a mode of fiber bundles. “You’re lying again.”

“How can you say I’m lying? All the information I passed on to him came from Tai Yin. I’m just the messenger. It would be strange if I said otherwise.”

“It’s also fortunate that he’s an admirer of Tai Yin and is obsessed with science, so everything went incredibly smoothly.”

“Right. Next, we just need to patiently wait for them to revive your body. Unfortunately, in the end, they’ll find out that after all their hard work, they only obtained a body without consciousness. I can’t wait to see the military’s reaction.”

As they were speaking, Heng He sent another long message.

[Teacher Tai Yin, I’m fully aware of your intention to help us, to cancel the coming-of-age ceremony, and to break the blood pact. This is also our goal! With your help, I believe we can achieve this soon. I promise not to disclose your identity to the military!]

Xing Lou chuckled. “This guy is so naively amusing.”

[Keep it up*.]

*Jiayou (加油) It’s a ubiquitous Chinese expression of encouragement and support. There is no direct translation for it (depends on context) but it could mean like good luck, you go do it!, ect.

He sent these words and then unilaterally terminated the connection. Then, he dialed Zhen He’s communicator.

“Senior, I want you to check out Zhu Yue’s background. You haven’t forgotten, have you?”

“I really don’t understand. What’s so special about someone like him that interests you? Oh well, I’m on it.”

Xing Lou was finally satisfied. “Thanks.”

Zhu Yue was once again “amicably” stopped by schoolmates for a “chat”. In the past decade, he faced such situations as if they were a daily routine. Not just from seniors, but even juniors would trouble him without any hesitation.

Over the years, the only tactic he mastered was to close his eyes, bear the torment silently, and wait for the bullies to get tired and leave. But today, it didn’t end that way.

Following a few thuds, the surroundings became quiet. He cautiously opened one eye and saw a pair of feet in front of him, and the bullies were scattered around those feet.

“Is it you?” He looked up with trepidation, unable to believe he’d encountered Zhen He here. “Aren’t you from that shop… Why are you here?”

Zhen He didn’t answer. “You don’t even resist bullies of this level? No wonder everyone picks on you. Can’t you show a little backbone?”

Zhu Yue, in this state, really didn’t seem to offer anything that would interest Xing Lou.

“I… I can’t beat them.”

“You never even tried to fight back. How would you know?”

Zhu Yue nervously glanced at the ground. This person had just effortlessly defeated three opponents. Even though they were from lower grades, their skill level was still enough for him to look up to.

“You… seem very strong?”

Zhen He chuckled. “What do you think?”

“Do you know Ying Feng from our class? He’s also strong. I wonder who’s stronger between the two of you.”

Zhen He made an estimate. “I’d stand no chance against him now. But if it were his younger self, we might be evenly matched.”

Zhu Yue looked down. “It must be nice to be as strong and wealthy as you.”

Zhen He couldn’t see anything special about Zhu Yue—unless being extraordinarily weak counted. And this weakness didn’t seem like an act. As far as Zhen He was concerned, his assignment from Xing Lou could end here. Perhaps Xing Lou had merely misjudged.

Just as he was about to leave, Zhu Yue said, “I want to buy something.”

Hearing potential business, Zhen He was immediately interested. “You’ve already made two purchases from me. Do you still have money?”

Zhu Yue cautiously looked around and whispered, “Follow me.”

Zhen He followed him to his dorm room and saw him nervously lock the door.

“Now that I’m here, speak up.”

“Let me state my request first.” Zhu Yue gritted his teeth. “I want the thing Ling Xiao stole from the base—exactly the same!”

Zhen He looked at him skeptically. “For me, that item isn’t hard to procure. But do you really think you can afford it? Don’t give me something like a month’s allowance; even a year’s worth might not be enough.”

“Wait a moment.”

Zhen He watched as Zhu Yue methodically opened a hidden compartment in his bedside table. With every step, Zhen He’s expression grew more and more astonished until Zhu Yue pulled out a soul binding stone from within.

“This should be enough to buy what I want, right?”

Upon seeing what Zhu Yue held, Zhen He’s gaze didn’t waver an inch. “No problem. Give me a day, and I guarantee I’ll get you what you want.”

Zhu Yue returned the soul binding stone to its original place. “Once you bring me what I want, I will naturally hand this over to you. I have one more condition: the transaction must be done in person, right here.”

“Why?”

“Both your items and mine are contraband. They’re likely to be caught by the security system during inter-dimensional transfer.”

“If that’s what you’re worried about, there’s no need. The head of the Tianyuan Network is well acquainted with me. There’s never been an issue with items from me.”

“No, I can’t take any risks,” Zhu Yue insisted. “This is my condition. If you want the soul binding stone, you’ll have to personally come and exchange it.”

Zhen He reluctantly shook his head. “Alright. I’ll prepare what you need. Please keep my payment safe. I’ll come to collect it.”

……

Ling Xiao had been beating around the bush in the principal’s office for a good half hour, and the principal sensed that there must be another reason for his sudden visit.

“What do you want to ask? Just speak directly.”

Since the principal said so, Ling Xiao went straight to the point.

“Principal, do you know someone named Ling Xing?”

The principal’s heart tightened. “Why are you asking about him?”

“Well…” Ling Xiao hesitated. Ever since he came across that name, he had been intrigued. “During a previous base tour, Dr. Zhi Shang mentioned that those awakened in the same energy chamber have the same surname. It’s like they are siblings of other races. I saw this name in the library among the survivors of the Ash Event. According to the doctor’s statement, he would be my brother. I would like to know more about him.”

The principal paced slowly, lost in memories. “I remember that name very clearly. Ling Xing’s class was the first batch of students I encountered upon coming to Bikong. Back then, I wasn’t the principal, and they were just freshmen. I watched them grow from the first year to the tenth, reliving my own student years.”

“Many students of that batch awakened by their ninth year, but by the tenth year, only Ling Xing hadn’t. Even though their physical awakenings were early, they resisted the coming-of-age ceremony mentally. They even formed an anti-coming-of-age alliance, continuously recruiting more fledglings both offline and online.”

“Once, behind the adults’ backs, they secretly convened what they called a major alliance meeting. Ling Xing was also dragged in. That day, someone’s hormones unexpectedly spiraled out of control. One triggered another until everyone lost control, turning their weapons against their comrades.”

“Ling Xing miraculously remained unaffected, but he witnessed the whole thing from a corner. The next day, when the adults found them, only half were alive. And Ling Xing was the only fledgling among the survivors.”

“After the incident, the principal and several administrators resigned. I then took up the role of acting principal. But Ling Xing was no longer my student.”

Having personally witnessed the departure of two souls, Ling Xiao was deeply affected. He could hardly imagine how Ling Xing must have felt, hiding in a corner, watching familiar faces turn on each other in bloody combat. However, he didn’t understand what the principal said next.

“No longer your student? Why?”

“The survivors of that incident all suffered varying degrees of psychological damage. Ling Xing was no exception. He couldn’t face the coming-of-age ceremony or his former classmates. So, he dropped out shortly after.”

“Dropped out?” For them, who spent their entire awakened lives in the academy, where would they go after dropping out?

The principal took out an old, dusty booklet from the top shelf, which was covered in a thick layer of dust. He gently wiped away the dust and said, “This is the graduation yearbook of their class. This one belonged to him, but he never came back to claim it.”

The principal turned to the first page, and the group photo on it was even more unbearable to look at than the wall of memorial photos Ling Xiao had seen in the library. In the picture, each person was holding a picture frame, and inside the frame was a black and white photo of another person. Their graduation photo could only be presented in this manner.

The principal pointed to the only boy on the side who wasn’t holding any picture. “This is Ling Xing. The photo was taken the day before he dropped out. The next day he left, and among the people in this picture, only a few are still alive.”

“What about Ling Xing?” Ling Xiao asked eagerly, “Is he still alive?”

After a long silence, the principal slowly shook his head.

“After leaving school, he went to live in a church. Occasionally, I’d hear about him. It seemed he had moved on from the shadows of his past and was doing quite well, but he never reached adulthood.”

“How did he die?”

“He was executed.”

Ling Xiao was shocked. “Executed?”

“For committing a crime.”

“What crime?”

“Treason.”

Ling Xiao was speechless in surprise. He distinctly remembered Yao Tai saying that no one had been executed in Nightmare Hall for many years. Treason was the highest crime in Tianxiu and an absolutely unforgivable offense.

“The news was sensational at the time, but by the time the truth came out, a long time had passed. I never had the chance to see him one last time.”

The principal sighed and closed the yearbook.

“That’s all I know about him. If you want to learn more, you’ll have to go to the church from back then. Since this was his, you might as well take it with you.”

Ling Xiao left the principal’s office, clutching the yearbook, and called Ying Feng to inform him of his whereabouts.

“I need to visit a nearby church, and I might return late.”

“Why are you going to the church?”

“To deliver something for the principal,” he replied, withholding some of the details.

Ying Feng, not entirely trusting Ling Xiao’s driving skills after that accident, said, “Did you forget what happened yesterday?”

Ling Xiao sighed. “Yesterday was an exception. I’m fine today.”

“Just wait. I’ll come to pick you up.”

When Ying Feng arrived, Ling Xiao was sitting in the passenger seat, holding an old yearbook.

“What’s that?”

“Oh, it’s what the principal asked me to bring.”

Ying Feng didn’t press further and directed their vehicle to the church. Neither of them had ever visited before. The church, where Ling Xing used to live, wasn’t big but had a beautiful garden filled with various plants—some native to Tianxiu, others from different planets. It seemed as if exotic plants from different planets were all gathered in this small courtyard.

They followed the path, passing through the courtyard, and entered the church, where a tall statue of a deity hung prominently in front. Stained glass of various colors surrounded them, blocking the intense sunlight. Only slender rays of light that penetrated from small windows behind the deity retained a golden hue.

Ying Feng had never been here before, nor had he ever been conveyed the will of God. Yet, when he took his first step into this place, he felt a tranquility in his soul, an indescribable enchantment. All the restless elements within his spirit were soothed. In this world, there was no longer anything worth anger, sadness, or hatred. What remained was only peace, hope, and beauty.

He felt all this in silence, as time seemed to slow. It was no longer one second after another, but rather dust dancing leisurely in the sunlight. It felt like an hourglass tilted at a sixty-degree angle or the steady ticking of a clock where someone had gently turned on a faucet, leaving a small gap for time to drip out slowly. Past, present, and future all converged in the present moment. The person in front of him also seemed to be standing still for a long time, as if relishing this elongated moment.

Ying Feng suddenly felt that Ling Xiao had been still for too long.

“Ling Xiao.” He called out.

“What?” Ling Xiao turned abruptly with a serene expression on his face that Ying Feng had never seen before. The corners of his mouth were slightly raised in a genuine smile, one that was emitted from within without any pretense. This smile reached his eyes.

The rays of light passing through the window panes, bypassing the deities, shone against him in the opposite direction. Half of that smile was obscured in the haze, yet due to their extraordinary vision, every detail was captured vividly.

Fragments of his soul that had been scattered due to relaxation, in this instant, suddenly came together with great intensity, giving Ying Feng a strong jolt. A long, long time ago, someone seemed to have smiled at him in this manner, saying these words to him:

If you can’t understand human emotions, at least try to believe in God. God will love you just as He loves others. As long as you believe in Him, His love will reach your heart, allowing you, like any other person, to learn how to love.

Chapter 50

Ying Feng slightly regretted not using his psychic abilities to locate Ling Xiao. He dialed Ling Xiao’s communicator but got no response. Just as he was about to search for him in the sequence they used last time, he ran into a classmate downstairs.

“Ying Feng, I just saw Ling Xiao heading to the training hall. I called out to him, but he didn’t stop. Did something happen?”

Hearing this, Ying Feng immediately headed towards the training hall. His classmate wondered if the two were so diligent as to train early in the morning.

When Ying Feng arrived at the training hall, he indeed saw Ling Xiao aggressively fighting several robots. His communicator and coat were casually thrown aside, so it was no wonder he didn’t hear the call. Ying Feng quickly neutralized each robot. But when they were deactivated, Ling Xiao then aimed at the newly joined opponent, launching a barrage of punches and kicks.

His speed was faster than usual, making it nearly impossible for an average person to track his moves. Yet, from Ying Feng’s perspective, he was too slow. Although Ling Xiao was faster, Ying Feng saw every move clearly, easily blocking and countering each one. Eventually, he spotted a nearly imperceptible opening, quickly immobilizing Ling Xiao’s arms and throwing him to the ground.

Ling Xiao, stunned, sprang back up, looking at his hands in amazement.

“Why could I strike you this time?” The last time he couldn’t even touch Ying Feng.

Having accumulated extensive knowledge about blood contracts recently, Ying Feng explained, “Last time you wanted to hurt me, this time it was just a sparring match.”

“So it’s related to my intentions?” Ling Xiao realized. “It’s a programmed judgment, isn’t it?”

His mood became complicated. “Ever since I found out I might not be human, things that didn’t make sense before now do. Maybe even my current thoughts aren’t my own.”

Ying Feng didn’t want to delve into this. “Didn’t we agree you’d inform me wherever you go?”

“Isn’t that just for nighttime?” Does this person have some kind of code inside him that makes him neurotic whenever I’m out of his sight?

“From now on, you need to report at all times,” Ying Feng ordered firmly.

Ling Xiao was now sure that Ying Feng had such a “code” in him. He secretly decided he would ask Heng He to remove it next week.

Realizing that Ying Feng, too, was a “non-human entity controlled by code”, Ling Xiao became less bothered by his domineering nature, blaming it on a system bug.

“I woke up feeling extremely energized and restless,” he said, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “Since the system allows us to spar, let’s practice.”

Without waiting for a response, he threw a punch, which Ying Feng easily caught. The two then continued to spar enthusiastically around the hall, enjoying the feeling of being evenly matched after a long time.

Even though Ying Feng’s strength had vastly improved compared to before, he still went all out when facing Ling Xiao’s attacks. Ling Xiao clearly understood Ying Feng’s intention of giving guidance, but Ying Feng’s attitude reassured him that he wasn’t being underestimated. Hence, Ling Xiao didn’t develop an inferiority complex despite the gap in their powers.

However, without feeling inferior, every enhancement in Ying Feng’s strength and speed reminded Ling Xiao that Ying Feng had benefited from an added boost to his abilities. This naturally led him to think of the coming-of-age ceremony, the way he was treated during his turbulent period, and the punches that were only half-executed and couldn’t move freely.

With frustration in his heart, the next punch he threw was unconsciously mixed with distracting thoughts. Before it even landed on the opponent, he was forced to stop. Following closely, Ying Feng’s fist landed squarely on Ling Xiao’s lower abdomen, causing Ling Xiao to stagger backward several steps.

“What were you thinking?” Ying Feng saw right through him.

Pushing those thoughts aside, Ling Xiao raised his fists again. “Let’s continue.”

Ling Xiao’s energy seemed inexhaustible. They sparred from morning till noon. Even the physically superior Ying Feng began to feel tired.

“Enough.” He restrained Ling Xiao’s movements. “We’ve been sparring all morning. You should take a break.”

Ling Xiao wanted to say he wasn’t tired, but it seemed a bit awkward to keep dragging Ying Feng into a fight. He rubbed his nose. “Alright, let’s go.”

Finally, Ying Feng managed to get him out of the training hall. They hadn’t even reached the dormitory when Ling Xiao suddenly let out an excited shout.

“What’s wrong?” Ying Feng didn’t understand what had excited him.

Ling Xiao pointed excitedly at the roadside. “Flying Shark!”

Ying Feng was speechless. That conspicuous vehicle was parked right there. Did he actually fly out of the dormitory in the morning?

In a flash, Ling Xiao dashed to the car, glancing left and right. Seeing no one paying attention, he cautiously touched its aerodynamic body. The touch seemed irresistible to him.

Why was there a Flying Shark parked downstairs? And in his favorite yellow? When this model was first released, he had sneakily drooled over its advertisement for a long time.

Unable to resist its allure, Ling Xiao whispered to Ying Feng, “Keep an eye out for me.”

“For what?”

“If you see anyone who looks like the owner, let me know.”

With that, he pushed himself into the car.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, Ling Xiao felt a rush of excitement. This was the car of his dreams. The moment he gripped the steering wheel, a wave of happiness enveloped him. He imagined the car was his own, and he started to drive it on the road. At this moment, he was driving it along the coastal road, feeling the sea breeze with his hair flowing, and even picturing most of the passing scenery.

As he was lost in this delightful fantasy, he heard Ying Feng’s cool voice from behind. “The owner is here.”

Startled, Ling Xiao quickly turned around. “Where?”

“Here.”

A shadow approached, and Ling Xiao ducked instinctively, only to realize it was a car key with the same Flying Shark logo.

Ling Xiao: “…”

Is this a joke?

“It’s your car, bought with your money. No need to be surprised.”

Ling Xiao wasn’t just surprised; he was utterly shocked.

“My money? How could I have that much money? Last month, I couldn’t even afford food.”

“The soul stone you got from killing the Kui was given to me by Major Fu Yao.”

It took Ling Xiao a moment to remember, but he thought assets from illicit gains had been confiscated by the military long ago.

“So this car is mine? Is this for real?” Initially thinking his dream had ended, Ling Xiao realized it had come true, making his reality seem surreal.

In disbelief, he pressed the car key. All the dashboard lights lit up, confirming its reality.

“You can also start it with your terminal,” Ying Feng reminded him from behind.

Are you kidding? Starting it with a key is way cooler!

If Ling Xiao had been on cloud nine before, now he felt like he was doing somersaults in the sky. The feeling of a dream lover telling him “I’m yours” couldn’t be more joyous.

“Ahaha,” Ling Xiao gloated, unsure how high to lift his tail. “I’m going for a drive!”

Coincidentally, Ying Feng received a message from the instructor, summoning him.

“Wait for me to return. Then you can go.”

But Ling Xiao couldn’t wait. “Go ahead. I’ll just drive around here.”

Doubting Ling Xiao’s promise, Ying Feng saw him floor the accelerator and zoom away. The Flying Shark lived up to its name, leaving without a trace.

Helpless, Ying Feng went to see the instructor, who had prepared past entrance exam content for the Royal Sky Academy, even detailing every question. Distracted by worries of Ling Xiao causing trouble, Ying Feng’s fears were confirmed when a distress call came.

“Ying Feng, come quick! The Tianxiu people can’t restrain Ling Xiao anymore!”

After explaining to the instructor, Ying Feng rushed to the scene, encountering an aftermath resembling a hurricane’s path. Everyone he met complained bitterly.

“Ling Xiao’s drag racing around the campus!”

“Ling Xiao’s drifting around the academic building!”

“Ling Xiao wrecked the main gate’s green belt!”

“Ling Xiao messed up my hair!”

Ying Feng could only block everything. When he finally saw the culprit, the latter was flying the Flying Shark in aircraft form, skillfully drawing multiple figure-eights in the air. Not far away, a police hovercraft was hovering, shouting at him from a distance.

“The owner of the vehicle ahead. I command you to stop immediately, or we will use special measures!”

The Flying Shark showed no intention of stopping. Instead, it tumbled in the air several times, then soared up high. After reaching a certain altitude, it dived straight down, looking like it would crash into the police vehicle.

Ying Feng’s forehead twitched. Without thinking, he applied psychic control on Ling Xiao, swiftly hitting the emergency stop button. Flying Shark stopped just a centimeter away from the police vehicle, scaring the officers inside into a cold sweat.

Ling Xiao, piloting the craft, begrudgingly landed on the ground. The police vehicle followed, and an officer jumped out, shouting at Ling Xiao.

“Didn’t you hear me when I told you to stop? Do you know you’ve seriously obstructed aerial traffic? Confess, have you been drinking?”

Ling Xiao, knowing he was in the wrong, hung his head. “No.”

“I’m sorry.” Ying Feng stepped forward. “It’s my lack of discipline.”

The officer then noticed Ying Feng. “And who are you?”

“I’m his Qizhu. He didn’t drink, but he lost a lot of blood in an accident yesterday. That might have caused some mental agitation.”

“You are mainly to blame for this. If he’s agitated, he should stay inside, not cause trouble outside. As his Qizhu, how could you not watch over him?”

Ying Feng lowered his eyes. “Yes, I’ll be more careful.”

The officer took out a card reader. “Being mentally agitated is no excuse. Pay the fine!”

Ying Feng and Ling Xiao went back the same way they came, compensating for the trees, roadblocks, and greenery that were damaged. By the time they returned to the academy, a quarter of the money Ling Xiao made from selling his blood was gone.

“Have you learned your lesson?” Ying Feng asked grumpily.

Ling Xiao mumbled something under his breath.

“No more driving today! And you’re not going out. Just follow me back!”

Ling Xiao, knowing he was wrong, obediently followed. However, it didn’t take long for him to forget the unpleasant experience, enthusiastically describing the sensation of piloting the Flying Shark.

By the time they reached the dormitory, he had been talking for half an hour without showing signs of stopping.

Ying Feng, who naturally hated noise, was at his wits’ end. Finally, after Ling Xiao uttered some flamboyant phrase, Ying Feng, without warning, pulled him into a deep kiss, intending to calm him down.

Sure enough, Ling Xiao fell silent immediately. After the kiss, he looked up at Ying Feng with big, innocent eyes. Ying Feng sighed. “Finally, some peace.”

Ling Xiao, lying on the bed and looking up at Ying Feng, blinked like a pitiable little animal. Seeing his expression, Ying Feng felt a pang of sympathy.

Seeing Ling Xiao’s discontent, Ying Feng reluctantly ordered a virtual driving set online. When Ling Xiao saw Ying Feng retrieving it from the transporter, his eyes lit up.

The effects of Ying Feng’s kiss wore off quickly, and Ling Xiao soon regained his energy. With the VR glasses on and holding the steering wheel, he not only mimicked the motion of the vehicle but also made engine noises. Ying Feng, who felt a bit sorry for him earlier, started regretting his decision.

He had thought of leaving several times, but every time he remembered the instructions from Heng He, he forcibly held himself back. Ling Xiao’s excitement lasted from morning till night, showing no signs of calming down even before bedtime.

Ying Feng had a mentally exhausting day. His emotions swung between letting Ling Xiao be and wishing for his silence. This internal conflict reached its peak when Ling Xiao finished three hundred push-ups and began doing sit-ups. Just like what the police had said, even if one was overly excited, it shouldn’t be an excuse for such behavior.

Right when Ling Xiao was on his two hundred and fifty-first sit-up, he was unexpectedly held down by someone and couldn’t get up. This familiar sensation made him sense that something bad was about to happen.

Ying Feng, who was on the verge of collapse, gritted his teeth and pressed him. “Since you are so energetic, let me help you vent.”

Ling Xiao was stunned for two seconds and then began to resist with his teeth and claws open. Ying Feng could not allow him to refuse. He easily pressed the person on the bed with one hand and took him off with the other.

Ling Xiao, who was stripped naked, struggled desperately. “The big lecherous demon! Let me go!”

The big lecherous demon didn’t listen and tried to spread Ling Xiao’s legs apart to make him submit. However, Ling Xiao resisted with all his might, managing to escape from his grasp. He quickly rolled off the bed and dashed to a corner.

“You can’t force me every time! We have three chapters of the agreement; it is inhumane for you to do this!”

Ying Feng, who had been tortured all day, had lost all his humanity; only animal instinct remained. He stepped out of bed and started a chase game with the naked Ling Xiao. While Ling Xiao wanted to avoid him, he also wanted to protect the key parts. The bedroom area was so large that he was embarrassed for a while.

There was a knock on the door outside. Ying Feng hesitated and walked towards the door. If the door was opened, the entire bedroom would be visible at a glance. Ling Xiao also flew over and hid behind the door in desperation. Ying Feng glared at him and opened the door vigorously.

The person outside was taken aback by the momentum of opening the door, and then they saw that Ying Feng’s clothes were a little messy and his body was obviously full of fire. There was no shadow of Ling Xiao in the room at a glance, and he didn’t dare to take a closer look, so he hurriedly handed over the things in his hand.

“Ling Xiao left it in my dormitory before, and I will send it back to him.”

Ying Feng took it and said, “Is there anything else?””

“No, no more.” He slipped away, and there was a heavy sound of closing the door behind him.

Ying Feng threw the things in his hand aside without looking at it. When Ling Xiao saw the door closed, he had to run away again. Unfortunately, he didn’t move as fast as Ying Feng, so he was caught and pressed against the door.

“What are you doing? Don’t you want to be here…”

Ying Feng didn’t have any superfluous movements or nonsense. He took out his angry “weapon” and thrust it in. Ling Xiao, who had just been flailing around, almost instantly became honest, like a tamed beast that had been anesthetized.

It was hard for Ling Xiao to describe what it felt like. When Ying Feng entered his body, all his bones became limp, as if they had lost their support, turning him into a boneless animal mass. Just by moving his crotch, Ying Feng created such a sensitive connection that it was shocking.

He slumped on the door panel. The reason he could still stand and didn’t fall was that the biggest help came from Ying Feng’s arm and lower body, which were immobilizing him. He also had to rely on the other party’s strength to reduce the burden on his weak legs.

“You cheated. It’s a foul!” Ling Xiao refused to give in. He always felt that he and Ying Feng should decide the outcome by fighting. Even if he couldn’t beat him now, he had the right to learn equally, but Ying Feng could easily make him submit in this way. The means were truly despicable.

While it was a truly despicable method, his body just couldn’t resist, allowing Ying Feng to thrust forward unimpeded. He even “pinched” to welcome him, which only made him blush and feel more ashamed.

Ying Feng unceremoniously washed away the complaining words behind him. When Ling Xiao realized that he groaned far more often than meaningful words, he bit his lips angrily. However, the fact was that the harsh words were gone, but the groans had not decreased at all. The sound waves overflowed through his teeth and corners of his mouth one after another, touched the door panel, and bounced back to his face, hitting him in pain.

Ling Xiao was already eager to escape, and Ying Feng was still adding fuel to his fire. Seeing that he didn’t resist much, he freed up a hand and held Ling Xiao’s weakness with bad intentions.

Now Ling Xiao had surrendered completely. His legs softened, and he almost fell to his knees. Fortunately, Ying Feng had another hand to support him, but his body still completely tilted to one side.

Ling Xiao trembled excitedly a few times as Ying Feng fiddled with him. He was trying to hold back from letting himself vent too easily so as to make it less embarrassing, but it wasn’t easy. Any touch by the Qizhu was like being endowed with magic powers. The pleasure it brought was far superior to any experience that masturbation could achieve. The degree of stimulation was probably only experienced by a person who was the Qizi.

The clever Ying Feng saw through Ling Xiao’s persistence at a glance. He wanted to vent Ling Xiao’s excess energy as soon as possible, but after seeing this, he changed his mind.

“Don’t you want to go seven times a night?”

Ling Xiao was shaking all over when he recalled that night. “If you…dare to…this time…I will…haha… maxed out your card…mm…”

He couldn’t even breathe, and his intermittent voice was mixed with a lot of groans, which sounded really “quite” shocking.

Ying Feng agreed decisively. “Okay, as you wish.”

He touched Ling Xiao’s tip with his thumb, then rubbed it a few more times as if nothing had happened. Ling Xiao was originally on the verge of cumming, and if Ying Feng had stroked him a few more times, he would have properly sent him into a climax. But at this moment, the hole of his desire seemed to be blocked, and he couldn’t vent it out.

“Ah…” Ling Xiao lowered his head uncomfortably. “What did you do?”

“Didn’t you ask for it?” Ying Feng released Ling Xiao’s penis generously and turned to tease the already firm dots on his chest. At the same time, he accelerated the frequency of his thrust. Wave after wave of pleasure washed over Ling Xiao. The distance from a certain value was always infinitely close, but he couldn’t reach it. The persistent critical state made him almost crazy.

Even if Ling Xiao’s brain was hypoxic, he guessed that Ying Feng had just done something to his body, causing him to be unable to ejaculate. What he couldn’t figure out was; it was only a few days before Ying Feng became the Qizhu; why could he master the abilities in bed so skillfully. Even if he was the top student, this was a bit too much.

The steady stream of pleasure from behind gradually became a burden. Ling Xiao’s lower body swelled so hard that he couldn’t hold it in. At this time, never mind seven times a night; even if Ying Feng proposed seventy times, he would respond impulsively. He gritted his teeth tightly, as he didn’t want to say anything he regretted when he couldn’t bear it.

There was another knock on the door a few inches away. For Ling Xiao, who was pressed against the door and being fucked hard, the sound was like hitting the depths of his eardrum. His whole body stiffened, and Ying Feng slowed down. He thrust in and out, one after another, while paying attention to the movement outside. Although his speed slowed down, his hand subconsciously held Ling Xiao’s penis again while his thumb smeared back and forth along the groves. Ling Xiao lowered his head uncomfortably, his teeth almost biting his lower lip, but he didn’t dare to make the slightest sound.

The classmate outside the door was surprised. After he returned to the bedroom, he found that there were still things left behind, so he returned and knocked on the door again, but there was no movement in the bedroom, where there were still people just now. It was getting late, so where could these two people go?

“Ying Feng, are you still there?” he asked as he knocked. “I have something else to drop off.”

Ling Xiao’s teeth were pried open, and Ying Feng’s fingers slid in. He wanted to bite down like this, but when he thought of his out-of-line behavior after biting Ying Feng’s arm that day, he had to forcibly hold back again and let Ying Feng run amok.

The classmate knocked for a moment, but seeing no response, he mumbled, turned around, and left. The two people in the room remained motionless. When they heard the footsteps walking away, Ying Feng pulled Ling Xiao away from the door and pressed him down in a kneeling position on the sofa. Ling Xiao’s nerves were so tight just now, and he was dizzy because Ying Feng had blocked his exit. He didn’t even make a move to resist, and he was invaded again. This time, he couldn’t bear it and had to call out.

“Damn it, release me!”

Ying Feng acted as if he didn’t hear anything, and Ling Xiao was almost going mad. He gripped the back of the chair tightly with his nails, leaving ten deep indentations on the cushion. Because his body had been pent-up for too long, his legs embarrassingly began to tremble. He had to use his upper limbs to support himself. Fortunately, Ying Feng was holding onto his waist, preventing him from sliding down.

Every time Ying Feng collided, he carried enough power to push him to the top, but the highest point seemed to weave a huge net covering the sky and the sun, ruthlessly intercepting him. He was like a drowning person being sunk every time he approached the surface of the water with barely enough oxygen that it created the illusion as if fragments of his soul were beginning to dissipate.

The surging desire ran rampantly wild within him, finding no outlet. Wherever it went, it caused a tremor. He could even hear the sound of his own teeth chattering. Ying Feng noticed the intense shaking of Ling Xiao, so he turned him over to take a closer look. Ling Xiao’s bangs were completely wet from sweat, neatly sticking to his forehead. Underneath those bangs, a pair of eyes that were always sharp and spirited now appeared almost hazy, yet they stared directly at where Ying Feng was, as if accusing him of his transgressions.

Ying Feng reached out to brush away his bangs, and as he did, he leaned close to his ear, gently pinching the cartilage of Ling Xiao’s earlobe. To his surprise, Ling Xiao shivered all over.

Unable to resist, Ying Feng pressed his lips against it. Out of nowhere, Ling Xiao summoned the strength to suddenly jump up, turning Ying Feng’s face to the side.

“Don’t!” Fear was evident in his eyes. Although instances like this were rare, Ling Xiao had keenly discerned Ying Feng’s peculiar preferences. Whenever Ying Feng no longer thrust into him with brutal indifference but instead, as he was doing now, enveloped his earlobe with an expression and actions filled with utmost tenderness, it was a harbinger of Ying Feng’s impending climax. Once Ying Feng reached the peak, the stimulation Ling Xiao would experience would multiply manifold. If, under such circumstances, he couldn’t find a release, Ling Xiao could almost foresee his own inevitable demise.

Ying Feng’s prelude was interrupted, and he bit his lower lip in dissatisfaction, his narrowed eyes emitting a dangerous glint. For the sake of his own life, Ling Xiao remained resolute and uncompromising, desperately covering both of his ears. “If you don’t release me, I won’t let you touch it!”

Ying Feng’s control circled deep within his psyche, and with just one thought, he could force Ling Xiao to remove his hands. However, at the critical moment, it was Ling Xiao’s unwavering expression when proposing a deal that dominated Ying Feng’s memories.

Ling Xiao felt Ying Feng’s hand leave his waist and then held his swollen penis. Just such an action made him curl up his toes with excitement, and his legs tightly clamped Ying Feng’s crotch. His hands could no longer support him, and he hung down weakly. Whatever Ying Feng wanted to do to him was now as easy as taking something out of a bag.

Ying Feng teased Ling Xiao twice, this time biting his ear at an unstoppable speed and almost at the same time rubbing Ling Xiao’s tip. The viscous liquid that had been accumulating for a long time gushed out unstoppably, like an explosion. His insides no longer shrank rhythmically as before but continued to tighten, abruptly bringing Ying Feng to orgasm simultaneously. The pleasure the two felt was conveyed through the connection of their souls, duplicated, superimposed, and doubled. Even Ying Feng let out a rare, muffled groan.

When the white light in front of Ying Feng’s eyes slowly dissipated, he opened his eyes and saw that it was indeed Ling Xiao who had closed his eyes tightly and tilted his head to one side. He had fainted from the excessive excitement. Knowing that this method was so effective, why did he endure this monkey all day?

The amount of Ling Xiao’s several orgasms accumulated into one big ejaculation. The amount he shot was staggering. Ying Feng’s hands and chest were completely covered, and he kept shooting until it became dry. Ling Xiao was still panting. Ying Feng waited for him to completely stop before he wiped away the sticky white turbidity. He then carried Ling Xiao, who was still passed out, back to bed.

Ling Xiao had fallen asleep, but Ying Feng wasn’t sleepy anymore. He began to re-read the book he had borrowed. The practical application of suppressing desires seemed to be very effective. He wondered if the other content in the book would be just as effective. Thinking about the long-term plans of the military, where there would be a day of heightened arousal every week, the knowledge points in the book would undoubtedly need to be practiced. Ling Xiao shivered in his sleep, perhaps having a dream, and instinctively snuggled closer to Ying Feng. Ying Feng extended his right hand, placing it on Ling Xiao’s shoulder. It looked as if he was holding Ling Xiao. Only then did Ling Xiao sleep soundly. With one hand holding Ling Xiao and the other holding the book, Ying Feng read quietly. This bedroom, which had been tormented all day, finally welcomed a long-lost tranquility.

The computer screen of Heng He flashed, and he rushed to it anxiously. As expected, he saw a message from the “mysterious friend”.

[How’s the progress?]

[Very smooth.]

This mysterious friend had suddenly appeared a few days ago, possessing vast amounts of classified information only accessible by state officials. Not only did he know about Yue Ying, but he also provided a detailed report on how to awaken him, including specifics on blood types.

Heng He initially thought it was a prank from a colleague. But after studying the report, he was astonished to find that it was precisely what they had been looking for. The strategy was solid, leaving no room for doubt. The level of expertise was far beyond his own.

The only condition the other party proposed for continued cooperation was to hide his existence from the military. After some hesitation, Heng He’s passion for science overcame everything, and he submitted the report under his own name. The reason for successfully matching the genes with Ling Xiao was easily explained; he had recently received treatment at the military’s medical station, and his detailed records were in the database.

The superior’s response was immediate execution. The very next day, Ling Xiao was brought before him. The first blood sample was successfully transfused into Yue Ying without any adverse reactions.

[Your plan is flawless; there’s no reason for it to fail.]

Heng He praised and in his mind, a thought flashed indistinctly about the true identity of this person.

[I think I know who you are!]

There was a man who once gave a public lecture at his school. Since then, Heng He had been deeply impressed by this person’s knowledge, experience, and capabilities. He was a genius in the scientific community and an idol for students like him. Even if this person was later wanted by the state and went into exile, it couldn’t change Heng He’s admiration for him. For such a perfect plan, only this person could achieve it!

[Is that so?]

The other party replied.

[Who am I?]

With excitement, Heng He typed out each word.

[You are the former chief researcher of the base, my idol, Tai Yin!]

Chapter 49

Being surrounded by a group of people with expressionless faces wasn’t a pleasant experience. Using Ling Xiao’s body as cover, Ying Feng secretly pulled up the terminal’s shortcut keypad.

“Give it up,” the officer saw through at a glance. “There’s a signal block here. Oh, by the way, the headquarters just received a message. An unidentified flying object has been spotted in the nearby space. Major General Fu Yao has been dispatched to inspect it. So, I suggest you save any unnecessary thoughts and focus on the issue at hand.”

“No need to think.” Ling Xiao’s voice regained its calm. “I’m willing to accept your terms, but only for personal reasons.”

“Really?” Heng He was overjoyed.

“I hope that person will wake up so I can find out the true nature of our relationship. That’s why I agreed to join this plan.”

“No matter the reason, as long as our goals align, we’re partners in collaboration.” Heng He reached out his hand happily. “Welcome aboard.”

The officer showed a satisfied smile but didn’t miss observing Ying Feng. Ying Feng still stared at him with a hostile expression, but in the officer’s eyes, it was merely the futile struggle of a rebellious child expressing dissatisfaction only with his gaze.

Growing impatient, Heng He asked, “Have you passed your critical period? Only the blood taken from you when you’re in perfect health can be used by the person inside.”

“Yesterday was the last day. It should be fine, right?”

“Then that’s good. Why not start now? The sooner we act, the sooner he’ll wake up.”

Ling Xiao had no objections. Heng He eagerly took him to draw blood, with Ying Feng and the officer following and waiting outside.

The two stood in silence for a moment until the officer initiated. “You harbor a lot of hostility towards me, young man.”

Ying Feng looked up at the adult, who stood a full head taller than him. The innate pressure emanating from him was characteristic of a Tianxiu person. His repulsion towards him didn’t stem from differences but from similarities in their personalities.

“I believe every word Dr. Heng He says,” he suddenly began.

“Oh?” The officer listened with interest.

“I also believe that’s truly what he thinks.”

“Go on.”

“But it can’t be what you think. He’s just being used by you.”

The officer smiled. “Bold speculation.”

Ying Feng continued calmly, “If the coming-of-age ceremony is abolished, the Qizhu can’t draw power from their Qizi. The combat capability of the Tianxiu people would be greatly reduced. The military would never allow that.”

“You’re smart,” the officer praised. “From the moment you entered the interrogation room, you’ve been impressing me. Dr. Heng He’s mind is sharp, but mentally, he’s always childlike. The coming-of-age ceremony is the legacy left to us by the founders of our system. It allows us to multiply our strength overnight. Superior people become even more superior. This is what we seek.”

“I’ve been told that Tianxiu people can’t leave this land due to the existence of a soul tether. When the doctor mentioned it earlier, I realized, this must be your true purpose. You want to awaken the person inside to use them to gain access and remove the soul tether. That way, the military can wage wars on even more distant planets and make more people submit to our rule.”

Clapping, the officer responded, “Brilliant. I’m growing more fond of you. Understanding this makes you—no, us—the true Tianxiu people. We desire conquest, we yearn for combat, to trample weaker nations beneath our feet. As a Qizhu, you must know the feeling of controlling someone. If you multiply that sensation, it becomes endless satisfaction. Unfortunately, due to the increasing influence of religious forces in recent years, many of our brethren have been brainwashed by their distorted teachings, thinking peace is more important than war, truly tarnishing our race.”

“Have you considered that if Dr. Heng He knew your real purpose, he’d drop out of the plan?”

“As partners now, I don’t mind telling you. Aside from your Qizi, no one in this plan is irreplaceable.”

“But I can also use my abilities to prevent Ling Xiao from accepting your terms.”

“But you didn’t.”

“Because if I did, you’d have us reincarnated without hesitation. Controlling a naive newborn is much easier than an adult with their own thoughts.”

The officer admitted without shame. “The drawback is that it will take twenty years for him to awaken again. If possible, we certainly hope to avoid such unpleasantness.”

After a pause, he continued, “Your relationship with your Qizi is quite unusual; it’s more like comrades in arms than spouses and more about loyalty than romance. I have some understanding of the origin of your bond. If the core of the program could be modified and the established blood pact could be annulled, would you be willing to end the bond between you?”

Ying Feng did not answer this question.

“If you don’t want to speak, it’s fine,” he said. “But one thing is certain: the coming-of-age ceremony can never be canceled. This is not my belief, but the country’s. You are a promising young man. When you rise to my rank, you will be entrusted with the same mission.”

“What about Major General Fu Yao?”

“He will also be entrusted, of course. He should have known all this before you, but now you have surpassed him. He, you, and I—we walk the same path. Sooner or later, one of us will succeed the other, continuing the Tianxius’ great work without end.”

He extended his hand. “I haven’t introduced myself yet. I am Long Yin, and I welcome you to join us.”

On the other side of the door, Heng He extracted nearly half of Ling Xiao’s blood volume.

“Since it’s your first time, I tried to reduce the amount collected. Once you get used to it, we’ll gradually increase the amount,” he said.

Lying on the bed and feeling dizzy from the excessive blood loss, Ling Xiao thought about how much blood might be taken under normal conditions. Watching the machine simultaneously extract and purify the blood, he couldn’t help but ask, “What’s that?”

“It’s the final product that can be accepted by the recipient. Your blood is too stimulating for him and must be processed before use.”

Ling Xiao was shocked. “You drew so much blood from me and only extracted so little. How much blood is needed to awaken him?”

“Uh,” Heng He seemed a bit embarrassed. “That’s why the plan will take a long time. There will be a week’s interval between sessions for you to recover. Oh, there are some things I need to discuss with your Qizhu.”

Calling the two from outside, Ying Feng entered and immediately saw Ling Xiao lying pale and weak on the bed. He had just passed his dangerous period, but now he was beaten back to his original form, looking even more serious than before.

“His condition doesn’t look good right now,” Heng He began, understanding that no Qizhu would be happy seeing their Qizi like this. “But don’t worry, our regenerative ability is strong. After a night’s rest, he’ll be refreshed, even lively.”

“How lively?”

Caught off guard by the question, Heng He tilted his head. “You’ll understand once you see.”

Heng He escorted them to the elevator. “I forgot to mention, given his current state, he shouldn’t be flying. It might make him feel dizzy and nauseous. It’s unavoidable for this journey; you’ll have to take care of him.”

As predicted, shortly after the aircraft took off, Ling Xiao began to show signs of discomfort. Despite his efforts to hide it, it was evident.

Long Yin observed them with interest. “If I were you, I wouldn’t let him suffer alone.”

Without a word, Ying Feng pulled Ling Xiao close. Ling Xiao, too weak to resist, rested against Ying Feng’s legs. Long Yin nodded approvingly but couldn’t help teasing, “You’re already a good comrade, but as a spouse, you still have a long way to go.”

Finally landing, Ling Xiao was adamant about not flying again. Ying Feng had to take a land vehicle. Ling Xiao, while still weak, seemed to feel better than before. Not long into the journey, he leaned against Ying Feng.

This gesture reminded Ying Feng of half a month ago, when they spent the night in a medical building’s corridor. For the first time, he shared his biggest secret and, unlike his usual self, didn’t push Ling Xiao away when he unknowingly leaned in during sleep.

The personal terminal on his wrist vibrated, prompting him to check his messages.

There were two unread messages. The first one was from Fu Yao: [Out on an urgent mission, be careful.]

The second one came from an unknown number, but it had a signature: [Blood donation subsidy has been transferred to your card. Recharge your energy to get ready for the next time. I know if I didn’t write this, you wouldn’t think of it. — Long Yin]

Ying Feng closed the interface with a stern face. He had never given his contact to Long Yin. It wouldn’t be difficult for the military to find it. However, the content of the message was simply meddling.

He checked his card balance. A few days ago, Ling Xiao had spent a lot recklessly, and now a large sum of money appeared suddenly. Realizing that this was the money from Ling Xiao “selling blood”, he didn’t feel like spending it.

The smoothly operating train suddenly jolted. Due to inertia, Ling Xiao’s head fell from his shoulder. Ying Feng quickly caught him, placing him back in position. Ling Xiao remained asleep throughout the incident.

It wasn’t until the train reached the station that Ling Xiao was groggily awakened by Ying Feng and followed him shakily. There was a considerable distance from the station to the academy. Ying Feng didn’t want to keep looking back but worried a few times that Ling Xiao might faint on the road. If they had to make this trip every week, it would be quite troublesome. With this in mind, he made up his mind.

As soon as Ling Xiao returned to the dormitory, he slept heavily, even more so than a few days ago. Taking this opportunity, Ying Feng logged onto the Tianyuan Network.

The car dealership was located in an area only adults could enter. Nowadays, vehicles weren’t just limited to those that run on the ground. They had vehicles that could fly in the sky and dive underwater, all for sale.

Many adults liked to buy an economical single-person flying vehicle for transportation. The owner had dealt with many customers like Ying Feng, and with his rich experience, he could quickly identify their needs.

“Welcome! We have the latest single-person flying vehicles here, stylish and affordable. Students can also opt for installment payments.”

Ying Feng declined his offer immediately. “I want one for domestic use.”

“For two people? Check out this model. It has a co-pilot seat and is quite affordable.”

Ying Feng glanced at it. “Too small. I need one with enough space for at least one person to lie down.”

The owner looked at him curiously. “We do have those, but they are generally purchased by people with private residences due to their size.”

“Is it dual-purpose, for land and air?”

“The dual-purpose ones are much more expensive than those just for flying. Nowadays, aerial transportation is very convenient, so there’s no real need for a dual-purpose vehicle. Most people prefer flying-only vehicles.”

“No, I want a dual-purpose one. Based on the requirements I mentioned, recommend a few to me.”

The owner introduced a few with skepticism, wondering if Ying Feng might be a researcher from a competitor. He quoted the original prices without offering any discounts.

However, none of the introduced vehicles appealed to Ying Feng. After browsing the shop, he was attracted by a particularly stylish vehicle on display.

“What are the specifications of this vehicle?”

The owner was convinced that if Ying Feng wasn’t a commercial spy, he was just a curious kid.

“The Flying Shark is the most luxurious civilian vehicle available on the market today. As the name suggests, it’s a triple-purpose vehicle for land, air, and sea. It can transform into a flying vehicle, a race car, a yacht, and a submarine. It can carry up to six people, and the back seat is spacious enough to lie down.”

He went on to describe the vehicle in glowing terms, finally announcing the price, expecting to stun the young man. However, Ying Feng seemed satisfied.

“I’ll take it.”

The owner thought he was joking. “For such a luxury car, you have to pay in full upfront. Are you sure about this?”

Ying Feng handed him a golden pebble-like object. “Is this enough?”

The owner took it with disdain and looked at it. With wide eyes, under the light, he inspected it closely and then nodded hurriedly. “More than enough! Along with this vehicle, I’ll also offer you three years of warranty, five years of maintenance, ten years of insurance, and free lifetime car washes. Does that sound good?”

“Good.”

“You can choose the vehicle’s color: red, yellow, blue, white, or black. How about gold?”

“Yellow.” People who like bananas probably prefer yellow.

“Alright, no problem. As this vehicle is a special product and can’t be delivered via teleportation, please leave your address. I’ll have an employee drive it over to you shortly. Thank you for your patronage, and you’re always welcome back.”

After completing the procedures, Ying Feng logged offline. Ling Xiao was still asleep.

About fifteen minutes later, there was a commotion in the dormitory building. It seemed that many students were rushing out in excitement, and there was also a loud noise from below.

Meanwhile, Ying Feng received a message from the car dealership, indicating that the delivery efficiency was higher than he expected.

The ground floor of the building was packed with students, all coming to see the cool new car. The store clerk pressed a button inside the car, and the elliptical flying vehicle instantly transformed into a convertible sports car. He jumped out of the car gracefully, and the crowd erupted with gasps of amazement.

“Is this really the Flying Shark?”

“It’s absolutely amazing!”

“Why is a Flying Shark parked outside our dormitory?”

“I’d love to drive it. Even touching it would be enough.”

The clerk scanned the crowd and finally fixed his gaze on the entrance of the dormitory building. Everyone instinctively followed his gaze, and Ying Feng, under the watchful eyes of everyone, walked out of the building at a leisurely pace.

“Please sign here.” The clerk presented an electronic agreement on a tablet, and Ying Feng signed his name on it.

“These are two chips. Insert them into your personal terminal to start the vehicle. There’s also a car key, which theoretically isn’t necessary. Still, some like to carry it around.” Mainly to show off.

Ying Feng accepted the items, and the clerk nodded politely before leaving, saying, “Enjoy your ride.”

After the clerk left, Ying Feng turned and walked back into the building, drawing many envious and jealous glances. If it weren’t for the clear expression on his face that read, ‘I don’t want to be friends with anyone’, someone might have approached him.

Considering that Ling Xiao might sleep forever before waking up, Ying Feng inserted one of the chips into his terminal and placed the car key next to Ling Xiao’s pillow.

Ying Feng clearly remembered Heng He’s words from the previous day about keeping an eye on Ling Xiao. However, despite being a light sleeper, when he woke up the next morning, the car key remained untouched, but the person beside him had disappeared without a trace.
