Chapter 9: Departure

Not long after Sun Jiang withdrew, the four received new prompts.

The remaining three in the team got: [Roster] — [Team member shortage (3/4). Do you want to add members?]

What Sun Jiang received: [Roster] — [A lonely boat can never reach the shore.]

A poetic message, yet a curse-like result.

Sun Jiang disappeared.

Xu Wang, Wu Sheng, and Kuang Jinxin watched as his figure became fainter and eventually vanished, leaving the space where he had sat empty, as if he had never been there.

The air in the cave thickened, as if rapidly frozen, filled with an utter chill.

“Did he return to reality or…” Kuang Jinxin muttered, not daring to say the last word.

Returning to reality meant relief, but complete disappearance meant something else entirely—erasure. Two speculations, one a heaven, the other a hell.

A lonely boat can never reach the shore. Xu Wang recited the phrase he had just seen on Sun Jiang’s arm in his mind, his heart sinking. This didn’t seem like good news of someone returning home.

“He didn’t return to reality, but he didn’t disappear either,” Wu Sheng suddenly said.

Xu Wang instinctively disbelieved, casting a sideways glance at him. “How do you know?”

“I don’t guess like you do. I use logical reasoning.” Wu Sheng shrugged, his calm demeanor contrasting with his teammates’ worries.

“So what did your reasoning deduce?” Xu Wang rolled his eyes upwards, but strangely, the clouds in his heart dispersed quite a bit.

Wu Sheng no longer kept them in suspense. “Choose ‘add members’.”

Reluctantly, Xu Wang acted slowly, while Kuang Jinxin, listening intently, didn’t hesitate to follow suit.

Soon, both their arms displayed the same list of potential members to add:

1/23 Sun Jiang [Invite]

1/23 An Peng [Invite]

1/23 Bai Haichuan [Invite]

1/23 ……

The list had at least twenty to thirty names, all with 1/23 like theirs. Apart from Sun Jiang, who had previously been part of the team, the rest were ordered alphabetically by the first letter of their surname.

“Are so many people in the Owl?” Kuang Jinxin hadn’t expected this. “How come we haven’t met anyone? And why are they all alone without forming teams?”

Knowing Sun Jiang was still safe relieved Xu Wang, who patted Kuang Jinxin’s head with a chuckle. “Since it’s a list of potential members, of course, it would only list individuals. If there were team members, it wouldn’t be called an invitation, but poaching.”

Kuang Jinxin: “But we haven’t encountered anyone, whether they’re in a team or not?”

“Uh, those who withdraw might temporarily disappear, like Sun Jiang, and as for other teams…” Xu Wang tilted his head, then had an epiphany. “We must have just missed each other!”

Kuang Jinxin frowned slightly, as if wanting to believe but finding it hard to convince himself. “Is it really that coincidental?”

Wu Sheng couldn’t stand it and glanced at Xu Wang. “If you don’t know, just say you don’t know. Don’t lead the kid astray.”

The three ultimately didn’t invite any new members. Regarding going to Northern Shaanxi, let alone the unknown attitude of the new invitee, even the three of them hadn’t reached a consensus yet.

At five o’clock sharp, that intermittent, annoying voice sounded in their ears—

[Owl: Dear~ It’s dawn. Time to send you home.]

Three were ejected, but four gathered.

Sun Jiang appeared, looking just as surprised.

After a brief exchange of information, the three learned that after Sun Jiang disappeared, he appeared in another identical place—the same cave, the same ice waterfall—only without anyone else. Then he returned to the cave and sat there until five.

It was like the four at a mahjong table were redistributed into two tables. Each table had the same set of mahjong, but one was three short of one, the other one short of three, and each table in different rooms, invisible to each other.

Kuang Jinxin’s question of “why we never meet other teams or people” seemed also explainable with this mahjong theory—indeed everyone was in the “Owl”, perhaps even facing the same bears, the same guessing idioms, but in different rooms, independently.

This time they were welcomed back to Liuyin Park, only four or five hundred meters from the last location at Qingnianhu Park, corresponding with the location and distance of the ice waterfall and cave in the “Owl”, reaffirming Wu Sheng’s deduction about the geographical “inside-outside correspondence”.

Sun Jiang hailed a taxi, not saying a word of farewell, just smiling through the car window after sitting in, as if wanting to wave, but eventually just nodding his head.

The taxi drove off, disappearing at the end of the street, vanishing in the pre-dawn darkness.

Under the streetlight at the park entrance, three young men stood in the cool breeze, momentarily speechless.

A large leaf, lifted by the wind, smacked the back of Xu Wang’s head. On reflex, he slapped it, and the brittle leaf cracked mournfully under his palm.

Xu Wang wordlessly grabbed the dry leaf, feeling even more troubled. “Alright, let’s not stand here like idiots. Let’s go home!”

“Let’s go to my place” was shortened to just “let’s go home.” Though he said it unintentionally, it gave the listeners a sense of “going to their own home.” It was odd but quite wonderful, like a warm breeze in the chilly dawn.

Back in Xu Wang’s living room—the same sofa, the same chair.

As soon as Kuang Jinxin sat down, he shouted out decisively, “Xu Ge, I’ve decided. I’m going to Shaanxi with you!”

Xu Wang nearly fell off his chair, and he saw that Wu Sheng’s expression wasn’t much better than his own. Even the usually decisive Wu Sheng confirmed once more, “Are you sure?”

Kuang Jinxin looked steadily at Wu Sheng, nodding vigorously. “I’m sure. I can’t focus on my internship, not with this hanging over my head. No, with this matter unresolved, I can’t settle down to do anything.”

Wu Sheng was unmoved. “What about your internship assessment?”

Xu Wang silently applauded his classmate in his heart.

Being hot-headed was a patent of the young, but as adults, they should at least not add fuel to the fire if they couldn’t be positive role models. Otherwise, no matter whose child they misled, it would be a sin.

Kuang Jinxin clearly didn’t expect Wu Sheng to be so thorough. He stood there dumbfounded for a long time before scratching his head sheepishly. “Don’t worry about the internship assessment. Actually… well… let me tell you the truth. The owner of this teahouse is a distant relative of mine. According to family hierarchy, he should even call me ‘uncle’.”

This unexpected “relationship” stunned both Wu Sheng and Xu Wang.

“Actually, I am going to help out at home after graduation and won’t need to look for a job. Our school doesn’t strictly require every graduate to have an internship assessment. But in my senior year, while others were looking for jobs or preparing for postgraduate studies, I didn’t want to idle away every day. So, when I called home, I casually mentioned wanting to find a part-time job to experience life. The next day, my second uncle and younger aunt found me an internship…”

The shame of “taking the back door” made Kuang Jinxin’s voice and head lower.

Xu Wang was more concerned about something else. He said he called “home”, but the ones who responded were his “second uncle and younger aunt”…

“Xu Ge.” Kuang Jinxin’s voice suddenly rose, interrupting Xu Wang’s thoughts. He lifted his head with the naivety and determination of youth and repeated his decision. “I’ll go with you!”

“Okay.” This time, Wu Sheng didn’t hesitate.

After recruiting Kuang Jinxin, Wu Sheng naturally turned his attention to Xu Wang. “What about you?”

Xu Wang turned his face away, looking at the stars outside the window.

Wu Sheng stood up and walked around the tea table to where he was looking up, using his height advantage to block his view. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Xu Wang had no choice but to look up at the other’s handsome face, speaking slowly and solemnly like a sage. “I am pondering.”

Wu Sheng choked on his frustration. “What’s there to think about? You don’t need an internship assessment, and you have no family to drag along.”

Xu Wang retorted with irritation, “So a single dog doesn’t deserve respect?”

“What does respect have to do with it?” Wu Sheng couldn’t understand Xu Wang’s thought process. “Being single means fewer attachments. We’re both the same. It’s like the saying, ‘A single dog with no house, no car, ready to go at a shout.’”

Xu Wang: “…Does everyone in America speak Chinese?”

Wu Sheng: “Huh?”

Xu Wang: “Otherwise, where do you get all these witty words!!!”

“Presumptuous” was the second major flaw of Wu Sheng, besides “showing off”. Many classmates had been tormented by him. His personality, to put it nicely, was “I think we should all think this way,” or plainly, “How can you not think like me? That’s strange.”

Although it turned out most of the time Wu Sheng’s ideas weren’t wrong and were even the best solution, his overly simplistic and brute force rational thinking really made people want to smack him.

If only he could put himself in others’ shoes and speak more pleasantly!

As the moon set and the sun rose, the sky outside the window gradually brightened.

Kuang Jinxin looked at the “presumptuous” Wu Sheng and then at Xu Wang, who was “deep in thought”, and felt it was better to be a spectator.

Xu Wang was no longer concerned about Classmate Kuang. Any decision was the result of weighing various factors, and he was now fully focused on calculating the score of each factor in his mind.

To go or not to go?

Work accounts for 5 points.

Safety accounts for 3 points.

Cost (money) accounts for 1 point.

Wu Sheng…

Xu Wang stole a glance at him.

91 points.

Fuck me!

Xu Wang had made up his mind but couldn’t show weakness. “I’ll try to ask for leave,” he said to Wu Sheng with a raised eyebrow, adding, “Don’t get your hopes up.”

Wu Sheng looked dissatisfied. “It’s just a lack of determination. If you can’t get leave, then quit… Hey, watch the kicking!”

The discussion of whether to go or not ended with “His Majesty being kicked.”

The fruit knife that vanished was eventually found on the ground beside Xu Wang’s bed.

By then, Kuang Jinxin had already left, and Wu Sheng was in the living room checking new coordinates on his laptop. Xu Wang went to his bedroom to change into a business suit. While tying his tie, he inadvertently looked down and saw it right there.

Wu Sheng, who was finally allowed into the bedroom, took the fruit knife, played with it for a while, and deduced, “Maybe it wasn’t dropped. If you’re sure you put it in your pocket, it’s likely that the ‘Owl’ doesn’t allow carrying lethal weapons.”

Xu Wang didn’t say anything, tacitly agreeing with his deduction.

The issue of the knife was put to rest. Xu Wang looked down at his half-tied tie, then up at Wu Sheng, and gestured with his chin towards the door, clearly indicating something.

Wu Sheng quietly watched him for a while and then really turned to leave.

Xu Wang was surprised at his obedience today, but just as the bedroom door was left with no one, a head peeked out again. “You look good in a suit.”

Xu Wang was stunned, and after a long while, he replied stupidly, “Oh.”

It wasn’t until he was on the subway that Xu Wang fully came to his senses, letting out a long howl in his heart—why flirt if you’re not planning to marry!

Arriving at the company, the “Northern Shaanxi Travel Plan” naturally came up—

“Taking leave again?” The manager’s face clouded over. “Why do you have so many issues every day?”

Xu Wang looked down and demure, trying to appear as agreeable as possible.

The manager was frustrated and was about to vent when he saw the number of days on the leave request. His face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot, and he yelled through the office door to the sales hall. “A week?! You might as well quit—”

Xu Wang calmly looked up and nodded smoothly. “Okay, I’ll resign. Please settle this month’s salary.”

The manager was stunned, obviously not expecting Xu Wang to be so decisive.

Xu Wang went straight to the finance department to get his pay.

But to his surprise, after a phone call, the finance department only left him with 1,900 yuan.

Xu Wang held back his anger and reminded them, “I just sold a large apartment a few days ago.”

“If you resign, you have to give a month’s notice. If you quit immediately, no commission bonus will be settled. Your basic salary is three thousand, minus the absences and the social security the company has already paid for you. That’s all.” The financial officer was adamant. Clearly she was instructed over the phone.

Xu Wang looked at her steadily for a long while, then suddenly laughed, his voice becoming incredibly gentle. “I’ve changed my mind. I won’t resign.”

The employees, who had been whispering among themselves, sensing something unusual, were surprised to see Xu Wang come out of the finance room empty-handed and, instead of leaving, stand in the hall as if it was a normal day at work.

A few minutes later, the manager’s office door was urgently knocked on. “Manager, you need to come out and see this!”

In the lobby, Xu Wang, dressed in a suit, was explaining apartment layouts to a customer—

“You’ve got a great eye for choosing this one. We just changed the layout of a three-bedroom apartment into four with two living rooms. It’s a bit cramped, but you’ll get used to it, and it’s really practical. Look at this living room. The sun absolutely won’t get in, so there’s no worries about the summer heat or the setting sun. It’s guaranteed to stay cool…”

He was all smiles; his voice was loud and clear, exuding an aura that demanded attention. Even the customers with other property consultants found it hard not to be drawn in, listening intently whether they meant to or not.

“Greenery? Don’t worry about that. The area around this complex is all wasteland. The nearest bus stop is a half-hour walk away. You can plant whatever you like and enjoy the bountiful harvest. As for amenities? They’ll definitely be there, I assure you. It might just take three, five, or eight years to develop…”

“Xu Wang,” the manager, who came out to see what was happening, said with controlled anger. “Come, with, me, inside.”

The sliding door closed, and the blinds were drawn.

Without mincing words, the manager delivered the ultimatum. “You’re fired.”

Xu Wang nodded, agreeable and willing to negotiate. “I won’t take a penny that isn’t mine, but I won’t leave a penny that is mine. Settle it, and I’ll leave.”

The manager sneered. “Either you leave on your own, or I’ll have security throw you out.”

“Okay.” Xu Wang smiled back with a very warm and gentle kind of smile. “If you throw me out, I’ll go to the labor bureau and file a complaint. Unjustified dismissal violates the Labor Law. And let me remind you, when an employee sues a company, it’s not about who’s right but who makes more noise. After I file my complaint tomorrow, I’ll hang a banner in front of your sales office the day after. Do you think ‘Give Back My Hard-Earned Money’ sounds good, or ‘Unscrupulous Developer Cuts Corners, Homeowners Have Nowhere to Turn for Justice’ sounds better?”

The manager was so angry that his cheeks trembled. His face turned the color of liver, but he couldn’t utter another word.

In the brisk late autumn air, the sun was shining brightly.

Xu Wang, with 29,000 in cash, found the nearest ATM and deposited it all. Stepping out of the ATM booth, Xu Wang stretched his arms in a big yawn, as if bidding farewell to a weary past and welcoming the unknown tomorrow.

Chapter 8: New Coordinates

Xu Wang didn’t want to get entangled with him on this dangerous topic. He simply assumed the “landlord” attitude and decisively pushed the person back to the living room.

Under the same roof, one sitting on the sofa, the other on a chair, they looked at each other across the coffee table, and the air suddenly became quiet.

Xu Wang’s face remained normal, but his heart was already pounding against the wall. He knew that being alone with the other person would lead to this fatal situation!

“You…”

Surprisingly, Wu Sheng was the first to speak, something Xu Wang hadn’t expected at all. He thought he was the only one desperately searching for a topic.

“How are you feeling?”

“…..”

What kind of question is that?

“Enough to beat two of you.”

“I’m asking about the wound on your shoulder.”

“……”

The successive arrivals of Kuang Jinxin and Sun Jiang finally put an end to the awkward conversation. They probably sneaked in some sleep during the day and looked quite spirited.

At midnight, the expected hooting of the Owl’s cry arrived.

“Hoot hoot—”

The living room remained unchanged, and the three looked towards Xu Wang, who sighed and stood up to lead his companions to the bedroom.

A bed of quicksand.

Wu Sheng nodded. “This door… is quite unique.”

Unlike the previous forceful drags, this time the four of them willingly jumped in, with a bit of solemnity heading into battle.

Xu Wang was the last to dive in. Before leaving, he pocketed a fruit knife from the desk.

He experienced familiar weightlessness and rapid falling, and then, in the blink of an eye, all four crashed into the snow.

As they landed, all four arms rang out almost simultaneously, each with more than one sound, and the dense, fluctuating “dings” intertwined into a rapid, noisy chorus.

Having learned from the previous experience, this time everyone had rolled up their sleeves before entering Owl, so when they heard the prompt, all four sitting on the ground uniformly raised their arms to check.

Xu Wang received four new messages. Two from the [Stationery Box], with two new item icons appearing in the previously empty slots: [(Defense) Circular Ground Prison1] and [(Offense) Cao Chong Weighing the Elephant2]; one from [Cheat Sheet], updating coordinates to (109.7395, 38.3437); and one from [Report Card], which was the same information they had seen before—[Kuang Jinxin, Sun Jiang, Wu Sheng, Xu Wang, 1/23 submissions].

1Draw a circle on the ground to serve as a prison (画地为牢) Idiom referring to setting a strict limit or creating a situation where one’s movements or thoughts are restricted.
2(曹冲称象) This comes from the story where Cao Chong received an elephant from an ambassador. Everyone was curious about the weight but had no way to measure it, so Cao Chong proposed to place the elephant onto a boat and mark the waterline. After the elephant was removed, he filled the boat with a known load of weight until it reached the waterline, thus allowing them to calculate the elephant’s weight.

From the information in the [Report Card], these things should have been sent at the moment of clearing the challenge, and it was very likely that they were immediately snapped back to reality after their submission, which was why they only received them today.

“The ‘Owl’ knows our names.” Wu Sheng stated calmly as he too saw the [Report Card], but his words felt heavy.

“It can suck us in, lead us around like monkeys to do tasks and overcome challenges, so nothing it does would surprise me now,” Xu Wang self-mockingly said, actually to reassure Wu Sheng and himself. “Right now, I’m more concerned about this,” he said, showing the [Stationery Box] on his arm to his teammates, pointing to the two new slots. “‘Circular Ground Prison’ is probably for trapping beasts, but what the hell is this ‘Cao Chong Weighing the Elephant’?”

Surprise flashed through Wu Sheng’s eyes. He didn’t respond but instead revealed his own arm.

That’s when Xu Wang saw that his [Stationery Box] had been updated with [(Defense) Cicada Shed Its Shell1] and [(Offense) Wind That Sweeps Away the Clouds2].

1(金蝉脱壳) Idiom referring creating an illusion to escape so the other party can’t detect in time. It can also mean a fundamental change in things.
2(风卷残云) Idiom referring to sweeping away everything at once.

Xu Wang then looked at the other two teammates. The coordinates updated in the [Cheat Sheet] and the submission information in the [Report Card] were completely consistent, but uniquely in the [Stationery Box], Kuang Jinxin had [(Defense) A Clever Rabbit Has Three Burrows1] and [(Offense) Tears Like Rain2], while Sun Jiang had [(Defense) Lost in a Five-Mile Fog3] and [(Offense) Bolt from the Blue4].

1(狡兔三窟) Idiom referring to a smart individual who has multiple plans or strategies to ensure safety and survival. In modern day, it has a more negative tone, implying that someone is cunning.
2(泪如雨下) Idiom referring a state of extreme sadness (to the point where that person is crying profusely with tears streaming down their face like rain).
3(五里雾中) Idiom referring to a state of confusion and being unable where one is unable to see the truth.
4(晴天霹雳) Idiom referring to a sudden or shocking event or disaster.

Previously, aside from the [Skate Shoes] everyone had the same items, which led them to naturally assume that new items would be the same for everyone. It wasn’t just Xu Wang, but Wu Sheng, Sun Jiang, and Kuang Jinxing all thought this.

However, what puzzled them more was the nature of the items.

The ones with (Defense) at the front were easier to understand. By comparing them to the similarly (Defense) [Jingle Bells] and [Fishnado], it was known that they were for escaping and self-protection, focused on defense rather than offense. But the (Offense) items appearing for the first time seemed to carry a subtle and eerie aspect.

“Wind That Sweeps Away the Clouds.” Wu Sheng pondered for a moment and nodded. “Understood, it summons a great wind as a weapon.”

Xu Wang didn’t know where his certainty came from, but he had to admit that compared to his own [Cao Chong Weighing the Elephant], the other’s weapon at least had a clear direction in its name.

Looking at it this way, Sun Jiang’s was even clearer. [Bolt from the Blue]—isn’t that just about striking down whoever you aim at!

“Xu Ge,” Kuang Jinxin timidly interrupted Xu Wang’s wild musings. “If you don’t like Weighing the Elephant, we can trade.”

Whether the items in the [Stationery Box] could be exchanged was still unknown, but Xu Wang stared at Kuang Jinxin’s [Tears Like Rain] for a long time before shaking his head firmly, responding, “It’s destined to be yours. You keep it.”

Kuang Jinxin looked at those four characters that had nothing to do with “offense” and felt like crying right then.

“If these items are needed for the second challenge, why did we all get different ones?” Sun Jiang wondered, or rather, was reluctant to accept this reality. “If it’s like the [Skate Shoes] before, needed in specific situations to function, then if we fail the challenge and come back a second time, won’t we be without items?”

“Maybe it’s not that complicated. Perhaps it’s simply a reward for the last submission.” Xu Wang stood up, brushing off the snow. He was nervous in spirit but couldn’t hold back the fatigue, yawning several times. “Who knows. Let’s take it one step at a time.”

Sun Jiang was already standing, looking around, ready for action. Seeing Wu Sheng still slowly getting up, he was almost frustrated to death. “Are you planning to take a nap before getting up?”

“Not really.” Wu Sheng finally stood up, but his speech remained unhurried. “But I always feel that there’s no use in hurrying tonight unless any of you can conjure up an airplane.”

Sun Jiang frowned. “What do you mean?”

Xu Wang and Kuang Jinxin also looked at him in confusion.

Wu Sheng extended his arm and pointed to the new coordinates on the [Cheat Sheet]. “This place is not in Beijing.”

Sun Jiang, initially a bit confrontational, laughed dismissively with a clear scoff of disbelief. “Then tell us, where is this place?”

Unperturbed, Wu Sheng scrolled back to the owl’s head, retracting his arm, and confidently uttered two words, “Northern Shaanxi.”

Practice is the only criterion for testing truth*.

*It’s an article written by Chinese intellectual Hu Fuming. The saying itself refers to looking at empirical evidence and real-world application in verifying theories, ideas, or beliefs. In this context, it’s like saying look for the evidence that the coordinates are actually in Northern Shaanxi.

After the group had walked in the snowfield for nearly two hours, covering both familiar and unfamiliar territory without triggering any events or challenges or encountering any wild animals, Sun Jiang, who was completely disbelieving, and Kuang Jinxin, who was half-doubtful, were thoroughly convinced.

Xu Wang had expected this outcome and wasn’t surprised at all.

The four sat down in a cave not far from the ice waterfall. The rocky ground was cold, but that was better than the snow. Xu Wang checked his phone—it was only half past two in the morning.

“Are we really going to sit here until five?” Xu Wang had been prematurely ejected twice before, once injured and once after submission, and had never experienced a “clock out” without any incident.

“You could also sing and dance to kill some time.” Wu Sheng, holding a stone picked up from somewhere, drew on the ground, casually giving a completely disinterested suggestion. “Anyway, it’s just us four here. Even if your singing is terrible, it won’t attract any demons or ghosts.”

Xu Wang gritted his teeth, about to retort, when he saw Kuang Jinxin leaning over to Wu Sheng, seriously observing the “artwork” on the ground, and asked, “Wu Ge, what are you drawing?”

Wu Sheng, focused entirely, didn’t raise his head. “A latitude and longitude map.”

The more Kuang Jinxin looked, the more familiar the contour of the grid-covered figure seemed—isn’t that the shape of the motherland! He incredulously widened his eyes. “Wu Ge, have you really memorized the entire country’s latitudes and longitudes and corresponding locations?!”

Wu Sheng continued without stopping. “Not all. Still missing a few provinces.”

“That’s impressive enough!” Kuang Jinxin’s eyes shone. “Just now, you looked at the coordinates and said it was Northern Shaanxi. I didn’t dare believe it. I thought, how can there be such a godly person who can pinpoint a location with just a glance!”

Finally, Wu Sheng put down the stone and slowly lifted his head. His face had a smile full of “modesty” plastered on it. “It’s actually not as complicated as you think. Just two maps, one of latitudes and longitudes, the other a map. You overlap them in your mind, use a regional division method…”

“Wu Sheng—” Xu Wang rolled his eyes, interrupting him, his drawn-out tone full of a “please stop showing off” warning.

Wu Sheng resignedly gave a “got it” look and turned back to Kuang Jinxin, much more grounded. “Memory, it’s innate.”

Kuang Jinxin: “……”

Xu Wang: “……”

No need to be so brutally honest!

The struck student, Kuang Jinxin, shrank to a corner, looking utterly pitiable. Xu Wang thought to say something comforting, and as he got up, his hand unintentionally brushed his pocket. He suddenly paused, patted the pocket again, still not feeling anything, and finally reached into the pocket to feel around—empty.

The fruit knife was gone.

He clearly remembered placing it in this pocket when he entered…

“What’s wrong?” Wu Sheng, noticing Xu Wang patting his pocket, looked up and sensed something was amiss.

There was no point in hiding it, so Xu Wang told the truth. “I brought a fruit knife in for self-defense, but now it’s gone.”

Sun Jiang and Kuang Jinxin looked over nervously. In a place where anything could happen, losing a knife could be a minor or a major issue.

Wu Sheng frowned but remained calm. “Did you still have it when you entered, or did you just now realize it’s gone?”

“Does it make a difference?” Sun Jiang didn’t follow his train of thought. “It’s gone either way.”

Xu Wang understood. He had only been acquainted with Wu Sheng of ten years later for one day and three nights, but he already deeply felt the man’s “programmer’s thinking”. Everything was binary: 1 was 1 and 0 was 0. The logic had to be clear, conditions explicit, with no 0.5 middle ground.

“I haven’t touched my pockets since entering, so I can’t be sure if it just disappeared or was gone the moment we entered.”

“Then there’s nothing to be done.” Wu Sheng was annoyed, obviously bothered by the lack of a clear answer. “The conditions aren’t enough to determine if this place automatically blocks ‘offensive’ items, or if you carelessly left it somewhere here.”

Xu Wang wasn’t insistent on finding the truth. After all, compared to a small fruit knife, the update of the [Cheat Sheet] was more concerning. “If that coordinate is really in Northern Shaanxi…”

“There are no ifs.” Wu Sheng cut him off without hesitation, emphasizing his point. “It is.”

If it weren’t for the need to maintain the team, Xu Wang would have really wanted to kick him. “Fine—it is. Then how are we supposed to get there?”

“Since we can’t get through here, we’ll have to go through the real world,” Wu Sheng answered matter-of-factly, without a second thought.

“How am I supposed to ask for leave from my boss?” Xu Wang struggled to maintain a smile, simulating a possible workplace conversation, word for word, gritting his teeth. “Boss, may I take a few days off? Why? I’d like to visit the old revolutionary base.”

Wu Sheng: “Okay, that’s a solid reason.”

Xu Wang: “Come here.”

Wu Sheng: “I refuse.”

Xu Wang: “I promise not to hit you.”

Wu Sheng: “But you’ll kiss me.”

Xu Wang: “……”

A single misstep can lead to eternal regret*!

*(一失足成千古恨啊) Idiom referring to once a mistake is made, you will hate it for life.

“Ding—”

An unexpected prompt tone was especially piercing in the cave.

Xu Wang immediately looked down.

This new message was from the [Roster].

His [Roster] interface was originally—

1/23 Xu Wang [Withdraw]

1/23 Kuang Jinxin [Kick]

1/23 Sun Jiang [Kick]

1/23 Wu Sheng [Kick]

But now only three people remained on the list, and the words “Sun Jiang has withdrawn” scrolled from left to right on it.

Wu Sheng and Kuang Jinxin, also looking down at their messages, saw it clearly on their own arms.

Before the three could speak, Sun Jiang laughed first, a mix of apology and bitterness. “I won’t leave Beijing. Even if I could take leave from work, I can’t explain it at home. Just mentioning it gives me a headache. Even if I could tell, no one would believe it, and I can’t let my wife and kids worry about me every day…”

Then he shifted his tone, lightening up. “But if I don’t go, even if you get there, you probably won’t trigger the new challenge. Rather than waiting to be kicked out, I might as well make room…”

His seemingly carefree tone was full of sincerity.

“Since withdrawal from the team is allowed, surely adding members is also possible. Don’t worry, I have a feeling that the people you’ll meet next will definitely be more reliable than this old guy.”

Midnight Owl Ch7

Chapter 7: Uneasiness

Owl, pronounced like “xiao”, only appears in the dictionary as one part of the term for “strigidae*”, a bird with a large head and a short, curved beak, encompassing many varieties, of which the owl is one.

*Clarity: The symbol engraved on their arm is owl [xiao] (鸮), which is pronounced like [xiao] (萧). It is part of the word strigidae [chi xiao] (鸱鸮), which is the family of birds owls belong to. However, owl [mao tou ying] (猫头鹰), which literally means “cat-headed hawk”, is more commonly and widely used.

After checking an online dictionary, the true nature of those few “hoots” at midnight surfaced.

It was the call of an owl, also the death knell signaling the start of the “Magical Moment”.

Dawn was approaching, and the sky to the east was turning pale, signifying life was returning to its normal track.

Sun Jiang was a driving instructor with students to teach today, so he was the first to leave. Kuang Jinxin was a senior majoring in tea science, currently interning at a tea house. According to him, the tea house owner was quite considerate, and taking another day off wouldn’t be a problem. However, they didn’t have much else to do but wait for the night, so after some persuasion from Wu Sheng and Xu Wang, Kuang Jinxin also went back to his internship.

After seeing them off, Xu Wang naturally turned his gaze to Wu Sheng, subtly indicating it was time for him to leave too. Deep down, he wished for more time with Wu Sheng, but rationally, he knew this interaction was pointless and harmful.

Wu Sheng caught the hint but didn’t act on it. Instead, he stood up as if eager to “deepen the reunion mood”. “Won’t you show me around?”

With no outsiders present, Xu Wang bluntly slapped the idea down. “It’s not a museum. What’s there to see?” Besides, with just a living room and a bedroom, the only place left to see was the bedroom, and any visit there without a “clear purpose” was dubious!

“Why such a big reaction? Unless…” Wu Sheng teased, his eyes drifting towards the bedroom. “Is there something in there you don’t want seen?”

Xu Wang was momentarily speechless, glaring at Wu Sheng before squeezing out, “How come you’re still so annoying after ten years?”

Wu Sheng glanced at him, the same old disdain. “Like you’ve made any progress.”

The two were like Mr. Wang meeting Mr. Yu1. The difference was only slight, yet each was well-versed in the other’s dark past. Thus, in their mutual mockery, neither could achieve an overwhelming victory. One wrong move may even lead to a situation where they inflict a thousand damages on the opponent but suffer eight hundred themselves2.

1Basically saying they are almost exactly the same with some minor differences. The name Wang (王) and Yu (玉) are almost the same characters, with the Yu having a minor difference.
2Line from Art of War by Sun Tzu describing a situation where there would be mutual losses that aren’t that different on either side, thus both sides would suffer losses.

Eventually, they both realized this and called a temporary truce.

However, as they caught up on recent times, Wu Sheng began to doubt Xu Wang’s career description. “Real estate consultant?”

Xu Wang defiantly retorted, “Is there a problem?”

Wu Sheng leaned back, crossing his legs and holding his cup with a genteel smile. “So, you sell houses.”

Xu Wang narrowed his eyes. “And what industry have you, the returnee entrepreneur, dabbled in?”

Wu Sheng took a sip of water. “Software development.”

Xu Wang nodded. “A code monkey*, then.”

*Coding peasant/farmer (码农) It’s a self-depreciating term for a programmer or software developer. In this context, he’s basically making a jab at Wu Sheng (instead of using a term like software engineer), responding to Wu Sheng’s comment, “Oh, so you just sell houses.”

Wu Sheng choked on his water as Xu Wang crossed his legs, his feet shaking gleefully.

Strangely, despite ten years apart, their banter felt like a return to high school days. Xu Wang thought maybe it was because they had missed all the awkward reintroduction phase in their rush of events and went straight into a chapter of “We’re still good old pals”.

As the day progressed, Xu Wang checked his phone and realized he needed to catch the subway or he’d be skipping work. He got up decisively, signaling Wu Sheng to leave. “Alright, go back to wherever you need to. I have to work.”

Wu Sheng looked at him incredulously, as if the concept of work was foreign. “Sun Jiang works because he has a family to feed; Kuang Jinxin because his internship is tied to his final evaluation. You neither have a family to support nor are you a student. With such a significant event happening, shouldn’t you sit down and plan instead of going to work?”

Xu Wang wanted to smack this guy with the sole of his shoe when he heard that tone of voice.

Upon hearing this kind of indifferent tone, Xu Wang felt like slapping someone with his shoe. “I might not have a family, but I can’t live off air. I might not die popping out of Owl, but if I don’t go to work today, someone really might.”

After taking a leave the previous day, another absence would likely mean losing his job.

“Forget it. I can’t argue with you rich folks,” Xu Wang dismissed, ending the conversation. If he continued the conversation, he felt like he would be just wallowing in self-pity.

Wu Sheng frowned, playing the innocent card. “How am I considered rich…”

Xu Wang rolled his eyes and went to change clothes, no longer interested in arguing. He had heard from a classmate who returned from the US that Wu Sheng was making waves in Silicon Valley, having earned his first pot of gold soon after college, seemingly on track to rival the likes of Zuckerberg.

The classmate might have exaggerated, but the envy was real, showing that they truly believed Wu Sheng was faring much better. This classmate, successful in their own right, already earned a significant salary before thirty.

As Xu Wang emerged from the bedroom in a business suit, he found Wu Sheng still lounging on the couch, not making any move to leave, legs crossed in the same angle. Xu Wang was exasperated. “What’s your plan, really? Squatting here all day?”

Wu Sheng, caught off-guard by Xu Wang’s fresh attire, stared for a moment with an indescribable glint in his eyes.

Uncomfortable under the gaze, Xu Wang shouted, “Hey—”

Wu Sheng finally snapped out of it, looking down to pick up his cup. “Ah, I told my partners I wouldn’t be going to the office today.”

Xu Wang’s initial confusion at him reaching for an empty cup turned to frustration at his words. “You mean you’re planning to stay here all day?!”

Wu Sheng looked up and drank for a long time, only to realize that the cup had long been empty. He then put it down naturally and slowly raised his head, his face already filled with righteous determination. “Your lives are important, so I must be the one to sacrifice. Someone has to think about how to deal with Owl.”

“You could think somewhere else.”

“I don’t have a place in Beijing.”

“Bullshit!”

“No, I don’t have any shit*.”

*Clarity: It’s a play on response to Xu Wang’s calling him out on his lie, and he’s responding with “I’m really not lying.” (humorously). This is not meant to be I don’t have shit (in the sense that you have nothing).

“…”

Throughout high school, Xu Wang’s success rate against Wu Sheng was a steady 50%. Now as an adult, after ten years of different experiences, Xu Wang sadly realized his winning rate seemed to have dropped.

“Don’t go through my stuff,” Xu Wang warned as if he were giving a death order. He stood at the door, directing a stern look at Wu Sheng. “If I find out you did…” He narrowed his eyes dangerously. “We’re done.”

Wu Sheng nodded with unprecedented sincerity and seriousness.

Very good. There are definitely secrets in the bedroom.

The security door clicked tightly shut.

Xu Wang sighed in frustration at his own lack of resolve and hung his head while waiting for the elevator.

Wu Sheng stroked his chin, eyeing the tightly sealed bedroom door, imagining countless unspeakable things inside.

A single door separated a world of thoughts.

As Xu Wang squeezed onto the subway, Wu Sheng, who had been hovering in front of the bedroom door for nearly half an hour, received a call from his partner. The program they had been developing had hit a technical snag that none of the engineers could solve, and it was up to him, as the CTO and co-owner, to step in.

Wu Sheng sighed into the phone. The joy he had just accumulated was disturbed. “Aren’t you a boss too? Couldn’t you handle such a minor issue?”

The voice on the other end had suddenly sharpened. “Minor issue? If I could have handled this ‘minor issue’, I wouldn’t have invested the same amount of money for only a three percent share, leaving you with seven.”

Wu Sheng was speechless. How does that old saying go? The greater the share, the greater the responsibility.

“Have Xiao Mu bring my laptop over. I’ll send you the address later.”

“Can’t you come back to the office? What’s so important that you can’t leave for a bit?”

“I don’t have the keys.”

“What?”

“No keys, so I can’t leave. If I leave, I won’t be able to get back in.”

There was silence on the other end of the line.

After a long pause, Wu Sheng heard his partner ask, “You’re not doing something illegal, are you…?”

The laptop was quickly brought over, but the “minor issue” was proven to be not so minor after all. By the time everything was resolved, it was already 2 p.m. Wu Sheng sent the data back to the office, forgetting about the bedroom mystery as he glanced at the time and immediately dived back into the external network…

Xu Wang had been restless all day, worried about the secrets in his bedroom being discovered. He had kept reassuring himself that there was nothing to worry about; after all, they agreed he would end the friendship if Wu Sheng snooped around, so he wouldn’t dare.

Perhaps it was the excessive worrying that had led him to sleep deeply during his lunch break and even dream vaguely. In the dream, Wu Sheng had stood in the center of his bedroom, holding a box-like trophy, much like a Marvel villain holding the Tesseract.

Maybe it was a stroke of luck or simply hitting rock bottom and bouncing back, but a client that Xu Wang had been nurturing decided to come in for a signing that afternoon. Originally, it wasn’t Xu Wang who was supposed to receive the client today, but the client insisted on him, having appreciated his patient introduction of various floor plans and realistic outlook on future developments of the surrounding area, and ended up signing for the largest unit in the building.

If this set sold, the commission alone would be over twenty thousand, which would count towards the total performance. This was directly linked to the performance calculation for his year-end bonus.

Riding on the momentum of this deal, Xu Wang shrugged off his previous fatigue and worries and left work in high spirits. Even when squeezing into the subway, he was particularly spirited.

When he arrived at the door of his house, Xu Wang couldn’t explain his feelings. From taking out the keys to opening the door, he was extremely cautious, almost as if he were a thief entering someone else’s home.

As he opened the door and entered the entryway, it was quiet. If not for the neon lights outside the window casting a faint glow, he might not have noticed Wu Sheng asleep on the sofa.

The person was sitting on the sofa, head tilted, sleeping soundly. On the coffee table, there was a laptop that Xu Wang had never seen before, its screen flickering with a cool light. It was unclear whether Wu Sheng had just fallen asleep or the laptop itself had disabled sleep mode, so even without operation, the screen remained bright.

Tiptoeing to the sofa, Xu Wang leaned down slightly, seriously observing this person for the first time since they had reunited.

Eyes, nose, mouth—almost no change—still as appealing when smiling as before. The term “charming appearance” was a label Xu Wang had unilaterally assigned to Wu Sheng’s looks back in high school, even though the latter had never dated throughout those three years.

Breathing, as Xu Wang peeked, brushed against Wu Sheng’s eyelashes. Whether real or imagined, those lashes suddenly trembled. Feeling guilty, Xu Wang quickly straightened up and pretended to look elsewhere.

This pretense led his gaze to the laptop’s screen.

The screen was full of English text. Xu Wang chewed over it and finally grasped two frequently appearing words—Multiverse, Parallel universe.

Xu Wang recognized only one word, “universe”, so he took out his phone to look up online translations, finding the first word to be “multiverse” and the second term “parallel universes.”

Xu Wang had no research on these profound topics but having watched many sci-fi movies and connected them with his recent experiences, he roughly understood what Wu Sheng was researching.

He was seriously studying, not just talking about it.

When encountering a problem, he must confront it head-on; the word “avoid” was definitely not in Wu Sheng’s dictionary—that was his temperament ten years ago.

Quietly returning to the bedroom, the first thing Xu Wang did after closing the door wasn’t to turn on the light and change clothes, but to check a box hidden in the deepest corner of the wardrobe. Only after confirming that it hadn’t been moved, he patted his chest and breathed a sigh of relief.

“What are you rummaging for?” A questioning voice came from the doorway, with a subtly rising tone.

Xu Wang’s scalp tingled, and he immediately slammed the wardrobe door shut, looking up to meet Wu Sheng’s probing gaze, trying to exude an aura of inviolability from head to toe. “I’m looking for clothes to change into. What’s it to you! Also, this is my home. Could you knock before entering!”

Wu Sheng crossed his arms, leaning against the door frame, leisurely watching him. “I did knock, but you might have been too sneakily engrossed to hear.”

Chapter 6: Sorting Things Out

Treading through the night, four people hurried out of the park in one breath. Outside the park lies North Andeli Street, where both the large buildings and the residential areas were as quiet as if they were in deep sleep, with only the dim light of the street lamps casting shadows of fallen leaves on the ground.

“Now what?” Kuang Jinxin panted heavily and wiped off his sweat. He was wearing a thick coat to ward off the cold and looked flush from his “night run”.

Wu Sheng glanced at the time on his phone and looked up. “There are three more hours until dawn. Let’s find a place to sit down. We need to sort this out from beginning to end.”

“What’s there to sort out?” Xu Wang, having completely snapped back to reality from the surreal, stood firmly on the ground with the sky overhead and expressed his frustration. “Just call the police!”

“No use,” Sun Jiang said as he fumbled in his pockets, finally finding nothing, and looked around at his companions. “Got a smoke?”

The response was two headshakes and one “no.”

Sun Jiang’s already morose face grew more irritated.

Xu Wang, however, was still pondering his earlier statement. “Sun Ge, what do you mean calling the police is useless?”

Sun Jiang, unable to suppress his fatigue, yawned and then pointed to himself and Kuang Jinxin. “Both of us tried calling the police yesterday, but as soon as we got through, we started having severe headaches. I thought my head was going to explode. I’ve never felt such pain in my life—couldn’t even speak, let alone hold the damn phone!”

“Both of you?” Xu Wang looked incredulously at Kuang Jinxin, who replied with a pitiful nod.

“And you?” Xu Wang turned to Wu Sheng with a glimmer of hope.

Wu Sheng decisively shook his head.

Xu Wang thought he had found a lead and was about to inquire further when Wu Sheng calmly stated, “I didn’t call the police.”

“Why?” asked Xu Wang.

Wu Sheng replied, “They were both rolling on the ground in pain, a vivid demonstration that calling the police was a dead end. Why would I repeat the same mistake?”

Xu Wang: “……”

Sun Jiang: “……”

Kuang Jinxin: “……”

Their discussion was interrupted by the realization that what they thought might be a nightmare the day before was actually a persistent ordeal they were facing. This was a long battle; they couldn’t afford to sit and wait out idly.

But where to “discuss” this was the question.

“McDonald’s? KTV? A bar?” Xu Wang suggested places suitable for an “early morning discussion”.

Wu Sheng vetoed them all in one go. “None of those. We need a place that’s both quiet enough to organize our thoughts and private enough to minimize the risk of information leakage.”

Xu Wang was incredulous. “Brother, we’re the victims, and we have to provide confidentiality for the perpetrator?!”

“Long story short,” Wu Sheng looked around as if searching for something, then asked casually, “Who do you live with?”

“I live alone,” Xu Wang replied without a second thought.

Relieved, Wu Sheng nodded. “Let’s go to your place.”

Xu Wang: “……”

This was a pit; this was definitely a pit, and he must climb out of it!

Kuang Jinxin: “I live nearby too, but I have roommates…”

Sun Jiang: “My family’s nearby as well. My wife and children are asleep.”

Wu Sheng: “I live near the company, not far from here. But if we discuss until dawn and the employees see us, I can’t give a reasonable explanation. It will lead to unnecessary gossip and speculation, which isn’t good for maintaining my aloof image.”

Do you have some misunderstanding about your own image?!

Xu Wang: “Come on, follow me. It’s dark and slippery outside. Watch your step…”

Half an hour later, the group arrived at Xu Wang’s home. He rented a one-bedroom apartment in an old neighborhood. Despite its age, the location was excellent, and it had been renovated, making it not cheap. But for Xu Wang, who only had himself to feed, the cost wasn’t too burdensome.

“Wow, Xu Ge.” Kuang Jinxin was the first to enter, politely standing there in the living room, not even trying to enter the bedroom, while looking around in all directions in astonishment. “Your place is so clean.”

Pleased with the compliment, Xu Wang was about to respond when Wu Sheng sighed. “Oh god, back to 222.”

“222?” Kuang Jinxin had a rare moment of insight. “Was that your high school dormitory with Xu Ge?”

“No,” Wu Sheng corrected seriously. “It was your Xu Ge’s own. The rest of us just stayed there. We’d mess up the place, avoid chores, and always forget to take out the trash. We didn’t have the sense of ‘making the dorm a home’.”

Xu Wang threw a pair of slippers he had just found at Wu Sheng’s feet, along with a big roll of his eyes. “Do you have to hold a grudge like that? Have you noted down everything I’ve ever said in a little black book?”

Wu Sheng didn’t respond and just smiled while he changed into the slippers with a cheerful and spirited look.

Xu Wang, tired of the banter, turned to pour four glasses of water. When he came back with the water, the other three had already settled on the sofa. He placed the water on the coffee table and fetched a chair from the bedroom.

The cups were filled with boiling water with steam rising, giving off a warm and soothing feel.

After two days of ordeal, the four of them could finally sit down and have a serious talk.

Wu Sheng was the first to speak. When it came to serious matters, he became completely focused. “We now know four things. First, the chosen ones will enter there at midnight, whether they want to or not; second, the substantial harm received there will be brought back to reality; third, once you want to report to the police, you will suffer an unbearable headache; fourth, the location there corresponds one-to-one with a location in reality—the distance and coordinate system are the same. For example, if we enter there from our home and move two kilometers in that place, when we return to reality, we will be two kilometers away from our home…”

Xu Wang had a sudden realization. This could explain why he popped out at the crossroads downstairs yesterday, and today he ended up even further away at Qingnianhu Park because they had traveled a distance there by sleigh.

“What use is knowing all this? I want to know what that damn place really is! Who’s playing us!” Sun Jiang interrupted Wu Sheng, voicing the question they all urgently wanted answered.

This was something Xu Wang, Kuang Jinxin, and even Wu Sheng themselves wanted to figure out. But “wanting” and “being able” were two different things.

“I don’t know. With the experiences and clues we’ve accumulated at this stage, there’s no way to answer these questions. But if we let it be and do nothing, we’ll never solve them,” Wu Sheng said, his tone unchanged and his demeanor as calm as if he was asking if you’d like some porridge today.

Sun Jiang slumped back onto the couch, looking up at the ceiling. His eyes were bloodshot from two sleepless nights filled with exhaustion. Xu Wang knew; he also realized that they couldn’t get any answers, but not venting out would make him feel even worse.

In fact, everyone felt the same, including Wu Sheng, who appeared unaffected. If he wasn’t bothered, why would he show the same determination he had when facing the toughest problem in a mock exam?

He was competitive, and Xu Wang could see it.

After all, such unprovoked disasters would infuriate anyone who encountered them.

“There are these four certainties, and there are four uncertainties,” Wu Sheng continued, his thoughts undisturbed by Sun Jiang’s interruption. “First, whether that place can truly exert mental control over people, such as preventing them from calling the police; second, whether there is some sort of protective mechanism that, when people involved are in grave danger, bounces them back to reality, minimizing harm, like when Xu Wang was attacked by a bear; third, today when we re-entered, both Sun Jiang and Kuang Jinxin’s [Stationery Box] were empty—the [Fishnado] and [Jingle Bells] that had never been used disappeared. Was this a punishment for their attempted police call or something else? Fourth, are there others like us who have been drawn into that place?”

“That… test submission,” Kuang Jinxin hesitantly said. “Before popping out, did you hear someone congratulate you for passing and successfully turning in the test?”

Xu Wang nodded quickly. “I heard it today, and yesterday I even saw a scorecard with information about another team turning in their test.” He had been confused when the new information popped up yesterday, but thinking about it today, he connected the dots.

“Yeah, I saw that too!” Kuang Jinxin’s face lit up with joy, but he instinctively reined it in. Clearly, he was an honest kid, not used to boasting, but definitely sharp-minded. “I remember the scorecard saying that team turned it in on 3/23—something about Yue Shuai… and someone named Anan…”

Xu Wang looked at Wu Sheng. “About the fourth uncertainty, I think we can move it to the certain category now. There are others.”

Wu Sheng took a sip from his cup and shook his head slightly. “Not enough. They might be humans, or not; might be forced like us, or willing; might share the same space with us and encounter us at any time, or might exist in a parallel, independent space, never crossing paths with us.” Putting down the teacup, he sighed. “Without confirming these, it can’t be classified.”

Xu Wang looked at him for a while and conceded. “After all these years, I admire your thoroughness.”

Wu Sheng frowned and said in sincere disbelief, “Just thoroughness?”

Xu Wang suppressed the urge to punch him and asked the last question, “The team that submitted their test yesterday was 3/23. Today, when we passed, it was 1/23. What do you think?”

“Same as you.” Wu Sheng shrugged, as if he had already accepted the reality. “It means there are 22 more levels waiting for us.”

Sun Jiang suddenly sat up, holding back from roaring, but his face clearly conveyed his astonishment and despair.

The discussion continued until 5:30 in the morning. Xu Wang learned that the first night after he was ejected early, the remaining three used Wu Sheng’s [Fishnado] and [Jingle Bells] to contend with the bear until they reached the coordinate point, then had to flee down the mountain due to not triggering the ice waterfall. They were pulled back into reality just before reaching the base of the mountain at around 5 a.m.

Calculating back, the time difference for them returning to reality was about an hour. Xu Wang was naturally long gone, which explained why Wu Sheng spent the next day searching all over Beijing.

That evening, Wu Sheng, having run around with Kuang Jinxin all day, simply parked his car at the last stop of his search, the West Fifth Ring, while Sun Jiang found an excuse to leave home and ducked into a KTV he’d never been to before. At the stroke of midnight, the eerie entrances appeared again, one in the back seat of the car and another on the wall of the KTV’s private room, as arbitrary as if there were no taboos but as persistent as a shadow. Two minutes later, the three, struggling fiercely, were dragged in just like Xu Wang the previous night.

The experiences of his teammates sent chills down Xu Wang’s spine, completely dispelling any thoughts of fleeing.

At the end of the discussion, Kuang Jinxin suggested, “It’s awkward always saying ‘that place’. How about we give it a name?”

Sun Jiang was speechless. “Are you playing house, naming that hell of a place?!”

Wu Sheng and Xu Wang didn’t object. In fact, the name was already glaringly obvious to them—

Xu Wang: “Isn’t there such a big word written underneath the owl’s head? That’s probably its name, so from now on we’ll call it…”

Wu Sheng: “Owl.”

Xu Wang: “Can. You. Not. Interrupt?”

Wu Sheng: “Okay, re-do. Isn’t there such a big word written underneath the owl’s head? That’s probably its name, so from now on we’ll call it…”

Xu Wang: “Owl!”

Chapter 5: Submission

The new phrase was “heart like dead ashes*”.

*(心如死灰) Idiom referring to a state of utter despair or hopelessness.

It was a perfect description of Xu Wang’s inner state at the moment.

The fatigue and sense of powerlessness brought on by frequent setbacks made it impossible for Xu Wang to concentrate on gesturing or explaining. His first thought was to interrupt by directly saying the word to change to a new one, but then he reconsidered given his state.

He took a deep breath and steadied his mind in the quietly passing seconds, hoping to find some fresh hope when the next word appeared.

His teammates, guessing the word, were clueless. Wu Sheng looked at him puzzledly, while Kuang Jinxin directly asked, “Brother, why aren’t you speaking?”

Sun Jiang, having already given up hope, said sarcastically, “We shouldn’t have guessed in the first place; it’s just a trap.”

Ten seconds passed. “Heart like dead ashes” disappeared, replaced by “struck by five thunders*”.

*(五雷轰顶) Idiom referring to after someone does something very bad and harmful by nature, they will naturally be punished (struck by five thunderbolts—the five representing the five phases/agents).

Xu Wang rebounded from his low point, his arms unfolding rapidly, gesticulating wildly as if simulating thunder and speaking as fast as lightning. “Crash—crash—smack—” He slapped his forehead with the last word!

Wu Sheng had an epiphany. “Struck by lightning*!”

*(天打雷劈) Idiom referring to not having a good death. Often used to curse someone, like you’ll get struck by lightning (for doing bad things). While the meaning is similar to Struck by 5 Thunders, it’s a different idiom.

Kuang Jinxin suddenly understood. “Bolt from the blue*!”

*Thunder As Clear As Day ( 晴天霹雳) Idiom referring to an unexpected or shocking event.

“It’s the thing about a bolt, but without the word ‘bolt*’!” Xu Wang was almost frantic. This was the closest they had ever been to the answer, and the closer they got, the more anxious he became.

*Clarity: The original idiom only has thunder () in it. The other two answers include lightning (bolt) (雷劈) and (thunder) bolt (雳).

Sun Jiang said, “It seems like it moved!”

Xu Wang was happy that Sun Jiang was also getting involved in guessing the phrase, but said, “Brother, even if it’s irrelevant, at least guess an idiom!”

“I mean the bear!” Sun Jiang’s eyes were filled with increasing horror. “The bear seems to be moving!”

Xu Wang felt a chill and immediately shifted his gaze from the ice waterfall back to the present, to the dark shadow under the feet of the three men… Sun Jiang was lying. What does he mean the bear seems to be moving? It’s already getting up!

As if sensing the “intense gaze”, the black bear, finally standing steady, lifted its small eyes and locked onto Xu Wang.

A man and bear, less than two meters apart.

Xu Wang, on roller skates, moved back slightly. His throat was dry, and his palms were sweaty.

The black bear tentatively stepped forward, not encountering the mysterious obstacle that had hurt it before, and then took a second step.

Xu Wang’s tension reached its limit. With one push of his skates, he darted to a tree seven or eight meters away, holding onto the trunk, not daring to blink as he stared at the black bear.

The black bear didn’t take a second step but instead gently scraped the ground with one paw—once, twice—as if a racecar driver was revving the engine before a race.

“Roar—”

The roar shook the sky as the black bear charged at Xu Wang like a giant cannonball!

Xu Wang’s nerves completely snapped, and he fled for his life!

In the vast forest, only this small area had hard snow. It was difficult to move anywhere else on roller skates, so Xu Wang could only run circles around his teammates and the black bear!

His teammates inside the invisible barrier were anxious but couldn’t help. Kuang Jinxin loudly suggested, “Xu Ge, why don’t you just let it pounce and finish it off? Like yesterday, you can be bounced back to reality!”

Xu Wang narrowly avoided the bear’s paw and reestablished some distance, despairingly responding, “Brother, I can’t gamble with my life. What if yesterday was just a fluke? If I die now, my life is over in this damn place!”

“Then run somewhere else and shake it off!” Despite his previous cynical remarks, Sun Jiang was genuinely worried for Xu Wang.

“The snow elsewhere is too thick and soft; I can’t skate!” The more Xu Wang explained, the more disheartened he became. He had thought earlier that the roller skates weren’t very useful, but now he realized his naivety; it was like drawing the bear away with the Fishnado or racing towards a coordinate point on the sleigh. The skates were indeed there for him to skate, to take on the devil’s pace*!

*Clarity: So his skates are called [My Skate Shoes] which is actually a reference to a song by John Pommelo. This line here is part of the song’s lyrics.

“Continue,” Wu Sheng suddenly said.

Xu Wang, having skated past, looked back at him. Wu Sheng’s face was calm and resolute.

“We don’t have any other choice, do we?” Wu Sheng raised an eyebrow. “Then continue. If we guess the phrase correctly, we should be able to escape.”

Xu Wang wanted to retort, “Easy for you to say. You’re not the one being chased by a bear!” But seeing the familiar determination on the other’s face, he swallowed his words.

This was Wu Sheng: when he really wanted to solve a problem, he would set aside all distractions, ignore what he considered unnecessary details, focus on the main points, and approach the core in a concentrated and efficient manner.

In Xu Wang’s heart, this was when Wu Sheng was at his most impressive, whether it was years ago in high school or years later in the present.

“Xu Ge—” Kuang Jinxin’s shout broke the tension.

Xu Wang tensed up reflexively and slid forward, the bear’s paw slashing through his down jacket, scattering a few white duck down feathers.

As Xu Wang’s life hung in the balance, Wu Sheng was almost breathless with fear, losing all composure and shouting, “What are you looking at me for? Look at the words; look at the bear!”

In fact, Xu Wang didn’t need the reminder and dared not be distracted anymore.

With the devil’s pace, he quickly regained distance, then lifted his head to glance at the ice waterfall.

The word on the ice waterfall, which had changed several times by now, was “fierce gaze*”, with seven seconds left on the countdown.

*(怒目圆睁) Idiom referring to a state of anger. It’s used to describe someone’s angry expression (glaring).

From the beginning, the ice waterfall had changed many phrases. Xu Wang suddenly realized that this “word bank” might not be infinite. Perhaps it was nearing its end, and perhaps each next word could be the last. Any further wrong guess could mean total defeat.

The sudden pressure made Xu Wang panic, but it also gave him a sense of determination to fight with his back against the wall.

He took a deep breath, calming his heart, and slowly separated his body and consciousness, letting his body rely on muscle memory to maintain skating in circles while focusing all his consciousness on the phrase.

This was the exam secret Wu Sheng taught him years ago, especially effective when stuck on problem-solving.

Xu Wang asked, “What was our high school’s dean like every day?”

Wu Sheng paused for half a second, then robustly replied, “Like a fierce demon1, with stormy eyebrows2, and an intense gaze!”

1(凶神恶煞) Idiom originally referring to a ferocious god, now later used to describe someone who is ferocious, intimidating, or evil.
2(横眉立目) Idiom describing someone’s fierce and intimidating expression. The literal translation is “horizontal brows and vertical eyes” which portrays someone who’s basically got their brows intensely furrowed while their eyes are curving in an angry way.

“Ding—”

A long-lost clear sound.

“Did we get it right? Did we?!” Kuang Jinxin was the first to exclaim, even more excited than Xu Wang.

Xu Wang didn’t have time to respond, but the uplifted corner of his mouth was the answer.

The countdown hadn’t ended yet, but the word on the ice waterfall had already changed for the first time.

Xu Wang saw the new word and spiritedly suggested, “She Haiyang’s singing!”

Wu Sheng retorted, “Wail like ghosts, howl like wolves1! Makes your hair stand on end2! Hated by all3!”

1(鬼哭狼嚎) Idiom describing a loud, shrill cry, resembling that of wailing or howling.
2(令人发指) Idiom describing something that’s extremely infuriating to the point it causes a strong emotional reaction (like your hair standing on ends).
3(人神共愤) Idiom referring to something so morally reprehensible or outrageous that it incites anger from everyone (to the point of even the gods).

“Ding—”

Xu Wang: “Zhang Lei chasing Zou Lulu!”

Wu Sheng: “In his dreams1! Wishful thinking2!”

1(痴心妄想) Idiom referring to thinking about the impossible but now also refers to stupid and absurd ideas (basically, unrealistic hope).
2(白日做梦) Idiom referring to a fantasy that cannot be realized.

“Ding—”

“Qian Ai eating!”

Like a whirlwind sweeping away the clouds*!”

*(风卷残云) Idiom referring describing doing something so swiftly and powerfully, like a huge gust blowing away the clouds. In this context, it basically describes someone inhaling food at an extremely fast speed.

“Ding-ding-ding—”

[Owl: Congratulations on passing. 1/23 successfully submitted! Dear, see you tomorrow~~]

A familiar voice sounded in their ears, but the message changed from yesterday’s “Early holiday. Sending you home in advance” to today’s “Congratulations”, with the same playful tone.

Xu Wang felt a sense of weightlessness again, wanting to call out to others but couldn’t, trying to grasp something but found only emptiness.

After what felt like an eternity yet just a moment, he finally felt the ground beneath his feet.

A breeze brushed his cheeks.

Xu Wang looked around in the darkness, slightly panicked, and instinctively called out, “Wu Sheng?”

“Here.” The reply came from close by.

“I’m here too, Xu Ge!” Kuang Jinxin announced without being asked.

“What the hell is this place?!” Sun Jiang, always on the edge, exclaimed.

With teammates around, Xu Wang felt slightly reassured.

His eyes, coming from the bright snowfield, slowly adjusted to the dark, and he saw the moon shining behind the clouds.

Another breeze passed.

It should’ve been cool in late autumn, but it felt warm and itchy on their frozen red faces.

It was night in Beijing.

They had returned.

Xu Wang finally felt relieved, withdrew his gaze, and looked around. He naturally assumed he was still standing at a crossroads like yesterday, but upon looking, he was stunned. Instead of a road, the four of them were standing on a bridge over a lake. The lake wasn’t very wide, seemingly like an artificial lake in a park. The bridge’s railings were made of wrought iron, delicate yet carrying an air of simplicity. On the opposite side of the bridge, there seemed to be shade from green trees, lush vegetation, and branches swaying gently in the moonlight, casting faint and shifting shadows…

Wait.

Xu Wang squinted and recognized the familiar scenery. “Isn’t this Qingnianhu Park?”

After this reminder, Kuang Jinxin and Sun Jiang, who lived nearby and often visited for fresh air, realized the same. “It is!”

As Xu Wang was about to discuss further with his teammates, Wu Sheng recited a string of numbers, “116.4085, 39.9616.”

Looking over, Wu Sheng was staring at his phone, the screen’s cold light illuminating his furrowed brows.

“Where… Where did you get a phone?”

“I put it in my pocket before being sucked in tonight, but it’s useless. There’s no signal inside…” Before he finished speaking, Wu Sheng suddenly realized, “The phone is not the point!”

“Ok, ok,” Xu Wang hurried to soothe and returned to the topic. “What were you reciting just now?”

“Coordinates.” Wu Sheng showed his phone to Xu Wang, displaying a satellite map with coordinates. “Our current location exactly matches the coordinates on the [Cheat Sheet].”

Kuang Jinxin instinctively looked at his arm to review the coordinates, only to remember that the mysterious patterns had disappeared along with their return to reality.

“You mean that place and reality share the same geographic latitude and longitude?” Xu Wang didn’t bother to verify. Wu Sheng’s mind was like a calculator. If he said the coordinates matched, they matched. But it didn’t make sense. “It’s day there and night here; a snowfield there and a park here, no similarities. What’s the point of using the same coordinate system?”

“Who’s there—”

Suddenly, a loud shout from the patrolling security guard was heard at the end of the bridge, interrupting the four people’s “research”. It was followed by a flashlight beam illuminating their “suspicious” figures.

Xu Wang was law-abiding, Wu Sheng was still focused on coordinates, and Kuang Jinxin had never been out past midnight before. So, under the flashlight, they all looked stunned.

At this time, Sun Jiang’s street smarts came in handy. He immediately responded, “We’re exercising—on a night run!”

The security guard was suspicious but somewhat convinced.

Sun Jiang immediately rallied the group. “Enough rest. Continue. One two one, one two one!”

Xu Wang, Wu Sheng, and Kuang Jinxin hurriedly followed, running in a straight line.

At three in the morning, their loud slogans echoed over Qingnianhu Park. “One two one! One two one! Staying fit promotes a healthy lifestyle!”

Mixed in were some murmurs—

Kuang Jinxin: “Xu Ge, who were those people you mentioned in the guessing game?”

Xu Wang: “High school classmates.”

Kuang Jinxin: “……”

Sun Jiang: “You two must’ve spent all your time back then gossiping about classmates.”

Xu Wang: “They weren’t idle either, saying he’s a show-off.”

Wu Sheng: “Saying he’s a chatterbox.”

Xu Wang: “Saying he’s always sucking up to teachers.”

Wu Sheng: “Saying he’s buddy buddy with everyone.”

Xu Wang: “Fuck, who said the last one?!”

Wu Sheng: “……”

Youth is fleeting and unretainable; why bother looking back?

Chapter 4: Ice Waterfall

The black bear’s pounce caused the entire sleigh to jolt violently! Unaware of what was happening behind them, the reindeer kept pulling hard, but with the added weight of a bear, their speed immediately slowed down.

The other three people sensed something was wrong and instinctively looked back, feeling their scalps tingle at the sight!

The black bear had stabilized itself and began to struggle into the sled.

Xu Wang, unarmed and desperate, kicked at the bear’s head!

The bear didn’t dodge but instead opened its mouth to catch it!

Xu Wang realized something was wrong, but it was too late to retract his kick!

Just as his foot was about to enter the bear’s mouth, a large leg appeared out of nowhere and kicked the bear’s forehead!

The force of the kick sent the bear’s head reeling backward, and instead of biting Xu Wang’s foot as intended, it only caught the tip. Xu Wang used the reaction force from the bear’s teeth to retract his leg quickly!

He felt a sudden chill on his foot—he had managed to pull back his leg but not his shoe.

Wu Sheng kicked the bear’s paw off the sled with two more swift kicks until the black bear fell into the snow with a thud. He then turned to Xu Wang and yelled, “Are you trying to lose your foot? Don’t you know you can take injuries out with you? Are you planning to hop on one leg for the rest of your life?!”

Xu Wang’s lips parted and closed repeatedly, but he couldn’t muster a single reply.

The words were well-intentioned… but why did it sound so snarky!

“Fuck, this thing must be fake. It’s a robot bear, right? How does it not get tired from running?!” Sun Jiang cursed, drawing everyone’s attention back. Sure enough, the black bear had caught up again, having been kicked off by Wu Sheng only to close the gap once more.

Kuang Jinxin was hugging the rear of a reindeer, making him the farthest from the bear among his companions. Yet, this did little to comfort him. Looking back at his partners and then at the bear, he felt like crying. “We shook it off easily on the sled yesterday. What’s happening today?”

“This won’t do.” Wu Sheng raised his arm to check the map. “We’re about to reach the coordinate point. If we can’t shake it off by then, we only have two choices: one, we stop the sled and risk getting killed by it while searching for a trigger prompt, or two, we don’t stop, and all our efforts tonight will be in vain.”

Xu Wang patted his shoulder. “Just say the third option directly.”

Wu Sheng was surprised. “You know I have a third option?”

Xu Wang smiled at him—an innocent, friendly smile. “Once you start showing off, that means you’re confident.”

Wu Sheng: “……”

He wondered if returning to his country had been a mistake.

“When we get close to the coordinate point, none of us should act. Wait for the bear to climb in successfully, then we’ll all jump off and let the running sled take the bear away,” Wu Sheng explained his plan succinctly.

Kuang Jinxin swallowed hard but was the first to agree. “It’s risky, but it seems feasible.”

Sun Jiang had no objections, which counted as tacit agreement.

Xu Wang stopped joking and nodded seriously.

With a shared goal, Wu Sheng looked down at his arm. “According to our speed on the map, we have about two more minutes to reach the coordinate point. Be ready.”

Kuang Jinxin and Sun Jiang rolled up their sleeves and stared at the maps on their arms, identical to Wu Sheng’s.

Xu Wang leaned in and saw they were looking at [Cheat Sheet] on their arms. He hurriedly opened his own [Cheat Sheet], and the same content immediately appeared—a small map with a coordinate point marked (116.4085, 39.9616) and, not far below it, four tiny squares moving steadily towards the coordinate point.

Xu Wang remembered what Wu Sheng had said about needing to reach a specific coordinate point, and he belatedly realized that the reindeer sled wasn’t running aimlessly but was precisely heading towards the coordinate point! The small map represented the area, and the four tiny squares were themselves!

The sleigh shook violently, its speed drastically slowing down—the black bear had once again dug its claws into the sleigh’s backrest!

Looking at the map, they saw the coordinate point was imminent. The four looked at each other and nodded in unison—it was now or never!

As the black bear struggled upwards, the four held their breath and stayed still, except for Kuang Jinxin, who was already far enough. The other three leaned forward as much as possible, giving the bear ample space to climb in.

Finally, the bear flipped over the backrest and landed with a heavy “thud” into the sled.

That sound was the signal, and all four leapt from the sled in unison!

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Fwish—

Suddenly lighter, the sled gave the reindeer a burst of energy. They lifted their antlers and dashed off, pulling the sled away in an instant.

Xu Wang rolled several times in the snow before coming to a stop. He had jumped while the sled was still moving slowly, but the snow was unforgiving. He felt his shoulder wound tear open from the impact, the pain going from intermittent to constant.

The others fell around him, rolling into “snowmen”. Wu Sheng, closest to him, was already getting up and coming over to help him. “Is your shoulder okay?”

Xu Wang didn’t move, but then the person just reached out and pulled him up.

Wu Sheng had grabbed his uninjured shoulder, whether by chance or intentionally.

After standing up, Xu Wang quickly withdrew his arm and subtly lowered his eyes. He brushed the snow off his body and, amidst a pounding heartbeat, pretended to be nonchalant by whistling. “It’s fine. Remember how I used to take on three at a time? You know that.”

Wu Sheng finally caught the chance to return a similarly innocent smile. “Yeah, I remember when I called the teacher over, you were already being tossed into the soccer goal by those kids.”

Despite the years, Xu Wang still got riled up when this incident was mentioned. “Why didn’t you come over to help directly? What’s the point of calling the teacher!”

“Nonsense.” Wu Sheng raised an eyebrow, exuding a righteous aura. “You were picking fights with those big guys, and I was still small back then. What good would I have done by going there? In times like those, you need to be smart!”

“That being said, brother, I don’t really want to interrupt your reunion here, but…” Kuang Jinxin timidly extended his hand in front of them, then slowly directed their gaze somewhere. “It seems like the bear jumped down with us.”

A few meters away, the black bear that had taken a hard fall seemed to just regain its senses, huffing and puffing on the ground.

Xu Wang widened his eyes at Wu Sheng. “Weren’t we supposed to jump down and then let the sled carry the bear away? Why did the bear jump down too?”

Wu Sheng gave him an innocent look. “You’re asking the wrong person. You should be asking the bear.”

Fuck me!

Xu Wang felt like screaming in frustration. Why was it that every time he decided to trust and rely on this guy, he always ended up failing in a hundred and one ways!

“What are we waiting for?” Seeing the black bear struggling to get up, Sun Jiang was almost ready to beat someone. “Guys, quickly find the coordinates!”

He was the first to start walking, checking all directions to align with the coordinates.

Xu Wang also wanted to help, but just as he took a step, he inhaled sharply from the cold—only then did he remember he was missing a shoe!

He hadn’t felt anything while sledding or rolling in the snow, as he was too busy bickering with Wu Sheng. Only now, as he tried walking, did he realize his foot was numb from the cold!

When Wu Sheng saw Xu Wang suddenly raise one foot in the stance of a golden rooster standing on one leg, his memory came flooding back, recalling the harrowing moment of “bear snapping off a foot” on the sleight. Without thinking, he immediately crouched down, ready to take off one of his shoes to give to Xu Wang, but as soon as his hand touched the shoelace, he heard a “ding—”.

No, four dings.

A crisp alert sounded from everyone’s arms.

Xu Wang lifted his arm, exited the [Cheat Sheet] to return to the main four options, and noticed a new little “1” in the top right corner of [Stationery Box]. Upon clicking, what was previously an empty slot now contained [(Defensive) My Skate Shoes].

“What the hell are skate shoes?” Xu Wang looked to his companions for help, bewildered. “Are we supposed to use the soles to hit the bear?”

Wu Sheng, looking down at his own arm and hearing Xu Wang’s question, looked up just as confused, a mix of bewilderment and perplexity in his eyes. “What skate shoes?”

Xu Wang, utterly baffled, waved his arm, assuming everyone else was in the same boat. “Isn’t there a pair of skate shoes in the stationery box?”

Wu Sheng shook his head. “Our update was for the [Cheat Sheet].”

Xu Wang was stunned, not knowing what to make of it. “Aren’t we… a team…”

Wu Sheng pondered for a moment before a hint of realization flicked in his eyes. “It must be different roles. Who gets what might be random, or maybe it’s because you’re missing a shoe, so it gave you that item.”

Xu Wang: “Then what did your [Cheat Sheet] update?”

Wu Sheng: “Stay still.”

“What kind of hint is that? And…” Xu Wang looked him up and down. “If you’re supposed to stay still, why are you squatting?”

Wu Sheng looked off into the distance, refusing to answer.

Kuang Jinxin’s pitiful voice sounded from beside him. “Xu Ge, I think it might not be a hint. It’s an order…”

Xu Wang looked in the direction of the sound and saw Kuang Jinxin two steps away, with one foot forward and the other back, the front leg bent and the back leg stretched, maintaining a bow-step forward charge posture. His stance seemed fierce and vigorous, but his expression was one of pitiful misery.

Putting it together with the “Stay still” from the [Cheat Sheet]…

Xu Wang’s face fell. “You guys didn’t…”

Kuang Jinxin’s mouth drooped even further, looking utterly dejected. “As soon as I stepped forward, I got stuck.”

Xu Wang understood. No wonder Wu Sheng’s hand froze while touching his shoe. But luckily for them, they had the [Cheat Sheet] always in view. If they had updated the [Stationery Box] like him, they wouldn’t have been able to move at all to check it.

In a whirl of thoughts, Xu Wang looked towards Sun Jiang, who was also immobile except for his neck. The only luck he had was that when he was “frozen”, he wasn’t in any odd position and now stood as straight as a post.

Seeing Xu Wang looking, Sun Jiang, nearly bursting with urgency, yelled, “What are you dawdling for? Use whatever you’ve got. It might just be the game-changer!”

Wu Sheng was much calmer, understanding Xu Wang’s worry, and said assuredly, “Don’t worry about us. If the trigger for everyone arriving is to stay still, then staying still won’t pose a fatal risk. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense.”

Reassured, Xu Wang took a deep breath and activated [My Skate Shoes]!

The moment the icon disappeared, Xu Wang felt himself suddenly ten centimeters taller. When he looked down again, the remaining shoe had vanished, replaced by a pair of skates… with four wheels underneath.

Aren’t these just fucking roller skates?!

“Careful—”

The three people rooted in place suddenly shouted in unison!

Xu Wang only felt a shadow approaching from the corner of his eye. He shifted to the left and slid out several meters before realizing the snow here was extremely hard, as if compressed by a road roller, making skating effortless!

The black bear pounced and missed. As it got up to pounce again, it noticed three more motionless figures closer to itself and immediately shifted its target!

Xu Wang, seeing this, nearly stopped breathing. He could dodge, but his three teammates seemed as if they were grown into the snow!

In a life-and-death moment, Xu Wang thoughtlessly scooped up a hard chunk of snow and fiercely threw it at the bear’s back!

But he was a step too late. By the time the snow chunk fell, the bear had already pounced on the three!

Bang—

A huge collision sound that hurt just to hear.

Xu Wang’s eyes widened. He was certain there was nothing around the three, but the bear hit an invisible wall just a foot away from them and slid down dejectedly.

The impact was severe, adding to the injuries from a previous sled fall that hadn’t fully healed. The bear didn’t even groan and lay completely still a foot away in the snow.

Xu Wang was thoroughly confused by the series of events. He sadly realized that in this territory, he was just a weakling* with neither ability nor intelligence!

*Scum power of 5. This is a reference to Dragon Ball where Raditz first lands on Earth and, using his combat analysis lens, measures a farmer with a combat power of only 5 (the scum in this case basically means a five combat-powered trash). It’s now slang used to refer to someone who performs poorly in battles or competitions.

His teammates, rooted like pine trees, meant Xu Wang couldn’t run. But with no new hints appearing, what else could he do?

In desperation, Xu Wang looked up at the sky, foolishly hoping for a guidebook to fall from above.

Of course, that didn’t happen.

But when he lowered his gaze, he noticed the scenery he had previously ignored.

A whole cliff of ice waterfall.

Right in front of him, behind his three teammates, the massive waterfall was like a galaxy falling, frozen in its most beautiful and spectacular moment by the cold winter. It was crystal clear, surging and flying, and if you listened closely, you could almost hear the sound of water like shattered jade curtains.

The ice waterfall seemed to respond to his searching gaze, suddenly reflecting a bright, crystal clear light!

Xu Wang was blinded and couldn’t open his eyes until the intense light faded. When he looked again, the words “Dragon Coiling and Tiger Crouching*” in golden characters appeared on the ice waterfall, as if written with a brush dipped in gold powder, strong and majestic!

*(龙盘虎踞) Idiom used to describe a place with a strategic geographical location that’s easy to defend but difficult to attack. It conveys a sense of grandeur or majesty of a location, suggesting the place is imposing like a tiger or dragon.

Stunned, Xu Wang watched for a while before reacting. The characters suddenly transformed from “Dragon Coiling and Tiger Crouching” to “Golden Wind and Jade Dew*”. It was then that he noticed a countdown in the upper left corner of the ice waterfall, starting from ten, then nine, eight…

*(风玉露) Idiom referring to the scenery of autumn.

Confused, Xu Wang’s changed expression was fully captured by Wu Sheng. “What happened? Where did that light come from?”

Coming back to his senses, Xu Wang hurriedly pointed forward. “There’s an ice waterfall on the cliff behind you. After that flash of light, words started appearing on the ice, first ‘Dragon Coiling and Tiger Crouching,’ then ‘Golden Wind and Jade Dew’…”

“Tweet tweet—”

A warning-like piercing whistle cut through the air. The countdown that had only two seconds left suddenly reset to ten seconds, and “Golden Wind and Jade Dew” disappeared, replaced by a new phrase “Summer Insect Speaks of Ice*.”

*(夏虫语冰) Idiom referring to someone who has limited experience and perspective trying to understand something beyond their capabilities, akin to a summer insect, which never experiences winter, to speak of ice and snow. Basically, someone who is shortsighted due to their limited experience or understanding and doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

“I get it!” Xu Wang had a moment of inspiration. “It wants us to play a guessing game with idioms! I describe, you guess, but I can’t say the words in the idiom, so when I just mentioned the literal words, the countdown ended early and switched to a new phrase!”

Wu Sheng understood, but judging by the look of “astonishment” in his eyes, it was obvious that the “level” he had gone through so much trouble to trigger was far from what he had originally expected.

Sun Jiang was outright internally fuming, his face clouded with a “are you fucking kidding me?” expression.

“I’m good at this. Our class played it last year at the party!” The happiest was Kuang Jinxin, forgetting the bear lying a foot under his feet, eyes brimming with eagerness. “Xu Ge, what’s the phrase now? Hurry and start!”

“Okay, but we only have ten seconds per word, and it changes after that, so we must be quick!” Xu Wang said in one breath, immediately turning to “Summer Insect Speaks of Ice” and started organizing his thoughts. “It’s like… someone… who’s quite narrow-minded…”

The countdown ended.

The ice waterfall changed to “A Face like Peach Blossoms*.”

(人面桃花) Refers to a woman’s appearance complementing peach blossoms. Later, it was used to describe when a man and woman fall in love by chance and the man reminisces about the past, evoking a sense of nostalgia and melancholy for past beauty.

Kuang Jinxin was mentally counting down, and as Xu Wang suddenly stopped, he quickly realized it was time for a new phrase, hurriedly suggesting. “Xu Ge, you don’t have to explain. You can use actions, context—whatever gets us there fastest!”

“Stay calm, don’t rush.” Wu Sheng also accepted reality and quickly got into “combat” mode. “We’ll guess together. Ten seconds is enough.”

His voice was steady, a stark contrast to when he’s mocking or joking, which made him a calming force.

The phrase changed again—“Friendship as Strong as Cutting One’s Throat*”.

*(颈之交) This is a bit of a literal translation. Idiom referring to a friendship that’s so strong and loyal that you are willing to risk your lives for each other’s sake, sharing a bond of life and death (literally cutting your own throat for your friend).

Xu Wang made a decisive move, lifting his hand in a gesture of cutting his own throat, repeatedly acting out, and saying, “Two people are very close, very close!”

Kuang Jinxin watched Xu Wang repeatedly pulling something from his neck to his chest when suddenly a lightbulb went off and his eyes suddenly brightened. “The Love of Boat Trackers*!”

*The joke here is that Kuang Jinxin thinks Wu Sheng’s action is “rowing” and the hint given, so he thought of The Love of Boat Trackers, which is not an idiom, but actually an (old) song by Yin Xiangjie feat. Yun Wenhua. From what I gather from the lyrics, it’s basically about the love between a girl and a boat rower. You can click on the YouTube link for the song and translation.

Xu Wang despaired. “Idioms! Idioms, brother!”

Are all people born after ’95 this nostalgic for oldies?!

The timer ended, and the words changed—“Hundred Years of Good Harmony*.”

*(百年好合) Idiom referring to the happy union of men and women. This is often used as a blessing for newlywed couples (like “Wishing you a lifetime of happiness together”).

Xu Wang went all out, blowing a kiss at Wu Sheng. “I want to join you in matrimony—what’s next?”

This was the context method Kuang Jinxin talked about, giving the first part to guide his teammates to say the next.

Wu Sheng caught the flying kiss and the underlying message his classmate wanted to convey. “Clouds and rain in Wushan*.”

*(巫山云雨) Idiom referring to (unite in) sexual intercourse. It comes from a story involving Yaoji, the Goddess of Wu Mountain (Wushan).

Xu Wang: “……”

Wu Sheng slightly frowned, surprised his answer wasn’t correct.

The joy between fish and water*?”

*(鱼水之欢) Yet another idiom referring to sex. Comes from “The Romance of the West Chamber” by Wang Shifu.

“……”

Blending like water and milk*?”

*(水乳交融) Idiom referring to blending in perfect harmony (meaning people getting along well with each other). In this context though, it means really well (if you get my drift).

“……”

Like dry wood and a blazing fire*?”

*(干柴烈火) Idiom referring to passionate sex.

“Can you stop thinking dirty?!”

With Xu Wang’s desperate shout, the phrase changed.

No one noticed the black bear lying on the ground had moved slightly.

Kinky Thoughts:

Just a note: It is highly recommended you read the translation notes, as they give a bigger context to understanding the game and also a lot of the jokes in this novel. Many items/props (stationery) in this novel are also idioms or cultural references, so it’s best to understand them to get a better picture of how they work.

Chapter 3: Stationery Box

Xu Wang’s original intention was simply to divert the topic to avoid bringing up yesterday’s “foolish actions”. But as the conversation turned, the shadow of these two consecutive days of bizarre encounters spread over him.

Wu Sheng, thrown off by his barrage of questions, had forgotten what he was initially going to say and could only shake his head in response to Xu Wang’s inquiries. “If I had known, I wouldn’t have met you after so long in casual clothes yesterday. At least I should have dressed more formally to show respect to an old classmate like you.”

“You serious? Those were pajamas.” Xu Wang realized that despite ten years passing, some things never change—like Wu Sheng’s insistence on maintaining his dignity no matter the circumstance and his own instinctive desire to tease. It was as if both their essences had weathered through all trials without changing at all.

A deliberate cough of impatience broke the “peaceful and harmonious” atmosphere. “Do we really have such a lack of presence?”

Xu Wang was startled and only then noticed two other people standing behind Wu Sheng—a man in his forties and another young man in his early twenties. The older man had a buzz cut, a lean face that was expressionless, hands in his pockets, and eyes full of irritation. The younger man had short hair, a round, fair, and clean face, and was almost as tall as Xu Wang’s 180 cm. He had handsome features but had a naive simplicity about him. As their eyes met, the young man gave off a friendly smile, his eyes narrowed into slits—definitely the “puppy” type according to the popular classification.

“Have you… been here all along?” Xu Wang genuinely hadn’t noticed them.

The young man nodded, cheerfully saying, “Yeah, yesterday too. We’ve been here all along, but you didn’t look at us…”

“Wait,” Xu Wang interrupted, swallowing hard. “Yesterday…?”

The young man scratched his head awkwardly, mumbling, “Yeah, seeing how engrossed you were, we didn’t feel like interrupting.”

Xu Wang: “……”

If anyone should feel embarrassed, it should be me. Why are you, as a bystander, acting embarrassed?!

Wu Sheng finally regained his rhythm, interjected by the young man’s assistance, stepped forward, and said, “Yesterday…”

“Yesterday, I fooled you all, right! Ha ha!” Xu Wang interrupted at breakneck speed, wearing a face of triumphant glee.

Wu Sheng was taken aback, his firm gaze faltering.

Xu Wang feigned surprise; his expression was so sincere that he could instantly win an Oscar. “No way, you didn’t really believe it, did you? I was just kidding yesterday!” He slapped Wu Sheng’s shoulder heartily, his tone and sly smile as familiar as ever. “A reunion of old classmates, of course, needs some special seasoning to be memorable.”

Wu Sheng stared at him for a long time, then slowly lowered his gaze.

Xu Wang knew that he believed him; the stormy expression on his face was proof. However, the other’s silence made him anxious because, based on his understanding of Wu Sheng, this person is definitely not one to suffer in silence. Whether bullied or tricked, he has a hundred cunning ways to retaliate. Thus, the current “extinguishing of fire” made him particularly unsettled.

Finally, Wu Sheng sighed deeply, crouched down, and started aimlessly drawing circles in the snow.

Xu Wang felt a bit guilty. After all, he was the one who made an impromptu confession, took advantage, and then said it was all in jest. Maybe Wu Sheng wasn’t the same impenetrable cool boy anymore; perhaps time had softened his heart…

With that thought, Xu Wang felt a pang of empathy and immediately crouched down to make amends. “Actually… Fuck!!!”

A fist-sized snowball rolled in from the back of his neck. The icy chill startled him into a leap. The snowball, on its conquering path, scattered into numerous flakes, intensely kissing every inch of skin on his back.

The culprit shook off the melted snow from his hand and smiled at Xu Wang, looking refreshed and cheerful.

“Wu Sheng, are you eight years old!” Xu Wang, having forgotten his recent antics of “adding spice to the reunion”, berated him through gritted teeth while lifting his clothes to shake off the snow. Focused on his battle with the snowball, he forgot about the injury on his shoulder, and a sudden movement caused him to sharply inhale from the pain.

“What’s wrong?” Wu Sheng stood up, the previous schadenfreude gone, replaced by a flicker of concern in his furrowed brow.

Xu Wang irritably opened his collar to reveal a bit of the bandaged shoulder.

Wu Sheng connected the dots. “The bear yesterday?”

“What else. I’m already this miserable, and you still pelt me with snowballs. Have you no humanity!” Xu Wang was infuriated, though the pain from the injury had already subsided. What truly stung was falling for Wu Sheng’s childish trick!

“Considering how spirited you are, the injury can’t be that serious.” Wu Sheng teased, though the sight of the white bandage still bothered him.

Xu Wang didn’t feel like arguing anymore. He just wanted to know, “What should we do? Is there any other way back to reality besides being pounced on by a bear?”

Wu Sheng became serious, his gaze earnest.

Xu Wang noticed that Wu Sheng still had that exceptional focus when it came to serious matters.

“First, this isn’t a dream. You, me, and them are all real. That should be a common understanding by now; second, according to the roster, we four are currently a team, and according to the cheat sheet, we need to head to a coordinate; third, what we’re supposed to do after reaching the coordinate is unclear because after you disappeared yesterday, the three of us reached the coordinate, but nothing happened. So, I guess full attendance might be a necessary condition to trigger an event or update the prompt; fourth…”

Xu Wang’s head was starting to hurt from all the information, and he raised his hand. “Can I take notes on a small notebook or something?”

“Last point,” Wu Sheng continued undeterred, looking intently into his eyes. “If you get pounced on by a bear again and return to the real world, just stand still and don’t move.”

“Why?” Xu Wang asked.

“Because as a team, we need to meet up in reality, and yesterday, Xiao* Kuang and I drove all over Beijing looking for you, almost getting lost near Xizhimen Bridge,” Wu Sheng explained.

*Little/small () Often, it’s used as an address for someone who is younger or lower rank than you. It signifies familiarity and closeness with that person.

“Xiao Kuang?”

The fair young man, with a naive smile on his face, raised his hand. “Kuang Jinxin.”

Xu Wang quickly shook hands with his comrade. “Xu Wang.” He then turned back to Wu Sheng, returning to the topic. “Do I really have to stand still? That’s a crossroads, quite an awkward place, with all the traffic…”

“Do you want to resolve this quickly?” Wu Sheng frowned.

“I do!” Xu Wang didn’t hesitate.

Wu Sheng: “Then why all the questions?”

Xu Wang: “What I mean is, wouldn’t it be more efficient and safer if I just give you my phone number now?”

“……”

The older man, who had been silent until now, finally lost his patience and kicked the snow in front of him. “Can we start getting serious about this now? I don’t want to be dragged here every night. I’m going crazy!”

Xu Wang understood his frustration. Anyone suddenly dragged into such a magical place would be at their wit’s end. He was about to speak up to calm everyone down and make introductions to foster camaraderie when suddenly his sixth sense kicked in.

The air had quieted down, so silent that even the sound of the kicked snowflakes falling was crystal clear.

Xu Wang looked around nervously, and before he could make sense of it, he was suddenly tackled!

He hit the snow with the back of his head, looking up at Wu Sheng on top of him, unsure if this was a sign of impending doom or an impending boon.

The other two didn’t need to be tackled. As if they had rehearsed, two loud thumps could be heard as they dropped to the ground.

With Wu Sheng on top of him, Xu Wang couldn’t see anything but him, but the increasingly loud footsteps and the muffled growls of a bear!

And it wasn’t just one!

Xu Wang tensed up, daring not to move, while Wu Sheng suddenly grabbed his arm and tapped it forcefully twice!

A fierce wind suddenly rose while the bears roared, but the wind was even more intense, drowning out their roars!

As if anticipating this, Wu Sheng didn’t look around at the changing surroundings but instead pulled Xu Wang up and tapped his arm for the third time.

Xu Wang could see clearly this time. He had tapped on the [Stationery Box] from the four options on his arm, which displayed rows of grid-like slots akin to an inventory bar in a game. He didn’t know what item Wu Sheng had tapped that caused a gust of wind earlier, but the third tap was on the last remaining item in the box—[(Defensive) Jingle Bells].

As this icon disappeared, the [Stationery Box] was completely emptied, and suddenly, a sleigh appeared on the ground, drawn by four reindeer and adorned with jingling bells and Christmas wreaths.

Yes, a sleigh had just sprung up from the ground.

“Stop gawking!” Wu Sheng leapt up agilely onto the sleigh. Xu Wang snapped out of it, hurriedly clambered up to follow, and sat down inside, followed by Kuang Jinxin and the stern-faced older man. Once all four were seated, the reindeer, as if sensing their readiness, dashed off at a gallop. The sleigh broke through the air, whipping up frost and snow in its wake!

Xu Wang, watching the antlers before him, exclaimed from the bottom of his heart, “After this, nothing will surprise me, really.”

Kuang Jinxin squeezed next to him, patted his shoulder, and kindly suggested, “Brother, you might want to take another look behind us.”

Xu Wang turned back. The speeding sleigh had put a considerable distance between them and the black bears, but he could still clearly see a “tornado” that had diverted the bear pack.

The tornado was a spectacular sight, whirling and howling. The bears jumped around, trying to catch the densely packed, lively fish leaping about in a frenzy inside the tornado.

Xu Wang slowly withdrew his gaze, genuinely repentant for his previous bravado. “I’m sorry, I was too naive.”

Kuang Jinxin looked excited, finally finding a “kindred spirit”. “I felt the same yesterday. When I first saw the icon in the stationery box, I was like, ‘What is a [Fishnado]?’ But when I used it, I was stunned. It opened a new world for me!”

Fish… nado*?” Xu Wang wanted to discuss life choices with whoever named it.

*In Chinese, tornado is [long juan feng] (龙卷风) which broken down means dragon rolling winds. This is a play on that word and replaces the dragon () with fish () becoming fish rolling winds [yu juan feng] (鱼卷风).

Kuang Jinxin enthusiastically continued, “Yeah, it’s called ‘Fishnado’. It and ‘Jingle Bells’ seem to be the default items in everyone’s stationery box who enters here. The three of us have it, but Wu Ge’s* was used up yesterday. Mine and Sun Ge’s disappeared today when we came in again. I’m not sure why, but luckily yours was still there.”

*Brother () Term used often by someone younger to refer to someone who is male, who’s older or higher rank than you and whom you have a good relationship with or respect.

Xu Wang nodded, acknowledging his “unexpected gain”, and turned to the stern-faced older man beside him, extending a hand of friendship. “Sun Ge?”

The stern-faced older man hesitated, his mood instinctively not wanting to respond to such idle pleasantries, but since one does not hit a smiling face, he reluctantly reached out his hand. “Sun Jiang.”

Just as Xu Wang was about to say something more, he felt a shadow in his peripheral vision. Instinctively turning back, he saw a bear’s paw swooping towards him!

Xu Wang was too slow to react, feeling the bear’s claws nearly graze his eyelashes, when suddenly someone pulled him back by the nape of his neck, tilting his body just in time to avoid the deadly strike!

“Move forward!” Wu Sheng released his grip on Xu Wang’s collar, sharply instructing the entire team. Not needing to be told, everyone had already leaned forward, with Kuang Jinxin nearly sprawled on a reindeer’s back.

As the reindeer ran faster, the undeterred black bear relentlessly pursued them, its speed not befitting a bear but more like a leopard!

Xu Wang maintained his backward glance, fixated on the bear that wasn’t lured away by the Fishnado, watching as it closed in once again—closer, even closer—and suddenly lunged forward, its paws catching onto the back of the sleigh!

Xu Wang was going mad.

What kind of place was this? Who had dragged them into this? And did such a dangerous activity even have a business license?!

Chapter 2: Meeting Again

The closed hallway nearly crumbled from his shout, leaving the locksmith with ringing ears. Just then, an old lady hurried down from upstairs towards the “scene” while wearing a red armband*.

*People who wear these are seen kind of like enforcers at the grassroots level. Think neighborhood watch (but like more extreme).

Any remaining doubts were suppressed by the undeniable aura of righteousness. After Auntie Li repeatedly confirmed that Xu Wang indeed lived there and was a promising young man, the locksmith used a thin strip of metal to open the lock with a quick “click” that was so fast, Xu Wang wondered if he had even locked the door.

He rushed into the apartment, closed the door swiftly behind him, quickly put on a T-shirt, then opened the door again more calmly to pay the locksmith.

Finally sitting back down on the living room sofa, the day had already well begun.

Xu Wang first called in sick at work, then went to the hospital with his phone, wallet, and insurance card to have his injuries checked. Even when the doctor asked how he was injured, he was still bewildered.

He didn’t remember what he told the doctor, but it certainly wasn’t anything as provocative as “a promising young man in the capital’s third ring* was greeted by a bear’s paw.”

*In Beijing, there are multiple ring roads with the most prominent being 1st-7th.

Returning from the hospital around noon, Xu Wang sat back down on his sofa in his rented apartment, finally able to somewhat process everything that had happened.

He had come home from work, gone to bed at the usual time, then had a dream about a snowfield, his high school crush—unrequited love—and a belated confession ten years late. He achieved a moment of closeness, only to be tackled by a black bear, waking up at a street intersection.

If it weren’t for the injury on his shoulder, he might have explained his waking location as sleepwalking. But if everything that happened was real, where did Wu Sheng and the bear go? And although it was his first time being hit by a bear, common sense told him a bear swipe should be more than just a flesh wound; shouldn’t there be fractures or breaks?

Xu Wang spent the entire afternoon on the living room sofa, continuously pondering the bizarre events of the previous night, but as darkness fell and the living room sank into unlit quiet, he was no closer to making sense of it all.

Forget it. Let’s not think about it anymore.

Xu Wang shook his head and suddenly stood up. Because the movement was too quick, it agitated his shoulder wound. He paused, then carefully made his way to the bathroom to wash his face and brush his teeth, hoping the cold water would clear his mind and refresh him.

This was a harmonious society working towards prosperity under a clear, bright sky. If it was sleepwalking, he would seek treatment; if there were wrongdoers involved, he would report it to the police. He was a strong, democratic, patriotic, and dedicated person. What did he have to fear!

20:00

21:00

22:00

23:00

23:30…

But he couldn’t sleep.

The shoulder still hurt, and the mysteries were unresolved. How could he sleep with so much on his mind!

He turned on the flashlight on his phone and looked around the bedroom—nothing unusual; checked his clothing—down jacket, thermal pants, sneakers, all good; felt his pockets for keys and wallet—everything in place.

Whether it was sleepwalking or not, he didn’t want to go through another ordeal of freezing and then borrowing Mrs. Li’s phone to call the locksmith.

[Hoot hoot—]

Again, the sound seemed to come from inside his ear!

Xu Wang tensed up, and vague memories started flooding back. Just before he had fallen into the snowfield and met Wu Sheng the night before, he had heard this sound!

At that time, he thought it was a figment of his dream, but now, awake and more alert than ever, he was sure it was some kind of bird call, fitting perfectly with the night, carried by the wind into the ears of those afraid, with amplified menace.

The resurfacing memories included more than just the call.

Xu Wang hurriedly got out of bed, disregarding any pain from his wound, determined to find out what was happening.

He ran to the living room and heard the sound again.

[Hoot hoot—]

Then, rustling noises came from the bedroom.

Standing two meters away from the bedroom door, Xu Wang peered in to see that the bed, which was against the wall, had turned into a rectangular pit of quicksand, glowing with a halo. There was no longer any sign of the mattress or sheets—just the endless sinking sand.

Fortunately, the bird call had prompted him to remember fragments of the previous night, or he would have been drawn into that eerie place again. While meeting Wu Sheng might have been pleasant, it was all a fantasy. Wu Sheng had moved abroad with his parents hundreds of years ago. The pain from the bear swipe, however, was very real.

Huh?

Huh??

Xu Wang was feeling lucky to have escaped a disaster when suddenly he felt a force pulling him towards the bedroom! In the blink of an eye, he was dragged to the bedroom door!

Using all his might, Xu Wang clung to the door frame, refusing to let go, but the force kept growing stronger until he was lifted off the ground, flapping like a flag in a fierce wind!

Realizing that continuing to resist would tear him in half, Xu Wang gave up and let go in despair.

As he was sucked into the quicksand pit, two thoughts crossed Xu Wang’s mind: First, this situation was too damn surreal, and he must call the police, even if they think he’s crazy; and second, if Wu Sheng was still there, they should find a place without bears to embrace again.

Last time, he fell into that bizarre place in a deep sleep, completely bewildered, until he saw Wu Sheng, which slowly brought clarity to his mind. He couldn’t remember how he got there or how long he wandered around the snowfield.

But this time he was awake and experienced the sensation of falling from a great height, like being on a drop tower ride, endlessly descending at a rapid speed, which made him feel as if his entire body was shattering.

After an unknown amount of time, his cheek suddenly felt extremely cold—first icy, then slowly damp.

It took Xu Wang a while to realize he had landed face down in the snow.

He sighed in relief, his suspended organs finally settling back into place. At this point, whether he looked graceful or not, it didn’t matter anymore. At least he was alive and once again felt the comforting pull of Earth’s gravity.

With the snow as thick as his skin, he got up, dusting himself off, once again looking like a respectable young man. Surveying his surroundings, the snowfield, the sea of forest, the vast sky, and the distant mountains were all unmistakably the same place as yesterday.

Is this a “dream”?

Even if Xu Wang stubbornly wanted to believe so, his ten red fingers disagreed—clinging to the door frame had strained them too much, and they were still throbbing painfully.

It was extremely cold standing still in the icy wilderness. Soon, Xu Wang’s feet began to numb. He quickly started walking, directionless and unsure of where to go, just moving forward to keep his body warm.

After an unknown period, a short, crisp “ding—” sound unexpectedly rang out.

Xu Wang’s heart tightened at the sound.

At first, it sounded like the bell used in restaurant kitchens to signal that dishes were ready, but soon he realized something was off. Unlike the eerie sounds that seemed to originate from deep within his eardrum, that “ding” seemed to come from his… left arm?

Xu Wang immediately stopped and rolled up his sleeve, but after much effort, he couldn’t lift the tight-down jacket. He patted his arm through the clothing and felt nothing unusual. Still uneasy, he decided to remove half of his jacket, leaving only his thermal sweater, and finally pulled it up to his elbow, exposing his entire forearm.

In the next moment, Xu Wang’s eyes widened, stunned in the chilly wind.

There appeared a diamond-shaped pattern on his forearm, looking like a light-colored tattoo. At the center was the face of an owl, with a character “鸮*” below it, resembling the logo of a mobile app.

*It means owl.

As a real estate consultant who had long battled in the sales office of off-plan properties*, a refined young man who only needed to show owners the model and mark maps for the boss, almost completely shielded from the wind and sun, Xu Wang swore that before being dragged into the quicksand, his arm was as pale as a lotus root. Even more peculiarly, there was now a tiny “1” hanging above the right side of the owl’s face.

*These are properties from which developers are still in the process of developing them. Buyers can sign pre-sale contracts and purchase real estate during this time. Basically, they buy the properties before they are fully constructed.

No young person in the era of smartphones could resist tapping on it.

Absolutely none.

His fingers, both fearful and irresistibly curious, finally touched the owl’s face. The diamond-shaped pattern instantly disappeared, replaced by four options: [Roster], [Stationery Box], [Cheat Sheet], [Report Card (1)].

His forearm was now a horizontal phone screen. The icons were apps, and the options were system menus. The interface was so familiar that Xu Wang seamlessly accessed it, naturally clicking on the source of the new message, [Report Card].

The interface switched, displaying a top message scrolling from left to right: [Su Mingzhan, Tao Anan, Wei Tianhang, Yue Shuai, 3/23 Paper Submission.]

Clearly, that “ding” sound was the notification for this message.

But what is 3/23? And what does “turn in papers” mean?

Below the continually scrolling message were two lists: [Total Score] and [Paper Submission Speed].

Xu Wang wanted to explore more but suddenly felt a breeze at the back of his head!

He wasn’t the type to fall into the same trap twice, so he immediately plunged forward into the snow, motionless as if dead!

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds…

“You only need to play dead with a bear attack, not with me.” A voice holding back laughter came from above him. “Last night was the first time all of us came here, and everyone had varying degrees of panic. Your reaction was certainly the most bizarre among those panics, but there’s no need to feel too embarrassed to face me.”

It was Wu Sheng.

Without looking, just by hearing, Xu Wang could identify that guy’s voice down to the last detail.

Everything was real. The eerie realm, Wu Sheng ten years later, and his confession as if his brain was squashed by a door. Now, Xu Wang’s only wish was for the sky to fall and the ground to crack open so he could crawl into the ground.

Of course, such dejected thoughts lasted only a moment.

In Xu Wang’s dictionary, there was no dead end, only a desperate counterattack. No matter how disadvantaged, he would dance to his own beat and bring everyone into his rhythm to sway together—

“Wu Sheng?!” Accompanied by this genuine shout, Xu Wang sprang up, excitedly grabbing his old friend’s hands, his face full of the surprise of a long-awaited reunion. “Is it really you?!”

The smile froze in Wu Sheng’s eyes, then slowly turned into a look of indescribable complexity. “Are you sure this is what you should be saying today instead of yesterday?”

Xu Wang pretended to ignore it, maintaining his emotional momentum, continuing his “Best Actor journey”. “Aren’t you abroad?”

“Returned to China to start a business.”

“In Beijing?”

“In Beijing.”

Xu Wang paused for a few seconds. The joy that had just bubbled up in his eyes at the news of “Wu Sheng returning to China” was gradually replaced by massive confusion. His voice was devoid of jokes, and only a bewildered concern remained. “Then where… is this?”

Chapter 1: Snowfield

Xu Wang never thought he would meet Wu Sheng again in his life, not even in his dreams.

But he did.

In the vast snowfield and the white forest sea, he wore only a pair of shorts, shivering with his arms crossed, devoid of his usual eloquence and handsomeness. In the worst state imaginable, he met the white moonlight* of his heart from high school.

*Refers to someone or something that’s beyond reach. It’s always in your heart, but not around you. It comes from Red Rose and White Rose by Eileen Chang.

Most likely to go along with his dream, Wu Sheng also wore a set of pajamas that clashed terribly with the surrounding environment. The linen-striped long sleeves were slightly better than his bare chest for warding off the cold, but only slightly. His nose was also red from the cold, yet he stood there with determination, not moving an inch or even frowning. Apart from the youthful features of the past, his face now bore a bit more maturity and steadiness. Everything else about him reminded Xu Wang of the time when he, representing his grade, got tangled up while raising the flag during a ceremony. Amidst the mocking laughter of the other students, he agilely climbed up the pole to untangle the flag, then slid down like Mario to continue hoisting it, eventually triumphing over the entire scene.

What was most unforgettable about this guy was his unshakable position as the top of their grade from the first to the third year of high school and the increasingly outrageous way he… showed off.

Yet, Xu Wang liked his bravado, so much so that he secretly imitated him climbing the flagpole several times… But let’s not reminisce about those unhappy memories during this rare reunion.

“Wu Sheng.” Xu Wang thought there might be some estrangement calling out a name he hadn’t said in ten years, but there wasn’t. The name came out as smoothly as if it had been turned over in his heart countless times, instantly taking him back to those days. A gentle warmth bubbled up from within his heart.

The surprise in Wu Sheng’s eyes deepened—he was already surprised when they unexpectedly met in this snowy landscape, but now that his full name was called, the surprise spread from his eyes to his entire face. Even the person who didn’t frown while walking in pajamas through a forest of snow was momentarily at a loss for words. “You…”

Throughout high school, Xu Wang had never seen Wu Sheng, who spoke articulately, be at a loss for words. If it were the past, he could’ve teased him for an entire term. But now, he was too filled with anticipation, unable to take his eyes off the other, almost demanding an answer. “Yes, me…”

“High school…”

“Yes!”

“My bunkmate…”

“Yes, yes!”

Wu Sheng must have remembered. The astonishment slowly faded, his brows relaxed, and a familiar, confident smile that used to dominate the whole grade emerged in his eyes, frustrating and yet endearingly irresistible.

Xu Wang gazed at him unabashedly, and the corners of his mouth lifted while his heart bloomed with joy.

Finally, the other party extended a hand of friendship first. “Long time no see, Zhang Wang.”

Xu Wang: “…”

Is it illegal to hit someone in one’s own dream?

Xu Wang was so angry that he felt physical pain, clutching at his chest, unable to alleviate the sharp ache. On the other hand, Wu Sheng seemed even happier. Although he concealed it well, who was Xu Wang? The same person who had spent countless nights in the bunk bed below, fantasizing about the other through his sophomore and junior years—a young fool hopelessly infatuated. He was all too familiar with every microexpression on Wu Sheng’s face.

This guy was definitely doing it on purpose. Back in high school, he enjoyed making fun of Xu Wang. Of course, Xu Wang wasn’t a pushover; an eye for an eye* was always his policy. Even if he couldn’t outperform him academically, he never fell short in verbal sparring.

*You stab me with a knife, I’ll return with a sword. It’s expression referring to if someone harms someone, that person will retaliate, often with greater force or intensity.

But unexpectedly, even in his own dream, his brain’s construction of Wu Sheng didn’t soften his character in the slightest. There was not even a bit more tenderness.

Alright, Xu Wang slapped his face twice, chastising himself for being greedy, as greediness can lead to overreaching, like a snake trying to swallow an elephant. It was rare for him to have such a beautiful dream; rarer still was that this Wu Sheng, ten years later, remained the same familiar recipe with the same familiar smell and taste. Despite the cold weather and their thin clothes, it was only natural to come together in a warm embrace.

“Long time no see!”

Ignoring the extended hand, Xu Wang lunged for a bear hug, as if trying to dissolve all the regrets of the past in this embrace.

Wu Sheng, caught off guard, took a half-step back before steadying himself, stiffened.

Xu Wang didn’t care if the other was comfortable or not. His 1.81-meter-tall frame snuggled against the other’s chest like a bird as he marveled, “This dream… is worth dying for…”

Snow began to fall from the sky.

The snow was fine, with each flake landing on Xu Wang’s nose and on his cheek, which was rubbing against Wu Sheng’s striped pajama collar. It melted as soon as it touched, too fleeting to savor this beautiful scene.

In all honesty, Xu Wang initially felt satisfied just with the hug. But that’s how people are; once they taste sweetness, they always want more, sliding step by step into the abyss of sin. No one has ever dived headfirst into the river of sin.

“I like you. I’ve liked you since the second year of high school, and I still do. No matter how many properties I develop in my heart, it’s only you—only you, Wu Sheng. You hold the only piece of homestead land in my heart!”

Countless times in the dead of night, he reminisced about his youth, fantasizing about what might have happened if he had confessed his feelings back then. Time and again, he consoled himself with the thought, “It’s a good thing I didn’t say anything; otherwise, it would have hurt both of us.” But only Xu Wang knew deep down that this was the greatest regret buried deep in his heart.

Now, finally getting his wish, even if it was just a dream, he hoped to indulge before waking.

After confessing it all in one breath, regardless of how much the other party absorbed and digested, Xu Wang hugged him again, tighter and harder than before.

Wu Sheng didn’t dodge, possibly stunned by the candid confession, and was still in a daze of “Who are you? What are you saying? What do you want?”

Xu Wang took advantage of the moment, hugging thoroughly and contentedly, truly dying without regrets.

“Roar—”

Suddenly, a bitter cold wind struck Xu Wang from behind, accompanied by the roar of a wild beast. He shivered with fear, forgetting all about taking advantage of the situation, and swiftly turned around!

A black bear’s paw was even quicker than his turn, solidly hitting his shoulder with a “whoosh”.

“Dying without regrets” is just a metaphor. There’s no need to take it so seriously!

Xu Wang had lived for twenty-nine years, enduring many bumps and bruises, but only in this bear’s swipe did he truly understand what real pain was.

His brain froze, his body went numb, and he fell forward due to the bear’s swipe. Wu Sheng tried to catch him but failed, and they both toppled over together. As they fell into the thick snow, Xu Wang heard the bear’s roar again, this time closer and more ferocious.

He was going to die, and it seemed he might even drag Wu Sheng down with him.

It was like the start of a fairy tale, but the end of a horror movie. This dream was a complete failure.

His complaining was but a fleeting thought. The “voice in his ear” was articulate and clear, as if a little person was speaking right inside his ear canal, even with a mischievously eerie tone—

[Owl: Dear~ I’m giving you an early holiday. Sending you home.]

Suddenly, everything in front of Xu Wang turned white, like countless spotlights shining brightly at him. Instinctively, he closed his eyes, and in a moment, Wu Sheng beneath him disappeared, and he fell solidly to the ground with a crisp and pleasing “plop” sound.

The snow had stopped, the sky had darkened, Wu Sheng was gone, and so was the murderous bear.

Xu Wang got up in confusion, looking around, but the vast white snow and expansive forest were gone. He was downstairs of the apartment he rented, in the pitch-black early 4 a.m., standing on the hard asphalt ground, with shops all around him all closed. Even the breakfast spots were just beginning to bustle with early preparations.

“Beep beep—”

The urgent honking of a car horn brought Xu Wang back to reality. He realized he was standing in the middle of a crossroads and quickly walked to the sidewalk. The familiar breakfast shop owner, bent over, came out from the half-opened shutter door to take out the trash. Seeing him, the owner expressed surprise and greeted him with a strong local accent. “How come you’re so…”

The owner meant to say “early”, but as he spoke, he noticed Xu Wang’s attire—a bare chest and a pair of black loose shorts. To be fair, Xu Wang usually looked quite slender in a suit and tie, but now, with his shirt off, his well-defined muscles were indeed pleasing to the eye. However, you can’t just flaunt yourself in the late autumn cold like this.

But he already started speaking, so the owner could only awkwardly add, “…so cool.”

Xu Wang looked down at himself and then up at the owner, unable to distinguish between dream and reality. If this were a dream, would it be this serial-like? If this were reality, how did he go from sleeping soundly in his bed to standing on the street, suddenly sleepwalking after twenty-nine years of life?

“Hiss—”

A sudden pain made Xu Wang gasp, instinctively reaching to touch his back, only to find it wet and sticky.

He froze, both hurt and panicked, so much so that he hesitated to bring his hand back to look. He really wished he was just sleepwalking now.

The awkward position of reaching to his back was too much for the breakfast shop owner, who asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing,” Xu Wang forced a smile, quickly excusing himself before running into the building.

Thankfully it was still not fully bright outside. Otherwise, he might have frightened someone.

The breakfast shop owner was spared a shock, leaving only Xu Wang himself in fright—under the bright motion sensor light, he opened his palm to find it blood-red.

Wearing only his underwear, he couldn’t enter his home and had to wait miserably in the hallway. Finally, as the sky brightened, he saw Mrs. Li coming down for her morning walk.

Mrs. Li’s eyesight wasn’t great, but she had a warm heart. Upon hearing that he had forgotten his keys at home, she didn’t ponder too much why the young man, who usually wore suits and leather shoes, was dressed so “casually” today. Without a second thought, she lent him her phone.

In the hallway filled with dense, cluttered advertisements, Xu Wang found a locksmith service that seemed honest and simple, without flashy typography, known as “Police-Registered Locksmith King.” He then thanked Mrs. Li and politely declined her invitation to “come up and sit for a while,” maintaining his position with his back against the security door as he watched her go downstairs.

The wound on his back had already been clotted by blood, barely noticeable against the black security door.

The locksmith, a very young man, arrived slowly, so much so that Mrs. Li had already returned from her walk. Despite his apparent tiredness and continuous yawning, suggesting he was called to work early, the locksmith became instantly wary upon seeing Xu Wang’s scantily clad figure.

Feeling guilty, Xu Wang had already clenched his blood-stained hand into a fist but was still not reassured, instinctively hiding it behind his back.

A glint appeared in the young locksmith’s eyes, and just as he was about to speak, Xu Wang was quicker, bellowing out a cry that could shatter stones. “Mrs. Li—”.

Kinky Thoughts:

Yet another recommendation from a friend. I quite like this author since I read Suddenly Trending and I have been interested in picking this novel up for quite some time.

It’s an unlimited flow novel that centers around puzzle solving and is less serious than other UF, but quite hilarious.

Here’s the official art from the book publishers. You can buy them here.

Alt covers from a different publisher.
