Chapter 59: The Crazy Guardian

Anakin’s palms were sweaty. She ignored Solo, who was trying to whisper to her, her eyes occasionally sweeping over the line that read “Player Privileges”.

To sign or not to sign? …The punishment was too excessive. Honestly, she didn’t want to sign, but did she have a choice?

There were two handsome NPCs in front of her, one of which had a gentle and shy expression but could directly “deprive Player Privileges”; the other one, with a smile more enchanting than a succubus, could bind them with golden thread and slice them into thin meats for dumplings. After such an ordeal, she would definitely have handsome-guy PTSD.

Stay calm and think carefully.

The requirements of the covenant and the quest’s “one problem” were almost overlapping. If it was just assisting in saving the succubus tribe, it was beneficial for them.

Keeping the secret of the Mad Monk… seemed to be no problem either.

Most Players were staunch atheists, regardless of whether the local religion was disgraceful or not. Moreover, the Mad Monk hadn’t killed any Players. Anakin’s bottom line was somewhat flexible on this aspect.

What she cared more about was whether the phrase “we might become friends” was related to the “goodwill of a certain existence” in the quest reward?

Anakin would never have made such a ridiculous guess before, but the black-haired young man could even take away Players Privileges, so this was hard to say.

In any case, that guy wasn’t someone they could afford to offend.

Anakin extended her hand. Magical power condensed at her fingertips, and she decisively signed her name. Seeing her do it, Solo also signed his name without hesitation.

“Thank you both for your cooperation. Let me reintroduce myself. You can call me Nol.” Nol bowed slightly. “Next, please do us a small favor—please get the Investigation Knights to leave here as soon as possible. They don’t need to withdraw too far. Just out of the Black Forest will do.”

It seems that these two are still constrained by the Investigation Knights! Rogue Solo sighed in relief. However, Nol’s next words shattered his illusion—

“This is also for their safety,” Nol said. “I don’t want to be enemies with the Temple of Life so soon.”

Anakin, Solo: “.…..”

Anakin: “I understand. Is there anything else we need to do?”

“Yes,” Nol said. “Please witness till the end.”

After dealing with the Players, Nol locked himself in the bedroom.

This time he didn’t even ask the succubi for parchment but directly drew traces in the air with blue fire. Countless formulas and numbers floated gently, like decaying debris drifting deep underwater.

Nol sat at the bottom of this vortex, holding a staff burning with blue flame, as quiet as whale bones half-covered in mud.

Teest closed the door gently, leaving the focused Nol alone in the room. He quietly closed the door behind him, and the originally curled and shaking tail fell down.

Teest could feel Nol’s anger.

This time his anger was like magma beneath a volcano—more restrained and more dangerous. And he himself was like a beautiful vase standing on the edge of a table, half hanging in the air. Just a gentle touch, and he could return to a safe area or fall and shatter.

It was hard to look away.

…Should he push him down or push him back?

The vase filled with blue flowers, shining beautifully, would probably make a pleasant sound when it shatters. The blooming flowers falling into the crimson liquid would began to wither and rot from that moment. The smooth curves would turn into sharp fragments, creating a fascinating contrast. Teest was quite tempted.

But if he did that, he would never see those flowers again. It was truly difficult.

In the deserted corridor, Teest leaned against the door, struggling seriously for a long time.

In the end, he opened the window opposite the door and jumped into the eternal and unchanging mist. He didn’t turn back to open that door.

…..

In a certain cave, Ma Zhigang was curled up asleep on a hard stone slab.

He was accustomed to sleeping in this position. In his early years, moving from relative to relative, he could only sleep wherever space was temporarily made for him. From window sills without mattresses to creaky sofa beds, he knew well how to make himself comfortable.

He dreamed of a time not long ago—

Ma Zhigang sat in a spacious and grand office. Above his head hung calligraphy filled with flowing, elegant script. The furniture was custom-made from high-quality wood and painted with shiny lacquer. The water ornament on the desk had been specifically chosen by a feng shui master, and the money tree by the window was particularly vibrant.

He wasn’t yet sixty, in the prime of life, and he especially loved the cautious looks the younger people gave him.

The phone on the desk vibrated twice. It was a WeChat message from his daughter.

His daughter, Ma Moli, attended the best undergraduate programs domestically and then pursued her master’s degree at a renowned university abroad. Active and filial, she made the Ma family very proud.

However, there was one bad thing—since she got married, she had become more and more sensitive.

[Moli: Dad, I checked his cellphone yesterday, and he was making dirty jokes with his female colleagues.]

Ma Zhigang frowned and sent a voice message. “Did he sleep with her?”

His daughter instantly replied.

[Moli: No, but this isn’t the first or second time. Dad, I just got pregnant!]

“If he didn’t sleep with her, then just control him better,” Ma Zhigang said.

[Moli: I kind of want a divorce.]

Ma Zhigang felt a headache coming on. “Why are you so impulsive? He hasn’t slept with anyone and hasn’t solicited whores. Why are you making a fuss?”

Not long ago, the department Ma Moli worked in was dissolved by the company. Around the same time, she found out she was pregnant and had to stay at home.

Since then, his daughter became more and more neurotic, complaining either about “the in-laws thinking she is wasting money by hiring a nanny”, “her husband’s relatives overstaying their welcome at home”, or about “her husband talking too much with female colleagues”, or “being upset because she can’t find a job recently”.

Ma Zhigang thought for a while and sent a few more voice messages.

“You’re intelligent. You can make your marriage work. I don’t believe my daughter, who’s so highly educated, can’t control her husband.”

“If you want to work, wait until you have the child. With your qualifications, there should be no problem. If you can’t make it, what about those who are less qualified? Are they begging for food with golden bowls*?”

*Metaphor referring to not utilizing one’s own capabilities and instead begging for help from others. You have good objective conditions but are unable to solve your life problems despite that.

This time, Ma Moli took a long time before replying, “I know.”

After that, Ma Moli really did complain less.

Sometimes, she would just ask if they could have a meal together. Sometimes Ma Zhigang would agree, but more often, he would refuse. His factory was extremely busy, and he wanted to earn money for a few more years.

His daughter would be fine. She was intelligent. Not to brag, but Ma Moli’s living conditions were better than 90% of the girls in the country. Once she had her child, she wouldn’t have so much idle time to worry about these trivial things.

Until one day, she sent another message.

[Moli: I checked his cellphone yesterday, and he’s still chatting with his female colleague. His parents said it’s my problem…]

Here we go again. Ma Zhigang replied routinely, “Did he sleep with her?”

Ma Moli’s reply came late.

[Moli: How about having dinner together tomorrow? I want to talk to you.]

“I have a meeting tomorrow. If you have something to say, just say it,” Ma Zhigang said. “If it’s about those trivial things, talk to your peers.”

It took a long time before Ma Moli responded.

[Moli: Dad, do you love me?]

Ma Zhigang paused for a moment. “What nonsense are you thinking about every day? You’re a mother, don’t you know? Who do you think I am working so hard for at this age?”

Ma Moli didn’t send another reply.

That was the last thing she said in this world.

Ma Zhigang didn’t understand. His daughter had a life of luxury; happier than any woman he had seen in his early years. Now she even had her own child. Wasn’t it said that mothers are strong? Why did she give up?

His daughter was clearly cheerful and strong, just like him. And he had suffered much more than her. Why did she give up?

Ma Zhigang couldn’t work anymore. He pondered this during the day, and at night, when he couldn’t sleep, he continued to ponder. He hadn’t shed a tear, but his hair visibly turned white quickly.

After the incident, his son-in-law moved out with the child. Ma Zhigang moved into his daughter’s room, paranoid about every mark on the wall. He sat in the security booth of Joy Garden, staring at the spot where his daughter fell every day.

Over a year had passed, and he still couldn’t understand why, and he didn’t know who to ask.

…Until he came to this absurd world.

During his escape, Ma Zhigang accidentally discovered the succubus queen hidden deep in the forest.

She looked nothing like Ma Moli, except for those eyes. Those eyes were too similar. The last time he had a meal with his daughter, Ma Moli had the same eyes.

Those eyes were blank, seemingly looking at people but also elsewhere. The pupils moved like unlubricated gears, almost creaking.

So Ma Zhigang stopped. He really did want an answer, he thought. Maybe this girl knew something.

When he occasionally fell asleep, he still dreamt like this of the past. In his dream, he held his phone, and his daughter on the other side of the screen was waiting for his reply.

Dad, can we have dinner together tomorrow?

Dad, do you love me?

Dad…

He saw his little daughter running to him, holding her test paper, her face full of pride.

…Dad, I got a perfect score!

He smiled at her; a warm, broad smile.

When Ma Zhigang woke up, the smile on his face hadn’t faded. He saw the silver hair tips and instantly sprung up, rolling and crawling.

“It seems you had a good dream,” Teest said.

At his side, the current queen, Wilimina, was firmly bound in place by golden threads. She didn’t struggle at all, like a breathing corpse. Her light golden hair was extremely dry, and her silver eyes were murky and lightless.

“I’ve always been curious about what ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ looks like. I must say, I really didn’t expect this,” Teest said pleasantly, his gaze sweeping over the Succubus Queen’s head.

The so-called crown was nothing but a light red petal hidden among her hair. It appeared and disappeared among her hair, exuding a lively and playful vitality that was completely unobtrusive. The necklace was a pink line near the collarbone, looking like the imprint of a few small flowers, as if the wearer had just taken a nap in the flowers.

Two earrings turned into two small red moles on her snowy white skin, lightly dotting her earlobes, bright as two beads of blood.

If he hadn’t known that the queen was wearing a full set of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, even Teest would find it hard to see that she was wearing jewelry. They blended seamlessly with her, hidden in breathtaking details, full of unique charm.

However, considering that the Succubus Queen was essentially a living skeleton, this charm was significantly discounted. Teest withdrew his gaze immediately upon touching her, showing obvious disinterest.

“How… How did you do it? Why are you alright?” Uncle Ma exclaimed in shock. “That set is cursed!”

“Cursed?” Teest asked curiously.

“The curse that makes everyone go crazy.” Ma Zhigang looked up and down at Teest. “How come you have no reaction?”

“Don’t you also have no reaction?” Teest shrugged.

“How could I not! I can’t help but see her as my daughter. I can’t leave her alone. According to her, I am already in the best situation,” Uncle Ma muttered, “and you only glanced at her!”

“A bit of resistance, strict training, and a clear mind.”

Teest casually played with the golden threads between his fingers. “I was also affected. She actually ranks second on my ‘It Would Be a Pity If They Died’ list.”

Uncle Ma stared dumbfoundedly at Teest, but it was the corpse-like queen who took the initiative to speak.

“You’re not a succubus of the Black Forest.” Her voice was like shredded silk, soft and rough. “…Why are you looking for me?”

“Your brethren all want to take you back.” Teest didn’t answer her question but spoke his mind.

The current queen shuddered instantly, showing a fearful expression. She finally looked like a living being. “No, I’m not going back… I don’t want to see them…”

Teest sighed. “That’s what I was worried about. If you two run around at a critical moment, it would be troublesome.”

The queen, with her lifeless eyes, stared at Teest, who squatted in front of her.

“Indeed, the so-called curse is ‘being madly adored by everyone’,” Teest said softly. “It’s quite close to what I guessed… My poor husband is probably still wondering what went wrong.”

His Mr. Lich knew all but was oblivious to the dark side of everything.

For succubi, a race even more dependent on social interactions than humans, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” could only be a curious toy and could never be worn for long.

The one who was madly adored by everyone was destined to be an illusion. Regardless of how perfect it seemed, an illusion was just an illusion. The one enveloped by the illusion and “being forgotten by everyone”, were no different—even if a donkey wore “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, it could receive undifferentiated love from everyone.

Everyone was looking at you, but no one saw you. Family, friends, lovers… all their faces turned into a bottomless well. Whether desperately asking for help, passionate confessions, or nonsensical screams, the well only echoed the same response.

From the moment she wore “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, the Queen of the Succubi permanently exiled herself.

Enduring pain on one side to protect her tribe and suffering terrible loneliness within her tribe on the other. Wasn’t this also a curse?

The queen slouched in the dim cave, her robe dirty and her tail lifeless in the sand. She neurotically scratched her neck, where the skin seemed to be broken repeatedly, and fresh, white flesh protruded beneath the layers of scabs.

“I won’t go back. I won’t go back.” She murmured while scratching, her fingers twitching as if restraining the urge to rip off that necklace. “I won’t go back. I can’t stand their gazes…”

“Alright, alright, you won’t go back.”

Uncle Ma, bypassing Teest, approached the queen. Ma Zhigang cautiously retracted his limbs, letting the queen lean on his shoulder.

“If you don’t want to go back, we won’t go back,” he said, like coaxing a child. “You’ve done enough for them. You’ve tried your best… Just live and sleep if you want!”

The queen’s breathing became steadier. Her eyes widened, and tears slowly soaked Uncle Ma’s overalls.

“You must be exhausted after all this time.” Uncle Ma’s voice softened. “It’s okay, it’s okay… My girl doesn’t have to be afraid of anything…”

At the moment she heard the term “my girl”, a hint of despair flashed in the queen’s eyes. But she pressed it down and slowly closed her eyes.

“Please, don’t take me back.” She stuffed a bud of bewilderment grass into her mouth, murmuring towards Teest. “I will maintain the magic to the end. I will protect everyone… I’ve sworn… Let me be alone at the end…”

Teest stood up and looked down at the thin body at his feet. In this state, the queen indeed wouldn’t live past two months. If she was forcibly taken back to her tribe by other succubi, whether she could last two weeks was even more uncertain.

The queen stretched her twig-like arm, reaching imploringly towards Teest’s barefoot. The moment her fingers touched his skin, she abruptly opened her eyes wide, her face completely distorted by fear.

“You’re not a succubus!”

She withdrew her hand as if she had touched a hot iron, hissing. “You-you clearly don’t have succubus blood, yet you have the power of a succubus… You’re an Eternalist! You’re a Supplement Demon!”

The queen raised her head, trembling all over, her voice unusually sharp.

“This power… How many of my kind have you eaten? Monster! You disgusting monster…”

“How rude.” Teest withdrew his bare foot. He bent down, his fingertip touching the queen’s forehead.

In the blink of an eye, the queen was dragged into a dreamland, completely falling into a deep sleep. She slumped to the ground with only faint breaths remaining from her chest.

Uncle Ma hadn’t been in this other world for long. His knowledge only extended to things like “the Demon King’s minions” that he had encountered. He subconsciously hugged the queen, staring at Teest, puzzled and vigilant.

“Alright, I originally came here to do this. You both just stay here peacefully.”

Teest patted the dust off his clothes and said in a relaxed tone, “I put her into a deep dream. People in this state can’t be awakened carelessly. I advise you not to move her—well, if you don’t care about her life or death, you can try.”

“What if the Demon King’s minions find us?” Uncle Ma shouted.

Teest seriously thought for a few seconds. “Consider yourself unlucky.”

“You—”

“Don’t worry. You won’t have to wait too long.” Teest smiled brilliantly. “Nol has said he will give a solution within two days. He always keeps his word. Promise me, can you be not so unlucky?”

Uncle Ma gritted his teeth.

Teest stretched a bit and turned to leave.

“Wait.”

As Teest was about to leave the cave, Ma Zhigang tried to stop him. “You seem to be not surprised at all by her condition. Can you understand why she… doesn’t want to live?”

Teest continued walking as if he hadn’t heard.

“Please, tell me.” Uncle Ma’s voice became a bit hoarse. “I can’t understand my daughter, and I can’t understand her either. She’s a queen. Her life is much better than others’.”

“Just a lack of some care, how did it become like this? I can’t understand. She said other succubi don’t understand either…”

“Swear to cooperate with us.” Teest finally stopped without turning back.

Ma Zhigang looked at the sleeping succubus queen and gave a wry smile. “I swear.”

“Most people live to pursue an answer,” Teest said. “What will happen tomorrow, who will meet, whether important people are doing well… or confused about something or want to find out the truth.”

“You seem very persistent in figuring out why she doesn’t want to live. Isn’t this the answer you’re pursuing, no?” There was a hint of amusement in Teest’s voice. “Then imagine yourself after knowing the answer.”

Knowing why his daughter ended her life? What about afterward?

His daughter was really gone. He certainly couldn’t get custody of his grandchildren, his future life was destined to be alone, and he couldn’t figure out what he wanted to do… He never thought about the future, and he didn’t expect anything in the future.

Ma Zhigang stood still.

Teest continued timely, “Your daughter and the queen? I guess they either got the answers or didn’t have the strength to ask anymore.”

“You understand these things very well.” After a long time, Uncle Ma said hoarsely.

His voice involuntarily softened. This young man could understand these things. He must have suffered a lot and felt empathetic. Perhaps his judgment of this person was somewhat rash. He—

“Of course I understand. To completely destroy a person, you have to know where a person’s will to live is,” Teest said casually. “I have been taught this many times.”

Having said that, with a flash of his silver hair, he disappeared from Ma Zhigang’s sight like a ghost.

……

Teest adjusted his expression for a moment before opening the door to the bedroom.

The time was almost right, so what surprise had his Mr. Lich prepared for him?

The moment he opened the door, a large wolf snout thrust out. Its cold nose forcefully rubbed against Teest’s face, leaving his face covered in snout moisture.

Teest: “…………….”

Teest: “Honey, didn’t you say this thing couldn’t come in?”

Behind the night-like black fur, Nol squeezed out. “My… cough, the magic just succeeded, but to bring in something bigger, we need your succubus trait to help…”

He was panting, also squeezed by the shadow wolf. That lava-like anger had vanished without a trace.

It seemed that Nol used a method similar to [Travel Through Dreams] to pull the shadow wolf in. Shadow Wolf Ben, indeed, could serve as a helping force. But to deal with so many Thousand-Hands Nightmares, the shadow wolf wasn’t enough—even if it had mysteriously grown a lot bigger, it couldn’t withstand the trampling of thousands of monsters.

“You need to summon something bigger.” Teest wiped his face carefully and confirmed again.

“Yes, come with me quickly. The best time is approaching!” Nol grabbed Teest’s wrist and ran with him towards the forest.

Teest, confused, pushed aside branches and followed Nol for a while. Around the two, a light purple fog rolled maliciously, and Teest faintly heard the sound of coins falling to the ground.

What’s happening? Has Nol finally gone mad?

Nol stopped in a clearing, his face slightly excited.

He took out the letter opener and pierced his palm directly. The blood floated up, quickly forming one complicated magic circle after another. They extended from the ground towards the sky, forming a giant circle with a radius of six meters.

“Come.” Nol grabbed Teest’s hand, and the blood flowed down Teest’s fingers. “Let’s activate it together. I have calculated it. There’s absolutely no problem.”

Not knowing what could be summoned, Teest raised his eyebrows and extended his hand obediently. …Anyway, he had even seen the Dragon King Subelbot. Maybe Nol planned to summon a giant dragon!

Both of their palms pressed on the magic circle at the same time.

The blood circle lit up quickly, and numerous magic nodes shone brightly. The force of this magic was very gentle, unlike an attack circle or a summoning circle, Teest thought. It truly was an upgraded version of [Travel Through Dreams], a “door to the dream world”.

The surrounding space twisted and deformed. Something was trying hard to squeeze in. Finally, accompanied by a terrifying sound of space tearing, the true form of the thing revealed—

It was a tower.

A huge black tower with black tentacles growing at its base, like a giant cone snail hermit crab.

The tentacles at the base of the tower seemed to have no perception and were forcibly squeezed into the “door” that Nol opened. The tower was square and straight, with a gravestone-like heaviness, as if a pillar supporting the sky was falling.

“Nol, you didn’t…” Teest held his breath and murmured quietly.

“At this time, the stronghold the ‘Lost Tower’ just passed specific coordinates.”

Below the black tower, Nol turned around smilingly and opened his arms to Teest. “You said, if the power disparity is big enough, those monsters can stomp the succubi to death just by stepping on them.”

“It applies the other way around too, doesn’t it…?”

Chapter 58: Lost Memories

Nol stood up too fiercely, almost bumping into Teest, who was hugging him. Fortunately, Teest was agile enough. He dodged gracefully while his hand still rested on Nol’s shoulder.

The same kind of confusion appeared in the eyes of the two Players. They couldn’t understand why Nol was so agitated.

It was just a cursed item. Weren’t they common?

Succubus Doni showed a hint of surprise. He paused, and his voice became slightly softened. “Yes, many people share your view. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was personally created by Lady Hyacinth and has been kept by the rulers… The Great Queen wouldn’t curse her subjects.”

“The Red Magic Diamond used to make it was given by that human. If the human had tampered with it, Queen Hyacinth would have noticed. I personally don’t agree with the notion of a ‘curse’.”

Nol didn’t respond. He was staring intently at Doni’s withered lips, as if trying to pry more words out with his gaze.

“After the death of Queen Hyacinth, just over a hundred and fifty years ago, we said farewell to six rulers. Before Queen Hyacinth, each ruler usually ruled for one hundred to two hundred years. The only difference is that the later rulers all wore the ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’… So suspicion is inevitable.”

Succubus Doni looked slim, and his features still held the shadows of a man in his thirties, but his tone was incredibly old.

“Holy shit, aren’t you clearly letting the Mad… uh, Teest be the fuel?” Solo’s eyes were still red, and he carefully avoided looking at Teest.

This was a clumsy attempt to please, Nol judged. Like a trapped and helpless little animal, it could only tentatively lick the hand of the hunter, begging for some mercy.

The Players were his kind, and he should have felt displeased or sad for this, but Nol’s thoughts were filled with “the curse of the A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. His heart was pounding with sharp pain, barely suppressing a surge of anger.

So Nol didn’t intend to intervene in this conversation. He looked at Succubus Doni, signaling him to make it quick.

“I don’t know what you are implying. This gentleman has explicitly expressed his willingness to dedicate himself to our tribe. We even signed an additional agreement.”

Doni’s voice quickly became cold. “Not only is Lord Teest participating in the ‘Heir Selection’, everyone has sworn to give their all—the ruler’s protection must never be interrupted. It relates to the survival of the race.”

You talk a good game*, so why don’t you do it yourself?” Solo muttered.

*What you say is better than what you sing (说的比唱的还好听) Idiom referring to although one’s words are beautiful, they are deceptive and empty.

The corner of Doni’s mouth twitched, and he sighed. “I’m already two hundred and sixty-five years old.”

Equivalent to about seventy in human years, Nol quickly calculated. The appearance of succubi ages slowly, and Doni’s appearance indeed matched.

But that wasn’t the point.

“So you have seen Queen Hyacinth.” Nol’s hands pressed on the edge of the table. His fingers slowly closed as he looked at Succubus Doni with a mixture of sorrow and longing.

Solo was completely choked by that gaze and couldn’t continue the conversation.

Back on Earth, he had seen such eyes—during elementary school, Solo had a particularly good friend who died young due to illness. Every time that child’s father looked at him, the gaze was the same as “Ross’” now.

They treat the person before them as a puzzle, futilely piecing together the shadow of the departed.

“Bring out your memories.” Teest suddenly spoke.

“No.” Doni refused sternly.

By now, from the attitudes of those two humans, this “Succubus Teest of the Shiva Tribe” didn’t seem as gentle as he appeared. But that was okay. An agreement was an agreement. Either he had to abide by it or pay the price.

“If you want to save this tribe—though I think you guys don’t have the slightest worth to be saved—hand over the memories about Queen Hyacinth. I know you can,” Teest said lightly.

“If you have questions, I am willing to answer. Memories are absolutely private, and my memories are unrelated to this matter.” Doni frowned. “Why must you peep into memories?”

“Because that will make me very happy.” Teest tapped his chin. “I will try my best to be your heir when I’m happy. If I’m unhappy, I can only break the promise—by the way, my husband is proficient in pain-relieving magic. I will just lose my legs and eyes for a while.”

“Also, my blood will stain your floor. Bloodstains are hard to clean. You should be prepared.” Teest’s tone became serious, as if this was the most frightening threat.

“What are you talking about? This isn’t a game!” Doni said in shock. “Are you going to put so many lives at the whim of your mood?”

“Aren’t you doing the same?” Teest smiled.

Lunatic. Succubus Doni stood there in shock.

This was the first time he had seen someone spout such blatant nonsense with such righteousness, and somehow making a bit of perverse sense.

He instinctively looked at Nol. The handsome black-haired youth noticed Doni’s gaze in an instant. Nol stared at him with a frightening determination burning in his eyes.

Doni slowly sat back on the stool. His face was numb for a few seconds, revealing a smile that didn’t quite seem like a smile. He tiredly raised his fingers, not even avoiding the humans he despised.

“Alright… I beg you. Save this tribe.” He sighed lightly and closed his eyes.

They were on the Dream Edge. Doni snapped his fingers, and his memories turned into scenes, appearing directly beside everyone.

Everyone saw a young girl.

The girl had satin-like golden hair, and her blue-purple eyes were like the sky at the Dream Edge. She wore no makeup, nor did she need it—like a delicate and pretty water lily, any extra adornment would be superfluous.

Succubus Queen Hyacinth.

Hyacinth wore a popular hemp dress from a human village. Her long hair was loosely tied behind her head, with a few fresh wildflowers pinned to her bun. Her gaze wasn’t as naive as that of human girls, more like a blade wrapped in sheer silk.

Only when looking at her lover would that sharp blade completely sink into the silk, leaving only softness behind.

Decoste, a similarly beautiful human youth. They walked hand in hand, talking and laughing through the Dream Edge. Everyone watched them through Doni’s eyes… They looked blissfully happy.

Nol almost reached out to them.

The young succubus Doni couldn’t get too close to the Queen. His memories of her were just fragments. A new scene bubbled up, shattering the previous illusion.

Decoste transformed from a handsome boy into a robust and handsome young man, then from a handsome young man into a mature and elegant middle-aged man. He was much taller than Hyacinth and no longer held Hyacinth’s hand. They were arm in arm instead.

Queen Hyacinth still looked like a seventeen- or eighteen-year-old girl. The unrestrained smiles on their faces were gone, replaced by worries.

…The inherent lifespan difference between the two races had already bared its fangs.

According to the arrangement of the production team, it was time for the Players to act—Players got lost in the Dream Edge, helping Hyacinth find the bewilderment grass.

Later, this pair of lovers would take the bewilderment grass, connecting their deepest desired dreams. After confirming each other’s intentions, they decided to cherish the remaining time. The Player who successfully found the bewilderment grass would receive the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” from Hyacinth.

A sweet story tinged with a hint of sadness.

Unexpectedly to Nol, even if the Players didn’t appear, Hyacinth still issued the task of finding fresh bewilderment grass. The first to complete the task was Succubus Doni.

In his memory, this was the closest he ever got to Queen Hyacinth.

A faint worry shrouded Hyacinth’s face, but her eyes were filled with more determination. She took the fresh bewilderment grass from Succubus Doni with both hands, giving him a warm smile.

“Thank you, Adonis.” She patted his head.

The bewilderment grass was green all over, topped with dense blue-purple flowers, somewhat resembling forget-me-nots. However, its flowers were shaped like tiny hearts, appearing more sparse.

“What are you going to do with it?” Young Doni asked. “Bewilderment grass cannot be taken directly. If you need bewilderment dew…”

Hyacinth shook her head with a smile. She gently held the bouquet, beautiful like a dream itself.

“These flowers are enough, young man,” she said. “I just need to see two hearts clearly.”

That day, Decoste wasn’t by her side, and from then on, he never was again.

Why? Nol couldn’t understand.

The Players only found the bewilderment grass for the couple. Considering the varying EQ of the Players, they didn’t arrange any mandatory lines for them. The couple resolved their emotional entanglements completely on their own.

Since Hyacinth made the right choice at the right time, why… Why did they still face such an outcome?

The memories of Succubus Doni continued.

Hyacinth changed.

She was once a queen who highly valued freedom, encouraging everyone to adventure and enjoy life. Three hundred and sixty-five days a year, Hyacinth would be away from the throne for three hundred and sixty days.

But with Decoste’s disappearance, Queen Hyacinth became a true queen, accompanying that exquisite throne day and night.

She issued several directives in succession.

Uncharacteristically, she strictly forbade tribe members from interacting with humans and prohibited everyone from leaving the protection of the Dream Edge at will. At the same time, she hid the succubus lair within a dream and established the rule that “the ruler must inherit the A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

For the disorganized succubi, this series of changes was too sudden. Everyone was extremely puzzled, and quite a few people had directly jumped out in opposition. Succubus Doni was one of them—he had just made good human friends in an outside adventure team, and they had agreed to travel together.

“You have dealings with Mr. Decoste yourself. Why do you require this of us?” In the royal court, he asked in dissatisfaction.

“Decoste won’t come here anymore,” Queen Hyacinth calmly said. “If you have heard, the Eternal Church has been targeting the succubi recently, and several groups have completely lost contact.”

“Next, our territory will enter a semi-closed state. Everyone, please form teams and take turns going out to hunt. Remember not to always take the same path.”

The succubi discussed amongst themselves. They were all young and beautiful, complementing this beautiful lair.

“So suddenly?” another succubus voiced. “Our territory is on the Dream Edge, not as exposed as theirs, and everything has been normal recently…”

“By the time we realize it’s not normal, it will be too late,” Hyacinth said. “There will be no discussion on this matter.”

“We need to know what exactly happened, Your Majesty.” Doni tried to raise his voice while maintaining politeness. “Like what we are facing, and why the next ruler has to use ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’? We need a more detailed explanation. Otherwise, it’s hard to explain to others outside.”

“I also don’t know what we will face.” Hyacinth sat on the exquisite throne, her majestic tone completely mismatching her young appearance. “But I know, it will be fatally dangerous. Maybe in the future resistance, everyone will have the chance to understand.”

The succubi looked at each other, then all looked at the queen on the throne. The confusion on their faces didn’t decrease but increased.

“As for the reason for having to use ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’? I left it on that jewelry set. The moment you wear it, you will know the reason… Dear Adonis, if you are really so curious, please strive to become the crown prince.”

Queen Hyacinth raised her leg, somewhat playfully supporting her cheek. “However, I have something to say in advance. The throne is very uncomfortable to sit on. You all have to think carefully.”

“Alright, starting tomorrow, I will wear ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. It will become the new crown of the Black Forest Tribe.”

Nol stood in the center of the royal court, looking at Hyacinth on the throne through more than a hundred years of time.

The loving couple had already separated, but Hyacinth acted as usual. It wasn’t a pretense of strength. She sat there proudly, her eyes firm, her smile bright.

Why would such a person choose to end herself after so many years…

God knows how much Nol wanted to talk to his creation. He had too many questions for her.

What exactly have you experienced? What kind of pain have you endured? What were you thinking at the moment you left the world?

…Did you, despise this world very much?

The smiling queen was only a dozen steps away from him, but they were already separated by life and death.

He no longer had the chance to ask.

……

“As you all have seen, the Great Queen Hyacinth has protected us.”

After scouring through his memories, Doni spoke with some resentment. “If it weren’t for Lady Hyacinth overcoming all objections and insisting on early defense, the Black Forest Tribe would have been annihilated when those Nightmares attacked suddenly.”

“How can ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ be cursed? Those who wear it are all prepared to die for the tribe. We have also tested it in countless ways… It’s a treasure left by Lady Hyacinth—a proof of sacrifice…”

The room was very quiet.

“Let me see,” Nol said. “Only by wearing ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ can the truth be known, so we must win the heir selection. The victory condition is ‘bring back the mad queen’… I have only one question.”

Doni took a deep breath. “Go ahead.”

“As long as the queen returns to the tribe, it counts as ‘bringing back’, right?”

“…Yes,” Succubus Doni answered perplexedly. Isn’t this the basic definition?

“Then, if I bring you to the queen, it also counts as ‘bringing back’,” Nol said. “Good, let’s do this. Next—”

He walked towards Anakin and Solo, who were sitting dumbfounded. “It’s time to sign the agreement, friends.”

“Whatever you want to know, I won’t spill!” Solo shivered. “Ju-just kill me!”

“It’s just to supplement the original agreement.” Nol stretched out his hand indifferently, and blue fire sketched out two pieces of text in the air.

The flames burned slightly in midair. The writing was very clear. Anakin glanced at her cousin. The content of the two agreements was identical.

The agreement was concise and clear.

The four must cooperate fully to strive to save the succubus tribe. During the mission, they couldn’t harm each other.

If they could obtain the “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, these two perverted gays would give them the crown and necklace—exactly as they initially agreed.

In exchange, the two Players needed to keep two secrets. They couldn’t disclose any information related to the Mad Monk to anyone, nor could they disclose the content of this agreement to anyone.

“That’s it?” Solo lifted his head in surprise.

What kind of dream clause is this? It’s almost like giving “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” away for free. And the requirement was just to save the succubus tribe. This sounded too righteous… Had the Mad Monk been baptized by love and decided to turn back?

Anakin remained silent for a long time. Her eyes were fixed on the brief penalty for breach at the end of the agreement, and her heart was in turmoil.

Penalty for breach of contract: Revocation of “Player Permissions” of the two Players.

…Are you kidding me?

…This is way more horrifying than the Mad Monk! How could an NPC possibly deprive Players of their rights? No, why does this guy know about “Player Permissions”?!

She stiffly lifted her head to look at Nol behind the blue fire text. The latter pursed his lips at her, smiling somewhat apologetically.

“I didn’t want to bind you all so strictly,” he said, “but Teest’s identity is really special. Please understand.”

“This agreement…”

“Don’t worry. As long as the magic of the covenant passes, it means the content of the covenant is true and effective.” Nol returned to Teest’s side, looking as usual.

“Sister, there’s no restriction on that female knight above.” Solo, oblivious to the anomaly, was still whispering to Anakin. “At least, we don’t have to keep this secret.”

No, it’s not that simple. Anakin was still staring at Nol.

The point when the two NPCs turned hostile was precisely when “they found out something was off with the female knight Malvina”. She didn’t think they were unaware or indifferent to Malvina’s anomaly.

If these two didn’t specify it in the covenant, there was only one possibility—

After this matter was over, those two NPCs firmly believed that they would voluntarily keep the secret.

She couldn’t imagine at all how they planned to achieve this.

“So, what do you1 plan to do?” Anakin couldn’t help changing her form of address1. “You just asked about the definition of ‘bringing back the queen’… You have an idea, right?”

1Clarity: She started addressing them as [nin] (), which is a formal polite way to say “you”. It’s often used as a form of respect to elders, superiors, customers, or strangers.

“Yes, this matter requires your assistance,” Nol said.

“…If this matter is resolved smoothly, we might even become friends.”

Alright, the lunatic couple is about to create a person!!!

Kinky Thoughts:

In terms of meaning, Forget-me-nots represent remembrance but also have other meanings, including true love, devotion, and royalty.

Hyacinths symbolize peace, commitment, and beauty, but also power and pride. It is also a symbol of jealousy from the Greek mythology Hyacinth.

Hyacinthus was a Spartan prince of remarkable beauty and a lover of the sun god Apollo. He was also admired by Zephyrus, the god of the West wind, Boreas, the god of the North wind and a mortal man named Thamyris. Hyacinthus chose Apollo over the others. He visited all of Apollo’s sacred lands with the god in a chariot drawn by swans. So fiercely was Apollo in love with Hyacinthus that he abandoned his sanctuary in Delphi to enjoy Hyacinthus’ company by the river Eurotas. He taught Hyacinthus the use of the bow and the lyre, the art of prophecy, and exercises in the gymnasium.

One day, Apollo was teaching him the game of quoits. They decided to have a friendly competition by taking turns to throw the discus. Apollo threw first, with a strength so great that the discus split the clouds in the sky. Eager to retrieve the discus, Hyacinthus ran behind it to catch it. But as it hit the ground, the discus bounced back, hitting Hyacinthus’ head and wounding him fatally. An alternative version of the myth holds Zephyrus responsible for the death of Hyacinthus. Jealous that Hyacinthus preferred the radiant Apollo, Zephyrus blew Apollo’s quoit boisterously off course to kill Hyacinthus.

Chapter 57: The Wicked Curse

“Kill them all? What nonsense. Who doesn’t know how to boast?” Uncle Ma sneered.

Teest didn’t respond. He was scrutinizing Nol’s features—there was no sign of collapse, despair, or any other unusual expressions on Nol’s face. Nol was just smiling, his face full of satisfaction, as if he had found the “solution”.

Even though they all knew what that solution implied in terms of slaughter and bloodshed.

…It was truly great.

Teest was staring intently at Nol. Every time he thought he had seen through Nol, this man always managed to give him a new surprise.

“What are you going to do?” Teest’s voice became somewhat hoarse with excitement.

“I haven’t figured out the details. It’s my first time considering annihilating the enemy.” Nol scratched his head embarrassedly. “But the direction is confirmed. The next steps are simple… I will find a way within two days.”

“Mm, but I need to capture a monster to study. Uncle Ma, do you know how to exit the ‘dream within a dream’ of the Nightmare?”

His tone was as if he was saying, “The lightbulb at home is broken, so I’ll buy a new one in two days.”

Ma Zhigang inhaled sharply. “What are you thinking—”

“Don’t worry. I’ve said we won’t force you to leave or force you to take us to the queen.” Nol smiled. “Once we organize the plan, I’ll discuss it with you again.”

Uncle Ma sneered coldly. “Then you have to be able to catch me.”

“The magic that guards here is an evolved version of ‘Dream Manipulation’, ‘Dream Dominion’. Only the ruler of the succubus tribe can use it.” Nol explained calmly, “‘Dream Dominion’ hides the succubus territory on the Dream Edge, like an invisible shield.”

“If I’m right, those monsters are surrounding this shield from all sides, just waiting for it to break. The succubi that left the shelter of the shield to feed would directly fall into the pile of monsters.”

Nol probably understood the truth behind the disappearance of the succubi.

The stronger the ruler of the race, the larger the shield. In the early years, when the border of the succubus territory was wide and there weren’t many Nightmares, some lucky succubi could successfully return home after feeding.

However, as time passed, maybe the number of those terrifying monsters surged, maybe the ruler of the succubi weakened generation by generation—or maybe both—the shield shrank, and monsters densely surrounded it, and the leaving succubi naturally died.

A simple but brutal reality.

“We could encounter monsters so close to the succubi lair. The current queen’s condition must be very poor, and the shield has shrunk further,” Nol continued.

Ma Zhigang’s expression darkened. “I know all these damn things, so what? What does this have to do with how you catch me?”a

Nol stopped next to Teest, who was sitting cross-legged, his fingers lightly brushing through some silver hair.

He answered almost gently, “The reduced protection magic is easy to calculate. I can calculate the queen’s position—I mean, real-time location.”

“You know, this is the best threat I have ever heard.” Teest looked up at him happily.

Uncle Ma’s face instantly turned as dark as the bottom of a pot. “You damn fool…”

“If we really wanted to force a meeting with the queen, I wouldn’t tell you all this.”

Nol’s tone didn’t carry a trace of anger. He still had a weird sense of sincerity. “You might as well teach us how to leave. Otherwise, we can only follow you—I honestly don’t want to waste time on this kind of harmful and unbeneficial thing.”

Uncle Ma’s skeletal face twitched for a moment, and he looked at Nol again. The old man’s eyes were no longer careless but had become much more cautious.

“I can ‘Travel Through Dreams’,” Ma Zhigang said irritably. “You know everything. I won’t explain. You guys quickly do whatever you need with the monster, and I’ll get you out, okay? After that, you do whatever you have to. Just don’t bother me.”

“Thank you.” Nol bowed his head to him.

[Travel Through Dreams] was a passive skill that a few succubi were born with.

If the succubi possessed this skill, they could jump directly from one dream to another, entering and exiting freely between dreams and reality without preparing complex tools and magic rituals like their peers.

Most uniquely, they could pull other living and non-living things directly into the dream realm.

In general, [Travel Through Dreams] was very suitable for protecting specific targets and was likely a skill that Malvina inherently possessed.

‘[Travel Through Dreams], huh…’ Nol looked at the ground covered with fallen leaves and fell into contemplation.

……

Anakin decided to wait until the theoretical nightfall. If the “brothers” couple didn’t return for a long time, she and Solo couldn’t keep waiting like this.

Malvina’s room also had a timer hourglass. The time was gradually approaching midnight. The hazy sky outside the window didn’t change at all. Solo went to draw the curtains and turned on the light, creating a bit of a nighttime atmosphere in the room.

He honored his agreement with Anakin and didn’t inform anyone in Hermitage about the information of “peculiar monsters in the succubus territory”.

“According to the rules, I should inform ‘Mentor’ of important information. This is serious misconduct.”

Solo sat a bit dispiritedly by the bed, tearing blank paper piece by piece. “Sister, Hermitage studies these, and they are neutral. Why can’t we speak out? …Those higher-ups definitely have better judgment than us.”

Anakin crossed her arms. Leaning against the wall, her gaze was fixed on some non-existent point in the air. “I don’t want to create conflict.”

“What conflict could there be?”

“You think the subordinates will believe everything the leaders say?” Anakin said lightly. “Besides, the Temple of Life specifically chose the explanation everyone wanted to accept. Didn’t you have any doubts?”

“But their explanation has no issues.”

Solo, rubbing his face in pain, said, “Mr. Eugene’s explanations are all reasonable, and the Temple has been helping everyone. There’s no reason to lie about such things… I also want to ask, sister, how are you so sure that they have issues?”

“Firstly, that Malvina was almost seamlessly replaced. It’s not that easy to enter a succubus lair,” Anakin said.

“That’s too absolute. Didn’t the succubus say her personality changed? And she often goes out alone to find the queen. The possibility of being replaced is obviously the greatest,” Solo countered quietly.

“Secondly, that old man’s shirt was sewn too meticulously,” Anakin mentioned with a bitter smile.

“…Huh?”

“You can tell, the person who sewed it takes life seriously, at least the kind who finds joy in suffering and plans to live meticulously here.” Anakin said, “If it really was a monster created by the Eternal Church, would they have such leisure and elegance?”

“Maybe the Eternal Church thought of this and deliberately misled you—” Solo just wanted to continue when suddenly his mouth snapped shut, unable to make a sound.

Anakin put away her wand and sighed heavily. “See, even we with such a good relationship can argue. That’s why I said I don’t want to create conflict.”

Solo rubbed his mouth. His lips were sealed by a silencing spell, only making unclear mumbles.

Anakin seemed conflicted, looking at her wand and then her toes.

Seeing the troubled look on Anakin, Solo gradually calmed down. Yes, they weren’t ordinary guild members. Bluntly put, everyone here had close relationships, and he guessed Anakin also wanted to inform “Amazon” about this matter.

However, she didn’t reach for her wand.

Only the slight sound of the hourglass could be heard in the room. Finally, the last grain of sand fell leisurely, stopping on top of the pile.

Midnight had arrived, and the hourglass automatically turned over. At this moment, the room door was abruptly knocked.

“Come out, humans,” the voice of the Succubus Doni rang out, more panic than indifference in his tone. “Te… Landus and the others are back!”

The succubi were all crowded in the square in front of the dungeon. Although they looked mummified, the scene was still spectacular when gathered like this. Anakin glanced around. There were thousands of succubi. This was indeed a large tribe.

When the two Players approached, the succubi quickly made way.

‘Interesting,’ Anakin thought. Disdain and respect sometimes had the same effect.

The two Players soon saw the object of attention—

A monster covered in arms around its neck was tightly wrapped in vines, struggling on the ground. It was pawing madly at the ground with the palms on its “head”, emitting an incomprehensible scream.

An ominous aura surrounded it, giving Anakin goosebumps.

“We didn’t find the queen, but we found this thing in the forest.” Teest kicked the horrifying monster lightly. “They attack with dream within a dream. It’s conservatively estimated that there are tens of thousands.”

Nol raised his head, showing his bruised neck to the succubi. To enhance his credibility, he deliberately didn’t heal the marks on his wrists and neck.

The succubi finally showed some emotion, whispering like ripples in the water. Many succubi guessed the sad fate of the missing ones, and the sobbing in the whispers became more and more intense, like ripples caused by raindrops.

But not a single succubus in the field collapsed or went mad, to Nol’s surprise. The atmosphere felt somewhat familiar, and Nol couldn’t help but recall the day he first arrived and buried the tragically deceased college student with his neighbors.

These succubi were very much like his initial neighbors. They had no excess energy left to despair.

“It took us a great deal of effort to capture this one that was left behind.” Nol questioned angrily, “You all never explained that there were such risks in the selection of the heir. My partner and I need an explanation—we’ve seen ordinary monsters, but we’ve never seen this kind before!”

“What exactly happened to Her Majesty? What are these things? We need more detailed explanations!” Teest feigned tearing up, “painfully” putting an arm around Nol’s shoulder. “Yes, I almost doubted everyone’s sincerity…I came to help, but you keep concealing the truth time and time again. This has been a scam from the start, right?”

“If so, I’d rather accept the punishment for breaching the contract… My partner can heal me. I believe the pain from the punishment will never be greater than the betrayal of my compatriots.”

Anakin perked up. Here comes the NPC key event!

“This is the Demon King’s—” But before she could finish, she was pushed aside by Succubus Doni.

Doni rushed to Teest, kneeling halfway. “It’s not like that, sir. It’s not like that! This is also the first time we’ve seen such an ominous creature.”

After saying this, he bit his jerky-like lips, as if making some kind of resolution.

“You brought very, very valuable information. As…as a return, I will thoroughly explain the detailed information about Her Majesty. We… um, please change to a more private place.”

Teest and Nol exchanged glances before calming their anger. “Let’s go.”

‘Never mind,’ Anakin thought. ‘It’s the succubi’s exclusion phase again. It doesn’t matter if I wait for them to finish talking.’

“…Wait.”

As he was passing by Anakin, Nol stopped and said stiffly, “I want to bring our human companions.”

Doni subconsciously wanted to refute, but his gaze lingered on the frightening bruise on Nol’s neck, and then looked at Teest’s face, which contained a hidden warning, and could only bitterly say “fine.”

……

Anakin’s rare good mood dissipated the moment she stepped into the conference room—

The door of the room shut directly behind her, sealing with seven layers of magic. The atmosphere was oppressively terrifying. If it weren’t for the fact that Doni was the only succubus present, Anakin would have suspected that the succubi were planning to silence them.

“Before we start, I want to ask a question.” Everyone sat around the round table while Nol crossed his fingers. “Our companions should have done some investigation…”

“Yes, the two have investigated Knight Malvina’s room, and we didn’t stop them.” Doni’s voice was somewhat tense.

“I see.” Nol turned to the two Players. “Did you find anything?”

Solo subconsciously looked at Anakin, who paused for half a second before smiling and responding. “No, we found nothing—Ah!”

Before she could finish her sentence, countless golden threads shot out from under the table, binding her and Solo tightly to their chairs.

“Excuse me.”

A voice sweet as honey water came from behind her. Teest had left his seat at some point. He bent over and swiftly took Anakin’s magic wand.

“How can the two of you lie to your companions? This isn’t a good habit.”

Anakin was blank for a second.

These two NPCs…

“What do you want to do?” Rogue Solo was already yelling, horrified to find that his [Lockpicking] skill was ineffective against these beautiful golden threads.

His [Lockpicking] had been invincible before. This had never happened!

Wait, golden threads? Golden threads…?! Golden threads—!!!

Solo froze on the spot.

Anakin also came to her senses, shivering all over and nearly shrieking, “Are you the Mad Monk?!”

Teest looked at Nol, somewhat aggrieved. “You see, honey. This is the reaction I wanted.”

Nol pretended not to see.

Anakin slumped in her chair. She knew they must be hiding their identities when she found out these two weren’t brothers. But this…this was too much!

She didn’t know whether to be shocked that the Mad Monk was as handsome as a mainline NPC or that the Mad Monk actually had a husband. Speaking of which, that black-haired young man who called himself “Ross” seemed to be fully aware. Where did this supervillain come from?

Are they going to die?

This was what she thought, somewhat blankly. Coming from the Temple, she naturally knew of the “glorious” deeds of the Mad Monk. Anakin was a person who feared pain very much. She firmly believed that she couldn’t withstand half a minute of bloody torture.

But she didn’t want to die yet…

Anakin’s eyes were sour, and tears were about to fall. Beside her, Solo had already started to snort loudly, twisting like a worm. “Wuwu… Wuwuwu, we should have brought Eugene in… Wu…”

“Oh, so Mr. Eugene is outside. Thank you for informing us. You’re so kind.” Teest patted Solo on the shoulder with a smile, and Solo choked, looking like he was going to pass out.

“Stop messing around, Teest.” Nol sighed heavily. He had the illusion of watching a cat playing with a mouse.

Play with the people of the Eternal Church if you want but spare the normal ones.

“Ah, fine.” Teest stood up straight, went behind Nol, and circled his shoulders. The stolen priestess’ wand was now pressed against Nol’s throat, causing the mark on Nol’s neck to quickly disappear.

“We’re sorry. We don’t intend to harm the two of you. It’s just that the matter is of great importance, so we can only forcibly keep you here.” Nol put one hand on Teest’s forearm, apologizing to Anakin with a smile.

Anakin trembled all over, looking increasingly panicked.

“As for the specific actions, please hear the whole story before deciding.” Nol felt the weight of Teest on his shoulders. “We swear we won’t hurt the two of you. If you are not reassured, we can sign a formal agreement.”

“Tsk.” Teest clicked his tongue.

“I’m serious.” Nol muttered back.

Hearing this, the two Players finally weren’t as panicked.

Maybe they realized, the Mad Monk’s binding was relatively gentle—he really just fixed them firmly to the chairs. The force was just right. There was no bad bruising on their various parts.

“Okay, okay.” Seeing that the other party had no intention to kill temporarily, Anakin barely squeezed out a response.

Succubus Doni had been trapped on the Dream Edge for a long time and obviously didn’t know about the Mad Monk. He blankly watched this “infighting” until four pairs of eyes focused on Doni’s face, and then he came to his senses.

“Ah…” he uttered numbly. “Yes, yes… the situation with Her Majesty…”

Having said that, Doni stood up and took a deep breath.

“Lord Teest, you’re a succubus. You must be able to see. This place has been long guarded by ‘Dream Dominion’, and the next ruler also has to maintain this magic.”

Teest was still leaning on the back of Nol’s chair, loosely embracing Nol. “Mm, continue.”

He knew about this matter early on.

“Even the Great Queen Hyacinth couldn’t support such complex magic uninterruptedly… To be foolproof, the ruler must wear a magical ornament called ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to enhance their own abilities.”

Anakin held her breath, Solo’s sobbing stopped, and even Nol’s gaze was more focused.

“But there has been debate within the tribe about that set of ornaments. In fact, the current queen isn’t the only one who has fallen into madness.”

“The Great Queen Hyacinth committed suicide inexplicably, and her successors either killed themselves or were obsessed with bewilderment grass, eventually weakening and dying… Our lifespan should be around four hundred years, but our rulers rarely live to two hundred years… Even a few died before a hundred.”

Doni twisted his branch-like fingers.

“So some people suspect that there may be a wicked curse on the ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.”

“Impossible!” Nol stood up straight away.

Chapter 56: The Gatekeeper

“Oh, I understand now. You’re also from Joy Garden… But why should I help you two?”

The succubus neighbor sat cross-legged in the bushes, her eyes occasionally glancing in the direction of the gathering monsters, appearing quite nervous.

She wore a standard white old man’s shirt with a loose coat over it and large, coarse shorts, evidently modified from a cloak. This neighbor had long hair that was roughly cut, hanging tousled and frayed at the back of her head. Her tail swished irritably against the ground, making her movements quite crude.

After listening to Nol explain the situation, the neighbor showed no sign of movement. Whether hearing “this is a game-like real world” or “there are many Earth compatriots here”, she displayed a face of indifference as if the end of the world didn’t concern her.

“Don’t you want to go home?”

Nol was somewhat surprised at this person’s attitude, suspecting that even if he said, “The ground under your feet is all made of chocolate crumbs and cheese,” this neighbor’s expression wouldn’t change.

The skeleton-like succubus sneered, “I am Ma Zhigang. You’ve heard of me, living in Joy Garden, right? All you people babble all day. You think I don’t know.”

Nol’s expression suddenly stiffened.

Teest curiously looked at the succubus, then at Nol. [You know her?]

Nol was a bit at a loss for how to explain. He calmed his emotions for a few seconds before accepting the fact that “the young female succubus in front of him is actually the neighborhood gatekeeper”.

Most of Joy Garden’s gatekeepers worked in shifts and were external staff hired by the property management. Only Uncle Ma was both a gatekeeper and a homeowner. He was notorious for his bad temper, maintaining a stern face every day, and wasn’t easy to talk to.

However, no owner had openly complained, mainly because Uncle Ma’s life experience was too… extraordinary.

Ma Zhigang, in his fifties, was born in a northern rural area. He lost his parents in his teenage years and grew up under the care of others. He didn’t do well in school, and right after graduating from junior high, he became an apprentice tailor. It was said he had some underground experiences.

But he was smart, hardworking, and lucky. After years of struggle, he went from being an apprentice to a clothing factory manager, accumulating assets well over eight figures.

His wife passed away due to postpartum complications, leaving behind a daughter. Ma Zhigang never remarried and raised his daughter by himself. She excelled academically and professionally, marrying a well-matched elite.

Uncle Ma, having a house, money, no illness, no disasters, and an accomplished daughter and son-in-law, was once the envy of many middle-aged and elderly people in Joy Garden.

However, last year, Ma Zhigang’s daughter jumped off the roof. She died on the spot, leaving a one-month-old baby.

…Thus, the legend of Uncle Ma came to an end.

No one knew what happened. Everyone heard that Uncle Ma sold his retirement house and the clothing factory. He moved into his daughter’s house and became the gatekeeper of Joy Garden.

Uncle Ma was a decent person—diligent and responsible—but had a temper like a stone in a pit. Out of a feeling nearly akin to pity, the owners tolerated Uncle Ma’s stinky and tough attitude.

However, people still mentioned him from time to time, and even Nol knew about these things, proving his fame.

[I guess he has nothing to miss over there.] Nol summarized after recalling for a moment.

[It seemed he’s a pitiful person,] Teest thought silently.

Whether Ma Zhigang was pitiable, Nol really didn’t dare to confirm. After his daughter’s death, Uncle Ma’s spirit was still as energetic as before. No one knew what he was thinking.

Even now, Nol couldn’t figure out this man’s thoughts. He never interacted with Uncle Ma.

“Enough, don’t bother explaining. I don’t feel like going back, nor do I want to go with you two. You either kill me or let me go,” Malvina… No, Uncle Ma said, grinding his teeth, his hand gripping his modified crowbar.

Nol saw the black bloodstains of the “Thousand-Hand Nightmare” above.

“This succubus tribe will be annihilated. Do you know that?” Nol cautiously said.

Uncle Ma grunted. “I can’t do anything about the rain or my mother getting married. What can I do? I am already in this mess!”

“You will also die,” Teest, the onlooker, helpfully added.

“Then let it be!” Uncle Ma agreed readily.

Nol, Teest: “……” Well, this was their first encounter with a neighbor with such a unique attitude.

“But you’re still resisting.” Teest pointed to his crowbar.

Uncle Ma: “What are you talking about? I don’t care about dying or living. But one has to choose the way to die, right? Are you going to eat shit if I give it to you?”

Teest’s smile twitched, and Nol proactively touched his forearm, preparing for any possibility.

“You also saved us,” Nol said.

“Then I regret it. If I had known you two would talk so much nonsense, I would have let that thing chat with you two.” Uncle Ma’s neck stiffened, and his face was full of disdain.

“We plan to look around for other neighbors, and we are trying to save this succubus tribe now,” Nol continued patiently. “I won’t force you to assist us. Of course, if you are willing—”

“Unwilling. Just leave,” Uncle Ma replied instantly.

Nol: “……”

He rubbed his temples and cleared his throat. “Alright, at least allow me to ask you one question. How did you become the ‘Succubus Malvina’? This information can help others. Please be sure to tell me.”

Uncle Ma might be grumpy, but he wasn’t a sinister person. He could at least meet this minimum requirement.

Nol was truly curious about the size difference between Uncle Ma and the other succubi—he didn’t look like the type keen on survival, and the possibility of him stealing food was indeed slim.

Uncle Ma was silent for a while. “Alright, alright. That day I was sleeping at home, and suddenly I felt a chill on my back and woke up. When I woke up, it wasn’t my room, and lo and behold, I thought I had become a mummy somewhere.”

“Just like that?”

“Exactly. Those long-tailed foreigners are all baffling. I didn’t bother with them and just tried to leave here—then I started encountering those things with hands all over their heads, just like that.”

Nol paused for a while and asked a few more questions. His attitude was always good. Uncle Ma didn’t flare up again and answered straightforwardly.

Ma Zhigang didn’t inherit Malvina’s memories or abilities. He seemed to have woken up in the body of Malvina, who was dying—or had just died. When Uncle Ma woke up, this body naturally gained a lot more vitality, like a richly endowed seed. Since he woke up, this vitality had been consuming, never being replenished.

Nol fell into thought.

Currently, it seemed that the Players were using their original bodies, getting their appearance from the system.

The neighbors were more like possessing monsters that were about to die, taking over control of the monster’s body. To ensure they could wake up normally, they received a gift package of vitality when possessing.

This could explain a lot.

Like in the Dragon’s Lair. The dragons were famously low in birth rate. It was almost impossible for twin black dragon cubs from the same egg to exist. But those two dragon cubs both survived and became his neighbors.

Like Night of the Hunt. In such a harsh environment, the Luo Zhu couple, who knew nothing about the environment, successfully made it through the initial period of confusion, and this wasn’t something that could be achieved solely by experience.

The bodies used by the neighbors were most likely in a state of near-death beforehand.

…It was like some existence deliberately designed this to ensure the neighbors survive.

“Thank you. I have gained very useful information.” Nol bowed his head to Uncle Ma.

Uncle Ma waved his hand impatiently. “Go, go.”

“Um…I have been thinking. It still doesn’t seem quite right.”

Teest sat cross-legged opposite to Uncle Ma, casually playing with the small hunting knife in his right hand. “Sir, you know so much about the ‘Demon King’s minions’… You must have communicated with the Queen, right?”

Ma Zhigang’s breath stopped for a moment, and Teest’s mouth curled up satisfyingly.

“Malvina and the current queen have known each other since childhood. You can’t deceive her. She knows you are an impostor and is still willing to tell you this. This means you two have a good relationship.”

Teest’s action of playing with the knife slowed down. “You know where she is, right? Are you rushing us away because you are afraid that we will kill her?”

“Teest.” Nol couldn’t help but speak up.

“Shh, Mr. Lich. You are just too soft-hearted.”

Teest stared into Uncle Ma’s eyes. “Those succubi don’t know what happened here. The ‘Demon King’s minions’ could only have been told by the queen.”

“He’s thinking, if we know the existence of the queen, maybe we would kill her—we could easily escape from here as long as we kill the queen sheltering this place.”

Indeed.

Nol had thought of this too—

Kill the succubus queen, and this dream would return to reality. The succubus lair would be fully exposed. By then, he could summon the undead to protect himself, and they could leave the Black Forest with all their strength. If they do this, the quest of “Life or Death” could achieve ordinary conditions, and they wouldn’t have to endure the severe penalty of failure.

However, as a price, those succubi would lose their way to survive.

On the Dream Edge, they would only be surrounded by Thousand-Hand Nightmares.

Outside, even the cats and dogs of the Eternal Church could come up together. They two alone couldn’t protect so many succubi.

Speaking of which, once the tribe of the Black Forest was defeated, the contract of the heir selection would surely be voided, and Teest wouldn’t suffer from this.

…Although “aiding in genocide” was evil, it was theoretically a solution.

Uncle Ma stared at Teest tightly. The crowbar in his hand moved a bit.

“All you do is talk all day.” He said angrily, “Bastards, you two will never find her!”

Before the words fell, that crowbar directly hit Teest’s head. Teest blocked it casually with the hunting knife, and Uncle Ma’s force was immediately diverted, awkwardly hitting the fallen leaves.

“So what is your choice, honey?” Teest said with a smile, grabbing Uncle Ma’s wrist backhandedly. “Life or death may not necessarily refer to you and me.”

……

“I am with Solo at the ‘Dream Edge’, and there are no other Players around.” Anakin’s wand was hovering in midair. The milky light intertwined, forming a perfect circle.

Inside the circle was another picture, in the center of which was the face of Knight Eugene. “Do the two of you need assistance? If possible, please also tell us how to enter Dream Edge.”

Just as Rogue Solo was about to reply, Anakin quietly stepped on his foot.

“Let me talk.” She spoke in a steady tone, mixed with the right amount of fatigue. “We took a quest here to assist two target individuals. The quest difficulty is okay.”

“If you enter now, it might affect our quest. If help is needed, we will contact you first.”

Anakin didn’t mention the need to help the succubi.

“Understood, Lady Saint. We will station at the edge of the Black Forest, and the Fifth Brigade is at your disposal at any time.” Eugene bowed his head obediently, his green eyes smiling.

Anakin nodded. “There’s one more thing. Did you mention before that monsters who are proficient in all languages have appeared recently?”

“Indeed, have you encountered one too?”

“No. I just met a succubus who speaks the common language and thought of this.”

“Succubi are very sociable creatures. Probably one-third of them have learned the common language, so you don’t need to be nervous,” Eugene said gently.

“However, if you do encounter a creature behaving strangely and knowing a lot of languages, please stay away and leave it to us.”

The circle of milky light stretched between the two, seemingly adding a halo to the handsome knight. Eugene’s expression was warm, and his eyes were clear and sincere, without any trace of malice.

Being stared at by such a person could easily make one feel “loved”.

Although there was no fluctuation in spiritual magic, Anakin firmly believed that this wasn’t far off from spiritual magic. If she really was a native of Tahe, she might have been unconsciously persuaded by this man.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t.

Through the magic screen, Anakin looked straight into the eyes of this Knight Commander. “Why can’t we deal with monsters?”

“The Eternal Church excels at desecrating the dead. You know their methods.” Eugene’s words flowed like warm water. “We have verified that they have been extracting memories and knowledge from ‘Player’ corpses lately, bestowing them to monsters to shake your spirits.”

Rogue Solo subtly relaxed, letting out a silent sigh. Anakin remained expressionlessly silent.

“Please forgive my late explanation, Lady Saint. After all, at first, there were only one or two cases, and we thought it unnecessary to inform you.” Apparently, Eugene read some emotion from that expressionless face.

“Unfortunately, they have had more and more success recently… After you complete your quest, we will inform all the Saints.”

“So that’s how it is,” Solo said.

“What if the environment has restrictions and it’s inconvenient to hand over to you?” Anakin asked calmly.

“Then I suggest you kill on the spot. Otherwise, it is easy to be deceived.” Eugene smiled.

“Okay, thank you for informing,” Anakin said slowly. “You’ve worked hard, Mr. Eugene.”

She terminated the contact magic.

Different from Solo, who looked relaxed, her expression gradually became gloomy.

“We must find that female knight,” she said. “Sun Luo, don’t talk to anyone about Malvina first. Also, don’t mention it to Hermitage.”

“…Ah? Why?” Hearing his cousin call out his real name, Solo stopped texting.

Anakin grabbed her hair fiercely. “Just don’t say anything for now. It won’t kill anyone to speak after things are clear.”

“Okay, okay.” Solo canceled the messaging spell.

……

“What fucking bullshit. His whole family is made of corpses!” Officer Luo couldn’t help but curse in anger.

After Eugene smashed Witch Lynn’s surveillance puppet, Lynn swiftly switched to a more concealed one—just in case, she had placed multiple dolls of different attributes at every key monitoring point.

Thus, the conversation between Eugene and Anakin was overheard by the neighbors.

“They, they are just like that!” The Banshee cried out in pain. “Those people from the Temple of Life have always wanted to kill all monsters… especially us. Nothing we say matters! They don’t want to communicate at all!”

“This means those ‘Players’ don’t know about us. The Temple is deliberately deceiving them.”

Lynn frowned. “The natives and the Temple are hostile, so it may not be safe to contact Players in the future… Our situation is getting worse.”

Even if Xu Yue managed to protect a few of them and did her best to search for their neighbors, their efforts were like a drop in the bucket.

Joy Garden Community had a total of ten buildings. Each building had ten floors and three units that could hold two households in each unit. That worked out to a total of six hundred households.

However, Joy Garden Community was a high-end residential area. There was basically no situation where several generations squeezed into one house, and there were also many vacant or rented units. In Lynn’s impression, the resident population of the community was probably around 1,400 to 1,500.

The idea of finding more than a thousand people in such a vast world was despairing.

She could only rely on Xu Yue’s identity as a producer, Lynn thought sadly. Although that guy wasn’t sophisticated in dealing with people, he was very smart and kind, and he should be able to come up with some special solutions.

At the same time, the Dream Edge.

“Regarding ‘Life or Death’, I do have a solution,” Nol said. “You reminded me—such a simple solution. Why didn’t I think of it?”

Teest, curious, leaned closer, his hand still clamped like pincers around Uncle Ma. “Oh, what’s the solution?”

“To successfully escape, we need to find a way to break through those monsters. To save the succubus tribe, we also need to lead them all out of the monsters’ encirclement… Hmm, it does sound quite difficult to accomplish.” Nol’s tone was solemn.

“Indeed,” Teest responded cheerfully. “And then? And then?”

What peculiar method would his beloved husband think of this time?

Would he be able to entirely transfer the dream world, or would he use Kando to manipulate space? Or was he going to invent some kind of deceiving concealment magic, hiding everything from the outside world?

He was somewhat excited. His fingers unconsciously tightened, causing Uncle Ma to let out a “fuck”.

Nol continued to narrate seriously, “Then I thought, the solution is actually quite simple. If we want to perfectly avoid the attacks of those monsters…”

He paused slightly and showed Teest a bright smile.

“…We just need to kill them all.”

The author has something to say:

This time I really fell in love with the gatekeeper old man (not really)

Teest: Steadily and maturely going crazy.

Nol: Intermittently raging crazily.

…Who would look at this and not say they are a match made in heaven.

Chapter 55: Two Sides of the Gold Coin

That was undoubtedly an old man’s shirt—a white tank top style. This item had a high appearance rate in Country C during the summer and was deeply loved by elderly men of all ages.

Its stitches were neat, and the sewing style was completely different from other succubus clothes. It stood out amongst a pile of armor, as abrupt as a hand grenade appearing in a costume drama.

[Homemade Underwear: Hand-sewn intimate clothing.

※Produced by Succubus Malvina]

The two Players examined the clothing inside and out, momentarily speechless.

Anakin dove back into the wardrobe for a more thorough search. She found a pair of large underpants among a pile of cloaks, tailored from beige cloaks, just past the knee in length, with specially sewn deep pockets, and the waist was tied with magically enhanced vines.

Anakin compared the old man’s shirt and underpants, falling into deep silence—this style was too similar to a street old man and was entirely out of place in this delicate and beautiful Western fantasy palace.

Solo found a pile of draft paper at the bottom of the drawer, with clothing cutting diagrams drawn on it. “What is… this?”

Anakin approached with the underpants, her gaze suddenly freezing.

It hastily drew designs for cutting the old man’s shirt, large underpants, and simple guard clothing. The annotations were modern, in the succubus language, and…

“This is the modern basic method, isn’t it?” She muttered. “I have customized armor in Grape Collar. Those NPCs didn’t do it this way.”

“But succubus can’t be Players, so they can’t choose this race.” Solo stared blankly at the design in his hand. “According to what Doni said, Ma…Knight Ma-something has been friends with the queen since childhood. We have only been trapped for two months.”

Anakin’s mind was equally confused.

The developers of “Tahe” invited a large number of excellent professional and amateur Players, popular game anchors, gaming KOLs, and even a few people who like to study game culture. This showed that they were full of sincerity.

However, from the current point of view, many scoundrels had mixed in among the Players.

No one knew how they entered the game. These people weren’t even in the same novice village as a normal Player, and most joined the Eternal Church… This was the most shocking secret they had discovered so far.

“Hermitage has been exploring the direction of ‘the game has problems’, right?” Anakin said, her voice dry.

“Yes, ‘Mentor’ has been leading the group in research.”

Solo rigidly sat on the edge of the bed, still holding those few design drawings.

“The most recognized opinion in the Hermitage was the ‘Terrorist Attack Theory’—the game has been hijacked and infiltrated by terrorists aiming to achieve some purpose. They said if it were an internal staff going mad, they couldn’t bring in so many scumbags.”

This was also the view of the vast majority of Players.

Those trapped Players who had been invited by the official to experience the game had a good understanding of the game. The “Homeward Saints”, “Amazon,” and “Hermitage”—these three guilds had very clear existences.

Solo’s “Hermitage” was the only non-combat guild.

It was led by a university professor who loved gaming culture, was independent, and strived to be objective. The members came from all walks of life, hiding in every corner of this world.

The members had only three goals: try to survive, collect information, and figure out what the hell is going on in this world.

Over the past two months, the Players’ understanding had gradually unified.

This world was a game hijacked by terrorists. As long as you could find a way to clear the game, everyone might be able to exit.

However…

“Terrorist organizations obtaining login devices and permissions, implanting criminals, I can understand.” Anakin stared at the old man’s shirt spread out on the bed. “They have no ability and no need to turn people into game monsters, right…?”

Solo swallowed. “Perhaps, it’s a game bug. Someone logged into a monster model.”

“Everyone has counted the list. Normal Players aren’t missing.” Anakin clutched the old man’s shirt.

“The system is still there. Don’t diverge too much. It must be those criminals illegally logging in, creating such bugs… You also said that normal Players aren’t missing. We know those monsters aren’t our own. Isn’t this enough?”

Solo insisted, his voice loud and anxious, containing a trace of fear.

Anakin gave a bitter smile. She knew what he was afraid of. People always preferred to believe what they wanted to believe. No Player was willing to accept the idea that “there may be something wrong with the game itself.”

And… And this really didn’t prove anything unless they could find that succubus knight and confront her in person.

She hoped those two NPCs could survive safely. This time, she also had to step out of the quest and genuinely investigate this matter.

Various mechanisms collapsed, and characters decayed after logging out. All could be attributed to terrorists destroying the game program.

But if there were really unrelated ordinary people turning into monsters… Could this game still be considered a “game”?

“This world has normal quests, and there is also a Demon King. Except for games, where else would there be a deliberately set final boss?” At the bedside, Rogue Solo was still murmuring softly, not knowing who he wanted to convince. “Defeating the Demon King is clearing the game. Clearing the game means going home… Clearing the game means going home. This must be the case…”

……

“That is part of the Demon King’s minions!” A female voice yelled from behind Nol.

The Devil King’s minions? …That thing?

Nol looked towards the “Thousand-Hand Nightmare” not far away, while Teest remained the same, ignoring the stranger’s words and quickly rushing towards the target nearby.

Nol didn’t think that the “Thousand-Hand Nightmare” was very strong. Roughly estimating its strength, it wasn’t a match for both of them. However, even at this moment, it was still emitting that strange aura that made him feel uncomfortable all over.

[Teest, danger!] Nol shouted in his mind.

This time, Teest abruptly stopped with a sharp and neat brake and easily jumped back as if inertia didn’t exist for him. [What’s wrong, honey?]

[What that person said makes sense. We’re not in a rush. We should be cautious,] Nol thought.

[But I have a better idea.] Teest’s thought came with a smile.

Immediately, Nol watched as Teest changed his step and turned into a silver whirlwind, rushing in the direction where the woman’s voice came from.

“What the fuck—!” The woman yelled in a confused common language, leaping out of her hiding place and running away.

She was quite far from them, and Nol could only see a silhouette.

The silhouette was almost like a living skeleton, but healthier than any succubus he had seen. Her clothes were a bit weird, and she was holding something curved overhead in her right hand, the outline resembling a crowbar.

“Wait!” Nol paused for a half-second, not caring about the Nightmare creature. “Wait, I also—”

Before he could shout out, the figure of the succubus disappeared into the fog.

Nol caught up, panting, and gripped the hem of Teest’s robe. “She kindly reminded us. Why did you scare her off?!” Damn, she could have been his neighbor!

“Look at the strength, the intention to fight, and the purpose. The instinctive reaction will not lie,” Teest said indifferently. “That guy is a female succubus. She’s not weak and has no intention of being our enemy. She’s very good at escaping, and she has a clear direction of escape. She definitely has a base.”

Although Teest appeared polite and gentlemanly on the surface, Nol suspected that this guy automatically regarded all breathing entities as enemies.

Now the compatriot was scared away. Nol rubbed his temples hard and sighed. “Consult me next time.”

Teest slightly turned his head. “No. Such probing requires the element of surprise.”

Fine. Nol wiped his face.

No matter how much sharp emotion he accumulated, in the face of this guy, they would collapse into a soft feeling of powerlessness.

At least they knew that there might be a succubus neighbor here, and the neighbor seemed to be in a good mental state.

Nol thought for a while on the spot and gently tapped Teest’s tail tip.

“Since the person is lost. Let’s go back first.”

“What do you mean the person is lost? I can continue tracking,” Teest muttered.

“Chase now or later, it’s all chasing. Give her some time to recover. If we chase now, it’s no different from an actual chase.” Nol shook his head. “Let’s check on that ‘Demon King’s minion’ first.”

He had seen the explanation of “Devil King’s minions” in history books.

They were mainly distributed around the border of the Desolation Islands and basically didn’t appear in inland areas. The book said they were monsters formed by being corrupted by the “aura of the Demon King”. They were irrational, uncommunicative, irredeemable, and full of malice towards everything.

The description was vague, and the setting was quite cliché. He didn’t know how many times he had seen it in various works.

‘Seeing is believing,’ Nol thought.

The surrounding area was still a dark nightmare scene, and the monster didn’t catch up. Nol skillfully released the invisibility spell and stepped on the path he came by.

By the time he reached the location, Nol almost couldn’t hold back and really vomited—

The earth wall he erected had already completely collapsed, and the originally empty ground was now crowded with those “Thousand-Hand Nightmares”.

They were packed like City A’s subway during peak hours, their bodies almost melting into one another, and it was impossible to distinguish them apart.

A thousand monsters? Ten thousand? Nol couldn’t count. He only saw endless, interlacing, skinny arms and the numerous human-like palms on them.

It was as if a new layer of shrubbery made of flesh and blood had grown in the forest.

Nol smelled a strong scent of blood—the wounded monster was surrounded in the middle, with nearby monsters surging incessantly. Along with the blood scent, there was also the faint sound of flesh being torn apart.

The monsters in the outer ring were slowly waving their arms, their fingers slowly twitching, like blind people exploring in a strange environment.

…Here, Nol couldn’t use his proudest summoning technique; it was difficult for him to deal with enemies of this scale.

A chill went through Nol’s heart.

No wonder the basic requirement of the mission “Survive or Die” was to “leave the Dream Edge alive.” Facing these monsters, they seemed to have no choice but to run away.

…How many of these things are there?

…How are they going to break through this sea of monsters’ tactics?

…The succubi are surrounded by them layer by layer. What can they do to save the succubi tribe?

“Wow, it would be strange if those succubi could win. Once these things step in, they could crush all the succubi.” Teest evidently thought of the same thing and almost whistled.

“Honey, if you want to find out the truth, you don’t have much time left.”

Nol remained silent.

“You’re not still thinking of saving those succubi, are you? From the hands of these things?”

Teest chuckled at the pun about “hands”, poking Nol in the chest with the tip of his tail. “No offense, the shadow wolf is much smarter than these filthy things. Although you are very charming, you better not think about getting along with them.”

‘Indeed,’ Nol thought.

The shadow wolf was at least filled with the vitality of normal creatures. The things in front of him only emitted emptiness and death.

Endless terrifying monsters, the walking dead succubi… this problem was really tough.

Nol manipulated the flesh under his collarbone to disappear and casually caught Teest’s precious coin. Oddly, even after residing in his stomach acid for a moment, the blood stain on the coin seemed to have seeped into the metal and remained extremely conspicuous.

And the scratches on that gold wheel didn’t seem like normal scratches; they looked more like irregularly carved marks.

“You take it back first,” Nol said, the flesh in his abdomen silently recovering.

The coin still held his body temperature, lying warmly in his palm. Teest took the coin, casually tossed it in his hand, then slapped it on the back of his hand.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m making a bet with myself,” Teest said lightly. “If the coin is heads, I’ll assist you—no matter how much I hate it—in saving this tribe; if it’s tails, I’ll look for a way out first.”

He continued, showing a bright smile, “Then, when you fail the ‘perfect clearance’ challenge, I’ll snatch you out of here.”

Nol was silent for two seconds. “What’s the answer?”

“Unfortunately, it’s heads.” Teest didn’t sound very happy.

“You can actually control the coin flip, right?” Nol couldn’t help but pinch the bridge of his nose.

“Unfortunately, yes.” Teest sounded even unhappier. “Making a decision is hard. I need a bit of ceremony.”

Nol gave up on understanding his thought process. “Thank you for your full support. Is your ceremony done yet?”

“No,” Teest said unhappily. “You know, I’m very fickle. So, I need one final step—”

Teest walked in front of Nol and stretched out his hand. The hot coin was pressed again against Nol’s lips with just the right amount of force.

The gold sank into the soft, red flesh, and the edge of the coin knocked against Nol’s teeth, making a ‘clink’ sound.

“Please keep it for me,” Teest whispered.

“So you won’t leave me?”

Nol didn’t swallow the coin immediately. Teest’s knuckles were resting on his chin, astonishingly warm.

“No, no, no.” Teest’s voice lifted slightly. “This way, when I want to leave you, I will hesitate—very, very much.”

“This way, you will have a chance to grab my tail, honey.”

Nol stared at those nearly sincere golden eyes. He slightly opened his lips and swallowed the coin again.

This time, he swallowed slowly, almost provocatively. “Then I will definitely hold on tightly and never let go.”

Teest laughed as he withdrew his finger. The hand slowly approached his waist, then swiftly waved—only to see a flash of sword light, and several trees in the distance fell with a crash.

A familiar female voice screamed from the bushes. The person hiding inside was pressed perfectly.

“It seems everyone has the same idea.”

Teest rushed towards the bushes. “…Nobody likes to let go of their prey easily.”

The author has something to say:

Another neighbor is online! Roughly estimated, there are probably a thousand people in Nol’s community?

Neighbor: (Cursing loudly)

Neighbor: You’re all being sweet! What do you care about me?!

Chapter 54: The Demon King’s Minions

For the two Players, in the blink of an eye, those two NPCs disappeared along with the thick fog. Just a few steps away, they couldn’t see anything clearly, as the whole process was frighteningly fast.

Solo suppressed a scream that was stuck in his throat. He was stunned in place for a full five seconds. “Fuck, it’s over—!”

Triggering the event right from the start, this quest is too perverse! They had just stepped into the Dream Forest on the first day. There should at least be some time to get familiar.

Were quests normally arranged like this, with absolutely no room for error? Did they also need them to tie those two NPCs to their belts and walk them like dogs…?

“Alright, alright, stop wailing.”

Anakin was equally tense. She immediately summoned the quest dialog box to repeatedly confirm. “The condition ‘Assist in saving the soon-to-be extinct succubus tribe’ is still there. Those two must still be alive—at least they haven’t both died.”

After all, those two NPCs were the ones who proposed the “rescue”. If they had died just now, the quest condition would certainly have been grayed out—otherwise, with the assisted ones gone, how could the Players achieve “perfect completion”?

“Yeah, yeah, those two guys really look extraordinary. They definitely have a big plot on them—yeah, a big plot.” Rogue Solo patted his chest, trying to comfort himself.

Anakin held her magic wand half-raised cautiously, and the two Players shifted towards the direction where Teest and the others disappeared.

They scanned every detail with their eyes. The environment where the two disappeared was no different from the surroundings. Unusual leaf arrangements, deformed trees, stones shining with special glows… Nothing, absolutely nothing.

So they boldly followed the mist, traveling through the dense fog, still unable to achieve any results.

“The attacker probably really thought that the white-haired one was a succubus, so they made a move.”

Solo, circling around the same tree for the fifth time, couldn’t help but speak up. “I vaguely saw it. The black-haired one made a forward movement at the end. It didn’t seem like he was taken away actively.”

“If you keep calling them ‘white hair’ and ‘black hair’ so casually, be careful when you say it in front of them. Their goodwill might plummet… tsk tsk tsk.” Anakin rested against a tree, responding irritably.

“Why do Western names have to be so hard to remember? It hurts my brain!” Solo argued loudly. “Movies are my limit. You know I can’t watch series. I forget who is who by the second episode.”

Anakin curled her lips. “Alright, I was actually considering this just now too. The mechanism in the mist may indeed be targeted only at succubi.”

“Sister, I think it’s useless for us to keep looking. How about you wear the succubus costume?” Solo suggested.

“Okay, you dress me up.”

A few minutes later, a freshly made pair of succubus siblings stepped on the fallen leaves.

Although their tails weren’t stiff, they hung stiffly, like genuine leather decorations bought online. One could say they looked quite soulless.

“It’s hard to control. It reminds me of when I first learned to ride a bike.” Anakin grinned. “I saw Landus controlling it quite easily. Could that guy really be a succubus?”

As she said this, she casually grabbed Solo’s tail. The latter immediately screamed and sat on the ground.

“Why are you pulling so hard?!” His tail flapped around like a live fish.

“Does it hurt that much?” Anakin curiously touched her own tail. This touch was critical. She shivered all over—that feeling wasn’t pain but was more like sensitive skin being stimulated. The surface of her tail seemed to be made of sole skin. Touching it made her extremely uncomfortable.

“Uhh, that Landus wrapped his tail around someone’s wrist, I thought…” she said while sucking in cold air.

“That white-haired brother is really fierce.” Solo wobbled to his feet. “My legs went soft just now. Oh god.”

The two semi-finished succubi wandered around the forest for a long time, but the surroundings were still quiet and beautiful.

“I’m wondering too. Could that white-haired brother really be a succubus? Or are we just too novice, and they look down on us…” Solo stared blankly at the fog, murmuring as he squatted under a tree.

“Then we can only follow the NPCs’ instructions.” Anakin squatted ungracefully a few steps away, both looking like idle old men at a village entrance.

“The NPCs’ instructions?”

“Yes, before they disappeared, they said they would go back and inquire about that female knight.”

Anakin stood up. Behind the tree trunk, she changed back to her original attire. “Old rules. If the way of finding people doesn’t work, we follow the process first.”

Seeing only two humans coming back, Succubus Doni, in charge of reception, said nothing and just looked at them expressionlessly.

“They said they need to investigate thoroughly,” Anakin said in her gentle and holy voice, her smile even more perfect than her voice. “The Lord sent us back to investigate some minor things.”

Doni still looked at them coldly. “This is not a place where humans can wander around.”

“We want to see the room of that female knight—Miss Malvina.” Anakin skillfully ignored his unfriendly attitude. “Our companions want to do their best to find the queen. They don’t want to miss any clues.”

She emphasized the lines “our companions” and “do their best”.

The skeletal-looking succubus narrowed his eyes. He finally looked at the two Players, and the corners of his mouth twitched. “Fine, but we have conditions. Just like last night, you need to keep providing life energy until you leave this place.”

Rogue Solo opened his mouth, his cheeks gradually reddening. “What, last night it was you…”

“I have no objections.” Anakin quickly covered her cousin’s mouth, suspecting that if she were a bit slower, this guy would ask the succubus if they could customize the plot.

“…I have no objections either.” Solo finally complied.

Doni gave a perfunctory nod, extending his thin arm. “Then please follow me… Malvina’s room, right? She lives nearby.”

“Why not tell them about Malvina? Since they are looking for the queen, this is pretty important, right?” Along the way, Solo couldn’t help but ask.

Doni glanced at him, clearly not wanting to deal with this human, but ‘beggars can’t be choosers*’ was also a fact.

*The mouth that has eaten someone’s food is soft (吃人嘴软) Idiom referring the feeling of obligation or gratitude that one feels after accepting a gift or favor from someone else.

“Malvina is the one among us who cares the most about our race. She always left food for the weak and became weaker faster than anyone. Two months ago, she almost died.”

He narrated in a flat tone. “Since then, her mind hasn’t been right—perhaps due to extreme despair, Malvina has become erratic and is no longer so devoted to the tribe and the queen. She and the queen disappeared separately. The two cannot be discussed as one.”

They reached the end of the corridor, and Succubus Doni stopped in front of a beautiful double door. “This is Malvina’s residence. You can stay as long as you want. Just make sure to sleep every day.”

Anakin and Solo looked at each other and almost simultaneously reached out their hands to push the door open.

……

The smoke was filled with a bitter, fishy stench, reminiscent of the thick smoke produced by burning inferior coal. Nol tightly hugged Teest’s waist, incessantly coughing due to the strange mist.

The thick mist hadn’t yet dissipated when a pair of hands suddenly choked him from behind.

No, more than one pair of hands.

Nol’s arms were tightly gripped by five or six hands, and his ankles were being dragged down fiercely by cold palms. The cloak on his body was also being pulled tightly, making it hard for him to breathe… If he indeed needed to breathe.

It seemed like they were planning to peel him off Teest and kill him swiftly, and the order of doing these two things seemed quite indifferent.

Teest’s tail was tightly curled in his hand, obviously not in a good situation either. This encounter wasn’t a quest design—they were facing an opponent who was adept at seizing the opportunity to strike when one was sick, catching them at a very tricky time.

Nol ignored the hands on his neck, clinging onto Teest like a drowning man.

[Bloodline Suppression] activated.

The fear effect of [Bloodline Suppression] took effect.

[Death Threat] conditions were met. The target had become immobilized for five seconds.

…The Mad Monk certainly wouldn’t miss this opportunity.

Sure enough, Teest’s tense tail suddenly relaxed, and then the muscles in his waist tightened.

Nol heard the dull sound of a blade cutting through flesh and bone, followed by the sound of a heavy object falling—the arms that had been choking them suddenly lightened, and a warm liquid drenched Nol.

Throughout, he hadn’t let go of Teest. The staff almost got dragged away by those hands. Kando opened its crystal shell like a hermit crab, and its candle tears tightly entangled Nol’s clothes, barely avoiding disaster.

Something let out a painful shriek and ran away. Nol tentatively opens his eyes. His eyelids were glued together with thick plasma.

The blood emitted a stench like rotting flesh, appearing to be as black as oil.

“Shh, shh—it’s okay now. Well done.”

Teest spoke softly. The “Betrayer” had transformed into a long sword with thick black blood sliding down its blade. “You can let go of me now.”

Nol let go of his arms and wiped the black blood on his face. He then grabbed the staff with his blood-covered hand.

Kando rolled its eyes several times but cautiously didn’t reveal itself, quickly retracting back into its disguised crystal shell—however, this time, it closed its shell with unusual loudness.

The mist had mostly dissipated, allowing Nol to finally see the nearby scenery.

If the forest at the Dream Edge was like the Black Forest with a cute dreamy filter added, the forest in front of him was the horror movie-exclusive dark version—

The trees were still the same, but the colors and atmosphere had become especially oppressive. The sky, once ambiguously soft, had turned into a moonless, starless night.

Through night vision, Nol also clearly saw what attacked them.

It was a… monster that he couldn’t simply summarize.

This thing was large, entirely black, and barely resembled the dried corpse of a war horse in size. Unlike the clean and refreshing pure black of the shadow wolf, its body surface was like sewer sludge, reflecting a sticky light.

And it didn’t have a head on its neck.

Its dried neck was like a tree trunk, branching and branching again, extending dozens of “branch arms” that kept waving, and each arm ended with a human hand.

Currently, nearly half of its arms had been severed by Teest, and black blood was still pouring out endlessly.

The fingers of the remaining hands were frantically moving, like mad spiders. A blurred, hoarse shriek came from inside it, and it was unknown which organ was making the sound.

After the incident with the Lord of the Whitebird City, Nol thought he had developed some resistance to these inexplicable creatures. However, the familiar nauseous feeling returned, and he almost retched out loud.

[It… its body is like a nightmare.] Nol clamped his hand over his mouth, reminding Teest in his thoughts.

Nightmares, the old foes of succubi.

Nightmares also controlled dreams, drawing life force from them. However, they preferred nightmares—apart from a few with peculiar tastes, most people didn’t experience erotic dreams and nightmares at the same time. There was serious predatory conflict between these two species.

If succubi could use dreams within dreams to hide their bases, then it made sense that Nightmares could use them to capture prey… The problem was, no matter how he looked at it, this thing only had the skeleton and a touch of a Nightmare.

A Nightmare was supposed to be a robust warhorse with a mane burning in dark red flames. Its black fur should be sleek and healthy, and its blood should be an ordinary red color.

They would only politely feed on nightmares and wouldn’t physically attack their targets.

“I know about Nightmares. This thing looks more like a modified corpse of a Nightmare,” Teest commented. “You’re indeed an expert, recognizing it.”

The creature’s skinny arms were moving sinisterly as it started circling them slowly. Nol quickly lifted his staff, standing back-to-back with Teest.

It emitted an aura that made Nol very uncomfortable. Despite knowing that it would be hard for it to kill them again, the weird, icy feeling still made Nol shiver.

If it used the same tactics to capture the succubi, the weakened succubi indeed couldn’t resist. The problem was, where did those captured succubi go? Were they eaten by this thing, or…

Jingle.

With a crisp sound, an old, rounded gold wheel appeared on the fallen leaves, emitting a glaring golden light in the surrounding darkness.

Blood stained the coin, precisely on the eye of the engraved king’s face, leaving very fine traces, like a line of bloody tears.

The other side of the coin was engraved with leaves and the sun. The surface, which should have been smooth, was full of scratches, appearing somewhat dim.

Rolling around, the coin rolled under the “Thousand-Hand Nightmare”, as if following it.

One by one, identical coins rolled out from the darkness, gathering in groups behind the “Thousand-Hand Nightmare”, rolling together, bringing a sense of absurd unreality.

The monster was gradually narrowing the encirclement. The group of coins was getting larger and closer, grinding over the fallen leaves like a swarm of insects.

Teest’s tail gently pressed against Nol’s lower back, coiling tightly again. He moved, seemingly wanting to protect his pouch.

“Is what you saw earlier this?” Nol asked.

“Yes,” Teest admitted. “Honey, summon something. I don’t want them getting any closer—I don’t want to lose the real thing.”

…If this creature indeed had the characteristics of a Nightmare, this coin probably had significant meaning to Teest, and not in a good way.

A cake smashed on the ground along with the blood-stained gold wheel. He seemed to have touched a bit—a little bit—of the soul belonging to the Mad Monk that was human.

“I tried just now. I can’t summon corpses here. It seems dreams within dreams are special.” Nol made a sound of agreement, suppressing his urge to inquire further. “But I have an idea. Teest, take out the real thing.”

Teest titled his head, watching Nol from the corner of his eye. His left hand tightly grasped the pouch, and his tail rummaged inside for a moment before coiling around an old gold coin.

“What next?” Teest asked, his tail tip tightly wrapping the coin.

“Then face me.” Nol said, releasing a neat and sharp spell creating a wall of earth.

With the enhancement of the magic staff, the soil arched, and the fallen leaves quickly rose. A tall and hard mud wall was raised, temporarily blocking the creature and the group of coins outside.

Teest silently turned around, and Nol smiled at him, slightly opening his mouth.

He pointed to the tip of his bright red tongue with a calm and natural expression. “Please keep it here.”

Once this battle was over, he could let the flesh disappear. The coin would directly fall from his stomach. After all, stomach acid couldn’t corrode gold.

Teest’s expression froze.

“Time is limited.” Nol urged him, “Hurry up.”

Finally, Teest silently took out the coin from the tip of his tail. He didn’t hand it to Nol but pinched it with his fingertips and gently pressed it to Nol’s lips.

Nol raised his eyebrows and, in the end, neither questioned nor avoided it. His tongue tip curled around Teest’s fingertip, prying away the coin, and successfully clamped it between his lips. Then, he frowned slightly. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, and the small coin was successfully swallowed.

“…Cough cough.”

Nol wiped his lips. The metal was too hard that he was still choking a bit. “Now you can play freely, Mr. Mad Monk—fortunately, your treasure is a coin. If it were a ball of gold thread or something, I would be powerless.”

Teest stared at Nol’s lips and slowly showed a smile. “I’m really lucky, aren’t I? …You are right. Treasures should be kept together.”

The next moment, the mud wall behind him collapsed. Nol raised his magic staff, and the hot wind brought up Teest’s hair strands. A terrifying fireball blasted towards that creature. The rain-like jumping coins flickered with fire and poured towards them.

With his back to the exploding dark flames, Teest curved his eyes.

He skillfully grabbed Nol’s hand and left a light kiss on the back of his hand. Then he turned around. The long sword in his hand drew an orange arc of light.

But before they set off, they had already launched [Betrayal Overture], Nol thought.

However, this problem only troubled him for a moment. In the instant, he raised his magic staff, and a recovery spell shot out.

“Stop!”

At this time, behind them, a woman’s voice shouted. “Don’t attack anymore. Be careful, or you’ll attract more!”

“Those are the Demon King’s minions!” she shouted hoarsely.

……

Anakin paced around in the female knight’s room. It was a large and open room, showing that Malvina didn’t have many personal belongings.

Solo was desperately searching near the desk. “Maybe she wrote a diary… There should be some diary hints in this situation!”

Anakin sighed as she closed another weapon cabinet. “Not every key figure has the habit of keeping a diary. Otherwise, it would be too ridiculous.”

“This place is almost like a succubus template room. There are no clues at all.” Solo painfully flipped through those books. “Sister, are we looking in the wrong direction?”

Anakin sighed even louder. “They won’t let us see the Queen’s residence. Let’s finish searching here first.”

At this moment, Anakin was checking the only wardrobe in the room. She had to agree with Solo’s opinion. This Malvina really didn’t have any personality to dig into.

The female knight’s clothes were all basic succubus styles, rows of square white cloth hanging full of the closet; the scene was like copy-paste. Her underwear was also folded neatly. Anakin could only see that she was a very disciplined person… and that was it.

Maybe they really were looking in the wrong direction. She numbly shuffled through each succubus suit.

Suddenly, her hand stopped.

Anakin hissed and pulled out one of the clothes—it was also white and hung with other white clothes that she almost missed it.

The fabric of that garment was the same as the other clothes but had very fine stitches, showing it was skillfully modified.

…And its shape, every person from Country C would be incredibly familiar with it.

Anakin held it up and flipped it back and forth, the puzzlement on her face growing thicker. Solo glanced over with his mouth wide open.

A few seconds later, he spoke up even more puzzled—

“Is this… an old man’s shirt?”

Chapter 53: The Queen and the Knight

The real world.

Shadow Wolf Ben happily ran through the Black Forest. It was a place void of perennial ice and snow, with only soft grass and fallen leaves underfoot. The branches were laden with sweet fruits, and the antelopes and three-horned sheep were as plump as balls, full of rich fats.

After leaving the ice land, it no longer had to fall into a periodic sleep and didn’t need to target specific prey. Now it was full of strength, eating whatever it wanted and rolling wherever it liked.

Within just a few days, Ben realized it had grown plumper.

This isn’t good,’ it thought solemnly.

It was a mighty shadow wolf and should pursue a higher quality of life instead of mimicking the lifestyle of pigs. Maybe it could catch some prey for that white-haired human. He could make them even more delicious.

So, it killed a three-horned sheep and gently held it in its mouth, running toward the edge of the forest.

The Black Forest was filled with a variety of scents, one of which was very familiar and grabbed its attention. Shadow Wolf Ben hesitated for only a half-second, quickly succumbing to curiosity. It made a sharp turn and ran in the direction of that familiar scent—

Officer Rosen was about to bite into a chicken leg when he was almost choked by the sudden appearance of a wolf’s head.

“What?” He clutched the chicken leg bewilderingly, almost using it to target the shadow wolf.

“It’s that shadow wolf.” Dr. Zhu calmly threw wood into the fire. “I smelled it. I didn’t expect it to arrive so fast… Miss Lynn, don’t worry. This is Xu Yue’s wolf.”

Ben sat down, tilting its head in confusion, reflecting the images of six figures in its round red eyes—Elf Rosen and Wolfkin Julie, whose scents it recognized.

Next to Julie was a Puppet Witch that was squinting at it, her hands clutching a bizarre gun.

Clockwise, there was a Banshee with a giant Five-Eyed Crow on her shoulder, holding a small transparent ghost, watching Ben warily. The crow also spread its huge wings, trying to protect the person beside it.

Ah it’s over. Too many people.

In Night of the Hunt, there were at most four Players. It could also count to four. Now, there were more than five living creatures with Players’ auras! Terrible, really scary.

Ben dumbly opened its mouth, and the three-horned sheep crashed to the ground.

“Is Mr. Xu sending us food?” The Banshee asked nervously.

Rosen looked at the stiff shadow wolf. It was terrifying as an enemy, but as a companion, it seemed foolishly distressing.

“I guess not. Xu Yue asked everyone to wait in Red Mist Valley. He didn’t say he would send the shadow wolf for support,” Rosen said.

“But we’ve been waiting for days,” the Banshee said nervously. “Is that Xu Yue really reliable? Did something happen to him on the way? Should we contact him? Didn’t Sister Lynn say she has a way?”

Wolfkin Julie said gently, “Miss Qian, Xu Yue said he’d be at most two weeks late. Contacting him rashly might cause him trouble… You’re safe with us.”

It took a while for the Banshee to respond with a worried “mm”.

The Banshee, shrouded in a gray cloak, looked slim.

At first glance, the cloak seemed to be dirty linen, but upon closer inspection, it seemed to be something grown from her skin, similar to hair. The Banshee’s pale face and bloodshot red eyes peeked from the “cloak”, somewhat frightening.

“Lynn is constantly watching the surroundings,” the giant crow comforted. “Sisi, don’t be afraid.”

“I’m not afraid. I’m worried about our child. You, as the father, should be more mindful. The baby is scared to death,” the Banshee said, holding the ghost tighter.

Her arms futilely passed through the pearly white ghost, and the little girl’s ghost made a pose of being held tightly, clinging to her mother. The appearance of the shadow wolf did scare the little girl. She almost crawled into the Banshee’s body.

The shadow wolf kept staring at them, and they didn’t know what it was thinking. Witch Lynn couldn’t sit still any longer. She changed her position to block the shadow wolf’s view.

“Since they’re letting this guy run around, Xu Yue and his group are probably in a quite troublesome dungeon.” Rosen finally bit into a chicken leg, chewing and mumbling, “This thing is stupid but powerful in a fight. They won’t easily give it up.”

“Agreed.” Lynn glanced at the giant black wolf.

After parting with Nol and the others, she had been heading towards various major cities. When she received Nol’s invitation, she was considering going around Grape Collar, so she met up with Officer Luo and the others.

During this time, Lynn had done one thing—she hid her dolls at every transport hub near several major cities.

Through the eyes of the dolls, she tried her best to observe everything.

Even if the neighbors were thrown into this messy world and turned into monsters, they would still instinctively approach and seek help from humans… But the humans here may not necessarily be friendly. She must find the “abnormally behaving” monsters before the Temple did.

Along the way, Lynn hadn’t been able to find any traces of her sister. But near Grape Collar, she discovered a family of three wandering around in the same area but never recognizing each other.

The Banshee mother, the giant Five-Eyed Crow Father, and the Ghost Daughter.

Three standard monsters, and also the family living in Unit 302, Building 8, Joy Garden.

When Witch Lynn found them, the family was severely shocked, almost on the verge of a mental breakdown. The Crow Father had been shot in the wing by a native. If it weren’t for encountering Rosen, who knew healing magic, he might have been disabled.

Fortunately, Luo and Zhu had dealings with this family. Having acquaintances around, the family’s spirits lifted quite a bit.

“Sisi, didn’t you always like the curtains at Mr. Xu’s house? You always mention them every time we pass by.”

The Crow Father tried to lighten the mood. “This time we might be able to catch them—you can ask him face-to-face where he bought them, and we will buy them when we go back, no matter the cost.”

The Banshee paused, then lowered her head, gently patting the Ghost Daughter’s head. “Mm, we’ll buy them when we go back.”

Lynn unconsciously raised the corner of her mouth, but the next second, the smile froze on her face. She cried out in pain, covering her left eye. “Investigation Knights!”

Her doll placed on the edge of the Black Forest had been discovered.

In the last vision of the doll, a young knight with a smile on his face ruthlessly stabbed it down. The backlash of magic pain was like a sharp tool, causing Lynn to almost scream.

Rosen immediately threw away the chicken bone in his hand, his face elongating as he recited a concealment spell. The air around started fluctuating, and the figures of six people evaporated and disappeared on the spot.

Julie stood up. Her fur bristled, and the bitter scent of a beast emanated from her, covering other scents.

[Mirage] [Territory Declaration]

The Banshee pursed her lips, and a subtle sense of rejection filled the surrounding space. Originally, approaching beasts turned around; birds perched on branches fluttered away.

The giant Crow’s five eyes lit up in red. He stood on the Banshee’s shoulder, vigilantly watching in a certain direction.

[Heart of Hate] [Ominous Warning]

When Lynn recovered, the neighbors’ magic had already woven into an invisible protective fortress.

She whistled, and dolls made of mud and leaves crawled out, emitting an exceptionally weird and strong aura, running in all directions.

[Distraction Toys]

Finally, the Puppet Witch twitched the corners of her mouth. She took off the animal bone stuck with dragonfly wings from her belt and threw it to the shadow wolf.

“You run away too!” she said hoarsely.

The shadow wolf stopped watching and ran after the bone with its tongue out, leaving the fat three-horned sheep behind.

The sheep head was facing the direction of the six neighbors with its hollow eyes reflecting nothing.

The edge of the Black Forest.

“…Interesting.” Eugene pulled out the sword embedded in the doll’s skull. “This Puppet Witch is too smart.”

“Captain?”

“Using the fewest dolls to monitor the largest area. You all have to learn from her arrangement method… This isn’t the intelligence a normal monster should have.” Eugene kicked the damaged doll.

They heard the news that Saint Anakin had been dispatched and came to inspect and support but didn’t expect this surprise.

“It’s likely an extraplanar monster.” A young knight pondered. “Should we prioritize capturing it? I mean, before the Saints notice—”

“No, no. Its response was too perfect, and this forest is too big. We won’t be able to capture it.”

Eugene smiled. “…I am more worried about something else.”

His metal boots pressed slightly, and with a crisp sound, the ceramic doll under his feet shattered. “The monsters’ individual combat capability is stronger than humans, but they aren’t a match for humans. Do you all know why?”

“Because ‘monsters’ only fight alone. Even if they act in groups, they will only be with their own kind. The weaknesses are easy to grasp?” The young knight answered actively.

“And humans know to let different professions cooperate and act in teams,” the middle-aged knight who had been following Eugene added.

Eugene clapped his hands approvingly, the gauntlets making a crisp sound.

“Very good. Suppose a particularly intelligent leader appears among these extraplanar monsters, making these powerful monsters learn to cooperate… What would happen?”

“Impossible.”

The middle-aged knight hesitated for a moment. “Captain, even the Saints know nothing about this world. These extraplanar monsters are randomly distributed. They probably don’t even understand their own situation. How could they easily unite.”

Eugene shrugged. “Who knows?”

“The Goddess arranged these messy ‘extraplanar monsters’; it must be her intention—maybe she’s trying to use this as bait to fish out the ‘monster among monsters’.”

…….

[Sometimes I think you’re even more abnormal than a ‘monster’ like me.]

When Teest said this, they were walking in circles in the Dream Forest. The fallen leaves were soft, but Nol was stepping on them very forcefully, as if they were his enemies from a previous life.

Teest was eating honey soft cakes from his waist bag while his thoughts were coming in like rapid fire. [Why are you so concerned about those succubi? Their queen deceives the group at will, and they are willing to deceive themselves. It’s not your concern.]

This was sincere.

Teest originally thought that otherworldly people were somewhat naïve and liked to meddle in others’ affairs. But through interactions along the way, he found that only Nol’s “helping syndrome” was especially severe—most otherworldly people tend to avoid trouble to save their own lives.

Even for the sake of quest rewards, Nol was too serious.

[Honey, you might as well pay more attention to those two Players. I suspect they have received related quests.] Seeing Nol not responding, Teest continued to mumble.

Nol still didn’t respond; he was obviously lost in thought, his feet still stepping hard on the leaves. Even Anakin and Solo noticed his abnormality and deliberately kept their distance.

[Alright, then pay more attention to me.]

Teest ate the last bit of the soft honey cake and wrapped his tail around Nol’s wrist, rubbing gently. [Help your pitiful husband analyze the current situation, all-knowing Mr. Lich.]

Nol finally lightened his steps, shook his head, and finally came back to his senses.

“The succubi made it very clear. Find the bewilderment grass, and you can find the queen.” He looked at Teest and repeated dryly, “So far, this is a game of hide-and-seek with hints, simpler than that Margret’s quest.”

The “heir selection” wasn’t their actual quest. The difficulty of the quest was how to save the succubi tribe. Nol didn’t think that “the Mad Monk becoming the heir” had any positive impact on this tribe.

All he was thinking about now was finding the culprit causing all this and grinding them into pieces.

The reason Nol was still looking for the runaway succubus queen was just to get information from her—

As a queen, even if she didn’t know the reason for the succubi’s disappearance, she should know why Queen Hyacinth committed suicide years ago. Nol intuitively felt that this matter was related to the current situation of the succubi, and he cared a lot about it.

Nol changed his mind. Even if he didn’t make a big appearance in front of the Players, he must figure out what was going on in this ghost of a place.

“Can I, um, say something?” Solo, who was walking behind them, raised his hand. “About that mad queen, the succubi are hiding part of the truth, which I overheard outside the palace.”

“Please tell me.” Nol slowed down.

“Together with the queen who disappeared, there was also her female knight Malvina…” Solo took a breath and spoke slowly.

Nol listened attentively, his lips almost forming a line.

According to Succubus Doni, Queen Wilimina always had a tendency to be addicted to bewilderment grass.

Bewilderment grass was a special herb that grew near the succubi tribe, and they liked to use it to brew wine. The “Bewilderment Dew” in the quest reward was a very famous succubus specialty wine.

The bewilderment grass itself wasn’t addictive, but if consumed directly, it could create almost real illusions, reflecting the deepest desires of the consumer. And after the effect wore off, it would cause extremely intense pain. Usually, succubi wouldn’t choose to eat it directly.

Doni said Wilimina had been looking for bewilderment grass to consume to escape reality.

The bewilderment grass nearby was decreasing, which meant the queen was running further and further away—initially, she just slipped out for a few hours every few days. In the past two months, this queen began to stay out all night.

The magical protection of the succubus territory was still there, so the succubi were sure the queen was still alive.

But she indeed hadn’t come back for two months, so they also believed the queen was completely mad. For this tribe, this didn’t seem to be a rare occurrence.

They didn’t mention the female knight Malvina at all.

“Perhaps the succubi aren’t hiding it maliciously.” At the end, Solo carefully observed Nol’s face. “The queen and Malvina have been friends since childhood. Every time the queen disappeared before, it was Malvina who brought her back. This time… This time the queen has been missing for so long, they suspect Malvina is dead.”

“Well, so we might have to bring back two people,” Teest concluded. “Bewilderment grass is just their blind guess, and now the situation is even more uncertain.”

“We’re just scouting today. We’ll go back later, and everyone will inquire more,” Nol said.

Teest silently looked behind Nol. The fallen leaves were stepped on by Nol, leaving rows of small pits. They were truly “treading spots”.

Recently, his Lich husband’s temper had been unpredictable, becoming more and more like a real monster. Maybe tonight he should sacrifice his scalp again and let this guy touch it a bit?

…Actually, even though Nol was disorderly, his technique was quite good. He secretly enjoyed it and could also pretend to be doing him a favor.

The Mad Monk was planning cheerfully in his heart when suddenly a slight sound entered his ears.

That sound was very faint, like a gold wheel gently rolling over the fallen leaves.

Teest turned his head, and in the purple mist of the forest rolling in, he saw a glint of gold. A dirty gold wheel stood on a leaf that wasn’t far from where Teest stood silently, as if it were quietly watching him.

“Honey.” Teest’s voice strained, and the tail wrapped around Nol’s wrist tightened. “…Look over there.”

Nol looked in the direction Teest was pointing, but he only saw the gently swaying mist.

“There is nothing.” He asked vigilantly, “Did you see something?”

“Unfortunately, yes.”

In Teest’s eyes, the gold wheel gently bounced and rolled away. Seeing that Teest didn’t immediately follow, it even stopped, as if waiting for him. Teest drew out his “Betrayer”, and all the relaxation on his face disappeared.

“Don’t act rashly.” Nol immediately grabbed the tail on his wrist.

“Don’t worry. I know.” Teest turned around and smiled at Nol.

In these short seconds, the mist suddenly became extremely dense. Nol couldn’t see Teest’s face, even though they were only a step apart. Everything was becoming blurred. Teest’s figure was quickly engulfed by the mist. Distance and direction distorted, and something was stirring behind his remaining silhouette—

Nol stepped forward without hesitation. He followed the succubus’s tail and tightly hugged Teest’s waist.

It was a foolish decision, he knew.

…But he didn’t want to lose anything else while he could only watch.

The mist rolled endlessly and dissipated as quickly as it came. When that thick mist disappeared, only Anakin and Solo were left in the original position.

Teest and Nol had disappeared.

The author has something to say:

Nol: Try taking someone from me again! (Anger is about to be full again)

Teest: Actually, it feels quite comfortable when Nol touches my hair, but I won’t say it. ^-^

…This time the succubus’s tail has made a great contribution!

Opponents: Huh, how come these two people are linked together? What’s their relationship?

————————————

Shadow Wolf: So many people! (Stunned)

Poor wolf. Without five fingers, it can’t even properly count…

Chapter 52: Dream

“Save the succubus tribe?”

Anakin almost immediately refused. They did indeed feel pity for the succubi, just as they felt compassion for international friends trapped in war and famine when they were on Earth.

But they were just ordinary people with ordinary mindsets. Everyone was currently too busy taking care of themselves, so it was impossible to risk their lives for a foreign race.

Players couldn’t die, but most of them on Earth would complain even when drawing blood. The pain of death wasn’t a joke.

But as she was cautiously forming her words, a system prompt suddenly appeared.

The animation of its appearance was a bit odd, not flowing smoothly and accompanied by glitch-like flickers.

[You have triggered a hidden quest: One Question.]

[Normal Achievement: Leave the Dream Edge without any deaths.]

[Perfect Achievement: Leave the Dream Edge without any deaths; assist in saving the dying Succubus tribe.]

[Quest Reward: Massive experience [Normal]; Permanent increase of luck attribute by 20% [Perfect]; The goodwill of a certain existence [Perfect].]

[Rejection/Failure Penalty: None]

[Do you accept the quest?]

Such a weird quest. Anakin’s gaze stayed on the prompt.

Until now, the quests in “Tahe” seemed logical. Most of them were triggered by specific locations, items, or events. Some NPCs also issued quests, but their roles were clear—like shopkeepers asking for errands or Temple personnel commissioning monster kills. The logic was easy to understand.

However, this quest… was informal. It wasn’t an event they experienced firsthand, nor was the situation very serious. After just a mention of the current situation by Nol, it eagerly popped up.

Especially the part about “the goodwill of a certain existence”. It was really intriguing.

But Anakin hesitated only for a few seconds—a quest was still a quest. They should strive to leave alive, and there was experience to gain. Why not accept?

“Yes, yes, yes, those succubi are so pitiable.” Rogue Solo spoke first, his tone exceptionally righteous. “Unity is strength. I will definitely help with all my might!”

So obvious. Anakin rubbed her temples hard.

“I will also help. Do you need anything from us?” she added with a straight face.

“Not for now. Rest well. If there’s any update, we’ll consult you two.” Nol looked at the two Players suspiciously.

Both acted rationally, unlike passionate youths who disregarded life and death. Nol originally hoped the Players would believe him and not act recklessly. He never imagined they would volunteer to help.

And they even saw the two of them share a kiss, yet the Players never inquired about their relationship. Did he and Teest really look like “rare NPCs” to them?

Nol was baffled and decided to put this aside for now—he already had enough problems to deal with.

……

They got a very nice bedroom—or rather, Teest did.

Anakin and Solo had to settle for a deserted stone house in a remote location. Nol suspected that his proximity to the Succubus Palace was entirely due to the “succubus” Teest.

The room was equally magnificent.

It was spacious and clean, with a fluffy double bed in the center. Candles emitting sweet, fruity scents were lit by the bed. No matter how long they burned, the candle size didn’t diminish.

A row of large white-framed domed windows opened on the bedroom wall, overlooking a mesmerizing forest and sky. The gauzy curtains swayed gently in the breeze.

Teest sat on the bed, bouncing a bit on the soft bedding.

“No wonder these creatures that thrive on dreams have such high standards for their ‘dining plates’.” Teest pressed the cloud-like mattress, happily lying down.

Nol, however, stood by the window, looking out into the boundless dream world.

The more beautiful it seemed here, the colder his heart felt. In this dreamy scene, there should have been a pair of lovers—at least, that was their woven fate, or so it should have been.

Nol pressed his palm against the crystal-like glass, silently gazing at this world. Except for the impending destruction, everything was perfect.

Suddenly, a pair of hands reached out, covering his eyes from behind. The despairing world vanished instantly, and all he saw was darkness.

“Stop looking. It’s time for you to rest, my queen,” Teest whispered. “Or would you prefer the title ‘my beloved husband’? Act natural. Those succubi are definitely spying on us. I think you know.”

Nol could indeed guess. He was just… a bit weary, too tired to fuss over it.

“I need a real hug now,” Nol said, feeling the hands covering his eyes.

Teest chuckled. “How about a bonus tail wrap? I’m quite generous.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. But I sincerely ask you, don’t touch the tail too much—the tip of a succubus’s tail is very sensitive.”

In bed, Nol hugged Teest tightly from behind, burying his face in his back. Teest’s tail brushed against his arm, its tip softly resting on Nol’s waist, like a hug.

The bedding of the succubi was truly top-notch. Despite his worries, Nol fell asleep quickly.

When he opened his eyes, the bedroom was slightly dimmer than before. At some point, Teest had turned to face him. Teest was in deep sleep, lips slightly parted. His long silver hair was spread across the pillow, tickling Nol’s cheek.

In the dim light, Teest’s presence seemed even more pronounced.

The Mad Monk, while deep in sleep, looked completely “harmless”. Even from such close proximity, Nol couldn’t find a single flaw in his appearance.

For a rare moment, Nol let his mind wander, staring at the face so close to him, as if glued to Teest. The other’s skin was warm and soft, and Nol’s hands, which were wrapped around Teest’s waist, involuntarily tightened. Despite Teest’s eyes being closed, Nol felt a strange sense of… enchantment.

The moment he realized it, a chill ran down Nol’s spine.

Something’s wrong.

Everything was too relaxed. The atmosphere was too intimate, as if someone was deliberately manipulating it. Nol glanced out of the window and then looked down at his own bare body with a wry smile.

This was a dream.

The details of the forest outside the window were slightly different from what he remembered before going to sleep. Also, before they went to bed, both he and Teest had undoubtedly been fully dressed. He was so dazed that he didn’t even notice this.

Luckily, as a Lich with a higher mental resistance and a Player with even stronger mental defenses, Nol was only confused for less than thirty seconds.

“Don’t you like me?”

A familiar voice whispered in his ear.

“The real world is too heavy. You need comfort, stronger than just ‘a kiss’.” The illusion spoke in Teest’s voice. “Why don’t you look at me?”

“I don’t like men.” Nol released the illusion.

“You’re lying, Mr. Mage.” The illusion wearing Teest’s face smiled mischievously, just like the real Teest. The succubus tail playfully circled around Nol’s lower back.

Nol buried half of his face in the pillow, laying almost calmly.

He knew what was going on. To retain the characteristics of the succubi while passing the game’s regulations, their magic had been thoroughly revised, and Nol remembered all the details.

The succubi manipulated dreams, making the target dream of the person they were most interested in. They then guided the target to complete the illusion, making them lost in a vivid dream…

Once this passionate dream ended, the succubi could harvest the corresponding life force.

However, out of consideration for privacy and courtesy, the succubus casting the spell didn’t watch the whole process.

“I regret that I don’t have the energy to indulge in those kind of fantasies,” Nol whispered, even though he knew the succubi couldn’t hear him. He looked beyond the illusion.

Of course, Nol also knew why his subconscious accused him of “lying”.

The entity speaking to him wasn’t the “illusion of Teest”, but a projection of his own subconscious. One couldn’t lie to oneself.

“I admit that the succubi might not have chosen the wrong person… At this moment, in this world, I do need him the most.”

Nol finally reached out and touched the top of Teest’s head. He had never done this to the real Teest, suspecting the Mad Monk wouldn’t like it. Just as he imagined, Teest’s hair was soft and warm under his touch.

The illusion smiled, lying silently, allowing Nol to caress it.

The room was quiet, with only the faint sounds of their breathing. Nol stroked Teest’s hair repeatedly, the hair sliding through his fingers like warm water. The sound of the hair rubbing against his skin was soft, like the rustling of silk.

Thinking that the real Teest was beside him, Nol surprisingly felt a bit calmer.

Reality was indeed heavy, and Teest might not sincerely help. But… having someone “by your side” and being “all alone” indeed were different.

When the scent of hair clung to his hands, Nol closed his eyes and hugged the illusion once more.

He was thankful for the little tricks of the succubi. Judging by the outcome, he indeed felt much more relaxed.

The poor succubi. They were destined not to extract life force from him—how could one possibly extract life force from a purely undead being?

Perhaps the heavens sensed the grudge of the succubi. When Nol really opened his eyes, he realized something was amiss.

Teest lay opposite him; his usually smooth hair was now a mess. The look he gave Nol was complex, with a hint of accusation in his eyes.

Nol subconsciously raised his hand and sniffed it. As expected, he smelled the faint scent of Teest’s hair on his palm.

Nol: “……”

Nol: “…Last night… I…”

“You woke me up by pulling my hair last night,” Teest said with a hint of melancholy. “Did you have a strange dream? Were you shearing sheep?”

Nol averted his gaze.

Teest sized him up and hummed meaningfully. “Alright, no jokes. It’s easy to guess. Those starving succubi must have wanted to get something out of you, the ‘human’. I won’t ask whom you dreamt of, but… you have a thing for hair? It’s quite a unique fetish. Fortunately, it wasn’t too noticeable.”

Suppressing a myriad of thoughts, Nol pondered for a few seconds and then just nodded heavily.

The succubi had no food, so naturally, there was no breakfast. Only a morning court assembly.

Both Teest and Nol were given chairs. The two Players were still not allowed into the court and had to wait in the hall outside.

The boundary between day and night was unclear here. Even the definition of “morning” was determined by the state of the hourglass beside the throne.

The beautiful throne remained empty, with no sign of the queen named “Wilimina”. Nol looked at the vacant throne, resisting the urge to sigh.

“Last night, I felt violated.”

Teest was the first to speak among all the succubi, his tone solemn and sad. “I know you all are hungry, but how could you not even greet before preying on my lover?”

The room went silent.

“… Allow me to explain, Mr. Teest.”

The male succubus named Adonis—or Doni for short*—stood up. He wandered up to Teest and Nol and bowed with difficulty.

*Adonis (阿多尼斯). Doni (多尼). Generally, nicknames are given when the names of the characters (especially westernized) are too long.

Teest looked at him with a hurt expression, while Nol tried to mimic an offended look.

“We all know it was rude… Just like other groups, we wouldn’t touch a comrade’s lover. We are truly sorry, but the children are too hungry.”

Nol’s “offended look” almost faltered. “What?”

“You might not know,” Doni said, looking down. “The longer the lifespan of an immortal species, the harder it is to reproduce and the more precious the offspring. Since… Since we’ve been trapped here, no children have been born for many years. Children need a lot of life force to grow… We forcibly put the few remaining children to sleep, but they still need life force to sustain basic consumption.”

Speaking of this, he lowered his head even more. “If we told you outright, it would be like kidnapping the two of you to help. We thought just once—just once—and they could last a few more months. Maybe you wouldn’t notice, and we’d find another way by then…”

Dumbstruck, Nol gripped Teest’s hand and feigned ignorance. “I heard that succubi occasionally go out to hunt, and there are humans in your dungeons. Why not choose more prey?”

Doni seemed uneasy. He glanced at Teest, then quickly looked away. The other succubi remained silent, with only a few sighs echoing in the large space.

“I’m curious too.” Teest took the opportunity to question, clear and loud.

“…Because we can’t,” Doni answered bitterly after a moment. “When the Great Queen Hyacinth was alive, we could hunt normally. But afterward… many of our kin who ventured to the Dream Edge realm never returned. At first, two or three out of ten would disappear. Then that number rose to five or six. In the past twenty years, not one who went out ‘hunting’ has returned.”

“Hyacinth died over 150 years ago,” Nol said, trying to remain calm. “After 150 years, you should know the reason. Who is your enemy? Where are they?”

Perhaps sensing a hint of malice in his tone, Doni finally looked at Nol.

He let out a raspy, unpleasant laugh, then slowly shook his head.

“We only know the enemy is the Eternal Church,” he said slowly. “As for what methods they used… we don’t know. Really, we don’t. Every succubus who encountered them disappeared. Not one has returned with any clues in over 150 years.”

Nol silently gripped the armrest of his chair.

“The humans in the dungeons are invaders from the Eternal Church. If it wasn’t for them, we would have starved to death decades ago,” Doni continued. “You might think we’re incompetent, but apart from the tribes in the Shiva Realm, succubi from other countries were nearly wiped out. Even living this pitifully, we’ve lasted the longest…”

[Perhaps the invaders from the Eternal Church are being used as “food”,] Teest thought. [If the extermination continues, the species will become extinct, so why not just domesticate them and weaken their spirit—that’s probably what the people from the Eternal Church are thinking.]

[Then they dream more than the succubi,] Nol responded coldly.

[Haha!] Teest laughed unreservedly in his mind. [I’m growing fonder of your sense of humor, Mr. Lich.]

“I won’t provide life force for those children.” Nol hissed at the succubus Doni. “If you want to save them, go find your own food.”

Doni looked at Nol with an expected “sure enough” expression, his dim eyes showing no anger. “We were at fault first. We understand…”

“But I don’t.” Nol’s voice softened. He stood up and walked to Doni. “If it were my children I wanted to save, I would do anything for them. Dignity, honor, I’d throw them all away—if your manners prevent you from questioning me or rebuking me, then why don’t you plead with me?”

The queen was nowhere to be found, the children were dying, and their race was on the verge of extinction. The succubi lived methodically while slowly starving to death, calmly choosing the next heir, as if the world were still normal.

Was he crazy, or were they?

Doni lifted his dry eyes, looking at Nol with a gaze as lifeless as a true corpse. He said nothing.

Instead, Teest raised an eyebrow in surprise, looking at Nol’s straight back.

“Say it.” Nol stared deep into his eyes. “Say you want to survive.”

Doni stretched his mouth into an indecipherable smile on his mummified face.

“As I said before, I’m in charge of Lord Teest in the heir selection.” He politely changed the topic, took a few steps back, and bowed respectfully to Teest. “The contents of the heir selection have been decided.”

“Whoever successfully brings back the maddened queen will be the next heir.”

Chapter 51: Heir Selection

[You have entered a hidden area.]

[You have triggered a hidden quest: Life or Death.]

[Normal achievement: Leave the Dream Edge without dying during the process.]

[Perfect achievement: Leave the Dream Edge without dying during the process; rescue the dying succubus tribe.]

[Quest rewards: Massive experience points [Normal]; Bewilderment dew [Normal]; Reputation with the succubus tribe [Perfect]; Immunity to mental magic [Perfect].]

[Rejection/Failure Penalty: Level reduction by 10.]

[Do you accept the quest?]

Before the succubi could speak, the system message slapped onto Nol’s face.

…Even refusing the quest would result in a penalty. Clearly, they must accept it.

Beside him, there was a slight movement from Teest, who probably received a similar quest.

Their quest was clearly different from the Players’, with no mention of “helping the Succubus Queen with her troubles” and no rewards involving “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This must be a special version triggered only upon arriving at the palace, and undoubtedly, it was generated by AI.

[Just escaping from the dream would complete the quest. This place must be very dangerous.]

Teest’s thoughts echoed. [Is life always this exciting by your side? I admire you, honey.]

Nol wasn’t sure if Teest was sincere or just being sarcastic, but Teest sounded genuinely cheerful.

They stopped in the center of the grand hall. Light from an unknown source shone through the stained glass, casting dreamy colors all around. The chairs on both sides of the throne were filled with succubi, each more withered than the last. At a glance, this place looked more like a carefully designed tomb than a beautiful palace.

The male succubus who had led them turned around and straightened his white robe—

The same robe, when worn by Teest, looked enticing. But on this living skeleton, it looked like a freshly washed burial shroud. The tail of the succubus hung limp, devoid of any luster, resembling a tie on a shroud.

“You claim to want to help us and have shown enough sincerity.” He spoke with a raspy voice. “We have come to an agreement—please participate in our prince selection. If you qualify, you can meet the queen. But if you don’t, please leave with those humans immediately.”

“Alright,” Teest replied succinctly.

…What?

Nol looked at Teest in shock.

[This is the prince selection of the succubus tribe!] he conveyed to Teest. [Do you even know how it works? Each tribe has its own rules, and they’re all troublesome.]

[You even have to sign a magical agreement beforehand, and if you violate it, there’s a huge penalty—]

[But it sounds so fun! After all, only I need to sign. It won’t affect any of you,] Teest thought cheerfully. [Maybe you can even become the succubus queen? King consort? …Such a rare experience!]

‘It’s really not a time to be joking around,’ Nol internally grumbled.

The succubus throne wasn’t hereditary. They tend to select the strongest from within the tribe. But what constituted “the strongest” varied: the smartest, the best at collecting life force, the most popular, and so on. Even within the same tribe, the criteria for each selection might differ.

For a regular Player, the smartest move would be to support a candidate rather than trying to become one.

Yet, Mr. Mad Monk seemed quite interested—

“What should I do?” Teest asked calmly.

The male succubus managed a smile and pulled a piece of paper from his pocket.

This tribe was clearly struggling. They didn’t even have magical ink as the contract was written in blood.

Nol frowned. This wasn’t a system contract, and thus wouldn’t be affected by Teest’s “God’s Forsaken” curse. The paper radiated strong dark magic, and the consequences of violating the contract were evident.

Teest quickly read the contract.

Its requirements were straightforward. The signer must actively participate in the Black Forest Tribe’s “Crown Prince Selection”, not act passively or quit halfway, not use unfair means to win, and not harm any succubus of the Black Forest Tribe.

If chosen as the crown prince, the signer must ascend to the throne after Queen Wilimina abdicates and protects the tribe. The violator would have to pay with their eyes, tongue, and all limbs.

Just the thought of it caused Nol’s tongue to ache. [Don’t sign it.]

Just because the succubi were in a bad state didn’t mean one should act recklessly. Especially the clause about “not harming any succubus” was too restrictive. What if Teest was attacked by a malicious succubus? He wouldn’t even be able to defend himself.

“I can’t accept this.” Teest waved the contract at the succubus. “It doesn’t specify how my companions will be treated. I also need to protect my lover and friends.”

“We understand. We’ll add that,” the male succubus replied promptly.

“That’s still not enough.” Teest smiled. “Even though I want to help, I’m not going to blindly commit… Let’s compromise. If I’m really chosen and the current queen can still rule for more than two months, you have to let me go. If her condition is very bad, I’ll take on the responsibility.”

Nol’s relief was short-lived—

Teest was serious.

What on earth was he thinking? Even if he wanted to gather information, this wasn’t the way to go about it. Nol didn’t have the time to become, well, the king consort of the succubi.

The male succubus looked down briefly, showing a fleeting sadness, and then quickly agreed. “We can accept those terms on behalf of the tribe.”

As if afraid Teest would change his mind, the succubus immediately cut his palm, allowing the blood droplets to form the words on the paper.

‘Oh no,’ Nol thought. ‘It seems Queen Wilimina’s days are numbered.’

The so-called “troubles” that Players needed to solve might be synonymous with “last wishes”. Who knew how heavy that task would be.

Without hesitation, Teest picked up the pen and signed “Teest”. The moment the pen was lifted, the blood turned back into droplets, wrapping around Teest’s wrist, forming tattoo-like red patterns.

Only faint gray letters remained on the paper. The succubus frowned at the signature. “Teest? Just now, your companion called you ‘Landus’.”

“Oh, sometimes he also calls me ‘Mr. Knight’, ‘Lunatic’, and ‘Slow Down’. Should all these be written down?” Teest innocently shook his pen.

Nol: “.…..”

I didn’t—I never—I only called him by the first one…

Of course, what was done was done, so he wisely remained silent.

“It’s not necessary. The contract is already in effect. You can retrieve your belongings. Those two humans…” The male succubus hesitated for a moment and continued with some difficulty, “We’ll release those two humans. You’re in charge of watching over them. Remember, you cannot harm any succubus in the tribe. If you direct them to do evil, it’s also within the contract.”

“I understand.” Teest rubbed the blood mark on his wrist and answered with a smile.

A hint of softness finally appeared on the male succubus’s face. “Welcome, brethren. I am Adonis. From today, I am in charge of your ‘Crown Prince Selection’. There has been a lot happening today. I think the two of you should rest.”

Although his words were polite, his gaze never once landed on Nol.

……

“Look, honey, we’re completely free!” Teest stretched lazily in the fragrant breeze. “You can retrieve that noisy candle, and the two Players might be released from prison. And me—I might even have the opportunity to become the king of the succubi. Perfect.”

“Really? Are you sure your eyes, tongue, and limbs feel the same way?” Nol ominously said. “Once you break the contract, the blood mark will instantly dig out your eyeballs and tongue and sever your limbs. With such deadly restraint, I have to act as your knight in return.”

“What are you worried about? I’m definitely going to breach the contract.” Teest looked at Nol in confusion. “The succubi are so cute in their stupidity. Those injuries aren’t fatal at all. Can’t you just heal me?”

Nol stopped. “No.”

“I thought you liked my eyes and limbs… Are you going to abandon me?” Teest said pitifully.

“Not really.” Nol stared at the swaying succubus tail. “But if you always treat things like this as a joke, who knows.”

Teest’s tail stopped swaying and drooped dejectedly. Nol grabbed it.

“Let’s go.” Nol sighed. “We still need to explain to the Players.”

If he had to find a silver lining in this farce… the drama caused by Teest’s sudden antics somewhat dulled his own rage against reality.

Meanwhile, in the dungeon.

There were no succubus guards inside the dungeon, so the two Players had a brief tour. Rogue Solo picked the locks, while Anakin used an illusion to hide. The two sneaked out of the cell and inspected the human-filled prisons one by one.

The succubi were meticulous. Even though the humans were paralyzed on the ground, barely breathing, there were no traces of rotten food or excrement smell in the cell. Maybe it was the peculiar environment of the dream? The Players weren’t sure.

All they could be certain of was that these people wouldn’t live past this year.

The prisoners lay haphazardly, with bones poking through their saggy skin. Among the prisoners were both men and women, mostly in their prime. Their eyes were shut, with only faint chest movements indicating life. Anakin selected one in the best condition and discreetly released a recovery spell.

Under the soft glow, the emaciated man slowly opened his eyes. His eyeballs looked carved from wood, the pupils dilated, completely void of any sparkle.

He half-laid on the ground, staring blankly at Anakin, lips moving incessantly. Anakin leaned closer and felt even the man’s breath was eerily cold.

“Ma… y…”

“Take your time. Don’t rush,” Anakin whispered comfortingly.

“May… everything be eternal…”

Anakin jerked back, staring at the man in shock. His facial muscles twitched, pulling into a disturbing smile.

“Everything… Everything for… the Eternal Son…” he murmured, moving his hand to his rib-exposed chest, trying to form a circle.

Solo’s face showed undisguised disgust. He waved at Anakin. “Sister, I got this.”

He approached, pulling a tightly sealed glass vial from his pocket. The thick liquid inside glowed a fluorescent blue.

“That one?” Anakin realized.

“Yes, that one.” Solo replied. “What was it called… The Hogwarts special gloomy blue DND-flavored truth serum for living humans. Don’t make me say that guy’s name, the damned alchemist you’re thinking of*.”

*Referencing the Veritaserum. I’m not sure who he’s referencing, but it’s most likely Severus Snape.

“Got it—the drug that lets you ask five questions.” Anakin summarized.

While the two chatted, the man was already under the effect. He became eerily still, like a statue. Solo took a few deep breaths and cleared his throat.

“Other than the two of us, is everyone else here a follower of the Eternal Church?” The Rogue asked seriously.

“Yes, yes.” The man’s eyes half-closed, his gaze scattered. “We came for a great mission… for the Eternal Son… How dare these vile creatures imprison us as food… They will invoke the wrath of God…”

“How did the Eternal Church push the succubi to this state?” Solo ignored the man’s rambling.

“We were just capturing,” the man answered blankly. “Just capturing, capturing…”

“Damn, his head isn’t clear. Wasted a question.” Anakin clicked her tongue. “Ask about the quest. Let’s finish this quickly.”

Rogue Solo nodded understandingly. “Regarding the current succubus queen, what do you know?”

“She’s called-she’s called Wilimina. She ascended the throne less than twenty years ago. Hehe… hehe. The ruler of the succubi, each generation lives shorter lives… She won’t live much longer, not much longer…” His tone was oddly moist, making it hard to determine whether it was a curse or a statement. “She’s dying… She’s going to die… First, she’ll go mad, then she’ll die… Ah, divine punishment! Divine punishment!”

Anakin’s expression became somewhat rigid. She directly asked, “Do you know of her troubles or desires?”

“Who can understand the thoughts of a monster? …When you’re eating lamb chops, do you understand the worries of the lamb?” The man coughed twice and chuckled, trying to catch his breath.

“We have only one chance left.” Solo scratched his head. “I only have one bottle of truth serum. We have to choose the next question carefully.”

Up to now, besides knowing that the “Eternal Church is causing trouble”, they hadn’t obtained any effective information. If it weren’t for the strong side effects of this thing, it would actually be more appropriate to give it to the succubus.

Anakin pressed her lips together, pondering for a while. About half a minute later, she stepped forward, grabbed the man’s hair, and forced him to lift his head.

“Listen well, scum.” Her voice was clear and cold. “I guess you captured the succubi in order to create a ‘Supplement Demon’.”

The Supplement Demon was a terrible creature brought into existence by the Eternal Church alone.

It was said that the Eternal Church possessed a method that could strip away a certain “power” from the bodies of dead creatures—perhaps calling it “attributes” or “skills” would be more apt—to bestow upon its key members.

However, this method had significant limitations, and the process was extremely painful. It was like forcibly transplanting foreign organs onto a human. Those who were “supplementally enhanced” either died on the spot or manifested incurable deformities.

Those who managed to survive were referred to as “Supplement Demons” by the outside world. This wasn’t just a derogatory term. The Temple of Life had confirmed that, on a physiological level, these things were no longer human…

As far as Anakin knew, using “human corpses” to enhance the “human” attributes was the gentlest process, with the highest survival rate for those being enhanced. Even so, the enhanced individuals would transform into bizarre and terrifying “Supplement Demons”, who could only mimic humans through external forces…

“But after all these years, you’re still capturing these otherworldly succubi,” Anakin continued. “Have you mastered a method to handle the monsters, or…?”

“It began as… experiments. But recently, there have been… successful cases.”

The man chuckled, his breathing becoming even more rapid.

“We need those proficient in mental magic… If the experiment succeeds once, it can succeed a second time… God is watching us… God is blessing us…”

“Fuck your ancestors!” Rogue Solo cursed. “Human experimentation? What kind of perverse crap is this? Your god can go eat shit!”

The Eternalist suddenly became silent. He lifted his tree-branch-like neck, staring in Solo’s direction.

“Those chosen by God will surely not die because of this. Those abandoned by God have no value in this world.”

His eyes gradually widened, emitting a frightening light. “It’s only logical that those who are dead and useless should reflect…”

Bang—!

Just as the follower of the Eternal Church was about to continue, Anakin punched him in the head. Already incredibly weak, he couldn’t withstand the Player’s powerful punch.

He twitched as he fell to the ground and soon was silent.

“It seems you are also one of the ‘useless ones’ ‘abandoned by God’,” Anakin said after a few seconds, her voice hoarse.

“Sister, you…”

“Don’t tell me you wanted to keep him alive,” Anakin said. “Anyway, now we indeed know something.”

“No, you…”

“Enough.” Anakin stretched out her hand, covering her slightly trembling fist. “I’m fine. It’s not the first time. Did you think being a Saint of the Temple was a game? At least I can comfort myself knowing that those I’ve killed are scum.”

Solo remained silent.

After a while, he sighed and gently embraced his kin.

“Let’s go back,” he said. “You’re right. You just killed a bug. He’s an invader without humanity. He doesn’t deserve to be called human.”

Anakin tugged at the corner of her mouth but didn’t speak.

The heavy atmosphere dissipated when they saw the two brothers… No, the two lovers. The “younger brother” was tightly holding the “older brother’s” tail, and the “older brother” seemed a bit downcast. The atmosphere between the two was indescribably delicate.

“I have bad news, bad news, and more bad news. Which one do you want to hear?” Nol said.

“Is there a difference?” Solo replied shakily.

“The first bad news: this guy wants to run for the title of Succubus Crown Prince. Of course, if he succeeds, we might be able to meet the queen, but we’ll have to stay here to inherit the throne.”

Nol said with a smirk, “Coincidentally, none of us plans to stay.”

Solo grunted. “That’s kind of half good news. At least we can meet the queen.”

Although this approach is a bit… outrageous.

“The second bad news,” Nol continued coldly. “We don’t know where the queen is, and she can only live for another two months. You’d better start praying that her wish list isn’t too long.”

Anakin and Solo: “…”

Anakin: “If it doesn’t work out, we can go back and check again in two months.”

Perhaps the quest could be refreshed.

“The third bad news. The Dream Edge is dangerous. If we act recklessly, we may be in danger.”

Nol rubbed his face.

“We need to make the current situation clear because, next, we want to save this tribe.”

Chapter 50: An Unexpected Kiss

The dreamy Black Forest was devoid of its usual gloom. A light blue mist floated among the branches, and the leaves glittered like jewels.

Nol wasn’t in the mood to appreciate this beauty. His thoughts were still fixated on the words of Rogue Solo—

They all died more than a hundred and fifty years ago.

It was likely that Decoste died of old age. However, for the succubus queen Hyacinth, her death was tragically premature.

Nol still remembered the time they were creating the backstory for these two characters. There was no AI assistance in this task, and his colleagues were genuinely excited. After the story was outlined, they all excitedly shared their input, even discussing it during lunch breaks.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was just a sidequest, but the team added countless adorable details to it. From the childhood experiences and habits of the two NPCs to the weather of the Black Forest when they first fell in love, everyone gave it their all. Even the art team put extra effort into the models.

Beautiful Hyacinth and handsome Decoste. They were lovers separated by the chasm of lifespan. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, they had a unique and genuinely happy relationship. They felt like children personally nurtured by the production team or like old friends they had known for years.

But they died over a hundred years ago.

What shocked Nol most was that Hyacinth committed suicide—by design, Queen Hyacinth was a strong and rational woman. Even if Decoste betrayed her countless times, she would never abandon her life.

Nol couldn’t understand. His good mood disappeared instantly, leaving only confusion and sadness.

“…Why?” he murmured.

“Why what?”

Rogue Solo scratched his face. “Why did they break up? Or why did the queen commit suicide? Haa, I don’t know about that.”

Nol looked at him sorrowfully.

Feeling uneasy, Solo continued, “I’m told the records were collected by Decoste’s descendants. To them, Queen Hyacinth wasn’t only their father’s ex-wife but also a real monster.”

“According to the records, after Decoste broke up with the queen, he never talked about her again. How could his heirs know much inside information?”

“The news of the succubus queen’s suicide was big. The Temple of Life is still researching the case… Succubi have always symbolized intimacy and pleasure. ‘Suicide’ fundamentally goes against their nature,” Anakin added.

Solo curled his lips and remarked, “It definitely wasn’t for love. They hadn’t spoken in decades by the time Decoste died. The queen only killed herself years after his death.”

“I see,” Nol replied hesitantly. “Anyway, the queen we’re helping this time isn’t Hyacinth. Do you have information about the new queen?”

Anakin shook her head helplessly.

Teest didn’t seem to take it seriously. “Guess we’ll have to try our luck.”

His “Betrayer” badge was fastened to a belt around his waist, concealed by a loose-fitting white cloth, making it especially hard to detect. Now, dressed in a revealing succubus-style outfit, large patches of his skin were exposed, and there didn’t appear to be any baggage on him, making him look pure and harmless.

Nol stepped forward, moving beside Teest. A warm succubus tail emerged from beneath the cloth, gently wrapping around Nol’s wrist.

[It seems you need a hug,] Teest thought. [Now might not be the best time, so let this be a substitute.]

Nol managed a weak smile. At times like these, Teest didn’t seem like the legendary murderous lunatic at all. Knowing this was likely one of Teest’s tricks to make him more reliant, Nol still indulged in the comfort.

He gently pinched the thick tip of Teest’s tail. The tail stiffened slightly before playfully scratching his palm in return.

……

The four of them wandered around the Black Forest in their dreams. The fallen leaves on the ground were softly colored and looked like clouds when stepped on. But after wandering for most of the night, everyone was experiencing aesthetic fatigue.

“Aren’t succubi supposed to build their nests on the edge of the forest? Where’s the promised edge?”

Anakin pounded her own legs, too lazy to maintain her dignified and holy image, and simply sat down under a tree.

Nol: “My information is a bit outdated. I’m sorry.”

“No, no, no, it’s not your fault,” Anakin hastily said. “The succubi have been isolated for so many years. Who knows what they’ve been up to secretly.”

“It feels like we’ve been going in circles, but I can’t find the markers I made.” Rogue Solo was scratching the nearby tree bark with his eyebrows furrowed.

Teest was sitting gracefully under a tree. “I think we indeed have been moving in circles, and I feel like we’re being watched.”

“Huh? Aren’t you a swordsman?” Solo gasped. “Can swordsmen sense this?”

“I was born with keen intuition.” Teest smiled. “Personal advice, if you want to continue peacefully, it’s better for us to just let them observe. Of course, if you two want to forcefully take the ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ from the succubi…”

“No way! We’re not like those lunatics from the Eternal Church. I’m just a little worried,” Solo quickly interjected.

“If the succubi are no longer friendly towards humans, my brother and I swear to protect both of you,” Nol said.

He too sensed the presence of the succubi not far away. Strangely, the aura of the succubi was much weaker than expected, indicating they were in poor condition. That being said, even if the succubus queen Hyacinth herself came, he and Teest could still ensure the safety of the two Players.

“However, if you two change your minds, you can leave here,” Nol added.

Anakin shook her head, her expression turning serious. “Let’s just stay like this. Don’t act and let’s just see what they want to do.”

And so they walked on and off for most of the day. The sky at the Dream Edge seemed never to change, and by Nol’s rough estimate, they had been “lost” until noon the next day.

Finally, the succubi who had been following them revealed themselves.

Not just one succubus appeared—during their wanderings, nearly twenty succubi quietly approached from all directions, forming a tight encirclement.

They resembled humans. The front row held whips, shields, or spears, while the back row set up bows and arrows, and several magic wands pointed at the four from all sides.

Unfortunately, their appearance undermined the imposing nature of the encirclement.

The surrounding succubi, both male and female, were all emaciated with protruding bones. Their features were very delicate, and their bone structures were perfect. But their dried-out skin made even the most beautiful features look terrifying.

…Starving people.

The words unexpectedly popped into Nol’s mind.

But how could this be? Even if the succubi were isolated, they shouldn’t have become like this. Nol looked into the beautiful eyes of the succubi, which should have been full of joy but now only held caution and numbness.

“State your purpose,” the nearest male succubus said sternly, his sword point almost touching Teest’s nose.

“I came to visit you all.” Teest looked both innocent and surprised. “These humans are my companions, and we’re on an adventure… I heard there were others of my kind here, so I came to check. If we did something wrong, I apologize first.”

You?” The succubus’ emaciated face showed deep sarcasm. “With that appearance, out in the open? Impossible!”

He gripped his sword tighter, not lowering its point.

“I certainly have my ways of disguise! But to avoid the Eternal Church, it’s easier for me alone than a group,” Teest added with a hint of anger in his voice. “I was born in the Shiva Realm. I just came to visit my kind here! Of course, assuming you’re aware of the situation in the Shiva Realm.”

The sword-wielding succubus hesitated. “How can you prove—”

Before he could finish, his face stiffened, and his sword fell to the ground. He reached out to Teest as if enchanted. Nol looked over, and indeed, Teest’s golden eyes were shimmering.

The succubus’ innate ability [Charm] was astoundingly effective. Even if Players could disguise themselves as a succubus, they couldn’t use Charm.

[Charm] strictly followed the principle of “might makes right”. Apparently, Kando wasn’t lying. Teest’s skills were indeed stronger than the average succubus. Of course, the opponent’s poor condition might also be a factor.

“Enough!” A female succubus behind Teest shouted. “We recognize your identity—take your humans and leave immediately. Outsiders are not welcome here.”

Teest obediently closed his eyes and bowed slightly. “I want to see your queen.”

A murmur of whispers erupted. The succubi huddled together, and the atmosphere of suspicion thickened.

“I have no other intention. I just can’t bear to see my kind suffer. As a representative from the Shiva Realm, I want to know if I can help… You all must know, at this rate, you won’t last much longer!” Teest’s sincerity was palpable, as if he truly was a saint. Even Nol felt touched.

“Yes, Landus is my most important companion, and I don’t want to see his kind suffer either.” Nol recalled Teest’s pseudonym and joined the conversation.

The male succubus, having just recovered from Charm, sneered at Nol’s statement. “Really? If you’re willing to wear magic-restricting chains and come with us, we might believe your sincerity.”

He emphasized every word, dripping with hostility.

“I’m willing,” Nol replied without hesitation, even offering his wrist before Teest.

The two Players behind him exchanged glances and also extended their hands. Finally, Teest, with an exaggerated sigh, extended his arms.

His arms were perfectly shaped, in stark contrast to the dried arms of the succubus putting the shackles on him.

…What had these succubi been through in the past two hundred years?

……

A few minutes later, Nol understood why they couldn’t find the entrance. On the Dream Edge, the succubi created another dream within a dream, hiding the entrance inside it.

One of the succubi slit her wrist and smeared a layer of fresh blood on the eyelids of the four, allowing them to enter this hidden area.

Ordinary succubi definitely didn’t possess such a level of power; Nol was quite certain of that.

Such tactics were reminiscent of the style of the succubus queen Hyacinth. As for the power to maintain these illusions… it was likely that the succubi borrowed external forces through other means.

However, Nol had no chance to investigate further. The group of succubi imprisoned them in a separate dungeon directly, without Nol ever seeing their real stronghold.

A dungeon in a dream was still a dungeon. The surroundings here were far from dreamy. The damp air and the moldy smell of straw felt very real. The dungeon of the succubi was near an endless corridor, very dim, with a visibility of no more than five meters. From the depths of the darkness, faint moans could occasionally be heard. Nol could sense the presence of humans and… human skeletons.

It was hard to say whether the human presence or the succubi’s was weaker. They were equally on the edge of life and death.

The decaying prison door creaked shut, and the four were confined in the same cell.

“So, can I ask what’s the deal with the Eternal Church and the Shiva Realm?” Solo whispered. “Now it’s your turn to share some details.”

“You don’t seem worried at all,” Teest remarked.

“Think about my skills. These shackles are no problem,” Rogue Solo whispered even more quietly. “We’re playing the whole act, right? You start.”

Nol looked at Teest curiously. He apparently knew more about the succubi than anyone else here, having likely encountered the succubus group while acquiring his skills.

“The Eternal Church has always been hunting succubi. The Shiva Realm is where the Eternal Church’s power is weakest, and it’s the only public settlement of the remaining succubi,” Teest succinctly summarized.

“Ah, those Eternalists even offend succubi? Makes sense, they’re the type to kick every dog they see on the side of the road,” Solo lamented. “The world is getting worse and worse…”

Anakin frowned in silence, lost in thought.

“Why are they capturing succubi?” Nol inquired.

Instead of answering, Teest tilted his head, signaling something. Nol then felt the presence of a succubus.

“Because floating feather birds have valuable feathers, silver unicorns have rare horns, and we have enchanting spiritual magic… They want everything. Humans always want everything,” a hoarse voice responded.

The newcomer was none other than the male succubus who had earlier threatened Teest with a sword. Holding a lantern that illuminated only himself, he approached in an eerie manner. He stopped outside the cell, lifting his lantern to illuminate his skeletal face, creating a spooky and icy atmosphere.

“With ‘Infatuation’, we can get everything, from secrets that can’t be pried out to information that can’t be extracted through torture,” the succubus coldly said. “You all don’t know this? And you claim to be comrades of the succubi.”

“That’s because they’re all pure-hearted people,” Teest softly replied. “Dear brethren, are you here to set us free?”

“We have questions for you alone,” the indifferent succubus stated. “These humans will stay here. You come with us.”

“No! I’m going with him,” Nol blurted out.

The prison might be somewhat safe, and these shackles wouldn’t confine Players. But if Teest was taken away alone, there was no telling what would happen to him.

The succubus sneered, “You don’t have the right—”

“He’s my husband, so he certainly has the right,” Teest interrupted. “We made vows before the Goddess of Life. Only death can separate us.”

Anakin and Solo were stunned. While Anakin was somewhat calmer, Solo nearly gasped out loud.

“Lies.”

“If you don’t believe us, look at the necklaces we wear,” Teest continued in his gentle tone, playing the role of a harmless, affable succubus. “We wear matching wedding rings, see?”

The succubus, half-doubting, pulled out their necklaces and saw the rings. His expression turned complicated. Nol felt the shock from the two Players, their intense gazes piercing through the darkness.

“This could mean something else,” the succubus finally said after a pause. If it weren’t for Anakin nudging Solo in time, Solo might’ve agreed.

‘There’s no other way,’ Nol thought to himself. They shouldn’t be wasting time on such trivial matters. It was dim here anyway, so why not let a modern person like himself take charge?

He tilted his body, getting close to Teest’s face.

Just a second before their lips met, Nol turned his head, trying to deceive the succubus by pretending to kiss. However, his “legal husband” seemed to have the same idea.

The two shifted towards each other simultaneously, and their lips met firmly in a genuine kiss.

Nol: “.…..”

Teest: “.…..”

Nol’s mind was almost blank.

My first kiss was to a man… What a twist in life,’ he thought blankly. He wondered how they appeared to the two Players. At this moment, the pupils of the two Players trembled so violently that it seemed like they’d cause an earthquake.

Teest’s breathing paused for a moment, and he elegantly shifted away, pretending the kiss was practiced.

“Isn’t that enough?” Teest’s tone was almost accusatory. “It’s very rude to treat our kind like this. Are you trying to make enemies with the clan of Shiva by even taking away my lover?”

The succubus remained silent even longer before finally letting out a deep sigh.

“You both come with me,” he said wearily. “The other two humans stay here—and don’t try anything suspicious, or we won’t be so courteous.”

The two Players remained silent. Nol suspected they weren’t scared but simply in shock. Avoiding their intense stares, Nol wobbly stood up, leaving the cell with Teest. As they departed the dungeon, the Players’ eyes followed them.

Nol wanted to mentally communicate with Teest to explain, but Teest remained silent as if nothing happened. Emphasizing now would seem forced. With the situation being so odd and serious matters at hand, it was best to pretend nothing happened. After all, it wasn’t a deep kiss, just a peck.

Thus, the two maintained their silence, and the only sound nearby was the clinking of chains against the floor.

Watching them leave, Anakin and Solo gasped almost simultaneously.

“You said you used the ‘Silent Truth’ to verify, right?” Rogue Solo stuttered. “You said they were half-brothers! Ah, brothers with a couple’s ring pendants?!”

“Maybe they were just acting.” Anakin’s voice was filled with uncertainty.

“You can’t act that out, sister. Imagine us kissing… urgh!” The young rogue didn’t finish before making a gagging sound.

Anakin gagged even louder. “No, no, no. Absolutely not. Just kill me now.”

“Same here.” Solo grimaced. “Did you see any disgust between them? I didn’t. Don’t tell me they’re actually together…”

“’Even though we have different mothers, I swear in the Goddess’ name that our bond is close…’ Landus said so.” Anakin recalled, taking deep breaths. “Thinking about it, this statement also applies to those officially engaged.”

“I get it now.” Solo sighed in relief. “The Temple of Life publicly doesn’t oppose but doesn’t exactly support same-sex marriage either. Given your ‘Saint’ status, they might have been wary of you being radical… Well, misleading us like this is kind of sad.”

“Indeed.” Anakin reflected.

“…So, are they really a couple? Even married? They must be rare NPCs!”

“Exactly, we have to build a good relationship with them.” Anakin nodded seriously.

Ignoring their handcuffs, the two decisively high-fived.

……

Nol and Teest followed the succubus towards the main chamber of the nest.

Slowly, Nol recognized the familiar design. The surroundings grew brighter, with colorful stones forming beautiful patterns on the tiles. The milky-white walls were spotless, adorned with ever-fresh flowers and leaves. The increasingly sweet fragrance gave a sense of lightheadedness.

The succubi maintained their nest well. Everything was vibrant, and the guards diligently stood their posts—though dressed in refined armor, they looked like dried-up corpses.

This made even the most charming scene eerily uncanny. Nol’s mood grew heavier, almost forgetting the lingering sensation on his lips.

The succubus leading them remained silent, guiding them to the royal court’s grand hall. As they arrived at the grand door, it opened on its own.

Behind the slowly opening doors, Nol saw the succubus’ throne. It was decorated with gem-carved flowers, an exquisite seat of power that was as beautiful as a work of art.

However, the seat was empty.

The author has something to say:

Laughing to death at how they kissed for the first time——

Nol: “Teest didn’t mention it, so he probably didn’t mind. I shouldn’t awkwardly bring it up…”

Teest: “Nol didn’t mention it, so he probably didn’t mind. I shouldn’t awkwardly bring it up…”

The two Players: “They must be involved!”

Kinky Thoughts:

I believe the term for a male succubus is an incubus. However, I don’t want to change too much terminology in case it’s important to the story and want to reflect the author’s intention since she didn’t specifically use (梦魇).
