Chapter 56: The Lovers’ Reunion

No one said a word.

Melody, who had gained a new body, tried to move a few steps. Probably due to being unable to adapt to the weight of the wings that suddenly grew out of her waist, she couldn’t maintain her balance and fell to the ground after shaking. The huge wings fluttered disorderly. She was embarrassed like a newborn cub. The tether on the bag containing the music score was broken by the distortion of her body, and the book in the bag slid out of her mouth and fell into the soil. She looked up at him with pleading in her eyes.

Nemo was stunned. Jesse Dylan’s statement about Vincent Town was indeed true. He didn’t know what the rest of the team thought. At least at that time, he subconsciously didn’t take it completely seriously. If that was true, then the conflict between Vincent Town and the Grace Bluebirds was just too cruel.

Everyone in the team seemed to be aware of this problem. All four of them were silent while the gray parrot was pacing beside Melody, looking around curiously.

She was still struggling on the ground. A few shimmering blue feathers fell off, and they were as beautiful as man-made products. They didn’t match the dirty ground at all. Oliver was the first to move. He cautiously approached the Bluebird, who was trying to stand up, and stretched out his hand.

“Do you mind?” he asked in a low voice.

Melody let out a meaningless low cry while the hand remained motionless. A few seconds later, she realized that the other party couldn’t hear her voice, so she blinked and shook her head unskillfully.

“Nemo, give me a hand,” Oliver beckoned, cautiously holding up one of her arms. “We have to help her find a safer place.”

If left alone, the Bluebird, with abundant magic but unable to move, would definitely become food for beasts. Adrian was taller than them, and Ann was a little shorter. Their similar height wouldn’t make Melody too uncomfortable. Nemo walked forward quickly and held Melody’s other arm. They held the beautiful newborn creature steadily, and she finally stood up again, dangling between them.

Ann picked up the dirty fairytale book from the ground, flipped through it casually, then sighed.

“…We can’t talk to her again, can we?” She asked in a low voice. Her expression showed hints of sadness.

“She should be able to understand what we say. When she gets used to her body, you may be able to communicate using text,” Adrian replied matter-of-factly.

The female warrior closed the book with a snap and turned her face to the side, facing no one.

“I didn’t think it was a curse,” the gray parrot said smugly, trying to stretch its neck. “You see, my judgment is very accurate!”

“But you didn’t know what it was,” Nemo added mercilessly, then crossed his gaze from the drooping head of the Bluebird and cast his eyes on Oliver on the other side. “Ollie, shall we send her to Pasototu? They shouldn’t reject her now, and we can’t just leave her in the forest like this.”

“I have a plan,” Oliver whispered. “But I’m a little worried… I hope they at least let Pasototu out. I don’t think they will simply accept Melody.”

“However, if she uses the Forest Ballad on them…”

“It’s useless.” As the sun set, the forest became darker. At that moment, Adrian was casting an illumination spell on Oliver’s behalf. He spoke without looking back. “She’s just the trigger, not the root cause. They want war, and Miss Delaney’s statement cannot change this.”

The Bluebird hung her head lower.

“…If they want to fight us, we should be able to handle it,” Nemo confirmed bitterly. “I mean, in the worst scenario imaginable… Let’s not kill her.”

“I can handle it. At any rate, Dylan has lived to the present as a God envoy, so they won’t pick a fight with us casually.” Ann flipped through the fairytale book in the dim moonlight. “This girl has abandoned everything. She deserves a little reward. If the one up in heaven has no such plan, I’m willing to do it for her.”

They walked back and forth along the way. The illusion array seemed to be constantly changing. Grotesque trees covered the area, so they could only move forward based on intuition. Along the way, they didn’t know how many illusory trees and boulders they had hit head-on, and their pace was slow as they had to assist Melody. It wasn’t until midnight that their group finally touched the familiar illusion boundary. The warm touch made people feel comfortable, and after a short period of warmth, the giant tree appeared in their vision.

The giant tree at night was more beautiful than during the day. Orange light came from the nest where the Bluebirds hung, and the thick branches were like a full moon. This time, no Bluebird entered the dreamland with them. Within half a minute, Adrian, who was walking in front, was stopped by several guards.

The guards were wearing nondescript, strange helmets. Their armor seemed to be scattered at first glance, but they were cleverly covering their vitals. The Bluebird rose almost immediately in front of them. The sharp metal blades tied to their forelimbs were straightforwardly facing them, showing a dangerous luster of poison.

All three people in the team looked at Nemo at the same time. No one knew what was currently going on inside her head as Melody looked at the giant tree in awe.

Nemo adjusted his breath. “We found a single Bluebird and this is the nearest tribe. Your chief shouldn’t have banned us from entering and leaving.”

“She’s not one of us.” One of the guards replied in a bad tone. His helmet had an extra ring of dark shards than the one next to him. He should be the leader or have a higher rank. At that moment, he was staring straight at Nemo’s mouth, as if looking for some hateful and dirty trick. “There are no other tribes in this country. Where did she come from? What tricks are you playing?”

“Can’t you tell your own kind?” Nemo sighed modestly. “Her condition is not very good. She’s too weak to stand. If you leave her alone, do you know what will happen?”

The guard leader stared at him with anger, and Nemo pretended not to notice.

“This is really the first time I have seen such a ‘kind-hearted’ human.” The Bluebird didn’t take a step back, and there was mockery in his tone. Nemo scratched the tip of his nose with his fingers. It was amazing. Even though it was full of hatred, the melody was still beautiful, although it was a bit depressing.

“If you really can’t trust us, please find the chief or the envoy.” He suddenly came up with an idea and immediately put it into action. “We can’t stand here all night.”

It turns out that they and these Bluebirds at least shared the same attitude towards Jesse Dylan. He wasn’t sure if it was out of rejection, disgust, or some other emotion, but instead of Jesse, the Bluebirds went to find their chief instead.

“Pasotalo. We’ve met.” The chief glanced at Nemo and reported his name without any intention of taking the human in front of him seriously. His gaze stayed on Melody the whole time.

“Nemo Light.” Nemo was still holding up Melody’s arm, so he had to bend slightly. “I have something I want to talk to you about alone. It’s very important.”

“You ask too much—”

Pasototu’s father raised the wings on his forearm and motioned the guards to retreat.

“At least they are not hostile.” He nodded simply. “Speak up if you have something to say.”

“Why did you lock up Pasototu?” Nemo spoke quickly, although he didn’t know whether this was effective for the so-called “telepathy”. “Was it because he fell in love with a human?”

“It’s because he forgot his responsibilities.” Pasotalo’s voice sank. “His mother was killed by humans so I’ll no longer have offspring… Yet he dared to fall in love with—”

“This is Melody Delaney,” Nemo whispered. “Your son is not in love with a human.”

Pasotalo’s reaction was very straight-forward. He didn’t seem shocked by the statement at all and instead moved and drew several arrays in one breath in front of him. The array blew long feathers on Melody’s head and neck like a hot wind, causing her to shiver and shrink back, but no special change could be seen.

“It is indeed our compatriots.” There was finally a bit more hesitation in his voice.

“We haven’t determined whether Jesse Dylan’s statement is true, but at least Melody Delaney is indeed not a human.”

“Although I don’t know how you got this lady, if you want to use her to pretend to be the witch that covers up the plans of the humans in Vincent Town… I’ll tell you very clearly, it’s impossible. Preposterous.”

“Just let them meet. You should know your son.” God, he wasn’t really good at this. Nemo didn’t like such a confrontation. At the moment, he could only imagine the chief of the Bluebirds in front of him as a big blue potato.

“No need.”

“Aren’t you curious as to how she became like this? It’s only a meeting. We also know where the location of the dungeon is… All we ask is for a little time from you.” Nemo tried his best to ignore the fluster in his heartbeat and tried to control his breathing.

Pasotalo narrowed his eyes. Melody could at least understand Nemo’s lingua franca. She raised her head and looked at the strange Bluebird in front of her with hopeful eyes.

“……Fine.” As if moved by Melody’s eyes, Pasotalo agreed stiffly. “I’ll only give you ten minutes.”

They all underestimated the determination of this weak girl.

Unlike during the day, the dungeon at night was lit with pine oil torches. Pasototu stayed motionless behind the cell. There wasn’t even the sound of friction from the chain on his body. Melody broke free from Oliver’s and Nemo’s help the moment she saw him. She rushed forward resolutely, like a moth to a flame. Although her body was weak after her transformation, her two forelimbs were still wrapped in the brilliance of magic. Melody Delaney fiercely tore open the cold metal bars and squeezed in through the deformed gap.

Pasototu stood up. His body trembled slightly, and he stared at the strange Bluebird in front of him. The light in his eyes lit up a little bit.

They stood face-to-face, carefully confirming each other’s breathing and heartbeat. Melody reluctantly but stubbornly remained standing, trying to draw the Forest Ballad in front of her lover, but unlike not long ago, her forelimbs shook badly this time. The unformed array collapsed in the air again and again.

She gave up, and after a moment of contemplation, she gently raised her forelimbs again and began a strange gesture. Again and again, simply on repeat.

“War language.” Pasotalo’s tone became stiffer. “This is impossible.”

“War language?”

“Only this tribe and the humans in Vincent Town understand…” The chief’s feathers shook vigorously. “Those idiots can’t hear anything, so this is the sign language we use to negotiate during war. What the hell is she…”

“What is she saying?” Nemo found that he didn’t know anything about what Melody was talking about, which made him a little uneasy.

And Pasotalo answered his question.

Oliver found that Nemo’s body was obviously stiff. He put a hand on his shoulder soothingly and asked, “What is she doing?”

“She was repeating a sentence using the war language of Vincent Town… That’s the only language they have in common.” Nemo’s voice was a bit muffled.

In a long war, a kind of sign language gradually emerged. The two parties could not speak or even judge whether the expression on the other’s face was joy or anger. Only tears and blood were the common denominator, but war inevitably produced prisoners of war, and they had to negotiate with each other, so they would communicate by waving their arms and exchanging hatred and contempt with extremely simple and limited signs.

“What is she saying?”

“‘You killed me’,” Nemo replied softly.

The two Bluebirds in the cage got together. Melody subconsciously raised her forelimbs, as if she was afraid that she would not be able to control her strength. She hesitated for a while, and then retracted timorously. In the end, she pressed her cheek against her lover’s right eye, which had lost its vision and closed her eyes. Pasototu sighed slightly. His sigh was almost drowned out by the clatter of the chains rubbing against each other. He let out a soft chirp that was warm; perhaps the warmest melody Nemo had ever heard.

“…And he also answered her.” Nemo continued, turning his face in Oliver’s direction. His face was pale in the light of the fire and held traces of loss.

“Pasototu?”

“Yes.”

“Did he recognize her?”

“…He said, ‘I love you too’.”

Chapter 55: Nirvana

The tunnel was hidden in the shadow of the giant tree. After staying in the muddy air of the tunnel for a while, the various smells in the breeze from outside became more intense. Water droplets dripped on the edge of the red mushroom umbrella cover, rolled along like snails, then dissipated before falling to the ground, leaving a strong smell of fresh fungi. All kinds of greenery were mixed in one place, covering up the rotting dead leaves, insect shells, and tree trunks scattered across the ground.

Under the greenery, their footsteps made fine and crisp moist sounds.

The attitude of the Bluebirds behind him was still alienated. Jesse Dylan’s status as an envoy may not really be that useful, or the Bluebirds didn’t want to end the status quo.

Nemo ignored the bad attitude of the Bluebirds. He walked forward in great strides, even if he didn’t know where he was going. He needed to find something for himself to do in order to relieve the anxiety that was rolling around as if there was a needle stabbing inside his heart. Nemo didn’t look at Ann, nor did he look at the Knight Commander. He stared at his steps and refused to look at any living thing.

Reality frustrated him. After getting the answer from Telaranea, he just wanted to believe that he was just a human with strange abilities. He could have attributed all the many mysteries to talent. Perhaps it was because the stars were aligned when he was born, or Zenni had accidentally sneezed at his mother and spattered stars on her, which comically gave him the ability to become immune to all damage from the Abyss, leaving behind just the good. Even if he was out of control in the face of Witherspoon, he could push the reason to Bagelmaurus. It may have forgotten Witherspoon, or its memory could’ve flowed into him.

However, talent could explain his physique, strength, and even his ears, but it couldn’t bring him real knowledge. Nemo wished from the bottom of his heart that he could only hear the birdsong but couldn’t understand the meaning behind those melodies.

Unfortunately, he could understand that Bagelmaurus and these birds were not related in any way, so he could no longer deceive himself.

Nemo stopped and fell into a flutter of confusion. Was this question really that important? He thought to himself that he could even face death calmly. In contrast, whether he was human or not wasn’t a big problem. He wasn’t the only toy of fate. If Dylan didn’t lie, then the people of Vincent Town would face a more serious situation.

What was he so anxious about?

He thought for a while, but didn’t get an answer that could convince him. At this moment, the Bluebird behind him finally couldn’t help but speak.

“Where did you learn our language?” His tone wasn’t friendly, and his dark eyes were as cold as stone.

“I don’t know,” Nemo shrugged. “Believe it or not, I really don’t have a clue.”

“In just a few weeks, three humans have been involved in our affairs. One could write our text, one could speak and understand our language, and one had fascinated Pasototu to the point where he lost all his senses,” he complained bitterly. “Are betrayal and theft no longer satisfactory to your kind anymore?”

“…Are you really going to attack Vincent Town?” Nemo ignored the hostility in his tone as he asked in a deep voice.

“Attack? This time they went too far. Usually, they kill our compatriots, steal our bodies in the Holy Land, and cut them into pieces to sell as commodities. We consider these small grievances, but this time, they are eyeing Pasototu, our future chief. This is so they can catch us all—”

“They may really love each other.” The fairytale stained with blood and tears flashed in Nemo’s mind, and he couldn’t help closing his eyes.

“Pasototu is the strongest and most beautiful one in our tribe. How could he fall in love with a monster?” The Bluebird sneered. The dark cyan ore covered with beeswax that was wire-wrapped around its neck swayed. “His brain isn’t broken. They must’ve cast a curse on him. The humans must hand over the witch. Otherwise, there’s no need to talk.”

“Did Jesse Dylan tell you…”

“Only those old antiques believe in the ‘divine envoy’. My sister’s head was cut off and thrown into the mud. Just because the skull and brain were not used, they’re afraid of the gaze of the dead, who will leave a curse. Those cowards dare not attack adults. She was still so young, and her bones had not hardened. If there is a God, where was he at that time?”

The magic array pointing at Nemo’s head accelerated and turned, trembling precariously.

“Someone has to pay the price.”

“…I’m sorry,” Nemo said softly.

“No, you’re just saying it,” the Bluebird responded indifferently. “You’re not sorry at all.”

They stopped in front of the giant tree. Oliver and the out-of-place envoy hadn’t caught up yet. It was approaching evening, and the sun had softened. A relaxing light rose color oozed from the edge of the sky, accompanied by the sound of music and the friction of shrubs. It was like a caressing hand or a lover’s breath that could make the hair stand up.

It was a pity that most of the eyes that fell on them were cold.

“Don’t mind what happened just now, Mr. Light.” Adrian broke the sticky silence. His tone was firm and serious. “I think it may have something to do with your missing memory. According to the current clues, I can’t get an exact conclusion… Thinking too much will only make you feel worse.”

“Thank you.” The corner of Nemo’s mouth tugged slightly. “When this task is over, I have to find a therapist to take a good look at my head.”

They stood in front of the giant tree as Bluebirds stared at them from all directions, like some kind of huge lifeform with countless eyes. This time, without Adrian even speaking, even Nemo could feel the increasing hostility in the air. If this was how they acted under the divine envoy, he didn’t want to imagine what their usual attitude towards ordinary humans was.

“Let’s get out of here.” Oliver finally got out from behind the giant tree, moving very carefully for fear of tripping over the clumps of vine under his inattentive feet. “Let’s find Melody first. If Jesse Dylan didn’t lie, then she should be able to give us part of the answer.” He sounded as if he was in a strange mood.

Nemo glanced behind Oliver but didn’t see Jesse following him.

“But how do we find her?” Nemo murmured. He subconsciously leaned closer to Oliver. The unreserved smile on the other party’s face reassured him.

“Ann,” Oliver said, turning to face the female warrior. His momentum had calmed down. “Share it.”

“…Wow, how terrible,” Ann whispered, pulling out a piece of paper from her goatskin waist bag. She unfolded it skillfully with one hand, and orange characters floated over the parchment, showing what looked like coordinates.

“When—”

“She put a spell on the food bag. I happened to see it at that time.” Oliver patted Nemo on the shoulder. “How could our Miss Savage easily let go of the mission target?”

“Fuck you. I’m worried about her.” Ann rolled her eyes.

The orange coordinates flickered slightly. It was ethereal and distorted like steam, and the content was constantly changing. Melody was obviously still active normally. Nemo couldn’t help breathing a sigh of relief.

It wasn’t difficult to find Melody Delaney. She wasn’t far from the Bluebirds tribe. In fact, she has been wandering around the illusion, staggering towards the right direction. When they met again, she was running desperately in the woods like an ugly whirlwind or scarlet lightning. She found them one step ahead and stopped timidly a few steps away from them. There was caution and a little joy in her eyes.

The monster girl was thinner than before. Even if she didn’t look like a human, Nemo was sure of this. Melody was still carrying the two bags on her body. Her eyes looked terribly bright. Now that she didn’t need to steal food from human territory, she smelled much better. At least Nemo couldn’t smell that pungent sourness.

The sun was about to set, and the light blue of the night softened the ugly appearance of the monster.

“It’s you guys.” Her voice was still strangely hoarse and not pleasant to listen to. “You… Have you met my parents?”

Her claws plucked at the mud, and she looked nervous like a criminal awaiting their verdict, but the tension was mixed with a little cautious expectation.

“Yes,” Oliver said. “…We also saw Pasototu.”

Melody’s body froze. She opened her mouth and seemed to forget how to make a sound. “Where is he? Is he okay? He… Does he…”

“Pasototu is jailed by the tribe, as you have guessed,” Nemo said solemnly. “He has always wanted to see you.”

Tears rolled down the monster’s cheeks and penetrated into the unpleasant looking folds of flesh. “I know,” she said. “…But the way I am now…”

“There are now three theories about your deformation.” Adrian said to the monster while staring at it with his blue eyes. “Generally, this situation stems from a demon’s curse, but you call it God’s punishment. Now there’s a third scenario… Do you want to know it? I have to say, it’s a bit cruel.”

“Can it change this situation, Mr. Monk?” After a moment of contemplation, Melody asked seriously.

“Maybe.”

“Then tell me.”

“This is an enchantment,” Adrian said. “Your love has lifted it. After the process of being lifted… You’ll become a Bluebird, Miss Delaney. The people of Vincent Town may all be within the scope of this enchantment.”

Melody Delaney was so shocked by this absurd statement that she stopped breathing.

“I just can’t figure it out at all.” The voice of the former Knight Commander was low and soft. “About the time difference between the enchantment lifting…”

“If this is true…” She shivered violently, and her breathing became short. “If this is true… I can explain.”

“Love is not that simple. I gradually and uncontrollably fell in love with him. I struggled for a long time, Mr. Monk. I knew that it was wrong, and my parents would not agree with me. I knew that I would break their hearts… But…” Her voice became lighter. “But only when I’m by his side, can I feel that the world is full of beauty and hope.”

“The night I escaped, I made up my mind. I couldn’t fool myself any longer.”

“Now tell me, kind lady… What did my parents say? Did they give up on me or… Are they sad?” There were traces of remorse in her voice.

“They want us to kill Pasototu.” Ann moved her eyes away. Her tone was flat; almost cruel.

Melody was silent for a long time. She was still trembling slightly, as if she was going to freeze to death in the summer night.

“Oh,” she sighed, her face flushed.”…I know.”

“I never expected that there would be a miracle in this world until I met him and fell in love with him on my own accord. This was the first.” Her voice began to become light and gentle. “Desperate and selfish, the love that I didn’t expect him to respond… You seen him, how beautiful he is.”

“Yet he returned his love to me. This was the second. I shouldn’t be so greedy… Expecting my parents to agree with me.” Her voice became lighter, like thin ice about to melt in warm water.

“Thank you for bringing me the third miracle.”

A blue glow flickered around her body. The rotten skin fell off, replaced by blue feathers. Huge wings grew from behind her waist and stretched out awkwardly. Her twisted arms became straight and gradually covered with scales and fine feathers. An obsidian-carved bird’s beak appeared on her face, and the cyan color of her iris faded and turned into darkness like the late night.

A beautiful and elegant Bluebird spread its wings.

She opened her mouth, but Nemo only heard meaningless chirps. She obviously didn’t understand the language of the Bluebird tribe. Melody herself realized this. She stretched out her forearm that turned into wings and slowly gestured in the air. Nemo was familiar with this array. It was the one Oliver used against the scorpion-tailed wolves in the woods.

The magic array of the Forest Ballad was gradually completed.

A torrent of complex emotions overwhelmed them. It was wrapped in gratitude, sadness, and despair, and eventually turned into great happiness.

Chapter 54: The Man Without Desire

Nemo shuddered.

He still remembered the appearance of Vincent Town—the soft-toned houses, the carefully tended flower beds, and the atmosphere of life that permeated every corner of the town. Although the clothes of the people who came and went weren’t bright, they were mostly neat and tidy. They talked in a lingua franca with a strong accent and kept their voices down when they were close. The town was indeed clearly marked on every map with ink.

“This is impossible,” he murmured. “Melody mentioned that people can’t hear the Bluebird song… Vincent Town is a town recognized by Willard, and they are legal citizens of Willard.”

“Just like the opening remarks of a fairytale, this is a story a long time ago—a long time ago. But I don’t like telling stories, and you’re not children with insomnia.” Jesse dragged his tone as if he was bored. “I only need one answer. Do you want to help? Don’t be nervous. I don’t need you to crush any earth-shattering conspiracies, and of course I won’t ask you to save everyone. It’s enough that these little birds do not go extinct—that is, as long as one male and one female are guaranteed to live. Isn’t this a very low requirement? Of course, if you want to give up, I won’t stop you.”

“Three days.” Oliver pondered for a moment. “Give us three days. We need to make sure you’re not lying. Before that, let’s… maintain a cooperative relationship.”

“Then I’ll take it as your consent.” Jesse glanced at their faces and gave each of them a triumphant smile, then turned his back contentedly and swayed towards the direction of the tree hole. “I believe you need some time to digest… When you want to see Pasototu, just come directly to the tree hole to find me. The weather is so fine today that I want to take a nap.”

The Bluebirds looked at them from a distance and whispered like soft choruses. Nemo was almost distracted by the wonderful music again. He tried his best to turn his attention back to his companions.

“You’re going to wade in muddy waters again,” Ann said quietly. Unlike last time, there was no dissatisfaction in her tone now.

“We can’t believe everything Jesse Dylan says.” Oliver shook his head. “But one thing is true… At least Melody is still our mission target right now, and she may want to know the truth. As Nemo said, we’re likely to fail this mission, and staying a few more days won’t affect anything.”

“I have no opinion,” Ann said simply. “I don’t think her parents are pleasing to the eye.”

“War is not an ordinary battle,” Adrian said in a serious tone. “I don’t think you’re ready.”

“But they won’t necessarily—” Every time they faced Adrian, Nemo felt a little less emboldened.

“They will,” Adrian whispered. “More than half of the Bluebirds are very hostile to us. I’m familiar with this atmosphere. At least Dylan didn’t lie on this point.”

“War!” the gray parrot yelled happily. “Oh, the last time I saw war was in the Abyss. I want to see it!”

“Then that’s the decision,” Oliver said firmly. “Let’s figure this out… We can start with Pasototu.”

“I have reservations.” Adrian pondered for a moment, then added, “Be careful of Jesse Dylan. All this is too coincidental, and I’m a little concerned about his trading partner.”

“Who knows if he’s telling the truth.” Ann curled her lips. “Let’s go and meet Melody’s boyfriend first.”

When he first heard that Pasototu was the chief’s son, Nemo thought he would be placed under house arrest like Melody. It turned out that the Bluebirds here were much stricter than the “humans” in Vincent Town.

Several Bluebirds with ore hanging from their necks followed them closely. A magic array was suspended in the air, facing their heads and ready to activate at any moment. Jesse’s guarantee wasn’t credible at all. While they weren’t badly treated physically, it was a different story mentally.

The Bluebirds led them around behind the tree, through overgrown ferns and weird large mushrooms, and into a slightly gloomy tunnel. There were terrifying sculptures of unknown meaning standing at the entrance of the tunnel. The walls were made of grayish-cyan stones tightly stitched together, without any decoration, giving off an inhuman taste. The prison-like rooms were embedded on both sides of the passage, and the end of the passage seemed to lead to the ground, engulfed by thick darkness. Nemo glanced curiously in the direction of the end and was almost pushed to the ground by the Bluebird behind him.

They stopped in front of one of the cells.

Both wings of the sturdy Bluebird, who was blind in one eye, were chained and firmly tied to the stone wall. There was only a hole at the top of the cell that cast some hazy light in. Although the ground wasn’t too muggy, it was surprisingly humid. Nemo was pretty sure he smelled the festering of wounds.

There was no magic array pointed at Jesse. He leaned against the stone wall in a relaxed manner, and his face was full of smiles as he watched the excitement.

Pasototu was not alone in the cell. There was a taller Bluebird standing in front of him. The muscles of the free Bluebird looked exceptionally strong, and there was a faint streamer on the edge of its feathers. At this moment, it could be seen that the owner of those streamers was extremely angry.

“Swear to me.” The voice of the taller one was deep. Nemo could tell there was anger from its melody.

“I can’t do it. I love her, father.” The blind Bluebird raised his head.

“It’s only three months.” The leader roared. “Don’t you know your identity? If you’re caught by humans, there will be unrest in the tribe and the humans will take advantage of it… I think we have learned enough lessons in this regard!”

“There’s no conspiracy. She won’t lie to me.” Pasototu’s tone was calm. “Melody must be waiting for me. I don’t want her to wait too long.”

“Don’t you feel sick? She’s just a flat-faced monster without feathers. A heretic living in an ignorant world. Think about it, son. If you want, you can pursue any girl in this tribe, and no one would say no to you.”

“She’s unique, father.” Pasototu stated emphatically, as if it were the only truth in the world.

“…It seems you need to calm down for a while.” The chief took a deep breath. “If you continue to be so obsessed, even if you’re my son, I’ll follow the rules.”

“You’re my father, so I don’t want to lie to you.” Pasototu lowered his head.

“Didn’t you tell them?” Nemo couldn’t help turning his face toward Jesse. “…The facts of Vincent Town.”

“I told you.” Jesse shrugged exaggeratedly. “I’ll let you in on a little secret. People prefer to hear lies; they won’t believe a word even if you tell them the truth.”

“What are they talking about?” Oliver said tentatively.

“Let Bagelmaurus translate, Ollie. It’s idle anyway. I have something to ask Dylan.”

“Translate what?” The gray parrot’s bird eyes were blank. “I didn’t hear anything just now.”

Nemo looked at it abruptly, and the smile on the corners of Jesse’s lips became a little deeper.

“Isn’t this a demon’s power?” Nemo said. “I thought I could hear them because of you—”

“Of course not! These birds don’t have demonic blood… Even if they did, you humans are incapable of understanding all human languages. Why would I understand them? Rather, I can’t even hear them!”

For a while, the eyes of the other three instantly gathered on Nemo, causing him to shrink uncomfortably. He didn’t like being watched like this. Although their gaze was not malicious, it felt like he was being punched in the gut. As if perceiving Nemo’s discomfort, Ollie quickly turned his gaze back to Pasototu. Ann and Adrian still stared at him; the latter’s expression became more serious.

“Hear and translate.” Jesse spoke again, with great interest. “It’s really an incredible ability. I didn’t expect this. A demon warlock with the ability to surpass the demon he was possessed by. Or maybe…”

“I thought you could hear it too,” Nemo said dryly.

“Oh, you see, we communicate by text.” Jesse looked directly into his eyes. “You need to know that their voices are outside the range of human hearing, and I don’t have such ability—”

“We probably understand the situation with Pasototu.” Oliver interrupted. “Nemo, tell us the content of the conversation later. I also have something to say to Mr. Dylan, alone.”

Jesse raised his eyebrows high. He once again drew complicated, unknown words in the air. The Bluebirds turned their heads and half-invited, half-coerced the three of them to the exit, leaving only Oliver and Jesse behind. In the cage separated by a wall, Pasototu was panting in pain because of his wound, while the other Bluebird had already flown away through the hole at the top of the cell, leaving behind only falling feathers.

“Ann told me about what happened in the woods,” Oliver’s tone was still polite, but had a rare coldness. He no longer used honorifics when addressing Jesse. “No matter where you get your information… You’ve been suggesting to Nemo that ‘he’s not human’. As you can see, he doesn’t like it.”

“Aren’t you curious?” Jesse said with a smile. “You should know more than me since you stay with him every day.”

“Not curious. Nemo is Nemo.” Oliver’s tone was steady.

“Ah, I forgot.” Jesse glanced at Pasototu in prison. “Love often makes people blind. You like him, don’t you? You don’t have much experience, Mr. Ramon. Everything is easily seen in your eyes.”

“……”

“You can confess to him today, and I assure you that he won’t refuse you. In less than a week, you might even be able to sleep in the same bed, if you know what I mean.”

“…You’re changing the subject.” Oliver breathed hard. His anger was making him a little pale.

“I’m not. I’m talking about the same thing. Mr. Knight Commander is really a gentle person, but he concealed a lot that night. He must not have told you the real reason behind a demon warlock’s deformation.”

“This conversation ends here—” Oliver moved his fingers.

“Ah, after all, that wish was for you. Fate is really cruel.” Jesse didn’t intend to be obedient at all. He shook his head. “Deformation is due to the desire under the desire. Whether it’s love or hate, or whatever—Nemo Light is not deformed. Do you understand what this means? The wish he made with the demon was neither out of selfishness nor any goodwill. This is something that humans are incapable of.”

“I know he looks like a human with his gestures, but speaking truthfully, what you’re falling in love with is probably a piece of nothingness. Shouldn’t you already know? Perhaps he’s just imitating humans.”

“That’s your opinion.” Oliver calmed down, and even smiled. “If your point of view is just that, then I have nothing to worry about.”

Then Oliver breathed a long sigh of relief. The damp air of the tunnel was mixed with a fishy smell composed of fungi and moss, which was neither good nor refreshing, but it made his mood much calmer.

“You’re right. I like him very much, but it has nothing to do with what he is and whether he’ll respond to me…”

The author has something to say:

Jesse: Look, maybe you’ll have an unrequited love all your life—

Oliver: So what?

Jesse: …

…But it’s not unrequited love!

Kinky Thoughts:

Ahhh. I love Ollie and all his small gestures when it comes to Nemo. You know it’s true love based on his actions!

For all this talk about lingua franca, Jesse sure likes to speak in tongues.

Chapter 53: The Reversed Story

“If there is such a human being, I can probably understand the meaning of the envoy of God.” The biggest Bluebird had a serious tone. “Human, if you can understand us, then behave and come with us. The envoy of God wants to see the four of you.” He didn’t intend to answer Nemo’s questions.

“We need to discuss it first.” Nemo responded with a slightly cramped voice. This conversation experience was too unbelievable. He was pretty sure he was still speaking lingua franca, but the Bluebirds undoubtedly understood him.

“Discuss what?” Oliver let go of the hand that grasped Nemo’s wrist, sounding a little confused.

“Their envoy wants to see us,” Nemo dutifully translated.

“It’s probably Jesse Dylan.” Oliver smacked his forehead. “…Now things have become troublesome.”

Nemo also had a headache. They were not going to start a war. According to the current situation, the wisest thing to do was to explore around the tribe, or even find a chance to sneak in, and run away as soon as something went wrong. The last thing they wanted was to be noticed and watched by all the members of the Bluebird tribe. He glanced carefully at the aggressive Bluebirds. They didn’t seem intent on receiving any response that was related to the word “no”.

“That’s good.” Ann suddenly spoke. She wasn’t sure whether the Bluebirds could understand the lingua franca, so she spoke vaguely. “At least we can definitely get what we want, unless that man intends to directly kill us and help the birds worship the heavens.”

“That… Mr. Bird, can you tell me why the envoy wants to see us?” Nemo asked quickly and dryly.

“You’re distinguished guests,” The biggest Bluebird said bluntly. “Don’t worry. We will not hurt you. Unlike despicable humans, we will not tarnish the word ‘fight’, but I hope you know that you have no right to refuse. We don’t want to use force if we can avoid it.”

Nemo quickly translated it back. However, everyone on their team wasn’t a pure-blooded teenager, so the suspicion didn’t dissipate much.

“Let’s go with them first, since they’re already eyeing us.” Oliver sighed. “It’s too early to have a conflict. If the situation is really bad to that point… We could escape the Laddism Church, so we can find a way if needed.”

“Not bad, Oliver. You have already begun to understand the spirit of the Black Chapter.” Ann’s mood finally improved. She punched Oliver’s shoulder with her fist.

Half of Nemo’s mind was stunned by the strange language of the Bluebird, and the other half was uneasy because of the unknown. At this point, he had to squeeze out part of his courage from inside. Adrian didn’t raise any objections, nor did he seem to be following the trend. His calm confidence seemed unbreakable.

“I think it should be fine.” The gray parrot regained some of its momentum after leaving the town that hated monsters. “Jesse is quite tasteful. He…”

“He also calls himself an atheist,” Ann hummed. “While he looks beautiful enough, he’s definitely a poisonous mushroom.”

Nemo turned his face to look at the Bluebirds. Whether it was Bagelmaurus’ words or Ann’s speech about “atheists”, the Bluebirds were unresponsive. They may really not understand the lingua franca.

“Is the discussion over?” The Bluebird asked coldly when he saw that they had stopped making a sound.

“We’ll go with you.” Nemo glanced at the bushes where Fritz was hiding and raised his voice slightly. “But we brought…”

“No need for these,” the Bluebird replied immediately. “We only need four humans and one parrot.”

The fuller goat was chewing on grass leisurely, showing no interest in what was happening in front of it. The bushes shook slightly a few times.

“Well, thank you for your invitation,” Oliver exclaimed knowingly. “We agree to see the envoy. We can give up these treasures. Please feel at ease. We hope for peace from the bottom of our hearts.”

“What is he shouting at?” The Bluebird turned to Nemo.

“He agreed and was expressing his excitement,” Nemo responded deeply.

The Bluebird no longer talked nonsense. They let out a loud chip and their huge claws firmly grasped the waists of everyone in the party, then they plunged into the sky. Compared to Melody’s awkward movements, theirs were much more cautious and graceful. Their sharp claws didn’t even hook into a single thread of cloth.

As they soared into the sky, Nemo was unable to open his eyes against the wind blowing against him. The gray parrot’s claw clung tightly to his robe, while its entire body was flattened on his shoulder. The Bluebirds definitely did this intentionally. They rolled and rotated from time to time, hovering over the green jungle. Soon, Nemo lost his sense of direction, or to be more precise, he was about to lose his consciousness.

Although they didn’t confess their thoughts to Fritz, he seemed like a smart man. He hoped that the young hunter could understand Oliver’s meaning, rather than rush back in a hurry to plunge the Delaney family into chaos. Nemo prayed in a daze.

Fortunately, they didn’t spend too much time wandering in the high icy altitude. With a rapid dive, they returned to the ground. During the descent, they seemed to have passed through an illusion array. For a moment, a warm touch brushed over Nemo’s face, and the scene in front of him became different. It was no longer the repetition of the boring forest. He was greeted with the sight of a strange towering tree that grew in the middle of an open space. Its leaves weren’t dense, and countless huge fruit-like nests wrapped with vines hung from its branches. There were many doors left on the trunk for passage. Bluebirds rested on the strong branches, and many poked their heads out of their nests and looked at them curiously.

There was a huge tree hole where the giant tree met the ground, and the edge of the tree hole was embedded with strange metal decorations. The round ore shone brightly among the silver metals. Vines and thick moss covered the trunk of the tree, and small white flowers hung from the edges of the vines that looked like stars from a distance.

The Bluebirds let go of their claws. Only Adrian landed decently on one knee. This time, even Ann fell flat on the ground.

“Oh, everyone. It’s been almost a week since I saw you,” the expected frivolous voice sounded. Nemo stood up staggeringly and raised his head, seeing Jesse Dylan’s blond hair. He had an extremely complicated ornament around his neck. He walked out of the tree hole and stretched. Compared to humans, he looked more like the rumored forest elves.

He threw cranberries into his mouth, so his voice was muffled. “How’s your mission? Please feel free to speak as they don’t understand the lingua franca.”

He then sucked on his fingers. The fingertips drew dark golden marks in the air, and a group of strange words in circles solidified in the air. The Bluebirds bowed respectfully, and the biggest one stretched out its forelimbs and returned a string of words in a similar style. Nemo couldn’t understand the meaning of those words, which made him inexplicably relieved. However, he always felt that the words were a bit familiar… They were a bit like the handwriting in that fairy tale book.

“Our task doesn’t concern you. In addition, I’m curious about what your intentions are,” Oliver stood up and responded in an unassuming manner.

“It’s very simple. The Bluebirds here are thinking about officially going to war with Vincent Town.” Jesse muttered casually. “Isn’t your mission in Vincent Town? Just a kind reminder that we’re destined.”

“I don’t think our relationship is as good as that, and the way you remind us is too rough.”

“What’s the matter? I told these little birds that you are destined to end this shitty situation. You won’t be treated badly. I can even take you directly to see Pasototu.”

Oliver took a step back and frowned. “We’ve never mentioned this to you.”

“And you said you’re an atheist,” Nemo added, “but now you’re an envoy of God recognized by the tribe?”

“Oh goodness, you two are so cute. Such a snake-level will be eaten with no bones left.” Jesse smacked his lips in a perfunctory tone. “There are two words in the world. One is called ‘intelligence’ and the other is called ‘lies’. Have you two heard of it? I have my ways. Alas, your vigilance hurts my heart. I just want to take care of the younger generation—”

“No, you need our help.” Oliver quickly reached a conclusion.

“…You’re so straightforward, but you’re right. I think you’re more reliable than casually picking up two idiots from outside Vincent Town.”

“What do you want us to do?”

“Why don’t you go and see Pasototu first?” Jesse muttered.

“We may not agree to your request, so we don’t want to owe you any favors first,” Oliver responded politely.

Jesse snorted and tapped his chin with his fingers.

“I just made an agreement with a certain lady two days ago, and she confessed everything to me.” His smile was very bright. “After it’s done, I can get a powerful corpse with plenty of magic in the Holy Land. You see, I’m a pacifist and prefer to trade in a dignified manner than to do it directly or steal. Unfortunately, I can’t do it alone. I have to be the envoy of God, the holy prophet, so I can’t do the dirty work myself.”

“…Just speak frankly.”

“My lovely trading partner… She foresaw endless deaths and corpses. The Grace Bluebirds here will be extinct within the next few weeks, and she doesn’t want to see this happening. Honestly speaking, such an ‘upright’ job is indeed more suitable for you—try and stop this war, darlings*.”

*Clarity: He’s calling them [baobei] (宝贝) = babe/baby/sweetie/darling ect. So when you see any form of this coming from Jesse, just know that it’s this word. This is his manner of eccentric speech and it’s also the reason why they react so creepily to him, as this word is generally reserved for one’s lover or someone you treasure a lot.

“You’re already an envoy. You can tell them to stop.” Nemo touched the goosebumps on his arms and put out his suggestion without any emotion.

“The power of the envoy is not as great as that. Take a step back. Who will stop Vincent Town?”

“You want us to stop a small-scale war?” Ann said sullenly, as she crossed her arms. “That’s interesting. You don’t look like the type to reject what’s near and seek the far*. It’s just a corpse. Compared to painstakingly stirring up the battlefield, I personally think it’s easier to just rob a tomb or kill one, sea scorpion.” Her last word was squeezed through gritted teeth.

*(舍近求远) Idiom referring to seeking things from afar and neglecting what’s close at hand.

“Because it’s fun!” Jesse spread out his hands. “People don’t live and not have fun. I haven’t seen such an interesting thing in so many years. I won’t forgive myself if I miss this.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Dylan. I don’t think this war is interesting, nor do I think my companions and I have the ability to stop a war.” Oliver hesitated for a moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was very solemn. “…Although I personally want to help, I can’t make promises on behalf of everyone about things that can’t be done.”

“No, you have that ability. I’ll help you out.” Jesse Dylan showed a meaningful smile that wasn’t malicious, but a bit creepy. “Oh, don’t make that face. It has something to do with your mission. Pasototu is the only son of the tribal leader, and the leader is going crazy. He can’t wait to tear Melody Delaney to pieces. Are you going to abandon them? Just give up on these poor young people? …I said that it’s not the war that is interesting. It’s them.”

“You must have heard of a few similar, beautiful human fairy tales. The handsome prince becomes a terrifying monster, and the lovely girl uses the power of true love to lift the curse. They even read it to their children! Now the human fairytales have become the Bluebird’s fairytales, but in reverse. Poor Miss Delaney had a simple role change and is now the object that befell the terrible curse. Isn’t this interesting?”

Nemo suddenly felt cold. Even though the sun was just right and every corner of the forest was full of vitality, a cold wind rose from the soles of his feet and chills crawled up his back. “You mean…”

“There are no humans in Vincent Town; never was. Of course, except for outsiders… Melody Delaney is not deformed. She’s just changing back to her original appearance.”

The author has something to say:

There is a reason why the “people” in Vincent Town can’t hear the song of the bluebird 😀

It’s time to see the battlefield, boys.

Chapter 52: The Language of the Bluebird

Mr. Delany breathed a sigh of relief. He had calmed down after venting his anger. Oliver’s attitude seemed unexpected. Mr. Delaney cleared his throat towards the handsome face that was full of a harmless smile, and finally could only let out a cold disdainful snort.

“There’s information.”  He raised his chest and swept his eyes between their group. “Listen, I’ll double the money. You have to bring back the body. I know those evil things will turn themselves into ashes before they die, but there should be a way. Aren’t your black badges snake rank? I don’t want the corpse. You can keep it for yourself.”

“Thank you for your generosity,” Oliver responded quietly, “But that’s a bit difficult. We don’t know much about the Grace Bluebirds in this area.”

“Go and ask her. Melody told her more about it than me.” Mr. Delaney waved his hand at Mrs. Delaney, who was still sobbing. “Don’t try to fool me. I want my daughter to see the body with her own eyes and I want her to go back to the way she was.”

“How do you know she will definitely change back?” Nemo pushed Oliver’s hand away from him and asked unhappily.

“I said, go and talk to my wife. Don’t you understand words, boy?” Mr. Delaney had an air of reluctance to speak any more. He stood up, turned the corner of his mouth rigidly downward, and quickly left the living room. After he left, Mrs. Delaney shrank more nervously. She tried to sweep the wet porcelain pieces with trembling hands, trying to suppress her sobs gathering in her throat, as if it was any louder, it would eat her raw.

Nemo grimaced in the direction of Mr. Delaney’s departure. He didn’t have a good impression of this person. Listening to his tone, Melody didn’t seem to be like a living person but more of an ornament in the house.

“You… What do you want to know?” Mrs. Delaney rolled up her apron and stared uneasily at the ground without looking at them. “You… Oh, do sit down first. Isaac’s temper is actually not so bad. He’s just heartbroken.”

Oliver sat down on the small sofa obediently while Nemo leaned against it with his elbow, not meaning to sit down honestly. Ann and Adrian didn’t move and instead  stood quietly in place.

“I actually care a little. According to your husband, Melody didn’t seem to be the first person to fall in love with a Bluebird,” Oliver’s tone softened a bit. “You didn’t react much to the news of her deformation. You knew that it would happen?”

“…That’s right. She’s not the first. Someone has been deformed before.” Mrs. Delaney still hung her head as she spoke in a rambling manner. “There are only six that I’ve heard of. God, what were they thinking?”

“In other words, falling in love with the Bluebird may lead to deformation? …Didn’t you tell her?”

“Melody is a good girl.” Mrs. Delaney covered her face with her hands. “Don’t look at Isaac like that. He dotes on her. We’ve always given her the best education, the best food, the best clothing… Although it may seem arrogant to say so as her mother, she is really the smartest and most beautiful girl in this town. She couldn’t have those kinds of crazy thoughts, so why tell her such a dirty thing?”

“So you didn’t tell her.” Oliver frowned slightly.

“My Melody is loved by God, and the songs she writes have a soul. If she’s willing to marry Fritz, it would be the happiest life I could imagine for her. Lavinia arranged such a bright life for her, so how could she betray her like this…”

“Fritz?” Nemo noticed the name just now and couldn’t help but interrupt. “Is he from this town as well?”

“Yes, a very good young man. They have grown up together since they were young, and I can see that the child loves Melody deeply. My husband and I both thought they could… But she rejected him!” Mrs. Delaney sniffled. “Fritz is the most perfect child I have ever seen. They’re made for each other… They deserve to be together.”

“But she told you that she fell in love with a Bluebird.”

“When she told me, it was like the sky had collapsed.” Mrs. Delaney hugged her thin shoulders. “However, there were no signs of deformation on her body, so we could still save her. We just… Just let her stay at home and reflect. The beast that bewitched her dared to come to the door, and Isaac shot it and blinded its right eye. This is useful to you, right? Its right eye is blind, and the wound should be new.”

“Then she ran away?”

“Well… Melody had lived a lavish life. We all thought she couldn’t bear the pain and would come back by herself.”

Ann punched the wall, causing Mrs. Delaney to quickly shrink into the sofa.

“Sorry,” Ann said with a dull face. “Please continue.”

“…But she never came back, and we couldn’t find any traces, so we thought… She might have been deformed.”

“A few weeks,” Ann stated flatly.”She said she had been wandering like that for a few weeks and you only posted the task a few days ago?”

“We had no other choice!” Mrs. Delaney twisted her fingers nervously. “We love her. According to the scriptures, we should’ve burned her to death in the first place, but we couldn’t do it. She must be just confused…”

“That Bluebird’s right eye is blind. What else?” Oliver interrupted her babbling.

“I saw it that day. It was very tall and had an uncommon white pattern on its chest. Melody called it ‘Pasototu’. As for the location of the tribe, Fritz can take you there. He’s the best hunter in our town, so he knows better than anyone else.” Mrs. Delaney stood up. Her eyes were flushed. “That kid knows about Melody and the Bluebird and has been helping us find her. There’s no need to keep it a secret from him.”

“You must kill it.” Her voice was louder and soaked in hatred. “There have been successful examples before. As long as you kill it, she’ll definitely be able to change back. Melody’s life cannot be ruined like this. Please…”

“I see. Please tell me where Fritz lives.” Oliver also stood up.

“I can probably guess what you’re thinking.” After leaving the Delaney’s, Nemo poked Oliver. “You want to find Pasototu and find a way to reunite him with Melody, right?”

“More than that.” The overly standard smile on Oliver’s face had disappeared. He rubbed his stiff facial muscles. “Melody’s father has a strange attitude.”

“I can only see that he’s mad.” Nemo muttered.

“He hates Black Chapters.” Oliver surmised. “Generally speaking, will you entrust a group of criminals to find your missing daughter? Even if his original intention was to kill Pasototu… Pasototu isn’t human. Regular mercenaries can take this job. I don’t think he chose us just because we’re cheaper. If I’m not mistaken, the situation between them and the Bluebirds should be very tense, so tense that we’re likely to die on this job.”

“Well, it seems that he doesn’t want to sacrifice ‘innocent’ mercenaries.” Nemo scratched his head. “If we refuse the mission now, he’ll definitely find another Black Chapter, and the new one would likely kill Pasototu. Good idea, Ollie. Anyway, the task is doomed to fail. Let’s meet them before it fails and try our best. If we can’t succeed, we’ll just run away.”

“I agree to continue. Maybe we can find the reason for Miss Delaney’s deformation,” Adrian straightened his collar. “I still don’t think it’s a curse. If something very similar has happened before, then disease can almost be ruled out. It should be an enchantment.”

Ann, who had always been extremely concerned about the task, didn’t participate in the discussion this time. She made a long face and silently untied the rope of the fuller goat.

The gray parrot didn’t enter the house. It stayed on the back of the fuller goat to guard the luggage and was now bouncing around leisurely. The scenery outside the house was still warm and lovely. It may be due to psychological factors, but Nemo felt that the home looked a little less welcoming now.

“Oh, you’re back.” The parrot fluttered its wings. “Someone was sneaking around just now—”

An arrow flew over its head and struck the wooden post by the shed. The gray parrot almost shrank its head into its body. Nemo could see that it wanted to chant a few abyssal spells to teach the culprit a lesson, but he didn’t have to wait for it to open its mouth—

“Stop it!” a young voice shouted.

“But it’s a demon!” another voice complained. “Fritz, you obviously heard it too!”

More than a dozen young people walked in their direction. They were dressed in leaf fragments and grass stems that were covered in blood. The leader was young and handsome, with short, neat honey-colored hair.

“You guys go back first,” the leading young man said to the others, but there was no command in his tone. “Thank you, but just me alone is enough. You can divide up my share of prey. Just treat it as a treat for everyone.”

“But they are snake-level, and there are four people…”

“They went into Uncle Delaney’s home, so they aren’t here to cause trouble. I’m taking them to search the forest.” The young man strode up to them with a refreshing smile. “Hello. I’m Fritz Berman. I’ve just received a summons from the Delaney family. Who’s your leader?”

Oliver stretched out his hand politely, and Fritz grabbed it and shook it vigorously.

“I’ll take you there,” he said with a smile, showing his sharp tiger teeth. His friends looked at them for a while, muttered for a bit, and then dispersed, not forgetting to look back when they were more than a dozen steps away.

“Oliver Ramon.” Oliver nodded.

After confirming that his companions had left, the smile on Fritz’s face gradually disappeared and was replaced by worry. “You… Are you going to kill that Bluebird? Also, I’m really sorry about the arrow just now.” He turned in the direction of Bagelmaurus. The gray parrot turned its head unceremoniously.

There was unexpectedly no hatred or disgust in Fritz Berman’s voice, causing Nemo to raise his eyebrows.

“Yes,” Oliver replied decisively, as if he had no intention of telling the truth.

“I can take you to the vicinity of the tribe,” Fritz said, “but I don’t suggest you do that. Pasototu has a high status in the tribe. If you kill him…”

He didn’t use “it”. Nemo’s eyebrows raised even higher.

“Mr. Delaney will push all this on us, so it will not start a war.” Oliver’s voice wasn’t very enthusiastic. “Please rest assured.”

There were traces of sadness in Fritz’s face.

“Aren’t you worried about Melody?” Nemo asked curiously.

“Of course I’m worried about her. I’m worried about her mental state.” Fritz shook his head and began leading the way. “I have taught her a lot of survival skills. She’s a strong girl and will definitely survive in the wild. But in case she is deformed…”

“Do you also know about deformation?”

“The one who was executed recently for falling in love with a Bluebird was from the Pagan family. I think you should already know. That person used to be my friend. They didn’t plan to burn him to death, but he began to grow blue feathers, and the Pagan family’s faith is very…” Fritz tugged bitterly at the corner of his mouth, “…firm.”

“Melody and Pasototu have been together for more than three months, but she has only recently begun to deform. If love is the reason—”

The young man’s eyes lit up suddenly. His whole body became a little more energetic in an instant. “She only recently begun to deform? Have you seen her?” He leaned in front of Nemo and spoke quickly. “She… Is she okay?”

Nemo was startled. “Not so good, but she’s still alive.”

The brilliance in Fritz’s eyes went out a bit. He lowered his head and wiped the dagger with oiled animal skin as he walked.

“…If falling in love is really the reason,” Nemo continued to ask dryly, “why does it take so long?”

“I don’t know. Lavinia may curse based on her mood.” Fritz’s voice was muffled. “My friend… It only took a month from falling in love with a Bluebird to become deformed. When Melody rejected me, I knew about her falling in love with Pasototu. Then she was locked up.”

The buildings got smaller as they reached the edge of the forest.

“You didn’t go see her? …You still like her?” Oliver asked suddenly as he waved his sword to cut off the vines that were in his way.

“I love her, but before that, we were friends.” Fritz stopped wiping the dagger. “Melody rejected me very clearly, and I respect her will. It’s a pity that her parents seem unable to accept this. I don’t want her to misunderstand… For example, her thinking I’m taking this opportunity to become entangled with her.”

“How far is it from the Bluebird tribe?” Ann, who had been silent all this time, suddenly spoke.

“It will take most of the day, but you should be there before dark. I can only send you to the surrounding area. They know that I’m from Vincent Town. Once they see me, they’ll definitely—”

“Then you’d better hide,” the female warrior said in a deep voice, “because they’re already here.”

Fritz’s movements were quick. He didn’t ask any questions. His fingers drew a simple spell in the air, and after camouflaging his breath, he slid into the shrub next to him like a snake. He made no sound during the entire process.

Four huge blue figures descended from the sky, blowing fallen leaves everywhere. Melody’s appearance was indeed far from a true Grace Bluebird. The heads of the Grace Bluebirds were slightly similar to those of humans, but their eyes weren’t on the sides of their heads like ordinary birds. However, they did possess hard black beaks. Their physique looked stronger than humans, and their whole bodies were covered with beautiful blue feathers.

Their arms were like long wings, and at the end of their legs were sharply scaly claws. On their backs were another pair of even larger wings. It was completely different from Nemo’s previous imagination—they were a very strange and beautiful creature.

One of them crossed its arms in front of him and closed its wings behind its waist. A rough piece of paper floated in front of Oliver with fancy handwriting that didn’t match the texture of the paper. There was only one sentence written on it.

[We’re about to meet again in the Bluebird’s tribe. Follow them, darlings. The new envoy of the Bluebirds.]

There was also a “hot” crossed-out between “new” and “envoy”.

Oliver’s and Nemo’s expressions sank at the same time. In the great spirit of sharing pain, Nemo solemnly handed the note to Ann, whose face instantly wrinkled, as if she had bit into an unripe plum. Only Adrian, who finally read the note, was unmoved and calmly handed the note back.

“Can they understand?” The bluebird who took the note back said to the others. “These people seem to be the scum of mankind. I can’t understand the thoughts of the envoy at all.”

Nemo was shocked and nailed in place. He could understand their words, but he didn’t have time to care about it at this moment.

It was the first time he had heard of such a language.

The melody of their words was pure and beautiful. He had never heard such a tune. It was as if he had lived in the silent underground for the past 23 years, and he had just crawled out of the soil and heard “sound” for the very first time. All the music he had heard before lost its meaning at that moment. They became noisy and thin, and quickly faded from his memory.

“You… The envoy you just mentioned,” after the shock, he instinctively said. “Is it a blond man?”

“Are you talking to them…?” Oliver looked at Nemo in shock. “But they didn’t say anything just now?”

The bluebirds also focused their attention. They exchanged whispers in their beautiful voices and stared suspiciously at the black-haired youth in front of them.

“Can you hear us?” The bluebird closest to them asked tentatively. “How do you know our language? This can’t be. This is pure telepathy… What are you?”

“I’m human.” Nemo gestured in vain. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Nemo, you…” Oliver grabbed one of his wrists. “You’re talking to them, aren’t you?”

“Yes.” Nemo took a deep breath. His expression was solemn. “Ollie, I have to say… There’s nothing wrong with Melody Delaney’s mind. What she said is true.”

“They really aren’t dumb.”

The author has something to say:

Yes, Jesse is here again. Jesse, never give up!

Oliver ushered in the true enlightenment of love (?) His parents were too hard-core… It’s better to be of the same age.

Chapter 51: Blasphemy

Ann was silent for a moment, then quietly winked hard at Oliver and Nemo from an angle that Melody couldn’t see, and then pointed to her head.

“Something seems to be wrong with her in here,” the female warrior mouthed inaudibly.

“When did you start this deformation?” Adrian continued to ask. Melody’s amazing speech seemed to have no effect on him. “Have you done anything you haven’t done before?”

“Isn’t this the root cause? I’m in love with a monster, Mr. Monk. I just want to figure out what this curse is—”

“How long have you been in love?”

“More than three months.”

“If the God you love really wants to punish you, he or she won’t wait until now, right?”

“But…”

Adrian carefully held her forelimbs with his hand and checked repeatedly. His eyes looked very serious. “No matter which religious denomination you belong to, the characteristics of a curse are common. I don’t think you’re cursed, Miss Delaney. This may be some kind of disease or some ongoing enchantment.”

Melody slowly retracted her forelimbs. Her eyes were mixed with disappointment and a little joy.

“What are you going to do now?” Oliver put away the contract. “I assure you, we will not force you to go home, but do you want to keep wandering like this? Your…” He paused. “Where is your lover?”

“I don’t know.” She lowered her head. “We agreed to run away together, but he didn’t show up. I think he must’ve been discovered by his people… Pasototu will never leave me! I want to continue to find a way to infiltrate his tribe, but now I…”

“If this is a disease, you need timely treatment. If this is an enchantment, only by finding the caster can a solution be found,” Oliver suggested carefully. “Maybe you should go back to town first.”

“Impossible. You have helped me a lot, so I’ll let you know—if you’re still going to Vincent Town, remember not to let that parrot speak.” Melody took a few steps back, seemingly bidding them goodbye.

The gray parrot that was having fun in the bag of nuts got stuck. Nemo grabbed it and pulled it out.

“Why!” it squawked discontentedly as it held a handful of nuts in its claws.

“That’s not an ordinary parrot, right?” Melody whispered in an unpleasant voice. “Our supreme goddess, Lavinia… She doesn’t like monsters. They’ll kill it.”

“Lavinia?” Nemo tried to forcefully open the parrot’s claws and retrieve the nuts as he looked at Adrian. The gray parrot was as stiff as a rock at this moment. “I have no impression… Uh, no offense, Miss Delaney.”

“It should be a marginal minority religion,” Adrian said softly. “So, this is why. As long as you return to town…”

“They will definitely kill me. I may not even have time to explain!” Melody screamed. “I know how much they hate inhuman things. My parents are quite gentle… The last person who fell in love with a Bluebird was drenched in oil by his own family and burned alive.”

The gray parrot loosened its grip on the nuts and stood obediently on Nemo’s shoulder, pretending to be a real parrot.

“…It seems that our mission is destined to fail,” Ann sighed. “Anyways, let’s go to Vincent Town to meet the girl’s parents and discuss canceling the task. Melody, do you want us to deliver a message for you?”

“Miss Delaney, are you sure you want to continue looking for your lover?” Oliver persuaded her patiently. “Even if you don’t want to go home, we can take you with us when we leave here and send you to a medical center elsewhere.”

“If he can’t find me when he escapes, he’ll be very anxious.” The ugly monster bowed slightly to them. “This is how I feel, so I… I have to find Pasototu first.”

She was silent for a long time, but her eyes were full of struggle.

“Also, kind lady, if you can… Can you please tell my father and mother about my current situation so that they don’t miss me anymore?”

Ann nodded, still hesitant in her movements. Adrian sighed softly.

“Shall we give her something?” Nemo suggested, pointing to the big bag of food on the goat’s back. “We’ll be in Vincent Town in a few days, and we can resupply there.”

Except for the gray parrot, all of them agreed. They wrapped butter and sugar cubes and stuffed some dried meat and bread into a cloth bag. Ann patted the package and hung it on the monster’s strong arms.

“Melody, your parents may not necessarily give up.” The female warrior pursed her lips. Her voice had a rare dryness to it. “If they insist on seeing you—”

“They won’t.” The monster responded sadly. “Believe me, they won’t… Thank you very much, but I don’t think we’ll see each other again.” She bowed to them again and her flesh pressed out unsightly folds that made people nauseous. Melody Delaney hugged her book and quickly disappeared into the darkness.

The next few days were boringly calm. From opening their eyes to closing, they had been walking, except for the occasional stops to rest and eat. It was fine for the two experienced fighters, while Oliver had a few terrifying blisters on the soles of his feet and would wince every time he got off his feet.

Nemo began to experiment with abyssal magic for healing. After all, they didn’t have a healer, and once they were injured, it would be difficult to treat injuries. When he fought against—or rather, unilaterally defeated—Witherspoon, he had healed more serious wounds than now. In theory, he possessed such capabilities. His test product also had no complaints about this, but even though Nemo was very careful, abyssal magic wasn’t suitable for treating humans. He made those small blisters into a large one, eventually making it seem as if half a tomato was stuck to Oliver’s foot.

“Why don’t I carry you, Ollie?” Nemo poked the blister and said embarrassingly to Oliver. “Sorry.”

Oliver bared his teeth and used the tip of the knife to release the pus and blood, then shook his head firmly and refused. “It’s just a few blisters,” he said with a sullen face, while still maintaining the floating icicles. “Do you still want to try it?”

“Let him go.” Adrian interjected. “If this pain can’t be endured, it’ll be useless for him to pick up a sword. Don’t stand on your tiptoes, Mr. Ramon. Endure.”

Oliver’s expression twisted as he walked, and Nemo’s face was pale. He stared at Adrian’s back and, for the first time, learned about the coldness of the Knight Commander.

When they finally arrived in Vincent Town, the efforts of the two novices did have some results. Although Oliver’s eyes were slightly slit, he could at least step on his wound without changing his facial expression. After dozens of failures, Nemo finally succeeded in conquering the blisters—when they stepped into town, they almost sighed at the same time.

The town of Vincent was no Hailam. It wasn’t much bigger than Roadside Town. Except for the obvious differences in architectural styles, Nemo thought that they had returned to their familiar hometown. The buildings in the town were not orderly. The roofs and walls were painted with bright colors that gave a feeling of joy that was full of warmth. The Delaney family’s home was easy to find. It could be seen that they held a high position in town. Their house was neat and elegant, and there wasn’t a trace of peeling paint on the white railing.

Melody’s father was thin and tall, with thick eyebrows and a few deep wrinkles between them. His eyes slanted down along his hooked nose, giving off a hint of aloofness. Despite her old age, Mrs. Delaney still had traces of her youthful beauty, but that beauty was mixed with a bit of shyness. As soon as they entered the door, she hurriedly withdrew from the living room. Her waist was slightly arched, as if she was overwhelmed.

“You’re the Black Chapters who took the task?” Isaac Delaney’s tone wasn’t friendly. He didn’t even invite them to sit down. He carried the contract parchment rudely and the wrinkles between his eyebrows became more prominent.

“Yes,” Oliver replied quickly. “Actually, we are here…”

“You can start looking for my daughter. If you need more portraits or items from her, just tell me. Hurry up and find her for me,” he rudely interrupted Oliver.

“We have already met your daughter.” Oliver simply got straight to the point. He straightened his slightly bent back due to the pain. “She doesn’t want to return.”

Mr. Delaney laughed angrily. “Nonsense. Of course, I know she doesn’t want to come back. That blasphemous lunatic has disgraced our family! Why didn’t you bring her back? Is there mud in your head?”

“She has been deformed and she wants you to know this,” Nemo said in a deep voice. He didn’t like Mr. Delaney’s tone when he was speaking about Melody. “We’ve seen her. She no longer looks like a human.”

The sound of broken porcelain came from the door. Melody’s mother dropped the tray she was holding, and the beautiful tea set mixed with hot tea fell to pieces on the wooden floor.

“Why are you serving tea to criminals?” Mr. Delaney cried. His face was flushed with anger. “They are snake level! They’re all scum who no one would pity if they died. Now clean it up!”

Mrs. Delaney’s face paled. She covered her mouth as tears gushed down her face. Ten seconds later, she fell softly next to the debris, sobbing loudly. “How could she—”

“We spoiled her,” Mr. Delaney said, gritting his teeth. His voice was close to a roar. “I can’t figure it out. Why can’t she just marry Fritz honestly? Where is she dissatisfied?”

“Honey, stop talking…”

“I’m her father!” he growled irritably while pulling his hair. “Doesn’t she understand? That Pagan family just burned their son to death five years ago! Why can’t she be sensible when she’s our only daughter? That’s blasphemy! Blasphemy! Lavinia is on—”

“Do you want to continue this task?” Ann interrupted with a frown. “Your daughter told me about the situation here. Even then, do you still want us to bring her back?”

“Of course not!” Mr. Delaney cried. “I want to change the terms of the mission. I’ll add more money. You..” he took a deep breath.

“You go and kill that damn blue-haired beast. Without that bane, she’ll definitely change back!”

“You—” Nemo was just about to open his mouth, but a hand covered it before he could speak the unspoken words. Oliver’s palm was warm. Nemo turned his head with difficulty, seeing a warm and polite smile on Oliver’s face.

“Okay,” he agreed politely. “Can we get information about the Grace Bluebirds?”

Chapter 50: Deaf or Dumb

This time, Nemo reacted the fastest. He quickly took out the tattered book from the bag beside the goat and handed it to the figure with both hands, accompanied by a polite bow.

“We only have this book and this music score.” He asked solemnly, “Did you lose this?”

As soon as Ann’s hand touched the spear, Oliver’s sword was only half drawn out, and Adrian was already ready to fight. At this moment, their actions froze, and the scene fell into an awkward silence for a while.

“I look much better than it!” the parrot exclaimed. “Why are you so polite to it?”

The deformed monster didn’t seem to expect this either. It wandered suspiciously a few steps away from Nemo, dragging its hands hard against the ground. Its eyes weren’t visible, not white like birds but closer to humans. If they ignored the twisted flesh, they looked like beautiful cyan eyes. It was a pity that its feathers were all sticky, and its skin was full of filth that exuded an unpleasant sour smell. The vague beauty immediately dissipated.

“…Thank you?” There was still a bit of doubt in its voice, and it didn’t get any closer.

“I’ll put it here.” Nemo picked a place with thicker grass and gently put the book on the ground. He felt a bit regretful. Even if it was a fairy tale with an old-fashioned ending, he had only read half of it in that short amount of time. “Come and get it yourself.”

As he retreated, the monster quickly swept back a few steps. It was extremely fast and seemed to be guarding against possible attacks, but nothing happened. It tilted its head, slowly moved to the grass, stretched out its twisted forelimbs, and carefully picked up the book. But those sharp and deformed fingers were not suitable for turning a book, so the tip of its finger almost pierced the already dilapidated book. Fortunately, the monster reacted quickly enough. It only scratched its palm by deflecting its finger. Blood gushed out along the wound, bright red, that was very similar to humans.

The monster lowered its head, as tears slowly gathered in its beautiful eyes. It let them drip on the pages of the book. It gave up flipping through the book and clumsily picked it up and held it between its wings and arms, as if it was embracing a fragile soap bubble.

Nemo scratched his head. Now he knew where the blood and water stains came from. He pulled out a spare cloth bag from the goat and handed it to the monster.

“Can I help you?” he asked gently. “You see, we can communicate. It’s just a book, and we don’t want to have any conflict with you.”

“…Thank you,” the monster finally spoke again. Its voice was hoarse, as if it had swallowed corrosive poison. It didn’t get close, nor did it take the cloth bag. It seemed to be completely discouraged, and the ferocity that it had just shown to them was gone, and it became very timid. “I won’t bother you. I didn’t mean it just now… But you’re Black Chapters, so I was a little scared.”

“We are just here to find someone,” Oliver said slowly. He took the cloth bag in Nemo’s hand, tore off a few strips of cloth from the mouth of the bag, and tied it into a sturdy small hanging bag, just enough for the monster to hang it on its chest. “Take it—use it to hold the book. Otherwise it will be easy to lose it again.”

The monster was silent. It looked at the four people in front of it, and the tears in its eyes became more obvious under the light of the bonfire. After a while, it began to sob in a low voice—It looked like it wanted to leave, but it couldn’t make up its mind, like a person who was about to freeze to death who refused to leave the embers of a fire.

Ann pondered for a while, as if she had noticed something. She grabbed the cloth bag in Oliver’s hand, thrust the spear into the ground, and walked straight over, raising her hands and feet with some intimidation. The monster was stunned in place and did not avoid her—the female warrior grabbed the book, put it in the cloth bag, and then hung the cloth strip around the monster’s neck.

“All right,” she said. Nemo could still smell the sour smell a few steps away, but it didn’t make Ann frown once. “Although I don’t know why you speak a common language, or how you became so unlucky—in short, if you meet a blond man with a beautiful face who speaks sweet words, remember to stay away from him. He’s probably thinking about your body.”

“A Grace Bluebird?” Nemo stared at the monster in shock. “…It looks like this?”

“Not exactly.” Ann rolled her eyes. “But the skeleton is really similar. It should be the same race, but this one is cursed.”

“But it’s—”

“It’s a her.” Ann waved her hand impatiently. “Pay attention to your words.”

The monster’s sobbing became louder, and it—or rather, she held the cloth bag tightly to her chest and her hoarse voice trembled visibly. “I’m not a Grace Bluebird.” She squeezed the sentence out with great difficulty and shrank into a ball. “I’m really not… I’m human.”

Even the gray parrot was stunned and speechless. Ann turned her face slowly and looked at her incredulously.

“You don’t look like bad Black Chapters… You’re the only people who have been willing to talk to me in the past few weeks,” she said, shivering. She seemed to be more receptive to Ann’s approach than Nemo’s and Oliver’s. “You even have a monk. Mr. Monk, you must have seen a lot of curses. Do you know what’s wrong with me? Please…”

“It’s impossible to judge from appearance alone.” Adrian looked at her carefully by the light of the fire. “You need to tell me how this came about. Miss Savage, is it convenient to perform an illumination spell?”

“But there’s the smell of a curse on her body,” the gray parrot muttered, looking lost with interest. It flew onto the back of the fuller goat and began to steal nuts from the bag to eat. Everyone was so surprised by this moment that no one had time to take care of it.

Ann’s face was still in shock. She stretched out her hands numbly and the soft white light suddenly broke through the darkness. The appearance of the monster girl was captured more clearly and looked even more terrifying. She instinctively shrank into the dark shadows, as if she was afraid of light.

“I… I’m from Vincent Town.” She spoke tentatively after a half-minute pause. “My name is Melody Delaney.”

“…Why does this name sound a bit familiar?” Nemo turned to Oliver stiffly. “Am I hearing things right now?”

Oliver took out the contract parchment paper and confirmed it several times. “But the information…”

There was a very fine portrait attached to the parchment roll, and the girl in the painting was very beautiful. The missing Melody Delaney had fluffy black curly hair and was well-dressed. She held a lute in her arms, and her smile was pure and refined.

“Are you Melody Delaney?” Oliver tried to calm his voice. “The daughter of Isaac Delaney in Vincent Town?”

“You know me?” The monster, or Melody Delaney, immediately retreated into the darkness again.

“Your parents posted a search mission last night.” Ann hurriedly comforted it. “Don’t be afraid. We’re the Black Chapters who accepted the task. We can…” Halfway through speaking, her voice stopped awkwardly.

Nemo probably knew what Ann was thinking. How would they bring someone like Melody Delaney back in this kind of state? What was more…

“I’m not going back!” The unpleasant voice suddenly increased by several octaves, almost breaking the sound barrier. “I finally escaped. I will never go back—!”

“Let’s continue first.” The reasonable Knight Commander was the calmest at the moment. “How did you become like this?”

“I don’t know, I was fine when I escaped.” She stretched out her arms to her face, as if to cover it. Unfortunately, her sharp fingers and claws only added fresh new wounds to her face. “I just escaped. Is this really God’s punishment?”

Nemo immediately turned his gaze to Adrian. He hadn’t heard Adrian praise God before. The current scene was very suitable for the sentence “God is forgiving”, and he couldn’t help but speak for the Knight Commander.

“Although our beliefs may be different, I don’t think so,” Adrian said seriously, without the slightest intention of praising God in a recitational tone. “Don’t draw conclusions too quickly, Miss Delaney. If you don’t mind… Why did you run away from home?”

“Because I met someone who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.” The muscles in her face twitched a few times. Nemo guessed it was a smile. “Then my parents, they… Thought I was crazy or suffering from something. But I love him with complete sobriety.”

Nemo and Oliver glanced at each other. Not knowing if he was seeing things, he felt Oliver’s eyes seemed a little flighty.

“He?” Ann interrupted in surprise. “Your parents’ reaction was so strong that I thought you were in love with someone who was a girl. Vincent Town is a small town, so it’s not so—”

The monster shook her head gently.

“My lover’s name is Pasototu.” There was a bit more softness in her hoarse voice. “He’s a Grace Bluebird.”

For a moment, Nemo saw a similar emotion on Ann’s face—for a few seconds, she obviously thought that the girl was crazy, but she soon suppressed her surprise. He and Oliver lived in a remote town for more than 20 years and had no idea what a Grace Bluebird was, so they had to look at Ann blankly and wait for her to continue.

“They can’t even talk.” Ann said in shock, stopping Adrian, who was just about to speak with a gesture. “They—uh, sorry—they don’t have the wisdom even close to humans. They are just… Bird monsters who can’t even chirp.”

“It seems you can’t hear them either.” She looked at Ann with sad blue eyes. “They don’t ‘have wisdom close to humans’, because they are smarter than humans. Yes, people have repeatedly told me that they are evil and stupid monsters who are unfit to live in this world.”

“But I heard it,” she said with difficulty. “I heard the most beautiful song in the world. They have been talking with music, and they are no different from us.”

“They’re not dumb. We’re just deaf.”

Chapter 49: Music Score and Deformity

“They were attracted by people.” Adrian’s tone was affirmative.

“Although I don’t know the means,” Ann sneered, “I think we all know who’s behind it.”

The fuller goat that was carrying the luggage shivered behind Jesse, although Jesse tried to stop it. The blond young man petted the goat’s face casually. “I’m not stupid enough to do this kind of thing just after a few words.” He kissed the goat’s furry face very naturally. “Besides, you just saw it. Did I do anything suspicious? If you insist on the reason… Well… It seems that someone was experimenting with abyssal magic just now, and maybe the wolves were frightened by the aura of a demon.”

Nemo stood in place, a little embarrassed. He had just cast a spell, but he didn’t know the effect of the spell himself, so he couldn’t deny that possibility.

“Well, sorry. There’s no evidence,” Ann said with a grin. “Nemo, don’t mess around. Now that Oliver’s awake, let’s keep going. It’s just this—” she shook her hunting spear at Jesse. “You’re not welcome.”

“Mr. Dylan, we really have no intention of traveling with you,” Oliver said politely but kept his tone distant. “Can you stop following us?”

“Darlings, we have only known each other for such a short time and we’re breaking up already?” Jesse said sadly to the fuller goat, and then looked pitifully at Oliver. “Well, Mr. Ramon, since you’re so unwelcoming to me… Well, are you going to stop thinking about it? I’m very useful, you know! If you need a love guide—”

“Goodbye.” Oliver nodded coldly. Nemo suddenly wanted to laugh. Oliver had been much softer towards the scorpion-tailed wolves just now.

Jesse pretended to be sad and breathed heavily. He picked up the cloth bag and blew a kiss at them. “I have a hunch that we’ll be seeing each other again soon!”

The gray parrot and the fuller goat lingered and reluctantly didn’t want him to go, but in the end, they didn’t stay with Jesse. The blond young man didn’t follow them this time. He sat in the shade of a tree and began to eat those strange fruits leisurely. The brilliant blond hair soon disappeared from their sight.

The next part of their journey lost the awkward tension. Even though no one was talking, there was a comfortable atmosphere in the air. As Nemo’s boots knocked on the gravel a few times, probably for psychological reasons, he felt that even the road was a lot easier to walk on now. Oliver found a more suitable way to practice controlling his strength. A few icicles floated around them, and as the wind blew past, it gave them a hint of coolness.

“If the direction is right, we can see it right away—oh, that’s it!” Ann moved her gaze away from the map in her hand. “That tavern! We can teleport directly from it to the forest near the next town.”

The owner of the tavern had good business acumen. This place was really suitable for transit. There were many wine barrels in front of the tavern, and next to them was a vegetable garden blocked off by a wooden fence. The leaves of the vegetables were glowing with a pleasing green color under the sun. A few chickens jumped around in the vegetable garden, and occasionally a few loud noises would sound from the backyard. It was nothing short of a small farm.

A middle-aged man was pulling weeds in the vegetable garden. He wiped the sweat from his head and smiled at them politely. He skillfully tied the fuller goat to the side of the small straw shed, and even the forage was prepared in advance.

Nemo wiped away his sweat and rushed into the hotel as if he was fleeing.

The inside of the tavern was much cooler than the outside. The decoration and service were fitting. The wooden table was smooth and shiny, without any strange nicks or black greasy oil stains. There were even bookshelves standing on the edge of each table with a few books and materials to pass the time. Compared to Heilam’s and Noer’s taverns, this place had a reassuring taste of home.

Although it was daytime, about one-third of the seats in the tavern were filled. Most of the guests seemed to be travelers with luggage, and—

“You will meet good things soon!” The familiar, frivolous tone sounded. Jesse Dylan was sitting at one of the tables, holding a girl’s hand in his hand. The girl was lowering her head and was blushing like a cooked shrimp. “Trust me, sweetheart, my divinations are always accurate.”

“Ahh,” Ann sighed, expressionlessly. “The ‘goodbye’ was too fast.”

Oliver took a deep breath and chose the position farthest from the table. The waitress came over happily. It was a plump girl with round arms, with a healthy wheat-colored skin and a warm and kind smile.

“What would you like, everyone?” Her voice was crisp and pleasant. “If you want to use the teleportation array, just go directly to the backyard. You don’t have to buy anything. By the way, we also provide horse rentals. It only takes a day to get to the nearest town—”

“I’ll have a glass of wine.” Ann wiped the sweat from her neck. “Best if there’s ice in it.”

“Is pear wine okay? …What about these three gentlemen?”

“A glass of water, thank you.” Adrian nodded. The girl widened her eyes at his monk uniform, showing a thoughtful expression.

“I’d like a pear… Er, a glass of juice, thank you.” Nemo thought for a moment.

“I’ll have the same.” Oliver was stunned for a few seconds and then added with a smile.

“Is there any news recently?” Ann put a few more silver coins on the table.

The waitress smiled brightly and wiped her hand with her apron. “What do you want to know? You know, this is a remote place, so we only have some boring rumors—”

“For example, missing people. Have you heard of Melody Delaney from Vincent Town?”

“Never heard of her.” The waitress shook her head. “Nowadays, disappearances are pretty common. We’re better here since there’s no strange religion. A dozen people disappeared from Roscoe a week ago, all at once. Oh, how scary.”

“What about other news? About anything about Vincent?” Oliver shook his hands.

“Did you guys take on a task in Vincent Town?” The waitress glanced at their black badges but didn’t show any expression of fear. “Actually, I don’t recommend you going there now. The situation over there isn’t very good,” she said vaguely. “It’s been a few months and they’ve been in conflict with those strange bird monsters. Who knows if they will fight one day. This kind of news has been repeated recently. I don’t think it has much to do with your task though.”

“Is there anything strange?” Nemo took out a book he hadn’t seen before from the bookshelf. God knew how long it had been since he sat down and read a book. He even wanted to burst into tears for a few seconds.

“There are strange things.” Most of the guests had already ordered what they wanted, so the waitress dragged a chair over and sat down. Her tone had more complaints. “This place—I mean this tavern—has been attacked by monsters recently at night. Although no one was injured, it’s also annoying to have to repair the door panels and windows. Several chickens were lost, and a lot of the vegetables were trampled on. We tried to catch it, but we couldn’t even get a single hair. If you can get rid of it, the drinks here will be free in the future,” she said half-jokingly.

“Only this?”

“Only this.” The waitress winked at Nemo.

It seemed to have nothing to do with their mission. Nemo turned his attention back to the book, and then quickly vented his anger–”The Melody of Love” was printed crookedly on the cover. There were a few sunflowers that were drawn out of shape. The title looked like a fairy tale. It looked terribly old, and it didn’t seem like it had been kept well. The edges of the pages were full of creases and stains that didn’t look like they came from the tavern. Some of them even looked like… blood?

Anyway, it was an unread book. Nemo scanned the familiar titles of the other books and sighed inwardly.

He opened the pages of the book with a sullen face, quite certain that the stains were blood. The inside of the book looked even worse than the outside. The story was printed on one side, and the blank side was full of scribbled symbols. There were a lot of ink marks that seemed to be traces of handwriting that filled all the blanks. It took some effort to distinguish the printed handwriting.

Nemo, who used to work in a library, was almost suffocated. Oliver, who was sitting next to him, played with the ice crumbs in boredom for a while, and finally couldn’t help being curious, and leaned in to read it together.

“A fairytale.” Nemo scanned two lines and turned forward more than a dozen pages. Every page was tragically ruined by that pile of strange symbols. “The usual routine, alas, look — ‘The curse on the boy was lifted and Melody hugged him tightly. They kissed passionately with everyone’s blessings, and they lived happily ever after’… What a standard ending.”

“Melody.” Oliver raised his eyebrows.

“…Coincidentally, this name should be quite common. That—uh, lovely lady, this book is…?”

“Oh, that one. That book was picked up by my dad in the woods.” The waitress approached with a wooden tray. “We thought it was a pity to throw it away, so we left it here. After all, there’s still a score written in it. It has been there for a few months. Last time a bard passed by, he played very well according to it.”

Nemo frowned and turned the pages of the book again. “Can we buy it?”

“Nemo?!” Ann was the first to react.

“I haven’t read this one, so I’ll take it as a relief on the road.” Nemo flipped through it again, staring at the scribbled but still beautiful handwriting.

“There are several over there! Do you have to choose this one…? It looked like something swallowed it and spat it out.” Ann pointed to the small bookshelf next to him.

“I can recite those books to you,” Nemo replied bitterly. “Which page would you like to hear?”

“How much is it?” Oliver said straightforwardly.

“It’s on us.” The waitress smiled heartily, showing a row of beautiful teeth. “I like good-looking young men.”

“…Do what you want,” Ann said weakly. She held the handle of her cup and gulped down a large sip of pear wine. “Let’s leave after drinking, so as not to have any strange things stick to us.” She glanced in the direction of Jesse.

However, it turned out that Nemo’s choice was indeed not very good—they were lucky enough to meet the suspect who attacked the tavern that night.

At that moment, the bonfire had already been lit, and the four of them were neatly setting up tents on the edge of the forest, planning to rest. The annoying young man did not appear, but a deformed monster rushed out.

It looked like a huge bird from a glance, but on a closer look, it didn’t look like it. It was by no means a normal creature in a natural state. Its height was about two meters tall, and its bones were strangely deformed, as if they were melted and then formed randomly and then forcibly glued together. Blue feathers grew in clumps on its skin, like the sequelae of some skin disease. Its exposed skin was a bit like a human, but its facial features were a bit like a bird. Human flesh covered its alien skull, and there was a sense of nondescript horror.

“Give it back to me,” it said in a stumbling lingua franca, with a heavy accent and an extremely unpleasant voice. “Give me back my music sheet.”

Chapter 48: Enemy Attack

The other party’s breath sprayed in his ears, and that gave Nemo goosebumps all over. He subconsciously wanted to do it but was afraid the dark shadow would really stab the person in front of him, so he had to take a more compromised approach. Nemo gritted his teeth and swung his fist.

Jesse turned his head and lightly dodged his unskilled punch.

“Don’t be so shy.” He showed an expression similar to that of grievance. “I’m trying to help you—”

Nemo didn’t bother responding. He tried to stand up to get away from this inexplicable person.

“You are just bound by your cognition.” Jesse didn’t mind the cold treatment that he’d received. He propped his right arm on the trunk of a tree and stopped Nemo’s movement before continuing happily. This time, he raised his voice slightly. “As long as you always think you’re an ordinary person, your strength will be suppressed. How about relaxing that thought occasionally? For example, try to deny to yourself that you’re an ordinary person.” He licked the corners of his lips. “…Or try to deny that you’re a human being.”

“If I remember correctly, I haven’t used any spells in front of you the few times we met.” Nemo took a deep breath, trying to make him sound as cold as possible. “So where did you come to this conclusion, Mr. Dylan?”

“Secret.” Jesse shrugged. “But that suggestion is from the bottom of my heart. You can’t—”

Before he finished speaking, Jesse moved back unnaturally, causing Nemo to blink. Out of nowhere Adrian had awoken and was currently dragging Jesse away from Nemo by the back collar.

Nemo didn’t miss this opportunity and quickly moved to Oliver’s side. Although Oliver was still in a deep sleep, he felt united as the two of them had a common enemy.

“I see.” Ann put the fruit in her hand aside. She had no intention of eating it. “Maybe this guy is here to poach.”

“Poaching?” Nemo glanced at Oliver and asked curiously.

“Yes. I have been in this business for a long time. Everyone basically knows that I like to act alone. Cross is now a walking sign board for trouble, while Oliver’s power… If he wanted to poach Oliver, it wouldn’t be such a hapless thing.”

Nemo couldn’t help but glance at her with a slightly sad face.

“Demon worshippers and warlocks generally have their own circles, and they usually don’t mix with ordinary people.” Adrian loosened Jesse’s collar as he added in a low voice. He looked a little more energetic after his nap. “Mr. Light is indeed an anomaly.”

“It may be that I’m careless, but you seem to be hinting at something,” Jesse said in an exaggerated tone. “I’m definitely not a demon worshiper. How can I be a demon worshiper without a demon? As for being a demon warlock… Well, this is really hard to prove.” He scratched his chin. “Ah yes, I’m not deformed! I don’t mind taking off my clothes to prove my innocence—oh, we have a lady present. I forgot—well, the one from the Holy Church. Do you want to check on me? I really don’t mind.”

Adrian thought for a while before he said, “Yes, take it off.”

“…You’re really too reckless!” Jesse immediately hugged his arms. “Of course not here. It’s too bold in the wild during the day and I’ll be embarrassed. Maybe you can come to my room when we’re in Vincent Town—” he dragged the end of his sentence, incorporating some ambiguity in his tone.

Adrian turned around and left.

“You did not deny my previous statement,” Ann snorted. “You want to poach our mage? Give up. Our captain won’t let people go.”

“I didn’t want to go either,” Nemo muttered. Oliver, who was asleep, titled his head and rested on his left shoulder. The soft light brown hair was scattered on his shoulders and looked very soft. Nemo couldn’t help but touch it a few times; it felt really good to the touch.

“Maybe it was only in name, taking the boy away so he could poach me!” The gray parrot sighed wistfully. “I have no problem. Take me away. I’ve had enough of it here—”

“Of course!” Jesse opened his arms. “…I’m not admitting who I want to poach, but who would refuse such a smart and cute bird?”

The gray parrot made a strange noise that Nemo suspected it was going to cry. It seemed to have completely forgotten who was yelling at Jesse Dylan last night.

“Bagelmaurus,” he carefully said, “Do you remember what you are?”

Bagelmaurus turned his head and mooned him, obviously not intending to answer his question.

“If I really succeed in taking anyone away from you, it must be by the power of true love,” the blond young man said passionately, still maintaining a posture of slightly open arms. “Before that, I’m just a weak and harmless colleague.”

Nemo didn’t want to continue talking to him, but Jesse Dylan’s words lingered in his mind. He stretched out his right hand and tried to empty his thoughts. A dark-purple ball of light slowly condensed in his palm. He carefully manipulated the spell, which felt like water droplets sliding on a lotus leaf. Just as he thought he had stabilized it, it slipped away from under his nose again.

He really didn’t need to perform any incantations.

Rather, he didn’t even know what kind of spell this was. Bagelmaurus had used it several times, so he made a similar one. God knew if its destructive effect was the same. Nemo sighed, and the ball of light dissipated in an instant. He didn’t intend to do this kind of unethical experiment on such a peaceful occasion.

Unsure if it was due to Nemo’s movement, but Oliver’s breathing became a little faster. Oliver frowned, opened his eyes, and looked around bleary-eyed. Nemo stared at him in silence for a moment and found that the tips of his ears were a little red.

“Ollie, would you like some water?” Nemo was worried. He grabbed Oliver and put his forehead against Oliver’s forehead. “Your body temperature is a bit high. Don’t get heatstroke.”

“He’s not.” Ann sounded as if she was holding back a smile “…Just leave him alone.”

Oliver used magic to conjure up a piece of ice and began to chew on it with a complicated expression.

“Oh—I see.” Jesse, who had finally quieted down, opened his mouth again. “What a pity. I lost two opportunities.”

“You didn’t even have half an opportunity in the first place.”

“Really? But I think… Oh?” He quickly changed his words. “Do you smell it?”

Ann had already stood up vigilantly while Adrian took off the longbow he was carrying on his back. Oliver drew out his sword quickly this time, though he still looked a little confused. Nemo sniffed and smelled a strange sweet fishy scent in the air.

“Scorpion-tailed wolves,” Adrian frowned. “But it’s still daytime.”

“There’s a problem.” Ann cast a glance at Jesse, who raised his hands and smiled innocently at her.

The wolves came extremely quickly. They were specially divided into several teams as they surrounded the five people. Scorpion-tailed wolves were larger than ordinary wolves. They didn’t have hair, but bare red and wrinkled skin, and a scorpion tail grew where their normal tail should be. The tip of the tail was bright blue; anyone could tell that it was poisonous from a single glance.

Ann put away the spear.

“This number should be fine.” She breathed a sigh of relief. “Cross, aren’t you going to teach Oliver how to use a sword? This is a good opportunity.”

Several scorpion-tailed wolves close to them lowered their bodies. They pressed their sharp claws into the soil, their milky white eyes locked on Ann’s movements, and their throats let out a sticky, unpleasant growl. Adrian carefully mounted the longbow on his back. He frowned, as if intending to say something, but Oliver took the lead.

“The scorpion-tailed wolf will only hurt people when it feels threatened.” Oliver sounded a bit hesitant. “They are extremely afraid of the sun and will never move during the day unless they have to. In other words…”

“What did we do that frightened them so much? They thought it was useless to run away, so they planned to fight to the death?” Nemo added in an unpleasant tone. The conjecture made him a little irritable.

“They’re afraid.” Oliver put down his sword. “Mr. Cross, I really want to learn combat skills, but can you wait a bit?”

“Why do you care about the reason?” Jesse shrugged. “You see, whether it’s because of appetite or fear, these ugly things made the first move. What are you waiting for?”

After that, he simply threw out a dagger and slashed the throat of a scorpion-tailed wolf. Fuchsia-colored blood sprayed everywhere. The wolves stirred for a moment, and the low growl became louder.

Jesse magically summoned more daggers and sandwiched them between his fingers. He seemed to be in a happy mood. Just as he was about to throw out a second one, his wrist was grabbed by another thin, pale hand.

“Our leader is Ollie.” Nemo squeezed Jesse’s right wrist hard. “It’s not you.”

“His indecision will kill you.” Jesse arched an eyebrow. “Isn’t it natural to hunt monsters?”

“He said that because he could defend himself.” Nemo increased his strength. “…Fear is not a capital crime.”

“Oh my God, do you adore the scorpion-tailed wolf to such an extent that—”

“I don’t care about these wolves,” Nemo said softly. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your approach, but you’d better get this through your head—you’re not qualified to ask us to obey your ideas.”

As he said it, he turned his gaze to Oliver.

Oliver didn’t pay attention to the movements over there. He took two cautious steps back, lowered his body, and inserted the silver sword into the soil. The wolf was standing opposite of him. It was the largest of the scorpion-tailed wolves. Almost the entire bony tail had uncomfortable blue stripes on it. As it gave a low growl, it wrinkled its nose and revealed almost all of its sharp teeth, and saliva was leaking from between them.

Oliver looked back a few times, as if he had drawn a circle with his gaze. Nemo was familiar with this movement. He was estimating the position of the ice shield when Oliver turned his head and painted a complex array in the air.

“We’re not malicious.” His finger left light green traces in the air, and the flashing frequency of the magic array was like a beating heart. “…Don’t be afraid,” he said softly.

The wolf looked at him suspiciously, still baring its teeth, but the volume of its low growl decreased. Its milky white iris and white eyes couldn’t be separated. Only the dark vertical pupils were embedded in the eyeball. Its tail hung down a little.

Oliver moved his other hand away from the hilt of the sword. A reassuring light flickered in the air when the magic array was completed.

“Don’t be afraid,” he repeated again.

The wolf retracted its teeth and stretched out its tongue to lick its nose. It sniffed the air suspiciously.

“Come,” Oliver said, reaching out his hands.

“…Is he touching it?” Jesse shouted. “Oh God, doesn’t he feel sick?”

“How can I put this. I think it should feel better than touching you.” Nemo said quietly, releasing the hand that was holding onto Jesse’s wrist.

The wolf cried a few times without resisting Oliver’s touch. It squinted its eyes and even shook its ugly tail. The scorpion-tailed wolves gradually dispersed and bypassed all five of them. They drilled into the trees and shadows and soon disappeared.

“Forest ballad,” Ann muttered. “People still use this thing these days?”

“Forest ballad?”

“It’s a way to show your emotions to a living thing that doesn’t understand the language, but it has little value. Generally, the time to complete it is enough for the other party to bite your head off ten times over. Oliver’s speed… Only with that much magic can he afford to be this wasteful.” Ann curled the corners of her lips uncomfortably. “Most people prefer to use this on animals in cages.”

“Isn’t this good?” Oliver clapped his hands and put the sword back into the scabbard. “It’s better to speak clearly. They didn’t want to eat us, and we’re not going to eat them.”

“Huh, I have to admit, it’s really troublesome dealing with the poison of scorpion-tailed wolves. It’s best that no one is injured.” Ann put away her weapon. “It seems that Cross can only teach you how to chop the air.”

Jesse put away his daggers in disappointment, then resumed his signature smile.

No one had noticed the damage to his calf. When the wolves retreated, one of them passing by gave him a hard blow. The skin under his clothes quickly changed from bruising to pitch black, before quickly returning to a healthy white again.

“Indeed, it’s best that no one was injured.” Jesse Dylan smiled and spread out his hands. “You’re absolutely right!”

The author has something to say:

Gray Parrot: He said I’m cute!

Nemo: Are you really a superior demon, my friend?

Gray parrot: But he said I’m cute!

……Bagelmaurus has lost its dignity.

It’s a pity that Jesse didn’t include it in his love at first sight. What a pity.

Kinky Thoughts:

Nemo’s so cute. Protecting his hubby. I love all these small interactions between Nemo and Ollie.

Chapter 47: The Reason for Incompetence

Early the next morning, Ann calmly knocked on the door of her companion’s room with an apple in her hand. When she entered, the apple in her mouth almost fell to the ground.

“You guys… haven’t been well?” She looked with concern at Oliver’s baggy eyes. Adrian looked a little better, but the air around him was almost reduced to zero degrees. Nemo’s face was not haggard at all, but rather he had a murderous aura, which was rarely seen on Mr. Light who was usually indifferent to the world.

Oliver took a deep breath. His expression shook twice, as if he had forcibly suppressed a few swearing words. Nemo uncharacteristically showed a smile that could be called cold.

“Someone snored all night.” Nemo’s smile showed gritted teeth. “All night, I thought a mountain pig was singing somewhere.”

Ann didn’t intend to hide the joy on her face for the rest of her life. She glanced into the room carefully. Jesse was still lying sideways on one of the beds. His long blond hair slightly curled and white pillows scattered everywhere like molten metal. The sun hit his beautiful face just right, bringing out some purity. It was a pity that after being tossed all night, no one was moved by such an image.

“We can suffocate him with a pillow right now,” Ann whispered with hope.

“Don’t talk about me as if my eyes are still closed. I’m already awake—” Jesse yelled. “You’re so humorous, lovely lady.”

“Let’s go,” Nemo whispered. “Since we’re not in a hurry this time, we have time to take a nap, right Ollie?”

“Of course.” Oliver rubbed his temples fiercely. “We have to buy some tents first, and… Uh…”

“If you mean the ones you use on the road, I already bought them early in the morning.” Ann said with a lisp as she kept chewing her apple. “I also bought a fuller goat. With four people we have a lot of things. Nemo can’t keep carrying everything on his back. If we no longer need it, we can always sell it, so we won’t lose too much money and if we’re in a critical situation we can always eat it.” She licked her lips. “It tastes pretty good.”

Nemo imagined a picture of them marching forward with a goat and stopped talking.

“I know it maybe be different form the image that you’re thinking of,” Ann threw the apple’s pit into the trash can that was in the room, “…but a horse is really expensive.”

“We also need weapons,” Oliver said faintly. “Nemo and I…”

“Yes, I found a good shop. You can choose it yourself,” Ann spoke quickly. “I took some cash from my Black Chapter account, so everything is in order. We can set off after we make our purchases.”

She kept glancing at Jesse as she said this; the latter was slowly getting dressed. She didn’t know when the blood stains on his light blue coat was erased by him, but there wasn’t blood or even a wrinkle on his clothes. He arranged his outfit meticulously, then tied up his long hair with a ribbon, dressing as if he was going to attend a royal banquet.

“Where are you going?” he asked with a smile. “Don’t be nervous. I’m just asking. After all, I have my own task—”

“Vincent Town, a very remote place,” Oliver replied impassively. “Let’s say goodbye, Dy—”

“Amazing! This really was meant to be! I also happen to be going to Vincent Town!”

“What exactly do you want?” Adrian asked coldly. “Stop playing tricks.”

Jesse raised an eyebrow before bringing up the contract parchment and threw it directly in front of the four of them.

“The remains of a Grace Bluebird?” Ann took two steps back in disgust. “You’ll pay the price sooner or later.”

“I’ve been told this for many years. It seems that retribution isn’t as fast as me.” Jesse stuck a finger in his ear and dug it out. “You see, I’m not lying to you. The race of the Grace Bluebirds is on the edge of Vincent Towns.”

“Let’s go.” Oliver pulled aside the parchment roll, as if he had made up his mind to ignore the uninvited guest. “We still have weapons to buy.”

“What happened to the remains of the Grace Bluebirds?” Making sure that Jesse wasn’t near, Nemo couldn’t help whispering. He had never read anything about them in a book.

“There are few records now. After all, they’re almost extinct,” Ann sighed. “It’s a kind of bird monster about the size of a human. Their bones make good materials for weapons, and their feathers and flesh are suitable ingredients for spellcasting. If the mission is to be believed, and that annoying person is not lying, there is indeed a group near Vincent Town.”

“…Is it okay to do such a task?”

“There are not many people who would dare attack them now as their magic are pretty extreme. For example, if they find that they are about to be killed, they will desperately give themselves a ‘funeral’. Their whole body would turn into ashes, leaving nothing behind, including bones. My previous team took on a similar mission in another country. Don’t ask. I don’t want to go into details.”

Nemo hurriedly closed his already opened mouth.

“In short, if you want to get their corpse, you must either betray their trust and shoot from behind, or dig in their holy land. Either way, it can still be done,” she didn’t lower her voice when she said this. Nemo believed that Jesse Dylan would be able to hear it, but the beautiful blond young man still had a bright smile on his face as he hummed a minor tune happily while following them.

There were no exciting discoveries in the process of buying their weapons. Adrian picked a bow and gave Oliver the silver sword.

“I’m no longer qualified to call myself a knight,” Adrian said seriously as he mounted the quiver behind his back. “This sword is more suitable for you. It can last longer than these ordinary goods.”

Nemo was gearing up for a while but resulted in getting nothing. The store obviously didn’t consider the needs of a demon warlock. The three men came into the shop empty handed and ended up buying only a very ordinary metal bow and a bunch of arrows. Even with the deterrence of the black badge, the shop owner’s eyes almost rolled to the back of his head and his actions were both sad and angry when he was giving them change.

With their weapons ready, Ann began to pile bags of various sizes onto the fuller goat, which was about half a person tall. It had a long neck and was as big as a little pony. It ruminated slowly, looking at them one by one crossed-eyed. The gray parrot flew happily and stood still between its curly horns and puffed out its chest.

Nemo poked the goat’s moist noise curiously and was immediately spat on. He straightened his waist in silence and wiped his face carefully with his sleeves under the loud ridicule of the gray parrot.

“Done.” On the other side, Oliver and Adrian were holding the luggage, while Ann tied the last belt around it and tightened it. “With a few small teleports, it should take us about a week to walk there. Nemo, don’t poke it. It’s our companion for the time being.”

Jesse looked at them with a smile dozens of steps away. He was casually carrying a cloth bag, but he didn’t bring any large luggage.

“We should be able to pass through the forest at noon.” Ann ignored him and pointed to the hills not far away. “Then we’ll take a break. Oliver, don’t sleep on the goat. You’re too heavy.”

It was boring moving forward in silence. At first their feet stepped on stone bricks but the pebbled pavement was soon replaced by dirt. After a while, the dirt road was gone, leaving only trampled grass and thorny vines. The sun hung high in the center of the sky. It was so hot that everything in their field of vision had a harsh white tint. Insects buzzed amidst the grass and the uneven touch against their soles made everyone feel uncomfortable. Nemo’s feet felt sour as he walked. The hot air burned his will, so he had to distract himself by looking around.

Jesse Dylan walked leisurely in the hot sun, hauntingly behind them.

The female warrior and the knight had expansive combat experience, while Nemo had monster-like physical strength. It stood out that Oliver was the weakest member of the team, and it could be seen that he cared deeply about it. Nemo watched Oliver stagger forward, and decided he needed to be vigilant so that their captain wouldn’t fall flat on his face.

Ann and Adrian were keenly aware of this as well. As soon as they entered the woods, Ann announced to break in advance. Oliver didn’t push himself harder any longer. He sat down on the soft rotten leaves and quickly fell asleep against a tree trunk. Adrian chose another area with shade, sat crossed legged and began to take a nap as well.

“I hope I don’t get the chance to experience Mr. Dylan’s snoring.” Ann huffed and sat down by the shade near a tree. “This is the first time I’ve seen Oliver so listless.”

“Bless you,” Nemo said dully as he pulled on the leaves and grass with his hands. The weather was too hot that his drowsiness had burnt out. “…But I feel terrible. Look, he’s coming again.”

“How does he do it?” Ann murmured. “Did he rise to the level of a sea scorpion by being this shameless?”

“Don’t say that,” Jesse leaned forward and sat down not far from them. “I just want to casually chat. It’s boring to travel alone.”

Ann and Nemo turned their heads slowly showing lifeless eyes.

“How about in order to express my apologies, I can share a little interesting knowledge with Mr. Light.” The blond young man tucked his bangs behind his ears revealing not a single drop of sweat on his face. “After all, I have always acted alone before, and I haven’t paid much attention to this. Miss Savage, you should understand… Oh, I didn’t mean to accuse you of snoring.”

“What knowledge?” Nemo snapped his fingers and made up his mind that if this man opened his mouth again and said something vulgar, he wouldn’t mind using violence to threaten him.

“I accidentally overheard your conversation yesterday,” Jesse accentuated the word “accidentally”. “It seems that you have never successfully cast a spell before being corrupted by the demon?”

“Yes,” Nemo replied dryly.

“I have some experience on this issue.” Jesse beamed. “You see, there must be a lot of people telling you how to meditate or devoutly recite mantras religiously—a bunch of naïve fools! The essence of magic is trading. It’s nothing more than a creature with insufficient power asking for a trade from a more powerful being. Of course, this is just a boring atheist’s theory.” He pulled out a grotesque purple fruit from the cloth bag and threw it to Nemo.

“Would you like her fruit?” He threw another one to Ann who caught it with a sullen face.

“…I already have one.”

“Exactly.”

Jesse leaned generously close to Nemo’s side; so close that his lips almost pressed to Nemo’s ears. He opened his mouth at a volume that only Nemo could hear, and his voice was full of banter.

“If you ask others for what you already have in your hands, who will respond to you? If you ask me, you’re just being misled. That power is originally yours. You should have found out by now, right? Your spells don’t need incantations.”

Nemo’s face froze. The light of the Abyssal magic slowly emerged, and the edges of the dark shadow exuded dark purple halos. They danced hideously as they were about to cover Jesse’s face. “You’re too close.”

“You are indeed a powerful caster before you were corrupted.” Jesse smiled as usual. He was close enough that Nemo could tell that there was no smile in those beautiful blue eyes. “Please don’t doubt this.”
